1. BANNISTER ACADEMY’s
LION AWARD FOR CLASS EXCELLENCE
Objectives:
1. to foster class unity, team work and camaraderie
2. to give recognition to the achievements of the students and the classes
3. to promote excellence in the school in the spirit of class cooperation and
friendly collaboration
This system will enable the class advisers to get the students to work together as a
team in pursuing the goals of the class, as well as the vision of the school for its
students.
This is not an additional load to the Class Advisers. To some extent, this will just
provide opportunities for the work of the Class Advisers, as well as the team effort
of the different classes, to be given due recognition through a Class Merit System.
The recognition given to the classes can serve as an impetus for both the students
and the Class Advisers to work towards excellence and achievement, thus the name
of the Award.
This is a merit system where praiseworthy deeds and accomplishments are
rewarded, and infractions or misdemeanors are greatly discouraged.
The class can earn merits to be referred to as SHIELDS because every point gained is
like a step the class makes to get closer to the ideals of Bannister, depicted in the
Bannister Seal.
Ways for a class to gain SHIELDS:
MERITS DEED/ACCOMPLISHMENT
20 Shields Zero Absence in Class in 1 Month
30 Shields Zero Tardiness in Class in 1 Month
30 Shields Clean Classroom Recognition Qualifier for 3 Weeks in a Row at
least 4 days in a week* (see *footnote below)
10 Shields For every student in good standing in Clubs/Varsity
Teams/Extra-Curricular reckoned at the end of every term
50 Shields For every student that competes in an international competition
30 Shields For every student that competes in a national competition

footnote below)
20 Shields Commendation given by any teacher to a class for Exceptional
Behavior
60 to 100
Shields
100% in class making it to Honor Rolls= 100 Shields
90% in class making it to Honor Rolls= 90 Shields
80% in class making it to Honor Rolls= 80 Shields
etc.
This is the biggest source of Shields because this is the most basic duty of every
Bannister student: to be a good, successful student!
Etc. Etc.
The School Management may decide to add more opportunities for the classes to
gain SHIELDS, for as long as clear notice is made prior to the granting of such
additional merits. (For example: class participation in Buwan ng Wika activities,
class contribution to the school-wide fairs and special activities, commendation
received by the class for special achievements -- special class initiatives like
outreach, class website, class newsletter, class performance during open houses, etc.
* to be adjudged “Clean Classroom”, the class should be able to get 4 of the 5 criteria
checked in the daily end-of-the-day inspection:
1. clean trash can area
2. seats aligned
3. board erased
4. no trash on the floor
5. bulletin board orderly
Please note that for the class to achieve this, all the students should cooperate
and help out. Cleaning the classroom should not be done by the Class Adviser.
** to be adjudged “Excellent Bulletin Board”, the class should be able to get passing
ratings during the 4 unannounced, random inspections throughout the month:
1. well-decorated/attractive
2. materials are neatly posted and/or properly installed
3. 3. has formation value (includes virtue campaign)
4. decorations are changed every month
Please note that for the class to achieve this, all the students should cooperate
and help out. Decorating/maintaining the Bulletin Board should not be done
by the Class Adviser alone.
For the CLASS to be give the LION AWARD for CLASS EXCELLENCE at the end of
each term, the class should be able to reach the prescribed number of SHIELDS
required for that term, as previously announced in the assembly.
For example, for the First Term, the prescribed number will be: 750 SHIELDS.
This has been determined by looking at the various activities (opportunities) lined
up for the Term, and getting more or less 70% of the possible total merits available.
On the part of the Class Adviser, the only additional load here would be to submit
the self-rating form at the end of each term. CAs must see to it that all the
accomplishments of the class are inputted in the computation of the class’s total
SHIELDS.
At the end of the year, classes that are able to reach the full year’s quota will be
awarded the LION Trophy/Banner.
During the Monthly Assembly with the Headmaster, where he “launches” the main
virtue to be pursued for the month, the updates on the SHIELDS Standing will be
presented. The classes are made to know how their respective classes are doing in
the LION Awards.
The classes do not compete against each other. It is even possible that all the classes
will be able to qualify for the LION AWARD (and it can also happen that no class
qualifies). Effectively, they are really competing only against themselves, not against
each other.
DEMERIT SYSTEM
Various Ways that “Shields” can be removed:
- 10 Shields For every student that is given detention due to repeated
tardiness or other offenses listed in the Students’ Handbook
- 20 Shields For every student proven to have been dishonest (cheating in an
exam, school work, etc.)
- 30 Shields Act of discourtesy towards school authorities which include
teachers, staff and guests
- 30 Shields Vandalism or destruction of school properties
- 50 Shields For every day a student is given suspension based on offenses
4. listed in the Students Handbook
For the First Term, the prescribed number of Shields to achieve Class Excellence is:
750 Shields.
The number is actually easily achievable. It is good for every class to find it easy to
hit the target at the start.
We can revise/lower this when we reach the midterm if we see that it is not
achievable for 90% of the classes. But we cannot increase it once we announce this
as the target.
The target number gets more and more difficult (i.e., higher target), more
demanding in Second and Final Terms.
Timetable:
1. Launching in a Schoolwide Assembly – Headmaster explains the Mechanics
2. Each Class to come up with the Class Name and Signum
3. Start of Reckoning of Shields by July 2
4. Install Score Boards in strategic locations to keep tab of Shields Awarded
5. Unleash Student Empowerment!
