Parenting Styles Vs Parenting
When it come to raising kids people will never know how to do it correctly. The child will still
throw tantrums, the teen will still give attitude, and the young adult will insists on going to a 4 year
university. All children hit these milestones no matter what kind of parents they have. There are
many ways to raise a child. Every person has a way of doing things that they deem right. Looking
deeper in the process of raising a child or teen will reveal so much. "...keep in mind that every
parent child relationship is different, so there is not one sure fire way to go about parenting."(
Rachel Telles, and Bianca Mgbemere.) Parenting is put into 4 general categories. Authoritarian,
permissive, neglectful and authoritative. People fall into these categories, but there are a select few
that don't. The two drastically different ones will be compared and contrasted. When it comes to
parenting trying to find that happy medium between Authoritarian and permissive is the best
possible thing to do for both parent and child.
Each parenting style can drastically alter a child's mood, behavior, actions, and relationships. They
also have positive and negative side effects and depending on how harsh they are implemented it
could have serious effects on a developing child. It is up to the parents to figure out together how
they would want their child raised. Alison Poulsen argues " Often, one spouse allows the other to do
all the parenting or to determine the style of parenting because

I think so many factors influence parenting. I would like to start this off with one of the most
important factors I think that influence parenting, and that is having a child unplanned and not being
ready for it versus planning for a child and being ready for it.
I am a little old fashioned when it comes to certain things and especially when I think of how I
would raise my child. I do not have one, and I am a lesbian. I am not sure when I will have one, but
I want to with a potential partner, hopefully she can carry or we can adopt as well. When I say I am
a little old fashioned I guess I am referring to how I would raise my child. When I see the way my

It's the parent's job to stay on top of things like that, so the children don't end up watching anything
bad. I also think some children play electronics too much, there is nothing wrong with them playing
it by all means, but I think some parents stick them on it so they don't have to deal with them.
Another big issue is many parents get mad at their children because when it's during the school
season, some young children don't like to do homework. When I was younger my dad taught me my
alphabets, math, emergency numbers, and address at a very young age. My dad always bought me
coloring books, pencils, and papers to keep me busy. We had a Nintendo system, but I barely used it.
Even though my parents didn't speak English or learn the things I did in school they would still try
their best to help me or find me help. People cannot expect for their children to love studying and
working with school materials if you don't support them and work with them. When I have my
child, I plan to paint and color with them all the time. It's so important to be active with children
especially when they are young and their brains are developing.
Communication and patience is the key with children. Also the right amount of emotion and love is
very important. I know raising children is not easy that's why it's not meant for everyone. And
planning ahead I think makes a huge difference. My friends tell me when I talk about what I would
do with my kid they tell me

Parenting Styles
Parenting styles depends based on caregiver traits and the personalities of the children. Culture is
also a factor that has an effect on the type of parenting skills towards their children. Diana Baumrind
acknowledged three parenting styles, along with a fourth that was incorporated later. The first style
of caregiving is Authoritarian. In authoritarian parenting, it does not matter what the child say, what
the parent says is final. If the child does not corporate, strict punishment is delivered. In a better
understanding, parents set down clear rules and hold high standards [1]. They do not expect their
children to propose opinions, or talk about emotions. Parents usually do not show affection even
though they do love their child. The second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She set goals for me while I was in elementary school, such as my grades. She always wanted me to
have at least a 3.0 or high, but if I did not reach that goal, she would still encourage me to do better
next time. Once I got into high school, it became a different story. I had a harder time pulling the
grades she wanted. Every year was different. My freshmen year was a 3.0, sophomore year was 3.2
and so on. I was only able to pull 3.2s, which was frustrating to me, but my mother still accepted it
as long as I did not get anything lower than a 3.0. However, I also was a huge liar throughout my
life. It was a lot worse when I was younger. She knew every single time I lied, and I always got my
electronics taken away. It would either be my Gameboy, or iPod (though, getting older it became my
phone and my PS3). Every lie had a consequence, which was completely understandable (you
would think I would have stopped right?). Of course I went through the "I hate you" phase, for
"taking my things away," even though I never meant it. Now that I am 21 years old, I could not have
been anymore thankful for all the discipline and the somewhat high expectations for grades, because
it made me the person I am today. I can admit I do still lie a little about a few things, but I am
nowhere near how bad I was when I was

Parenting Styles And Styles Of Parenting
Parenting Styles My term paper will discuss the 4 Styles of Parenting, including; the styles of
parenting that we as single parents and couple parents may identify with. My paper will also discuss
how each parenting styles impacts our children, if it works and the style of parenting that's most
effective. Authoritative Parenting Style The Authoritative Style of Parenting, children are expected
to follow the rules and guidelines that a parent with this style of parenting has put into place. This
type of parents are responsive to their children and willing (eager) to listen to questions.
Authoritative parents gives reasonable demands, consistent limits, expresses warmth and affection
which every child, I think, yearns for. Rules are set and reasons behind the rules are explain to
ensure that the child (ren) understands. They're also willing to listen to the child's feelings when
setting these limits. Parents with this style of parenting are flexible and willing to bend the rules in
certain cases– for example, allowing the child to stay up an hour pass the normal bedtime, so that
the child can finish watching television. When a child (ren) fail to meet the expectations that an
Authoritative Parent is more of a nurturing and forgiving parent rather than punishing. These types
of parents uses rewards, praises, and positive consequences for good behaviors. Baurmind (1971,

The children can become rebellious, if the parents are just strict but do not allow much or high
expectations or do not guide their children, the children may not learn right from wrong themselves.
The child may simply just behave when parents are around. Some strict parents are not open to ideas
and forget to communicate with their children. Which give their children communication problems.
The child will feel less confident and more insecure. The feelings of the child won't be expressed
because he may believe his feelings will be criticized or punished. The children will need someone
to confide in and the parent may not be available for this role. "Studies of Spanish and Brazilian
adolescents have reported that teens from authoritarian homes had lower self
esteem than did teens
from authoritative or permissive families
(Martinez and Garcia 2007; Martinez and Garcia 2008)." Secrets and lies manifest within the
relationship between the child and parent. When children are under the pressure of strict rules, they
learn how to avoid punishment through lies and deceit. This leads to lying about places they are
going and friends they hang out with and also activities they do. Sometimes the child in a strict
household does not learn to make responsible situations because the decision was always made for
them. This can lead to dangerous outcomes and wrongful

Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children
Over the years studies have found patterns in parenting styles and their effects on children.
"Parenting isn't only a collection of skills, rules, and tricks of the trade (Lloyd, Carol. 2012)", it
defines who you become, reflects your culture and represents values important in a family.
Parenting style has a long term impact on a child's development, success and outlook on life. The
three styles of parenting are permissive parenting/hands–off parenting , authoritarian parenting,
authoritative parenting .Studies revealed that the authoritative parenting style results in the highest
success rates for their children in school and in social aspects, thus creating a stable child (Lloyd,
Carol.2012). Parenting styles were first introduced in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The permissive parent acts in a very easy going or hands off manner. There are very few demands
and/ or rules that are expected of the child. The permissive parent is more of a friend than a parent.
That, being said, could be seen as a positive or negative. Being too easy going for a child could
create boundary issues of authority. The child might not understand the concept of being humble or
respecting authority when necessary. This can create behavioral issues. "She presents herself to the
child as a resource for him to use as he wishes, neither as an ideal for him to emulate, nor as an
active agent responsible for shaping or altering his ongoing or future behavior. She allows the child
to regulate his own activities as much as possible, avoids the exercise of control, and does not
encourage him to obey externally defined standards (K. H.Grobman, 2008)" The authoritarian is the
most demanding and least engaged. They command the child to obey, but do not use effective
methods to get the child to understand why they must do what they are told. The authoritarian sees
the child as an easily manipulated and neutral being (KH Grobman 2008). They expect the child's
understanding of authority and maturity at a very early age and improperly enforce rules on the
child. Due to the high demand–low reward method, used by the authoritarian, the child values

