Art and math- 6. ISTITUTO DI ISTRUZIONE SUPERIORE "G.LAPIRA"-
1. USING ART TO EXPLORE MATH AND MATH
TO CREATE ART
At first Math and Art may seem to be really different things but
there is a large amount of Math involved in Art.
2. • The most evident points in common between Art and Math concern:
PERSPECTIVE
3. GOLDEN RATIO
• Roughly equal to 1,618, it corresponds to the division of a segment in two
parts such that the bigger will be an average between the smaller and the
whole segment.
4. PERSPECTIVE
• It is the art of rapresenting 3 dimensional objects on a
2 dimensional surface as to give the right impression
of their height, width and depth.
In 1415 the Italian architect Filippo Brunelleschi demonstrated the geometrical
method of applying perspective in Florence, using similar triangles as formulated
by Euclid before.
5. LEONARDO DA VINCI AND THE VITRUVIAN MAN
where Leonardo expressed the idea of the Roman architect Vitruvius showing the
male figure twice and centring him in both a circle and a square.
Even Da Vinci incorporated linear
perspective in a vast number of his work
like the Monalisa and the Vitruvian Man
6. WHEN ART MEETS ASTRONOMY
• Art and and Astronomy have a large quantity
of points in common. More then once in the
past a plenty of painters used to inspire their
paintings or creations on astronomy stuff, like
Jan Vermeer “ THE ASTRONOMER”, or
Eratostane “ THE ARMILLARY SPHERE”.
7. • On the other hand the relation between Art and
Astronomy is still now present. For example we can
mention the two artists who created representations of
the TRAPPIST-1 system that give us a look at
the process.
8. TRAPPIST-1 SYSTEM: Robert Hurt and Tim Pyle
• It can be hard to visualize something you can't see, so when NASA
announced the TRAPPIST-1 system, they knew they needed to get some
great artists to visually represent the amazing new system. Robert Hurt
and Tim Pyle, came together to create visualizations of the TRAPPIST-1
system.
