Example Of A Media Fan
A media Fan is seen as a subject that is trivialized and dismissed and so this essay will investigate
how a fan is a 'complex and contradictory arena for critical enquiry' A fan is depicted to be obsessed,
lonely and false worshippers but fans can be more than that as they can be active producers that
develop their own meanings from the media. This essay will discuss how fans are seen as
destructive and deviant as well as how they can be useful textual poachers who construct their own
culture from materials. Relevant examples will be included as evidence. A fan is abbreviated from
the word fanatic which means someone who is overly obsessed with a specific celebrity (Jenkins,
1992:12). A fan is normally someone who has an interest in a celebrity and sees them as an icon and
someone they can identify with due to Jenkins (1992:13). Fans are seen as less important and are

This is good for the media as people are discussing media texts bringing in interest from viewers
and new meanings are analysed (Jonathan et al, 2007:9). Due to Jonathan et al (2007:9) media fans
have gone into activities and practices that bring worth to the media for example editing, writing
campaigns and blogs. Textual poachers create a community within society that people can relate to
as fans will share the same feelings about a specific show and this brings them together (Jonathan et
al, 2007:10). An example is the Beauty and the Beast as fans construct their own meanings from the
film and they collectively discuss the outcome of the story and they construct a critical analysis of
the story (Jenkins, 1992:34). These fans have common ideological beliefs and they share interests
with each other and so this states that fans are seen as active producers and skilled manipulators of
the media due to Jenkins

Harry Potter Fan Activism
The youth spend a majority of their time on the Internet or social media, rather than being active
participants in their community. Studies of fan communities have increased over the past few years,
as being a fan has become more digitized. There has been a focus on the Internet as a place of
communal activity for participants. Fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, and so on, are
generally a part of a larger "fandom" that is regarded collectively as a community or subculture.
However, we are seeing the younger generations move towards new forms of civic and political
engagement – ones that are closely tied to their personal interests and social network. For example,
the Harry Potter Alliance is an organization that is primarily run by Harry Potter fans. Since the
founding of the organization, campaigns have been created that focus on topics such as literacy,
United States immigration reform, economic justice, gay rights, sexism, labor rights, mental health,
body image, and climate change (Weiss, 2012). I chose this particular organization, not only because
of my self–interest, but also because they have received recognition from many popular figures
within the Harry Potter community. I will focus in on their website content and campaigns to
analyze their activism. The Harry Potter Alliance is an exemplary form of fan activism as ... Show

He had coined the term to define cultural protests. Jenkins identifies a significant shift that has
occurred with the emergence of fan activism in which there is a change in the position of cultural
consumers. The shift occurs when passive consumers become active producers (Jenkins, 1992).
What this indicates is that many people are moving away from simply consuming the product or
buying merchandise to producing it through fan art, fan fiction, video making, and composing
music. These forms of admiration speak to the special interests of a fan

The History of Fandoms
To provide a picture of so–called passive or casual fans, I illustrated a fan huddled in her comforters
while browsing fanworks. There are floating screenshots of the Tumblr, Archive of Our Own, and
Fanfiction.Net homepages in the background, since these websites are three of the most visited
fanwork archives.
In relation to the second rule, the third rule on the seventh page says, "You don't have to be like
everybody else." I started the passage with the statement, "Being in a group is not the same as losing
your identity." It is natural for fans to conform to their fandoms' preferences from the moment they
join. When I began writing fanfiction, my writing style drastically changed to mimic those of other
writers who had far wider readership than I did. Surprisingly, a writer who was relatively new to the
fandom for a series I wrote for based her own fanfiction off of mine. The case is similar to those of
fans who draw fanart, edit images, and produce animated pictures commonly called GIFs. It is
difficult to distinguish between fans' styles due to the lack of uniqueness. The third rule targets the
fans who do not believe that their own styles are worth looking at, in comparison with other fans'
styles.
The picture of a fan carrying a box of her fanworks is illustrated in the seventh page. What appears
to be a negative film is comprised of 'positive' images including screenshots of an anonymous
message on Tumblr that praises a fan's audioplay, a fan's hand clutching a

Towards the end of sixth grade (I think), I found out about fandoms. A fandom is a community of
fans, participating in fanac and interacting in some way, whether through discussions or creative
works. Some people feel that those in the same fandom as them are like family. We talk to each
other, try to make each other happy, support one another, and give advice and suggestions. Before
you continue, I highly suggest not looking up any animes, shows, or web–comics that I may
mention, no matter how awesome I say they are, unless you are okay with staying up until one in the
morning because you wanted to know what happens next. Also, you might end up spending a lot of
money if you want to cosplay as a character. The Warrior cat books by Erin Hunter are great, and
you probably won't lose sleep of friends because of them, so go ahead and check them out! I had
already been in fandoms without realizing it, like the MLPFIM, Warrior cats, Pokémon, and
Minecraft fandoms. I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trolls have four quadrants, and humans only have one! Matespritship is the closest to human
romance. Kismesissitude is based on mutual hatred rather than mutual love. Moirallegiance is often
misinterpreted as "best buds forever" or "bromance", but with the Homestuck trolls, the emphasis is
on the fact that one of the two has particularly violent tendencies, even by troll standards, and their
interactions with their moirail help to make them less dangerous to themselves and others.
Auspisticism is probably the furthest from anything humans actually do. Basically, an auspistice
mediates between two normal enemies (as opposed to kismeses), in order to prevent it from
becoming too violent. Matespritship and moirallegiance are called "red rom", or "red romance".
They are based on positive feelings. Kismesissitude and auspisticism are called "black rom", or

Disney Fandom Research Paper
A subculture that I belong to is a fandom that many also follow. A fandom that began in November
of 1928 with the birth of a cartoon mouse and has continued to flourish with the creations of 6
theme parks worldwide. That fandom is the one that follows the Walt Disney Company and all that
it makes. With every movie, television show, toy, and theatrical production they produce, the
fandom grows stronger and stronger. The Disney fandom has sustained me through its positivity. It
has fed my soul by giving me a playground to watch my dreams come true and let my wildest
imaginations run wild. Since I was eighteen months old, I have been visiting Disney parks and even
before that, I was watching Disney movies, television shows, and listening to Disney music. My
mother was also raised on Disney and instilled her love for it in me from an early age. Since my

