There are several parenting styles which guide children throughout their life. These parenting styles
can be either good or bad and this will have an effect on the child; either a positive or a negative
one. This essay investigates the parenting styles from which emerge questions about the role of the

fathering might have an effect on the child's identity later on in its life.

Parenting style can be diverse from country to country, but even across country they can be
surprisingly similar. As Being from Greece I would like to compare the American parenting style
to the Greek parenting style. An interview of my roommate was conducted which showed that her
parents were never strict with her and she never had a curfew. Her parents let her make her own
decisions. This is how things work in my family as well. My parents let me make my own
decisions and take responsibility for any consequences. Apart from that she argued that in her
family the mother is in charge of the house and the children's care whereas the father is less
involved. So things are not as different between our families. On the contrary they are rather similar.
However, whether parenting styles are pretty much the same it is also very important how a specific
parenting behavior takes place. If it takes place under harsh and non–friendly conditions then the
child will never know how to act in a good way around people and it will never have the manners
that its parents would wanted it to.

Permissive parents allow complete freedom to their children and there is very little discipline
visible. Permissive parenting was "Popular in the 1950's and 1960's" because of all the troubles
going on during WWII. (5) They like to tell their kids "One more time..." whenever the kids do
something bad. An example can be if Timmy asks his parents if he can go to a party. They tell him
he has to be home by 10pm. Then his parents tell him the limit is 10pm. Then he suggests 12pm and
because they do not want Timmy to be angry with them they let him do whatever he wants.
Permissive parents have a fear that their kids will not like them. Unlike authoritarian parents,
permissive parents make rules but they never enforce the rules. The children in this parenting style
are usually immature, dependant, aggressive, and unhappy. They do not do well academically
because of their inability to regulate to the school rules.
Now we come to the democratic parenting style. This is the best parenting style when it comes to
raising a child in a healthy environment. Democratic parents make rules but they are flexible with
their rules depending on the different situations. Democratic parents also have more open and honest
relationships with their children. They allow their children more of a chance to take responsibility
and learn from their mistakes.

brother my father showed more permissive style. I think it was because they had raised me

The Four Parenting Styles
The four primary parenting styles are Authoritarian, Permissive, Authoritative, and Uninvolved
parenting styles. Authoritarian parents are very controlling and strict with their children. They
expect obedience form their children and don't tolerate expressions of disagreement. In contrast,
Permissive parents are more relaxed and provide inconsistent feedback. They require little of their
children and don't see themselves as responsible for their children's behavior. They also don't set
limits or control over their children. Authoritative parents are firm and set clear and consistent limits
for their children. While they tend to be strict they show love and emotional support for them as
well. These parents tend to reason with their child as to why they should behave a certain way. These

parenting style. These parents show interest in their children and display indifferent or rejecting

that you can set boundaries with children and be able to display a close friendship type of

Effects of neglectful parenting can also be seen in children. According to Waitley, children of
neglectful parents often: lack self–control, are confused, have low self–esteem, are discouraged, and
defy limits yet want/need limits.
Indulgent parenting is also a permissive form of parenting. Indulgent parenting can be summed up
with the phrase, "Do what you want to." (Waitley) According to Strauss, indulgent parents: do not
enforce rules, do not communicate rules clearly, yield to coercion, have few expectations for mature
behavior, hide impatience or anger, ignore/accept bad behavior, and are generally warm and loving.
According to Waitley, children of indulgent parents often: have no self–control, lack social skills,
lack responsibility, and have no self–discipline.
From these descriptions, research endorses the theory that parenting style influences the
development of children and adolescents. Children of authoritative parents fare best: Their social
skills are high–they are likable, self–reliant, independent, and cooperative. (Feldman, 2000) It is
important to note that in many cases authoritarian and permissive parents produce children who are
perfectly well adjusted. Moreover, children are born with a particular temperament– a basic, innate

She set goals for me while I was in elementary school, such as my grades. She always wanted me
to have at least a 3.0 or high, but if I did not reach that goal, she would still encourage me to do
better next time. Once I got into high school, it became a different story. I had a harder time
pulling the grades she wanted. Every year was different. My freshmen year was a 3.0, sophomore
year was 3.2 and so on. I was only able to pull 3.2s, which was frustrating to me, but my mother
still accepted it as long as I did not get anything lower than a 3.0. However, I also was a huge liar

First stop, a local grocery store here in Mankato, called Hy–Vee. This one particular mother and
child has caught my attention. They seem to be a part of the low–class community with Spanish

parents use different styles throughout the raising of their children. Of course, I do understand that

Overall, my mother was distant and didn't expect much from my siblings and me. An example of
this parenting style would be when I found out I had received a scholarship from the Heartland
Foundation. When my mother found out she went on multiple social media sites to tell everyone
the good news, but she did not contact me at all. I ended up asking her to be my plus one to the
scholarship dinner; I guess I'm still stuck in the loop of trying to make her proud. On the way to
the dinner the car was filled with silence. No congratulations. No "I'm proud of you" moments. Just

receiving none at home. Her way of gaining this attention was getting into fights, and sadly, it

Putting aside those who are bad parents because they give little time, attention, or effort to the
rearing of their children (parents who let their children fend for themselves from a very early
age)would fall into the neglectful catagory.
Research indicates that about one–third of all parents use authoritative style of parenting. Regardless
of the preferred style, varying factors such as culture, the temperament of the child and parent, and
parental status will influence the interactive process of that style. Most parents could benefit from
knowledge and information of these style to improve their parenting skills.Parenting style is a pattern
of behavior that influences child–rearing practices. Approaches vary based on several factors,

Parents tell their children what is right and what is wrong. According to the Wikipedia, "Parenting
style is a psychological construct representing standard strategies that parents use in their child
rearing." As parents use the technique to raise their children, they also shaped their value and
personality. "Parenting style considers the balance between two aspects of parenting, namely,

believe that seatbelts are equal to safety (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston,
p. 1043); therefore, they socialized and hammered the habit of wearing seatbelt into their
children's brain. In contrast, as the result of parents being so uninvolved with their children lives,
they were the most likely to risk their life on the road as they are less likely to wear seatbelts when

grow up. How you prefer to raise your children basically boils down to three major groups. Those are
