Discipleship In Jesus
Discipleship
Teachers around the time when Jesus lived thought that learning was such that the people who wanted to learn should
come to them to be taught. But Jesus felt differently and rather than waiting for people to come to him, he went out to find
them and then chose them to be his followers. He called them disciples and this word means one who learns. But Jesus
chose his disciples carefully as we are told in Mark 1:16–20 and also in Mark 3:13–19. In the first passage, Jesus appoints
his first four disciples, Simon, Andrew, James and John. Jesus said to them "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers
of men." (Mark 1:17) In Mark 2:13–17, Jesus calls up the fifth disciple, Levi who was a tax collector, and Jesus later

They have to rely on other people and as it is said in Morley's passage on discipleship, "For they set out with nothing but
the word of God in their hearts."
When Jesus tells the disciples about the cost of discipleship (Mark 8:27–33) he means that they should be prepared to put
God and his commandments first before anything else, and they must be prepared to suffer for their beliefs. Jesus told
them that the most important commandment is "Love God and your neighbour as yourself," (Exodus 20: 3–17) and many
disciples throughout the ages have made many sacrifices to try and put this teaching into practise. When Jesus said to take
up the cross, we can assume that because we all have a cross to bear, we should take up our vocation, and that means for
us to follow Jesus regardless of the sacrifices we have to make. When we are told we should follow him, it means that we
should travel down the same road as Jesus and suffer the many trials of being a disciple.
But, in Mark 10:29–31 we are told about the rewards of discipleship and the strange reward they receive for their
suffering. Jesus says this to the disciples after he tells them the story of the Rich Young Man.
In this passage, the rich young man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him that he must give up
his wealth, but the man is unable to do so. The

EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP
EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP PAPER
Matthew 9:35–38 (NIV) reads, Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming
the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on
them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest
is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
Through the lens of this text God reveals to us the heart He has for His people in a lost and suffering world. Jesus points

The idea of spiritual formation has somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of "going to church" versus retaining the
understanding that we in fact are the church and we carry within us the knowledge and the skill to be transformational.
The role of evangelism in Christian education is to aid in church growth and expansion, as well as advancement toward
the salvation of souls. Diane J. Hymans suggests that evangelism and education suggests a variety of meanings and that it
is a matter of language that is clouding what the connotation of the definitions of evangelism, discipleship, and education
are (Hymans). She states that evangelism is "making the gospel known in church and world", while education "invites
people to understand and claim their identity as baptized children of God and to clarify their vocation as people called by
God to live lives characterized by love of God and neighbor" (Hymans). Christian education is an intentional process in
developing relationship with God for the purpose of fulfilling the mandate to "go and make disciples of all nations, to
"preach and teach" the good news of the gospel of Christ, and to build the Kingdom of God. In developing and
incorporating evangelism and discipleship into a current Christian education program I believe that involvement of the
entire membership of the congregation should be employed (all age

Discipleship In The Odyssey
In the way a central theme and message seen throughout this section is discipleship. Mark 10:32 whereby he returns to
Jerusalem to face his death, is one of the central verses to show the commitment and passion Jesus had to fullfill the
mission set out to him by God.
Mark 10:52, which recounts the story of blind Bartimaeus, shows Mark using the word "way" to finish the story of
Bartimaeus, to depict the importance of the passage.
In Mark 8:22–26, Jesus heals a partly blind man. After Jesus places spit on the man's eyes, he says that he sees people that
look like trees are walking. Only after Jesus places his hands on his eyes is the man healed. Mark has placed this story at
the start of the "way" to portray the lack of the disciples ability

Discipleship
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a "Disciple" is one who takes another as his teacher and model. Christian
Disciples have faith and commitment to God, they use their own time to give service others; they sacrifice their home–life
possessions and money. Christian Disciples preach to others about the Good Doings of Jesus and the excellence of God.
Christian Disciples resist other temptations. They produce self–control, orderliness, obedience and a capacity for co–
operation with others. Anybody can be a disciple; for example a Portadown College student is a disciple of the school. To
be a Christian disciple however, takes a different kind of self–discipline. The word ... Show more content on

This means that like salt we should purify, preserve and flavour other people's lives. We should also be like light in that
we are visible–Christianity is something that should be seen– we should be a guide like a light and also a warning. A true
disciple follows the commandments presented by Jesus on Mount Sinai. These 10 commandments are often referred to as
the law and they are a basis as to how we should live our lives.
As a disciple, you should also be forgiving. If someone sins against you, you should not only forgive him seven times as
Peter thought; but seventy times seven as Jesus tells us. This means there is no limit as to how many times we should
forgive someone. Jesus used the parable of the unforgiving servant to demonstrate this. He tells of a king who was owed a
great sum of money by one of his servants. The king let the servant off with this though. A man owed the servant a small
amount of money and he still asked for it. The king found out about this and re–instated his debt. The servant should have
shown the same forgiveness that he was shown.
Jesus used another story to indicate how we should lead our lives. He told of two house builders; one who built his house
on a rock and one on sand. Jesus explained that anyone who hears the words and acts on them was like the wise man that
built his

While the women in the church have an organized discipleship effort happening, there is not a concerted effort to grow
men into faithful followers of Jesus Christ. The men of the church need a program where discipleship happens
intentionally. The scripture that First Baptist Church uses for it's vision is Matthew 5:13. The City on a Hill theme comes
for this verse. The idea is that we should be salt and light to the world so that others will know Him through us. People are
not committed followers of Christ just because they study the Bible. That is only part of the process. The Great
Commission tells us to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them to obey (Matthew 28:16). The Great Commandment
tells us to love God and others. (Matthew 22). The New Commandment in John tells us to love one another (John 13:34–
35). The church needs to be able to forge relationship so that they in turn can reproduce more Christians. The commitment
level in the Sunday School ministries is strong at First Baptist. About 60 percent of the Sunday morning worship is also in
Sunday School. Sunday School tends to be strictly educational in nature. The groups do take care of each other in most
cases. However, mentoring and further discipleship is not happening. The participation in other discipleship programs is
much smaller. As stated earlier, the groups that are meeting outside of Sunday School are

Rediscovering Discipleship Book Review
Rediscovering Discipleship emphases the importance of both evangelism and discipleship. While the two are different
and distinct, both are crucial aspects to building the church. Gallaty gives helpful tips and insight on what discipleship
looks like and how to cultivate discipleship groups in a church setting. The three most important things that I took away
from this book are the following: thinking Hebraically, encouraging new believers to engage in ministry, and how to
cultivate a healthy discipleship group. Thinking Hebraically was a concept that I was not familiar with before reading this
book. In chapter 2 Gallaty contrasts thinking Hebraically with thinking Hellenistically. He points out how impacted most
of us in the West are by Greek

Luke Discipleship
Each of the four gospels portrays Jesus in a unique way. While Mark presents Jesus as the Suffering Servant, Matthew
portrays Him as the new Moses. Luke, on the other hand, emphasizes Jesus' compassion and humanity, which renders
Him as the Universal Savior of mankind. Interestingly, though guided by one God, each author presents different aspects
and definitions of discipleship. Luke's Gospel, especially, provides us a glimpse of discipleship that is not easy; in fact, it
takes trust and persistence. Specifically, in Luke 11:5–13, definition and characteristics of what it takes to be a disciple are
building relationships, persistence in prayer, and trust in God. While other gospels mention Jesus' teachings, they are more
focused on His life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In all gospels, moments of Jesus praying, either when up on a mountain or in privacy, can be most found in Luke's Gospel
(Luke 5:12, 16, and 22:40). Compared to other three gospels, Luke places the strongest emphasis on prayer. He often
records instances of Jesus praying before His teachings. The act of praying is a means for Jesus to express His love and
fellowship towards the Father God. In Luke 11:1–4, when the disciples see Jesus praying, they curiously asked him to
"teach us to pray". Jesus then delivers His teaching that one should first pray for the Kingdom of God to come and then
for the basic necessities of life. This Lord's Prayer serves as a backdrop for the parable presented after, which is Jesus'
teaching on the perseverance in prayer. Jesus teaches, "even though he will not get up and give you anything because he is
his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs" (Luke 11: 8). This resembles
how we feel when we pray sometimes because we feel as if God does not answer our prayers. However, as Jesus says, the
friend will eventually answer his friend's call, but not because he is a friend, but due to his persistence. This parable uses
an image of a friend shamelessly asking a favor from his friend at midnight to illustrate that as long as we never give up
praying, God will choose the best time to answer our wishes. Jesus further teaches, "Ask, and it will be given you; search,
and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who
searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened" (Luke 11: 9–10). These two verses have a pattern
of repetitively asking, searching, and knocking, which metaphorically represents the act of praying. These are all verbs
that describe continuous actions. Again, Jesus wants to

Pros And Cons Of Discipleship
Today's Christianity promotes the belief that one may be a Christian without Christ. The world lacks Christian disciples
not because people do not want to be disicipled, but rather because believers have forgotten how to disciple and therefore
no longer understand in depth what it means to be a follower of Christ or how to teach nonbelievers and those who are
immature in their faith. In today's culture, people claim to be Christians yet refuse to be disciples, so they can claim the
title of "Christian" without having to commit and submit to anything or anyone.
Disciples are followers who strive to emulate their leaders in order to go and make more disciples by using what they
learned from their teachers. Jesus set up the discipleship model that Christians are meant to follow; He made disciples
who could continue to make more disciples. Discipleship is not just telling people about Christ; before discipleship can
begin, a relationship must be established, and an invitation through evangelism must be extended. Believers need to be
able to successfully evaluate where they and others are spiritually so they can encourage each other in love to continue to
pursue spiritual maturity. People must understand that they are making a commitment when they become a Christian and
that there are requirements to their faith and ways they can deepen their relationship with others and God. The Bible
commands Christians to go out and make disciples (NIV Essentials Study Bible, Matt.28:19);

