The Use Of Steroid Use Used On Recreational Activities
The use of steroids in recreational activities has many consequences on those who take the risk and
use steroids. The writer of this paper takes a stand against the use of steroids because of the many
negative aspects of them. Steroids have a very great number of physical and mental repercussions.
Steroids come in different ways, and each has a different purpose, just as each has a different
repercussion. After examining this paper, readers should be more informed about the life threatening
risks that can come with steroid use. Through the use of many ways, steroids are shown to be a good
risk to take. False advertisements are a great example. In TV commercials and magazines, steroids
are portrayed as such a beneficial application. The pros of steroids are shown, such as the increased
muscle mass, but the cons, such as the physical side effects, are almost never shown. Also, another
reason is peer pressure. So many teens and athletes use steroids nowadays that it is almost
considered mainstream. When one person sees all his friends or teammates injecting and abusing
steroids to give them a physical advantage, he/she might feel the need to use the drugs as well.
However, the reason that people use steroids are the physical advantages they can provide. With the
use of steroids, almost anyone can go from looking like a weakling to looking like a bodybuilder. In
fact, many bodybuilders can obtain the bodies they have through the use of steroids. Anabolic

Why Athletes Use Anabolic Steroids
Steroids are drugs that are used by athletes to increase their muscle strength and power. Steroids
may be taken in pill form or injected. Steroids that are taken by mouth are often more dangerous to
the liver. Those that are injected often remain in the body for long periods.
WHY ARE STEROIDS USED IN ATHLETICS?
Anabolic steroids are used by athletes for their muscle strength and power increasing properties. In
addition, some athletes use anabolic steroids in an effort to reduce muscle fatigue.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF USING STEROIDS?
Anabolic
Liver disease.
Skin turning yellow from liver injury (jaundice).
Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis).

Why Athletes Use Steroid?
Mike was a good football player in high school and was scouted by division one teams," but he
knew the only reason he was being scouted by these teams was because he was using steroids. So
when Mike went to college he continued to use steroids so he could play on the football team.
Everyone expected Mike to be able to make it to the NFL. But when he ran out of steroids,''
everyone noticed that he had barely any muscle then Mike became very sick then later died of liver
cancer. This is just one of many stories of athletes who have made the decision to take steroids. For
many reasons
To begin with, athletes that use steroids are poor role models for children. "Children often look up to

One example is the Jamaican track team was stripped of their 4 by 100 gold medal after Nesta carter
was found to be using methylhexaneamine (Mather). Another career that was ruined was when Ben
Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal when he failed a drug test(Orms). Other
consequences that can come from being caught from using steroids is that in the MLB athletes have
two chances to test negative for use of steroids if they test positive a third time they will be banned
for life. Another possible consequence is if they test positive for anabolic steroids in the NFL three
times the player will not be able to participate that season. Despite what kind of steroid players use,
the consequences are detrimental to their careers and they will always have a label of being a user
and a cheater. Famous swimmer Jack turner was diagnosed with liver cancer after using steroids. (
Rogak pg. 21). Lyle Alzado a former NFL defensive end died of brain cancer even though they
couldn't tell if it was steroids Alzado attributed the steroids to his brain cancer. (Thomas Jr.).
Steroids increase the athlete's chance of getting liver cancer ( Dillingham). Steroid use has been

Why Do Athletes Use Steroids
Steroids were first invented in the 1930's. The Germans experimented the steroids on their own dogs
and their prisoners to stay fit and healthy because their prisoners suffered from malnutrition. In
1950's many athletes came to know about the steroids. They came to know that steroids are very
good for their sports as these can help them in achieving their goals with less effort. The athletes
mainly used steroids for power lifting beating all the records of the past. It was then proven that
testosterone was the only reason behind the magnificent results in the athletes. No sooner Dr.
Ziegler and his workers in the lab started working on testosterone and tried to make it more and
more refine and pure. After seeing the results of some athletes others started to use the steroid too.
The use of steroid was so common that the steroid could be found easily everywhere. Then on
March 1 1991 the federal anabolic control act was in effect putting anabolic steroids oh the schedule

The major side effect of steroid is that it hits directly on our liver and other common effects are
tumours and cancer. Some rare but common ones are yellowish pigmentation of skin, tissues and
body fluids, fluid retention and high blood pressures, increased cholesterol, kidney tumors and
severe acne. Side effects vary on age and sex.
Many male taking steroids may experience in shrinking of their testicles leading to reduced sperm
count and infertility, baldness, development of male breast and in many cases increased rate of
prostate cancer. Whereas women taking steroids may experience facial hair growth, changes in
menstrual cycle, enlargement of clitoris and deepened voice. People using steroids while their
adolescents have a high risk of permanent growth halt permanently through premature skeletal
maturation and accelerated puberty

Summary: The Use Of Anabolic Steroids
The Use of Anabolic Steroids Anabolic steroids have been around since they have been discovered
in the 1930's. ( Who Discovered them?) They are used to significantly increase the rate at which a
person's muscles grow. Since this discovery, bodybuilder's and athletes have abused the drug to gain
an advantage over the other players. In 1990, congress passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act.
This placed anabolic steroids in the same legal class as amphetamines, methamphetamines, opium,
and morphine. A year later, Major League Baseball banned steroids, but only started performing
tests for it in 2003 which had 104 players test positive. These rules and laws were made to keep the
players safe and to also level the playing field. Most people do ... Show more content on

