Essay on Grateful Dead
Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead, the most popular so called underground band of all time. This band has
underwent many changes, some good and others bad throughout their thirty or so years of
performing. I plan to prove that a band that has remained together for thirty plus years isn't as easy
as many would assume. In fact I would have to say the "down" times in the band almost equal the
outrageously great time they had. Despite all the down times the amazing music of the Grateful
Dead always made it possible to bring smiles to empty faces anytime anywhere. Even now that the
bands figure head (Jerry Garcia) has passed on, the family that he created (Deadheads) and left
behind will never forget him or his music.
The very underground ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"I know that if the Acid Tests had never happened we would have been just another band," stated
Phil Lesh in a nineteen eighties interview.
This is now where the Grateful Dead were born as we know them today. The name, Grateful Dead
as every deadhead knows, choose itself when Garcia flipped open an old dictionary at Phil's house,
"and there it was...It was one of those moments," he told Rolling Stone, "like everything else on the
page went blank, diffuse, just sorta oozed away, and there it was grateful dead. Big black letters
edged all around in gold, man, blasting out at me, such a stunning combination." A veritable fat trip.
"So I said, 'How about Grateful Dead,' and that was it." The band was smoking a superpsychedelic
DMT. In another, later account, Garcia didn't like the name at first but thought is was just to
powerful to ignore. Weir and Kreutzmann didn't like it either but "people started calling us that and
it just started, Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead..." Here is the definition of the word Grateful Dead in
the 1955 Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary. GRATEFUL DEAD– The motif of a cycle of folk tales
which begins with the hero's coming upon a group of people ill–treating or refusing to bury the
corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last penny, either to pay the
man's debts or to give him a decent burial. Within a few hours he meets with a traveling

The Gospel And The Grateful Dead Analysis
The Gospel and the Grateful Dead by The Rev. Dr. Pitman B. Potter discussed the spiritual themes
present through the work of the Grateful Dead. This book went into great detail and examined the
lyrics and actions of the band. The themes in this book directly reflected the spiritual and biblical
values of community, and sharing, as well as the importance of thanksgiving and praise. One of the
biggest messages that is present through the entire novel is the theme of community. Potter uses
Brandelius' quote, "Musical performances too were structured as community events–in some cases,
dance classes–and funded on a shoestring budget with little, if any, actual profit returning to the
band." (Potter, 21) This quote directly represents how The Grateful ... Show more content on

Hart said, "God is sound." (Potter, 58) This quote resonated with me because no three words have
ever spoken more truth. Coming from a musical, Catholic background, I have always been told that
singing is praying twice. Music truly is a gift from God because God gave us the ability to hear. So,
the question comes up, what does God want us to hear? I think that God ultimately wants us to hear
his voice and know his will. Potter throws in an interesting quote by Jackson, "Music goes back
before language does. And music is like the key to a whole spiritual existence which this society
doesn't even talk about. We know it's there." (Potter, 58) This quote reminds me of lyrics to one of
my favorite songs of all time. Stevie Wonder wrote, "Music is a world within itself, with a language
we all understand." (Sir Duke) Also, Wonder wrote, "Music knows it is and always will be one of
the things that life just won't quit." (Sir Duke) Relating these lyrics to the quote, it makes me realize
that the lyrics are not what make up the song. The music being played, however, is what makes
music important. Music truly is a universal language. Throughout the world, different cultures speak
different languages. They write differently and speak differently. However, pick up a piece of sheet
music in any location of the world, and it will always be the same. There will be a staff with notes,
clefs, measures, and a time signature. Music is a language within itself. It is not taught by being
spoken, rather it is taught by being played. So, music connects the world into a community. Music
creates a universal bond that is unlike any other. This bond is spiritual on a different level. Music is
timeless because no matter what year, someone will always be able to play the music. This spiritual
bond connects us throughout the world. I think that ultimately, through sound, God is connecting us
to be one.

