How Did Pope John Paul II Decide To Become A Priest
The scene I found most significant in the Pope John Paul II movie was when Karol, aka Pope John
Paul II's name before he became a Pope, decided to become a priest. The reason being is because it
was actually a huge change in his life. Deciding to become a priest affected many people in different
ways, but specifically himself is what I'm talking here. There was so many things going on his life/
he had so much potential for many other things. But he ultimately chose to be a priest. Karol's dad
was a very religious person, thus making Karol very religious also. World War 2 was happening at
this time and Karol says that we shouldn't use violence in any way just because the Nazis are using
violence against them. So he prayed a few times. Karol

Cardinal Law
Many people will argue that God was speaking to humanity in a language they would understand for
the period in history when it was written. Let's take a look at what religion has accomplished in the
twenty–first century. Meet Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, former Archpriest of the Basilica di Santa
Maria Maggiore in Rome from 2004 to 2011. Cardinal Law was appointed by Pope John Paul II,
considered in the Catholic Religion to be the Vicar of Christ on earth (earthly representative of
Jesus). Before his appointment by the Pope in 2004, Cardinal Law was the Archbishop of the
Roman Catholic Church in Boston when church documents showed he had, according to the Boston
Globe, "covered up sexual abuse committed by dozens of Catholic priests within ... Show more

He resigned from this position upon reaching the age of 80 in November 2011." Now, let's look at
where your religious contributions are heading when you put your hard–earned money into the
offering basket during Sunday mass. The priest collects the funds, the funds are then sent to their
supervisory figures, the Archpriests, then up to the Cardinals, and finally the Pope. And where has
this money gone? To the families to silence them from letting you know of the rape and torture of
your children at the hands of Catholic priests. To simply say or hear the word rape, assuming a
priori that you understand what those children endured is part of the problem. You first need to put
yourself in the mindset and physical body of a child as an authoritative figure in a white robe forces
their heads in between the legs of the priest and forces them to perform disgusting

The Center Of God 's Creation
Man is God's creation and that is why he/she should be mindful of the dignity of every person, as
well as of his/her situation in the present, modern world. We are the center of God's creation. We
must not forget that through Christ's incarnation, God united with all people. Too often does man
become a tool in the political games, or is played with, as others in power will it, which many times
is "beyond the limits of one's legitimate rights and merits" (RH 18). People shouldn 't become slaves
of the material things, political ideology, economical systems, or their own products. Everyone has
his own life, and the desire to dominate cannot lead man into slavery created by economical system
which places material gain over individual person. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can read in Genesis 1:28 that the Creator gave Man charge over all things that were created by
Him: "Have dominion over the fish of the sea, Page 5 the birds of the air, and all the living things
that crawl on the earth. God also said, "See, I give you every seed–bearing plant on all the earth and
every tree that has seed–bearing fruit on it to be your food." We have been given domination over
the visible world and with our superiority comes moral responsibility. The Holy Father also is
brining everyone's attention to see the loss of our spirituality and ethics over technology or material
things in our lives. With the advance of technology and our own civilization, some basic morals are
forgotten or neglected. The Pope urges to ask the following question during the process of every
advance: Is this "future for technology in accord with man 's moral and spiritual progress?" (RH 18).
In the context of this query, a new question is born: "Is man as a people of the world developing its
humanity thanks to the technological progress?" Unfortunately, many times we can observe that
spirituality and humanity, thanks to the development, degrades in its moral norms. The
technological progress shows that we can do a lot of great things, and we can move with the
progress very fast, but at the same time, we can ask another question: "Should we keep at this great

Pope Francis's Influence On Papacy
As Philadelphia prepares for Pope Francis' visit, he continues to make headlines for his continual
use of the papacy power in an effort incite action in correcting many societal issues. And although
the Pope's activism has been sensationalized in the media as novel, throughout the centuries the
Pope has been a figure whose influence and power extends past the Catholic Church and taps into
the realm of law and politics.
This significant trend began with Pope Innocent III who reigned from 1198 until his death in 1216.
Through his relatively short tenure, he asserted the rights of the Church of England against the
English crown, launched the Crusades in an effort the recover the Holy Land, and most importantly,

The encyclical is aptly titled, "The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable
Development." In the pope's report, he not only affirms that climate change is a direct result of
humankind, but links the degradation of the environment to poverty and societal inequality. As one
of the world's most trusted leaders, the pope's encyclical is expected to significantly further
environmental policy by converting skeptics into believers. Additionally, it is a call for political
action to both parties in America and a prelude to Francis's speech to the UN this coming
September. At its minimum, it has reinitiated the global conversation of climate change, but the
Pope's message has the potential of aiding the passage of environmental legislation across nations as
more individuals adopt climate change as a moral

Pope Benedict XVI:
A Life and Papacy Revealed
On April 19, 2005 Joseph Alois Ratzinger was elected as successor to the beloved Pope John Paul
II. He was formally enthroned during the papal inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005 and chose the
name of Pope Benedict XVI (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). Elected at the age of 78 Pope Benedict XVI
was the oldest to be elected Pope since Clement XII in 1730 (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). Pope Benedict
is only the eight German Pope to be elected into office the last being Adrian VI (1522–1523) (Wiki

up tank traps near the borders of Czechoslovakia. (Time 43). This is where he recalled in a 1993
interview with Time Magazine that he saw Hungarian Jews being shipped to their death. After being
a witness to such horrifc acts he deserted his duties in the military and did some time in an
American P.O.W camp and made his way back home (Time 43). Many supporters of Pope Benedict
feel that his involvement in the Nazi military actually strengthened his religious faith. Lucy
Difilippo a religious teacher at O.L.A parish stated " I feel very comfortable having a newly elected
Pope who had such experiences ... I believe that it gives him a better understanding of similar
current events which in the long run will help him to make the right decisions."
Education & Early Church Teachings
After he returned home from his military duties in 1945, he and his brother Georg entered into the
Catholic seminary of Freising (Locker P. Ben XVI edu). They both decided to study at the
Herzogliches Georgianum of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich (Locker P. Ben XVI

Gorman's Argument On Abortion
Choose life.' There has to be choice." In view of the problems of authenticating and integrating the
biblical language into argument on abortion, what then is the viable course of action to follow? To
tackle this, the study concurs with Michael Gorman's deduction on using Biblical imagery instead of
proof texting to back up argument on abortion. In fact, that is notably why Pope John II, Encyclical
letter the Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae) is more suited for this discussion because not only it is
synthesized with biblical texts but John Paul elucidated his suppositions with Biblical imageries
which provided foundations against abortion based on the Catholic Tradition. Then again, John Paul
II highlighted that the Gospel of life commenced with the Genesis account of creation, 'when man