Those who use them and compete in athletics are considered cheaters; no one likes a cheater. And
the health problems that can arise from abusing the drug include: "kidney problems or failure, liver
damage, enlarged heart, high blood pressure, and changes in blood cholesterol, all of which increase
the risk of stroke and heart attack, even in young people." Bentham's philosophy of greatest good for
the greatest number can be applicable here. The only good to come from using this drug is
performance enhancement. Having superior strength can play a significant role in performance,
therefore making the game more fun for the user. But the cons clearly outweigh the pros. It makes
pretty much everyone else you compete against angry because you used the drug to win, and your
overall health might pay the price as well. Some people want steroids to be legal and available to the
athletes for their own reasons, some people may say that it makes it more entertaining. My stance on
this is obviously against the legalization of steroids. I believe they should remain banned and the
laws should be stricter on them. Sports should remain all natural, because those who aren't willing to
pay the price of using steroids should not be expected to compete at the same level as those people

Athletes and Steroid Use Essay
In recent history American culture has become more and more dominated by sports. Out of all of
these sports baseball is considered to be America's pastime. Over the last couple years America's
pastime has come under scrutiny about some of its players using anabolic steroids and other
performance enhancing drugs. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Major League Baseball
commissioner Bud Selig said, ¡§... hopefully we can figure out ways to solve this problem. It needs
to be solved. There is no one I¡¦ve talked to who can say it is not a problem. Now the question is,
What can we do about it?¡¨ (41). The commissioner is absolutely correct in saying that the steroids
issue is a problem. Without a doubt the steroid issue is bringing ... Show more content on

I do agree that the players who are using anabolic steroids are cheaters. It is sad that great
accomplishments and records set by honest players are being smashed by juiced up athletes. In his
Sports Illustrated column Rick Reilly states, ¡§I believe Barry Bonds should go straight to the Hall
of Fame, too, even though I know that he¡¦s a cheater and that the second half of his career was as
phony as Cheez Whiz¡¨ (118). I also sympathize with players who are playing the game honestly
only to be outdone by dishonest players. The youth of America cannot be shown that cheating is
bad, but it is also okay and you can get away with it.
If these players aren¡¦t going to be totally axed from the game, record books, and hall of fame then
we should let the world and future generations know that there is an asterisk next to these
accomplishments. ¡§That asterisk would say: Records are in question because of widespread use of
anabolic steroids¡¨ (Verducci 38). This way we are punishing cheaters while not totally obliterating
their accomplishments. Players who have played the game honestly will see the accomplishments of
dishonest players marred by this historical asterisk. The youth of America will learn from this that
there is no honor in cheating. Let all the people today and of future generations know that this era of
inflated numbers and hall of famers is under scrutiny of widespread anabolic steroid use. I

I am against them having drugs in sports. This has been a big problem for awhile, and it causes the
body to gain more strength where it is injected. It's not fair when people use drugs in sports because
think about it if someone that isn't using the drug vs. someone that is, that isn't fair because the guy
using the drug would most likely win.
Also, a lot of smaller football players like to watch bigger people play and it wouldn't set a good
example for them and so they might try it. Also, drugs like steroids have a negative effect on long–
term health because even though it helps you in the sport later it will come back and hurt you in the
future.
Plus, it just ruins the fun and joy of the game because then people that are using the drug might

to investigate the use of anabolic steroids in Sweden at 1975. Anabolic androgenic steroids are
synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Anabolic androgenic steroids are used to enhance athletic
performance and appearance. A questionnaire was distributed to the ten best male athletes in each
track and field event in Sweden in the year of 1973. In total, 144 athletes were involved in this
investigation and answers were received from 99 (69%). It was asked in the questionnaire whether
the athletes had been using any anabolic steroids. In case steroids had been used the athletes were
asked to answer specific questions related to positive and negative effects

Why Do Bodybuilders Use Steroid?
A person once said, "There are two types of pain in this world. Pain that hurts you and pain that
changes you." There are great bodybuilders who have the strength of a person who takes steroids.
However, bodybuilders shouldn't be using steroids because it's not fair and it has many effects To
begin with, using steroids for bodybuilding isn't fair. In other words, many pressures might drive
young athletes to try steroids. For example, if you were a competitive bodybuilder and wanted to
add 20 pounds of muscle in your off season, your steroid cycle is going to be very different than
when you're cutting for a show and need to reduce body fat while preserving muscle and increasing
muscle fullness, dryness, hardness, and separation. Although most athletes exercise hard, eat

In fact, using steroids can cause cancer, self–abuse, and death. For instance, steroids side effects can
drive kids and teens to try them. Being aware of the kinds of pressures kid's deals with in sports can
help you make sure that your child isn't at risk. Furthermore, besides the health risks, kids who use
steroids without a prescription are breaking the law. Drug testing for all athletes has become
common, and those who fail a drug test for steroids can face legal consequences, including jail time,
monetary fines, the athletes have revealed that not only do they have serious health issues, but their
children have high rates of physical and mental deformities. Being banned from an event or team, or

Steroid use in sports When it comes to the topic of steroid use in sports, most of us will readily
agree that steroid use in sports is cheating. Where this agreement usually ends, however is on the
question of why is the use of steroids in sports cheating. Whereas some are convinced that steroid
use in sports is not cheating, others maintain that steroid use in sports is cheating. I agree that steroid
use in sports is cheating, because people are gaining an unfair advantage on their opponents. When
someone is on steroids their game becomes so much more advanced they now have all these new

Bonds was breaking records and doubling his averages over a short period of time. No one thought
anything of this until a test came out positive for steroid use. People were shocked and didn't expect

choose to cheat as Bonds did should have everything taken from them and be suspended

more concern to fans than Barry Bonds' legal woes is how to regard his all time league record,