The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and...
The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and Oral Tradition in the Internet Age In 1951,
JRR Tolkien wrote a letter to his publisher, Milton Waldman, in an attempt to describe his vision for
The Lord of the Rings. After outlining the scope of his many interconnected plots, Tolkien self–
consciously articulated his hopes for his novel's reception: "Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my
crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging
from the large and cosmogonic to the level of romantic fairy–story... The cycles should be linked to
a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and
drama. Absurd." With the benefit of hindsight, we know now that his idea was not 'absurd'. Tolkien
almost presciently describes the place his novels have taken in Western culture. Tolkien's works, in
the words of Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, "ha[ve] become part of the mental furniture of the
culture... [They are] a story that everybody kn[ows] about, even if they c[a]n't remember ever
reading or hearing any version of it." This cultural awareness of a story is the direct result of the
adaptations and additions Tolkien described. First with official illustrations, and later with an entire
genre of Tolkien–inspired bands and musicians, and even a ballet, many other hands and minds have
added to the majestic whole. In recent years, the Peter Jackson adaptations of The Lord of the Rings,

Relationship Between Convergence And Harry Potter
Convergence has become somewhat vital to the success of a screen text; the number of mediums it
engages with can, to some extent, affect how much of a fan–base it creates. 'The power of the media
producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways' stated by Henry
Jenkins. (2006:2) Participatory culture has, in some cases, created the potential for more enriched
franchises that surpass their original purpose, some screen texts can develop a lot further than
expected due to how well–received they are. The popularity of the most recognizable film franchises
could be seen as the product of convergence within fan culture. In this essay, I am going to discuss
the relationship between Harry Potter fans and convergence and the various ways the fans have
constructed alternate views of the franchise. I will discuss how Harry Potter has become globally
successful through its convergence and fan culture.
Harry Potter is a relevant case study of convergence because it extends past its original platform,
which was books; there are now Harry Potter video games, merchandise, themed websites and, the
most recent of which, theme parks. In this case, Universal, a company in partnership with Warner
Brothers who own Harry Potter, opened a Harry Potter segment to their original theme park in 2014
in Florida. This was an effort to bring back the former popularity it once had, such as when the first
book was written in 1997 by J.K.Rowling. The series has become a global

Examples Of Being A Fanatic Essay
"Fan or fanatic" Being a fan means "a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a
particular person or thing". A fanatic is "a person filled with excessive and single–minded zeal,
especially for an extreme religious or political cause." Being a fan is better than being a fanatic
because being a fanatic seems a little obsessive and people could get the wrong idea about someone.
Many people do not know the difference between the two. There are more fans than fanatics. A fan
loves whatever it is they are a fan of. If it's a band, a tv show, a celebrity, etc. they just feel happy
when they see it , or when they are in the atmosphere of it. A fan would not go insanely crazy when
they hear someone mention whatever it is they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A fanatic on the other hand would probably scream on the inside. If the fanatic is with a friend, or
someone they know, they would most likely tell them, "Did you just hear what that person said?"
with a lot of enthusiasm. For example, source 2 states "But a thirst for information, education,
knowledge, wisdom and a quest for debate on a daily basis, yes." This quote means a fanatic is
constantly wanting to know what is going on with whoever it is they are a fanatic over. A fan would
also know the words to many songs that they enjoy listening to. There can be some songs that
someone does not know completely, but just because they don't know a song, from beginning to end,
it doesn't mean someone is not a fan. A fan could also go to some concerts, if they wanted to, or if
they can afford it, and most importantly, get a ride there. Some fanatics say the more someone has

school explains part of the discrepancy, there is an another conclusion that can be drawn. The One
Direction fanbase is mostly female, so I think more females were willing to take the survey. The
term "Larry Stylinson" might be more familiar to them, or they might even be fans themselves. The
next question ended up becoming a control question. Out of the 58 responders, every single one

One type of material folklore is the videos I mentioned earlier in my interview with Elizabeth. They

intersectional, some members are even professional artists. Another outlet many fans take is the
writing of fan fiction. While this is something that most fandoms have, Larry fans are truly

25 April 2017 Fandoms a Home to Many When one hears the word "fan" two mental images pop up,
one being a grown man dressed up in a costume, or two a preteen young girl who has posters of

neither of those two images of people. I believe that the word "fan" and "fandom" has turned into
something negative. Most people believe that fandom are for those who are nerds and do not have a

terms of its fan culture and examining the Survivor fandom in relation to existing theoretical and

Spoiling practices, changing fan/producer dynamics, and new media and consumerist engagement
with the show has produced a competitive fan culture unique in its apparent anti–communal and
decidedly negative undercurrents. What I have described as the often conflictual and competitive
nature of this fan culture – or rather the picture of a selected aggregation of fans – makes sense if
one considers that these fans didn't originate in a traditionally 'marginalized' subculture (as with
earlier conceptions of sci–fi fans, for instance). The Survivor fandom is conflictual because the
source of fans' interest isn't the show, but rather the overall fractious and competitive culture itself.
Fandom scholarship and research on the Survivor fandom in particular will require continual
analysis of fan participation and online engagement, as dynamics seem to shift somewhat over time.
Scholarship, too, will need to begin more thoroughly incorporating fans' use of new media as I have

Describe and Analyse a Subculture with Which You Are Familiar
Describe and analyse a subculture with which you are familiar.
The definition of a subculture is a culture within a culture where a group develops distinctive norms
and values that are different from those of the mainstream culture.
The subculture that I will be writing about is called the Fan Base which is also know as the Fandom.
A fan base or fandom is a group of regular supporters and enthusiasts that spend a rather large
amount of time and energy focussing on a team, musician or musical group, entertainer or any other
celebrity; these different people/groups can be classed as sort of a leader or main person that holds
the group together.
Fan bases do not majorly differ from mainstream cultures when it comes to values ... Show more

Also, for many fan bases there are expectations for each fan to have some form of social networking
account so then they can communicate with other fans. Websites such as Twitter, Facebook and
Tumblr would be the main examples of ways to communicate between fans. For music based
fandoms, there is the expectation of having to be at concerts, signings, radio tours and any other
events that the musician/band they follow attend.
For fan bases there is not necessarily a method for learning the groups 'rules' or norms as you
become part of a fan base by simply having something common with another fan, so liking the same
band or television show, having the same dedication toward a team or band and so on. This means
that you are automatically accepted as part of the group, however a lot of fans get agitated when
fans that are part of their fandom decide to 'move fandoms' as they see it as a sort of betrayal to their
'leader', this can lead to unruly behaviour and many arguments within the fan base itself.
This kind of subculture emerged originally in the 1960s when pop music first arrived on the scene. It
was during a time when teenagers wanted to rebel against the system or just wanted be different to
everyone else and this kind of music allowed them to do so. The first fan bases came about because
of groups like The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, these particular groups especially had an impact
on mainstream culture as many teenagers spent a

