Human Capital – The company will determine which employees are essential to the manufacturing side of the facility and offer to temporarily transfer
them to other locations to work and help ease the stress of increasing production. Other employees will be given normal salaries while the Pittsburgh
site is inoperable. It is to be understood that most workers will not want to come into work however the company could offer an incentive such as an
extra vacation day, and overtime hours to workers who come in despite the circumstances.
3.Continuity Teams and Leadership– The planning chief will review plans, the emergency services will be the main coordinator, the staff coordinator
will update the plan on a regular basis, the operations manager will train staff, and the training coordinator will document developments.
4.Delegation of Authority– In order to keep control of the facility delegation authority of command must be in place. The finance team will be
responsible in determining budgets. Human resource will contact employees to see who is available. The head supervisor of the facility will be in
charge in contacting the inspectors and removing the trailers.
5.Facilities– In the event that the Pittsburgh facility is not safe to work in we will have to transfer all possible machines and materials to alternate
location located in Hamburg and Singapore.

Texas Is Flat Land Mass Is Not All Flat
Texas is the second largest State in the United States consisting of 261,914 sq. miles. When you travel out of state, for business or pleasure, there is
usually one person that asks the question, 'Do you own cows?' Most people from other States believe that Texas is flat pasture land where everyone
owns cattle or has an oil derrick in their backyard. Texas' large land mass is not all flat. Far West Texas or The Trans

With this many different type terrain there comes different types of weather and climate. Normally in Texas the temperatures usually don't fluctuate
that much. It's normally colder north and warmer in the south, as well as, wetter in the east than the west. However, we will explore the weather and
climate of Texas' past. We will start in the decade of 1940's and move to 50's and 60's, and discover the routes of past hurricanes, along with the
rainfall and temperatures of the Upper Coast, South Central Texas and the Edwards Plateau (Nielsen–Gammon).
The Forty's begins with so much rain, the state records 40 inches or more making it the wettest across the state. Six hurricanes are recorded in the
1940's. September 23rd, 1941 a hurricane hit at Matagorda Bay, traveled through Houston taking four lives and causing six million dollars in
damages. The early warnings is what helped save many lives. August 30, 1942 one skirted the coast with 100 mile an hour winds which traveled up to
the Edwards Plateau causing 26 million dollars in crop damage. We aren't done yet, a tropicalstorm came ashore the Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston
Bay leaving behind One million dollars in damages. The year 1943 has more destruction from a hurricane on July 27th. As it moved across the
Bolivar Peninsula with wind gusts at 104 mph, it dropped 17.8 inches of rain in a 24 hour period recorded at Port Arthur and leaving 16 million

Hurricane Matthew
Hurricanes form over warm, tropical oceans and are very powerful storms. These type of storms are actually the most violent on the Earth. For example,
of these powerful and destructive storms was Hurricane Matthew. Hurricane Matthew occurred from September 28th through October 9th, 2016, and
affected the Caribbean and Southeast U.S. Hurricanes, being the powerful and violent storms they are, can cause lots of destruction to cities, states, and
/or countries. To begin with, there are many causes of hurricanes. Hurricanes are created by thunderstorms gathering together in a spinning circle
(Aboff & Sotirovski, 2012). Furthermore, hurricanes need many ingredients in order to form, such as warm, tropical ocean water and wind. For instance,

The final stage in the development of a hurricane is known as the cyclone or the hurricane step. The cyclone's winds are now more powerful than
ever before in its earlier stages, at 74 mph and above. The hurricane has also grown in the sense of height and width, now being around 50,000 feet
high, and 125 miles across. In addition to these lengths, the hurricane's eye is in the range of five and 30 miles wide. When the hurricane reaches
land, it will weaken because it does not have the necessary ingredients to continue to grow and survive (SciJinks, 2016). For instance, one of these very
powerful and destructive storms formed on September 28th, 2016 near the Windward Islands. Hurricane Matthew left a path of destruction from the
Caribbean to the southeast of the United States of America. Matthew was formed when a tropical wave was pushed off of the coast of Africa. After
going through the first three stages, the storm known as Matthew developed into a tropical storm, in which it received a name. Eventually, Tropical
Storm Matthew reached the eastern Caribbean, where it became a hurricane, adjusting its name to Hurricane Matthew. During the days of September
30th and October 1st, Hurricane Matthew reached its peak as a Category five hurricane, with winds at

Texas Tornado Research Paper
On March 28, 2000, our city of Fort Worth was hit by an F3 tornado. After hearing about tornados on the news year after year, I decided to write on
the tornado that hit Fort Worth because it happened when I was a kid and I can recall how the buildings looked like for a while after the storm and
how the downtown area has evolved over the years after the tornado. I also find it to be interesting in finding out why we are hit so often. Texas is one
of the hardest states hit by tornados. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are on average 155 tornados in Texas
per year since 1991–2010. This is an impressive number compared to other states. Texas, is known to be in what is popularly known as tornado alley.

At 6:15 p.m., a devastating tornado hit the downtown area of Fort Worth, Arlington, and Grand Prairie areas. The tornado that struck downtown Fort
Worth was an F2 tornado on the Fujita scale, but an F3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The thunderstorms that the tornado arose from brought flash
floods, strong winds, and hail. The tornado funnel developed directly over the city, descended, and stayed on the ground for at least 15 min (Brewster,
2004). The path of the tornado was recorded and after examining the damage it was determined the tornado began its damage in the municipality of
River Oaks where damage had been done to homes and Castleberry High School. The tornado continued its path crossing the Trinity River where it then
took a turn at the intersection of West 6th street and University Dr. It then took on a eastern direction damaging more homes. The tornado continued its
path toward downtown leaving destruction to the Cash America building, the Bank One tower, Calvary Cathedral and many other buildings. The
tornado finally dissipated when it hit I–35, but its parent cell continued to cause damage to homes, trees, and fences (Wikipedia.org). Another
thunderstorm system began to arise in Johnson county and made its way northeast ward to meet up with the parent cell from the Fort Worth tornado,
this produced a second tornado that hit Arlington and Grand Prairie. This tornado also reached

Toowoomba City is located 125km from Brisbane in Queensland on the Western side of the Great Dividing Range. It consists of two main creek
catchments, east creek and west creek catchments. In January 2011 there was a main flooding event which caused a large flood event that is described
as an "Inland Tsunami". Figure 1 – Catchment map of Toowoomba identifying major hydraulic features. Source [1]
The factors that contributed to the major storm was:
There was an initial rainfall even of 90mm which occurred over 24 hours before which caused the catchments to be fully saturated. As a result any
major rainfall events would be converted directly into surface water runoff
Most of the catchments depicted in Figure 1 where fully urbanised which caused surfaces in the catchment to be impervious; that is very little runoff
would infiltrate into the ground
There were intense rainfall events that occurred over the Gowrie creek catchment; with an event greater than a 100 year ARI storm experienced at the
rainfall gauges
Due to the large intensities of rainfalls caused both East and West creeks to fill up. Due to both creeks flowing in the same direction no drainage could
occur to Gworiee creek causing inundation shown in Appendix Figure 2 – Recorded Maximum rainfall intensities and Serveries in Toowoomba, 10

Detached from Hurricane Ike
The world's attention was focused on the devastating events of Hurricane Ike and the turmoil left in its wake. 300 miles north of the storm's epicentre,
a little girl of 7 years appeared fascinated by the commotion surrounding her. She pressed her face up against the window of her father's car, gazing out
with intensity. All the neighbourhood shops had transformed into amateur forts overnight with sandbags blocking the doors, windows boarded, and
ugly signs saying "Closed for Ike". The sky was purple, the dark clouds churned with discontent.
She frowned in annoyance, her favourite restaurant barricaded and abandoned. The Pizza Palace only mirrored the rest of Houston but the girl started
to feel afraid. She pulled back from the window and subconsciously started to chew the ends of her long blonde hair whilst her expression changed in
thought. Her teachers, who often claimed she was quiet and maybe too thoughtful, would have easily recognised the look.
All that was on the radio was news about the coming storm. The weatherman sounded scared. "The sudden change in Hurricane Ike's direction has
caught everyone off guard and the storm is heading directly towards Houston, all residents are advised to take shelter as there is no time for
evacuation. Ike is gaining strength from the Gulf and is predicted to hit Houston as a category 3 hurricane." The girl's father was quickly tried to
reassure her but she could tell he was nervous as the car sped up. A few minutes later the car