Discipleship Is Not A Static Identity Essay
Discipleship
For Barth, discipleship is the content of sanctification in which human respond to the Son of Man as Lord in Jesus Christ.
It is a calling from Jesus Christ, whom is "the creation of his new form of existence as the faithful covenant–partner of
God." In Christ, Human beings are called to be the bodies of this one and only faithful covenant–partner of God.
Therefore, in Christ, human is endowed a capacity as a freely given gift to accompany Christ. This capacity has nothing to
do with the condition of human being but is solely based upon God's grace.
In fact, discipleship in Barth theology is not a static identity which is something like a nametag, a label, a qualification, or
even a concept. It is a dynamic relationship which Jesus initiates to establish with human beings. Jesus summons actively
disciples by disclosing and revealing himself to them. In this relationship, human beings are bound to Jesus, the one who
calls him, "the living Lord," "not a system of ideas" by this particular way of calling and asked to be the witness of his
self–revelation. The nature of discipleship is a command and invitation to be his witness. Therefore, the only effective and
valid response is the obedience in faith. Through believing what revealed in Christ and trusting what command from Jesus
to be his witness, human beings are activated as the partner in the relationship with Jesus and therefore participate in the
covenant in Christ. From the point of view of Barth's

The principles of discipleship can be found throughout the Bible. One of the ultimate goals of discipleship is to become
more Christ like which makes Jesus's life and grace an excellent basis for discipleship. Jesus invested in twelve men, the
first Disciples, and entrusted them to continue the process. Peter, James, and John were a part of Christ's inner circle and
he fostered and encouraged an exalted spiritual life and growth in these three. Paul was a Pharisee who was murdering
Christians and then his life was transformed and he became an apostle. He gave his life over to God's purpose not only in
a broad perspective, bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles, but also personal. Timothy was a disciple of Paul; Paul was
personally involved in Timothy's life. The Great Commission commands the Disciples, in Matthew 28:19, to "go and

Discipleship : Discipleship And Discipleship
Jesus gave us the Great Commission, and it was not a command He left open for discussion.
Before we can obey the Great Commission and make disciples, we must first be disciples. A better way to think on global
missions is that Missions = Discipleship. Discipleship is about engaging (the Word), following and obeying (Jesus) and
going (making disciples). We believe that missions is more about discipleship than evangelism, although both are
critically important. Discipleship is about obedience and intentionally walking with Jesus through the everyday stuff of
life.
Matthew's gospel is all about discipleship. He is looking for disciples to live as disciples. So often, Christians just claim
the title but fail to live the life that Jesus has called them, or sadly, they have never been taught by the church what it
means to truly follow Him. Jesus' call to His disciples isn't to help people just pray some sinner's prayer so they can be
saved. We don't find that in the Bible anywhere. His call is for each disciple to die to himself daily. "Then Jesus said to his
disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever
wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it'" (Matthew 16:24–25, NIV).
We are to deny ourselves, die to ourselves daily, and make the sacrifice.
We are to pick up our cross.
We are to follow Jesus and obey his commands

D. A: Discipleship Is Not A Continual Experience
The first area D.A. went into detail with was that "Discipleship is not a continual experience." Throughout the beginning
of D.A's Christian life he believed discipleship was continually experiencing God, but he later learned different. He
learned that there are skills and things to develop. Once you develop in studying scripture and spiritual disciplines you
begin growing in Christ and ultimately in discipleship. D.A. Horton's definition of discipleship. "A maturing believer
taking an immature believer and walking along in maturity together. Once the immature believer has reached a certain
point of maturity, they will take on an immature believer and disciple them." The second area D.A. talked about was

The Bible commands Christians to go out and make disciples; however, this is impossible without first becoming a
disciple of Christ. It is important to understand that discipleship should start with the individual and then go out.
Christians need to become examples to live by before they can begin the important task of finding, helping, and making
disciples. The Bible contains guidance, standards, and examples of being a disciple who makes disciples. A Christian
disciple is someone who follows Christ and makes disciples. The goal of discipleship is to become more Christ like, being
drawn closer to Him, and going out and making new disciples. Discipleship is a life long journey that refers not only to
your own personal relationship with Christ, but also the act of going out and making disciples. The principles of
discipleship can be found throughout the Bible. One of the ultimate goals of discipleship is to become more Christ like
which makes Jesus's life and grace excellent basis for discipleship. God's love, truth, and mercy illustrate how believers
are to conduct themselves. Fellowship and guidance attributes of the Holy Spirit, are crucial in discipleship. Paul's life

Gospel Short Essay
Disciples Significance for Mark's Narrative
Mark's disciples' significance is to be an example for the readers of the gospel both in a positive light and as failures is to
understand that Jesus is the Son of God.
They are the insiders who are privy to the mystery of God's Kingdom and audience to Jesus's teachings and instructions.
"And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes
in parables;"" (NRSV 4:11). "With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not
speak to them except in parables, but explained everything in private to his disciples." (NSRV 4:33–34)
They are followers, who respond to Jesus call to follow him. "As Jesus passed along the sea of galilee, he saw Simon and
his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea–for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me ... Show more

Judas Iscariot makes a deal to betray Jesus to chief priest. Mark tells the reader three times that Judas is one of the twelve,
one of the insiders, one of the called followers, and one of the apostles who fails by his betrayal of Jesus. (14:10) "Truly I
tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." (NRSV14:18b) Peter, James and John fail to keep watch
while Jesus is praying at Gethsemane, they fall asleep and at the time of his arrest they flee in fear. The significance of
these failures causes the reader to evaluate their own failures in their devotion "to Jesus Christ, the Son of God." (NRSV
1:1b) The presentation of the disciples written specifically for the early church in a positive light as insiders, followers,
and apostles and as total failures to understanding Jesus' divinity sets an example and reminder for today's reader what
Mark has set out in the introduction and the end of the gospel "Truly this man was God's Son!" (NRSV

Discipleship Strategies Essay
This class has been such a blessing to my life, and it is an honor to create this discipleship strategy for my future ministry.
It is the job of the leader of the church to evaluate the spiritual growth of the church, and one of the ways to do this is by
measuring expansion growth. This is a tricky subject because there are a lot of ways to define growth. There is transfer
growth, which is the swapping of church members from a different congregation. This type of growth is good, but not the
best type of growth. While many churches want to see their numbers increase, creating a church that takes away people
from surrounding churches is not an ideal term for growth, because no new life change is happening. Tender growth is

Lawless, is "an intentional relationship in which we walk alongside other discipleship in order to encourage, equip and
challenge one another in love to grow toward maturity in Christ." This concept is vital to the growth of the church,
because without discipleship, a church can grow to well over a 1,000 members, yet still be full of spiritual infants.
Discipleship allows a church to grow spiritually, as it takes those believers and use their gifts so that Christ might be
glorified. This is modeled well in Ephesians 4:11–13, but only in certain translations of the Bible. In the KJV Bible,
Ephesians 4:11–13 implies by comma usage (that is not in the original manuscripts) that evangelists, pastors, and teachers
are alone to do the work of Christ. In many KJV only churches (the fact that they only use this translation is a problem in
itself), they take this verse to imply that only the trained professionals are allowed to minister to the congregation. The
Catholic Church does the same thing, as the clergy does not need to do ministry unless they feel called to be a trained
minister. The ESV takes this verse and does not put the commas in the text, showing from Scripture that all of Christ's
body can work together to see more people come into a relationship with God. This can be seen abundantly in many TV
churches today, such as the Summit. When people join the Summit, they are told in the membership class that they must
serve the body of Christ in some way, shape, or form. To be a part of the Summit and not serve on a greeting, prayer, or
any service team is in direct violation of their church covenant. They take the ESV translation of the Bible and use it in
the life of the church, so that the body of Christ can serve Christ. This also will naturally get people more involved in the
life of the church, and will allow them to feel more connected. The church best serves the people who serve the church,
because they walk together through

Connect
The book, connect, has largely four sections. The first section explains how important the relationship between others. In
other words, in order to be connected with students, one–on–one communication is necessary in youth ministries. Also,
the first chapter deals about how to balance the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. The second section
deals with how to approach to students who do not know God, are not interested in God, and ever had no spiritual
conversation with others. The section three talks about how to train and develop disciple students. In this section, it deals
with students who have at least heard about Jesus, but not yet fully understood who God really is. These students' spiritual
levels are also diverse, but it is aim for discipleship rather than reaching out them. Lastly, the final section deals with how
to have a real approach to students when it comes to one–on–one relationship. Also, it talks about how to set up some
boundaries but at the same time have a close friendship with them. It includes useful information that minister might want
get.
To begin with, it categorized six types of students. The purpose of doing this is not because the author wants to judge his
students. It is because by doing so, one can clearly have diverse attitudes when students with different spiritual condition
come to ministers. The most basic and important thing that the author emphasized is to make a relationship with students
and have one–on–one connection

