The Aftermath Of World War II Essay
The aftermath of World War II in East Asia resulted in much more than the rebuilding of individual
governments or countries. The Second World War is still a major factor in diplomatic rifts between
East Asian Countries. The treaties signed to end the war could not erase decades of history central to
the current relationships between East Asian countries. Unfortunately, that is exactly what some
argue Japan is doing through government–approved revisions of history textbooks. The textbook
revision controversy in East Asia is multi–faceted and cannot be solely attributed to the aftermath of
the World War II, but it does illustrate the effect of the World War II on international relationships in
East Asia even still today. It's hard to imagine how a textbook could cause so much dispute. While
the international contention is based on the content of the government–suggested revisions, it is
important to understand the textbook revision history and process first. The basis of the current
textbook approval system in Japan dates back to pre–World War II. Post–war, the Japanese
government used this already–in–place system to "blot out passages that might offend the American
occupiers" (Masalski). During this time of American occupation post–war, the Supreme Court for
the Allied Powers enforced a system of yearly government review of textbooks in order to ensure

Of course, just acknowledging a corporate mission statement on a piece of paper will not be enough
in itself to alter the corporate culture, but there are examples of mission statements that have had a
significant impact on corporate culture, depending on the approach of the company. We will look at

The Nationalists had controlled the majority of both population and territory before the war, and
also possessed a superior military. With much of the nationalist party's well–trained troops lost early
in the war to Japan and in Burma, the communists were able to survive not only politically, but
physically as well; therefore, they had the manpower and support they needed to succeed in the civil

I Have Long Advocated For Social Equality
I have long advocated for social equality and been aware of the prevalence of racism. However, my
forethought now seems insignificant compared to the degree of racism that James W. Loewen
suggests is indoctrinating the minds and classrooms of America's youth. Loewen takes readers on an
enlightening journey through his book, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American
History Textbook Got Wrong, that intends to expose the false claims and lack of information in
standard American high school history textbooks. He aims to set the record straight on how and why
American history is so misrepresented and why it is important to represent history accurately and
not limitedly. Throughout the book, he largely focuses on the shortcomings or outright fallacies of
historical textbooks in regards to racism, government, colonialism, and patriotism. Loewen serves
this book to bring about institutional change where he feels that it is needed and to stress the
importance of factual historical information and realpolitik. He displays vast amounts of logical and
thoroughly descriptive anecdotes and facts, however, the scrambled organization of his topics, and
his clear devotion and passion for the theme of social justice and anti–racism present the problem of
bombardment. Furthermore, he does not appeal to his suggested audience in adequate rhetorical
manner that is consistent with his declared purpose of the book.

Jonathan D. Spence's The Gate of Heavenly Peace: The Chinese and Their Revolution is a work of
narrative history first published in 1981. The date of Spence's publication is important for
understanding the work: it was published only five years after the death of Mao Zedong. In a sense,
then, the book intends to be a history of revolution in China through the twentieth century,
culminating of course with Mao's revolution. But Spence's intention is to give the reader a more
intimate feeling for this time period, by concentrating specifically on the lives and writings of
various figures who may not have been central to the revolutionary movements per se, but who may
be understood by the reader as being in some way representative. Spence's examinations of the lives
of various Chinese writers from the turn of the twentieth century until the death of Mao Zedong
gives an impression of how life was actually lived during the time period when major historical
changes were taking place in China. But overall Spence also gives an accurate picture of the
difficulty of uniting China during the revolutions of the twentieth century in particular, it is
fascinating to see how the regional differences which have, at so many points, threatened to collapse
China into separate independent provinces, or to degenerate into regional competition that destroys
any concept of a united national entity, are played out within Spence's overall account. The basic

A change in governance structure can take place due to any variety of causes. While it is well known
that Japan was governed for centuries by the warrior class, it is not always known why. The samurai
rose to power over a long period of time. Following their eventual rise to the top of the Japanese
social ladder, they spent centuries consolidating their new power. There were a number of factors
that lead to the rise of the warrior class in the late Heian period, continuing until their the Meiji
Restoration. The samurai were able to rise to power for a number of reasons, including the