Fandom: Community, Culture, Community And Culture
Fandom, both as a community and a culture is interpretative. The term interpretative community
was rooted from a literary theorist named Stanley Fish. He established this notion in his book "Is
There a Text in this Class?" (1980), believing that the reader holds a core position both in shaping
and producing the meaning of literary works where according to him, reader's experiences affects
their interpretation of a text. In his study, Fish (1980) divided the act of reading texts into two (2)
categories in accordance with the reading strategies of the reader enabling him/her to interpret the
text and define it. First, the same reader interprets different text differently. Second, different readers
may interpret the same text similarly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of the information age. In Wiatrowski's essay, he argued that the formation of fandom in the 'global
village' is not merely an expression of communal identity, rather, a group performance constructing
the community in terms of ideology and emotions. Wiatrowski asserted that there has been increased
participation in the virtual modes of community's imagination, formation, and maintenance from the

Subculture Of Fandom
A subculture is a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance

identify with certain characters or fictional worlds. Some, believe that fandom can be built around
any shared interest. These fans have conventions and dress up as the characters (cosplaying). They
form committees around a particular fandom.
The dominant culture is the most powerful social influence in which multiple cultures are present,
this is the language, religion, values, and social customs. Fandom opposes dominant culture because
it goes out of the norm. For many, dressing up as a character of a fictional world on a day that isn't

Normality In Fandom Research
That sense of abnormality within the fandom universe is common when first entering it. The notion
of shipping to fictional characters is strange. Simon During, a literary critic, understands that sense

[c]ultural studies can provide space for, and knowledge of, the multiple audiences and communities
who, in various combinations, vote, buy records, watch television and films etc. without ever fitting
the 'popular'" (During 20). The transition of becoming a fangirl/fanboy through shipping can relate
to aspect of 'popular' because it can relate with the term 'normality'. Participating in the traditional

Origins of The Walking Dead
For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of
this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a comic, a video game, and a TV show series. The
focus of this ethnography is to understand how the comic book culture influences many fans. Since
the series is based on a graphic novel series, and some of the fans are schooled in comic culture;
they arrive with literacy in comic storytelling. Others who are not fans may recognize the visually
and narrative of zombie films, in the horror genre after 1968's Night of the Living Dead and Dawn
of the Dead. Yet many Walking Dead fans appear to have migrated to the zombie tale without any
particular connection to the comic book storytelling, or significant fascination, and the series'
fandom illuminates how an apocalyptic imagination has expanded into popular culture.

392). In other words, people are acting as "prosumers," a term coined by Alvin Toffler, by
consuming and producing media texts of their own (Toffler, 1989). The Internet provides a space
where this participatory culture can thrive. Discussion–based forums and boards are especially
active places where fans can interact. According to Jenkins, "message boards and forums become
knowledge communities that structure and organize the fans' knowledge about a particular text"
(Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). From these interactive online hubs, fans can work together to create
distinct meanings unique to their fan culture and themselves, according to media scholar Paul
Booth: "Dialogue through forums and listservs create meaning for the members of the community
separated from the meaning contained (or read) within the extant media object" (Booth, 2010, pp.

blogs are another place where fans can engage in this participatory culture. Blogs, and more
importantly, their ability to comment and provide feedback are integral to the interactivity and
productivity of online fandom. According to Booth, "Comments become a way for the blog to elicit
feedback and participation by members of a community." This ability to provide instantaneous
feedback fulfills the desire of instant gratification and fosters the ability to communicate more

Hasbro Fan Poll Research Paper
I promised I'd let you know my thoughts about what the Hasbro Fan Poll meant for the movement.
With Lucasfilm and Hasbro both silent on the issue, we are left to speculate. And that I what this is,
my interpretation of the facts and events laid in front of me.

What happened was we bridged gaps in the fandom. A gap the mostly just existed in our own minds,

Disadvantages Of Cosplayers
Cosplay has the ability to transform cosplayers into their heroes, whoever they are. But things
haven't always been that ideal. Unfortunately, body shaming and bullying and abusing are very real
and prominent issues for cosplayers at conventions. The sting of negative comments can carry over
into regular life for some and even lead to anxiety or depression (Arielle Lien and psychologist Dr.
Beth Murphy).
Katie Mellema (Fig.22) an experienced cosplayer, shared some insight into this issue in an article on
Cosplayers vs. the World: Social Issues (Volume I) by Jade Chambers (2013). Fig.22 Cosplay Photo

As a result, fans or the audience forget that there are individuals inside those costumes. They are
overwhelmed by the fact that their favourite character has come to life and end up crossing their
limits. Sometimes audiences assume that cosplayers are dressed up in a provocative manner of
because they are "asking for it". This causes sexual and verbal harassment. Women have been
groped, and men have been put down for not fitting or perfectly fitting a certain costume. Thus,
certain organizers are trying to bring awareness to this issue by implementing anti–harassment
policies. In New York's Comic Con, attendees can see a large sign that says 'Cosplay is not Consent',
and that everyone should be treated with respect. (2014)
Harrassment is not limited to just female cosplayers. Male cosplayer John of "Moderately Okay

didn't really affect me much. It surprised me more than anything, like a 'Did that just happen?' type
of thing," he said.

What Makes A Fandom?
Fandoms
Directioners, Beliebers, KatyCats, Swifties, Whovians, Potterheads, Bros, Tributes, Gleeks,
Demigods, Shadowhunters, Initiates, Runners, I could honestly go on forever. What do all of those
have in common? (wait forever for these uneducated people to answer "they're all fandoms"/ try not
to roll your eyes)
Good morning/afternoon everyone. What is a fandom? Well first, I would like to point out that
fandoms are commonly confused with a fan base but a fandom is so much more than that. A fan base
is just a group of people who like the same TV show, book, celebrity etc. and they're willing to say
they like that thing or person. Whereas a fandom is a group of people dedicated to a soul sucking,
gut wrenching, heart crushing something or someone.
And what are these people called? Fanboys for boys and fangirls for, well, girls! Now, please
understand that you can't just say I'm a fangirl or a fanboy. You must first go through the process
most fangirls and fanboys went through.
First is discovery. The person discovers the thing or person and you end up liking them enough to do
the second step.
The second step is when you're interest grows and you head over to the internet and search them up.
This step includes following them on social media such as Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram.
The next step is attachment. It's when you start checking up on them more often and you can't stop
watching videos or readings relating to them. By this time, you can probably still get out of

Girl 's Obsession On Band Boys
As I began exploring into the one direction fandom, I was a little doubtful on what I was getting
myself into. I am the bystander, that sits and watches as the obsession of One Direction is blowing
up all over my social media feed. The fans have a notorious reputation for being viewed on society
to spend countless hours drooling over someone they'll never have. My goal was to seek out the
complexities of the peculiar phenomenon and how this obsession affects their lives. Adventures in
my research led me to a new understanding on how a online obsession over a teen–boy band can
affect the lives of many young girls. Being a part of the fandom online made me evident that my
insight over the surrounding topic of girl's obsession on band boys is incorrect. Through the online
universe, people tend to have an emotional appeal that can be seen which allows us to further
investigate in fictional aspects. As I explored into it further, it became evident that fans behave in a
way to harness the love they all share for their idols. In order to understand, I put myself in different
shoes to try and adapt to a lifestyle I was unfamiliar with. Fortunately for myself, my best friend
Jessica was apart of this community and this allowed the adaptation to come much smoother. In the
past, she would occasionally bring up One Direction, but due to my disinterest of them, she didn't
bring them up as much. When she found out that my research was going into this topic, she became