John Paul II Research Paper
John Paul II On May 18, 1920, in a small Polish town just outside of Wadowice, a child was born to
Karol Wojtyla (1879–1941, and Emilia Kaczorosks (1884–1929). His name was Karol Jozef
Wojtyla. Little did his parents know that one day their child was destined not only to become a
priest and a bishop, but the 264th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, and only the second non–
Italian pope.
Emilia, a schoolteacher, died in childbirth. Wojtyla was nine years old and the youngest of three
children. This was just the beginning of a life of crosses. His oldest sister, Olga, died before he was
born. His brother, Edmund, who he was very close with and who had a huge impact on him, was a
physician and died of scarlet fever. Wojtyla was twelve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wojtyla had a jovial and likable personality; thus, he quickly became popular with many students
who were magnetically drawn to his teaching style. It was his infectious natural charisma that led
some students to form a prayer/philosophical group led by Wojtyla to help the poor and needy. The
group, Rodzinka, started with just 20 people, but quickly grew to over 200 people. By 1953,
Wojtyla's thesis at Jagiellonian University was approved and he was awarded his second Doctorate
in Sacred Theology (STD). On July 4, 1958 Wojtyla was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow. It
was then that he recalled Padre Pio's remark regarding the "highest post in the church" and knew
intuitively that he would someday become pope. On September 28, 1958, Wojtyla was officially
ordained bishop of Ombi. He was just 38 years old and the youngest priest in Poland to be ordained
bishop. In October 1962, Wojtyla was one of many bishops to participate in the Second Vatican
Council. Due to his great speaking skills, he was chosen to make a presentation. Wojtyla addressed
relations and conflicts between the Roman Catholic Church and the modern world. Two points of
focus were: 1) the Decree on Religious Freedom, and 2) the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in
the Modern World. On January 13, 1964, Wojtyla was appointed Archbishop of Krakow by Pope
Paul VI. Roughly, three years later on June 26, 1967, Wojtyla was promoted to the Sacred College

The Fruitless Pursuit of The Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II
I. Introduction:
"Glinting orange through the green creepers, the Kombi family's mud–hut is barely visible now.
Alphonse Kombi was murdered by militiamen in February. His wife, Bimosa, watched them eat his
heart before they raped her, neighbours say. The trauma drove her insane. Two of the Kombis' four
children had already died of malnutrition. Then, a fortnight ago, a distant relative came to collect the
two survivors – an emaciated eight–year–old and four–year–old... 'I have come to try to prevent
these ones from dying," said Mr Kiyana, pointing to the two boney forms slumped on the ward's
concrete floor. With their skin drawn tight over fragile bones, the children's ... Show more content

Not only are these ideas full of ambiguity, they are also idealistic in that both compassion and
solidarity fail to incorporate the human natural instinct to survive. However, even if these concepts
did provide a realistic solution, the Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II are still going in the wrong
direction, because if they were to try and end the million homicides occurring worldwide, their
efforts would need to be collaborative.
II. The Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II:
Tezin Gyatso, the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, was born in Amdo, China on July 6,
1935 into a peasant family. At the age of two, Gyatso was recognized as the reincarnation of the
13th Dalai Lama, and therefore an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
Gyatso's life as the Dalai Lama began when he was enthroned at the age of four in Lhasa. However
his political responsibilities did not arise until 1950 when thousands of soldiers of the People's
Liberation Army invaded Lhasa. In 1959, the Tibetans held the largest demonstration against
China's invasion of their home, therefore declaring Tibet's already established independence. This
was known as the Tibetan National Uprising, which was crushed by the Chinese army. As a result,
Gyatso and over 100,000 Tibetans fled across the Himalayas and into India where His Holiness was
given political asylum.

How Did Pope John Paul Changed The World
St. Pope John Paul the Second There has been many different saints throughout history who have
changed the world by helping the poor and sick. Some of these saints include St. Vincent De Paul,
St. Benedict of Nursia, and St. Giles; however most of these saints did their good deeds one hundred
or more years ago. In the past century some people were inspired by these people of the past and
decided to continue the work that theses saints started. One of the most important people who heard
the call and gave up their life in order to follow it is St. Pope John Paul the Second. St. Pope John
Paul the Second was born on "May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland" (Blakemore). His birth name
was "Karol Józef Wojtyła" (Blakemore), but he later changed it after he became the Pope. When he
was a young adult World War two started and Poland was invaded by the Nazis. He had to flee
Poland with a bunch of other people and only returned after Russia took the land over from
Germany. Soon after all of this happened the war ended and that is when he decided to become a
priest. St. John Paul became a priest in 1946 after the war ended and went to Rome to study
philosophy. This lasted ten years and when he finished with his studies he was first considered as a
bishop. During ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pope John Paul changed both the Catholic Church and the lives of many people who could not
defend themselves. He changed some of the things that the Catholic Church thought was wrong and
he also changed the view of the Catholic Church for the average person who was not part of the
religion. Without him the Catholic Church would have probably been viewed very negatively during
the 20th century because of all the scandals that happened during that time. Also he helped raise
awareness for situations that otherwise probably would never have ever been heard of without him.

Pope John Paul Report
Biography of Pope John Paul the Second
The most recognised man in the world, His Holiness Pope John Paul II was born in Wadowice,
Poland on the 18th May, 1920. When he was born he was given the name Karol Jozef Wojtyla,
Karol after his father and Jozef after the father of Jesus Christ. He was referred to affectionately as
Lolek.
By the age of 21 the Pope had experienced great loss with the deaths of all the immediate members
of his family.
His mother died when he was only 8 years old, his elder brother, a doctor, when he was 12 and his
father when he was just 21. His father had dreamed of seeing his son enter the priesthood, but
unfortunately he did not live to see him become a priest.

During this time he participated in the second Vatican Council making contributions to the
documents that were the result of this Council.
On October 16th 1978 at the relatively young age of 58, Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope. He took
the name John Paul, after his predecessor who had died suddenly after only 33 days in office. He
was an unexpected choice. He was the first non–Italian Pope in over 450 years, and he came from a
Communist country.
He said 'I was afraid to receive this nomination. But I did it in the spirit of obedience to Our Lord
and in the total confidence in His mother, the most holy Madonna'. The Pope saw himself as the
'Servant of the Servants of God' and did away with much of the pomp and ceremony the office had
previously held.
In his 26 years as Pope he travelled widely visiting the Catholic Church's faithful followers all over
the world – he visited many countries that had never had a Pope visit. His visits always attracted
large crowds. In 1995 while in the Philippines he said mass for a crowd of over 4 million.
One of his earliest visits was to his homeland – Poland. His visit caused embarrassment for the
Communist authorities as Poland was officially atheist at that time, yet millions turned up to see the
Pope. He reminded his fellow Poles of their human rights and inspired the Polish Solidarity Union
to stand up to the Communist authorities. The Pope was instrumental in bringing about the collapse

desperation and an overwhelming sense of hope. Gerda Weissmann was born in Bielsko, Poland.
Both of her parents and her older brother died during the Holocaust. She was somehow able to
survive "the ghetto, deportation, slave labor camps and a three month death march. She was rescued
by an American soldier named Kurt Klein. She ended up marrying him and moving to the United
States. Her story is an example of a person who struggled with adversity but searched for a reason to
hope. She has used her remarkable survival as an inspiration for those who have no reason to
believe they can overcome struggles. She has a foundation named Citizenship Counts which teaches
students about their rights and the importance of their citizenship. She has written many books about
her experiences and her belief that hope will help a person overcome darkness. She travels the world
today telling people her story to increase their knowledge of the Holocaust. Her story of survival