Four Parenting Styles
So what exactly does a united front mean? We hear it often from parenting experts on TV, the
Internet, and in magazines, but do parents really understand it in practice? Everyone has a different
style of parenting, and a united front means to join your parenting together so that children can not
play the divide and conquer game (which they are extremely good at). Research has indicated that
there are four basic parenting styles ranging from only fulfilling a child's basic needs for food,
shelter, and schooling to those that expect complete obedience with no explanation or conversation.
Of course each family has a unique blend of these four basic parenting styles. Experts agree that no
matter which parenting style each parent has, finding a way to combine them that is consistent will
produce the most capable and successful children. Parenting disagreements are one of the major
causes of marital problems. So for the sake of your relationship with your spouse and to help make
your children successful, happy adults you must learn to co–parent. Our parenting styles come

Keeping rules and consequences basically the same is what you should aim for in co–parenting.
Parents must sit down together and decide what rules there will be and the consequences for
breaking those rules. Remember that this is not about winning. Establishing a parenting plan is
about your relationship with each other and raising intelligent, well–adjusted children able to
support themselves and live a happy life. Compromise is essential. For instance, one parent thinks
the children should be in bed at 8pm. and the other believes the children will be fine going to bed at
10pm. Negotiating a bedtime around 9pm. is a quality compromise. If after staying up until 9pm. the
children seem to be too tired throughout the day, talk about it

The Effects Of Parenting Styles On Children
As the social, emotional, and academic effects vary in children and adolescent, the choice of
parenting style should be an informed decision to ensure their individual needs are met. Some
children raised in dramatically different environments can later grow up to have very similar
personalities. Conversely, children who are raised in the same environment can grow up to have
opposite personalities. Despite these inconsistencies, researchers have found a direct correlation
between parenting styles and the effects these styles have on children. Research has identified four
main parenting styles based on two aspects of parenting behavior, control, and warmth. When these
two aspects of parenting behavior merge, four primary parenting styles occur, authoritative,
authoritarian and permissive. Authoritarian parenting provides strict parental control with little to no
warmth. Authoritative parenting provides intermediate control and warmth, and permissive
parenting provides little parental control and considerable warmth. Each of these parenting styles

Children with Autism, for instance, may exhibit symptoms that can range from the avoidance of eye
contact and an intolerance of changes in routine to self– injury and aggression. Thus, the best
parenting styles for the child can vary by severity of the impairment. While authoritative parenting
has shown to increase academic achievement, and alleviate attachment disorders in those with
disorders such as non–clinical autism (Rutgers), this may not be a viable option for children with
more severe symptoms. In cases like these, the need concern for physical safety may override the
need to academic success. Unfortunately, due to the complexities of these illnesses, there is just no

Parenting Styles : A Parenting Style And Made A New System...
Parents are the major people who affect their children's lives. They raise their children and teach
them the rules of life by using a specific parenting style. A parenting style is a psychological concept
based on regular strategies that parents use while raising their children. Parenting is a complicated
occupation that requires many different skills that work in concert to influence a child's behavior.
Parental responsibilities start after the birth of the first child, and they impact the child's overall life.
Parents usually develop their parenting styles based on their cultures. This situation happened
because culture influences families' lives including the way parents socialize their children. At this
point, behaviors and actions that are appropriate in one culture might be inappropriate in another
culture. Parenting Styles Diane Baumrind was the first one who defined authoritative parenting style
and made a new system for classifying parents. Depending on Diana Baumrind 's theory (1991)
about parenting, she identifies three distinctive parenting styles that cover different parenting
techniques worldwide. She named them authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Authoritarian
parents participate in interactions with their children characterized by low warmth and utilize a strict
and harsh discipline style. Authoritative parents participate in interactions with their children
characterized by high warmth and utilize non–punitive discipline in which they share

Parenting And Strict Parenting Style
Every single parent around the world has their own parenting style and techniques, but there are two
common base types of parenting anywhere in the world, strict and lenient. Strict parents tend to be
more demanding of their children, while a lenient parent will be more flexible. Which parenting
style is more appropriate for children? I believe there's no right answer to this question. A lack of
strict parenting can lead children to be more irresponsible or indifferent about life choices and
matters regarding their education. A lenient parent can raise a joyful child, but if leniency is too
consistent it can eventually shape a misbehaved or spoiled child, or in the worst scenario, a juvenile
delinquent. Some folks will argue that either way must be picked to raise a child. I believe
otherwise, there should be a with an equilibrium of both parenting styles regardless of their
ethnicity. Any child could be successful without the deprivation of common joyful activities that
children should experience at their age.
Firstly, some parenting styles will prevent children to enjoy from common childhood activities in
order to solely focus on school and extracurricular activities. They would prohibit children to have
playdates, play computer games, watch TV, etc. These parents will prevent the goods of childhood,
they believe that being completely strict will raise a successful child in the future. However, I
believe children shouldn't be deprived for common childhood activities to satisfy those qualities.
For instance, according to Powell's article where he describes his parenting style towards his
daughter, "She goes out to play with the kids in our neighborhood. And she watches movies. In fact,
one of the reasons Abby's English is so good is that she spends time watching The Lion King and
Toy Story. That's more freedom than Chua's kids were allowed, according to her book." Powell
believes that his child can be able to do well in school without the need of depriving his child from
things children do at their age such as watching movies. On the other hand, Chua's remarked about
her daughters that, "Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters,
Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to

Parenting Styles Essay
In this day in age there are various approaches to raising children. Each parent(s) must decide for
them selves which style best fits their beliefs and abilities. Many parents come to the conclusion that
they will try their best and just hope that their children learn right from wrong and the abilities they
need to succeed in life. However, what most parents do not always realize is that the style of
parenting they are using may have a bigger impact on their child than they are aware of. For the
sake of these parents and their sanity, as well as the children's, I have classified these styles of
parenting into categories. According to an article written by two psychologist from Vanderbilt
University, Bianca Mgbemere and Rachel Telles, there are four major recognized parenting styles in
psychology today: authoritative, neglectful, permissive and authoritarian. Every relationship
between parent and child is different so there is no right or wrong way to raise a child. (Mgbemere
and Telles) These are just categories to help give an idea as to what your parenting style may be.
Authoritative Parenting: This style is the most common and widely used style of parenting for
parents with children that are "normal." These parents can be easy to recognize as they are the
parents that set standards for their children but counter act them with their ability to be
understanding and supportive. This is the style of parenting my own parents raised me on, as many
other parents do.

Parenting children is probably the most important, difficult, and thankless job in existence. I should
know, I am the father of two girls; one is 27 years old and the other is 25, and now a grandfather as
well. I have heard many people say things like: "I raise my kids the way I my parents raised me"
(while complaining about the things that their parents' did), "I am doing the best that I can" (then
learn to do better), and "children should be seen and not heard" (This was my father's favorite).
Nobody seems to know the perfect way to raise children; is there a perfect way?