Harry Potter Fandom Stereotypes
The word fandom, tends to be associated as an audience of passivity, obsession or even violence. As
research has advanced, it is viable to see that these connotations are not entirely valid. Instead the
research on fandom is revealing to be more complex than initially thought. The following essay will
substantiate this claim, by showing how negative stereotypes of the fan may be disputed. This will
be done through the use of the Harry Potter fandom. Firstly, the essay will introduce the concept of a
fan. Following this, an analysis will be given as to how fans are not only an active subcultural
community of readers, but also how they use these mechanisms to be powerful political and social
agents. Additionally, the complexity of the fan shall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
10–17). This perspective tries to override the power that fans appear to have over dominant
ideology. This mask of passivity labels the fan as an overweight, nerdy or a feminized and eroticised
audience. By doing such, the fan appears helpless and weak towards the texts that they consume
(Jenkins, 1992, p. 19). Alternatively, other academics allow fans to be active, but they criticise this
activeness as they perceive it to be inappropriate, uneducated and of lower class culture (Jenkins,
1992, pp. 17–19). For instance, this view insists fans cannot make distinctions between fantasy and
reality which opposes the boundaries of dominant ideologies on reading practices (Jenkins, 1992, p.
17). Moreover, these fans are criticised for their readings strategies as they use readings practices of
high cultural texts for texts that are of popular mass culture (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Case studies
revolving around this perspective might be similar to the upheaval caused when a Harry Potter fan
sexualised Emma Watson, the actress of the character Hermione. The fan took images of the actress
and edited her face onto various child–pornographic images which is definitely an eroticised version
of fan culture. (Daily Mail, 2010). By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale
become associated with such culture and, hence, it is viable to see how, academics have been able to
create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status
(Jenkins, 1992, pp.

Why I Don 't Do You Do It?
I don't know how to start this. I guess I'll start here. I love fandoms. I do. I love celebrity anything. I
don't indulge in it often, because for me it can become all consuming, and let's face it, we all have
lives.
Fandoms have been going on as long as there have been things to "fan" over. This is not new. You
have invented nothing. There is just a new way to do it. I've never experienced fandom like I have
online. It is an amazing, quirky, pit of infamy. The things I see roll past my screen are breathtaking. I
could list them, but we'd be here all night, and as I said, we have lives.
What I want to talk about is disappointment. We've all been there. A bad grade, not winning a
competition, being stood up, there are a million reasons, some of them crippling in their pain.
Stay with me, I have a point.
I belong to an online community. It is full of wonderful, strange people, from all different walks of
life, and it has been the best teacher I have ever had. I have learned more from this board, these
people, and about human nature and altruism than anywhere else. I have also learned, first hand,
about the capacity to care for another human being without expecting anything in return. Pure,
unadulterated kindness. Let me give you an example.

The History of Fandoms
Fandoms are among the so–called 'fabrics of culture' that comprise our lives, regardless of our age,
gender, nationality, and whatever differences that we may have. Fanfiction Terminology defines a
fandom as "the fan–based community dedicated to a particular TV show or other cult–inducing
medium, including movies, books, comics, and other source material" (Common Fandom Terms 1).
Someone may be invested in collecting Beatles albums, and another person may have memorized
every character in the Marvel universe. Many people may be caught up in lamenting over episodes
of Doctor Who, while some may be disturbed yet thrilled by the storyline of Death Note. When
these people aggregate to enjoy particular media together, fandoms begin to expand.
Although fandoms are deemed in the vernacular as 'cool' and 'modern', they actually date back to the
1880s when the fans of the Sherlock Holmes series mourned over the main character's death.
According to Fancyclopedia 3, an organization named First Fandom was created in 1959 to gather
science fiction fans (1). It is not a surprise that there are millions of established fandoms today,
especially since we are living in a world where the Information Explosion has already taken place.
The Fanfiction Statistics Website indicates that there are 6,600,000 registered titles in
Fanfiction.Net, which is an archive for written fanworks appropriately called fanfiction (1). In

Dallas Cowboys Fandom Discourse Community
Joining into a "fandom discourse community" has more extravagant depth than the simplistic
"claiming a team" and representing them solely on game night. Authentic members develop deep
emotional investment into the events that circulate around their team. Whether it be voluntary or
unknowingly, these passionate individuals over any given subject or matter often find themselves
surrounded with or acquainted with those of similar connotation. This is how discourse communities
are developed, through this unification of individuals over common interests. As a Cowboys fan
myself i've had the experience of being shoulder to shoulder next to a stranger sharing excitement
and roaring with joy as if we've known one another our whole lives. The bonds you can make
through this discourse community is what gives it importance. The Dallas Cowboys NFL football
team are a prime example of a fandom discourse community. They aren't solely influencing people
in the Dallas,Texas area but fans are extended all around the U.S. As a member of a fandom
discourse community, it is more than just cheering for the team passionately, it involves knowing the
team and showing that you are an authentic fan. To receive the credibility and status of a fan you

One of the main points of discussion is the idea of the "fanatic" itself and how fandom is an
accepted mode of obsession in the contemporary world. Much of the discourse on the subject deals
with the complex psychology of the word through anthropological and psychoanalytical work on
what it means to be a fan – the mixture of reverence for their object of affection, but also the
embarrassment of being associated with what some might deem as "crazy" or "superficial." The
definition of "fan" has altered over time, with it becoming increasingly negative. Many fans even
shy away from calling themselves that, or separate their fandom identity (often found online) with
their real life identity. While much has been written in the beginning of fandom

From a young age, girls are put under pressure to be sexually appealing for those around her. But
women, being people who still have biological needs and desires to be fulfilled, have rarely been

People often use a word 'fan' to express and to define their enthusiasm for certain target, such as
music stars, sports teams, and celebrities. I myself often use the word 'fan' to describe my passion

'fanatic'. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word 'fanatic' defines as follows:
"connotated religious zealotry and was widely used at the time to refer to those who were mad,
frenzied, or possessed (Oxford English Dictionary 1989, pp.711, 712–713)"(Cavicchi, p.38).

