Is Life too Short to Wait? Hamlet had every reason in the world to kill his uncle turned stepfather,
Claudius. Once he would have been able to explain the truth about his uncle's dirty deeds, nobody
would have been upset with his actions. So the question remains, why did Hamlet take so long to
take action? For the majority of the play, Hamlet thinks up and talks about all the ways he could get
revenge, but it isn't really until act three that Hamlet takes the first step in exposing Claudius'

Hamlet, a play by William Shakespeare, was written in approximately the middle to late 1590's,
while Shakespeare's work was flourishing, and his company was putting up the Globe Theater.
Shakespeare was a profound writer, and Hamlet is considered to be his most prolific writing, and is
a favorite among the readers. It is a tragic tale of conspiracy, death, disease, and a young man's
struggle to avenge his father's murder.
I would like to set apart Hamlet from the array of characters in this play, as to analyze him from a
formalist point of view. To start off, Hamlet was, of course, the main character. As a promising king,

Some of the most common were his uses of dramatic irony, subplots, monologues and dialogues,
soliloquies, asides, and even contractions and invented words. He also added things to help move the
play along, things of interest, such as ghosts, letters, eavesdropping, love, violence, music, fools, and
sound effects. Hamlet, in its entirety is an excellent example of these things. For instance, the one
that you might notice right off the bat, is the use of a ghost, which appears throughout the play to
instruct young Hamlet. Hamlet always interacts with the ghost, and that adds drama, and a bit of
spookiness to the play.
Another critical element about Hamlet is used in Shakespeare verse forms. Language in this play
can tell the reader what kind of person is talking. For instance, Polonius talks in rhyme verse very
often, which was used by fools, lovers, and often times fairies and other mythical creatures (in
Shakespeare's works). Since Polonius rarely makes sense, and talks circles around himself, rhyme
verse is appropriate because Polonius is a fool. Hamlet, usually talks in blank verse, which was
used by royalty and those of high intelligence. This would make sense, since Hamlet is of royal
blood. Shakespeare was very clever in using this technique to give the reader an idea of a character's
personality, background, attitude, etc. (That is, if you can actually understand Shakespeare!).

In the play of Hamlet, Shakespeare sets up three plots of revenge which involve three characters,
each determined to avenge their deceased loved ones. Revenge is essentially a recurring element in
the play and can be noted as an important theme. Revenge is often lead by uncontrolled emotions,
affecting an individual's thoughts and feelings differently and provoking the individual to act
without a reason. The play helps us question the justifiability and benefits of revenge through the
story's individual characters. King Hamlet appears as a ghost and informs Hamlet that he was

notified that Ophelia has drowned, further upsetting him, and worsening the current situation. The
three significant characters: Hamlet, Fortinbras, and Laertes each have their own ways of
seeking vengeance, for their father's deaths and obtaining their desires. Fortinbras uses revenge

justifies that he wants some sort of control. Hamlet and Laertes know that their father's have been
wronged. Hamlet suffers from depression, and the kingdom does not know the true reason behind
his father's death, so he is determined to reveal truth and overturn his uncle. Laertes is enraged

be viewed as a tragic story with multiple deaths mainly provoked by members of their own family

Imagery can be defined as the use of "vivid descriptions that evoke sense–impressions by literal or
figurative reference to distinguishable or actual objects, scenes, actions, or states. Imagery can refer
to the literal landscape or characters described in a narrative or the theoretical concepts an author
employs" (OWL). William Shakespeare was an author who frequently used imagery throughout
writings, and this made him among the top authors in the world. In his work of Hamlet, he wrote
about the poison, disease, and decay. This has a deeper meaning than the obvious that would be
assumed after reading that statement. Imagery in writing enables the reader to think deeper to
understand the real meaning of the text. This paper will evaluate the use of imagery of poison,
disease, and decay in Hamlet as written by William Shakespeare.
To begin with, the use of imagery is clearly seen when Marcellus says, "something is rotten in the
state of Denmark" (Shakespeare 637). He was talking about the tragedy which occurred in
Hamlet, the prince of Denmark. The story of Hamlet is set around the king's place and in Elsinore
which is a city in Denmark. One morning a ghost, which looked like King Hamlet who had
recently just passed away, entered Elsinore Castle. The ghost could only be seen by two guard men
of the city. It was believed that King Hamlet was murdered by his brother Claudius. After Hamlet's
death Claudius immediately succeeded the throne and married the king's widow. The ghost notified
the two guard men that there would be revenge to whoever killed Hamlet and took his wife and that
it was the responsibility of the prince to avenge his father's death.