At first, I had a lot of fun; I enjoyed the exercise, practice, and discipline, at least for the first hour.
Because I showed early skill, my father forced me to continue into the second and third hour on a
daily basis, very much like Chua did with her own children. I eventually became very good at it; but
2–3 hours of daily exercise and boxing in the ring soon became tedious and was no longer fun. In
her article, Chua says "what Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you're good at
it." Unlike Chua's children, who learned to enjoy the violin and piano as their skills increased, I did
not; I learned to hate the entire sport of boxing, and to this day will not even watch it. It was not all
bad though, I learned discipline and tenacity from that experience (and how to avoid a punch). My
father used combination of authoritarian, authoritative, and sometimes uninvolved parenting styles.
It was common to hear phrases like "because I said so", "you live in my house, you obey my rules",
or "children should be seen and not heard (and preferably not seen)" from him. However, if I shared
any of his interests (camping, archery, guns, cars, etc.), he became a role–model in that area; my
mother used more of a permissive and authoritative mixture of parenting. Both of them together
provided many good, as well as some bad experiences. I knew that my parent loved me; but just as

Parenting Styles and Child Rearing
Parenting style is very important in child rearing and can have consequences in the way that a child
develops and can have long term effects on children and their personality later in life. Diana
Baumrind developed her ideas of parenting styles and their effects by studying 100 preschool
children and their parents. Although most of the subjects of her study were Californian middle class
European Americans, thus not offering much diversity in her study, the results were very persuasive
and interesting. Baumrind found that parents varied on four dimensions: expression of warmth,
strength of discipline, communication, and expectation of maturity. Using these dimensions as the
basis Baumrind developed three main classifications of parenting ... Show more content on

Finally there is a fourth parenting style which isn't grouped with the other three this is the
neglectful/uninvolved parenting style which is described as an indifferent approach towards
parenting where the parent isn't aware of the child's life, the parent is just uninvolved and doesn't
care to punish or praise the child. There are implications depending on the type of parenting style
that was used on the child. If a child grew up with authoritarian parents for example would grow up
to be well–behaved, obedient but unhappy, likely depressed, and would also likely leave home
before the age of 20. Children that grow up with permissive parents would grow up to be dependent
on parents living at home into adulthood, would lack emotional control, self–control and would be
unhappy as adults. Finally the child that grows up with authoritative parents, it seems would grow
up to be the best adjusted out of the three styles. A child with authoritative parents would be well
adjusted, happy, generous, and successful. They are also well regarded by others especially in
western individualistic societies. Now the text does warn that the parenting style which ends up
working the best for each child should be dependent on various factors such as the child's
temperament, these are after all generalizations. Parenting styles and the consequences of parenting
styles is very interesting because it can help parents ensure that their child grows up to be well
adjusted. If parents

Overall, my mother was distant and didn't expect much from my siblings and me. An example of
this parenting style would be when I found out I had received a scholarship from the Heartland

good news, but she did not contact me at all. I ended up asking her to be my plus one to the

dinner the car was filled with silence. No congratulations. No "I'm proud of you" moments. Just
heavy silence. At the dinner we spoke maybe twenty words to each other. Most of these words were
commenting on how nice the Bone Student Center looked and how delicious the meal was. When
the dinner ended, my mother drove me back home and said goodbye. No "I love you". Nothing but
goodbye. Another example of my mother's disengagement would be when my sister was suspended
multiple times and almost expelled. My sister tried to find attention from other people since she was
receiving none at home. Her way of gaining this attention was getting into fights, and sadly, it
worked. It took three incidents to gain the attention of my mother, and this only gained her attention

Parenting styles can be highly impressionable on their children. There are various styles of
parenting, and each style can have different effects on the child or adolescent. The four parenting
styles that can be implemented in the household are recognized as: authoritarian, neglectful,
permissive, and authoritative. All four of these styles carry their own unique characteristics, and
have some distinct features. Whichever style a parent decides is best to use for their child can have
multiple short and long–term effects, so it is best to look at each style and find the one that works

The children are left emotionally damaged, and have little trust. Children of neglectful parents may
also have a hard time making friends, and having healthy and balanced relationships with others.
This style is definitely one to avoid, and can leave the child feeling emotionally abandoned. The
permissive style of parenting is rather fascinating. The typical permissive parent tends to be relaxed,
and does not require much of the child. A permissive parent is pretty non–confrontational as they
attempt to avoid arguments, or any other sort of confrontation. However, there are some pros to this
style of parenting. For example, a typical permissive parent can tend to be quite loving towards their
child. However, the fact that there are not many rules set in place for the child and the child is free
to do as they please. There is a major lack of structure, and the child does not learn concepts of
discipline very efficiently. Children require a sense of structure in their environment. Unfortunately,
one of the long–term effects of permissive parents can be that children who grew up with permissive
parents tend to be more likely to engage in detrimental activities such as underage drinking. Lastly,
but not least, the authoritative style of parenting is the best viewed style of parenting out of all four
styles. These parents tend to be well balanced, and have healthy expectations of their children.

Different Styles Of Parenting Styles
According to the New York Metro Parents, a website that combines nine regional print magazines in
New York's Metropolitan areas, several studies of babies left to cry in their rooms show that parents
can't love a child too much. Ferberized children tend to grow up to be extremely successful later in
life. These children grow up to be tomorrow's doctors, firefighters, and millionaires of Silicon
Valley. (Hogan and Haskell, 2). Most of today's kids have one of the following types of parents:
Indulgent, Authoritative, Neglectful, Authoritarian*. These are generally regarded as the four main
types of parenting. These four styles of parenting are the stereotypical parenting styles most people
identify one or both of their parents as. Indulgent parents tend to coddle their children and protect
them from disappointment. Authoritative parents are people who have reasonable demands and rules
usually met by children who respond well and listen to them. Though they have high expectations,
these parents' children tend to meet or exceed the expectations due to the resources the parent's

parent who has ever purchased a parenting book strives to become. Authoritarian parents have
extremely high expectations that are almost impossible to meet and very strict rules that must be

Basically all the traits that would would be expected a child to have based on each caregivers
parenting style if very different. Every child is different a way of parenting style may or may not
affect you in the future. For, example Ben Carson raised by single parent with little to no money.
Ben Carson grew with a mind for violence such as almost killing some loved ones of his. However,
today Ben Carson is a retired neurosurgeon. This just show that not every child living in poverty and
being influenced by violence is most likely to not succeed and continue that path as a child.
Children that grew up with parents with an Authoritarian style of parenting often had poor social
skills, lower self esteem, and basically always concerned of their actions because they are afraid of
the consequences. Children with Permissive parents know that they will always have it there way.
Children that grew up in this way of parenting tend to me immature, and often escape
responsibilities. Children with Authoritative parents tend be better off than the other children who's

Why Is Parenting Style And The American Parenting Styles?
Talking about multicultural societies, why is parenting style included as part of multiculturalism?
Parenting styles was included as part of multiculturalism because a parenting style is like a habit,
and many people define a habit as a culture. Parenting styles have been used for more than a
hundred years, and every parent has their own style to teach their children based on their general
behaviors. Which parenting style do you think is better between the Indonesian parenting style and
the American parenting style? It is up to you. You can choose whatever style you want, and which
style you think is better for you. Parenting styles in Indonesia and America have similarities;
however, they have more differences that we can contrast.
Asian parents ' parenting style is not bad at all. I think the answer depends on the person who
chooses to use this style. Asian parents are very disciplined and strict with their children. Like what
I heard from many people a long time ago and also about the article I noticed the maturity difference
between high schoolers in Indonesia and America..." (Carly). They said that Asian parents rarely
lose their eyes from their children; moreover, they give their children a limited time to go outside
from home, and if they are late to come home, they will get some punishment, so they would not
break the rule again. Another example is parents almost all the time asked their children to study

Baumrind Parenting Style
Parenting Styles Hanna Lagman Los Angeles Harbor College Abstract Parenting styles play an
important role in a child's development. Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles:
authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and neglectful. According to Baumrind, the authoritative style
works best. In order to understand parenting practices in other cultures, Mexican families and
Caucasian Non–Hispanic families will be compared. It is hypothesized that the Mexican families
utilize the authoritarian parenting style, while the Caucasian Non–Hispanic parents utilize
authoritative parenting style. All families were given a questionnaire to compare the parent's
parental practices across two cultural groups. It was anticipated that the families would differ in
parental styles; however, there were no differences between the parenting styles within the cultural
groups. Parenting Styles Developmental Theory In 1971, Diana Baumrind categorized different
parenting styles by observing middle–class parents interacting with their children (Belsky, 2010, p.
201). Baumrind's parenting styles influence the field of child development and have been widely
cited. In her research, she developed four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent,