Doe Fandom
Fandom is one of the defining concepts in the modern society. But what exactly makes it so
important? The answer is fairly simple. Fans. „It is fans who identify and build an audience"
(Branston and Stafford, 2006). The people, who, out of their own free will participate and create
communities which are based around a certain artefact of their choosing. These communities then
proceed to debate and often create their own content, which is subordinate to their chosen text, such
as any fan work – fanfiction and fan art– or memes (Slade, Narro and Givens–Carroll, 2015). While
any work created by fan originates from its source, many create their own endings, surroundings and
in some cases decide to rewrite the original with them as a main character or a character with
supporting role to the main protagonist, sometimes even adding themselves as a romantic interest.
Another way of expressing their feelings is a cosplay – costumes created and perfected to resemble
their favourite characters. Although, cosplays are actually a combination of the costume itself and
role playing, so that the fan can resemble the character as similarly as possible. They then proceed to
be photographed and perform as said character. But while most of these interactions happen outside,

The story is important but so are cultural references. It must have a basis, be grounded in something

are several ways how these fans articulate inside their chosen communities. A common way used to
be gatherings, or simple email corresponding. But in the last ten years the most prominent way was
certainly the online fandom gatherings. Slade, Narro and Givens–Carroll states, that digital fandom

Fans And Fandom
Traditionally, the topic of fans and fandom has been well researched throughout popular culture
media. Various studies have been conducted to discover the relationship between constructed
popular media and its impact on society and the concept of fans and fandom represent a positive
relationship between the two. The positive relationship, between fans and popular culture, can be
examined through the work of Bourdieu whom uncovered how culture distinctions are classed in
nature in order to legitimize a class hierarchy (Gray & Murray, 2016, p.358). To make popular
media exclusive, researcher Stuart Hall (1999) discovered that the creators of popular media

Though anti–fans do not support popular culture economically, researcher Dallas Smythe (2006)
revels that anti–fans are knowledgeable individuals based on their experiences undergone
throughout childhood to adulthood (p.244). Using personal experiences, anti–fans engage in
semiotic and enunciative productivity, as author Fiske (1989) quotes, where anti–fans use their own
personal experiences to interpret, comprehend and articulate the popular media content (p.37).
Armed with their personal experiences, researcher Jonathan Gray (2003) documents that anti–fans
are able to interpret the popular culture being produced and construct a recreation that is suitable for
their reaction, and in doing so, react negatively to the popular media content (p.71). In choosing to
adapt the popular media content, researcher Gray (2003) discovers that anti–fans find a concept that
they wholeheartedly dislike and invest great amount of effort and time to express this displeasure;
ultimately allowing them to be active members in popular culture discourse (p.71). An example of
this can be seen in the anti–fandom community that has been created against the 'Fifty Shades of
Grey' series. Research conducted into the anti–fandom community surrounding the displeasure
towards the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' trilogy unveils that distaste in a popular culture media can
produce various distinctions, with each anti–fan having an interpretation, and input, towards what
makes the popular culture unpopular (Harman & Jones, 2013,p.962). According to the researchers
Harman & Jones (2013), the various distinctions that arise in anti–fan discourse is proof towards
exemplifying how anti–fans are active members in production and circulation of popular culture
(p.963). Besides being active members in interpreting popular culture

This dissertation fills a gap in the literature as well as corrects a mistake, but treads new ground,
thus leaves some loose ends. Relatively few dissertations coming out of the discipline of religious
studies pursue religion and popular culture, and fan studies maintains a tendency to repeat
assumptions of the sedimentation of the literature, thus one important need is more studies of
religion and fandom, with the benefit of empirical data. Another important inquiry, specifically as it

their support to their celebrity idols with the emergence of social media. Our group chose this topic
because we notice how fans show their support by going to mall shows or by using certain hashtags
on Twitter and make them trend worldwide. This documentary film aims to change the perspective
people have on fans that they are cheap, desperate, and low class. With this interactivity and
digitalization come a new form of community that sprouted from the computer–mediated
communication (CMC) (McQuail 150–51), the virtual community. According to McQuail, this
virtual community "can be formed by any number of individuals by way of the Internet at their own
choice" (150) and "usually based on some common interest" (150). Fan clubs before are known to
be supporters who would go to shows, guestings, and tapings of their idols but now fan clubs could
also sprout online. Fans have used new media to interact with co–fans who have obviously have the
same interests (their idol or idols). By then, a public sphere would emerge in the new media. What is
interesting in the documentary is that some of the fans we interviewed are not really good at
interacting personally but are able to make friends online because of the people who understand
them and of what they call now as "feels" (a superlative form of having so much feelings towards
someone or something). With mostly narrations about the