First of all steroids can be incredibly harmful to those who take them. Conversely some types of
steroids are used to help people with inflammatory conditions like chronic bronchitis. But those
steroids are categorized as corticosteroids. These corticosteroids are not the same ones as the more
harmful version: Anabolic steroids. Secondly Anabolic steroids are sometimes referred to as "Juice

used to legitimately to induce puberty or to help to who suffer from wasting diseases like AIDS or

Why Do Athletes Use Steroids?
Using steroids seems normal "Over 1.5 million teens admit to using anabolic steroids", said Taylor
Hooton, the leader in advocacy against performance enhancing drugs. Using performance–
enhancing drugs has become the major part of any athletic and nonathletic life since the early Greek
time. What is more, various drugs were used by Roman Gladiators to prevent fatigue and injury.
Proponents of using drugs argue that PEDs cannot be considered as something nefarious in our time,
because it was used as conventional pills by many of our ancestors.

found naturally from hormones. (E) Later could be made into a synthetic drug. The most known
steroids are anabolic and cortisone steroids. (D) This means it can be created in a science lab.
Steroids can be taken either orally or injected directly into the muscle. (C,D) So someone could take

The Negative Use Of Steroids In Sports
Steroids has been one of the most controversial substances when it comes to usage. In basic
chemistry, steroids are made up of several compounds that are vital for the human body; such as
cholesterol and hormones. The negative effects of steroids include heart risk such as heart attacks or
strokes. Steroids has been commonly used in bodybuilding to give competitors the necessary energy
to perform and look better. However, bodybuilders would eventually suffer the aftermath of the use
of steroids. In the peak of the steroid era in baseball, there was a plethora of athletes who used
steroids such as performance enhancing drugs and human growth hormones as ways to accelerate
their recovery and maximize their performances. Along with the negative effects of steroids, there
are also many positive effects when it comes to steroid use. Steroids could be used to treat
inflammation and speed up recovery. Most doctors believe that the use of steroids in a hospital
would be vital in the survival of patients. Overall, the usage of steroids is a double–edged sword that
should require attention and due diligence.

Steroids have been used by a enormous group of people throughout the century and have brought

Steroids have been around since the early 20th century, later they were then illegalized due to many
factors, one of these factors being that they are addictive. Although, steroids might have been
banned from the United States due to its side effects and addictiveness it did not stop people from
abusing these drugs. Steroids compared to other sorts of drugs such as heroine, do not have the same
side effects due to the fact that steroids do not provide the same "high." NIDA states that, "The most
important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in the brain chemical dopamine,
which causes the "high" that drives people to abuse other substances" (NIDA 2). This shows that
other drugs such as heroine gives users effects that draws them back to the drug, unlike steroids,
which draws users back due to the urge to want to get bigger and better. Also, "Studies have shown
that animals will self–administer steroids when they have the chance, just as they do with other
addictive drugs" (NIDA 2). Not only does this show that animals too will abuse steroids, but studies
show that other drugs might also be similar to steroids and that leads back to the fact on why they
were illegalized. Many groups of people are drawn to steroids due to the fact that they are not happy
with their current standards with themselves in life. Not

Should Professional Athletes Use Steroids?
The reality that steroids are used in professional sports around the league is one that brings extreme
controversy. Why? because When these athletes are caught, league CEOs must make difficult
decisions on what to do with the player. These athletes broke rules, and cheated to attain records,
achievements, and trophies. Should these players have their awards and achievements stripped from
them? Are these athletes above the rules and expectations of others?
Tyson Gay was an example of a person who used drugs for an athletic advantage in the Olympics.

Should athletes who dope have awards stripped from them? The answer is yes! Just as Usain Bolt
said it sends the wrong message to our younger generation. Anyone in their right mind would have
to agree. Drug abuse is already not a good thing we want to promote, especially when the abuse is to
gain unfair advantages in winning. If the athlete was so great then why did they have to use steroids
to begin with? The answer is they weren't good enough to win without help, so why should they
keep a trophy that they don't deserve? Four time NBA all–star Lebron James had to sit out of some
high school basketball games his senior year because evidence suggested that he was excepting gifts
from sponsors that were well over a 100 dollars. He was upset and served his punishment, but the
moral was that he learned his lesson and that league officials were unbiased stating that superstar
athletes are NOT above the rules. The point made in this is that if high school and college athletes
have things taken from them for something as minor as excepting a gift, then why should grown
man not have awards taken from them?
The severity of drug abuse should not be taken lightly. The use of performance enhancing drugs in
competitive sports should definitely be illegal. Doping is using something that is above
your own natural athletic ability and should never be allowed. The athlete who uses the drugs should
have their titles and medals stripped. If a coach is somehow

Anabolic Steroids And Steroids Use
The Plunge: A lifestyle of Cheating Gym Candy, 'roids, juice, pumpers, weight trainers, clear, beans
and hype (Steroids and their). All of these words are slang for the illegal substance known more
commonly as anabolic steroids and HGH (human growth hormone). The controversy surrounding
anabolic steroids and HGH in sports has stormed to the forefront of the many problems that plague
America today. Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of the male sex
hormone testosterone. Some athletes seeking increased muscular strength and size abuse anabolic
steroids (Ricki Lewis). According to Fox News, ¬¬¬5% of middle school and high school aged–
children have or currently use anabolic steroids. 30 to 40% of college and professional athletes use
steroids, as well as 10–20% of high school athletes (Ricki Lewis). Despite their illegality, law
enforcement officials cannot devote more resources to policing steroid use and trafficking because
they are still fighting the abuse of other illegal drugs that affect many more young people
(McCloskey and Bailes). Many athletes looking to gain a competitive edge on all levels use anabolic
steroids because of their muscle growth and muscle building benefits, but overlook the extensive list
of sometimes life–threatening side effects that steroids may bring. I believe that athletes should not
believe they have the right to take steroids to gain an even slight competitive advantage because it