Essay about Parenting Styles
Parenting styles have been grouped into three different categories: authoritarian, permissive, and
authoritative. The authoritarian approach to parenting provides children with a clear set of rules
which have to be followed without question or reason, while permissive parents constantly are
giving into their child's every wish. The authoritative parenting style gives children rules along with
explanations for those rules, and reinforces good behavior. Therefore parents should make sure the
way they parent their children will be positive, and not negatively affect their children now or in
their children's future. According to Consistent Parenting Advice.com the authoritarian parenting
style has a "Do as I say, not as I do," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children raised by permissive parents usually have serious behavior problems due to the lack of
discipline. On the other hand "Children from permissive homes...have good self–esteem and better
social skills," than that of children raised in an authoritarian household. (Iannelli, 2004). The
authoritative parenting style is the "In between," of both the authoritarian and permissive parenting
styles, and has a "Give and take approach." Authoritative parents are very involved in their
children's lives: children help around the home and in decision–making processes, and homework is
supervised. This approach to parenting raises children who are responsible, well behaved in school,
have a high self–esteem, and good problem solving skills along with decision making skills. The
authoritative approach to parenting has very positive effects on children's lives presently, and in the
future. (Marsiglia, C.,Walczyk, J., Buboltz, W., Ross, D. 2007). Though the three different parenting
styles have been grouped, categorized, and labeled by professional doctors, psychiatrists, and
sociologists these styles were created by parents, and for the most part with children's best interest
in mind which is one of the main similarities. The parent does not choose a parenting style the
parenting style chooses the parent. However, knowledge of the parenting styles and the effects of all
three will help parents decide how they can raise their children in a way that is most

Comparison of Parenting Styles
It can be said for most parents that they want their children to grow up to be successful contributing
members of society. Being a parent is a difficult, yet rewarding task. But why do some types of
parenting result in juvenile delinquency while others find success. There are four generally
recognized parenting styles and are categorized: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful, and
authoritative. This essay will break down the various styles, its type(s) of discipline and
effectiveness. The authoritarian style of parenting is control focused and militaristic in approach.
This parent has high expectations and demands strict obedience. They often rule by fear and
punishment. Dr. Gwen Dewar states, "... Little nurturing, lots of ... Show more content on

Authoritative Parenting is considered by researchers as the "best" way to parent. It combines the

Parenting Styles And Their Effects On Children
Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children We must all realize the impact we have on the world
around us, whether it be an immediate effect or an action that releases a chain of events that is
unforeseeable. Taking responsibility for the activities we partake in during everyday life is crucial
for progressing in the future. This concept becomes much more actualized when we are raising our
children. Children are undoubtedly the future of today. How we raise them will immediately impact
what kind of lives they will have in the future, which in turn, will set up the world for years to come.
Parents tend to want a stable, and more successful life for their kids. With this in mind, parents
should practice reliable parenting styles to ensure their child's social, emotional, and intellectual
development isn't compromised. The way we raise our kids could lead to a multitude of
psychological problems and emotional imbalance if done improperly. Guardians should all engage
in the best parenting styles to make sure that our children and leading safe and happy lives that
resonate with the future of this world (Mgbemere and Telles, "Types of Parenting Styles and How to
Identify Yours"). The least involved parenting style is one where the parent(s) aren't aware of what
is going on in their child's life. Respectively, this is called Uninvolved or Neglectful Parenting. In
this parenting style, the caretakers aren't active in their child's life, therefor missing opportunities to

The Authoritarian Style Of Parenting Essay
Introduction In the early 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrid conducted a research, analyzing child–
parent behavior, seeking to identify parenting styles. The Baumrid study and other further studies
identified four main styles of parenting (Miller, 2010): the authoritative parenting style was
characterized by fair rules and consequences; The Authoritarian parenting style was characterized
by strict rules and harsh punishment; the permissive parenting style was characterized by minimal
rules with little or no consequences; the uninvolved parenting style was characterized by no rules,
and parent presence was almost non–existent. In this paper, I'm going to look at the authoritarian
style of parenting in an attempt to draw out its characteristics and its immediate and later impacts on
children impact. The Authoritarian parenting Style The primary focal point of the authoritarian style
is on respect rather than parent–child relationships. Authoritarian parents are known for being strict.
They lay out rules and expect their children to follow them without question, even if the child has a
valid reason for questioning a decision. They establish many rules for the household and leave little
or no room for negotiation on policies. Authoritarian parents also fail to explain why the rules exist
because they believe that, as the parent, they are the authority on all decisions and shouldn't be
questioned. Penalty is an important element to authoritarian parents. Discipline is not gentle

Parenting Styles in the Classroom
According to the textbook, authoritative parents have reasonable demands that consistent limits,
they express warmth and affection, they are able to listen to their children's point of view They set
up rules and explain the reasons behind the rules. They are flexible and willing to make exceptions
to the rules in certain cases (cite ths). In speaking about education, according to Robinson (add
year), the education system is broken, and we must fix it. In order to have a better education system,
teachers should use authoritative teaching style. Having authoritative teaching style in classroom
will form better student teacher relationship as well as setting higher academic success for the

Authoritarian Parents And Parenting Styles
Parents use to blabber to their children about following the house rules without explaining to them
why they should follow. They set standards in their child for them to be disciplined in a way parents
would look up to. Spencer Rathus (2014), authoritarian parents have strict guidelines about what is
right and what is wrong and they demand that rules are rules and should be obeyed without
explaining why its implemented. Authoritarian parents always want to be obeyed by their children.
If their children did not obey them, they will receive yelling or punishments. Children coming from
authoritarian parenting are more likely to have low self–esteem and low–self worth. There are some
instances that these parents that use authoritarian parenting style would put their child on shame if
what they want is not fulfilled. Authoritarian parents are strict and don't usually give their child a
freedom to choose. Kids are forced by their parents. There are students nowadays that are failing
when it comes to their studies. They are not happy to what they are doing because it's not them who
chose for their courses or field that they want to study. Under this parenting style, parents are not
very affectionate to their children. They think that being strict will keep their child disciplines but
perhaps might only lead to rebellion. Thus, authoritarian parents are affecting not just the behavior
of the student but their grades also. It is a purely strict form of

96% of authoritative parents love their children unconditionally, while permissive parents are at
89% and authoritarians are at 31%. Parenting styles have a enormous say in how your children will
grow up. How you prefer to raise your children basically boils down to three major groups. Those
are the authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Although there are five styles of parenting, those
are the most commonly adopted. Authoritarian parents tend to have the "I have complete dominance
over you" thinking. Permissive parents are, the more laid back parents who do not long to upset
their children. The parents who have high standards, but provide their children with the resources
they need to succeed are the authoritative parents.
Authoritarian parents often do not express much love, and do not provide their children's choices.