Descriptive Essay On A Rainy Season
Cumulus clouds gather in the east and stand towering like pillars from a mythological age. Crashing together, the friction causes the huge clouds to
glow eerily from the inside out. They quickly grew angrier, launching their bolts of lightning toward earth. The air becomes thick with humidity and the
wind starts to blow. The ground trembles from the claps of thunder that echo past and reverberate back off of the mountains; it's a deafening roar. Here
in the Southwestern United States in late summer; the days are brutally long, scorching hot, and the ground is cracked and dry. This is the monsoon
season.
On a hot day, cooling off by the lake is what I like to do. It seems as though everyone else has the same idea. The boaters are out in full force
skimming along the water in their crafts. Families are camped by the water's edge under tarps for shade. They mindfully watch their little ones play
and splash in the water. As the day wears on, the boaters leisurely find their way back to the launch ramps. The families round up the kids, pack up
their gear and head back to the homestead. Everything was calm and tranquil, and the only sounds were the gentle waves breaking on the shore. Then
a flash of light catches my eye, I turn to look and I see a monster approaching.
Moments later, everything went silent and still. The birds are no longer singing their joyful song. The lake became wave less and serene. I could feel
the pressure of the atmosphere weighing down on me like a heavy burden. This is what is called the calm before the storm. Like a whisper the wind
gently blew across my face and rustled my hair filling it with static electricity. Then the wind started its fury–the hot blowing sand stung as it hit my
skin. It burned my eyes and filled my nose. I could taste the grit in my mouth. The trees bent over without mercy and whiplashed back the other
way. The lake turned a dark electric green and the waves rolled violently with caps of white. And not too far off in the distance, cells of rain kicked
up the dust and made steam rise as the speeding rain reached the parched ground. The sky grew black as the imposing clouds illuminated a glowing
white. They were filled with flashes of light that danced erratically

Hydroclimate of the Northwest of the United States Essay
Although runoff and streamflow have generally decreased in the Northwest over the past century (Luce and Holden, 2009), instances of flooding –
particularly in rain–dominated and 'transition' basins – have increased over the same period (Hamlet and Lettenmaier, 2007), and are often driven by
exceptional precipitation events. Impacts are basin specific and dependent on antecedent conditions, though higher intensity storms generally result in
increased flooding and runoff risk, and such events can disrupt systems ranging from ecological (e.g. Knapp et al., 2008), to agricultural (e.g.
Rosenzweig et al., 2000), to urban (e.g. Rosenberg et al., 2010). Further, the synchronicity of precipitation across a basin or region has the potential to...

Gershunov and Barnett, 1998). ii. The Inland Northwest The region to the east of the Cascades is typified by generally sunnier and drier conditions as
compared to the PNW. Annual average precipitation across the Inland Northwest (INW) is less than 50cm, with a greater percentage of that
precipitation coming during the late spring and early summer months. Lower average annual precipitation amounts exist even within the higher
elevation mountainous areas of northern Idaho, northeastern Oregon, and western Montana, with annual averages of only 150–250cm as compared to
the 200–500cm MAP in the mountain ranges west of the Cascade crest (CESE, UW). The sub–regional variability of MAP within the INW exists
primarily as a result of orographic effects (is this correct???). B. Extreme precipitation events in the Northwest i. Defining 'extreme' The definition of
'extreme' can vary across studies. In some studies (e.g. Karl et al., 1995), if a fixed threshold value is exceeded an event is considered extreme.
However, this method for defining extreme events is not suitable for a region like the Northwest with large spatial variability in rainfall amounts. A
preferable method is to define an extreme event at point i as one in which the precipitation total for the event falls within the xth

The Causes Of Climate Change
Climate change is described as a phenomenon in which the regularity of the climate undergoes temperal or precipatation changes. Climate itself is the
constant long term weather pattern of a particular region. Each region has it's own variations of climate, of which there are 5 groupings, and each
climate dictates the regions vegetation, species type, soil fertility, and even population locations. First and foremost, one cannot examine the evidence
and result of climate change without first discussing the greenhouse effect, a natural warming of the earth and it's recent increase which has
exacerbated the issue of climate change. The greenhouse effect is a process in which certain gases within the atmospere trap some of the sun's solar
radiation projected down to Earth. This process composed of the gases, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and even water vapor, is
essential as it allows the Earth to regulate a regular warm temperature and thereby allow liquid water to reside on the surface (Reichard, 2014). These
greenhouse gases, a normal part of Earths biosphere, can be released through natural process like from a Volcanic eruption or the decaying of
vegetation. Scientist have however, proven that human contribution has greatly added to the levels within the atmosphere which coincide with the
highened global warming of the planet, future predictions of drastic climate change, and the current atypical occurrances of natural hazards. As these
gases increase in

Hurricane Emily Research Paper
Hurricane Emily
Hurricane Emily was a powerful tropical cyclone that wreaked havoc across the Caribbean Sea to Mexico. It broke the record for being the strongest
hurricane formed, just days after Hurricane Dennis had done so. The storm formed on July 10th, 2005 in the centre of the Atlantic Ocean. It then
passed over the Windward Islands on the 14th, before traveling west–northwest and slowly intensified over the Caribbean until it hit its peak as a
Category 5 hurricane on July 16th. This made it the first category 5 hurricane of the year. Thestorm travelled over the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category
4, and Emily hit the Gulf of Mexico and Tamaupullas in the next few days. On July 20th, the storm dissipated within 24 hours. The scientific name for
this type of storm is a 'tropical cyclone'; however, when formed over the Atlantic Ocean or the Eastern Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes.
Hurricanes are formed in intense low pressure areas in these oceans. The fuel of a hurricane is water vapour from the surface of the ocean. This water
vapour condenses to form clouds and rain which, in turn, warms the surrounding air. When there is little wind shear over the ocean (this is what usually
takes the heat away), the heat will build up and cause pressure to form. This causes wind to spiral in on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

nowhere to go, because of the hospital flooding, and many people were left jobless, having no way to earn money for food or clean water. Damages
in Jamaica came up to $65 million, although, again, many homes were flooded and several families were homeless. Several crops, such as bananas,

One Mile Of Ice Analysis
One Mile of Imagery To place a reader in the mind of a character, the author must create a scenario which will appeal to the senses, and keep readers
intrigued. The technique of building imagery can successfully transform the world around the reader, and connect them to the story. One Mile of Ice by
Hugh Garner uses many imagery–building techniques to place readers in the mind of a man on the verge of death. In this story, Hugh Garner tells the
tale of two brother–in–laws, Ralph and Pete, who venture off into town, accompanied by mare and sleigh, to get presents for the children for
Christmas. However, their journey takes a very dark turn not too far into their adventure. The crisp winds become a blinding storm, in which Ralph and
Pete are forced to fight for their lives. Unfortunately, only one man survives – Pete. One Mile of Ice uses visual components to build imagery, as well
as tactile techniques to throw readers into the mind of the protagonist. Alongside this, the author uses auditory traits to reproduce the true terror
experienced in this story by these brother–in–laws. Visual imagery is often the first step to subconsciously sending the reader into a parallel state of
mind as the protagonist, and letting them experience what the characters experienced throughout the story. The visuals used in the beginning of this
story convince readers that they have been placed in a safe, secure environment, therefore having a positive effect on readers when they