How To Use Steroids In Sports
Steroid Use in Sports
Steroids are substances that some athletes use to try to improve their athletic performance. Steroid
use interrupts normal hormone production in the body. Steroids can cause many side effects.
Anabolic steroids (anabolic–androgenic steroids) are manmade (synthetic) versions of the male sex
hormone (testosterone). These steroids can increase muscle size and reduce body fat. They also
activate the development of male sexual traits in men and women.

Anabolic–androgenic steroids and androstenedione are banned from all major athletic competitions.
Using steroids to improve athletic performance is unsafe, and it gives athletes an unfair advantage in
competition. When athletes use steroids to improve their performance, they often take high doses
that are considered unsafe. This high dosage can lead to health problems.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), steroids are legal only when they are
used to treat certain medical conditions. Tests that screen for steroid use are routinely used in many
athletic competitions. There can be severe penalties for athletes who are caught using steroids.
There are several ways of using steroids, including:
Taking steroids by mouth (orally). This is often dangerous for the liver.
Injecting steroids into the muscles. Injected steroids often remain in the body for long periods of
time.
Applying steroids to the skin as a cream, gel, or patch.
It is possible to become addicted to steroids. Athletes who use steroids may develop withdrawal
symptoms when they stop using steroids. Withdrawal symptoms may include:

The Use Of Anabolic Steroids
Picture yourself being the best athlete in the world and in your sport. After you picture that imagine
how you would feel if you were caught with steroids and banned. Your reputation is tarnished and
everything you have done has gone to waste. This is what has happened to past athletes and is still
happening to present athletes. Athletes have been using steroids since the 70's and use quickly
ascended in the 80's and so forth into the early 2000's. Steroids should not be able to be used by

Some will argue that they are beneficial to the body and others will say they harm the body in a big
way. "If each of us ought to be free to assume risks that we think are worth taking, shouldn't athletes
have the same freedom as anyone else?(Simon, 1). This was said by a professor at hamilton college.
He suggests that people take their own risks and thinks that if athletes take steroids it's at their own
use. "There are several reasons to ban performance–enhancing drugs: respect for the rules of sports,
recognition that natural talents and their perfection are the point of sports, and the prospect of an
'arms race' in athletic performance.(Murray,6). President of Hastings center Thomas Murray thinks
PED's should be banned. He says athletes disrespect the sport while using drugs. He also says that
taking drugs destroys the description of sports and that is natural talent and perfection. He finally
ends it by saying drugs destroy the competitive nature of all sports and turns it into a game of

Do Athletes Use Steroids?
Using Steroids to build muscle mass in athletes is illegal, and dangerous. Athletes have lost world
records, and Olympic medals due to the use of steroids. Although steroids are used to enhance
performance in athletes, they are also used to help treat cancer patients. Steroids are needed for
some patients, but for most the negative effects outweigh the positive. Athletes that use steroids are
trying to increase their muscle mass quickly, they do not take into consideration the effects it will

Blood doping creates the same effect as athletes training at high altitude locations, however blood
doping is cheating. As you can see in the diagram to the right doped blood has a lot more red blood
cells than normal blood. By having more red blood cells one can pump blood from their lungs to
their muscles increasing one's athletic capability. Even though some see blood doping as being safer
than steroids but the truth is blood doping has a large number of negative side effects. Blood doping
is known to cause infections and the increased amount of blood can cause similar problems as EPO.
As well as the risk of AIDS and hepatitis. Blood doping has recently become easily detectable just

Use of Steroids by Athletes Essay
A survey was presented to 198 U.S athletes with the following scenario. You are offered a banned
performance enhancing substance that comes with two guarantees: 1) You will not be caught. 2).
You will win every competition you enter for the next five years and then you will die from the side
effects of the substance. Would you take it? More than half the athletes said yes. As we can infer
from the above survey, a large number of professional athletes are willing to risk their lives for the
chance of victory and recognition.

Many Chinese athletes have been disqualified for illegal drug use. Similarly, a number of U.S
athletes have admitted to using these drugs. Steroids have been found in athletes engaged in a
variety of sports, including swimmers, golfers, baseball players, boxers, hockey players, and body
builders (Burnsytn 234).
Anabolic steroids have been proven to have serious adverse health effects. Researchers have linked
extensive use of these drugs to liver damage, coronary heart disease, and congestive heart failure.
Anabolic steroids cause testicular atrophy and breast enlargement in males and menstrual cycle
difficulties and body–hair growth in women. In addition, athletes who use anabolic steroids may
exhibit aggressive behavior, mood swings, and explosive tempers (Etzen 64).
Besides the concern about safety, the doping controversy is centered on the issue of fair play.
Opponents argue that athletes who use performance–enhancing substances have an unfair
advantage. Many athletes choose to train and compete with nothing more than hard work and
determination. For many of us, this is the way sport is meant to be. However, some athletes choose
to gain an advantage over others by using substances that are banned. These athletes do not consider
what they are doing to be wrong because these substances are available to everyone on the black
market, so anyone can use them. Thus,