Motherhood will changed every aspect of your life with new challenges and rewards every day. You

cherish every moment with your child because the time flies. When asking my mother about the
greatest moments of raising a child, her first responses included simple memories. For example,
when I smiled at her one day revealing two baby teeth. Remember your friends and family will be a
great support system, but always follow your instinct instead of following all their advice. Your new
role will be overwhelming at time. Therefore, I have written a letter with helpful advice and
guidance to assistance you along this new amazing journey. When disciplining your child remember
that the strongest influence on your parenting style is how your parents raised you (Brimhall, 2015).
The three parenting styles that Barumrind discovered includes authoritative, authoritarian, and
permissive. These patterns parents display when raising their child can positively or negatively

control on the child's behaviors, but allow the child to develop autonomy. Unlike authoritative

Parenting can be done quickly and with little inconvenience. The reality is that good parenting does
not require classical music, but instead time and effort. As children grow from infancy into
adolescence the role of parenting broadens. How parents react to their child's actions communicates
a standard of appropriate and inappropriate behavior that are fulfilled with varying degrees of

What are the differences between children who have parents that show little affection when
compared to those who liberally hug and kiss? Does it matter if some parents are strict while others
are lax? Does it make a difference if some parents spank their children while others go on in
seemingly endlessly discussions? As my son once said to his older brother, "Just say you understand
so he'll shut up." Diana Baumrind (1966, 1967, 1978) decided to find out the answers to those
questions by determining what effect parenting styles, as interactions between the two dimensions
of parental acceptance and control, had on children's social and intellectual competence. To start
with, Baumrind identified four distinct parenting styles: neglectful, permissive, authoritarian, and
authoritative. Neglectful parenting is a style in which the parent is very uninvolved in the child's
life. These parents seem to focus more on their own lives and are not particularly involved with or
supportive of their children. They appear to be detached from the child and provide only for their
basic physical and emotional needs and not much else. They offer little or no help with homework,
provide minimal supervision, and spend little time together. Permissive (or indulgent) parents are
responsive and accepting. They make few demands of their children, indulge their children's desires,
and use little punishment. They allow their children free expression of impulses and set few

Parenting is something that usually comes naturally to people. There are no hard fast how to
manuals or rules to parenting. People generally just learn as they go. Most things are just second
nature, like feeding, clothing and generally caring for a child. However, as a child grows and other
children are born, parenting becomes more then simply handling the child's everyday needs.
Sometimes parents feel they need some help in deciding the best way to parent their children. There
have been many people who have spoken out about parenting and offered advice and assistance to
parents in need. Parenting styles are an example of something a parent can do to help them with
their parenting. A parenting style is basically a way to describe how a parent parents their child or
children. There are 3 basic types of parenting styles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Parenting Styles And Family Relationships
Parenting styles have been researched in many different journals and their role in the promotion of
healthy child attachment to family, friends and social settings. In particular this review will focus on
parenting styles and their correlation to parent–child attachment. The review will focus on the four
main parenting styles authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglect and examine the
effectiveness of these parenting styles on parent–child attachment. Then the review will further
examine these parenting styles on themes that emerged throughout the literature reviewed. The
themes are: the child's perception of parenting styles, family dynamic, psychological effects and
children with health issues. After examining the literature the main overarching conclusion is that
authoritative parenting is the most satisfactory parenting style in all of the reviewed literature and
that authoritarian and permissive parenting reflect negative parenting styles and don't promote
positive parent–child attachment. Family Dynamic Parenting styles and family dynamics have been
correlated in a study by Matejevic, Todorovic, Jovanovic (2014) where they examine the correlation
between balanced family systems and authoritative parenting and unbalanced family systems and
the appearance of authoritarian or permissive parenting styles (Matejevic, Todorovic & Jovanovic
2014 p. 433). The research examines family systems with two variables which focus on the cohesion

Parenting Styles In Psychology
Psychology is the science of the mind and behavior of living beings. This area of study originally
began in December 1879 by a German college professor named Wilhelm Wundt, but it is still a
widely researched topic today. Over the past few centuries, psychologists have dedicated their lives
to researching how the mind and actions of others correlate. Through their research, they have
discovered concepts such as sensation and perception, learning, memory, thinking, motivation and
emotions, health, and personalities. These discoveries have contributed greatly to society to help
explain why some people behave differently than others. Scientists have also learned that people are
not born knowing everything, but rather they develop over their lifespan. Factors such as parenting
styles, psychological disorders, genetics, environments, and personality components are present in
the development of people, including myself. These elements affect the outcome of someone's
mental and physical decisions. Parenting styles are one of the most impactful factors of a person's
development in life. The three major parenting styles are authoritarian, permissive, and
authoritative. Authoritarian parents forceful and they use many rules and expect complete respect
out of their children. Permissive parents are very relaxed in their requests and punishments for their
children. Thirdly, authoritative parents are demanding and hold expectations, but they also

Parenting Styles: East or West?
Parenthood is a privilege but is also a great responsibility. Parents wish there was a manual that
came along with children when they were born; however, that is not the case and parents can only
do their best in different situations. How parents act in child rearing is called parenting styles, and
geographically speaking there is a wide variety of styles practiced. The most controversial styles are
the ones adopted by the eastern and the western cultures in the world. While eastern parents are
stricter and demanding, western parents are more flexible, nurturing, and more tolerant. Amy Chua's

She wants her children to be happy, and in fact she has never pressured her children to make any

moderately successful child than a miserable high– achiever." (Rosin par 12) Rosin is the extreme
opposite of Chua; she believes children should grow up making their own decisions without parents'
pressure.
While parenting for Chinese is like a dictatorship aimed to succeed, parenting for Americans is more
about providing children a happy childhood because it is one of the most important and memorable
times of life. Amy Chua believes that children's self–esteem should not be a factor to influence
parenting methods; instead it can be used "against" children to help them be more motivated. She
believes that Chinese children are eternally indebted to their parents and that this attitude makes
Chinese parenting better. Finally, she believes that no matter what the children want, it is the parent
who knows what is best for them. In contrast, Hanna Rosin believes that children's self–esteem is
important, and they should be treated in a gentle way. She believes that strict parenting doesn't
necessarily mean better, happy or grateful children. Finally, she believes that children should be
entitled to decide what they want in their lives. As a final point, I would like to mention that Chua,

The Authoritative Parenting And The Style Of The Parenting...
The parenting style that my parents use is definitely authoritative. My parents have shown authority
towards me and my siblings but have always been flexible with their rules. My parents have never
stressed us out by being too strict with their rules. The first question I asked my parents was, "how
would you react if one of my siblings or I asked to come home later than you originally told us to
come home?" My parents responded that they would ask why we want to come home later and then
tell them they can come home later at a certain time but no later than the extended time. This fits
exactly with the authoritative parenting style because my parents would extend the time which is
being flexible and then also they would enforce a new time for us to come home which shows
authority. Next I asked my parents, "what would you do if one of my siblings or I got in trouble at
school?" My parents said they would have a talk with whoever got in trouble and make sure they
know not to ever do it again. Also, my parents said they would discipline whoever got in trouble by
doing more chores or taking away their phone for a day. This fits with the authoritative parenting
style as well because my parents are making us understand what we did wrong and learn from it.
They would also give a consequence because of it but nothing that is too harsh because they trust us
to learn from what we did. After that, I asked my parents, "what would your reaction be if I did not
do my chores at the house?"

My parents didn't like many of the people that came over to our home. There were times my parents

Neglectful Parenting Styles
This parenting style is called Neglectful, this is when a parent has a bad relationship and doesn't pay
attention to the child. If I was a parent I don't think I could ever treat my own child like they don't
mean anything to me. And as child I would be scared of my parents, going home and doing
something wrong. Some characteristics of being a neglectful parent are emotionally distant from
your child, so you never talk about feelings going through their minds which can be very damaging
to a child. One could have little to no supervision, have zero to one expectations for the child and
don't support the child with anything they do like attending school events or sporting events.
Anything you do to a child has an effect like if the parents doesn't do anything cook that child has to

Conflicting Styles Of Parenting Styles
Conflicting Styles of Parenting Parents will treat their children the way they see fit. In the
authoritarian parenting style, there is no room for freedom. In permissive parenting, there can be
more freedom than the children know what to do with. Authoritative parenting combines the gist of
both of the other styles and allows both freedom and structure. Both authoritarian and permissive
styles have components that authoritarian parents see as productive methods if used properly. Many
people associate authoritarian parenting with Asians. They often produce the people considered to

Although this is an honorable reason, the way in which it is carried out is questionable. There are
ways to have structure, but also show love at the same time. In many Asian cultures around the
world success is not an option; it is a requirement. According to one Asian mother, Amy Chua,
"Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything" (221). They do not expect their
children to pay them back for every cent they put into their educations or activities, but they see
their accomplishments as their payback. She says, "Chinese children must spend their lives repaying
their parents by obeying them and making the, proud" (Chua 221). These parents demand success
because that is their way of feeling successful in their own field of study– children. Authoritarian
parents want what is best for their children and they believe strict rules and harsh consequences is
the way to accomplish it. My father grew up with permissive parents. They were not necessarily
carefree, but they did not provide the structure and authority that is needed in a household. When
asking my dad about his childhood, he reminisces on many fun and reckless activities that he did
with the neighborhood children. Some of these activities include feeding Alka–Seltzer tablets to
seagulls and watch them blow up in the air. He was frequently sent to the principal's office and
paddled because of his terrible behavior in school.

