WHAT IS A VOCATION?
Vocation is a calling to serve others; a teaching beyond knowledge and skills and a
revival of one’s character, values, and attitudes. A Vocation needs Caring and Commitment to
serve in one’s career or profession. It is also displaying kindness and concern for others. It is
beyond life, meaning and purpose.
DISTINGUISH VOCATION FROM A VISION AND FROM A PROFESSION
Vocational calling is usually stable and permanent over a lifetime. Discovering our
vocation is possible because it is based on giftedness, interests, passions, and human need,
which are all easy to identify.(Whelchel,H., 2012)
Frederick Buechner (1993) described vocation by saying, “the place God calls you to is
the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” This means that
vocation is an ordained mission from which a vision to help humanity is the main purpose of
God in giving the gifts to the persons having it/them while a profession is willfully gained by an

individual who wants to serve for his own life’s existence. The difference lies in one’s volunteer
action to serve. Calling in word "call" means in Latin “voca”) Hence a person may be a
professional is being called in a vocation. Either voluntary or not, idiosyncratic to
different religions, may come from another person, from a divine messenger, or from within
oneself.
A career should be based on the opportunities for service which are presented to a
believer enabling him or her to fulfill their vocation. Finding the right occupation at any one time
is a matter of God’s specific leadership, guidance, and provision. Solomon wrote, “A man can
do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his work. This too, I see, is
from the hand of God, for without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25).
HOW DO WE KNOW THAT WE ARE CALLED TO SERVE IN A TEACHING VOCATION?
Vocational calling stays the same as we move in and out of different jobs and careers.
Our vocation is directly related to the discovery of our God-given talents. Over time we develop
and hone them into useful competencies for the glory of God and the service of others, often in
various jobs and occupations.
WHAT DOES IT MEANT TO HAVE A VISION?
Vision came from the Latin word “vidēre” which means “to see”. We use our eyes in
inferring meanings. The creative mind has the ability interpret meanings and life through the use
of the senses but the primary one is the eyesight. One can experience seeing someone or
something in a dream or trance, or as a supernatural apparition. That is a kind of wisdom from
God, a gift that a person should “give away” for others in order to glorify God.
Example of quote: “the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness
and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth
that he may strongly support those whose hearts are completely
His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will
surely have wars.(2 chronicles 16: 9
TEACHING PROFESSION
Profession is the specialized application of skills knowledge, and attributes designed to
provide unique service to meet educational needs of the individual and of society. It is a career,
an occupation or a job. A business or line of work where there is payoff. Teaching profession
is the oldest profession in the world. Jesus was a great teacher. The term is derived from the
Latin word “profiteor” which means to profess. The connotation here is that a professional is a
person who possesses knowledge of something and has a commitment to a particular set of
values both of which are generally well accepted characteristics of professions.
Examples of Professions: Medical Doctors, Engineers, Pilots, Architects,
Registered Nurses, Medical Technologists, Pharmacists, Physical Therapists,
Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Guidance Counselors, Teachers, Certified Public
Accountants, Realtors, Professional Drivers, Pathologists, Gynecologists, Cardiologists,

QUALIFICATIONS FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHER
Teaching is one of the few jobs that you can draw only if you went to college; took and
passed your licensure examination for teachers. You are not called a Professional Teacher
unless you passed this rigid examination that ideal teachers should possess. Suggesting the
job of a professional Teacher also requires some amount of proper training and higher
education.
REQUIREMENTS OF A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER
1. A teacher must not only be a master of the material but also an effective communicator, quick
problem solver, constant innovator, social organizer, occasional therapist, and much more
besides.
2. It takes energy, ingenuity, insight, knowledge, and most of all, patience to lead a classroom
full of kids.
3. You must decide if you want 80 percent of your students to understand the 100 percent of the
material, or 100 percent to understand 80 percent. This indicates the teacher’s expertise in
mathematical computation and evaluation.
4. Sometimes you end up with zero percent understanding zero percent and you must go back
to the blackboard and start all over again which needs patience and perseverance.
5. Teaching has been described as one part preparation and five parts improvisation, and the
preparation alone will take hours which indicates creativity and flexibility.
LIST OF QUOTES FOR REFLECTION
1. “they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads”.
2. “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased.”
3. “It takes a big heart to help shape little minds.”
4. “Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning.”
5. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
6. “The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just