Based on model tests, Civica will propose the modelling approach for Don River watershed. At the proposal stage, Civica would propose two
approaches. The first approach is to create two models with different channel lengths. For small storms, the full length will be used. And for large
storms, the length of valley corridor will be used. As the calibration and validation storms are usually small storms. The large storm model can't be
calibrated. It also increase the difficulty to manage different models. The second approach is to change the model algorithms to dynamically change to
corresponding channel length based on water level. A threshold water level could be given to each channel element. If water level exceed the threshold

What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Human Greed
Human greed's and Weaknesses
Human Activities
1)Natural Defences
Plants and geologic features make up an ever–present natural defines against flooding. Grasses, shrubs and trees help keep healthy topsoil in place to
absorb excess rainfall, and extensive root systems can absorb some excess water before it overwhelms a region. Naturally occurring waterways, flood
plains and wetlands all serve as safety valves for floods, drawing high waters away and dispersing them safely. Unfortunately, human activities can
disrupt both of these systems, increasing the likelihood and severity of floods.
2)Agriculture and Deforestation
Large–scale agricultural operations can deplete topsoil, reducing the amount of nutrients present and degrading its quality. This can lead to a
weakening of the surrounding plant life, reducing its ability to protect against floods. Similarly, deforestation can remove the anchors keeping rich soil
in place, allowing it to wash away and leaving dry, dusty soil in its place –– ill–suited to absorbing heavy rainfall. This increases the amount of water
that washes into rivers and streams, adding to the volume that passes through the water system and causing floods.
3)Human Development
Rural and urban ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, again the root cause is human activities. To reduce flooding in the near future, we need to address the human causes of flooding. Flood management
in Malaysia is still largely dependent on structural measures (e.g. building SMART Tunnel, dams, embankments, retention ponds etc.). These do not
solve the root causes of flooding which are humans and their activities. We need to put more emphasis on non–structural measures (e.g. legislation
/regulation and enforcement, land use control, awareness and education, flood disaster management, flood warning

The Great Depression Of The United States And Canadian...
Summary
As the Great Depression continued to tighten its grip on America, nature turned against many already suffering Americans. The Dusty Bowl, also know
as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damages the ecology and agricultural production of the United States and Canadian
plains. Many farmers and ranchers were driven to the Great Plains by the American sense of expansion. The land they inhabited was used primarily for
ranching till advances in agricultural mechanization and high grain prices caused by World War I, made agriculture more productive as ever; thus
causing farmers to exploit the land in their attempt to make a large profit, setting up the region for an environmental catastrophe. As a result of over
farming, a failure to implement dryland farming techniques–which would have prevented topsoil wind erosion–and a severe drought, 150,000 square
miles of land in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, faced havoc not previously seen in American history. The first "black
blizzard" occurred in 1931, and they occurred till conservation efforts in the 1940s, but the damage had been done, reflected on the upturned land and
record heat, as well as the unleashed swarm of locust and jackrabbits, causing terror in children and adults alike. Consequently, massive amounts of
people migrated from the plains fleeing the storms, and those who stayed faced the harmful effects from the inhalation of dust particles.

Every year we practice tornado drills for our safety. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. They
can destroy large buildings, trees and vehicles hundreds of yards. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide to 50 miles long. In an average
year, 1000 tornadoes are reported nationwide. Tornadoes form out of thunderstorms, where moist air rises, cools and condenses into clouds that release
heat and force cooler air back down. If the updrafts are strong enough, the feedback loop forms an air vortex that continues to shunt more moist air
upwards and eventually forms a tornado. Tornadoes have not gotten dangerous over time, after having a big dot in the middle of the U.S. Population has

Blizzard Of 2016
1.0Introduction
1.1 Aim
This report will investigate the USA blizzard of 2016 and about how it was caused, the social, environmental and economic impacts that is cause and
how the disaster was managed. The report will make recommendations for the future management of blizzards.
1.2 Background
A blizzard is a type of atmospheric hazard and is a long–lasting snow storm with intense snowfall and strong winds. For a blizzard to form, warm air
rising and moister is needed to create clouds for precipitation to occur. Aswind moves across a body of water (ocean, lake), some of the water
evaporates, putting water vapour into the air. Warm air rises over cold air by winds pulling the cold air towards the equator from the North and South
poles as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To prepare for the disaster people had to have enough food and supplies in case the inclement weather knocks out heat, electricity and telephone service,
such as a flashlight with extra batteries, a portable radio, heating fuel, matches, extra blankets, candles and first–aid supplies. It's important to stock up
on non–perishable foods that are high–energy foods (dried fruit, nuts and energy bars), canned products and items not need refrigerated and a manual
can opener and bottled water. People who live in blizzard prone areas can build their houses with a sloped roof in order to avoid accumulation of
snow so instead it falls off and its import to protect water pipes from freezing. Insulting walls, attics, doors and windows or they can install

Mississippi Solo Figurative Language
Figurative language in the memoir "Mississippi Solo" by Eddy Harris Have you ever been on a canoe journey alone? In the story "mississippi
solo" by Eddy Harris, the author uses figurative language to give a vivid picture of his extraordinary experience of canoeing down the Mississippi
river. In his story he uses personification, simile, metaphor, and hyperbole to help readers give a visual of his experience. Some personification he
uses is in lines 53, witch says "But the voice of the river came out and spoke to me teasingly but with a chill of seriousness down my spine." that
quote means that the river was moving him the way he did not want to go. The other figurative language was in lines 101, it was "The storm slid

Howard County Flood Analysis
Flooding is one of the many risks that people and their private properties assume when they consider living in a specific geographic location. This is
true for the residents of Howard County, as they live near the Chesapeake Bay, whose tributaries branch off into smaller rivers, streams and lakes.
Due to the fact that Howard County is more developed in the southeast and more rural in the west, there is a correlation between the risk of flooding
and the presence of human development. (any cite here?) Natural factors play an integral role in determining the probability of flooding in a particular
section of the county as well. People and their private properties are highly impacted by flooding, as it can cause death and injuries to humans... Show

For instance, they have detailed information about the areas that are flood prone and provide this on (is there a missing word following the

parts of the county are most at risk for flooding, as well as other informational categories(please elaborate on or list the categories) (Howard County
Website). Moreover, the Howard County government has several restrictions and permit requirements that prevent or at least make it more difficult for
people to establish (build?) their private properties in flood prone areas. For instance, Howard County has restrictions that a resident's private property
has to be "within the County–regulated 100–year floodplain delineated for smaller drainage areas" (Howard County website). (check on the accuracy of
the previous quote) In addition, residents must consult with county officials prior to altering the exterior of their house in any way to ensure that the
project is in compliance with any floodplain restrictions (Anderson, Baltimore Sun). Finally, residents and their private properties can be better
protected from the financial risk of flooding if they acquire flood insurance, which is mandatory for certain high–risk areas (called Special Flood
Hazard Areas) and has to

The Formation of Major Weather Events Essay
For a tornado to form there must be a cold front, and low–level moisture. Tornadoes are associated with big and strong thunderstorms. A column of
warm and humid air will rise quickly. How it begins to rotate is not understood by scientists, but what they think is that two different winds with
different altitudes and speeds. This creates a wind shear. The column of air sometimes gets caught in a super cell updraft. The updraft will tighten and
speed up. When it begins to rain and hail, the precipitation will push down the column of air to create a tornado. Tornadoes mostly occur on the
southern half of the U.S. More thunderstorms take place which a necessity for a tornado to form. Normally they move from southwest to northeast. The

