Final Overview
Freelance Employment: A freelancer is
someone who doesn’t work for one company
full-time, but is hired by verious companies for
certain projects. For example, a magazine or
website will have a core team of editors who
hire freelance writers to write articles, or a TV
production crew might hire freelance
cameramen to work on one series of
programmes.
Advantages of freelancing: Choose your
work. Being a freelancer means you don’t
have a boss so you can say ‘no’ to jobs you
don’t want. You might also get to work at
home for specific projects (as long as your
work is delivered to the deadline most clients
won’t mind how and when you do it) not
having to work normal office hours.
-Better pay. Freelancers can negotiate their
own rates with the clients who hire them.
Companies are often prepared to pay
freelancers a better rate than their own staff
because they don’t have to pay for things like
sick leave as part of the contract. The more
experience you have then the more money
you can ask for.

ncing-in-the-media
Company Employment: Company
employment usually consists of working
40 hour weeks plus weekends
(depending on the media company
chosen) to create content for the
company clients and third party
associates. Unlike freelancing employee
work provides sick pay and holidays and
specific criterias on what content to create
for the client, you also have company
term and conditions that you would need
to follow working in media sectors.
Expectations:
-Long and unsociable hours
-Opportunities to work away from home or
abroad, such as when filming on location
or covering foreign affairs as a journalist
-An average graduate starting salary of
£31,500 at major employers (salary vary
on contract)
