Starting as a group of friends from Columbia University, they eventually came to be known as the
Beats. Led by Jack Kerouac, this group included such artists as Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence
Ferlinghetti, Bill Burroughs, Neal Cassady, and many others. They came from all walks of life.
Kerouac was the only surviving son of a French–Canadian family who moved to America in the
1920's. His father ran a print shop, but they often found themselves moving from house to house in
Lowell, Massachusetts where they lived. Where they moved depended on whether they were

Burroughs came from a well to do family in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to whom he would often turn

The idea of have multiple wives was very unusual and it was not common and hard grasp by many
of the characters. Just like the homosexual not being normal during the Beat Generation, the idea of
Alobar's open relationship was not normal to the reader. Robbins uses the strange sexuality from the

Ginsberg's work often represents a struggle for spiritual survival in a dehumanized, repressive
society. This can be seen in his writing of "Howl":

Many lines in Howl would have been considered obscene by the standards of his time, especially,
"who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy." (Howl)

trying to be a tough guy. The third verse simply describes that even if one chooses to walk away, it
is better to be alive than to risk it. The fourth verse in my opinion talks about the consequences of

World War two, young adults in particularly the east and west coasts of America where left in
questioning thought about their own government as if it was really trying to do what 's best for their
people. And in those upset minds a Beat Generation was born. A generation of tired young poets
eager to open the minds of others through their own thoughts and views. The most influential
figures during the Beat Generation where Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and William
Burroughs. And although their bold, expressive poetry led to great fame, this generation of poets
gained a new fan base of critics who thought their work was just a way to seek attention and was not

Allen Ginsberg, born 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, unknowingly found himself creating a new
generation of people when he was attending Columbia University and met Jack Kerouac and
William Burroughs. There they exchanged and shared common interests and later would become
prominent figures in the Beat Movement. Allen Ginsberg 's rise of fame didn't become apparent until

belt of marijuana for New York," The belief that Marijuana should not be illegal provoked them to
attempt to bring marijuana across the Mexican boarder. Certain Beats were arrested for the cause of

because although it would be nice to live completely outside of society it is very difficult. Because
they threw their watches off the roof they were forced to ask the time wherever they went in order to