Athletes take straight testosterone to boost their performance. Frequently, the anabolic steroids that
athletes use are synthetic modifications of testosterone. These hormones have approved medical

They can be taken as pills, injections or topical treatments. Side effects from steroids are a serious

it "Steroids undermine the integrity by placing in doubt the skills of the players, as fans assume that

Why Do Athletes Use Steroids?
Athletes have used performance enhancing drugs(PED) throughout history to increase personal

How To Use Anabolic Steroids
The use of steroids does not only risk the ineligibility of an athlete, but it also can negatively affect
their health mentally and physically. Anabolic steroid use increases strains and tears of the tendons
and ligaments connected to the muscle. These steroids come with a very high price tag. Steroids
affect the joints and create a breakdown in the joint area because the muscle that's being built puts
tremendous amount of stress on the joints. So, although the muscles may grow and the athlete may
have unbelievable power and strength gains, in the long run, it is just going to put a tremendous
amount of stress on the joints (Kuhn). Many athletes do not realize how much strain they actually
put on their muscles, and they tend to take larger amounts of these substances. ... Show more content

Anabolic steroids are also known to increase the number of red blood cells, increase the factors in

been known to cause an increased sense of wellbeing, and at toxically high doses hypomania, which
is an elevation of mood and a need to always be active, which is a mental disease. Even with the
idea that the use of these drugs can cause mental diseases, it is not known to be addictive. Since it

These so called dangerous drugs help people with their health in many ways. Steroids are a miracle
drug for burn victims, cancer patients, and those infected with HIV. For example, Jeff Taylor, who
has been diagnosed with HIV as he was near death with having only two "T" cells and decided to
test an old bodybuilding drug. As a result, he gain over 300 "T" cells which helped him keep living

look evil. When people die the public always question what was the real cause of it and when the
media realizes they took a certain drug they blame that. Like when an athlete takes steroids and then
is diagnosed with cancer; however, there is no link found by taking steroids and cancer, so the
society just wants to make this drug look terrible. Also in all honesty, there are more problems than
the propaganda of steroids such as alcohol, tobacco, and texting while driving, but as people are
blinded to see the other problems in society. Furthermore, look what it has done to the sports world.
Steroids impacted baseball the most around the late 80's and 90's when America's pastime was

winning because they cheated isn't fair to other competitors who tried really hard to let alone get in

At least half the guys are using steroids" (Caminiti in "Totally Juiced"). Verducci commented,
"Steroid use, which a decade ago was considered a taboo violated by a few renegade sluggers, is
now so rampant in baseball that even pitchers and wispy outfielders are juicing up" (Verducci).
Though the real number probably lies under twenty percent, it is a significant enough number to
have a detrimental impact on the game.
The correct term for the steroids being used is anabolic androgenic steroids. Anabolic describes its
effect of increasing muscle mass. Androgenic describes its effect on the development of male sexual
characteristics. They are commonly referred to as anabolic steroids, "juice," "'roids," or simply
steroids. Despite all the negative accusations of using anabolic steroids as a muscle enhancer, the
fact is they do work. They increase strength and muscle mass, improve fast twitch muscles, and
ultimately allow an athlete to transcend physical limitations and reach a higher level of performance.
Texas pitcher Kenny Rodgers said:
Basically, steroids can jump you a level or two. The average player can become a star, and the star
player can become a superstar, and the superstar? Forget it. He can do things we've never seen
before. You take a guy who already has great hand–eye coordination and make him stronger, and
without a doubt he'll be better. (Rodgers in "Totally Juiced")

Then on

Why do athletes get so hooked on this so called "Steroid" ? I'm interested in this question, because
that's the question that truly caught my attention the most and, also keeps me wondering. If people
who use it have seen improvement, why do they keep using it. The anabolic steroid also known as
the anabolic–androgenic steroid is a drug that athletes use to give more muscle mass to the body and
create more testosterone in the body. If traced back to the 1940's steroids first appeared in Germany.
Athletes had begun to use this substance as early as 1950 at the olympic games during the Cold war.

Steroid use in sports
When it comes to the topic of steroid use in sports, some of us will agree that it is a debatable topic.
Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of whether or not it is cheating to use
steroids while in a sport. Whereas some are convinced that it is not cheating due to the benefits it
provides towards muscle growth and repair, others maintain their belief that it is a form of cheating
because of the regulations that have been acted upon it. I agree that steroid use in sports is cheating
not only because of the regulations that have been forced by major sport organizations, but also
because of the enhanced strength it provides for an athlete against a non–using athlete. Some well–
known athletes use steroids, in particular, anabolic steroids, as an advantage to win or achieve
greatness in a sport. An anabolic steroid is "A group of synthetic hormones that promote the storage
of protein and the growth of tissue, sometimes used by athletes to increase muscle size and strength"
(ProQuest Staff). Though I concede that anabolic steroids promote muscle growth, I still insist that it
is still considered cheating. What happened to being successful because of talent? Perhaps this
quote, by 7 time NBA all–star, Kevin Durant will explain, "Hard work beats talent when talent

Many body builders mans believed in "The pain you feel it today will be the strength you feel it

of muscles. That is not the case; the case is that some boys are taking steroid. The steroid came like
bills or injections and it have many types, each type has a specific job on the man body. It act like a
hormones or vitamins that help the muscles to build faster. There are three impacts of using the

competitions.