The Taira, however, stood out above the Minamoto by having a more favourable position with the
Emperors. The growing rivalry between the two families lead to an increasing tension between the
two. Despite both working for the Emperor, it was understood that if a war broke out: "one of these
two clans were to defeat the other, there would be nothing but tradition to stop the victor from
taking over all government authority,"3. This is, of course, what occurred during the Genpei War.
The Minamoto family, too, had a significant role in the growth of the samurai. After the defeat of
the Taira clan in the Genpei war, the Minamoto family, under its leader Yoritomo, founded the first
warrior government4. Their political rivals defeated, the Minamoto were in a position from which
they could shape their country; this was further justified by Prince Mochihito who gave them legal
authority5. The government – the Kamakura shogunate – that was created under the early rule of the
Minamoto "was based on a confederation of Eastern warriors,"6. In doing this, the Minamoto family
united the warrior class in some of the most developed parts of the country. Simultaneously, they
brought the warrior class to the forefront of authority and power in Japanese society. The
importance of the Taira family in the rise of the warrior class is somewhat limited, but absolutely

wounds would be left untreated, causing more serious illness. For example, there is a woman who
had been kicked hardly by a Japanese soldier that causes her arm broke, and it healed twists out of
shape. Although comfort women regularly got medical examinations for the purpose of preventing
sexual diseases, they could not get any further treatments for other health issues, such as broken
bones, injuries from repeated abuse, and sexual intercourse. For these reasons, Japan has caused
comfort women serious difficulties along with the miserable suffering from solemn physical
injuries. As for comfort women, they had psychological injuries as well, and among this issue, this
is more serious than it seems. Many comfort women lived horrific experiences for over five years in
comfort stations. Comfort women had seen many friends dying in front of them. They always had to
live with feelings of anger, shame, and fear; whereas, Japanese were. After World War Two, they
were literally abandoned, and they could not return to home. Comfort women had to survive by
themselves. These heartless memories have aggravated comfort women into depression, stress,

Buddha in the Land of Kami reviews Japan on a historical account. It revisits the story of the Kami
and elaborates on the country's uniqueness. Significant to Japanese culture, this film recognizes
Chinese culture as the primary influence on Japan formation. The film given categorizes as a
historical documentary that appears to be in the setting of Japan from the seventh and twelfth
centuries. Although World History; Culture, States and Societies, explore a different time frame
(500 B.C.E– Seventh century), there are still many similarities as compared to the documentary;
such as the importance of the Kami, and the role Chinese culture play on the development of Japan.
Shintoism: The Way of the Kami. Israel defines Kami as spirits that affiliate with natural objects
such as the sun and the moon. In the opening of Buddha in the Land of the Kami, the narrator shares
the historical background of the Kami, stating that a spiritual duo came down to Earth to stir up the
sea waters, creating the archipelago of Japan. The sprits figure out reproduction and multiply,
inhabiting the chain of Islands known as Japan. The narrators also mention the Kami in mountains,

His views concerning a science of sociology are elaborated in two major works, Descriptive
Sociology (published in 17 volumes, 1873–1934) and The Study of Sociology (1873).
Spencer was particularly influential in the United States until the turn of the century. According to
William Graham Sumner, who used The Study of Sociology as a text in the first sociology course
offered in an American university, it was Spencer's work which established sociology as a separate,
legitimate field in its own right. Spencer's demand that historians present the "natural history of
society," in order to furnish data for a comparative sociology, is also credited with inspiring James
Harvey Robinson and the others involved in the writing of the New History in the United States.
Economic Theories
Social philosophy in the latter part of the 19th century in the United States was dominated by
Spencer. His ideas of laissez–faire and the survival of the fittest by natural selection fitted very well
into an age of rapid expansion and ruthless business competition. Spencer provided businessmen
with the reassuring notion that what they were doing was not just ruthless self–interest but was a