Parenting Styles vs Effects on Children

  • 1. Parenting Styles Vs Parenting When it come to raising kids people will never know how to do it correctly. The child will still throw tantrums, the teen will still give attitude, and the young adult will insists on going to a 4 year university. All children hit these milestones no matter what kind of parents they have. There are many ways to raise a child. Every person has a way of doing things that they deem right. Looking deeper in the process of raising a child or teen will reveal so much. "...keep in mind that every parent child relationship is different, so there is not one sure fire way to go about parenting."( Rachel Telles, and Bianca Mgbemere.) Parenting is put into 4 general categories. Authoritarian, permissive, neglectful and authoritative. People fall into these categories, but there are a select few that don't. The two drastically different ones will be compared and contrasted. When it comes to parenting trying to find that happy medium between Authoritarian and permissive is the best possible thing to do for both parent and child. Each parenting style can drastically alter a child's mood, behavior, actions, and relationships. They also have positive and negative side effects and depending on how harsh they are implemented it could have serious effects on a developing child. It is up to the parents to figure out together how they would want their child raised. Alison Poulsen argues " Often, one spouse allows the other to do all the parenting or to determine the style of parenting because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Parenting Style Ginny Bouphasok Diana Refsell Developmental Psychology 10/2/12 I think so many factors influence parenting. I would like to start this off with one of the most important factors I think that influence parenting, and that is having a child unplanned and not being ready for it versus planning for a child and being ready for it. I am a little old fashioned when it comes to certain things and especially when I think of how I would raise my child. I do not have one, and I am a lesbian. I am not sure when I will have one, but I want to with a potential partner, hopefully she can carry or we can adopt as well. When I say I am a little old fashioned I guess I am referring to how I would raise my child. When I see the way my friends act ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's the parent's job to stay on top of things like that, so the children don't end up watching anything bad. I also think some children play electronics too much, there is nothing wrong with them playing it by all means, but I think some parents stick them on it so they don't have to deal with them. Another big issue is many parents get mad at their children because when it's during the school season, some young children don't like to do homework. When I was younger my dad taught me my alphabets, math, emergency numbers, and address at a very young age. My dad always bought me coloring books, pencils, and papers to keep me busy. We had a Nintendo system, but I barely used it. Even though my parents didn't speak English or learn the things I did in school they would still try their best to help me or find me help. People cannot expect for their children to love studying and working with school materials if you don't support them and work with them. When I have my child, I plan to paint and color with them all the time. It's so important to be active with children especially when they are young and their brains are developing. Communication and patience is the key with children. Also the right amount of emotion and love is very important. I know raising children is not easy that's why it's not meant for everyone. And planning ahead I think makes a huge difference. My friends tell me when I talk about what I would do with my kid they tell me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Parenting Styles Parenting styles depends based on caregiver traits and the personalities of the children. Culture is also a factor that has an effect on the type of parenting skills towards their children. Diana Baumrind acknowledged three parenting styles, along with a fourth that was incorporated later. The first style of caregiving is Authoritarian. In authoritarian parenting, it does not matter what the child say, what the parent says is final. If the child does not corporate, strict punishment is delivered. In a better understanding, parents set down clear rules and hold high standards [1]. They do not expect their children to propose opinions, or talk about emotions. Parents usually do not show affection even though they do love their child. The second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She set goals for me while I was in elementary school, such as my grades. She always wanted me to have at least a 3.0 or high, but if I did not reach that goal, she would still encourage me to do better next time. Once I got into high school, it became a different story. I had a harder time pulling the grades she wanted. Every year was different. My freshmen year was a 3.0, sophomore year was 3.2 and so on. I was only able to pull 3.2s, which was frustrating to me, but my mother still accepted it as long as I did not get anything lower than a 3.0. However, I also was a huge liar throughout my life. It was a lot worse when I was younger. She knew every single time I lied, and I always got my electronics taken away. It would either be my Gameboy, or iPod (though, getting older it became my phone and my PS3). Every lie had a consequence, which was completely understandable (you would think I would have stopped right?). Of course I went through the "I hate you" phase, for "taking my things away," even though I never meant it. Now that I am 21 years old, I could not have been anymore thankful for all the discipline and the somewhat high expectations for grades, because it made me the person I am today. I can admit I do still lie a little about a few things, but I am nowhere near how bad I was when I was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Parenting Styles And Styles Of Parenting Parenting Styles My term paper will discuss the 4 Styles of Parenting, including; the styles of parenting that we as single parents and couple parents may identify with. My paper will also discuss how each parenting styles impacts our children, if it works and the style of parenting that's most effective. Authoritative Parenting Style The Authoritative Style of Parenting, children are expected to follow the rules and guidelines that a parent with this style of parenting has put into place. This type of parents are responsive to their children and willing (eager) to listen to questions. Authoritative parents gives reasonable demands, consistent limits, expresses warmth and affection which every child, I think, yearns for. Rules are set and reasons behind the rules are explain to ensure that the child (ren) understands. They're also willing to listen to the child's feelings when setting these limits. Parents with this style of parenting are flexible and willing to bend the rules in certain cases– for example, allowing the child to stay up an hour pass the normal bedtime, so that the child can finish watching television. When a child (ren) fail to meet the expectations that an Authoritative Parent is more of a nurturing and forgiving parent rather than punishing. These types of parents uses rewards, praises, and positive consequences for good behaviors. Baurmind (1971, 1991) suggests that these parents, "monitor and impart clear standards for their children's conduct. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mr. and Mrs. Harsh Heart believe in the importance of stern discipline and impose strict rules that they expect their children to obey without question. They penalize behavior harshly, frequently with spanking. Mr. and Mrs. Easygoing do not use punishment to enforce their rules and believe in natural consequences teaching lessons and setting limits on behavior. They have regular family meetings with their children to discuss household rules and their importance to the family dynamics. These styles of parenting have their advantages and disadvantages. The children can become rebellious, if the parents are just strict but do not allow much or high expectations or do not guide their children, the children may not learn right from wrong themselves. The child may simply just behave when parents are around. Some strict parents are not open to ideas and forget to communicate with their children. Which give their children communication problems. The child will feel less confident and more insecure. The feelings of the child won't be expressed because he may believe his feelings will be criticized or punished. The children will need someone to confide in and the parent may not be available for this role. "Studies of Spanish and Brazilian adolescents have reported that teens from authoritarian homes had lower self esteem than did teens from authoritative or permissive families (Martinez and Garcia 2007; Martinez and Garcia 2008)." Secrets and lies manifest within the relationship between the child and parent. When children are under the pressure of strict rules, they learn how to avoid punishment through lies and deceit. This leads to lying about places they are going and friends they hang out with and also activities they do. Sometimes the child in a strict household does not learn to make responsible situations because the decision was always made for them. This can lead to dangerous outcomes and wrongful ... • 6. Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children Over the years studies have found patterns in parenting styles and their effects on children. "Parenting isn't only a collection of skills, rules, and tricks of the trade (Lloyd, Carol. 