Discipleship Within The Gospel Of John
Discipleship within the Gospel of John is multifaceted. Discipleship cannot alone be described as follower of Christ
because such an individual must be chosen by God, believe in Christ, witness publically about Jesus, be open to and/or be
persecuted for the faith, and participate in the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. Since discipleship is not a
vocation that humans can choose for themselves, God must call and pick his chosen peoples. An example of Christ
choosing those whom would be His disciples is seen in John 1:37–39 in which Jesus invites two of John of the Baptist's
disciples who had been following Him to "Come and ...see" (John 1:39). This invitation for the two disciples to join was
extended by God and this discipleship is divinely initiated. This divine invitation to Andrew and the other disciple is also
extended to Simeon Peter (John 1:41–42), Philip (1:43–44), and Nathanael (1:45–51). With each call to "Follow me"
(1:43), Christ gains another disciple, thus discipleship is not possible by human will, but only through divine initiative. An
example of how human will cannot be a cause for discipleship is seen in Nicodemus' human desire to believe and be a
disciple (3:1–13). Because Christ has not called him by name to be a disciple, Nicodemus cannot grasp the idea of being
reborn because he views this a problem to be solved rather than a mystery to encounter (3:4). Faith beyond the
worldliness of his reality was impossible for Nicodemus, without divine

Introduction Making disciples is the all–encompassing purpose of the church. Many churches do a tremendous amount of
work toward the goal of making disciples, but sometimes it is in an unhealthy manner. Just as a healthy person is going to
have the most positive productivity in life, a healthy church will also have the most constructive output of discipleship. In
this paper, I will explain how a healthy church is the goal for discipleship. In addition, I will examine my personal church
context and identify the top three areas that I need to focus on to create a healthier body of Christ. Finally, I will discuss
some initials steps that can be made to improve its spiritual health.
The Goal The apostle Paul refers to the church as the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 says, "For as the body is one,
and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ." The church
is one body and all who are baptized are "one in Christ." Just as a body can and should be healthy, a church body can and
should be healthy as well. Putman et al. says that a healthy church looks and acts like a healthy body. While studying to
be a registered nurse years ago, I had the opportunity to dive deep into study of the systems of the body. The body is
tremendously complex and each system works with one another to make the body function as a whole. If one part of the
body is suffering, many times it negatively impacts other parts of the body.

Reflection Paper On Discipleship
As we look at how we approach discipleship, it is imperative that we look at the role of both imagination and narrative
metaphors. Hopefully we can assume that the Bible is the major governing force for believers in Christ, then narrative
metaphors for discipleship should be those of which the foundations are rooted in Scripture and the story of God's people.
Certain metaphors, specifically narrative metaphors, may speak especially strongly to the way that we imagine our roles
as disciples and the Kingdom that we orient ourselves toward. Some of these metaphors include exile, pilgrim, messenger,
harvester, ambassador, slave, soldier, and builder. While discipleship is very important to how we view ourselves as
Christians, considering what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, Jesus warns us about false prophets and that not everyone who says "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom unless we
work to build the kingdom and glorify God in all that we do. This illustrates a clear picture for me that we must maintain
our faith in Christ and work to build His kingdom to fully receive God's salvation through His son. When putting the
"builder" metaphor into modern American context and our typical social imaginary, I immediately think of Mother Teresa
and her story. Despite some of the criticisms of Mother Teresa for being fraudulent and just a mega–promoter of
Catholicism, kingdom builders are still called to pray for and with people, as well as setting faithful examples for others.
Mother Teresa spent her entire life dedicating her time to other people and selflessly focused on the well–being of others,
including strangers that she had never met before. She built up God's Kingdom by rescuing others and devoted her life to
helping the poor and needy and setting a faithful example by believing in humanity and exemplifying the goodness that
encompasses it. Furthermore, the Lord wants everyone to allow the Holy Spirit to take over every facet of their lives. The
Lord wants this for all of us, and He gives this gift freely. Mother Teresa coincided with the Holy Spirit and allowed His
graves to reside within her in becoming a disciple of Christ.

The Cost Of Discipleship Essay
William Telford in his book, New Testament Theology, The Theology of the Gospel of Mark, uses the phrase "the cost of
discipleship". A phrase previously used by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book, The Cost of Discipleship. 1. This phrase is
evoked from Mark 8: 27–35. Peter had just declared Jesus to be the Messiah and now Jesus began to teach them that the
Son of man must suffer many things. Jesus said in order to be his disciple must be willing to deny themselves and take up
their cross and follow him.(Mark 8: 34) The implications being (verse 35) those willing to lose their life for Jesus and the
gospel will save it, (verse 38) if anyone is ashamed of Jesus and his words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when

What is the gospel of Mark saying to us about discipleship? Mark is emphasizing "the way of the cross" as "the way of
love and service". Jesus is the suffering servant and he calls on his disciples to be the same. It is not a theology of glory
(theologia gloriae) but the theology of the cross (theologia crucis). God's power is perfected in weakness. 5. True

Discipleship In The Gospel Of Mark
On the one hand, discipleship is clearly noticeable in the Gospel of Mark and the contrast between disciples and
secondary characters. It shows his interest in giving continuity to an irony that begins during Jesus' ministry: those closest
disciples who followed him from the beginning they end up not understanding him and abandon him, while other
secondary characters represent the attitudes of the true disciple who follows him to the cross. In the second part, after the
confession of faith in Jesus Mark 8:27–30, those who are with Jesus in the house of Simon, one of his disciples are unable
to understand the meaning of his near death (Mc 14:3– 10) and Judas, one of the Twelve, agrees with the chief priests to
deliver Jesus (Mk 14:11–12). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their attitude towards Jesus contrasts with the abandonment, betrayal and denial that characterize the Twelve at this
decisive moment. For example, the woman who anoints Jesus in Simon's house does so in anticipation of his burial (Mk
14,8), Simon of Cyrene takes on himself the cross of Jesus (Mk 15,21), the centurion is the first to recognize that he is the
Son of God when he has just died on the cross (Mk 15,39), Joseph of Arimathea, who awaits the coming of the reign of
God, dares to ask Pilate for the body of Jesus (Mk 15,42– 47), a small group of women who had followed him and served
him when he was in Galilee and had come down with him to Jerusalem are the only ones who witness his burial and
receive the announcement of his resurrection (Mk 15, 40–41, 16, 1–8). It is interesting to note that some of the attitudes
embodied by these secondary characters coincide with those explicitly appear in the follow–up instructions found after the
three announcements of the passion: take the cross or serve. Most of these secondary characters were introduced by Mark
to highlight how the real disciple must be and that not only discipleship is reserved for the twelve, whoever wants to
follow Jesus and accepts his condition it can

The Grace That Leads to Death Essay
Come and Die: The grace that leads to death
Costly versus cheap grace
The grace that leads to death
Grace that demands a response
Bonhoeffer's theological intersection with Wesleyanism
Grace is a word that can seem dull and lifeless in the church today due to its overuse and familiarity. Dietrich Bonhoeffer
sees grace, costly grace, as the summary of the true Gospel. In Bonhoeffer's day, such costly grace had been exchanged
for a cheap imitation of grace that was little more than empty religion, demanding little effort and no obedience.
Bonhoeffer, who was eventually martyred, knew intimately that , "When Christ calls a man [sic], he bids him come and
die."1 For Bonhoeffer, then, death is the mark of true discipleship and is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bonhoeffer opens his Cost of Discipleship with a chapter on costly grace. He begins this chapter by first describing what
he calls cheap grace, which is, in reality, no grace at all. Cheap grace is described as: the deadly enemy of the church;
blessings without limits; merely a doctrine, system or principle; intellectual assent to an idea; needing no contrition, "still
less any real desire to be delivered from sin;"2 effects no real change; justifies the sin but not the sinner; is a denial of the
living God, and especially disregards the costly sacrifice on the cross. He also describes it as, "The preaching of
forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution
without personal confession... Grace without discipleship... the cross... [and] without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate."3
It emphasizes the love and acceptance of God without realizing the sacrifice that wrought our forgiveness. Cheap grace,
then, is really no grace at all.
Costly grace, on the other hand, is understanding that our salvation came with a price. And if God would send His son to
the cross to die for us, then our only proper response is one of obedience and of a changed life. It is not the law that saves
us but the grace of the Lord. Bonhoeffer describes costly grace as: "the treasure hidden in the field;" the

Personal Statement : Finance And Discipleship
My previous job was Finance and Discipleship Director in a local church with Sunday attendance of approximately 300
including children and growing. I loved my job! As far as job involvement – the degree to which people identify
psychologically with their job and consider their perceived performance level important to self–worth – went, I was fully
involved knowing I was exactly where God wanted me to be (Robbins & Judge, 2009). People were growing in their
relationship with Christ because of the discipleship program I help build and support and the church was on fire for
Christ. I cared about the work I was performing in a biblical understanding such as described in Colossians 3:23–24 and
Ephesians 6:7. I felt psychologically empowered – the degree to which I had influence on my work environment, my
competence and the meaningfulness of my job (Robbins & Judge, 2009). The leadership of the church consulted with me
regarding programs and strategic planning. I received feedback that what I was doing in both Finance and Discipleship
was a blessing to this church as something they had never experienced before. No one was more organizationally
committed than me. I was emotionally committed, believing in the values of this church. My pay was sufficient for my
family to live comfortably and if I had left the church, my family would be in economic ruin if I had no other job to step
into, but I was not looking for another job anyway. I felt obligated to remain with the

Spirituality: Qualifying Discipleship While emphasizing Scripture, Christian tradition, and most important element – the
triune God – are the core foundations of mission and spirituality, I now make a connection to the cultural aspects of
Christian spirituality. There are two kinds of "mission spirituality," which exists in each of missionary disciple.
Encountering mission spirituality is the way to embrace and practice the relationship between microcosm and macrocosm
in community building for working at the margins. Considering the explanations of Gittins, following is my application
and connection to the two kinds of mission spirituality. First, the microcosm is the "inner world" which relates to the
person in a local environment and home culture. This originally and naturally shapes the view of mission without any
effort. The microcosm influences the openness and welcome "otherness" in the world of the ... Show more content on

contemporary boundaries. One of the main themes runs through the study paper of WGME is "crossing over" borders as
"a way of journeying as disciples." In an "age of migration," the Church as a migrant is called to confront the world's
barriers. Crossing–over is the way that the authentic disciples are "building bridges" for reconciliation, justice, and peace.