The Catholic Church Essay
The Catholic Church
The Catholic Church in the 20th Century underwent tremendous change, most significantly as a
result of the Second Vatican Council. This Council created an atmosphere of reform within the
leading theologians and the hierarchy of the Church. Consequently, when Pope Paul VI released his
encyclical Humanae Vitae, to many of the reformers it seemed to contradict the sentiment of the
Council.
At the same time, though, there was a movement afoot to radically change the power structure of the
Church. Led by the same liberal theologians who took offense to the pro–life policies laid out in
Humanae Vitae, the aim was to transition the Church from an authoritarian power structure to a
more democratic model. Humanae ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(McInerny 17–18)
This image is very symbolic of the attempt to overthrow the teaching authority of the Pope taking
place in the Catholic Church following the historic release of Humanae Vitae, an important papal
encyclical following the religious revolution known as Vatican II. Unremarkable for its content,
which simply reaffirmed the current Church views on contraceptive use, the response to Humanae
Vitae has been shocking. The controversy over Humanae Vitae revealed a schism between liberal
and conservative elements in the Church. This rift included the Church's view of birth control, but
on a deeper level was about the right of the Pope to dictate the official Church teaching without
following the dictates of the laity, bishops, cardinals, or theologians. Leading the liberal,
revolutionary forces were the Church's leading theologians, and guiding the conservative, counter–
revolutionary side was the Pope, primarily under Pope Paul VI.
To understand the response of theologians, it is important to look at the conditions surrounding the
encyclical's release. In 1959 Pope John XXIII announced that the

John the Baptist, like many other Jewish people, and was one of those who followed John. Then one
day Jesus came and John pointed to him saying, "Behold the Lamb of God". Andrew and another

How Did Pope Francis Influence Its Followers
In conclusion, the results proved the first part of my hypothesis and disproved the second part. Pope
Francis's approval ratings have little to do with how much a nation's Catholics agree with the Pope
on "domestic issues". I suggest this may be a result of the less religious aspects of the modern Pope.
The Pope is a world leader and has a large foreign policy presence that transcends basic church
theology and scripture. Pope Francis, like Pope John Paul II, is a man who can influence the world
in ways that most secular leaders cannot. Pope Francis's calls to end wars, promote the environment,
and defend human rights have won him the praise of the world. Fortunately for church, sometimes
negative perceptions of the church have not bogged down the approval of Pope Francis.
Unfortunately for the church, the popularity for the Pope has not caused Catholics worldwide to
adopt all the Church's positions. One could argue that Pope Francis's popularity is a result of his
perceived progressivism compared to other Catholic leaders. However, Pope Francis unquestionably
still stands politically to the right of average Catholic worldwide on social issues, despite his
perceived liberal streak. Nonetheless, as the data showed, Pope Francis approval rating did not
correlate with how socially conservative or liberal a country is. ... Show more content on

Even though my hypothesis was disproven I can draw a different conclusion from this data; there is
a correlation between a country's socially conservative views and total population growth. For
example, there is strong correlation between a country's Catholic population's opposition to
contraception and total population growth between 2000 and 2015 (R= .7716). This makes plenty of

The Prophetic Intuition Of Pope John Paul II And The...
Fr R. Cantalamessa pointed out, "The prophetic intuition of Pope Paul VI had a determining role in
this (recognition of the CCR by the Church). In that, on Pentecost of 1975 at a meeting with its
leaders, he defined the Charismatic Renewal as a 'chance' for the Church." Cardinal L.J. Suenens, a
protagonist of CCR, recognized it as "a current of grace" and convinced Pope Paul VI of the need
for the Church to accept and encourage the Renewal in order that it should not grow in isolation. In
the summer of 1975, some 10,000 Catholic charismatics gathered in the Catacombs of St. Callistus
in Rome for the Second International Congress. A special Mass was celebrated with singing in
tongues and prophecies at the Papal Altar in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome followed by the historic
special audience with Pope Paul VI.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) is much indebted to Saint Pope John Paul II for its
growth and acceptance in the Church through the unfailing support it received throughout his
Pontificate. At a special audience on 7 May 1981 to the participants of the Fourth International
Leaders' Conference in Rome, Saint John Paul II said that he made his own the words of St Paul, "I
give thanks to God every time I think of you" (Phil 1:3).
Prior to his election, the future Pope Benedict XVI gave a very supportive description of the
Renewal in The Ratzinger Report: "In the heart of a world desiccated by rationalistic skepticism a

partisan part in world affairs than any other Pope in modern history before his passing. He was
fluent in eight languages, and was a frequent traveler of the world and was the first Pope in over
sixty years to visit an Islamic country ("Pope John Paull II"). Pope John Paul II has prolonged his

JOHN PAUL II
JOHN PAUL II was the first non–Italian pope since 1523, whose energetic, active approach to his
office, unprecedented world travel, and firm religious conservatism have enhanced the importance
of the papacy in both the Roman Catholic church and the non–Catholic world. The pope is also the
head of the independent state of Vatican City.
Born Karol Wojty³a on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, he studied poetry and drama at the
University of Kraków. During World War II he worked in a stone quarry and in a chemical factory
while preparing for the priesthood. Ordained in 1946, he earned a doctorate in theology at Rome's
Angelicum Institute in 1948. Until he became auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, he was a

Despite recurrent health problems in the 1990s, John Paul maintained an active schedule. In
September 1993 he traveled to the Baltic republics, the first papal visit to countries of the former
Soviet Union. His journey to Lebanon in May 1997, to give his support to the Christian minority
and to heal religious divisions there, was followed by a visit to Brazil in October. On a five–day
visit to Cuba in January 1998, he denounced U.S. trade sanctions against that country and pressed
Fidel Castro's government to release political prisoners and ease restrictions on religious and
political rights. He also pressed Nigeria on human rights issues during a three–day visit two months
later; while there, John Paul beatified a Nigerian priest. Emphasizing a central theme of John Paul's
papacy, that of Jewish–Christian reconciliation, the Vatican issued a statement in mid–March
apologizing to Jews for the Church's failure to take decisive action against Nazi Germany; the
document received a mixed reception from Jewish groups, in part because it defended the actions of
Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust. Concerned with the mission of Roman Catholicism in the
Americas and the problem of increased Protestant proselytism in Latin America, the pope visited
Saint Louis, Mo., and Mexico City in January 1999. In June of that year, in the spirit of

Comparison and Contrast between Popes
When people think of the Pope, they think of a leader, admirable person, and someone who is
willing to listen to opinions of the people to make them pleased. They have power, and are lead the
Roman Catholic Church when in reign. These are all huge responsibilities and the Pope is judged in
every aspect of these qualities. They carry much accountability and pressure from the people in the
community. Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis are very similar in their styles and ways of working
with the people. They also have differences amongst their philosophies. However; their similarities