One popular idea is that small cloud particles have a positive charge, and then the other larger particles are negatively charged. The particles separate,
and the upper part of the cloud becomes positively charged, while the lower part becomes negatively charged. The positive and negative charges attract
each other and the charges will grow strong enough to overcome the air's resistance to electrical flow. Then the charges race toward each other, they
connect, and create an electrical circuit. Then it discharges the accumulated electricity as lightning. Lightning will most likely occur in the summer
time during a thunderstorm. As the lightning strikes, it travels downward toward the ground. Lightning is measured by how much electricity a bolt
of lightning will contain. What you should do during a lightning storm is try to stay indoors. Be sure to avoid water. Stay on low ground, and
avoid being in the open. Also, if you have any trees that touch your house, cut them because if the tree were to be struck, the electricity would go
through your home. Floods start when there has been a heavy rainfall, or it could be when there is a lot of snow when spring is arriving. They also
can be a result of a hurricane, tsunami, or a high tide in coastal areas. Floods will occur on flat land near banks, and rivers. It can also occur at the
base of a mountain. Floods mainly occur during the spring and hurricane season. This storm can

Analysis Of Trethewey's Photograph: Ice Storm
The weather, ever–changing and which humans are at the mercy of, plays a central role in Trethewey expressing instances of grief that are both
personal and collective in regards to black Americans. In part one of Native Guard, the poem "Photograph: Ice Storm, 1971" is set after a severe snow
storm falls upon the place where Trethewey lived in her youth. Much of the poem is structured by a contrast between the inside of a physical house and
the icy environment outside, as evident in stanza two and three: "the storm... drives us inside / for days, power lines down, food rotting / in the
refrigerator, while outside the landscape glistens beneath a glaze / of ice" (Trethewey 10). The imagery of the "power lines down" and "food rotting"
establish the home's interior as being an undesirable place to be, while in opposition, the exterior "glistens beneath a glaze of ice." Knowing the tragic
events that have occurred in Trethewey's life, the ice storm here serves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although different than the metaphorical graveyard of the Mississippi, the setting of the cemetery is similarly portrayed as a place of instability, as
evident through the imagery of "the landscape blurred and waving." The "weeds and grass" that have appeared around the gravesite adds to the
apparent sense of constant change. The boundaries between nature and the human subjects present in the poem become increasingly dissolved by the
fourth stanza: Trethewey tells of ants having "brought up soil [from the grave] of which [her mother] will be part" (Trethewey 43). Her mother,
despite being laid to rest in the ground and becoming "part" of it, is nevertheless being "brought up" to the poet's reality in a way makes it so that she
is unable to properly mourn her

What Is The Journey Of The Road Essay
After a short flight from Durban, we arrived in Port Elizabeth, where we were to start the drive through the Garden Route to Cape Town, I once again
reviewed our itinerary. The narratives I read about the Garden Route from our itinerary and other travel brochures, made my nomadic heart beat faster.
The Garden Route was incredible. It stretches for less than 300 km, yet the range of topography, vegetation, wildlife is remarkable: indigenous
temperature forest, pine plantations and 'fynbos' (thick bush), mountains running alongside rocky coves and beaches, gorges, rivers, lagoons and
mountain passes.

We stayed in Knysna for 3 nights and our hotel was nestled on the banks of a lagoon alright. While relaxing in the hotel patio, I saw colorful birds and
sea birds.
The following day, we ferried along the lagoon to the mouth of the open sea to Featherbed Nature Reserve for an eco–adventure tour. From the lagoon,
I saw the "Knysna Heads" two enormous sandstone cliffs that stand like sentries at the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon from the sea. While traveling by
a four–wheel drive to the top of the hill, our local guide talked about the flora and fauna, and the Blue Duiker, one of the smallest and most
endangered of the antelope, found in the area. Even though I did not see a Blue Duiker, I was not totally disappointed for when we reached the top of
the hill we were treated to a stunning view of the blue skies of South Africa reflected on the ever–flowing waters of the ocean. (picture)
I have always been fascinated by the power of water and its hold on the human heart and imagination. So, I joined our local guide on a two–kilometer
hike through the milk wood forests and onto the sandstone cliffs that feature arches, caves, cliffs and other wonders. It was absolutely amazing. Two
days later, we said goodbye to Knysna and continued to a scenic drive that took us along the Outeniqua Pass, deep gorges and ravines, and misty
mountains.

Physical And Human Elements Of Coastal Zone Environment
Describe the interaction of physical and human elements of coastal zone environment and discuss the different strategic response of individuals,
groups and government bodies to the issue of coastal management. The interaction between the physical and human elements of the coastal
environment has had a considerable effect on the various coastal zones in Australia and specific strategic events responses of individuals, groups
and governments. Australia has over 37 000 kilometres of coastline, 11 000 beaches and thousands of coastal landforms. Approximately 85% of
Australia's population live within 50 km of the coast. The coast is where the ocean meets the land and the coastal zone comprises of many different
environments including rivers, bays, wetlands, beaches, coral reefs, estuaries and the continental shelf. Due to rapid urbanisation and development
and other human and physical processes such as erosion Australia's coastline, especially over the last 200 years, has been greatly disrupted.
Individuals, groups and government bodies need to manage these issues in order to achieve a sustainable and equitable management strategies within
our coastal zone. One of the dominant physical elements that has major effects on Australian coastline is the issue of erosion. Erosion is defined as
the wearing away of physical rock by wind and water Many coastal landforms such as cliffs, platforms, headland, caves, blowholes and stacks are
formed by the process of erosion. It is the key

Evaluation Of Water Related Climate Change Adaptation...
The aim of this research is to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluation of water–related climate change adaptation interventions at the
local community level in Thai Binh province. This will help authorities at high levels, NGO officers, local residents and other beneficiaries as they can
evaluate the "effectiveness" of water–related interventions. The robust indicators will help to adjust the adaptation targets for given times, to ensure the
accountability to stakeholders, to provide evidence for the effects of intervention, to motivate all partners, to fundraise, and to reveal the shortcomings
in the implementation of water–related adaptation interventions {Hobson, 2014 #328}.
This research will apply the sustainable livelihood framework and the local community participation to develop the indicators. The sustainable
livelihood framework approach will consider comprehensively and scientifically the livelihood components of local residents. The authorities at the
higher levels, therefore, can more easily listen to and understand the local voices and have much more respect and corporation with the local residents.
In addition, the local community participation methods will reveal the local residents' perspectives of their needs, priorities and visions. The local
residents will also be able to understand the effects of adaptation interventions, to gain the skills in observation of changes and to improve their
adaptive capacity to adverse impacts of climate

History Of The Catatumbo Lightning
People say that lightning doesn't strike the same place twice. Well, it's practically untrue since there is a place on earth that seems to be like a
lightning rod that lures in all the lightning in one place. In Venezuela, there is a particular spot on a lake that attracts a whopping 1.2 million lightning
strikes a year. It's hard to believe but it's about 28 lightning bolts every minute. This amount of energy is enough to power more or less a hundred
million light bulbs!
This spectacular phenomenon is called the "Catatumbo Lightning". Originating from a mass of storm clouds at a height of more than 1 kilometer
above, lightning, strikes on this specific spot, typically over a bog area where Catatumbo River empties into Lake Maracaibo in the ... Show more

There is one instance that lightning strikes ceased to occur from January to March 2010 that temporarily raised fears of the phenomenon being
extinguished permanently but was later found out that it was drought that caused it. Humidity in a sense may have played a vital role in the occurrence
but scientists lately say that maybe it's the region's wind patterns and unique topography that contribute to the special phenomenon. They say that when
warm winds, trapped by the surrounding mountains in Lake Maracaibo, collides with cool air coming down from the Andes mountains, they are forced
to condense, thus creating thunderclouds.
"A lot of the (lightning) hot spots are tied to features in the terrain – slopes of mountain ranges, curved coastlines, combinations of those," Dr Daniel
Cecil from the Global Hydrology and Climate Centre's lightning team told the BBC.
"Having irregularities like that in the terrain can help generate wind patterns and heating or cooling patterns that would boost the likelihood of
thunderstorms."
Considering the incredible amount of lightning strikes, one may wonder if those are some kind of extra special lightning of sort but according to
studies, those lightning bolts is the same with every kind of lightning that flashes all around the