Discipleship : A Curriculum For Christlikeness
As a "Curriculum for Christlikeness," the training the writer will include in the plan is evangelism. During the training,
the area the writer needs to emphasize is the character. This paper will attempt to address a curriculum package plan put
together by the writer using the church setting where the writer serves.
According to Willard, "The training required to transform our most basic habits of thought, feeling, and action will not be
done for us." (345) This training is for the betterment of the people and representation of God and His love. Training was
given to change a person heart from their way of thinking about the unbeliever and feelings of rejection because
evangelism is not about the person but God. So, the first thing of a curriculum for Christlikeness is to change what people
believe. Willard also states, "In order to become a disciple of Jesus, then, one must believe in him. To be at home in his
kingdom, learning to reign with him there, we must share his beliefs." (319) Otherwise, the individual character and
behavior cannot change. The disciple must live as well as believe the word /gospel taught. Willard points out, "Jesus
understood that it is the care of the soul or, better, the care of the whole person, that must be our objective if we are to
function as God designed us to function." (352) As witnesses in the community, the people must approach others with a
heart of compassion and concern for their souls because Jesus is about the soul and

Discipleship Reflection Paper
Throughout the Core 399 curriculum, five questions are used to analyze the main topic that we discussed. This semester,
the main topic was that of discipleship. The questions are as follows: What is discipleship? What does Scripture say about
discipleship? How should Scriptural principles shape our understanding of discipleship? What does the world say about
discipleship? How should a Christian live in the world today with respect to discipleship? Each of these questions are
important for engaging discipleship, as will be demonstrated through the analysis of each question, the application of two
other mentor groups that focused on one aspect of discipleship, and through the analysis of Gordon Spykman's quote:

Christians should also consult the Bible on the difficult issues of the world, and discipleship is no exception. Matthew 20
does this, where Jesus asks his disciples to make discipleships of all nations. This implies that disciples are not individual,
nor are they excusive. Discipleship is also not regarded as an action, but also a belief, and Scripture specifically specifies
that being a disciple includes following Christ and believing His words. This can be demonstrated with the "Fighting Fair"
group. In their presentation, this group specified that disciples should work together as a community, and if there is a
conflict, disciples should use Scripture to resolve any issues. How should Scriptural principles shape our understanding of
discipleship? If Scripture requires disciples to operate together in fellowship with others as well as to avoid exclusiveness,
those aspects should be included into the definition of discipleship. As such, discipleship includes fellowship as one of the
key components of its definition. Another key component is the belief in a method, which Scripture calls to be the belief
in Jesus Christ. Without this specific belief, the discipleship falls flat and disappoints. In the "Failure" group presentation,
the concept of Scripture influencing discipleship is subtly shown. When discussing disciples, the only reference made
were to Christian disciples. They also made a reference

The Missionary Church And Discipleship
Both articles are about the Innovated Church and Discipleship. The meaning of discipleship is found in Luke 9:23 when
Jesus said "Then he said to them al: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily,
and follow me" (NIV). Jesus called men into discipleship and completed His mission with disciples. Placing Jesus first is
the starting focus of a disciple, for if you do not place Jesus first, you cannot truly be a follower. The term means that one
would put themselves and their needs to the side and attend to whatever needs the savior would ask of them, regardless of
cost. Just this starting concept would turn most lesser folk away but anyone who truly means to be dedicated will, with

Jesus said that if you give up in this life material things and family for my sake you will receive a hundred times as great
or as much now and gaining eternal life. The consequences for signing up to be a disciple is persecution. You contact
states that you are a nonconformist to what the world offers and you are on the way to sanctification. Reimar Schultze
stated that "We cannot become sanctified prior to discipleship, even as we cannot cross an ocean prior to getting into a
boat. The process of sanctification only begins in discipleship.
Win, Grow, and Send There are 3 major concepts regarding being a disciple and making disciples: (1) Win, (2) Grow, and
(3) Send. These are the most important stages of discipleship. The first one is winning of souls into the body of Christ.
Winning represents the fact that there is a loser – Satan. Being in unification with the Holy Spirit, the disciple wins souls
by telling the good news through evangelism. Prayer is the first step in effective evangelism to win the lost souls. John
17:20 says, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word" (KJV).
Through prayer we offer ourselves for the lost, just as the Bible stated in John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this
that a man lay down his life for his friends" (KJV). The next stage is growing or developing disciple maker candidates.

The definition of a disciple is "One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another, as one of the twelve in
the inner circle of Christ 's followers according to the Gospel accounts." Discipleship means nothing without Christ being
the central focus. It is crucial that Christ be the central focal point for all Christian discipleship. There are many ways to

Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new." There are four steps that are involved in the stage of declaration. Curious, convicted, convinced,
and converted are the steps that have to take place according to Dempsey and Earley. When God begins to deal with a
person's heart, Jesus will be a curiosity to them. This is where they might visit a church or Bible study group. Then as they
become more curious, God's convicting power starts to stir their hearts and convict him or her of the sin in their life. It is
at this point that one of two things will happen. The person will either ignore God's call and the conviction of their hearts,
or they will be convinced God is real and alive and that He wants to forgive them. Once the sinner is convinced, it should
not be much longer before they take the final step of conversion. Conversion is where the person surrenders to the
drawing and calling of the Holy Spirit and asks for forgiveness of their sins. Once repentance and conversion take place,
the first stage of discipleship is completed.
The second stage is when development and spiritual growth take place. 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV) "But grow in grace, and in the

The Meaning of Discipleship Essay
The Meaning of Discipleship Discipleship revolves around following Jesus both physically and spiritually. Both the first
disciples and Christians today are followers of Jesus. A disciple of Jesus would be expected to respond immediately to
Jesus, love his neighbour, be willing to forgive sins, show generosity, accept persecution and live their lives using gospel
values in everything they do and say. The first disciples of Jesus were expected to give up everything to be real followers
of Jesus as this was illustrated in Mark's Gospel when Jesus called his first disciples. As Jesus walked along the shore of
Lake Galilee he saw two fishermen, Simon and his brother Andrew, catching fish ... Show more content on

Levi demonstrates true discipleship by also responding to Jesus' request by immediately following him even if he is to
leave everything behind. Jesus was fully aware that his disciples were to find it difficult to give up everything without the
thought of a reward and when Peter emphasised the point by telling Jesus, "Look, we have left everything and followed
you." Jesus replied, "Yes"…"and I tell you that anyone who leaves home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or
children or fields for me and for the gospel, will receive much more in this present age. He will receive a hundred times
more houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields – and persecutions as well; and in the age to come he will
receive eternal life. But many now who are first will be last, and many who now are last will be first." (Mark's Gospel –
10:29–31) This shows that Jesus' disciples will be rewarded eternal life for the good they create in the world. Jesus
displayed more of what is meant to be a true disciple when he chose his twelve disciples. "I have chosen you to be with
me," he told them. "I will also send you out to preach, and you will have authority to drive out demons." (Mark's Gospel –
3:14–15) The first disciples needed to have absolute faith in Jesus

Introduction Jesus Christ taught his disciples in many ways. He taught them by sermons, miracles, and parables. In the
Gospel of Matthew chapter 25 verses 14–30 Jesus tells the parable of the talents to his disciples. This parable is the story
of a man that goes on a trip and before he leaves he delegate talents (money) to three of his slaves. He hands out 8 talents
in total. Five talent went to the first slave, two talent went to the second slave, and one talent went to the last slave. After

"The gifts that we receive from God includes skills, ability, family connection, social position, education, experiences, and
more" (Theology at Work). When the gifts that we have receive is use for God's purpose than they are used correctly such
as the first and second slave had done for their master in the parable. In the parable when the master returns and is pleased
by the first and second slave he uses the phase "well done", "good", and "trustworthy" these words hold a stronger
meaning than just the good servants gives meaning to what is expected. "In these words, we see that the master cares
about the results ("well done"), the methods ("good"), and the motivation ("trustworthy")" (Theology at Work). Gods
present each one person with different gifts with different strength and different amount, however; all gifts are praise the
same. The amount of the talent is an example of this and when the last servant was not up to par his talent was given to
the first slave who had ten talent over the second slave not because he was praise more but because he had to work harder
to double his talent. "God does not endow people with identical or necessarily equal gifts. . . . Some positions require