The insight on women and their specific role amongst the church is what collides. When watching
the PBS film, it states that even though women are very frequent in the church, their role is very
small and not as important as the men. They don't have a specific role nor importance to the church.
John Paul feels this is the correct way to run the system of the church. He believes this due to the
fact that men can become priests and have the highest role in the church. On the other hand, Pope
Francis had a big issue with this topic that he made comments about possibly changing the system
in the future. According to the article by Spadero, he explains Pope Francis' view of women in the
life of the Church by stating, "The church cannot be herself without the woman and her role. The
woman is essential for the church. Mary, a woman, is more important than the bishops. I say this
because we must not confuse the function with the dignity. We must therefore investigate further the
role of women in the church. We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of the
woman." Pope Francis believes women can make a dramatic difference in the church can help with
the real word decisions the church is facing

Reflection On Chaplaincy
Thank you for inviting me to this forum, I am grateful to all who organized the event especially Fr.
Peter Stravinskas who certainly knows how to bring people together from different disciplines and
dioceses' for the purpose of Catholic Education.
I was reflecting on what my contribution might be because while I was delighted to accept the
invitation–the subject of Chaplaincy in the High School was not of my choosing.
So, I sat down about a month ago and began reflecting on the Church's definition of a chaplain in
Code of Canon Law, Can 564 states: "a chaplain is a priest to whom is entrusted in a stable manner
the pastoral care, at least in part, of some community or special group of Christ's faithful, to be

In your priesthood, you image the Pope's call to the Church, – how you participate in the Pope's call
is going to effect how the baptized will respond to the call. They have a right to hear the truth in a
timely manner:
Pope St. John Paul II 10/16/1978– 6/2/2005, Pope Emeritus Benedict 6/19/2005 – 2/28/13 and now
Pope Francis 3/13/13 – present.
Now, certainly, Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8), but as POPE JOHN
PAUL II reminded priests "to proclaim the "Good News" to all and to practice in a constantly
renewed way Christ 's perennial command: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you...even to the end of the world" (Mt 28:19–
20). So, here is what I might offer to challenges of our day: I mentioned it earlier, to hand on in a
timely way what Christ IS entrusting to his Apostles, they in turn hand on by their preaching and
writing, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to all generations, until Christ returns in glory. Here
is a very brief review of the important syllogism: Peter is to Francis as the Apostles are the Bishops:
In 1978 to 1984, John Paul II gave us his catechesis on "Human Love in the Divine Plan," also
known as the "Theology of the Body." The USCCB website treats the subject in full outline with

In Defense of Love: Why Catholics Should be for Gay...
The topic of homosexual marriages has been a very hotly contested issue and has in recent years
become an even more heavily debated topic, particularly in the Catholic Church. Now, Catholics
have always had a very definite stance on homosexuality and more importantly homosexual
marriage. They have always had the belief that marriage is, and should remain, exclusively between
a man and a woman. I too, being a Catholic myself, held this belief for quite some time until I
actually looked into scripture, and I discovered that the Catholic Church has been thinking
backwards. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, homosexual marriage has always been
deemed an abomination by scripture, tradition, and holy fathers, but through scripture ... Show more

That is not to say that everyone is going straight to hell if they are homosexual. "Every human being
is called to receive the gift of divine son–ship, to become a child of God by grace. However to
receive this gift we must reject, sin including homosexual behavior" (Brom). Rome instructs that we
do not judge the sinner; we only judge the sin. While we are taught to not pass judgment on gays for
being homosexual, we are to oppose any and all homosexual acts. Pope John Paul II spoke
extensively on gay marriage and teaches that, "The presence of the feminine element, alongside the
male element and together with it, signifies an enrichment for men in the whole perspective of his
history" (Pope John Paul II). Pope John Paul II raises an excellent point; there are fantastic benefits
to marriage enjoyed by both spouses. There are many health benefits to marriage: including longer
lifespan, improved overall happiness, someone to monitor your health, someone to live for, and
shorter stays in hospital. However, the question remains that if marriage is such a wonderful,
beneficial thing, why are gays prevented from participating?
Well the Vatican has many answers that can all be conveniently found in one volume, the Bible. One
need only look into the second chapter of the good book to find the first scripture used against gay
marriage. Genesis 2:24 reads, "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his
wife, and they become one flesh."

Pope Francis And Its Influence On The Catholic Church
as soon the Catholic Church receives a newly elected pope, it is assumed that they will take the seat
of Peter and lead the Church through the issues the world is currently facing while enacting a global
mission to combat future world problems. As each new pope comes in, they enter into the beginning
of their reign with a different worldview and insight that influences the Catholic Church as a whole
and determines the achievements that are to come out of their papacy. Since 1958, the Church has
relied on six popes to help guide the world through the rocky transition into modern life. These
popes are Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and
Pope Francis. Each of these popes is responsible for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the world was in the midst of political turmoil, the Catholic Church elected Pope John Paul I
whose reign lasted only thirty–three days after he suffered from a heart attack and died. He was then
replaced with Pope John Paul who became the first non–Italian since 1522. Pope John Paul II
focused on the youth of the Catholic Church, knowing that they were the faith's future and thus
made that the main focus of his papal reign. Similar to Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II loved to
interact with the members of the Church and both can often be seen photographed hugging or
kissing children and those who are deemed as "outcasts" in society. Both popes are known to have
said and, in Pope Francis' case. currently say mass close to the people. Pope Paul VI performed his
masses outdoors while Pope Francis performs them in the Vatican Guest House Chapel where he
chooses to live in order to be more connected to the people and to live simply. Both popes have
made it a part of their mission to incorporate the Churches traditions into new modern customs in
order to speak directly to the world, especially its youth. Although both popes were known for their
common love to connect with the people, they had varying opinions on certain teachings of the
Church. In his encyclical, The Splendor of Truth, Pope John Paul II

Out of necessity this also includes other human persons and human community. The Pope's
understanding of personalism found its practical application in his ethics: the indispensable role of
freedom, the fulfillment of freedom in the loving gift of self to others and the effect that moral
choices have on the person who makes them. These few attributes were the ones that made him the
person he was. It all came from the love he has received from his closest family, his brother and
parents, of whom all three have died by the time he was 22 years old. Personalism is so central to
Karol Wojtyla's internal psychological and spiritual structure, that it overflows into his theology. An
example of that is his divine revelation as the personal messenger of God to all people. This also ties
in with the quintessential congregation of two personal realities, one of which is human and one
divine. It also covers various aspects of the religious freedom of the human person, social ethics,
grace and human sexuality. John Paul II was much disciplined in all these matters and shared the
love to oneself and others.
His theology and philosophy reached however even further than his religion. Despite his lack of
interest in politics, he has met and spoken to leaders of many countries. This was most

The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In Pope John...
Pope John Paul II found it important enough to talk about the relationship between faith and reason
in his encyclical Fides et Ratio. An encyclical is a letter that is sent to all of the bishops of the
Roman Catholic Church and addresses a problem, or important topic that the pope believes needs to
be discussed. In Fides et Ratio, Pope John Paul II really emphasizes the importance of the
relationship between faith and reason and how it has to do with the trust and faith put in God. This
encyclical written in 1998 was meant for all of the members of the Catholic Church to understand
and begin thinking about the big questions that define their faith, as well as to once again be able to
reason with their faith. If there was never a questioning of faith, there would be no reason for the
followers of the Catholic Church to continue to follow a man that we accept as our Lord. Faith and
reason go hand in hand just like identity and relevance. Without one, you cannot have the other and
still achieve full meaning. It is possible to have only faith and just live a life based on faith alone. It
is also possible to only reason through everything. However, when dealing with religion, Pope John
Paul II makes it a point to show the followers if Christ that they need to have an equal balance of
both faith and reason in order to attempt to comprehend who Jesus Christ the Son of God was, who
in fact God is, and have the knowledge to grow and understand the Roman Catholic beliefs.