2012)", it defines who you become, reflects your culture and represents values important in a family. Parenting style has a long term impact on a child's development, success and outlook on life. The three styles of parenting are permissive parenting/hands–off parenting , authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting .Studies revealed that the authoritative parenting style results in the highest success rates for their children in school and in social aspects, thus creating a stable child (Lloyd, Carol.2012). Parenting styles were first introduced in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The permissive parent acts in a very easy going or hands off manner. There are very few demands and/ or rules that are expected of the child. The permissive parent is more of a friend than a parent. That, being said, could be seen as a positive or negative. Being too easy going for a child could create boundary issues of authority. The child might not understand the concept of being humble or respecting authority when necessary. This can create behavioral issues. "She presents herself to the child as a resource for him to use as he wishes, neither as an ideal for him to emulate, nor as an active agent responsible for shaping or altering his ongoing or future behavior. She allows the child to regulate his own activities as much as possible, avoids the exercise of control, and does not encourage him to obey externally defined standards (K. H.Grobman, 2008)" The authoritarian is the most demanding and least engaged. They command the child to obey, but do not use effective methods to get the child to understand why they must do what they are told. The authoritarian sees the child as an easily manipulated and neutral being (KH Grobman 2008). They expect the child's understanding of authority and maturity at a very early age and improperly enforce rules on the child. Due to the high demand–low reward method, used by the authoritarian, the child values ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Four Parenting Styles So what exactly does a united front mean? We hear it often from parenting experts on TV, the Internet, and in magazines, but do parents really understand it in practice? Everyone has a different style of parenting, and a united front means to join your parenting together so that children can not play the divide and conquer game (which they are extremely good at). Research has indicated that there are four basic parenting styles ranging from only fulfilling a child's basic needs for food, shelter, and schooling to those that expect complete obedience with no explanation or conversation. Of course each family has a unique blend of these four basic parenting styles. Experts agree that no matter which parenting style each parent has, finding a way to combine them that is consistent will produce the most capable and successful children. Parenting disagreements are one of the major causes of marital problems. So for the sake of your relationship with your spouse and to help make your children successful, happy adults you must learn to co–parent. Parents must sit down together and decide what rules there will be and the consequences for breaking those rules. Remember that this is not about winning. Establishing a parenting plan is about your relationship with each other and raising intelligent, well–adjusted children able to support themselves and live a happy life. Compromise is essential. For instance, one parent thinks the children should be in bed at 8pm. and the other believes the children will be fine going to bed at 10pm. Negotiating a bedtime around 9pm. is a quality compromise. • 8. The Effects Of Parenting Styles On Children As the social, emotional, and academic effects vary in children and adolescent, the choice of parenting style should be an informed decision to ensure their individual needs are met. Some children raised in dramatically different environments can later grow up to have very similar personalities. Conversely, children who are raised in the same environment can grow up to have opposite personalities. Despite these inconsistencies, researchers have found a direct correlation between parenting styles and the effects these styles have on children. Research has identified four main parenting styles based on two aspects of parenting behavior, control, and warmth. When these two aspects of parenting behavior merge, four primary parenting styles occur, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Authoritarian parenting provides strict parental control with little to no warmth. Authoritative parenting provides intermediate control and warmth, and permissive parenting provides little parental control and considerable warmth. Each of these parenting styles has a direct ... Children with Autism, for instance, may exhibit symptoms that can range from the avoidance of eye contact and an intolerance of changes in routine to self– injury and aggression. Thus, the best parenting styles for the child can vary by severity of the impairment. While authoritative parenting has shown to increase academic achievement, and alleviate attachment disorders in those with disorders such as non–clinical autism (Rutgers), this may not be a viable option for children with more severe symptoms. In cases like these, the need concern for physical safety may override the need to academic success. Unfortunately, due to the complexities of these illnesses, there is just no easy ... • 9. Parenting Styles : A Parenting Style And Made A New System... Parents are the major people who affect their children's lives. They raise their children and teach them the rules of life by using a specific parenting style. A parenting style is a psychological concept based on regular strategies that parents use while raising their children. Parenting is a complicated occupation that requires many different skills that work in concert to influence a child's behavior. Parental responsibilities start after the birth of the first child, and they impact the child's overall life. Parents usually develop their parenting styles based on their cultures. This situation happened because culture influences families' lives including the way parents socialize their children. At this point, behaviors and actions that are appropriate in one culture might be inappropriate in another culture. Parenting Styles Diane Baumrind was the first one who defined authoritative parenting style and made a new system for classifying parents. Depending on Diana Baumrind 's theory (1991) about parenting, she identifies three distinctive parenting styles that cover different parenting techniques worldwide. She named them authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Authoritarian parents participate in interactions with their children characterized by low warmth and utilize a strict and harsh discipline style. Authoritative parents participate in interactions with their children characterized by high warmth and utilize non–punitive discipline in which they share ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Parenting And Strict Parenting Style Every single parent around the world has their own parenting style and techniques, but there are two common base types of parenting anywhere in the world, strict and lenient. Strict parents tend to be more demanding of their children, while a lenient parent will be more flexible. Which parenting style is more appropriate for children? I believe there's no right answer to this question. A lack of strict parenting can lead children to be more irresponsible or indifferent about life choices and matters regarding their education. A lenient parent can raise a joyful child, but if leniency is too consistent it can eventually shape a misbehaved or spoiled child, or in the worst scenario, a juvenile delinquent. Some folks will argue that either way must be picked to raise a child. I believe otherwise, there should be a with an equilibrium of both parenting styles regardless of their ethnicity. Any child could be successful without the deprivation of common joyful activities that children should experience at their age. Firstly, some parenting styles will prevent children to enjoy from common childhood activities in order to solely focus on school and extracurricular activities. They would prohibit children to have playdates, play computer games, watch TV, etc. These parents will prevent the goods of childhood, they believe that being completely strict will raise a successful child in the future. However, I believe children shouldn't be deprived for common childhood activities to satisfy those qualities. For instance, according to Powell's article where he describes his parenting style towards his daughter, "She goes out to play with the kids in our neighborhood. And she watches movies. In fact, one of the reasons Abby's English is so good is that she spends time watching The Lion King and Toy Story. That's more freedom than Chua's kids were allowed, according to her book." Powell believes that his child can be able to do well in school without the need of depriving his child from things children do at their age such as watching movies. On the other hand, Chua's remarked about her daughters that, "Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to ... • 11. Parenting Styles Essay In this day in age there are various approaches to raising children. Each parent(s) must decide for them selves which style best fits their beliefs and abilities. Many parents come to the conclusion that they will try their best and just hope that their children learn right from wrong and the abilities they need to succeed in life. However, what most parents do not always realize is that the style of parenting they are using may have a bigger impact on their child than they are aware of. For the sake of these parents and their sanity, as well as the children's, I have classified these styles of parenting into categories. According to an article written by two psychologist from Vanderbilt University, Bianca Mgbemere and Rachel Telles, there are four major recognized parenting styles in psychology today: authoritative, neglectful, permissive and authoritarian. Every relationship between parent and child is different so there is no right or wrong way to raise a child. (Mgbemere and Telles) These are just categories to help give an idea as to what your parenting style may be. Authoritative Parenting: This style is the most common and widely used style of parenting for parents with children that are "normal." These parents can be easy to recognize as they are the parents that set standards for their children but counter act them with their ability to be understanding and supportive. This is the style of parenting my own parents raised me on, as many other parents do. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Parenting Styles Parenting children is probably the most important, difficult, and thankless job in existence. I should know, I am the father of two girls; one is 27 years old and the other is 25, and now a grandfather as well. I have heard many people say things like: "I raise my kids the way I my parents raised me" (while complaining about the things that their parents' did), "I am doing the best that I can" (then learn to do better), and "children should be seen and not heard" (This was my father's favorite). Nobody seems to know the perfect way to raise children; is there a perfect way? When I did a Google search for the term "parenting styles", I got over 52 million results; the term "parenting experts" gave me over 109 million, and "popular parenting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, I had a lot of fun; I enjoyed the exercise, practice, and discipline, at least for the first hour. Because I showed early skill, my father forced me to continue into the second and third hour on a daily basis, very much like Chua did with her own children. I eventually became very good at it; but 2–3 hours of daily exercise and boxing in the ring soon became tedious and was no longer fun. In her article, Chua says "what Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you're good at it." Unlike Chua's children, who learned to enjoy the violin and piano as their skills increased, I did not; I learned to hate the entire sport of boxing, and to this day will not even watch it. It was not all bad though, I learned discipline and tenacity from that experience (and how to avoid a punch). My father used combination of authoritarian, authoritative, and sometimes uninvolved parenting styles. It was common to hear phrases like "because I said so", "you live in my house, you obey my rules", or "children should be seen and not heard (and preferably not seen)" from him. However, if I shared any of his interests (camping, archery, guns, cars, etc.), he became a role–model in that area; my mother used more of a permissive and authoritative mixture of parenting. Both of them together provided many good, as well as some bad experiences. I knew that my parent loved me; but just as Chua writes in her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Parenting Styles and Child Rearing Parenting style is very important in child rearing and can have consequences in the way that a child develops and can have long term effects on children and their personality later in life. Diana Baumrind developed her ideas of parenting styles and their effects by studying 100 preschool children and their parents. Although most of the subjects of her study were Californian middle class European Americans, thus not offering much diversity in her study, the results were very persuasive and interesting. Baumrind found that parents varied on four dimensions: expression of warmth, strength of discipline, communication, and expectation of maturity. Using these dimensions as the basis Baumrind developed three main classifications of parenting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally there is a fourth parenting style which isn't grouped with the other three this is the neglectful/uninvolved parenting style which is described as an indifferent approach towards parenting where the parent isn't aware of the child's life, the parent is just uninvolved and doesn't care to punish or praise the child. There are implications depending on the type of parenting style that was used on the child. If a child grew up with authoritarian parents for example would grow up to be well–behaved, obedient but unhappy, likely depressed, and would also likely leave home before the age of 20. Children that grow up with permissive parents would grow up to be dependent on parents living at home into adulthood, would lack emotional control, self–control and would be unhappy as adults. Finally the child that grows up with authoritative parents, it seems would grow up to be the best adjusted out of the three styles. A child with authoritative parents would be well adjusted, happy, generous, and successful. They are also well regarded by others especially in western individualistic societies. Now the text does warn that the parenting style which ends up working the best for each child should be dependent on various factors such as the child's temperament, these are after all generalizations. Parenting styles and the consequences of parenting styles is very interesting because it can help parents ensure that their child grows up to be well adjusted. If parents ... Each household had its own dominate parenting style, however most of my life I was raised by my mother, so I'll focus on her parenting style. I ended up asking her to be my plus one to the scholarship dinner; I guess I'm still stuck in the loop of trying to make her proud. On the way to the dinner the car was filled with silence. No congratulations. No "I'm proud of you" moments. Just heavy silence. At the dinner we spoke maybe twenty words to each other. Most of these words were commenting on how nice the Bone Student Center looked and how delicious the meal was. When the dinner ended, my mother drove me back home and said goodbye. No "I love you". Nothing but goodbye. Another example of my mother's disengagement would be when my sister was suspended multiple times and almost expelled. My sister tried to find attention from other people since she was receiving none at home. Her way of gaining this attention was getting into fights, and sadly, it worked. It took three incidents to gain the attention of my mother, and this only gained her attention because she received three different tickets for the fighting from the police ... There are various styles of parenting, and each style can have different effects on the child or adolescent. The four parenting styles that can be implemented in the household are recognized as: authoritarian, neglectful, permissive, and authoritative. The typical permissive parent tends to be relaxed, and does not require much of the child. A permissive parent is pretty non–confrontational as they attempt to avoid arguments, or any other sort of confrontation. However, there are some pros to this style of parenting. For example, a typical permissive parent can tend to be quite loving towards their child. However, the fact that there are not many rules set in place for the child and the child is free to do as they please. There is a major lack of structure, and the child does not learn concepts of discipline very efficiently. Children require a sense of structure in their environment. Unfortunately, one of the long–term effects of permissive parents can be that children who grew up with permissive parents tend to be more likely to engage in detrimental activities such as underage drinking. These are generally regarded as the four main types of parenting. These four styles of parenting are the stereotypical parenting styles most people identify one or both of their parents as. Indulgent parents tend to coddle their children and protect them from disappointment. Authoritative parents are people who have reasonable demands and rules usually met by children who respond well and listen to them. Though they have high expectations, these parents' children tend to meet or exceed the expectations due to the resources the parent's provide. These parents are known by some children as the "golden guardians." They are what every parent who has ever purchased a parenting book strives to become. Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and neglectful. According to Baumrind, the authoritative style works best. In order to understand parenting practices in other cultures, Mexican families and Caucasian Non–Hispanic families will be compared. It is hypothesized that the Mexican families utilize the authoritarian parenting style, while the Caucasian Non–Hispanic parents utilize authoritative parenting style. The Authoritarian Style Of Parenting Essay Introduction In the early 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrid conducted a research, analyzing child– parent behavior, seeking to identify parenting styles. The Baumrid study and other further studies identified four main styles of parenting (Miller, 2010): the authoritative parenting style was characterized by fair rules and consequences; The Authoritarian parenting style was characterized by strict rules and harsh punishment; the permissive parenting style was characterized by minimal rules with little or no consequences; the uninvolved parenting style was characterized by no rules, and parent presence was almost non–existent. In this paper, I'm going to look at the authoritarian style of parenting in an attempt to draw out its characteristics and its immediate and later impacts on children impact. The Authoritarian parenting Style The primary focal point of the authoritarian style is on respect rather than parent–child relationships. Authoritarian parents are known for being strict. They lay out rules and expect their children to follow them without question, even if the child has a valid reason for questioning a decision. They establish many rules for the household and leave little or no room for negotiation on policies. Diana Baumrind (1966, 1967, 1978) decided to find out the answers to those questions by determining what effect parenting styles, as interactions between the two dimensions of parental acceptance and control, had on children's social and intellectual competence. To start with, Baumrind identified four distinct parenting styles: neglectful, permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative. Neglectful parenting is a style in which the parent is very uninvolved in the child's life. My parents said they would have a talk with whoever got in trouble and make sure they know not to ever do it again. As I read through your paper the first time, I tried to get the general ideas and concepts of your paper. In addition, I tried to look for areas that you could elaborate more. The second time I read through your paper, I looked at grammatical errors (I found few!) and awkward wording. 1. You have structured your paper really well. By creating headers for each of the sections, I have complete understanding of the information you are trying to convey. 2. You seem to have good research ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you classify deception as "immoral," this study would be great to use here! 6. In addition, see if you can find more research on the permissive parenting style. If you show clearly, why authoritative is good, and authoritarian is bad, then you should be state more information on the permissive parenting style. Grammar/Wording 1. • 38. Parenting Styles Parenting styles, Psychologist Diana Baumrid (1991,2005) stated that during the first few years of life that's when a child learn the basis of life and that stays with them through adulthood. There are ways to have structure, but also show love at the same time. In many Asian cultures around the world success is not an option; it is a requirement. According to one Asian mother, Amy Chua, "Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything" (221). They do not expect their children to pay them back for every cent they put into their educations or activities, but they see their accomplishments as their payback. She says, "Chinese children must spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making the, proud" (Chua 221). These parents demand success because that is their way of feeling successful in their own field of study– children. Authoritarian parents want what is best for their children and they believe strict rules and harsh consequences is the way to accomplish it. My father grew up with permissive parents. They were not necessarily carefree, but they did not provide the structure and authority that is needed in a household. When asking my dad about his childhood, he reminisces on many fun and reckless activities that he did with the neighborhood children. Some of these activities include feeding Alka–Seltzer tablets to seagulls and watch them blow up in the air. He was frequently sent to the principal's office and paddled because of his terrible behavior in school. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