Creative Writing: Boosey's Journey
The early morning sunrise caught the train yard in the
busiest time of the day as it peeked thru what was left of the
night sky.
Trains were being hooked and unhooked while others were making
their runs around the yard getting ready for long hauls.
Boosey, the little red caboose, didn't like being a caboose,
mostly because he couldn't see where he was going. He could only
see where he had been and that wasn't fun for him.
"How wonderful it must be to lead the train," Boosey whispered
to himself as an engine roared by pulling a few cars.
A few days later, Boosey and a few cars were talking and
Boosey shared his dream of how he hoped to be able to lead a train

"Here he is!" Bob called to one of the other crewmen. "Call for
an engine!"
As soon as the engine arrived, Boosey was being hooked up, he
realized where he was. These were the tracks that
were broken only a few feet from where he had stopped. Had he
went just a few more feet, he would have fallen into the raging
river.
Boosey shook off the thought when he felt the tug of
the engine starting to pull him home.
Upon entering the yard, the big blue engine was the first to
greet Boosey and he was also the first to say he was sorry for
making fun of something he wanted to do.
All the other cars made it a point to see Boosey so they too
could say they were sorry and that made Boosey so happy.
And to fulfill Boosey's wish, the big blue engine often let
Boosey lead the train while hooking up cars in the yard.
Boosey never again left the yard without being hooked up to a
train and he had learned that running away didn't help his
problem, but he did know that if he ever had a problem again

As you may know, a estuary, particularly is a enclosed body of water aside the coast where freshwater from rivers and streams intertwine with the
salt water from the ocean. As a matter of fact, estuaries are "places of transition from land to sea and freshwater to salt water." An estuary is a
partially enclosed body of water formed where freshwater from rivers and streams flows into the ocean, mixing with the salty sea water. Estuaries
and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea, and from fresh to salt water. Influenced by the tides, estuaries are protected
and kept safe from the "full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary

In areas where the mouth of fresh water rivers run into the estuary, the salinity can be as low as .5 ppt (parts per thousand), and in this region
freshwater organisms can live. Near the mouth of the bay, the salinity level can be as high as 36 ppt, which is as salty as the ocean. Since this estuary
is located in a temperate zone, the average daily temperature of the water changes with the seasons. More than 350 species of fish live in the
Chesapeake bay, this bay provides rich fishing opportunities for fisherman. This Bay supports more than 3,600 species of plant and animal life
altogether. Now picture, how much this number drastically increases if you include the enitre worlds plant and animal life.
Furthermore, estuaries are generally influenced by the tides, yet still remain protected from the powerful ocean waves, winds, and storms that the land
forms as barrier islands or peninsulas. In fact, one of the most productive on earth are estuarian environments that create more organic matter each
year than comparable areas of forest, grassland, or agricultural land. The tidal waters of estuaries also support unique communities of plants and
animals especially adapted for life at the margin of the sea. A numerous of different habitat spieces are found living in estuaries, including rocky

Causes Of Thunderstorms
THUNDERSTORMS–Mother Natures unhealthiest weather condition!
How Thunderstorms affects the human body
A thunderstorm is only considered a thunderstorm when lightning is present.
These storms can play an important role in physical pain and mental suffering.
Lightning is made from cold air and warm air inside a cloud that meets. The warm air has water droplets that goes to the top of the cloud and the cold
air has ice crystals goes to the bottom of the cloud. When a storm forms the droplets and crystals hit each other and it separates the air and the two parts
hitting each other makes a static electrical charge in the cloud and forms a lightning bolt.
Thunder; one following the other. Thunder is air pressure that expands and contracts quickly in a cloud by lightning. When the air gets heated it makes
the sound of thunder.

The Levels Of The Somerset Levels Flooded
During the Autumn/Winter of 2013/14, an unusually high frequency of depressions moved across the Somerset Levels, causing both fluvial and
pluvial flooding on a prodigious scale. The two main rivers which flow through the Levels (River Tone/Parrett), burst their banks, spilling into the
already heavily saturated flood plain. An emergency was declared and subsequently allowed the Somerset council to request financial and physical
aid to the region. This essay highlights the key reasons the Somerset Levels flooded, as well evaluating the main management solutions that were
put forward during the peak of the flooding. The Somerset levels expand 170,000 acres across parts of the north and centre of the county (BBC
News, 2014). The majority of the soil consists of clay and further inland, peat. As the Levels sit, on average, just three metres above sea level, it's
also prone to coastal flooding. Every year the area experiences some form of flooding due to its impermeable calcareous clays, which drains water
very slowly (Soilscapes, n.d.). The Autumn/Winter period saw a record–breaking Jet Stream, fuelled by a diving cold Polar Vortex across the US. With
this, brought powerful storms across the UK, which produced rapid cyclogenesis in the mid–Atlantic (MetOffice, 2014). This pattern lasted several
months, exacerbating the flooding issues across the Somerset Levels. Not only was the flooding caused by natural circumstances, manmade ingenuity
also played a significant role;

Hazards affecting Watertown
Category of Hazards Type of Hazards Ranking
Atmospheric Extreme Temperatures, winter storms, tornadoes 1
Hydrologic Flooding, droughts 2
Geologic Earthquake, landslides 3
Extreme Temperatures
Extreme cold will result in freezing rivers and ice jams. When these thaw out it will result in flooding. No matter where the freezing takes place, the
after effect will always cause flooding which will have adverse effects on crops and vegetation. Extreme cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia.
Strong winds along with extreme cold makes the conditions feel a lot worst. The high winds take away bod heat, making the body feel cold a lot
faster. According to the New York State Climate Office, extreme cold events in New York State occur regularly and are most common between October
and March. The northern states are the areas that are most susceptible to extreme temperatures. This is an acceptable risk. Despite the cold
temperatures, you still have many people that venture into the cold to fight the freezing conditions.

taken its simple personality and turned into not only a work of art, but an architectural craft. Therefore, Emerson's personification in this poem is quite
evident from beginning to end. Emerson starts out the poem with a sort of theme for the storm and uses personification and imagery to advocate that
theme. In the first stanza, Emerson creates the image of a royal and important storm coming to share its beauty and to be recognized. However, as the
poem continues the reader is able to see the sudden shift in Emerson's theme. In the second stanza the theme of personification turns into craftsman,
inventor, and masonry. Emersons shift allows for a more adaptable and relatable being in the storm. The storms wake of beauty turns into a
hardworking craft. Simply stated, Emerson has made an ever changing being out of a snow–storm. From royal to loyal, this storm has shown its true
abilities both personified and