Pope John Paul II Comparison
Karol Józef Wojtyła, famously known as Pope John Paul II, was the Bishop of Rome and the pope
of the Roman Catholic Church from October 1978 until his death on April 2005. As a pope, John
Paul II was the first non–Italian pope in more than four centuries and the first Polish pope of the
Roman Catholic Church. His papacy lasted for 27 years, which is to this day the second longest in
history (Blakemore, 2017). He was also one of the most polarizing figures during the late twentieth
century. Meanwhile, Pope John Paul II was more than just a pope because he had a different style of
papal leadership, diplomacy, and a high charisma unlike his previous predecessors such as Pope
Pius XII and Pope Paul VI (Scott, summer of 2000). Pope John Paul II transformed his influence as
a pope to a worldwide office and used it to preach more than a billion of people across the globe.
According to Scheller, Schaffer, Kurlantzick, Kulman, and Stille (2005), the pope was "a trained
actor and philosopher who understood the power of word and symbol and wielded both with
precision, whether in meetings with heads of state or before teeming crowds of the faithful (first
paragraph)." John Paul II also believed that the church can have a much bigger impact by having
world communications from different countries and he delivered the gospel by travelling around
different parts of the world. The late pope was also well–known for inventing the World Youth Day,

How Did Pope John Paul II Influence People
" I hope to have communion with the people with the people, that is the most important thing" was
stated by Pope John Paul II. This shows John Paul II's personality perfectly because he actually
cared about people. But, Pope John Paul II did not only care about Catholic people, he cared about
everyone. So, Pope John Paul II tried to relate with everyone which could consider him a very
influential person. Throughout his papal life, Pope John Paul II updated and strengthened the image
of the Catholic Church, solved many problems like communism and religious differences, and
reenergized the Church teachings and its members. Pope John Paul II updated and strengthened the
image of the Catholic Church because he traveled and talked to everyone. Before Pope John Paul II,
popes did not travel very far and some did not travel at all. This made it hard for people to put a face

How Can Pope John Paul II Be Considered An Effective Leader
Niccolo Machiavelli introduces particular ideals which concern effective leadership skills. Pope
John Paul II proved his ideals of leadership vastly differed from those Machiavelli proposed. During
his time as Pope, Pope John Paul II showed his love and compassion, connected with people, and
employed peaceful strategies to lead. Machiavelli would have disagreed with Pope John Paul II's
approach to leadership. Most notably, Machiavelli's positions that, "It is better to be feared, than
loved, if you cannot be both," and "The ends justify the means" did not agree with Pope John Paul's
ideology. Machiavelli would have viewed Pope John Paul II as an ineffective leader who does not

Analysis Of The Book ' Genesis '
Redeemer, defined by Merriam–Webster, means "a person who brings goodness, honor to something
again". In Catholicism this refers to the person who will carry out the last step of God's ultimate
plan, creation, sin, and salvation. We can see God's creation in the Book of Genesis. God spent six
days creating the universe, earth, animals, land, and humans. Humans were a different creation than
the other things God had created. When God created humans, "God created mankind in his
image...God blessed them" (Genesis 1:27). The next step in God's plan is sin. Sin was introduced to
mankind from God's given free will to humans. This caused Adam and Eve to be tricked by a
serpent into eating the forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden, thus, sin was introduced. The next
and last step in God's plan was salvation. Catholicism believes that humans and the world were not
totally corrupted by sin, rather temporarily fallen. It is believed that Christ is the lone savior of the
world because he is the son of God and God lives through Christ. In the Gospels, calling Christ the
redeemer is never mentioned, however in Paul's letters he references God bringing redemption to
the world. Therefore, God would bring salvation to the world through Christ as a redeemer. When
saying that Christ is the redeemer of the world, it means that God will following through with his
last step in his plan for salvation by bring redemption to the world through Christ. Pope John Paul II
in his encyclical Redemptor

Rerum Novarum : Capital And Labor By Pope Leo Xviii
The English title of Rerum Novarum is "Capital and Labor". It was written by Pope Leo XVIII in
1891. Pope Leo says that some of the aspects of the Industrial Revolution make us question a
variety of social issues. Leo also explains that the "rich get richer", a phrase that tells us that the rich
only benefit themselves. Leo talks about how the actions of the rich and the risks they take to better
themselves leave the poor in harsh conditions. The historical significance of this encyclical is that
this was made during the Industrial Revolution, a time where only the rich and powerful were able
to gain wealth through their new ideas and the ability to produce the machines to make the products.
This left the unprivileged and those in property to take the role as factory workers in harsh
conditions. Pope Leo XVIII talks about equality of one another and the right to private property.
The English title of Gaudium et Spes is "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World".
It was written by Pope Paul VI in 1965. Pope Paul VI talks about how the modern developments in
our world have both good and bad result. For example, he explains industrialization led to lots of
wealth as well as the harsh life of poverty. He says that people are not defined by their social status
and what they do for a living, Rather, everyone is made in God's image and He cares about
everybody.
The English title of Laborem Exercens is "Through Work". It was written by Pope John Paul II in

The Significance of the Pope
Among the institutions established throughout the span of human history intended to govern the
lives of men, perhaps none have been more lasting or have exerted more influence on the course of
history than that of the papacy. As the recognized successor to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus
Christ as the bishop of Rome and the leader of the universal church, the pope represents the spiritual
authority of Christendom and stands as a symbol of union within the Catholic Church. The continual
succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The List of
Popes) hold the title of "Vicar of Christ," and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a testament
to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western civilization. Long
based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been both a transformative
political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the inexorable pull of
progress. With more than 77 million individuals identifying themselves as Catholics around the
world as of 2011, the pope holds authority over a church with a larger population than France, the
United Kingdom or Italy (CARA Catholic Poll). The current pope, Benedict XVI, was elected in
2005 and has assumed the roles associated with the modern papacy, namely the appointment of
bishops and cardinals, the management of the Church's administrative affairs, convening ecumenical
councils to arbitrate

