puberty?

14. Puberty marks the
beginning of adolescence
and it is the period of time
when males and females
become physically able to
reproduce.

15. Puberty is the time when
you start to become
sexually mature. It usually
happens at the age of 10 or
11 for girls and 12 or 13 for
boys.

16. During puberty,
primary and
secondary sex
characteristics begin
to develop.

You Grow?

18. Your body grows rapidly
during your growth spurt.
Your growth during
childhood and the changes
during puberty are controlled
by your endocrine system.

19. This system is made up of a set
of organs called endocrine
glands. Your endocrine
glands direct your growth.
Endocrine glands produce
hormones.

20. A gland in the brain, called
the pituitary gland, increases
the secretion of a hormone
called follicle-stimulating
hormone (FSH) as a child
approaches puberty.

21. In girls, the FSH activates the
ovaries to start producing
estrogen. In boys, the FSH
causes the production of
sperms.

23. For male adolescents:
* 12 to 13 years old
Start of puberty. The first
pubertal change:
* enlargement of the testicles
* enlargement of the penis starts
just about one year after the
testicles begin enlarging

Appearance of pubic hair
* 14 years old
Nocturnal emissions (or
"wet dreams")

25. 15 years old
* Growth of hair on the face
and the armpit, voice
changes and acne appear

26. For female adolescents:
10 to 11 years
Start of puberty. The first

* development of the breast
* appearance of pubic hair:
shortly after breast development

* Underarm hair
10 to 16.5 years old
* Menstrual period

28. Primary sex characteristics are
changes directly related to sexual
reproduction. The boys experience
their first release of seminal fluid or
ejaculation from the male genital.
The girls experience menarche or the
first release of blood and fluids from
the female genital.

29. Secondary sex characteristics are
changes not directly related to
sexual reproduction.
Boys
• The voice becomes deeper.
• The Adam’s apple becomes
bigger.

and pubic area.