When you travel out of state, for business or pleasure, there is usually one person that asks the question, 'Do you own cows?' Most people from other States believe that Texas is flat pasture land where everyone owns cattle or has an oil derrick in their backyard. Texas' large land mass is not all flat. Far West Texas or The Trans –Pecos Region is the most unique portion with the presence of the Eastern portion of the Rocky Mountains that form the Rocky Mountain Cordillera. Normally in Texas the temperatures usually don't fluctuate that much. It's normally colder north and warmer in the south, as well as, wetter in the east than the west. However, we will explore the weather and climate of Texas' past. We will start in the decade of 1940's and move to 50's and 60's, and discover the routes of past hurricanes, along with the rainfall and temperatures of the Upper Coast, South Central Texas and the Edwards Plateau (Nielsen–Gammon). The Forty's begins with so much rain, the state records 40 inches or more making it the wettest across the state. Six hurricanes are recorded in the 1940's. September 23rd, 1941 a hurricane hit at Matagorda Bay, traveled through Houston taking four lives and causing six million dollars in damages. The early warnings is what helped save many lives. August 30, 1942 one skirted the coast with 100 mile an hour winds which traveled up to the Edwards Plateau causing 26 million dollars in crop damage. We aren't done yet, a tropicalstorm came ashore the Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Bay leaving behind One million dollars in damages. The year 1943 has more destruction from a hurricane on July 27th. • 3. Hurricane Matthew Hurricanes form over warm, tropical oceans and are very powerful storms. These type of storms are actually the most violent on the Earth. For example, of these powerful and destructive storms was Hurricane Matthew. Hurricane Matthew occurred from September 28th through October 9th, 2016, and affected the Caribbean and Southeast U.S. Hurricanes, being the powerful and violent storms they are, can cause lots of destruction to cities, states, and /or countries. To begin with, there are many causes of hurricanes. Hurricanes are created by thunderstorms gathering together in a spinning circle (Aboff & Sotirovski, 2012). Furthermore, hurricanes need many ingredients in order to form, such as warm, tropical ocean water and wind. For instance, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final stage in the development of a hurricane is known as the cyclone or the hurricane step. The cyclone's winds are now more powerful than ever before in its earlier stages, at 74 mph and above. The hurricane has also grown in the sense of height and width, now being around 50,000 feet high, and 125 miles across. In addition to these lengths, the hurricane's eye is in the range of five and 30 miles wide. When the hurricane reaches land, it will weaken because it does not have the necessary ingredients to continue to grow and survive (SciJinks, 2016). For instance, one of these very powerful and destructive storms formed on September 28th, 2016 near the Windward Islands. Hurricane Matthew left a path of destruction from the Caribbean to the southeast of the United States of America. Matthew was formed when a tropical wave was pushed off of the coast of Africa. After going through the first three stages, the storm known as Matthew developed into a tropical storm, in which it received a name. Eventually, Tropical Storm Matthew reached the eastern Caribbean, where it became a hurricane, adjusting its name to Hurricane Matthew. • 4. Texas Tornado Research Paper On March 28, 2000, our city of Fort Worth was hit by an F3 tornado. After hearing about tornados on the news year after year, I decided to write on the tornado that hit Fort Worth because it happened when I was a kid and I can recall how the buildings looked like for a while after the storm and how the downtown area has evolved over the years after the tornado. I also find it to be interesting in finding out why we are hit so often. Texas is one of the hardest states hit by tornados. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are on average 155 tornados in Texas per year since 1991–2010. This is an impressive number compared to other states. Texas, is known to be in what is popularly known as tornado alley. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At 6:15 p.m., a devastating tornado hit the downtown area of Fort Worth, Arlington, and Grand Prairie areas. The tornado that struck downtown Fort Worth was an F2 tornado on the Fujita scale, but an F3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The thunderstorms that the tornado arose from brought flash floods, strong winds, and hail. The tornado funnel developed directly over the city, descended, and stayed on the ground for at least 15 min (Brewster, 2004). The path of the tornado was recorded and after examining the damage it was determined the tornado began its damage in the municipality of River Oaks where damage had been done to homes and Castleberry High School. The tornado continued its path crossing the Trinity River where it then took a turn at the intersection of West 6th street and University Dr. It then took on a eastern direction damaging more homes. The tornado continued its path toward downtown leaving destruction to the Cash America building, the Bank One tower, Calvary Cathedral and many other buildings. The tornado finally dissipated when it hit I–35, but its parent cell continued to cause damage to homes, trees, and fences (Wikipedia.org). Another thunderstorm system began to arise in Johnson county and made its way northeast ward to meet up with the parent cell from the Fort Worth tornado, this produced a second tornado that hit Arlington and Grand Prairie. University Of New South Wales University of New South Wales CVEN9611 –Urban Hydraulic Structures Assignment Stefan Felder Submitted by: Garth Cooper Student Number – z3189074 Question 1 Toowoomba City is located 125km from Brisbane in Queensland on the Western side of the Great Dividing Range. It consists of two main creek catchments, east creek and west creek catchments. In January 2011 there was a main flooding event which caused a large flood event that is described as an "Inland Tsunami". Figure 1 – Catchment map of Toowoomba identifying major hydraulic features. Source [1] The factors that contributed to the major storm was: There was an initial rainfall even of 90mm which occurred over 24 hours before which caused the catchments to be fully saturated. As a result any major rainfall events would be converted directly into surface water runoff Most of the catchments depicted in Figure 1 where fully urbanised which caused surfaces in the catchment to be impervious; that is very little runoff would infiltrate into the ground There were intense rainfall events that occurred over the Gowrie creek catchment; with an event greater than a 100 year ARI storm experienced at the rainfall gauges Due to the large intensities of rainfalls caused both East and West creeks to fill up. Due to both creeks flowing in the same direction no drainage could occur to Gworiee creek causing inundation shown in Appendix Figure 2 – Recorded Maximum rainfall intensities and Serveries in Toowoomba, 10 ... • 6. Detached from Hurricane Ike The world's attention was focused on the devastating events of Hurricane Ike and the turmoil left in its wake. 300 miles north of the storm's epicentre, a little girl of 7 years appeared fascinated by the commotion surrounding her. She pressed her face up against the window of her father's car, gazing out with intensity. All the neighbourhood shops had transformed into amateur forts overnight with sandbags blocking the doors, windows boarded, and ugly signs saying "Closed for Ike". The sky was purple, the dark clouds churned with discontent. She frowned in annoyance, her favourite restaurant barricaded and abandoned. The Pizza Palace only mirrored the rest of Houston but the girl started to feel afraid. She pulled back from the window and subconsciously started to chew the ends of her long blonde hair whilst her expression changed in thought. Her teachers, who often claimed she was quiet and maybe too thoughtful, would have easily recognised the look. All that was on the radio was news about the coming storm. The weatherman sounded scared. "The sudden change in Hurricane Ike's direction has caught everyone off guard and the storm is heading directly towards Houston, all residents are advised to take shelter as there is no time for evacuation. Ike is gaining strength from the Gulf and is predicted to hit Houston as a category 3 hurricane." The girl's father was quickly tried to reassure her but she could tell he was nervous as the car sped up. A few minutes later the car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Descriptive Essay On A Rainy Season Cumulus clouds gather in the east and stand towering like pillars from a mythological age. Crashing together, the friction causes the huge clouds to glow eerily from the inside out. They quickly grew angrier, launching their bolts of lightning toward earth. The air becomes thick with humidity and the wind starts to blow. The ground trembles from the claps of thunder that echo past and reverberate back off of the mountains; it's a deafening roar. Here in the Southwestern United States in late summer; the days are brutally long, scorching hot, and the ground is cracked and dry. This is the monsoon season. On a hot day, cooling off by the lake is what I like to do. It seems as though everyone else has the same idea. The boaters are out in full force skimming along the water in their crafts. Families are camped by the water's edge under tarps for shade. They mindfully watch their little ones play and splash in the water. As the day wears on, the boaters leisurely find their way back to the launch ramps. The families round up the kids, pack up their gear and head back to the homestead. Everything was calm and tranquil, and the only sounds were the gentle waves breaking on the shore. Then a flash of light catches my eye, I turn to look and I see a monster approaching. Moments later, everything went silent and still. The birds are no longer singing their joyful song. The lake became wave less and serene. I could feel the pressure of the atmosphere weighing down on me like a heavy burden. This is what is called the calm before the storm. Like a whisper the wind gently blew across my face and rustled my hair filling it with static electricity. Then the wind started its fury–the hot blowing sand stung as it hit my skin. It burned my eyes and filled my nose. I could taste the grit in my mouth. The trees bent over without mercy and whiplashed back the other way. The lake turned a dark electric green and the waves rolled violently with caps of white. And not too far off in the distance, cells of rain kicked up the dust and made steam rise as the speeding rain reached the parched ground. The sky grew black as the imposing clouds illuminated a glowing white. They were filled with flashes of light that danced erratically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Hydroclimate of the Northwest of the United States Essay Although runoff and streamflow have generally decreased in the Northwest over the past century (Luce and Holden, 2009), instances of flooding – particularly in rain–dominated and 'transition' basins – have increased over the same period (Hamlet and Lettenmaier, 2007), and are often driven by exceptional precipitation events. Impacts are basin specific and dependent on antecedent conditions, though higher intensity storms generally result in increased flooding and runoff risk, and such events can disrupt systems ranging from ecological (e.g. Knapp et al., 2008), to agricultural (e.g. Rosenzweig et al., 2000), to urban (e.g. Rosenberg et al., 2010). Further, the synchronicity of precipitation across a basin or region has the potential to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gershunov and Barnett, 1998). ii. The Inland Northwest The region to the east of the Cascades is typified by generally sunnier and drier conditions as compared to the PNW. Annual average precipitation across the Inland Northwest (INW) is less than 50cm, with a greater percentage of that precipitation coming during the late spring and early summer months. Lower average annual precipitation amounts exist even within the higher elevation mountainous areas of northern Idaho, northeastern Oregon, and western Montana, with annual averages of only 150–250cm as compared to the 200–500cm MAP in the mountain ranges west of the Cascade crest (CESE, UW). The sub–regional variability of MAP within the INW exists primarily as a result of orographic effects (is this correct???). B. Extreme precipitation events in the Northwest i. Defining 'extreme' The definition of 'extreme' can vary across studies. In some studies (e.g. Karl et al., 1995), if a fixed threshold value is exceeded an event is considered extreme. However, this method for defining extreme events is not suitable for a region like the Northwest with large spatial variability in rainfall amounts. A preferable method is to define an extreme event at point i as one in which the precipitation total for the event falls within the xth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Causes Of Climate Change Climate change is described as a phenomenon in which the regularity of the climate undergoes temperal or precipatation changes. Climate itself is the constant long term weather pattern of a particular region. Each region has it's own variations of climate, of which there are 5 groupings, and each climate dictates the regions vegetation, species type, soil fertility, and even population locations. First and foremost, one cannot examine the evidence and result of climate change without first discussing the greenhouse effect, a natural warming of the earth and it's recent increase which has exacerbated the issue of climate change. The greenhouse effect is a process in which certain gases within the atmospere trap some of the sun's solar radiation projected down to Earth. This process composed of the gases, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and even water vapor, is essential as it allows the Earth to regulate a regular warm temperature and thereby allow liquid water to reside on the surface (Reichard, 2014). These greenhouse gases, a normal part of Earths biosphere, can be released through natural process like from a Volcanic eruption or the decaying of