2.  Euclid called Φ as simply dividing a segment
into what he called "medium" and "extreme
ratio." Here are his words: "We say that a

3.  The first clear definition was given by Euclid around
300 BC
 When Hippasus of Metapontum discovered (in the
5th century BC) that Φ is neither a whole number nor a

4.  Understanding the fact that there are numbers like Φ that
repeats infinitely without showing any repetition or
regularity has caused a real philosophical crisis
 The Pythagoreans were unquestionably convinced that the
existence of numbers like Φ was so scary that it was
supposed to be a kind of cosmic error, information that
should be suppressed and kept secret
 The fact that there are irrational numbers involved also the
discovery of incomensurability. In his work “About the life
of Pythagoras”, the philosopher and historian Iamblichus, a
descendant of a family of Syrian nobles, describes the
violent reaction to this discovery: "They say that the first
man who has them revealed the nature of the
incomensurability of those unworthy of knowing it was so
disliked that he was not only excluded from the Pitagoreic
association and way of life, but that the tomb was built as if
their former colleague had left the living. "

5.  The gold ratio is an irrational number that
can be calculated from the equation:
(1+√5)/2≈1,61803 39887