Example Of A Media Fan

  • 1. Example Of A Media Fan A media Fan is seen as a subject that is trivialized and dismissed and so this essay will investigate how a fan is a 'complex and contradictory arena for critical enquiry' A fan is depicted to be obsessed, lonely and false worshippers but fans can be more than that as they can be active producers that develop their own meanings from the media. This essay will discuss how fans are seen as destructive and deviant as well as how they can be useful textual poachers who construct their own culture from materials. Relevant examples will be included as evidence. A fan is abbreviated from the word fanatic which means someone who is overly obsessed with a specific celebrity (Jenkins, 1992:12). A fan is normally someone who has an interest in a celebrity and sees them as an icon and someone they can identify with due to Jenkins (1992:13). Fans are seen as less important and are often looked at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is good for the media as people are discussing media texts bringing in interest from viewers and new meanings are analysed (Jonathan et al, 2007:9). Due to Jonathan et al (2007:9) media fans have gone into activities and practices that bring worth to the media for example editing, writing campaigns and blogs. Textual poachers create a community within society that people can relate to as fans will share the same feelings about a specific show and this brings them together (Jonathan et al, 2007:10). An example is the Beauty and the Beast as fans construct their own meanings from the film and they collectively discuss the outcome of the story and they construct a critical analysis of the story (Jenkins, 1992:34). These fans have common ideological beliefs and they share interests with each other and so this states that fans are seen as active producers and skilled manipulators of the media due to Jenkins ... • 2. Harry Potter Fan Activism The youth spend a majority of their time on the Internet or social media, rather than being active participants in their community. Studies of fan communities have increased over the past few years, as being a fan has become more digitized. There has been a focus on the Internet as a place of communal activity for participants. Fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, and so on, are generally a part of a larger "fandom" that is regarded collectively as a community or subculture. However, we are seeing the younger generations move towards new forms of civic and political engagement – ones that are closely tied to their personal interests and social network. For example, the Harry Potter Alliance is an organization that is primarily run by Harry Potter fans. Since the founding of the organization, campaigns have been created that focus on topics such as literacy, United States immigration reform, economic justice, gay rights, sexism, labor rights, mental health, body image, and climate change (Weiss, 2012). I chose this particular organization, not only because of my self–interest, but also because they have received recognition from many popular figures within the Harry Potter community. I will focus in on their website content and campaigns to analyze their activism. The Harry Potter Alliance is an exemplary form of fan activism as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had coined the term to define cultural protests. Jenkins identifies a significant shift that has occurred with the emergence of fan activism in which there is a change in the position of cultural consumers. The shift occurs when passive consumers become active producers (Jenkins, 1992). What this indicates is that many people are moving away from simply consuming the product or buying merchandise to producing it through fan art, fan fiction, video making, and composing music. These forms of admiration speak to the special interests of a fan ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The History of Fandoms To provide a picture of so–called passive or casual fans, I illustrated a fan huddled in her comforters while browsing fanworks. There are floating screenshots of the Tumblr, Archive of Our Own, and Fanfiction.Net homepages in the background, since these websites are three of the most visited fanwork archives. In relation to the second rule, the third rule on the seventh page says, "You don't have to be like everybody else." I started the passage with the statement, "Being in a group is not the same as losing your identity." It is natural for fans to conform to their fandoms' preferences from the moment they join. When I began writing fanfiction, my writing style drastically changed to mimic those of other writers who had far wider readership than I did. Surprisingly, a writer who was relatively new to the fandom for a series I wrote for based her own fanfiction off of mine. The case is similar to those of fans who draw fanart, edit images, and produce animated pictures commonly called GIFs. It is difficult to distinguish between fans' styles due to the lack of uniqueness. The third rule targets the fans who do not believe that their own styles are worth looking at, in comparison with other fans' styles. The picture of a fan carrying a box of her fanworks is illustrated in the seventh page. What appears to be a negative film is comprised of 'positive' images including screenshots of an anonymous message on Tumblr that praises a fan's audioplay, a fan's hand clutching a ... • 4. Fandom Research Paper Towards the end of sixth grade (I think), I found out about fandoms. A fandom is a community of fans, participating in fanac and interacting in some way, whether through discussions or creative works. Some people feel that those in the same fandom as them are like family. We talk to each other, try to make each other happy, support one another, and give advice and suggestions. Before you continue, I highly suggest not looking up any animes, shows, or web–comics that I may mention, no matter how awesome I say they are, unless you are okay with staying up until one in the morning because you wanted to know what happens next. Also, you might end up spending a lot of money if you want to cosplay as a character. The Warrior cat books by Erin Hunter are great, and you probably won't lose sleep of friends because of them, so go ahead and check them out! I had already been in fandoms without realizing it, like the MLPFIM, Warrior cats, Pokémon, and Minecraft fandoms. I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trolls have four quadrants, and humans only have one! Matespritship is the closest to human romance. Kismesissitude is based on mutual hatred rather than mutual love. Moirallegiance is often misinterpreted as "best buds forever" or "bromance", but with the Homestuck trolls, the emphasis is on the fact that one of the two has particularly violent tendencies, even by troll standards, and their interactions with their moirail help to make them less dangerous to themselves and others. Auspisticism is probably the furthest from anything humans actually do. Basically, an auspistice mediates between two normal enemies (as opposed to kismeses), in order to prevent it from becoming too violent. Matespritship and moirallegiance are called "red rom", or "red romance". They are based on positive feelings. Kismesissitude and auspisticism are called "black rom", or "black romance". • 5. Disney Fandom Research Paper A subculture that I belong to is a fandom that many also follow. A fandom that began in November of 1928 with the birth of a cartoon mouse and has continued to flourish with the creations of 6 theme parks worldwide. That fandom is the one that follows the Walt Disney Company and all that it makes. With every movie, television show, toy, and theatrical production they produce, the fandom grows stronger and stronger. The Disney fandom has sustained me through its positivity. It has fed my soul by giving me a playground to watch my dreams come true and let my wildest imaginations run wild. Since I was eighteen months old, I have been visiting Disney parks and even before that, I was watching Disney movies, television shows, and listening to Disney music. My mother was also raised on Disney and instilled her love for it in me from an early age. Since my very first trip, my fascination for Disney has led me to delve deeper and deeper into the fandom. At a younger age, my fascination was with the characters, rides and everything I could see in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether it be similar color schemes as the character of choice or incorporating a whole movie into your wardrobe with pieces symbolic of each character, Disney fans go all out when dressing for a Disney park. Pinterest and Instagram have had a big influence on the Disney Bounding practice because other fanatics will post pictures of their outfits to help inspire those trying to piece together the perfect ensemble for their Disney trip. • 6. The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and... The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and Oral Tradition in the Internet Age In 1951, JRR Tolkien wrote a letter to his publisher, Milton Waldman, in an attempt to describe his vision for The Lord of the Rings. After outlining the scope of his many interconnected plots, Tolkien self– consciously articulated his hopes for his novel's reception: "Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic to the level of romantic fairy–story... The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd." With the benefit of hindsight, we know now that his idea was not 'absurd'. Tolkien almost presciently describes the place his novels have taken in Western culture. Tolkien's works, in the words of Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, "ha[ve] become part of the mental furniture of the culture... [They are] a story that everybody kn[ows] about, even if they c[a]n't remember ever reading or hearing any version of it." This cultural awareness of a story is the direct result of the adaptations and additions Tolkien described. First with official illustrations, and later with an entire genre of Tolkien–inspired bands and musicians, and even a ballet, many other hands and minds have added to the majestic whole. In recent years, the Peter Jackson adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, a story ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Qualitative Research Results And Discussion Chapter 5 – Qualitative research results and discussion To analyse the objectives of this study further, interview questions were ready for opinion leaders, which include journalists, staffs of the management team and PR practitioners. Only key sentences or words of discussion were chosen due to the word limitation, the full–translated transcripts are attached at Appendix B. The findings of interview have three parts, which related to the three research questions. A: For the question of the impact of opinion leaders on Weibo, the viewpoints from interviewees all admitted the leading roles of opinion leaders, but their influences are limited. 