vegetation. Scientist have however, proven that human contribution has greatly added to the levels within the atmosphere which coincide with the highened global warming of the planet, future predictions of drastic climate change, and the current atypical occurrances of natural hazards. • 11. Hurricane Emily Research Paper Hurricane Emily Hurricane Emily was a powerful tropical cyclone that wreaked havoc across the Caribbean Sea to Mexico. It broke the record for being the strongest hurricane formed, just days after Hurricane Dennis had done so. The storm formed on July 10th, 2005 in the centre of the Atlantic Ocean. It then passed over the Windward Islands on the 14th, before traveling west–northwest and slowly intensified over the Caribbean until it hit its peak as a Category 5 hurricane on July 16th. This made it the first category 5 hurricane of the year. Thestorm travelled over the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 4, and Emily hit the Gulf of Mexico and Tamaupullas in the next few days. On July 20th, the storm dissipated within 24 hours. The scientific name for this type of storm is a 'tropical cyclone'; however, when formed over the Atlantic Ocean or the Eastern Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. Hurricanes are formed in intense low pressure areas in these oceans. The fuel of a hurricane is water vapour from the surface of the ocean. This water vapour condenses to form clouds and rain which, in turn, warms the surrounding air. When there is little wind shear over the ocean (this is what usually takes the heat away), the heat will build up and cause pressure to form. This causes wind to spiral in on ... • 12. One Mile Of Ice Analysis One Mile of Imagery To place a reader in the mind of a character, the author must create a scenario which will appeal to the senses, and keep readers intrigued. The technique of building imagery can successfully transform the world around the reader, and connect them to the story. One Mile of Ice by Hugh Garner uses many imagery–building techniques to place readers in the mind of a man on the verge of death. In this story, Hugh Garner tells the tale of two brother–in–laws, Ralph and Pete, who venture off into town, accompanied by mare and sleigh, to get presents for the children for Christmas. However, their journey takes a very dark turn not too far into their adventure. The crisp winds become a blinding storm, in which Ralph and Pete are forced to fight for their lives. Unfortunately, only one man survives – Pete. One Mile of Ice uses visual components to build imagery, as well as tactile techniques to throw readers into the mind of the protagonist. Alongside this, the author uses auditory traits to reproduce the true terror experienced in this story by these brother–in–laws. Visual imagery is often the first step to subconsciously sending the reader into a parallel state of mind as the protagonist, and letting them experience what the characters experienced throughout the story. The visuals used in the beginning of this story convince readers that they have been placed in a safe, secure environment, therefore having a positive effect on readers when they ... • 15. What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Human Greed Human greed's and Weaknesses Human Activities 1)Natural Defences Plants and geologic features make up an ever–present natural defines against flooding. Grasses, shrubs and trees help keep healthy topsoil in place to absorb excess rainfall, and extensive root systems can absorb some excess water before it overwhelms a region. Naturally occurring waterways, flood plains and wetlands all serve as safety valves for floods, drawing high waters away and dispersing them safely. Unfortunately, human activities can disrupt both of these systems, increasing the likelihood and severity of floods. 2)Agriculture and Deforestation Large–scale agricultural operations can deplete topsoil, reducing the amount of nutrients present and degrading its quality. This can lead to a weakening of the surrounding plant life, reducing its ability to protect against floods. Similarly, deforestation can remove the anchors keeping rich soil in place, allowing it to wash away and leaving dry, dusty soil in its place –– ill–suited to absorbing heavy rainfall. This increases the amount of water that washes into rivers and streams, adding to the volume that passes through the water system and causing floods. 3)Human Development Rural and urban ... • 17. The Great Depression Of The United States And Canadian... Summary As the Great Depression continued to tighten its grip on America, nature turned against many already suffering Americans. The Dusty Bowl, also know as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damages the ecology and agricultural production of the United States and Canadian plains. Many farmers and ranchers were driven to the Great Plains by the American sense of expansion. The land they inhabited was used primarily for ranching till advances in agricultural mechanization and high grain prices caused by World War I, made agriculture more productive as ever; thus causing farmers to exploit the land in their attempt to make a large profit, setting up the region for an environmental catastrophe. As a result of over farming, a failure to implement dryland farming techniques–which would have prevented topsoil wind erosion–and a severe drought, 150,000 square miles of land in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, faced havoc not previously seen in American history. The first "black blizzard" occurred in 1931, and they occurred till conservation efforts in the 1940s, but the damage had been done, reflected on the upturned land and record heat, as well as the unleashed swarm of locust and jackrabbits, causing terror in children and adults alike. Consequently, massive amounts of people migrated from the plains fleeing the storms, and those who stayed faced the harmful effects from the inhalation of dust particles. Setting The Great ... The particles separate, and the upper part of the cloud becomes positively charged, while the lower part becomes negatively charged. The positive and negative charges attract each other and the charges will grow strong enough to overcome the air's resistance to electrical flow. Then the charges race toward each other, they connect, and create an electrical circuit. Then it discharges the accumulated electricity as lightning. Lightning will most likely occur in the summer time during a thunderstorm. As the lightning strikes, it travels downward toward the ground. Lightning is measured by how much electricity a bolt of lightning will contain. What you should do during a lightning storm is try to stay indoors. Be sure to avoid water. Analysis Of Trethewey's Photograph: Ice Storm The weather, ever–changing and which humans are at the mercy of, plays a central role in Trethewey expressing instances of grief that are both personal and collective in regards to black Americans. Even though I did not see a Blue Duiker, I was not totally disappointed for when we reached the top of the hill we were treated to a stunning view of the blue skies of South Africa reflected on the ever–flowing waters of the ocean. (picture) I have always been fascinated by the power of water and its hold on the human heart and imagination. So, I joined our local guide on a two–kilometer hike through the milk wood forests and onto the sandstone cliffs that feature arches, caves, cliffs and other wonders. It was absolutely amazing. Two days later, we said goodbye to Knysna and continued to a scenic drive that took us along the Outeniqua Pass, deep gorges and ravines, and misty mountains. The scenery turned a little less dramatic and arid as we neared Oudtshoorn, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Physical And Human Elements Of Coastal Zone Environment Describe the interaction of physical and human elements of coastal zone environment and discuss the different strategic response of individuals, groups and government bodies to the issue of coastal management. The interaction between the physical and human elements of the coastal environment has had a considerable effect on the various coastal zones in Australia and specific strategic events responses of individuals, groups and governments. Australia has over 37 000 kilometres of coastline, 11 000 beaches and thousands of coastal landforms. Approximately 85% of Australia's population live within 50 km of the coast. The coast is where the ocean meets the land and the coastal zone comprises of many different environments including rivers, bays, wetlands, beaches, coral reefs, estuaries and the continental shelf. Due to rapid urbanisation and development and other human and physical processes such as erosion Australia's coastline, especially over the last 200 years, has been greatly disrupted. Individuals, groups and government bodies need to manage these issues in order to achieve a sustainable and equitable management strategies within our coastal zone. One of the dominant physical elements that has major effects on Australian coastline is the issue of erosion. Erosion is defined as the wearing away of physical rock by wind and water Many coastal landforms such as cliffs, platforms, headland, caves, blowholes and stacks are formed by the process of erosion. • 29. Evaluation Of Water Related Climate Change Adaptation... The aim of this research is to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluation of water–related climate change adaptation interventions at the local community level in Thai Binh province. This will help authorities at high levels, NGO officers, local residents and other beneficiaries as they can evaluate the "effectiveness" of water–related interventions. The robust indicators will help to adjust the adaptation targets for given times, to ensure the accountability to stakeholders, to provide evidence for the effects of intervention, to motivate all partners, to fundraise, and to reveal the shortcomings in the implementation of water–related adaptation interventions {Hobson, 2014 #328}. This research will apply the sustainable livelihood framework and the local community participation to develop the indicators. The sustainable livelihood framework approach will consider comprehensively and scientifically the livelihood components of local residents. The authorities at the higher levels, therefore, can more easily listen to and understand the local voices and have much more respect and corporation with the local residents. In addition, the local community participation methods will reveal the local residents' perspectives of their needs, priorities and visions. The local residents will also be able to understand the effects of adaptation interventions, to gain the skills in observation of changes and to improve their adaptive capacity to adverse impacts of climate ... At this point in the Gospel of Mark we have followed Jesus in other miracles such as healing Peter's mother–in–law, healing a man with an unclean spirit, and cleansing a man of leprosy along with other miracles. August 28th 2005, Louisiana and Mississippi were affected by hurricane Katrina. 80 percent of New Orleans along with parishes close by were flooded not receding back for weeks. Evacuation was necessary for the people of New Orleans. The superdome and convention center were filled as shelter for the residents. • 31. History Of The Catatumbo Lightning People say that lightning doesn't strike the same place twice. Well, it's practically untrue since there is a place on earth that seems to be like a lightning rod that lures in all the lightning in one place. In Venezuela, there is a particular spot on a lake that attracts a whopping 1.2 million lightning strikes a year. It's hard to believe but it's about 28 lightning bolts every minute. This amount of energy is enough to power more or less a hundred million light bulbs! This spectacular phenomenon is called the "Catatumbo Lightning". Originating from a mass of storm clouds at a height of more than 1 kilometer above, lightning, strikes on this specific spot, typically over a bog area where Catatumbo River empties into Lake Maracaibo in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is one instance that lightning strikes ceased to occur from January to March 2010 that temporarily raised fears of the phenomenon being extinguished permanently but was later found out that it was drought that caused it. Humidity in a sense may have played a vital role in the occurrence but scientists lately say that maybe it's the region's wind patterns and unique topography that contribute to the special phenomenon. They say that when warm winds, trapped by the surrounding mountains in Lake Maracaibo, collides with cool air coming down from the Andes mountains, they are forced to condense, thus creating thunderclouds. "A lot of the (lightning) hot spots are tied to features in the terrain – slopes of mountain ranges, curved coastlines, combinations of those," Dr Daniel Cecil from the Global Hydrology and Climate Centre's lightning team told the BBC. "Having irregularities like that in the terrain can help generate wind patterns and heating or cooling patterns that would boost the likelihood of thunderstorms." Considering the incredible amount of lightning strikes, one may wonder if those are some kind of extra special lightning of sort but according to studies, those lightning bolts is the same with every kind of lightning that flashes all around the ... Trains were being hooked and unhooked while others were making their runs around the yard getting ready for long hauls. Boosey, the little red caboose, didn't like being a caboose, mostly because he couldn't see where he was going. He could only see where he had been and that wasn't fun for him. "How wonderful it must be to lead the train," Boosey whispered to himself as an engine roared by pulling a few cars. A few days later, Boosey and a few cars were talking and Boosey shared his dream of how he hoped to be able to lead a train someday. These were the tracks that were broken only a few feet from where he had stopped. Had he went just a few more feet, he would have fallen into the raging river. Boosey shook off the thought when he felt the tug of the engine starting to pull him home. Upon entering the yard, the big blue engine was the first to greet Boosey and he was also the first to say he was sorry for making fun of something he wanted to do. All the other cars made it a point to see Boosey so they too could say they were sorry and that made Boosey so happy.