While not being the original point of the historic March on Washington which took place in 1963,
Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech as well as his presence in the movement against racist oppression
played a major role in the ending of racial prejudice and gave life to the beginning of racial equality.
His speech tackled the biggest problem within society head on and the march, consisting of whites,
blacks, and members of many different ethnic groups displayed a society that was ready for change.
The march itself consisted of roughly 200,000 to 300,000 Americans united on a front they never

The March on Washington which took place on August 28, 1963 was executed by a group of
Americans crying out for equality within society. While highlighted by and often thought of as the
day MLK delivered his "I Have a Dream Speech", the march pushed for far more than just a place
where "little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and girls as
sisters and brothers" (King Jr.), it called for equality among all races. A big issue of concern during
the march was voting rights. While MLK discussed equal rights and a movement towards an
America without segregation, a big issue presented and supported by those marching was changing
the 24th Amendment to abolish the poll tax, a tax which was aimed to discourage African–
Americans from voting due to their lower incomes at the time. This low income was set into place
due to racial prejudice in the work place, largely due to the Jim Crow Laws. These laws and
different tactics like lynching were used to oppress the African American population during this
time period. As stated in the textbook, "In the nation as a whole in the 1890s, there was an average
of 187 lynchings each year, more than 80 percent of them in the South." (Brinkley 375). Even
though this was nearly 70 years prior to the March on Washington, these events shaped a
fundamental racial injustice in which many Americans believed, being born into families where

The nature of industrialisation in the 1930s
The nature of industrialisation changed in the 1930s. In the 1920s industrialisation had occurred
because of free enterprise and big business. But with the onset of the Depression, industrial output
fell dramatically. (statistics needed). To combat this, the federal government adopted a role of
directly stimulating industrial growth. The Public Works Administration (PWA) instituted in began
many large industrial projects with the aim of spurring the economy and providing many jobs. The
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was a federal project to energise the economy through a massive
industrial scheme sponsored by the federal government. Twenty five dams were built to reshape the
land and generate hydro–electricity, which could further contribute to industrial growth. Another
example of government leadership of industry was the National Recovery Administration (NRA),
which attempted to foster industrial growth through the creation of 'codes' for each industry. These
federal programs fundamentally changed the nature of industrialisation. In the 1930s, the
government's approach to industrialisation was more akin to socialist–state–style industrialisation

The Chinese Communist Party
Setting the Scene: China had experienced a turbulent century prior to the Communist Party taking
power. It has a long Confucius heritage but was plagued by foreign imperialism, weak governments,
Japanese invasion and civil war until 1949. Mao and the Communist Party sought to transform
China into a Communist society following the ideology of Marxist–Leninism. They established
measures to transform China into a totalitarian state. This required the Communist Party to have
complete power and control over the population. I am researching how the Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) gained this power and control during their first decade in charge. This question is very
significant to understanding change in Modern China. Historians Points of View Historians have
different views on how the CCP exerted power and control over the population. Many writers
between 1955–2000 including William Hinton, an American writer on China argue that China had
been so damaged by the Japanese and the Civil War that the people just welcomed peace. They
welcomed the Communist victory as a return the country to order and many looked forward to more
fairness in how things were done after the corruption of the past. Therefore he concludes that
initially most people cooperated willingly with Communist rule. Jung Chang and Jon Halliday–
Author Jung Chang and Jon Halliday do not accept the uncompromising justifications for Mao's rise

An individual who was developed from the black power movements, was Richard Aoki, a third
generation Japanese American. He had spent time living in the internment camps as a child during
the second world war. When he grew up, he became one of the founding members of the Black
Panther Party, and the only Asian American to have held a formal leadership position as "Field
Marshall". He worked in the Black Panther party by arming them with weapons and training them in

teachers and administrators hired into the school systems, smaller class sizes, better facilities, and a
revision of the textbooks to include the history of Mexican Americans. This began with the outrage
towards Mexican Americans having the greatest number of high school dropout rates, and lowest
number of college attendance out of all the ethnic groups. The poor facilities and constant
undermining of the Mexican American students in the classroom environments by teachers, created
an atmosphere that was hostile to learning. These oppressive conditions, along with the inability to
create changes to better the students' conditions, compelled students, activists and teachers to
collaborate in an effort to attain an equal footing in the world of education. Utilizing examples from
the African American Civil Rights Movement, such as boycotts and walkouts, these people decided
the fastest method to making better conditions was to first make the dilemma public in order to
pressure the school board into complying with their terms for educational reform. When their needs
were not met, the students took part in walkouts which were referred to as "Blowouts."