1) Most interviewees agreed opinion leaders have the influence on fans, but they pointed out the impact has limitations. Anonymous manager: 'Opinion leaders have the impacts on fans communities, but the impact has the limitations.' Gu Yue: 'Of course they have some impacts on their areas [...] (but) it is easier for them to guide followers to do something more than change the other's opinion.' Relationship Between Convergence And Harry Potter Convergence has become somewhat vital to the success of a screen text; the number of mediums it engages with can, to some extent, affect how much of a fan–base it creates. 'The power of the media producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways' stated by Henry Jenkins. (2006:2) Participatory culture has, in some cases, created the potential for more enriched franchises that surpass their original purpose, some screen texts can develop a lot further than expected due to how well–received they are. The popularity of the most recognizable film franchises could be seen as the product of convergence within fan culture. In this essay, I am going to discuss the relationship between Harry Potter fans and convergence and the various ways the fans have constructed alternate views of the franchise. I will discuss how Harry Potter has become globally successful through its convergence and fan culture. Harry Potter is a relevant case study of convergence because it extends past its original platform, which was books; there are now Harry Potter video games, merchandise, themed websites and, the most recent of which, theme parks. In this case, Universal, a company in partnership with Warner Brothers who own Harry Potter, opened a Harry Potter segment to their original theme park in 2014 in Florida. This was an effort to bring back the former popularity it once had, such as when the first book was written in 1997 by J.K.Rowling. The series has become a global ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Examples Of Being A Fanatic Essay "Fan or fanatic" Being a fan means "a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or thing". A fanatic is "a person filled with excessive and single–minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause." Being a fan is better than being a fanatic because being a fanatic seems a little obsessive and people could get the wrong idea about someone. Many people do not know the difference between the two. There are more fans than fanatics. A fan loves whatever it is they are a fan of. This quote means a fanatic is constantly wanting to know what is going on with whoever it is they are a fanatic over. A fan would also know the words to many songs that they enjoy listening to. There can be some songs that someone does not know completely, but just because they don't know a song, from beginning to end, it doesn't mean someone is not a fan. Most people believe that fandom are for those who are nerds and do not have a life outside of what they are obsessed with. I believe that those who are not in a fandom right now, join one. This paper investigates elements of the audience reception of the American reality TV show Survivor (Mark Burnett Productions for CBS, 2000–, US), and the comment above raises the central issue I aim to address here. By exploring the show in terms of its fan culture and examining the Survivor fandom in relation to existing theoretical and critical work on fandom, I will argue that through online activity, Survivor fans compete with one another just as the contestants battle against each other in the weekly challenges on screen. The Survivor fandom is conflictual because the source of fans' interest isn't the show, but rather the overall fractious and competitive culture itself. Fandom scholarship and research on the Survivor fandom in particular will require continual analysis of fan participation and online engagement, as dynamics seem to shift somewhat over time. The definition of a subculture is a culture within a culture where a group develops distinctive norms and values that are different from those of the mainstream culture. The subculture that I will be writing about is called the Fan Base which is also know as the Fandom. A fan base or fandom is a group of regular supporters and enthusiasts that spend a rather large amount of time and energy focussing on a team, musician or musical group, entertainer or any other celebrity; these different people/groups can be classed as sort of a leader or main person that holds the group together. Also, for many fan bases there are expectations for each fan to have some form of social networking account so then they can communicate with other fans. Websites such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr would be the main examples of ways to communicate between fans. For music based fandoms, there is the expectation of having to be at concerts, signings, radio tours and any other events that the musician/band they follow attend. For fan bases there is not necessarily a method for learning the groups 'rules' or norms as you become part of a fan base by simply having something common with another fan, so liking the same band or television show, having the same dedication toward a team or band and so on. This means that you are automatically accepted as part of the group, however a lot of fans get agitated when fans that are part of their fandom decide to 'move fandoms' as they see it as a sort of betrayal to their 'leader', this can lead to unruly behaviour and many arguments within the fan base itself. This kind of subculture emerged originally in the 1960s when pop music first arrived on the scene. It was during a time when teenagers wanted to rebel against the system or just wanted be different to everyone else and this kind of music allowed them to do so. The first fan bases came about because of groups like The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, these particular groups especially had an impact on mainstream culture as many teenagers spent a ... The term interpretative community was rooted from a literary theorist named Stanley Fish. He established this notion in his book "Is There a Text in this Class?" According to Jenkins, "message boards and forums become knowledge communities that structure and organize the fans' knowledge about a particular text" (Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). This mask of passivity labels the fan as an overweight, nerdy or a feminized and eroticised audience. By doing such, the fan appears helpless and weak towards the texts that they consume (Jenkins, 1992, p. 19). Alternatively, other academics allow fans to be active, but they criticise this activeness as they perceive it to be inappropriate, uneducated and of lower class culture (Jenkins, 1992, pp. 17–19). For instance, this view insists fans cannot make distinctions between fantasy and reality which opposes the boundaries of dominant ideologies on reading practices (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Moreover, these fans are criticised for their readings strategies as they use readings practices of high cultural texts for texts that are of popular mass culture (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Case studies revolving around this perspective might be similar to the upheaval caused when a Harry Potter fan sexualised Emma Watson, the actress of the character Hermione. The fan took images of the actress and edited her face onto various child–pornographic images which is definitely an eroticised version of fan culture. (Daily Mail, 2010). By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale become associated with such culture and, hence, it is viable to see how, academics have been able to create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status (Jenkins, 1992, pp. ... The things I see roll past my screen are breathtaking. I could list them, but we'd be here all night, and as I said, we have lives. What I want to talk about is disappointment. We've all been there. A bad grade, not winning a competition, being stood up, there are a million reasons, some of them crippling in their pain. Stay with me, I have a point. I belong to an online community. It is full of wonderful, strange people, from all different walks of life, and it has been the best teacher I have ever had. I have learned more from this board, these people, and about human nature and altruism than anywhere else. I have also learned, first hand, about the capacity to care for another human being without expecting anything in return. Pure, unadulterated kindness. Let me give you an example. One of the members came to the board, hat in hand and pride tossed aside. She and her family were having a terribly hard time. As in, they only had enough money to keep a roof over their head and the utilities ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The History of Fandoms Fandoms are among the so–called 'fabrics of culture' that comprise our lives, regardless of our age, gender, nationality, and whatever differences that we may have. Fanfiction Terminology defines a fandom as "the fan–based community dedicated to a particular TV show or other cult–inducing medium, including movies, books, comics, and other source material" (Common Fandom Terms 1). Someone may be invested in collecting Beatles albums, and another person may have memorized every