The warm air has water droplets that goes to the top of the cloud and the cold air has ice crystals goes to the bottom of the cloud. When a storm forms the droplets and crystals hit each other and it separates the air and the two parts hitting each other makes a static electrical charge in the cloud and forms a lightning bolt. • 39. The Levels Of The Somerset Levels Flooded During the Autumn/Winter of 2013/14, an unusually high frequency of depressions moved across the Somerset Levels, causing both fluvial and pluvial flooding on a prodigious scale. The two main rivers which flow through the Levels (River Tone/Parrett), burst their banks, spilling into the already heavily saturated flood plain. An emergency was declared and subsequently allowed the Somerset council to request financial and physical aid to the region. This essay highlights the key reasons the Somerset Levels flooded, as well evaluating the main management solutions that were put forward during the peak of the flooding. The Somerset levels expand 170,000 acres across parts of the north and centre of the county (BBC News, 2014). The majority of the soil consists of clay and further inland, peat. As the Levels sit, on average, just three metres above sea level, it's also prone to coastal flooding. Every year the area experiences some form of flooding due to its impermeable calcareous clays, which drains water very slowly (Soilscapes, n.d.). The Autumn/Winter period saw a record–breaking Jet Stream, fuelled by a diving cold Polar Vortex across the US. With this, brought powerful storms across the UK, which produced rapid cyclogenesis in the mid–Atlantic (MetOffice, 2014). This pattern lasted several months, exacerbating the flooding issues across the Somerset Levels. The snow–storm has taken on the personality of a craftsman, inventor, architect, and farmer. The snowstorm has taken its simple personality and turned into not only a work of art, but an architectural craft. Therefore, Emerson's personification in this poem is quite evident from beginning to end. Emerson starts out the poem with a sort of theme for the storm and uses personification and imagery to advocate that theme. In the first stanza, Emerson creates the image of a royal and important storm coming to share its beauty and to be recognized. However, as the poem continues the reader is able to see the sudden shift in Emerson's theme. In the second stanza the theme of personification turns into craftsman, inventor, and masonry.