Taking a Look at Vatican II
Ecumenical councils are a practice that age back to the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine. An
ecumenical council is a conference of Christian bishops in order to resolve current issues affecting
the entire church . The councils would publish texts and legislation that would become crucial to the
development and operation of Christianity. The Second Vatican Council, or Vatican II, was the most
recent ecumenical council. Vatican II is considered to be one of the major events of the twentieth
century and impacted not only the church but also the modern world.
Vatican II came to be through Pope John XXIII. Pope John expressed his intentions of calling an
ecumenical council just three months after his election. This came as a shock to many because Pope
John was almost eighty years old at the time and was known by many to be an uncontroversial man.
His reasoning behind calling the council was pastoral in nature. This meant that Pope John wanted
the council to focus on the lives of believers and their experience of living the faith in the world as it
is today . Pope John wanted Vatican II to be a dialogue with those outside the church in order for the
church to become more positive and relaxed in modern times.
Vatican II made five notable contributions to the reform of the church. Those contributions were the
reform of the liturgy, the self–understanding of the church as "the people of God", relations with
other Christian churches and with non–Christian religions, the churches

Against the Death Penalty Essay
In the U.S. there has been a debate whether or not the death penalty should be used. It continues to
be a controversial issue in the world today. Some are for the death penalty, believing that a
punishment should fit the crime and it is the only necessary way to reprimand those who have
committed a terrible offense. Others believe that the death penalty violates human rights and that it
is inhumane, merciless, and cruel. In Kenneth Jost's article "Death Penalty Controversies", he
explains that critics and adversaries of the death penalty are warning that capital trials and
sentencing hearings are extremely flawed and inadequate that they risk resulting in the execution of
innocent people (Jost 785). "Supporters of capital punishment ... Show more content on

Thought and ideas of men such as Thomas Hobbes, John Mill, Thomas Aquinas, and Pope John
Paul II can be incorporated when considering and addressing this issue. Hobbes believes that all
men are equal and also men can claim the same right and benefits. In Leviathan Thomas Hobbes
said, "The right of nature, which writers commonly call Jus Naturale, is the liberty each man hath to
use his own power as he will himself for the preservation of his own nature; that is to say, of his
own life; and consequently, of doing anything which, in his own judgment and reason, he shall
conceive to be the aptest means thereunto" (Hobbes 91). Hobbes believes that naturally every man
has a right to everything (91). Hobbes believes that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He says
in Leviathon, "For where no covenant hath preceded, there hath no right been transferred, and every
man has right to everything and consequently, no action can be unjust. But when a covenant is
made, then to break it is unjust and the definition of injustice is no other than the not performance of
covenant. And whatsoever is not unjust is just" (Hobbes 100). Hobbes also feels that when
everyman is against everyman there is no common ground for justice to be established (100). John
Paul II believed that by nature, men are endowed with "universal, inviolable, and inalienable rights"
(John Paul II 1). He