character in the Marvel universe. Many people may be caught up in lamenting over episodes of Doctor Who, while some may be disturbed yet thrilled by the storyline of Death Note. When these people aggregate to enjoy particular media together, fandoms begin to expand. Although fandoms are deemed in the vernacular as 'cool' and 'modern', they actually date back to the 1880s when the fans of the Sherlock Holmes series mourned over the main character's death. According to Fancyclopedia 3, an organization named First Fandom was created in 1959 to gather science fiction fans (1). It is not a surprise that there are millions of established fandoms today, especially since we are living in a world where the Information Explosion has already taken place. The Fanfiction Statistics Website indicates that there are 6,600,000 registered titles in Fanfiction.Net, which is an archive for written fanworks appropriately called fanfiction (1). • 30. Dallas Cowboys Fandom Discourse Community Joining into a "fandom discourse community" has more extravagant depth than the simplistic "claiming a team" and representing them solely on game night. Authentic members develop deep emotional investment into the events that circulate around their team. Whether it be voluntary or unknowingly, these passionate individuals over any given subject or matter often find themselves surrounded with or acquainted with those of similar connotation. This is how discourse communities are developed, through this unification of individuals over common interests. As a Cowboys fan myself i've had the experience of being shoulder to shoulder next to a stranger sharing excitement and roaring with joy as if we've known one another our whole lives. The bonds you can make through this discourse community is what gives it importance. The Dallas Cowboys NFL football team are a prime example of a fandom discourse community. They aren't solely influencing people in the Dallas,Texas area but fans are extended all around the U.S. As a member of a fandom discourse community, it is more than just cheering for the team passionately, it involves knowing the team and showing that you are an authentic fan. To receive the credibility and status of a fan you must do more than simply go out and purchase the gear while the team is performing at a prosperous rate. It's deeper than those adorned in the jersey of the current most popular team. It's about loyalty, it's about the history, and hoping for a better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Fan Identity One of the main points of discussion is the idea of the "fanatic" itself and how fandom is an accepted mode of obsession in the contemporary world. Much of the discourse on the subject deals with the complex psychology of the word through anthropological and psychoanalytical work on what it means to be a fan – the mixture of reverence for their object of affection, but also the embarrassment of being associated with what some might deem as "crazy" or "superficial." The definition of "fan" has altered over time, with it becoming increasingly negative. Many fans even shy away from calling themselves that, or separate their fandom identity (often found online) with their real life identity. While much has been written in the beginning of fandom ... Fanfiction is treated as a recent phenomenon despite being around since the existence of the written language; many classic, derivative works could be considered fanfiction of "open source" content. But women, being people who still have biological needs and desires to be fulfilled, have rarely been offered a direct but safe pathway into sexual self–discovery other than through experience, which carries the risks of sexual assault, unwanted pregnancy, and STI acquisition. Men have an entire industry dedicated to fulfilling their sexual desires–the porn industry's treatment of women is nothing to bat an eye at. Having to deal with others' "schoolgirl" fantasies and the idea of being "jailbait" make it hard for a woman at the apex of puberty to safely explore her developing sexuality. Girls also grow up with a ridiculous double standard telling them to avoid being sexy while avoiding prudishness: to dress conservatively if they don't want to get assaulted, but to show some skin because nobody likes a bore. • 35. Doe Fandom Fandom is one of the defining concepts in the modern society. But what exactly makes it so important? The answer is fairly simple. Fans. „It is fans who identify and build an audience" (Branston and Stafford, 2006). The people, who, out of their own free will participate and create communities which are based around a certain artefact of their choosing. These communities then proceed to debate and often create their own content, which is subordinate to their chosen text, such as any fan work – fanfiction and fan art– or memes (Slade, Narro and Givens–Carroll, 2015). While any work created by fan originates from its source, many create their own endings, surroundings and in some cases decide to rewrite the original with them as a main character or a character with supporting role to the main protagonist, sometimes even adding themselves as a romantic interest. Another way of expressing their feelings is a cosplay – costumes created and perfected to resemble their favourite characters. • 36. Fans And Fandom Traditionally, the topic of fans and fandom has been well researched throughout popular culture media. Various studies have been conducted to discover the relationship between constructed popular media and its impact on society and the concept of fans and fandom represent a positive relationship between the two. The positive relationship, between fans and popular culture, can be examined through the work of Bourdieu whom uncovered how culture distinctions are classed in nature in order to legitimize a class hierarchy (Gray & Murray, 2016, p.358). To make popular media exclusive, researcher Stuart Hall (1999) discovered that the creators of popular media encoded their own beliefs, values, norms and/or experiences into the media content that ... Though anti–fans do not support popular culture economically, researcher Dallas Smythe (2006) revels that anti–fans are knowledgeable individuals based on their experiences undergone throughout childhood to adulthood (p.244). Using personal experiences, anti–fans engage in semiotic and enunciative productivity, as author Fiske (1989) quotes, where anti–fans use their own personal experiences to interpret, comprehend and articulate the popular media content (p.37). Armed with their personal experiences, researcher Jonathan Gray (2003) documents that anti–fans are able to interpret the popular culture being produced and construct a recreation that is suitable for their reaction, and in doing so, react negatively to the popular media content (p.71). In choosing to adapt the popular media content, researcher Gray (2003) discovers that anti–fans find a concept that they wholeheartedly dislike and invest great amount of effort and time to express this displeasure; ultimately allowing them to be active members in popular culture discourse (p.71). An example of this can be seen in the anti–fandom community that has been created against the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' series. Research conducted into the anti–fandom community surrounding the displeasure towards the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' trilogy unveils that distaste in a popular culture media can produce various distinctions, with each anti–fan having an interpretation, and input, towards what makes the popular culture unpopular (Harman & Jones, 2013,p.962). That was probably one of the better ones too. But as much as I despised these fanfictions, everyone else loved them. I swear to God there were at least 100 responses (WARNING: it is an undeniable fact that any House of Anubis fan could not spell or do anything grammatically correct if their favorite character's life depended on it) on each chapter of that tree one (yes it took multiple chapters to describe the feeling of climbing up a tree) saying that "these inspireed mi 2 b clim b a tr33" or "im :''''''( know thnx 4 postng i luv u sibuna5evr (Sibuna was the good cult formed by the teenagers to combat the evil PTA cult)." Relatively few dissertations coming out of the discipline of religious studies pursue religion and popular culture, and fan studies maintains a tendency to repeat assumptions of the sedimentation of the literature, thus one important need is more studies of religion and fandom, with the benefit of empirical data. The Cash estate quickly condemned the incident, but further association between Johnny Cash and White Supremacy occurred, such as the re–discovery of a song Cash wrote, "God Bless General Lee." Digital Media Participation: How Fans Interact Online is a short documentary about how fans show their support to their celebrity idols with the emergence of social media. Our group chose this topic because we notice how fans show their support by going to mall shows or by using certain hashtags on Twitter and make them trend worldwide. This documentary film aims to change the perspective people have on fans that they are cheap, desperate, and low class. With this interactivity and digitalization come a new form of community that sprouted from the computer–mediated communication (CMC) (McQuail 150–51), the virtual community. According to McQuail, this virtual community "can be formed by any number of individuals by way of the Internet at their own choice" (150) and "usually based on some common interest" (150). Fan clubs before are known to be supporters who would go to shows, guestings, and tapings of their idols but now fan clubs could also sprout online. Fans have used new media to interact with co–fans who have obviously have the same interests (their idol or idols). By then, a public sphere would emerge in the new media. What is interesting in the documentary is that some of the fans we interviewed are not really good at interacting personally but are able to make friends online because of the people who understand them and of what they call now as "feels" (a superlative form of having so much feelings towards someone or something).