Pyramid Discipleship Essay
Pyramid Discipleship – Discipleship in a mega church
One of the hardest things to do when you are in a mega church is creating a community of genuine discipleship and not
just a "Sunday Church". It can seem like a giant task to take on when looked at head first because creating personal
relationships with a thousand or more people is a lot of relationships, but there are ways to do it, and following the mold
of pyramid discipleship can be very effective.
So what is it?
Pyramid discipleship is a system set up in a way to where one person will only take on 5 to 10 (at the very most) people at
a time to disciple. And as they continue in their discipling there will be others above them to disciple them as they go.
When you actually look at this inside of the church it becomes clearer and easier to understand. At the top of the pyramid
would be the senior pastor, a maybe some of the elders or other staff members. Moving down the pyramid would be the
staff that would oversee the discipleship program. Weather this be one or two people, this is where the discipleship starts.
These leaders will be discipled by the elders or senior pastor, this is including not only questions about the program but

leaders to hold for their own groups. We want true, genuine, Christ–like hearts of love for this to be done at all. If it does

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Mark 10: 24–
25. Jesus tells the disciples this because they feel that they have given everything up to be with Jesus, but really, what they
have given up is nothing in comparison to the harder things that some people who want to in the kingdom of God have to
give up. On many occasions the disciples misunderstand the path they are supposed to follow and they misunderstand
their role as disciples, and on many occasions, Jesus has had to correct them. In Mark 9:33–37, the disciples are arguing
about who is the greatest disciple and Jesus has to tell them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the
servant of all." Mark 9:35. It was here that Jesus taught his disciples the difference between greatness and humility, and
that they were here on earth to serve others. Another example of the disciples misunderstanding their role is when James
and John ask that Jesus reserve a place for them in heaven, at his left and right hand. Mark 10:40. Jesus then had to begin
to teaching of discipleship to them again after they misunderstood their real role.
Peter was probably the disciple who Jesus felt most strongly for. Peter was the first disciple that Jesus chose and his name
was changed from Simon to Peter, a name meaning ‘rock'. Peter is not really an important character in Mark's gospel
until we reach Mark 8:27–30. In this passage, Jesus takes his

What particular aspects of this chapter have improved your understanding and appreciation of intercultural learning? By
far this book has really grasped my desire to read more. My parents did not raise me to love reading, however this book
has helped me enjoy reading. Chapter six made me realize that my Christian belief should not limit me to explore about
other cultures. As a Christian, I need to step out of my own belief and culture to learn from the stranger/s. I had never
thought about intercultural as the process of Christian discipleship. Christian discipleship is more than an act I do early
Sundays, door knocking–evangelizing. Part of the spiritual growth in a person is found through Christian discipleship.
When I decide to step out of my comfort zone as a Christian, I will obtain "outgrowth of a determination to love one's
neighbor and can itself be an arena of growth in Christian discipleship (as a way of becoming the kind of person who is
more likely to love his or her neighbor)" (Smith, 2009 pg. 105). I appreciate that the author helps the reader, me,

usually a "growing" church – growing stagnant, growing cold, growing spiritually immature Christians, and eventually,

The parent or mature Christian is fully engaged in the mission of Jesus Christ. People who are in this stage are those who
are witnessing and discipling others, in the same manner that he or she was discipled. They are looking out for the
immature Christians, and taking them "under their wing" to encourage, listen to, and strengthen them to maturity in
Christ.
The four spheres of relationships are as follows; the relationship with God, the relationship with family or home,
relationship with church and believers, and the relationship with the world. The most important sphere is the relationship
with God. This sphere or the relationship with God needs to be vibrant, fresh, and personal. All of the other spheres will
work or be in line when our relationship with God is in line.
The sphere dealing with the home can be taxing at times. The relationship here is much easier when everyone in the home
are Christians. However, if dad is a Christian and mom is not, or vice versa, or perhaps a child or children surrender their
lives to the calling of Jesus, and mom and dad have not, family relationships and harmony in the home can become much
more difficult. Paul writes about how the relationships in the home should be. He talks about how each person should deal

Discipleship : Discipleship And Discipleship Essay
Introduction
The concept of discipleship can most likely be traced back to the beginning of time. It is comparable to a form of
apprenticeship. In its simplest form, discipleship can be defined as the act of learning to become like someone by being
under the influence of another. However, when one explores Biblical discipleship the rules change. It is certain that
discipleship was a part of Jewish culture. However, Jesus and his chosen twelve model the most accurate Biblical form of
discipleship. The purpose of this paper is to explore the biblical foundation for discipleship, an overview of my
discipleship journey to date, and my plan to disciple others going forward. The next section provides the biblical
foundations of discipleship, including my own personal definition of biblical discipleship that is supported by the
literature.
The Biblical Foundations of Discipleship
Biblical discipleship occurs when one person who is a follower of Christ mentors another in becoming a disciple of
Christ. "The standard lexicon of New Testament Greek defines the word disciple as a "learner, pupil, and adherent." The
one disciplining should be careful to point the one being discipled to Jesus. It is certain that everyone should have
someone in their life who is discipling them while they too are discipling another. The church creates many of the issues
within the church when new believers are not discipled because the lack of discipleship allows followers of Christ to
remain

Discipleship
At the mention of the word "disciple", the image most people conjure up is that of a faithful pupil, a person
more than willing to follow the teachings of their leader without question. However, the early disciples didn't always
conform to this stereotype. In fact, they sometimes showed a complete lack of faith, finding it extremely hard to accept
Jesus' word in their hearts.
Jesus appointed twelve disciples to symbolize each of the twelve tribes of Israel. In doing so, it were as if he were
replacing the Old Judaism with his new covenant. This symbolized a new, more personal relationship with God through
his Son Jesus Christ.
In choosing his apostles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite all these faults however, and many more, he was still appointed as the first Pope of the Roman Catholic church,
and eventually ended up dying for his beliefs (Acts of the Apostles).
At that time, this was not unusual, as many Christians were being persecuted for their beliefs. A man named Mark soon
realized that in order to keep the Christian faith alive and strong, he would have to write the Gospel down. However,
Mark's Gospel is not a biography. He did not include every minor detail, but only the points about Jesus that he thought
were helpful for his community to cope with persecution. For this reason, I will be using Mark's Gospel as reference
material throughout this essay, and also because there is a sense in which Mark's gospel, with the intention of giving
testimony to the Good News, also provides a really effective teaching manual for his early church readership.
I have already shown that from Mark's Gospel we learn that the call to discipleship is open to all, in Christ's broad
selection of people and personalities –– ranging from fiery, hard working fishermen, to a tax collector and a political
agitator. Mark also shows his readers that a 'crisis of faith' is okay. After all, if Peter provides the model we all need to
remember (as did

Discipleship : A. Discipleship Essay
A. Discipleship Question
This five–step process begins by creating a definition for what it is we are addressing as disciples. It's important to ask the
question "what is..." because it helps us distinguish from other topics that are closely related. For example, if we are
talking about what discipline is, we would want to distinguish if we are speaking about the punishment of a child, the act
of training in a habitual manner, or a branch of knowledge. Our world is a very complicated, intricate, and interwoven
place. Though people often want things to be straightforward, they're not always that simple. It's important to define
exactly what we're talking about in order to understand the topic as clearly as possible.
The second question is extremely important. As disciples, the Bible should be our reference for all issues we face in life.
It's critical that we understand the Bible in view of the overarching narrative of the whole story rather than viewing it as a
collection of snippets of advice. For example, Jeremiah 29:11 is often translated as a verse that relates to an individual's
bright future. People quote Jeremiah 29:11 and use it as an assurance that life will work out in the end for their good. In
reality, Jeremiah 29:11 is a verse directed at the entire nation of Israel essentially saying that deliverance will come, but it
won't come for another 70 years. We need to read the Bible to discover what it's saying to us. We can't use the Bible to
proof text and create the