Some studies show that the steroid has a bad effect on the human heart. Some of the steroid
ingredients make the blood pressure get higher after taking the injection. Every time the man will
take the steroid the blood pressure will raise. As a result, this will make the heart become weak and
it might leads to a heart attack.
The last effect is loosing in some athletic competitions. Most of these men are getting fitness and
have muscle not just for having power. They want to join in some competitions for the best body.
They work on their selves on the gym but there is no enough time so they use the steroid to get their
muscles bigger. These types of competitions do not allow them to join if they knew that they are
doing that. So, if the judges know they will lose the competitions. In that moment, they will feel
angry because of the mood swings, and their blood pressure will get much higher and that is a big
problem for their health.
To summaries, there are three different effect of taking the steroid. Changing the hormones, damage
the heart, loosing the game. I suggest to any boy who wants to build up his body, to find a good
coach that can help him at the gym and give him a good diet that will build his muscles faster and in
healthy way. Lastly, I think that the ministry of health takes the decision on stopping these type of

The Use Of Steroid Use Used On Recreational Activities

  • 1. The Use Of Steroid Use Used On Recreational Activities The use of steroids in recreational activities has many consequences on those who take the risk and use steroids. The writer of this paper takes a stand against the use of steroids because of the many negative aspects of them. Steroids have a very great number of physical and mental repercussions. Steroids come in different ways, and each has a different purpose, just as each has a different repercussion. After examining this paper, readers should be more informed about the life threatening risks that can come with steroid use. Through the use of many ways, steroids are shown to be a good risk to take. False advertisements are a great example. In TV commercials and magazines, steroids are portrayed as such a beneficial application. The pros of steroids are shown, such as the increased muscle mass, but the cons, such as the physical side effects, are almost never shown. Also, another reason is peer pressure. So many teens and athletes use steroids nowadays that it is almost considered mainstream. When one person sees all his friends or teammates injecting and abusing steroids to give them a physical advantage, he/she might feel the need to use the drugs as well. However, the reason that people use steroids are the physical advantages they can provide. With the use of steroids, almost anyone can go from looking like a weakling to looking like a bodybuilder. In fact, many bodybuilders can obtain the bodies they have through the use of steroids. Anabolic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Why Athletes Use Anabolic Steroids Steroids are drugs that are used by athletes to increase their muscle strength and power. Steroids may be taken in pill form or injected. Steroids that are taken by mouth are often more dangerous to the liver. Those that are injected often remain in the body for long periods. WHY ARE STEROIDS USED IN ATHLETICS? Anabolic steroids are used by athletes for their muscle strength and power increasing properties. In addition, some athletes use anabolic steroids in an effort to reduce muscle fatigue. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF USING STEROIDS? Anabolic Liver disease. Skin turning yellow from liver injury (jaundice). Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis). Liver cancer. • 5. Why Athletes Use Steroid? Mike was a good football player in high school and was scouted by division one teams," but he knew the only reason he was being scouted by these teams was because he was using steroids. So when Mike went to college he continued to use steroids so he could play on the football team. Everyone expected Mike to be able to make it to the NFL. But when he ran out of steroids,'' everyone noticed that he had barely any muscle then Mike became very sick then later died of liver cancer. This is just one of many stories of athletes who have made the decision to take steroids. For many reasons To begin with, athletes that use steroids are poor role models for children. "Children often look up to athletes as a person they want to be just like, One reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example is the Jamaican track team was stripped of their 4 by 100 gold medal after Nesta carter was found to be using methylhexaneamine (Mather). Another career that was ruined was when Ben Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal when he failed a drug test(Orms). Other consequences that can come from being caught from using steroids is that in the MLB athletes have two chances to test negative for use of steroids if they test positive a third time they will be banned for life. Another possible consequence is if they test positive for anabolic steroids in the NFL three times the player will not be able to participate that season. Despite what kind of steroid players use, the consequences are detrimental to their careers and they will always have a label of being a user and a cheater. Famous swimmer Jack turner was diagnosed with liver cancer after using steroids. ( Rogak pg. 21). Lyle Alzado a former NFL defensive end died of brain cancer even though they couldn't tell if it was steroids Alzado attributed the steroids to his brain cancer. (Thomas Jr.). Steroids increase the athlete's chance of getting liver cancer ( Dillingham). Steroid use has been associated with side effects such as liver cancer, and heart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Why Do Athletes Use Steroids Steroids were first invented in the 1930's. The Germans experimented the steroids on their own dogs and their prisoners to stay fit and healthy because their prisoners suffered from malnutrition. In 1950's many athletes came to know about the steroids. They came to know that steroids are very good for their sports as these can help them in achieving their goals with less effort. The athletes mainly used steroids for power lifting beating all the records of the past. It was then proven that testosterone was the only reason behind the magnificent results in the athletes. No sooner Dr. Ziegler and his workers in the lab started working on testosterone and tried to make it more and more refine and pure. After seeing the results of some athletes others started to use the steroid too. The use of steroid was so common that the steroid could be found easily everywhere. Then on March 1 1991 the federal anabolic control act was in effect putting anabolic steroids oh the schedule ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many male taking steroids may experience in shrinking of their testicles leading to reduced sperm count and infertility, baldness, development of male breast and in many cases increased rate of prostate cancer. • 9. Summary: The Use Of Anabolic Steroids The Use of Anabolic Steroids Anabolic steroids have been around since they have been discovered in the 1930's. ( Who Discovered them?) They are used to significantly increase the rate at which a person's muscles grow. Since this discovery, bodybuilder's