Introduction The colonization of Korea under Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945 was one of
controversial histories as it shaped Korean society in both positive and negative ways. This paper
examines Korea's colonial relationship with Japan. In this paper, I argue the Japanese influence of
modernity was a positive gain to Korean society by referring to some examples. First of all, this
paper shows a brief history of the colonization from 1910 to 1945 to explain what was going on
during that period. Secondly, this paper discusses economic development in Korea society as a
positive effect because Japanese economic policy had an important role in the economy of the
colony. Thirdly, this paper analyzes three types of authority through new political system which
were created by Japanese in Korea. At the same time, this paper shows local autonomy which was

a certain diseases, they were either faced quarantine, a time isolation to prevent spread of a disease

conditions. These factors have often contributed to the result of significant political, economic, and
social impacts. There are the differences between a political and nonpolitical revolution. A political
revolution is when a sudden alteration within the government is placed, or the form of government
is reorganized, however, property relations are left alone. A non political revolution is an overthrow
and attempt to replace an established government or political system by the people governed. Karl
marx was a revolutionary leader in the russian revolution. He had an idea of communism that would
result in the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer which was no good in the long run.

What are the causal relationships among these three trends? The second perspective, technological
determinism, contends that the shrinkage of time and space has been so dramatic and so pervasive
that there is essentially nothing that can be done to stop it. According to this view, technological
changes have propelled international economic activity, and governments have been largely
irrelevant. Thus, policy liberalization should be understood as governments' acknowledging the
futility of trying to resist globalization, rather than acting as a prime mover behind market

The case for a technologically determined view of globalization is far stronger with respect to

The beginnings and ends of what we choose to call centuries are almost invariably years of little
significance. But there is little agreement over when the twentieth century c.e. arrived, and there
were several points both before the year 2000 (the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of
Germany, the surge of globalization from the mid–1990s) and afterward (9/11, or the global
recession of 2008) when one could quite plausibly argue that a new era had begun. A compelling
case can be made for viewing the decades of the global scramble for colonies after 1870 as a
predictable culmination of the long nineteenth century, which was ushered in by the industrial and
political revolutions of the late 1700s. But at the same time, without serious attention to the
processes and misguided policies that led to decades of agrarian and industrial depression from the
late 1860s to the 1890s, as well as the social tensions and political rivalries that generated and were
in turn fed by imperialist expansionism, one cannot begin to comprehend the causes and

and North Korea in particular, though, and some observers suggest that nothing will ever be truly
normal until "Japan comes clean" about its past. To determine the facts, this paper provides a review
of the relevant peer–reviewed literature concerning these issues to identify the main issues of
interest and contention, and how the respective sides concerned have historically dealt with them. A
summary of the research and important findings are presented in the conclusion.

After long term trade agreements and Chinese economic reform, bilateral trade rapidly increased.
This is also known as the "golden age" of Sino– Japanese relations, as they made significant
progress during the 70's and 80's. But a lot of these visits and treaties were mostly for show, and
today, we realize that although it seemed like the two countries were finally starting to cooperate
with each other, there were still many problems surrounding Sino–Japanese relations. Because of
this purely economic relationship, China and Japan's economies have become closely intertwined.
They are almost completely dependent on each other economically, and wouldn't be the powerful
countries that they are today without each other. As I said before, China never would have
developed so quickly if it weren't for the early investments and trade from Japan. On the other hand,
after Japan's economic bubble popped in the 90's, many investors needed to find new places to