Discipleship In Jesus

  • 1. Discipleship In Jesus Discipleship Teachers around the time when Jesus lived thought that learning was such that the people who wanted to learn should come to them to be taught. But Jesus felt differently and rather than waiting for people to come to him, he went out to find them and then chose them to be his followers. He called them disciples and this word means one who learns. But Jesus chose his disciples carefully as we are told in Mark 1:16–20 and also in Mark 3:13–19. In the first passage, Jesus appoints his first four disciples, Simon, Andrew, James and John. Jesus said to them "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mark 1:17) In Mark 2:13–17, Jesus calls up the fifth disciple, Levi who was a tax collector, and Jesus later renamed him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have to rely on other people and as it is said in Morley's passage on discipleship, "For they set out with nothing but the word of God in their hearts." When Jesus tells the disciples about the cost of discipleship (Mark 8:27–33) he means that they should be prepared to put God and his commandments first before anything else, and they must be prepared to suffer for their beliefs. Jesus told them that the most important commandment is "Love God and your neighbour as yourself," (Exodus 20: 3–17) and many disciples throughout the ages have made many sacrifices to try and put this teaching into practise. When Jesus said to take up the cross, we can assume that because we all have a cross to bear, we should take up our vocation, and that means for us to follow Jesus regardless of the sacrifices we have to make. When we are told we should follow him, it means that we should travel down the same road as Jesus and suffer the many trials of being a disciple. But, in Mark 10:29–31 we are told about the rewards of discipleship and the strange reward they receive for their suffering. Jesus says this to the disciples after he tells them the story of the Rich Young Man. In this passage, the rich young man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him that he must give up his wealth, but the man is unable to do so. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP PAPER Matthew 9:35–38 (NIV) reads, Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Through the lens of this text God reveals to us the heart He has for His people in a lost and suffering world. Jesus points out to his disciples what we should find significant today, and that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of spiritual formation has somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of "going to church" versus retaining the understanding that we in fact are the church and we carry within us the knowledge and the skill to be transformational. The role of evangelism in Christian education is to aid in church growth and expansion, as well as advancement toward the salvation of souls. Diane J. Hymans suggests that evangelism and education suggests a variety of meanings and that it is a matter of language that is clouding what the connotation of the definitions of evangelism, discipleship, and education are (Hymans). She states that evangelism is "making the gospel known in church and world", while education "invites people to understand and claim their identity as baptized children of God and to clarify their vocation as people called by God to live lives characterized by love of God and neighbor" (Hymans). Christian education is an intentional process in developing relationship with God for the purpose of fulfilling the mandate to "go and make disciples of all nations, to "preach and teach" the good news of the gospel of Christ, and to build the Kingdom of God. In developing and incorporating evangelism and discipleship into a current Christian education program I believe that involvement of the entire membership of the congregation should be employed (all age ... • 3. Discipleship In The Odyssey In the way a central theme and message seen throughout this section is discipleship. Mark 10:32 whereby he returns to Jerusalem to face his death, is one of the central verses to show the commitment and passion Jesus had to fullfill the mission set out to him by God. Mark 10:52, which recounts the story of blind Bartimaeus, shows Mark using the word "way" to finish the story of Bartimaeus, to depict the importance of the passage. In Mark 8:22–26, Jesus heals a partly blind man. After Jesus places spit on the man's eyes, he says that he sees people that look like trees are walking. Only after Jesus places his hands on his eyes is the man healed. Mark has placed this story at the start of the "way" to portray the lack of the disciples ability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Discipleship Essay Discipleship According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a "Disciple" is one who takes another as his teacher and model. Christian Disciples have faith and commitment to God, they use their own time to give service others; they sacrifice their home–life possessions and money. Christian Disciples preach to others about the Good Doings of Jesus and the excellence of God. Christian Disciples resist other temptations. They produce self–control, orderliness, obedience and a capacity for co– operation with others. Anybody can be a disciple; for example a Portadown College student is a disciple of the school. A true disciple follows the commandments presented by Jesus on Mount Sinai. These 10 commandments are often referred to as the law and they are a basis as to how we should live our lives. As a disciple, you should also be forgiving. If someone sins against you, you should not only forgive him seven times as Peter thought; but seventy times seven as Jesus tells us. This means there is no limit as to how many times we should forgive someone. Jesus used the parable of the unforgiving servant to demonstrate this. He tells of a king who was owed a great sum of money by one of his servants. The king let the servant off with this though. A man owed the servant a small amount of money and he still asked for it. The king found out about this and re–instated his debt. The servant should have shown the same forgiveness that he was shown. Jesus used another story to indicate how we should lead our lives. He told of two house builders; one who built his house on a rock and one on sand. Jesus explained that anyone who hears the words and acts on them was like the wise man that built his ... While the women in the church have an organized discipleship effort happening, there is not a concerted effort to grow men into faithful followers of Jesus Christ. The men of the church need a program where discipleship happens intentionally. The scripture that First Baptist Church uses for it's vision is Matthew 5:13. The City on a Hill theme comes for this verse. The idea is that we should be salt and light to the world so that others will know Him through us. People are not committed followers of Christ just because they study the Bible. That is only part of the process. The Great Commission tells us to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them to obey (Matthew 28:16). The Great Commandment tells us to love God and others. (Matthew 22). The New Commandment in John tells us to love one another (John 13:34– 35). The church needs to be able to forge relationship so that they in turn can reproduce more Christians. The commitment level in the Sunday School ministries is strong at First Baptist. About 60 percent of the Sunday morning worship is also in Sunday School. Sunday School tends to be strictly educational in nature. The groups do take care of each other in most cases. However, mentoring and further discipleship is not happening. The participation in other discipleship programs is much smaller. As stated earlier, the groups that are meeting outside of Sunday School are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the two are different and distinct, both are crucial aspects to building the church. Gallaty gives helpful tips and insight on what discipleship looks like and how to cultivate discipleship groups in a church setting. The three most important things that I took away from this book are the following: thinking Hebraically, encouraging new believers to engage in ministry, and how to cultivate a healthy discipleship group. Thinking Hebraically was a concept that I was not familiar with before reading this book. In chapter 2 Gallaty contrasts thinking Hebraically with thinking Hellenistically. • 7. Luke Discipleship Each of the four gospels portrays Jesus in a unique way. While Mark presents Jesus as the Suffering Servant, Matthew portrays Him as the new Moses. Luke, on the other hand, emphasizes Jesus' compassion and humanity, which renders Him as the Universal Savior of mankind. Interestingly, though guided by one God, each author presents different aspects and definitions of discipleship. Luke's Gospel, especially, provides us a glimpse of discipleship that is not easy; in fact, it takes trust and persistence. Specifically, in Luke 11:5–13, definition and characteristics of what it takes to be a disciple are building relationships, persistence in prayer, and trust in God. While other gospels mention Jesus' teachings, they are more focused on His life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In all gospels, moments of Jesus praying, either when up on a mountain or in privacy, can be most found in Luke's Gospel (Luke 5:12, 16, and 22:40). Compared to other three gospels, Luke places the strongest emphasis on prayer. He often records instances of Jesus praying before His teachings. The act of praying is a means for Jesus to express His love and fellowship towards the Father God. In Luke 11:1–4, when the disciples see Jesus praying, they curiously asked him to "teach us to pray". Jesus then delivers His teaching that one should first pray for the Kingdom of God to come and then for the basic necessities of life. This Lord's Prayer serves as a backdrop for the parable presented after, which is Jesus' teaching on the perseverance in prayer. Jesus teaches, "even though he will not get up and give you anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs" (Luke 11: 8). This resembles how we feel when we pray sometimes because we feel as if God does not answer our prayers. However, as Jesus says, the friend will eventually answer his friend's call, but not because he is a friend, but due to his persistence. This parable uses an image of a friend shamelessly asking a favor from his friend at midnight to illustrate that as long as we never give up praying, God will choose the best time to answer our wishes. Jesus further teaches, "Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened" (Luke 11: 9–10). These two verses have a pattern of repetitively asking, searching, and knocking, which metaphorically represents the act of praying. These are all verbs that describe continuous actions. • 8. Pros And Cons Of Discipleship Today's Christianity promotes the belief that one may be a Christian without Christ. The world lacks Christian disciples not because people do not want to be disicipled, but rather because believers have forgotten how to disciple and therefore no longer understand in depth what it means to be a follower of Christ or how to teach nonbelievers and those who are immature in their faith. In today's culture, people claim to be Christians yet refuse to be disciples, so they can claim the title of "Christian" without having to commit and submit to anything or anyone. Disciples are followers who strive to emulate their leaders in order to go and make more disciples by using what they learned from their teachers. Jesus set up the discipleship model that Christians are meant to follow; He made disciples who could continue to make more disciples. Discipleship is not just telling people about Christ; before discipleship can begin, a relationship must be established, and an invitation through evangelism must be extended. Believers need to be able to successfully evaluate where they and others are spiritually so they can encourage each other in love to continue to pursue spiritual maturity. People must understand that they are making a commitment when they become a Christian and that there are requirements to their faith and ways they can deepen their relationship with others and God. • 9. Discipleship Is Not A Static Identity Essay Discipleship For Barth, discipleship is the content of sanctification in which human respond to the Son of Man as Lord in Jesus Christ. It is a calling from Jesus Christ, whom is "the creation of his new form of existence as the faithful covenant–partner of God." In Christ, Human beings are called to be the bodies of this one and only faithful covenant–partner of God. Therefore, in Christ, human is endowed a capacity as a freely given gift to accompany Christ. This capacity has nothing to do with the condition of human being but is solely based upon God's grace. In fact, discipleship in Barth theology is not a static identity which is something like a nametag, a label, a qualification, or even a concept. It is a dynamic relationship which Jesus initiates to establish with human beings. Jesus summons actively disciples by disclosing and revealing himself to them. In this relationship, human beings are bound to Jesus, the one who calls him, "the living Lord," "not a system of ideas" by this