Tata Motors began manufacturing commercial vehicles in 1954 with a 15–year collaboration
agreement with Daimler Benz of Germany.
This partnership has led Tata Motors to not only become India‟s largest automobile company but also
India‟s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer; the world‟s top five manufactures of medium and
heavy trucks and the world‟s second largest medium and heavy bus manufacturer. Having just entered
the passenger vehicles market segment in 1991, Tata
Motors now ranks second in India‟s passenger vehicle market.
Tata has enjoyed the prestige of having developed Tata Ace, India‟s first indigenous light commercial
vehicle; Tata Safari, India‟s first sports utility vehicle; Tata Indica, India‟s first indigenously
manufactured passenger car; and the Nano, the world‟s least expensive car.

1.7 Distribution Network in Nestle India Ltd.
Nestle India Ltd. has its own distribution network, which comprises of 8 Mother godowns located in
different regions of the country. The products from the different godowns are transported to Carriage
and forwarding agent (1 in each state), from there it is transported to different distributor centers
usually 1 in every city, Modern Trade Distribution centers and Super stock list( usually 1 in every
city), from there it goes to different retailers, wholesalers and re–distributors to reach the end
customers.
All the Nestle Distribution points are equipped with their own transportation facilities, and products
are transported depending on the Golden Beat or Non Golden beat markets either twice in a week or
once in a week.

failure in gaining success [11]. Positioning car is very important and it should give positive impact for
the customers. NANO car should be promoted as "safe" alternative to attract two–wheeler customer.
And TATA Motors already started promoting it as "smart city car" instead of cheapest car to attract
urban customers. Its price, safety and car image should be collectively promoted to send a message to

During my time as Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET), I was exposed to best manufacturing practices

Two major results of policy changes during these years in two–wheeler industry were that the, weaker
players died out giving way to the new entrants and superior products and a sizeable increase in
number of brands entered the market that compelled the firms to compete on the basis of product
attributes. Finally, the two–¬wheeler industry in the country has been able to witness a proliferation of

In 2009a, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. was the leader in the passenger vehicle segment with 47% market
share (see Exhibit 2a and 2b for competitive landscape for passenger vehicles in India and segment
wise market share).3 This segment was expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of
14.5% in the period from 2009 to 2013.4 Bulk of this growth was expected in the passenger car
segment, especially the small car segment on the back of the reviving Indian economy and shifting
preference to fuel efficient and low maintenance cars. The UV and MPV segments were expected to

2008, the market saw the reveal of the Tata Nano, which was introduced as India's first low–priced
People's Car. The retail price was set at $2,500, catering to the mainly the low–income segment of the
market. (Profile, 2013).
During this time of economy unrest, consumers will be more cautious and controlled over the usage of
their disposable income, with preference for a lower–priced alternative. Even though being seen as a

Such poor performance worsened with cases of fire outbreaks. In 2010, a Nano was reported to have
caught fire moments after been driven out of the showroom. Even with such publicity of the fire
outbreaks, Tata Motors still blatantly insisted that the Nano design was faultless with a safe product
design. In reply to the fire outbreaks, Tata Motors provided optional safety upgrade features that were
complimentary to existing owners but they made it clear that this is only a value–added service and
emphasised that it was not a product recall.
Although Nana Motors claimed that the Nano is safe to use and without faults, the outbreaks of fire
were still frequently occurring and the total number of fire incidents reported went up to eight cases in
