Calsta Newsletter Q1 2015
1. Milestones for February 2015
I am pleased to announce Calsta have established a
dedicated presence in Mackay, Queensland!
Kai Tolson joined our Calsta team in January 2015, and
has spent time with us at our Perth Office undergoing our
on boarding process this month. Kai will be responsible
for delivering and growing the Calsta footprint for our
usual services in Queensland and Papua New Guinea,
and is ably supported by our expanded Calsta team. Kai
will be introducing himself to our past, current and future
clients over time and will be able to provide greater
background on his experience face to face. We have
included Kai’s biography a little further in this newsletter
FYI.
I am also pleased to announce that since our last
newsletter, Calsta passed the milestone of five years
without a recordable injury. We are very proud of this
achievement, as we have performed work across remote
mining operations in Australia, Zambia, Papua New
Guinea and travelled to some exotic locations in China,
Europe and the USA on business. I would like to thank all
of our staff for their continued focus and doing what we
say we will at all times. Some core principles of how we
have achieved this are:
We foster a culture where there is “Zero
Tolerance” of unsafe acts.
All Calsta personnel are responsible for the safety of
themselves and those they interact with.
We think before we act.
Let’s all focus on achieving a safe and prosperous 2015
and helping others do the same.

Holistic Improvement - Mobile Maintenance Function
Calsta are currently engaged to provide interim senior line management at a remote mine site in Western
Australia with the key focus being to drive performance improvement. This program is being run in conjunction
with the clients corporate support team to improve work execution, planning and scheduling, logistics, discreet
project delivery and machine improvement programs. Since early December we have together with our clients’
team, improved maintenance outcomes being delivered on-site in terms of machine performance and reliability.

Condition Based Maintenance
I like to believe that things can always be done
better. One way to improve traditional
maintenance techniques and become a proactive
maintenance department is through Condition
Based Maintenance (CBM).
CBM describes a proactive method of performing
maintenance after one or more indicators show
the equipment is going to fail, or performance has
begun to deteriorate. Tools to track the trending
condition of equipment range from traditional
methods such as, oil analysis, vibration analysis
or built in system health monitors to newer
technologies like Infrared Thermography (IRT).
Rigorous co-ordinated use of these tools can
dramatically reduce operating costs by reducing
maintenance interactions, and ensuring all
components reach scheduled life or even
extended lives. Additional benefits of CBM range
from increased reliability, increased safety,
greater compliance to plan and effective balance
sheet management. The US Department of
Defence policy on CBM states “implemented to
improve maintenance agility and responsiveness,
increase operational availability, and reduce life
cycle total ownership costs”. We at Calsta
definitely subscribe to this view.
Please call me if you would like to discuss how
CBM can be used in conjunction with your current
maintenance systems.