particular way of calling and asked to be the witness of his self–revelation. The nature of discipleship is a command and invitation to be his witness. Therefore, the only effective and valid response is the obedience in faith. Through believing what revealed in Christ and trusting what command from Jesus to be his witness, human beings are activated as the partner in the relationship with Jesus and therefore participate in the covenant in Christ. • 11. Discipleship : Discipleship And Discipleship Jesus gave us the Great Commission, and it was not a command He left open for discussion. Before we can obey the Great Commission and make disciples, we must first be disciples. A better way to think on global missions is that Missions = Discipleship. Discipleship is about engaging (the Word), following and obeying (Jesus) and going (making disciples). We believe that missions is more about discipleship than evangelism, although both are critically important. Discipleship is about obedience and intentionally walking with Jesus through the everyday stuff of life. Matthew's gospel is all about discipleship. He is looking for disciples to live as disciples. So often, Christians just claim the title but fail to live the life that Jesus has called them, or sadly, they have never been taught by the church what it means to truly follow Him. Jesus' call to His disciples isn't to help people just pray some sinner's prayer so they can be saved. We don't find that in the Bible anywhere. His call is for each disciple to die to himself daily. "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it'" (Matthew 16:24–25, NIV). Mark's Discipleship Gospel Short Essay Disciples Significance for Mark's Narrative Mark's disciples' significance is to be an example for the readers of the gospel both in a positive light and as failures is to understand that Jesus is the Son of God. • 15. Discipleship Strategies Essay This class has been such a blessing to my life, and it is an honor to create this discipleship strategy for my future ministry. It is the job of the leader of the church to evaluate the spiritual growth of the church, and one of the ways to do this is by measuring expansion growth. This is a tricky subject because there are a lot of ways to define growth. There is transfer growth, which is the swapping of church members from a different congregation. This type of growth is good, but not the best type of growth. While many churches want to see their numbers increase, creating a church that takes away people from surrounding churches is not an ideal term for growth, because no new life change is happening. Lawless, is "an intentional relationship in which we walk alongside other discipleship in order to encourage, equip and challenge one another in love to grow toward maturity in Christ." This concept is vital to the growth of the church, because without discipleship, a church can grow to well over a 1,000 members, yet still be full of spiritual infants. Discipleship allows a church to grow spiritually, as it takes those believers and use their gifts so that Christ might be glorified. This is modeled well in Ephesians 4:11–13, but only in certain translations of the Bible. In the KJV Bible, Ephesians 4:11–13 implies by comma usage (that is not in the original manuscripts) that evangelists, pastors, and teachers are alone to do the work of Christ. In many KJV only churches (the fact that they only use this translation is a problem in itself), they take this verse to imply that only the trained professionals are allowed to minister to the congregation. The Catholic Church does the same thing, as the clergy does not need to do ministry unless they feel called to be a trained minister. The ESV takes this verse and does not put the commas in the text, showing from Scripture that all of Christ's body can work together to see more people come into a relationship with God. This can be seen abundantly in many TV churches today, such as the Summit. When people join the Summit, they are told in the membership class that they must serve the body of Christ in some way, shape, or form. To be a part of the Summit and not serve on a greeting, prayer, or any service team is in direct violation of their church covenant. They take the ESV translation of the Bible and use it in the life of the church, so that the body of Christ can serve Christ. This also will naturally get people more involved in the life of the church, and will allow them to feel more connected. In other words, in order to be connected with students, one–on–one communication is necessary in youth ministries. Also, the first chapter deals about how to balance the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. The second section deals with how to approach to students who do not know God, are not interested in God, and ever had no spiritual conversation with others. The section three talks about how to train and develop disciple students. In this section, it deals with students who have at least heard about Jesus, but not yet fully understood who God really is. These students' spiritual levels are also diverse, but it is aim for discipleship rather than reaching out them. Lastly, the final section deals with how to have a real approach to students when it comes to one–on–one relationship. • 17. Discipleship Within The Gospel Of John Discipleship within the Gospel of John is multifaceted. Discipleship cannot alone be described as follower of Christ because such an individual must be chosen by God, believe in Christ, witness publically about Jesus, be open to and/or be persecuted for the faith, and participate in the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. Since discipleship is not a vocation that humans can choose for themselves, God must call and pick his chosen peoples. An example of Christ choosing those whom would be His disciples is seen in John 1:37–39 in which Jesus invites two of John of the Baptist's disciples who had been following Him to "Come and ...see" (John 1:39). This invitation for the two disciples to join was extended by God and this discipleship is divinely initiated. This divine invitation to Andrew and the other disciple is also extended to Simeon Peter (John 1:41–42), Philip (1:43–44), and Nathanael (1:45–51). With each call to "Follow me" (1:43), Christ gains another disciple, thus discipleship is not possible by human will, but only through divine initiative. An example of how human will cannot be a cause for discipleship is seen in Nicodemus' human desire to believe and be a disciple (3:1–13). Because Christ has not called him by name to be a disciple, Nicodemus cannot grasp the idea of being reborn because he views this a problem to be solved rather than a mystery to encounter (3:4). Faith beyond the worldliness of his reality was impossible for Nicodemus, without divine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Discipleship Research Paper Introduction Making disciples is the all–encompassing purpose of the church. Many churches do a tremendous amount of work toward the goal of making disciples, but sometimes it is in an unhealthy manner. Just as a healthy person is going to have the most positive productivity in life, a healthy church will also have the most constructive output of discipleship. In this paper, I will explain how a healthy church is the goal for discipleship. In addition, I will examine my personal church context and identify the top three areas that I need to focus on to create a healthier body of Christ. Finally, I will discuss some initials steps that can be made to improve its spiritual health. The Goal The apostle Paul refers to the church as the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 says, "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ." The church is one body and all who are baptized are "one in Christ." Just as a body can and should be healthy, a church body can and should be healthy as well. Putman et al. says that a healthy church looks and acts like a healthy body. While studying to be a registered nurse years ago, I had the opportunity to dive deep into study of the systems of the body. The body is tremendously complex and each system works with one another to make the body function as a whole. If one part of the body is suffering, many times it negatively impacts other parts of the body. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hopefully we can assume that the Bible is the major governing force for believers in Christ, then narrative metaphors for discipleship should be those of which the foundations are rooted in Scripture and the story of God's people. Certain metaphors, specifically narrative metaphors, may speak especially strongly to the way that we imagine our roles as disciples and the Kingdom that we orient ourselves toward. Some of these metaphors include exile, pilgrim, messenger, harvester, ambassador, slave, soldier, and builder. This illustrates a clear picture for me that we must maintain our faith in Christ and work to build His kingdom to fully receive God's salvation through His son. When putting the "builder" metaphor into modern American context and our typical social imaginary, I immediately think of Mother Teresa and her story. Despite some of the criticisms of Mother Teresa for being fraudulent and just a mega–promoter of Catholicism, kingdom builders are still called to pray for and with people, as well as setting faithful examples for others. Mother Teresa spent her entire life dedicating her time to other people and selflessly focused on the well–being of others, including strangers that she had never met before. She built up God's Kingdom by rescuing others and devoted her life to helping the poor and needy and setting a faithful example by believing in humanity and exemplifying the goodness that encompasses it. Furthermore, the Lord wants everyone to allow the Holy Spirit to take over every facet of their lives. The Lord wants this for all of us, and He gives this gift freely. It shows his interest in giving continuity to an irony that begins during Jesus' ministry: those closest disciples who followed him from the beginning they end up not understanding him and abandon him, while other secondary characters represent the attitudes of the true disciple who follows him to the cross. In the second part, after the confession of faith in Jesus Mark 8:27–30, those who are with Jesus in the house of Simon, one of his disciples are unable to understand the meaning of his near death (Mc 14:3– 10) and Judas, one of the Twelve, agrees with the chief priests to deliver Jesus (Mk 14:11–12). ... The Grace That Leads to Death Essay Come and Die: The grace that leads to death Costly versus cheap grace The grace that leads to death Grace that demands a response Bonhoeffer's theological intersection with Wesleyanism Grace is a word that can seem dull and lifeless in the church today due to its overuse and familiarity. Dietrich Bonhoeffer sees grace, costly grace, as the summary of the true Gospel. In Bonhoeffer's day, such costly grace had been exchanged for a cheap imitation of grace that was little more than empty religion, demanding little effort and no obedience. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bonhoeffer opens his Cost of Discipleship with a chapter on costly grace. He begins this chapter by first describing what he calls cheap grace, which is, in reality, no grace at all. Cheap grace is described as: the deadly enemy of the church; blessings without limits; merely a doctrine, system or principle; intellectual assent to an idea; needing no contrition, "still less any real desire to be delivered from sin;"2 effects no real change; justifies the sin but not the sinner; is a denial of the living God, and especially disregards the costly sacrifice on the cross. He also describes it as, "The preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession... Grace without discipleship... the cross... [and] without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate."3 It emphasizes the love and acceptance of God without realizing the sacrifice that wrought our forgiveness. Cheap grace, then, is really no grace at all. Costly grace, on the other hand, is understanding that our salvation came with a price. And if God would send His son to the cross to die for us, then our only proper response is one of obedience and of a changed life. It is not the law that saves us but the grace of the Lord. People were growing in their relationship with Christ because of the discipleship program I help build and support and the church was on fire for Christ. The leadership of the church consulted with me regarding programs and strategic planning. I received feedback that what I was doing in both Finance and Discipleship was a blessing to this church as something they had never experienced before. No one was more organizationally committed than me. I was emotionally committed, believing in the values of this church. Discipleship Research Paper Spirituality: Qualifying Discipleship While emphasizing Scripture, Christian tradition, and most important element – the triune God – are the core foundations of mission and spirituality, I now make a connection to the cultural aspects of Christian spirituality. There are two kinds of "mission spirituality," which exists in each of missionary disciple. Encountering mission spirituality is the way to embrace and practice the relationship between microcosm and macrocosm in