and athletes have abused the drug to gain an advantage over the other players. In 1990, congress passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act. This placed anabolic steroids in the same legal class as amphetamines, methamphetamines, opium, and morphine. A year later, Major League Baseball banned steroids, but only started performing tests for it in 2003 which had 104 players test positive. These rules and laws were made to keep the players safe and to also level the playing field. Most people do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those who use them and compete in athletics are considered cheaters; no one likes a cheater. And the health problems that can arise from abusing the drug include: "kidney problems or failure, liver damage, enlarged heart, high blood pressure, and changes in blood cholesterol, all of which increase the risk of stroke and heart attack, even in young people." Bentham's philosophy of greatest good for the greatest number can be applicable here. The only good to come from using this drug is performance enhancement. Having superior strength can play a significant role in performance, therefore making the game more fun for the user. But the cons clearly outweigh the pros. It makes pretty much everyone else you compete against angry because you used the drug to win, and your overall health might pay the price as well. Some people want steroids to be legal and available to the athletes for their own reasons, some people may say that it makes it more entertaining. My stance on this is obviously against the legalization of steroids. I believe they should remain banned and the laws should be stricter on them. Sports should remain all natural, because those who aren't willing to pay the price of using steroids should not be expected to compete at the same level as those people who ... • 11. Athletes and Steroid Use Essay In recent history American culture has become more and more dominated by sports. Out of all of these sports baseball is considered to be America's pastime. Over the last couple years America's pastime has come under scrutiny about some of its players using anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said, ¡§... hopefully we can figure out ways to solve this problem. It needs to be solved. There is no one I¡¦ve talked to who can say it is not a problem. Now the question is, What can we do about it?¡¨ (41). The commissioner is absolutely correct in saying that the steroids issue is a problem. Without a doubt the steroid issue is bringing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do agree that the players who are using anabolic steroids are cheaters. It is sad that great accomplishments and records set by honest players are being smashed by juiced up athletes. In his Sports Illustrated column Rick Reilly states, ¡§I believe Barry Bonds should go straight to the Hall of Fame, too, even though I know that he¡¦s a cheater and that the second half of his career was as phony as Cheez Whiz¡¨ (118). I also sympathize with players who are playing the game honestly only to be outdone by dishonest players. The youth of America cannot be shown that cheating is bad, but it is also okay and you can get away with it. If these players aren¡¦t going to be totally axed from the game, record books, and hall of fame then we should let the world and future generations know that there is an asterisk next to these accomplishments. ¡§That asterisk would say: Records are in question because of widespread use of anabolic steroids¡¨ (Verducci 38). This way we are punishing cheaters while not totally obliterating their accomplishments. Players who have played the game honestly will see the accomplishments of dishonest players marred by this historical asterisk. The youth of America will learn from this that there is no honor in cheating. Let all the people today and of future generations know that this era of inflated numbers and hall of famers is under scrutiny of widespread anabolic steroid use. I ... • 13. Steroid Use In Sports I am against them having drugs in sports. This has been a big problem for awhile, and it causes the body to gain more strength where it is injected. It's not fair when people use drugs in sports because think about it if someone that isn't using the drug vs. someone that is, that isn't fair because the guy using the drug would most likely win. Also, a lot of smaller football players like to watch bigger people play and it wouldn't set a good example for them and so they might try it. Also, drugs like steroids have a negative effect on long– term health because even though it helps you in the sport later it will come back and hurt you in the future. Plus, it just ruins the fun and joy of the game because then people that are using the drug might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Why Do Bodybuilders Use Steroid? A person once said, "There are two types of pain in this world. Pain that hurts you and pain that changes you." There are great bodybuilders who have the strength of a person who takes steroids. However, bodybuilders shouldn't be using steroids because it's not fair and it has many effects To begin with, using steroids for bodybuilding isn't fair. In other words, many pressures might drive young athletes to try steroids. For example, if you were a competitive bodybuilder and wanted to add 20 pounds of muscle in your off season, your steroid cycle is going to be very different than when you're cutting for a show and need to reduce body fat while preserving muscle and increasing muscle fullness, dryness, hardness, and separation. • 19. Steroid Use In Sports Steroid use in sports When it comes to the topic of steroid use in sports, most of us will readily agree that steroid use in sports is cheating. Where this agreement usually ends, however is on the question of why is the use of steroids in sports cheating. Whereas some are convinced that steroid use in sports is not cheating, others maintain that steroid use in sports is cheating. I agree that steroid use in sports is cheating, because people are gaining an unfair advantage on their opponents. When someone is on steroids their game becomes so much more advanced they now have all these new abilities at their arsenal. Bonds was breaking records and doubling his averages over a short period of time. No one thought anything of this until a test came out positive for steroid use. Athletes that choose to cheat as Bonds did should have everything taken from them and be suspended indefinitely. If they love the sport as much as they say they do why cheat and have fans no longer cheer for your success. In the article Barry Bonds Steroids Use the author states, "What is perhaps of more concern to fans than Barry Bonds' legal woes is how to regard his all time league record, whether or not any of his accomplishments should stand, because knowingly or not he did this with chemical assistance. • 23. Why Do Athletes Use Steroids? Using steroids seems normal "Over 1.5 million teens admit to using anabolic steroids", said Taylor Hooton, the leader in advocacy against performance enhancing drugs. Using performance– enhancing drugs has become the major part of any athletic and nonathletic life since the early Greek time. What is more, various drugs were used by Roman Gladiators to prevent fatigue and injury. Proponents of using drugs argue that PEDs