How Did Pope John Paul II Decide To Become A Priest

  • 1. How Did Pope John Paul II Decide To Become A Priest The scene I found most significant in the Pope John Paul II movie was when Karol, aka Pope John Paul II's name before he became a Pope, decided to become a priest. The reason being is because it was actually a huge change in his life. Deciding to become a priest affected many people in different ways, but specifically himself is what I'm talking here. There was so many things going on his life/ he had so much potential for many other things. But he ultimately chose to be a priest. Karol's dad was a very religious person, thus making Karol very religious also. World War 2 was happening at this time and Karol says that we shouldn't use violence in any way just because the Nazis are using violence against them. So he prayed a few times. Karol ... Let's take a look at what religion has accomplished in the twenty–first century. Meet Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, former Archpriest of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome from 2004 to 2011. Cardinal Law was appointed by Pope John Paul II, considered in the Catholic Religion to be the Vicar of Christ on earth (earthly representative of Jesus). Before his appointment by the Pope in 2004, Cardinal Law was the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Boston when church documents showed he had, according to the Boston Globe, "covered up sexual abuse committed by dozens of Catholic priests within ... Now, let's look at where your religious contributions are heading when you put your hard–earned money into the offering basket during Sunday mass. The priest collects the funds, the funds are then sent to their supervisory figures, the Archpriests, then up to the Cardinals, and finally the Pope. And where has this money gone? To the families to silence them from letting you know of the rape and torture of your children at the hands of Catholic priests. To simply say or hear the word rape, assuming a priori that you understand what those children endured is part of the problem. You first need to put yourself in the mindset and physical body of a child as an authoritative figure in a white robe forces their heads in between the legs of the priest and forces them to perform disgusting ... • 3. The Center Of God 's Creation Man is God's creation and that is why he/she should be mindful of the dignity of every person, as well as of his/her situation in the present, modern world. We are the center of God's creation. We must not forget that through Christ's incarnation, God united with all people. Too often does man become a tool in the political games, or is played with, as others in power will it, which many times is "beyond the limits of one's legitimate rights and merits" (RH 18). People shouldn 't become slaves of the material things, political ideology, economical systems, or their own products. Everyone has his own life, and the desire to dominate cannot lead man into slavery created by economical system which places material gain over individual person. ... We can read in Genesis 1:28 that the Creator gave Man charge over all things that were created by Him: "Have dominion over the fish of the sea, Page 5 the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth. God also said, "See, I give you every seed–bearing plant on all the earth and every tree that has seed–bearing fruit on it to be your food." We have been given domination over the visible world and with our superiority comes moral responsibility. The Holy Father also is brining everyone's attention to see the loss of our spirituality and ethics over technology or material things in our lives. With the advance of technology and our own civilization, some basic morals are forgotten or neglected. The Pope urges to ask the following question during the process of every advance: Is this "future for technology in accord with man 's moral and spiritual progress?" (RH 18). In the context of this query, a new question is born: "Is man as a people of the world developing its humanity thanks to the technological progress?" Unfortunately, many times we can observe that spirituality and humanity, thanks to the development, degrades in its moral norms. The technological progress shows that we can do a lot of great things, and we can move with the progress very fast, but at the same time, we can ask another question: "Should we keep at this great ... Pope Francis's Influence On Papacy As Philadelphia prepares for Pope Francis' visit, he continues to make headlines for his continual use of the papacy power in an effort incite action in correcting many societal issues. And although the Pope's activism has been sensationalized in the media as novel, throughout the centuries the Pope has been a figure whose influence and power extends past the Catholic Church and taps into the realm of law and politics. This significant trend began with Pope Innocent III who reigned from 1198 until his death in 1216. In fact, that is notably why Pope John II, Encyclical letter the Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae) is more suited for this discussion because not only it is synthesized with biblical texts but John Paul elucidated his suppositions with Biblical imageries which provided foundations against abortion based on the Catholic Tradition. His name was Karol Jozef Wojtyla. By 1953, Wojtyla's thesis at Jagiellonian University was approved and he was awarded his second Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD). On July 4, 1958 Wojtyla was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow. It was then that he recalled Padre Pio's remark regarding the "highest post in the church" and knew intuitively that he would someday become pope. In October 1962, Wojtyla was one of many bishops to participate in the Second Vatican Council. Due to his great speaking skills, he was chosen to make a presentation. His wife, Bimosa, watched them eat his heart before they raped her, neighbours say. The trauma drove her insane. Two of the Kombis' four children had already died of malnutrition. Then, a fortnight ago, a distant relative came to collect the two survivors – an emaciated eight–year–old and four–year–old... However, even if these concepts did provide a realistic solution, the Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II are still going in the wrong direction, because if they were to try and end the million homicides occurring worldwide, their efforts would need to be collaborative. II. The Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II: Tezin Gyatso, the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, was born in Amdo, China on July 6, 1935 into a peasant family. At the age of two, Gyatso was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, and therefore an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Gyatso's life as the Dalai Lama began when he was enthroned at the age of four in Lhasa. However his political responsibilities did not arise until 1950 when thousands of soldiers of the People's Liberation Army invaded Lhasa. In 1959, the Tibetans held the largest demonstration against China's invasion of their home, therefore declaring Tibet's already established independence. This was known as the Tibetan National Uprising, which was crushed by the Chinese army. As a result, Gyatso and over 100,000 Tibetans fled across the Himalayas and into India where His Holiness was given political asylum. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of these saints include St. Vincent De Paul, St. Benedict of Nursia, and St. Giles; however most of these saints did their good deeds one hundred or more years ago. In the past century some people were inspired by these people of the past and decided to continue the work that theses saints started. One of the most important people who heard the call and gave up their life in order to follow it is St. Pope John Paul the Second. St. Pope John Paul the Second was born on "May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland" (Blakemore). His birth name was "Karol Józef Wojtyła" (Blakemore), but he later changed it after he became the Pope. • 14. The Catholic Church Essay The Catholic Church The Catholic Church in the 20th Century underwent tremendous change, most significantly as a result of the Second Vatican Council. This Council created an atmosphere of reform within the leading theologians and the hierarchy of the Church. Consequently, when Pope Paul VI released his encyclical Humanae Vitae, to many of the reformers it seemed to contradict the sentiment of the Council. At the same time, though, there was a movement afoot to radically change the power structure of the Church. Led by the same liberal theologians who took offense to the pro–life policies laid out in Humanae Vitae, the aim was to transition the Church from an authoritarian power structure to a more democratic model. (McInerny 17–18) This image is very symbolic of the attempt to overthrow the teaching authority of the Pope taking place in the Catholic Church following the historic release of Humanae Vitae, an important papal encyclical following the religious revolution known as Vatican II. Unremarkable for its content, which simply reaffirmed the current Church views on contraceptive use, the response to Humanae Vitae has been shocking. The controversy over Humanae Vitae revealed a schism between liberal and conservative elements in the Church. This rift included the Church's view of birth control, but on a deeper level was about the right of the Pope to dictate the official Church teaching without following the dictates of the laity, bishops, cardinals, or theologians. Leading the liberal, revolutionary forces were the Church's leading theologians, and guiding the conservative, counter– revolutionary side was the Pope, primarily under Pope Paul VI. To understand the response of theologians, it is important to look at the conditions surrounding the encyclical's release. In 1959 Pope John XXIII announced that the ... • 17. How Did Pope Francis Influence Its Followers In conclusion, the results proved the first part of my hypothesis and disproved the second part. Pope Francis's approval ratings have little to do with how much a nation's Catholics agree with the Pope on "domestic issues". I suggest this may be a result of the less religious aspects of the modern Pope. The Pope is a world leader and has a large foreign policy presence that transcends basic church theology and scripture. Pope Francis, like Pope John Paul II, is a man who can influence the world in ways that most secular leaders cannot. Pope Francis's calls to end wars, promote the environment, and defend human rights have won him the praise of the world. Fortunately for church, sometimes negative perceptions of the church have not bogged down the approval of Pope Francis. Unfortunately for the church, the popularity for the Pope has not caused Catholics worldwide to adopt all the Church's positions. One could argue that Pope Francis's popularity is a result of his perceived progressivism compared to other Catholic leaders. However, Pope Francis unquestionably still stands politically to the right of average Catholic worldwide on social issues, despite his perceived liberal streak. Nonetheless, as the data showed, Pope Francis approval rating did not correlate with how socially conservative or liberal a country is. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cantalamessa pointed out, "The prophetic intuition of Pope Paul VI had a determining role in this (recognition of the CCR by the Church). In that, on Pentecost of 1975 at a meeting with its leaders, he defined the Charismatic Renewal as a 'chance' for the Church." Cardinal L.J. Suenens, a protagonist of CCR, recognized it as "a current of grace" and convinced Pope Paul VI of the need for the Church to accept and encourage the Renewal in order that it should not grow in isolation. In the summer of 1975, some 10,000 Catholic charismatics gathered in the Catacombs of St. Callistus in Rome for the Second International Congress. A special Mass was celebrated with singing in tongues and prophecies at the Papal Altar in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome followed by the historic special audience with Pope Paul VI. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) is much indebted to Saint Pope John Paul II for its growth and acceptance in the Church through the unfailing support it received throughout his Pontificate. At a special audience on 7 May 1981 to the participants of the Fourth International Leaders' Conference in Rome, Saint John Paul II said that he made his own the words of St Paul, "I give thanks to God every time I think of you" (Phil 1:3). Prior to his election, the future Pope Benedict XVI gave a very supportive description of the Renewal in The Ratzinger Report: "In the heart of a world desiccated by rationalistic skepticism a new experience of the Holy Spirit has come about, ... The topic of homosexual marriages has been a very hotly contested issue and has in recent years become an even more heavily debated topic, particularly in the Catholic Church. Now, Catholics have always had a very definite stance on homosexuality and more importantly homosexual marriage. They have always had the belief that marriage is, and should remain, exclusively between a man and a woman. I too, being a Catholic myself, held this belief for quite some time until I actually looked into scripture, and I discovered that the Catholic Church has been thinking backwards. Rome instructs that we do not judge the sinner; we only judge the sin. While we are taught to not pass judgment on gays for being homosexual, we are to oppose any and all homosexual acts. Pope John Paul II spoke extensively on gay marriage and teaches that, "The presence of the feminine element, alongside the male element and together with it, signifies an enrichment for men in the whole perspective of his history" (Pope John Paul II). Pope John Paul II raises an excellent point; there are fantastic benefits to marriage enjoyed by both spouses. There are many health benefits to marriage: including longer lifespan, improved overall happiness, someone to monitor your health, someone to live for, and shorter stays in hospital. However, the question remains that if marriage is such a wonderful, beneficial thing, why are gays prevented from participating? Well the Vatican has many answers that can all be conveniently found in one volume, the Bible. Pope Paul VI performed his masses outdoors while Pope Francis performs them in the Vatican Guest House Chapel where he chooses to live in order to be more connected to the people and to live simply. Both popes have made it a part of their mission to incorporate the Churches traditions into new modern customs in order to speak directly to the world, especially its youth. Although both popes were known for their common love to connect with the people, they had varying opinions on certain teachings of the Church. For many believers John Paul was a great icon and governed their church in the most respectful way. Since his election in 1978, there have been many books, movies and articles on the life of Karol Wojtyla. Many studies depicted him as one of the greatest Popes' Catholicism ever had. Out of necessity this also includes other human persons and human community. The Pope's understanding of personalism found its practical application in his ethics: the indispensable role of freedom, the fulfillment of freedom in the loving gift of self to others and the effect that moral choices have on the person who makes them. These few attributes were the ones that made him the person he was. It all came from the love he has received from his closest family, his brother and parents, of whom all three have died by the time he was 22 years old. Personalism is so central to Karol Wojtyla's internal psychological and spiritual structure, that it overflows into his theology. An example of that is his divine revelation as the personal messenger of God to all people. This also ties in with the quintessential congregation of two personal realities, one of which is human and one divine. It also covers various aspects of the religious freedom of the human person, social ethics, grace and human sexuality. John Paul II was much disciplined in all these matters and shared the love to oneself and others. His theology and philosophy reached however even further than his religion. • 27. The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In Pope John... Pope John Paul II found it important enough to talk about the relationship between faith and reason in his encyclical Fides et Ratio. An encyclical is a letter that is sent to all of the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church and addresses a problem, or important topic that the pope believes needs to be discussed. In Fides et Ratio, Pope John Paul II really emphasizes the importance of the relationship between faith and reason and how it has to do with the trust and faith put in God. This encyclical written in 1998 was meant for all of the members of the Catholic Church to understand and begin thinking about the big questions that define their faith, as well as to once again be able to reason with their faith. If there was never a questioning of faith, there would be no reason for the followers of the Catholic Church to continue to follow a man that we accept as our Lord. Faith and reason go hand in hand just like identity and relevance. Without one, you cannot have the other and still achieve full meaning. It is possible to have only faith and just live a life based on faith alone. It is also possible to only reason through everything. However, when dealing with religion, Pope John Paul II makes it a point to show the followers if Christ that they need to have an equal balance of both faith and reason in order to attempt to comprehend who Jesus Christ the Son of God was, who in fact God is, and have the knowledge to grow and understand the Roman Catholic beliefs. • 28. Pope John Paul II Comparison Karol Józef Wojtyła, famously known as Pope John Paul II, was the Bishop of Rome and the pope of the Roman Catholic Church from October 1978 until his death on April 2005. As a pope, John Paul II was the first non–Italian pope in more than four centuries and the first Polish pope of the Roman Catholic Church. His papacy lasted for 27 years, which is to this day the second longest in history (Blakemore, 2017). He was also one of the most polarizing figures during the late twentieth century. Meanwhile, Pope John Paul II was more than just a pope because he had a different style of papal leadership, diplomacy, and a high charisma unlike his previous predecessors such as Pope Pius XII and Pope Paul VI (Scott, summer of 2000). Pope John Paul II transformed his influence as a pope to a worldwide office and used it to preach more than a billion of people across the globe. According to Scheller, Schaffer, Kurlantzick, Kulman, and Stille (2005), the pope was "a trained actor and philosopher who understood the power of word and symbol and wielded both with precision, whether in meetings with heads of state or before teeming crowds of the faithful (first paragraph)." John Paul II also believed that the church can have a much bigger impact by having world communications from different countries and he delivered the gospel by travelling around different parts of the world. • 35. Analysis Of The Book ' Genesis ' Redeemer, defined by Merriam–Webster, means "a person who brings goodness, honor to something again". In Catholicism this refers to the person who will carry out the last step of God's ultimate plan, creation, sin, and salvation. We can see God's creation in the Book of Genesis. God spent six days creating the universe, earth, animals, land, and humans. Humans were a different creation than the other things God had created. When God created humans, "God created mankind in his image...God blessed them" (Genesis 1:27). The next step in God's plan is sin. Sin was introduced to mankind from God's given free will to humans. This caused Adam and Eve to be tricked by a serpent into eating the forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden, thus, sin was introduced. The next and last step in God's plan was salvation. Catholicism believes that humans and the world were not totally corrupted by sin, rather temporarily fallen. It is believed that Christ is the lone savior of the world because he is the son of God and God lives through Christ. In the Gospels, calling Christ the redeemer is never mentioned, however in Paul's letters he references God bringing redemption to the world. Therefore, God would bring salvation to the world through Christ as a redeemer. When saying that Christ is the redeemer of the world, it means that God will following through with his last step in his plan for salvation by bring redemption to the world through Christ. • 37. Rerum Novarum : Capital And Labor By Pope Leo Xviii The English title of Rerum Novarum is "Capital and Labor". It was written by Pope Leo XVIII in 1891. Pope Leo says that some of the aspects of the Industrial Revolution make us question a variety of social issues. Leo also explains that the "rich get richer", a phrase that tells us that the rich only benefit themselves. Leo talks about how the actions of the rich and the risks they take to better themselves leave the poor in harsh conditions. The historical significance of this encyclical is that this was made during the Industrial Revolution, a time where only the rich and powerful were able to gain wealth through their new ideas and the ability to produce the machines to make the products. This left the unprivileged and those in property to take the role as factory workers in harsh conditions. Pope Leo XVIII talks about equality of one another and the right to private property. • 38. The Significance of the Pope Among the institutions established throughout the span of human history intended to govern the lives of men, perhaps none have been more lasting or have exerted more influence on the course of history than that of the papacy. As the recognized successor to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus Christ as the bishop of Rome and the leader of the universal church, the pope represents the spiritual authority of Christendom and stands as a symbol of union within the Catholic Church. The continual succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The List of Popes) hold the title of "Vicar of Christ," and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a testament to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western civilization. Long based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been both a transformative political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the inexorable pull of progress. With more than 77 million individuals identifying themselves as Catholics around the world as of 2011, the pope holds authority over a church with a larger population than France, the United Kingdom or Italy (CARA Catholic Poll). • 39. Taking a Look at Vatican II Ecumenical councils are a practice that age back to the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine. An ecumenical council is a conference of Christian bishops in order to resolve current issues affecting the entire church . The councils would publish texts and legislation that would become crucial to the development and operation of Christianity. The Second Vatican Council, or Vatican II, was the most recent ecumenical council. Vatican II is considered to be one of the major events of the twentieth century and impacted not only the church but also the modern world. Vatican II came to be through Pope John XXIII. Pope John expressed his intentions of calling an ecumenical council just three months after his election. This came as a shock to many because Pope John was almost eighty years old at the time and was known by many to be an uncontroversial man. His reasoning behind calling the council was pastoral in nature. This meant that Pope John wanted the council to focus on the lives of believers and their experience of living the faith in the world as it is today . Pope John wanted Vatican II to be a dialogue with those outside the church in order for the church to become more positive and relaxed in modern times. Vatican II made five notable contributions to the reform of the church. Those contributions were the reform of the liturgy, the self–understanding of the church as "the people of God", relations with other Christian churches and with non–Christian religions, the churches ...