community building for working at the margins. Considering the explanations of Gittins, following is my application and connection to the two kinds of mission spirituality. First, the microcosm is the "inner world" which relates to the person in a local environment and home culture. This originally and naturally shapes the view of mission without any effort. In an "age of migration," the Church as a migrant is called to confront the world's barriers. Crossing–over is the way that the authentic disciples are "building bridges" for reconciliation, justice, and peace. During the training, the area the writer needs to emphasize is the character. This paper will attempt to address a curriculum package plan put together by the writer using the church setting where the writer serves. According to Willard, "The training required to transform our most basic habits of thought, feeling, and action will not be done for us." (345) This training is for the betterment of the people and representation of God and His love. Training was given to change a person heart from their way of thinking about the unbeliever and feelings of rejection because evangelism is not about the person but God. So, the first thing of a curriculum for Christlikeness is to change what people believe. Willard also states, "In order to become a disciple of Jesus, then, one must believe in him. To be at home in his kingdom, learning to reign with him there, we must share his beliefs." (319) Otherwise, the individual character and behavior cannot change. The disciple must live as well as believe the word /gospel taught. Willard points out, "Jesus understood that it is the care of the soul or, better, the care of the whole person, that must be our objective if we are to function as God designed us to function." • 28. Discipleship Reflection Paper Throughout the Core 399 curriculum, five questions are used to analyze the main topic that we discussed. This semester, the main topic was that of discipleship. The questions are as follows: What is discipleship? What does Scripture say about discipleship? How should Scriptural principles shape our understanding of discipleship? What does the world say about discipleship? How should a Christian live in the world today with respect to discipleship? Each of these questions are important for engaging discipleship, as will be demonstrated through the analysis of each question, the application of two other mentor groups that focused on one aspect of discipleship, and through the analysis of Gordon Spykman's quote: "Nothing matters but the ... Matthew 20 does this, where Jesus asks his disciples to make discipleships of all nations. This implies that disciples are not individual, nor are they excusive. Discipleship is also not regarded as an action, but also a belief, and Scripture specifically specifies that being a disciple includes following Christ and believing His words. This can be demonstrated with the "Fighting Fair" group. In their presentation, this group specified that disciples should work together as a community, and if there is a conflict, disciples should use Scripture to resolve any issues. How should Scriptural principles shape our understanding of discipleship? If Scripture requires disciples to operate together in fellowship with others as well as to avoid exclusiveness, those aspects should be included into the definition of discipleship. As such, discipleship includes fellowship as one of the key components of its definition. Another key component is the belief in a method, which Scripture calls to be the belief in Jesus Christ. Without this specific belief, the discipleship falls flat and disappoints. In the "Failure" group presentation, the concept of Scripture influencing discipleship is subtly shown. Reimar Schultze stated that "We cannot become sanctified prior to discipleship, even as we cannot cross an ocean prior to getting into a boat. The process of sanctification only begins in discipleship. Win, Grow, and Send There are 3 major concepts regarding being a disciple and making disciples: (1) Win, (2) Grow, and (3) Send. These are the most important stages of discipleship. The first one is winning of souls into the body of Christ. Winning represents the fact that there is a loser – Satan. Being in unification with the Holy Spirit, the disciple wins souls by telling the good news through evangelism. Prayer is the first step in effective evangelism to win the lost souls. John 17:20 says, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word" (KJV). Through prayer we offer ourselves for the lost, just as the Bible stated in John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends" (KJV). There are four steps that are involved in the stage of declaration. Curious, convicted, convinced, and converted are the steps that have to take place according to Dempsey and Earley. When God begins to deal with a person's heart, Jesus will be a curiosity to them. This is where they might visit a church or Bible study group. Then as they become more curious, God's convicting power starts to stir their hearts and convict him or her of the sin in their life. It is at this point that one of two things will happen. The person will either ignore God's call and the conviction of their hearts, or they will be convinced God is real and alive and that He wants to forgive them. Once the sinner is convinced, it should not be much longer before they take the final step of conversion. Conversion is where the person surrenders to the drawing and calling of the Holy Spirit and asks for forgiveness of their sins. Once repentance and conversion take place, the first stage of discipleship is completed. The second stage is when development and spiritual growth take place. 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV) "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A disciple of Jesus would be expected to respond immediately to Jesus, love his neighbour, be willing to forgive sins, show generosity, accept persecution and live their lives using gospel values in everything they do and say. Jesus replied, "Yes"…"and I tell you that anyone who leaves home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and for the gospel, will receive much more in this present age. In the parable when the master returns and is pleased by the first and second slave he uses the phase "well done", "good", and "trustworthy" these words hold a stronger meaning than just the good servants gives meaning to what is expected. "In these words, we see that the master cares about the results ("well done"), the methods ("good"), and the motivation ("trustworthy")" (Theology at Work). Gods present each one person with different gifts with different strength and different amount, however; all gifts are praise the same. The amount of the talent is an example of this and when the last servant was not up to par his talent was given to the first slave who had ten talent over the second slave not because he was praise more but because he had to work harder to double his talent. Pyramid Discipleship Essay Pyramid Discipleship – Discipleship in a mega church One of the hardest things to do when you are in a mega church is creating a community of genuine discipleship and not just a "Sunday Church". It can seem like a giant task to take on when looked at head first because creating personal relationships with a thousand or more people is a lot of relationships, but there are ways to do it, and following the mold of pyramid discipleship can be very effective. So what is it? Pyramid discipleship is a system set up in a way to where one person will only take on 5 to 10 (at the very most) people at a time to disciple. And as they continue in their discipling there will be others above them to disciple them as they go. When you actually look at this inside of the church it becomes clearer and easier to understand. At the top of the pyramid would be the senior pastor, a maybe some of the elders or other staff members. Moving down the pyramid would be the staff that would oversee the discipleship program. Jesus said to them "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." On many occasions the disciples misunderstand the path they are supposed to follow and they misunderstand their role as disciples, and on many occasions, Jesus has had to correct them. In Mark 9:33–37, the disciples are arguing about who is the greatest disciple and Jesus has to tell them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:35. It was here that Jesus taught his disciples the difference between greatness and humility, and that they were here on earth to serve others. Another example of the disciples misunderstanding their role is when James and John ask that Jesus reserve a place for them in heaven, at his left and right hand. Mark 10:40. • 37. Discipleship : Discipleship And Discipleship Essay Introduction The concept of discipleship can most likely be traced back to the beginning of time. It is comparable to a form of apprenticeship. In its simplest form, discipleship can be defined as the act of learning to become like someone by being under the influence of another. However, when one explores Biblical discipleship the rules change. It is certain that discipleship was a part of Jewish culture. However, Jesus and his chosen twelve model the most accurate Biblical form of discipleship. The purpose of this paper is to explore the biblical foundation for discipleship, an overview of my discipleship journey to date, and my plan to disciple others going forward. The next section provides the biblical foundations of discipleship, including my own personal definition of biblical discipleship that is supported by the literature. The Biblical Foundations of Discipleship Biblical discipleship occurs when one person who is a follower of Christ mentors another in becoming a disciple of Christ. "The standard lexicon of New Testament Greek defines the word disciple as a "learner, pupil, and adherent." The one disciplining should be careful to point the one being discipled to Jesus. It is certain that everyone should have someone in their life who is discipling them while they too are discipling another. Discipleship Essay Discipleship At the mention of the word "disciple", the image most people conjure up is that of a faithful pupil, a person more than willing to follow the teachings of their leader without question. However, the early disciples didn't always conform to this stereotype. In fact, they sometimes showed a complete lack of faith, finding it extremely hard to accept Jesus' word in their hearts. Jesus appointed twelve disciples to symbolize each of the twelve tribes of Israel. In doing so, it were as if he were replacing the Old Judaism with his new covenant. This symbolized a new, more personal relationship with God through his Son Jesus Christ. In choosing his apostles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At that time, this was not unusual, as many Christians were being persecuted for their beliefs. A man named Mark soon realized that in order to keep the Christian faith alive and strong, he would have to write the Gospel down. However, Mark's Gospel is not a biography. He did not include every minor detail, but only the points about Jesus that he thought were helpful for his community to cope with persecution. For this reason, I will be using Mark's Gospel as reference material throughout this essay, and also because there is a sense in which Mark's gospel, with the intention of giving testimony to the Good News, also provides a really effective teaching manual for his early church readership. I have already shown that from Mark's Gospel we learn that the call to discipleship is open to all, in Christ's broad selection of people and personalities –– ranging from fiery, hard working fishermen, to a tax collector and a political agitator. • 39. Discipleship : A. Discipleship Essay A. Discipleship Question This five–step process begins by creating a definition for what it is we are addressing as disciples. It's important to ask the question "what is..." because it helps us distinguish from other topics that are closely related. For example, if we are talking about what discipline is, we would want to distinguish if we are speaking about the punishment of a child, the act of training in a habitual manner, or a branch of knowledge. Our world is a very complicated, intricate, and interwoven place. Though people often want things to be straightforward, they're not always that simple. It's important to define exactly what we're talking about in order to understand the topic as clearly as possible. The second question is extremely important. As disciples, the Bible should be our reference for all issues we face in life. It's critical that we understand the Bible in view of the overarching narrative of the whole story rather than viewing it as a collection of snippets of advice. For example, Jeremiah 29:11 is often translated as a verse that relates to an individual's bright future. People quote Jeremiah 29:11 and use it as an assurance that life will work out in the end for their good. In reality, Jeremiah 29:11 is a verse directed at the entire nation of Israel essentially saying that deliverance will come, but it won't come for another 70 years. We need to read the Bible to discover what it's saying to us. We can't use the Bible to proof text and create the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
