2. Have I created a brand identity across my music video,
digipak, and magazine advert?
• Imagery – the images used in my magazine advert and digipak have focussed largely on my
artist, through the use of close ups of him. These images are raw and clear. The choice to use
close up and multiple shots of my artist was an effective way to create a brand identity due to
the fact that the focus is on him, closely, making it possible for him to be recognisable. In my
digipak and music video, frequent shots of nature and large areas of land are shown, to
symbolise and reflect upon life and freedom. This creates another element of brand identity,
as it represents what my artist is standing for and projecting in his music. All shots of my
artist, across all three of my products, are in black and white, in order to keep consistent ideas
of potential pain and suffering, and darkness in ones mind. This again, projects and expresses
the ideas a thoughts that the artist is attempting to promote through his music With the artist
wearing dark clothing, it represents the dark, strengthening mood that is being portrayed.
This creates brand image.
• Font – for my magazine advert and digipak, it was very important to keep the text and font
consistent in colour and font type and style. This not only creates a brand image / identity
for my artist, but also creates familiarity for the audience, which is part of brand identity in
itself.
• Colour – In my magazine advert and digipak, I used the colour yellow, alongside black and
white. This was inspired by the small, but what I think to be significant, striking costumes in
my music video, which proved as an iconic part of my music video, although small. The
colour yellow also represents light and life, which is an element in which my artist wishes to
project through his music. By including this colour in all three of my products, it creates a
section of brand identity for my artist, as it is a form of consistency, therefore creating
familiarity.
• Each product portrays ideas and representations of freedom, nature, unity, and strength.
With this, comes familiarity and consistency, which creates brand identity.

3. How will my package sell the song / album to my
audience?
• My three products all link, which provides satisfaction for audience members,
leading to the product being sold. Through the typical conventions of this
genre being used, this will also aid the song / album in being sold successfully.
Conventions such as raw, black and white images of the artist, which is typical
of this genre. As well as this, I have included the convention of having a
simplistic, subtle serif font, which connects to the idea of the important things
in life being simple, and the thoughts of the artist being simplistic and free.
• These representations are shown across all three products, especially in my
music video. This will be successful in the selling of the song / album, as
audiences of this genre look for these conventions when choosing their new
music; these conventions capture their attention. It is important to use typical
conventions as it makes for a quick and efficient selling process.
• Other conventions include the incorporation of nature and life into the three
products, especially my music video and digipak. With this convention in use,
the ideas of freedom and unity are being represented, which are typical of this
genre. With this in place, this will entice the target audience / audience of this
genre, as they will see familiar conventions, this will satisfy and please audience
members.
4. Is it similar to other products?
• My music video relates most to Paolo Nutini’s Iron Sky music video, much of our motivation was derived from the scenes and representations from
this. Representations such as freedom, unity, life, challenges, depression, fear, and strength. We knew we wanted to represent these ideas in our music
video, as these representations inspired and provoked many ideas and thoughts of how to represent them in our own way, but keeping it similar, as we
wished to demonstrate similar representations and portrayals. This video contains characters evidently struggling with an aspect of their lives. This is
shown through close up camera angles, and high key lighting to contrast their sorrowful moods and mindsets. However, my music video is a mix
between narrative, concept, and performance, which is unconventional and challenges the typical conventions. My digipak inspiration was derived
from several digipaks. I was inspired by raw, black and white images of the artist, as well as the use of natural, rural locations in which to capture the
shots of the artist. The rural settings represent the ideas of being alone and the feeling of isolation. The audience can aspire to these representations
and portrayals, as this genre of music will not only inspire and provoke these thoughts, but they are also put in place in order for the target audience to
be taken in, as they look for music such as this, that focusses on these themes. Regarding font and text, I have used the common convention being
serif font throughout, in an attempt to obtain a subtle and simple theme. However, several conventions were challenged and therefore became
unconventional. For example, I used yellow text, and close up images of the artist, as oppose to dark text, and long shots of the artist. In my magazine
advert, I have used a raw, sharp photograph of my artist - conventional - I wanted to use this not only for the reason of conventionality, but because it
works very well with the conceptual theme in my music video, which featured several raw, sharp, black and white shots of indivuals appearing calm,
concerned, and somewhat troubled. Much like the font in some of the magazine adverts from my chosen genre, it is simple, yet effective, with
subtlety. Also, it doesn't obstruct the artists face. The artist name is positioned at the top of the advert, which is a typical convention. As well as serif
font. In some magazine adverts from my chosen genre, both serif and sans serif fonts are featured. I however challenged this convention and only
used serif, as I didn't feel as though a sans serif font would work with my theme, of which I wanted subtle and simple. The artist image that I have
used contrasts with the calm mood that the overall composition of the advert projects, as it causes tension, due to the expression on the artists face,
that provokes thought and curiosity. Another convention that has been challenged is how close up I have photographed the artist, which also hides his
clothing, creating another convention challenge; the artist is conventionally seen to be wearing dark clothing, with urban scenery in the background.
Regarding colour, I have used black, white and yellow, yellow being the main colour theme of both magazine advert and digipak. This also matches the
yellow costumes in my music video.
