Influential Softball Coach
I met a life changing individual in middle school. We referred to him as "Mr. D". He was my seventh and eighth grade English teacher. I sat in his
class and dozed off during his grammar lectures. He often sparked my attention with jokes, sports scores, stories from literature books. However, the
majority of Mr. D's classes were not overly exciting or stellar in anyway.
In the spring of my seventh eighth grade year I decided to branch out and try a new sport. I signed up for our school's softball team. A new coach
was going to be taking on the difficult task of teaching the love of the game to a group of girls. The coach was going to be my English teacher. Mr. D

It was a very unfamiliar place for me. I did not handle the situation well. I was extremely upset with him. The next day I wrote him a letter
apologizing for my actions and lack of heart. He wrote me back explaining that sometimes things happen in sports as well as life that we do not
necessarily agree with or like but they may be for the good of the majority of the people. I slowly realized Mr. D and I had many things in common.
We both loved people, new experiences, family, church, and most importantly the cultured game of soccer.
One day at my school's mass Mr. D volunteered to tell a story that related the gospel and homily. For the first time in a formal setting he had caught
my attention right away. He faced the congregation and told his inspiring story. A baby and his mother boarded a flight one day. Bad luck came their
way and the plane crashed. The pilot was the only survivor. As the pilot was exiting the plane eagerly trying to save himself, heheard a cry from the
passenger area of the plane. He managed to find his way to a little baby boy crying in the hands of his mother. The baby had survived by the help of
that kind pilot. That miracle baby was my middle school teacher and softball coach. Mr. D's lost his mother that day, but due to the kindness of

In some countries throughout the world kids are put on tracks dependent upon their careers; some get to go further in the education system than others.
Often times these career tracks are ones chosen for them based upon the family they were born into and their parents wealth and educational
knowledge. Some countries even do inventory tests in order to place students on a track and decide if they get to continue in education or if they are

Some disagree with inclusion, thinking that by including children with special needs in a classroom we are going to have to lower the educational
standards for the entire classroom. This is just not the case. If inclusion is done right it will increase student's learning– all students, not just the
students with special needs. There are about 11% of students across the United States on Individual Education Plans (IEP) qualifying them for special
education. Inclusion is an extremely broad topic, so a bit of background on the programs and have they use inclusion in the middle school where I am
working may help to understand. We have four different special education programs; a Developmental Leaning Center (DLC), an Educational
Resource Classroom (ERC), Learning Resource Classroom (LRC), and an Emotional Growth Classroom (EGC). Each of these programs caters to

is Free the Children. The short form used to identify it is FTC. The purpose of the NGO is to free children from poverty, exploitation, and the notion
that they are powerless to effect change. The co–founders are Craig Kielburg and Marc Kielburg. It was founded in Thornhill, Ontario in 1995. The

The Current Problem in Haiti
A current problem in Haiti that Free The Children is focusing on is education. Following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that destroyed Haiti on January
12th, 2010; hundreds of school buildings were destroyed and the education system was left wrecked. This is affecting society because currently Haiti's
literacy rate is 62% and only less than half of the country's children attend school. About 37% of students actually reach the sixth grade out of the 60%
of the students that enroll. Free The Children is currently working in an area where 90% of the schools built are built by community–based,
non–governmental, and/or religious organizations that are trying to rebuild the education system.

The schools from poorer towns and cities do not have the financial assets available to them to hire the kind of teachers that schools with more
money have the capability to employ. The resources available to an urban, lower income school are to be equal to those available to a suburban,

On Monday, October 17th I volunteered to help the American Red Cross and other organizations at Purnell Swett High School. I was directed to a
woman named Priscilla who oversaw a portion of the outdoor area. Our group was quite diverse. It consisted of young high school and college
students, middle–aged parents, some senior citizens, and even a girl who appeared to be no more than nine years old. Everyone was in good spirits
despite the recent tragedy. Our task seemed to be simple enough, however, we would soon discover it was going to take more planning. We were
assigned to the rear of the school where we would sort through various bags and boxes of donations. Priscilla directed some of us to carry items to
different rooms based on their size and whether the clothes were designed more males or females, children or adults. As organized piles began to
form, these volunteers posted signs indicating the sizes in those piles. Priscilla asked a different group to take the flat boxes and fold and tape them to
allow packing of the clothes. Another set of people were instructed to write the names of the recipients on the boxes. The final group, which later
consisted of those who completed their share of the work already, was assigned to fill the boxes with appropriate items and seal them for delivery.
Thanks to the strong leadership skills of Priscilla and the tireless efforts of the volunteers, we were successful! She was wise to divide our large group
into smaller substations.

As organized piles began to form, these volunteers posted signs indicating the sizes in those piles. Priscilla asked a different group to take the flat boxes and fold and tape them to allow packing of the clothes. Another set of people were instructed to write the names of the recipients on the boxes. The final group, which later consisted of those who completed their share of the work already, was assigned to fill the boxes with appropriate items and seal them for delivery.
