*Construct sentences using vocabulary words. *Read a crime story
*Identify homophones. *Understand the features of a crime text.
*Identify words that are not pronounced in the same way * Write a police report with information in the story of Mona Lisa.
*Identify words that are spelt differently and their meanings differ *Recall the past topics in Unit 8
*Correctly use frequently confused homophones in a sentence. *Create an opinion writing.
Anticipated Problem:
Unwanted misbehavior in the class
Difficulty in understanding the text
Difficulty in answering the activity
Difficulty in writing
Possible Solutions:
Proper classroom management
Explain and simplify it for better understanding
Give more time to students
Give struggling students one-on-one assistant during
independent working time

identify any patterns that they
see.
Review learners that homophones
are words that pronounce the
same but they have different
meanings.
Have the class get into pairs or
small groups. Let them read the
story and ask to identify the
correct use of homophones.
Advise students that they are
now going to work alone to
correctly use commonly seen

vocabulary words.

Grade 4 Crime Story Lessons

  • 1. Class: Grade 4 Date: April 16 – April 20, 2017 LB Page: 118-125 AB Page: 96-99 Period: Duration: 40 mins/day Objectives: At the lessons students should be able to… *Construct sentences using vocabulary words. *Read a crime story *Identify homophones. *Understand the features of a crime text. *Identify words that are not pronounced in the same way * Write a police report with information in the story of Mona Lisa. *Identify words that are spelt differently and their meanings differ *Recall the past topics in Unit 8 *Correctly use frequently confused homophones in a sentence. *Create an opinion writing. Anticipated Problem: Unwanted misbehavior in the class Difficulty in understanding the text Difficulty in answering the activity Difficulty in writing Possible Solutions: Proper classroom management Explain and simplify it for better understanding Give more time to students Give struggling students one-on-one assistant during independent working time Aids/Materials Board, board markers, notebook, Language book, practice book, weekly plan with spelling words, computer and overhead projector, speaker, worksheets. New Vocabulary: famous - painting - louvre - investigators - made off with - replacement - antique - trousers - run off with - locked up Stage Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity Timings Checking Questions. Etc.
  • 2. Day 1 Warm up Presentation Discussion Application/ Assessment Unlock the difficulties. Discuss the meaning of each word and show pictures related to the vocabulary words and give example sentences. Present the pictures and meaning of each word. Write to, too, two, they’re, there and eight, ate on the board. Have students take few minutes to look at these sets of words ad identify any patterns that they see. Review learners that homophones are words that pronounce the same but they have different meanings. Have the class get into pairs or small groups. Let them read the story and ask to identify the correct use of homophones. Advise students that they are now going to work alone to correctly use commonly seen Composing sentence/s using the vocabulary words. Reading aloud the homophones on the board. Identifying the homophones in the story. Answering the worksheet: Homophones 5 mins 10 mins 10 mins 15 mins What can you see in the pictures? What are homophones? Examples: whose vs. who’s, write vs. right, it’s vs. its, and buy, by, bye
  • 3. Day 2 Warm up Presentation Discussion Application / Assessment Day 3 Warm up homophones. Show pictures of the Louvre and ask learners if they have been there and if so, what they saw. If they haven’t been there, ask learners if they know anything about it. Ask learners to read the fact file about Mona Lisa. Discuss the text to ensure comprehension. Allow time for learners to read the story again and put the events in order. Give class activity. Give them time to complete the police report with information from the story. Ask learners what they can see in the pictures and be ready for listening activity. Sharing their ideas in the class. Reading: Mona Lisa (LB page 118-120) Answering the questions on LB page 119. Answering AB page 96-97. Sharing their ideas in the class. 5 mins 10 mins 10 mins 15 mins 5 mins Have you been in this place? What did you see there? Do you like painting? Why or why not? Do you know what the famous painting in the world is? Who painted it? What can you see in the pictures?
  • 4. Presentation Discussion Application / Assessment Day 4 Warm up Presentation Discussion Application / Assessment Play the audio. Let them listen and decide if the statement is true or false. Review the fact file about Australia. Give class activity. Review of the past lesson Show picture of angry animals. Ask learners what they think about the animals. Remind the students about the difference between fact and opinion. Give class activity Listening and deciding if the statement is true or false. (LB page 124) Reading the text and choosing the correct word in LB page 125. Writing about the thief who stole the Tasmanian devil. (LB page 125) Participating in the class discussion Sharing their ideas in the class. Listening attentively in the discussion. Writing: (worksheet) 10 mins 10 mins 15 mins 5 mins 5 mins 5 mins 25 mins They looks angry! But animals really think and feel? Give your opinion.