Even though boxes have multiple uses, according to the article Boxes – Their Importance and Uses
:"Boxes are commonly used as storage." (The Green Book, 2012). Boxes are made to contain
things, so it would be expected that they would be strong and not easily broken. In some instances
the box may become fragile or worn out after being used multiple times. The same applies to the love
shown in hamlet. When people first fall in love the emotion is strong and the relationship can last
for what feels like forever as shown through Gertrude and King Hamlet's love. This is due to how
the "reward system is stimulated through very simple means," so the smallest of touches or "even

One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many types of
readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect, and he is fretful. Hamlet has human properties,
and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human qualities and imperfections
that make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is the plays irony. Irony is an
important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both comical and/or dramatic effect. There
is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so

One occurrence of irony I found particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers
himself into the same position as Claudius. Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not
have the opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the
same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting to see
how these two completely different characters deal with this problem in different ways. Other
interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlet's father was murdered by
Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be poisoned, by drinking from
Hamlet's cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the poisoned tip of Laertes' sword. When they change
swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes
explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic
that, as Claudius is poisoned because of his own plotting, he had already signed his own death
warrant when he killed Hamlet's father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people
in this play who don't die by poisoning: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England,

internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and has trouble finding a way to deal with
them. With so many corrupt people in his life, Hamlet feels as if there is no one that he can trust

Hamlet is affected psychologically because he begins to breakdown and has to acknowledge the fact

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the main protagonist, Hamlet experiences a series of events that
dramatically change his character. When the audience first meets Hamlet, he is dressed in all black

Claudius claims that he is going to send Hamlet to England. Claudius thinks he is in danger with

Hamlet madness is shown throughout the play and it seems to be the central issue. Hamlet says
he's not crazy and it's just pretending to be,but he does it so much and so good that it's hard to really

The ghost made the whole situation for Hamlet seem even that much more unreal. He already
wished that all of the recent events he had to deal with were not real. He then has to deal with the
reality of this ghost. It seems to influence him terribly and takes a negative toll on his emotions. This
occurrence continues to further diversify Hamlet's feelings and emotions (Snider, 67). The last
major external influence is the company of others (Snider, 71). How hamlet responded had a lot to
do with the actions done by others and himself. A person's environment greatly affects how they

From the get go Hamlet never liked him. He felt Claudius was immoral and almost worthless. After
the ghost of his father told Hamlet that Claudius was responsible for his death, he hated his uncle
just that much more. That hatred soon turned into something much more though. It transformed into
a desire for revenge. Before he did anything though, he had to be positive that Claudius was the one

Hamlet is a suspenseful play that introduces the topic of tragedy. Throughout the play, Hamlet
displays anger, uncertainty, and obsession with death. Although Hamlet is unaware of it, these

unawareness are the leading basis for the tragic hero's flaws. These flaws lead Hamlet not to be a bad

Topic: ANALYSIS OF HOW HAMLET ACT III SOLILOQUY TIES ACT I AND II
SOLILOQUIES TOGETHER
Thesis: The prince's famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy is the speech which brings to completion
his two former speeches of Acts One and Two, through his anger, passion, and ultimately, his grief.
POV 1: Initially, the audience is introduced to Hamlet's anger with both his mother and her new
found husband – his uncle.
POV 2: In his Act Twosoliloquy, Hamlet is forced to come to terms with the fact that his uncle
murdered his father, bringing the drama of the play to an entirely new level.

It also demonstrates Hamlet's consideration on the matter of what he should do when he
discovers his uncle's sin. He becomes cunning, saying, "For murder, though it have no tongue, I'll
speak with most miraculous organ." (Shakespeare) At this point in time, he acknowledges that he
must be clever and imaginative in order to overcome his adversary, and that the proof of his
crimes will be difficult to unveil. As said by Silva, "The idea crystallized. He would get the
players to perform something like the murder of his father in front of his uncle. He would watch
his uncle's reactions. He would probe his very thoughts. If his uncle so much as flinched he
would know what to do. The ghost may have been the devil for all he knew, and the devil had the

Polonius, Ophelia, and Hamlet's own parents, begin to question whether Hamlet is sane at all.
However, this will not be fully explored until shortly after Hamlet's soliloquy of Act Three.

Textual Analysis Of Hamlet
Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays to date. It follows the tragic story of the young
prince of Denmark and his quest for revenge. Although it is a great play, it is much too out–dated for
the modern generation to be interested in it and to see the greatness of it. The solution for this would
be to create a film that not only exhibits the central themes but also attracts the contemporary teenage
audience. To effectively gain their attention, the setting, characters and language would need to be
modified.
First of all, the setting of Hamlet takes place in Elizabethan times; however, the current teenage
audience would not find that setting relatable or interesting. The setting needs to fit with the
audience they are targeting and if it is a modern day audience then the setting should reflect that.

