Why is Universal Design important?
Although the “average” student is who teachers have
focused on in the past, modern classrooms are filled
with diverse learners that require accommodations.
Universal Design eliminates the need to plan
alternative lessons for exceptional students because
following Universal Design, all materials are
engineered to be accessible by all students.

We all have unique needs and learning profiles. By
creating materials that use Universal
Design, students with different types of intelligence

What is the teacher’s role?
The teacher spends time getting to know his/her class.
Based on these observations, the teacher develops
lessons and materials that are appropriate and in
concordance with each student’s preferences and
needs. Then, it is the teacher’s job to facilitate the
lesson so that each student is able to ask questions.
The teacher also should monitor the students’
responses to the lesson so that he/she can make the
necessary adaptations.