cannot be considered as something nefarious in our time, because it was used as conventional pills by many of our ancestors. There have been caught a lot of famous athletes who used prohibited drugs. Some athletes, Danish cyclist Knut Jensen and British cyclist Tommy Simpson, died due to doping. Nowadays, using PEDs does not seem very surprising. To be candid, we have the whole generation of athletes that is built on the various steroids and obstinate substances. Ben Johnson, a Canadian sprinter, is stripped of his gold medal at the 1988 Olympic games in Seul, Korea after testing positive for anabolic steroid (BBC). Steroids have been used by a enormous group of people throughout the century and have brought along with them huge and devastating problems. Although, steroids might have been banned from the United States due to its side effects and addictiveness it did not stop people from abusing these drugs. Steroids compared to other sorts of drugs such as heroine, do not have the same side effects due to the fact that steroids do not provide the same "high." NIDA states that, "The most important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in the brain chemical dopamine, which causes the "high" that drives people to abuse other substances" (NIDA 2). This shows that other drugs such as heroine gives users effects that draws them back to the drug, unlike steroids, which draws users back due to the urge to want to get bigger and better. Also, "Studies have shown that animals will self–administer steroids when they have the chance, just as they do with other addictive drugs" (NIDA 2). Not only does this show that animals too will abuse steroids, but studies show that other drugs might also be similar to steroids and that leads back to the fact on why they were illegalized. Why? because When these athletes are caught, league CEOs must make difficult decisions on what to do with the player. These athletes broke rules, and cheated to attain records, achievements, and trophies. Should these players have their awards and achievements stripped from them? Are these athletes above the rules and expectations of others? Tyson Gay was an example of a person who used drugs for an athletic advantage in the Olympics. Anyone in their right mind would have to agree. Drug abuse is already not a good thing we want to promote, especially when the abuse is to gain unfair advantages in winning. If the athlete was so great then why did they have to use steroids to begin with? The answer is they weren't good enough to win without help, so why should they keep a trophy that they don't deserve? Four time NBA all–star Lebron James had to sit out of some high school basketball games his senior year because evidence suggested that he was excepting gifts from sponsors that were well over a 100 dollars. He was upset and served his punishment, but the moral was that he learned his lesson and that league officials were unbiased stating that superstar athletes are NOT above the rules. The point made in this is that if high school and college athletes have things taken from them for something as minor as excepting a gift, then why should grown man not have awards taken from them? The severity of drug abuse should not be taken lightly. The use of performance enhancing drugs in competitive sports should definitely be illegal. The "ongoing and delicate subject, baseball's dirty, little secret that is no secret anymore," is a huge and growing problem (Curry B20). Now that light has been shed on the issue, critics are beginning to realize the magnitude of this problem and do not like it. Steroids are a cheating virus that is spreading quickly. Verducci commented, "Steroid use, which a decade ago was considered a taboo violated by a few renegade sluggers, is now so rampant in baseball that even pitchers and wispy outfielders are juicing up" (Verducci). Though the real number probably lies under twenty percent, it is a significant enough number to have a detrimental impact on the game. The correct term for the steroids being used is anabolic androgenic steroids. Anabolic describes its effect of increasing muscle mass. Androgenic describes its effect on the development of male sexual characteristics. They are commonly referred to as anabolic steroids, "juice," "'roids," or simply steroids. Despite all the negative accusations of using anabolic steroids as a muscle enhancer, the fact is they do work. They increase strength and muscle mass, improve fast twitch muscles, and ultimately allow an athlete to transcend physical limitations and reach a higher level of performance. Texas pitcher Kenny Rodgers said: Basically, steroids can jump you a level or two. The average player can become a star, and the star player can become a superstar, and the superstar? Forget it. He can do things we've never seen before. You take a guy who already has great hand–eye coordination and make him stronger, and without a doubt he'll be better. • 69. Anabolic Steroid Use And Anabolic Steroids Why do athletes get so hooked on this so called "Steroid" ? I'm interested in this question, because that's the question that truly caught my attention the most and, also keeps me wondering. If people who use it have seen improvement, why do they keep using it. The anabolic steroid also known as the anabolic–androgenic steroid is a drug that athletes use to give more muscle mass to the body and create more testosterone in the body. If traced back to the 1940's steroids first appeared in Germany. Athletes had begun to use this substance as early as 1950 at the olympic games during the Cold war. Website http://Cesar.com states, " From that point until the early 1970 's, steroids became increasingly popular among not just Olympic athletes, but also professional sports players and high school athletes (Cesar). • 71. Steroid Use Sports : Steroids Should Not Be Banned Steroid use in sports When it comes to the topic of steroid use in sports, some of us will agree that it is a debatable topic. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of whether or not it is cheating to use steroids while in a sport. Whereas some are convinced that it is not cheating due to the benefits it provides towards muscle growth and repair, others maintain their belief that it is a form of cheating because of the regulations that have been acted upon it. I agree that steroid use in sports is cheating not only because of the regulations that have been forced by major sport organizations, but also because of the enhanced strength it provides for an athlete against a non–using athlete. Some well– known athletes use steroids, in particular, anabolic steroids, as an advantage to win or achieve greatness in a sport. An anabolic steroid is "A group of synthetic hormones that promote the storage of protein and the growth of tissue, sometimes used by athletes to increase muscle size and strength" (ProQuest Staff). Though I concede that anabolic steroids promote muscle growth, I still insist that it is still considered cheating. What happened to being successful because of talent? Perhaps this quote, by 7 time NBA all–star, Kevin Durant will explain, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." Consisting of hard work in the quote, does that still imply that steroid use for hard work is okay? The answer is no. A person that does not use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