Times change and so do the words that people use so it will be hard for a modern day society to
understand the passages full of metaphors and allusions relating to Elizabethan times. Additionally,
watchers may find the film boring or complex if they do not understand what each character is
saying. Conversation is a key aspect in grasping the nature of certain characters and this cannot be
done if the watcher does not comprehend it. Additionally, allusions are abundant in Hamlet, but
these allusions are now centuries too old. Allusions need to be understood by the audience for the
most impact but the ones in Hamlet will not work. For example, "It out herods Herod" (3.2.14)
Herod was known to be a tyrant but that is not common knowledge for someone in this day and
age. Language is a major part in Hamlet to progress the story and characters but if the audience

Gregory Doran's Hamlet
Hamlet Hamlet is a very well–known play across the world. Many students have been required to
read the play in school. Although the poem has been read by many students, student usually don't
further their experience with Hamlet by watching the movie. There are many remakes of the play in
movie form, new movies have been evolved since the play was originally made. There are movies
that follow the play and the time period of the play and then there are newer or more modern
versions of the play. The comparison being made in this paper is, the originally play versus the
2009 movie version of Hamlet. The 2009 Hamlet movie was directed by Gregory Doran. Just by
looking at the front cover one could tell that this is definitely a more modern version of the play.
Much like the originally play the movie is quite lengthy as well.
This movie is a modern version of the play, you can tell this by the setting itself. The play was
originally written around 1599, therefore the year gives you a sense of the time period and how
the setting looked. When reading the plays originally text, you don't get pictures or videos to
watch so you make a vision in your head of what everything looks like. Knowing that the play was

Although the movie did tell the baseline story of the play I don't think the movie captured what
Shakespeare would have liked it to. The story of the play followed the originally play but I think
the overall mental image and picture has more to do with the story than the story itself. The movie
didn't capture any of the original settings, or anything in that nature. It kept the story line, but then
decided to take its own twist and turn on the vision of the play. The movie version did not in vison

Throughout human history, there have been ideas that help to change society. During the time of the
Renaissance, that idea was primarily humanism, which is, by definition, "a variety of ethical theory
and practice that emphasizes reason, scientific inquiry, and human fulfillment in the natural world
and often rejects the importance of belief in God." One of the many people in this time period
inspired by this idea was a writer named William Shakespeare, which can be seen in his play Hamlet.
Through its characters and events, Hamlet incorporates the many aspects of humanism throughout
its story, including the promotion of human interests, rational thought, and human fulfillment in the
natural world. However, not every idea is treated equally, as some are directly implemented, while
others are either implied or seen in contrast to the story.
At the core of the philosophy of humanism, the interests of human beings dominate. Likewise, the
story of Hamlet becomes driven by the decisions of the characters, who predominantly act in their
own interests. Take for example King Claudius, the ruler of Denmark in the play, and the brother of
the former king. Before the actual story begins, Claudius seizes control of the throne by killing the
king and marrying his wife. By acting on immoral impulses to obtain his greatest desire, Claudius
serves as a humanistic example of human interests coming first. However, Claudius would not be the
only character to make decisions based on individual needs, as the characters Hamlet and Laertes
also make decisions based on what suits them at the time, which often relate to each others' actions.
Just as King Claudius acted based on personal desires, the protagonist Hamlet follows this humanistic
philosophy. Furthermore, Hamlet's entire drive throughout the story comes from his hatred of his
uncle upon the discovery that Claudius killed the former king. While he had clear intentions of
taking revenge, Hamlet's actions stem from his abhorrence of his mother marrying his uncle, which
only fuels his rage. Throughout the play, he makes numerous irrational actions in his own interests,

Hamlet Is A Deceiver
Insanity is a perfectly rational adjustment to the sane world. In the play Hamlet several times only
with family and close family members has he showed any signs of madness. However when he is
alone he is thinking of ways to make other believe that he is insane. Hamlet is trying to deceive
everyone by his words and his actions. Essentially the book Hamlet is about a boy who needs to help
his father to take revenge by assassinating the king so that he may be in peace. Although Hamlet
seems insane throughout most of the book, he is just faking it so that he may assassinate the king
and avenge his forebear.
Hamlet is trying to make his family believe that he is truly insane by his words. Hamlet says
himself that he will be faking to be insane so that he can kill Claudius when he says "as I
perchance hereafter shall think meet to put on an antic disposition"(1.5.58), an antic disposition is
to act insane to seem harmless to Claudius. Also Hamlet says"Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst
thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, but yet I could accuse me of such
things that it were better my mother had not borne me"(3.1.118). This shows that Hamlet is
annoyed by his mother as she so soonly remarried after her father death and he insulting his mother.
As the ghost said to Hamlet "leave her to heaven and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge to
prick and sting her"(1.5.89), which was basically asking him to not physically hurt his mother but to
make her feel ashamed for her actions that her consciousness overwhelms her and she comes to
realize how offending of an act she has done. Gertrude is shocked when Hamlet starts to talk to the
wall and she says "O gentle son, upon the heat and flame of thy distemper sprinkle cool patience!
whereon do you look?"(3.4.132–141). As the ghost just talked to Hamlet and since Gertrude did not
see the ghost she thought that Hamlet was talking to the wall. Hence Gertrude is convinced that
Hamlet is insane as he is talking to the wall. It also was a move by Hamlet to talk to the wall to
make Gertrude believe that he was insane, as it was all part of his plan to kill Claudius. Hamlet