The Television Show Freaks And Geeks Created By Paul Feig...
Television is a huge part of the daily lives of human beings. The things that people see on screen
help them form their own values and opinions about the world around them. Television is also a
great source for people to feel represented through fictional characters and events. And for
teenagers, it is even more important to find something they can relate to during a period in their life
when they are still trying to figure out who they are in society. High school is a place for teenagers
to build an idea of what kind of people they want to be in the future, and the decisions they make
could affect the rest of their lives. In the television show Freaks and Geeks created by Paul Feig and
produced by Feig and Judd Apatow, viewers get to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Bill asks his friends to go with him, Sam dismisses the idea of going and asks instead, "Do
you want to stay a geek for your whole life?" Sam and Neil start to see science fiction as something
that wasn't "cool' anymore and wanted to do things that were considered "cool" like everyone else at
school. They think that the definition of being cool is being popular or going to social events like
make out parties. Sam and Neal are letting what society views as "cool" take over their true
identities. Society affects the way people think of themselves, and Sam and Neal are lead to think
that have to be like everyone else to fit into society. Hanging out with Lindsay causes the Freaks to
rethink what they value in their lives and what they want to strive for in the future. Lindsay is very
smart, unlike the Freaks, and she helps motivate the Freaks to start thinking about the importance of
education. Spending time with the Freaks causes them to notice her good grades and that makes
them wish they could be the same as her. In "Looks and Books", Lindsay crashes her dad's car
because of the freaks, and stops hanging out with the freaks and decides to rejoin the mathletes.
When the freaks insult Lindsay when she refuses to do something for them, she tells them that they
are just "hopeless losers with no future." This causes the freaks to start thinking about their plans of
the future. Before meeting Lindsay, the freaks originally

Drug Use Of Drugs
Drug use has it's place in all parts of the culture that was built in the United States whether it may be
in sports, music, medicine, social norms, and even recreational use. Everyday things like Coca Cola
use to have cocaine inside of the product to make the soda more addicting to the consumer. Athletes
adopted different drugs as a means of enhancing their performances in their prospective sports as
well as using them as a means to stay healthy throughout their season and to recover quicker .
Musicians sometimes used drugs as an inspiration to write new music as well as recreationally to
have fun. This created the stereotype that all rockstars use some form of hard drugs. As well as the
stereotype of the meathead jock who juices up everyday before a big game.
Musicians across the country continue to be affected and changed by drug use. Musicians such as
Miley Cyrus, Snoop dogg , Wiz Khalifa, and more. Some bands even use certain drugs to get some
inspiration for their music. The most famous example is the Beatles's hit song Lucy and the Sky of
Diamonds which many have questioned to be named after the many trips the beatles had off of LSD
as you can shorten the title to LSD which was the drug they most commonly used at the time. The
Beatles would use benzedrine in the days before they became the group of men they are known as
today. The Beatles continued to progress onto harder drugs such as Cannabis and LSD as they
became more famous and towards the end of the 1960s. It

How the Hippies Counterculture Transformed Music Essay
In the 1950's and 1960's, rebellion and music were synonymous. The 1950's brought widespread
attention to a new kind of music coined as "Rock 'n' Roll". Because parents deemed the music as
sinful, the youth used it to establish an identity for themselvess. In the 1960's, the rebellion was
given a collective charge when young adults voiced displeasure over the country's entrance into the
Vietnam War and the use of nuclear weapons. One group within this movement was coined the
"hippies". This paper will discuss the beliefs of the hippies of Haight–Ashbury in San Francisco,
California and illustrate how the hippie "counterculture" transformed into an evolution of music, in
the making of protest songs and the new "psychedelic" sound. It will ... Show more content on

Haight–Ashbury had a history of being an entertainment center, capitalizing on San Francisco's
economic success in the Gold Rush.
In his book titled The Making of a Counterculture: Reflections on the Technocratic Society and Its
Youthful Opposition, historian Theodore Roszak described a "counterculture" as typically involving
disapproval or an attempted dismissal of those institutions which presently hold some level of
dominance, while simultaneously having hope for an improved life in a new society, in terms of
thinking and being. There has been some level of debate, discussing whether or not the hippie
movement of the 1960's and 1970's matched this definition. Was the movement solely a product of
the hippie's clustered university lifestyle, where common experimentation with drugs as well as
political activism served as their own sources of rebellion? This notion was argued by
anthropologist William L. Partridge, in his case study titled The Hippie Ghetto: The Natural History
of a Subculture.
Roszak argues in his book about a hippie rejection of technocracy: the system of organizations and
elite experts that influences society to attach itself to the importance of efficiency, rationalizing,
planning, and necessity, which hippies felt was clearly depicted by the nuclear arms race and fight
against communism between the United States and U.S.S.R.

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol...
Social Landscape Change
The short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates was
published in 1966, which in turn happened to be one of the most complicated decades in history. A
time of misdirected hatred, recreational substance usage, and a cloak of death surrounding the
world. As a result, the social norms of the time period are expressed in Oates short story through
language, imagery, and allusions.
Oates begins her story much like any other author showing a dysfunctional family, with depictions
of dysfunction, rebellion, and mindlessness of those who are most important. Connie, the main
character, is shown as the redheaded step child so to speak, she is neglected by her father and
receives nothing but negativity from her mother. Now, there is always the argument that Connie is
an immature teenager who has not yet had to grow up and face the music of responsibility; however,
the lack of defined parental structure in her life hinders her capability to flourish as a young adult.
For example, Oates writes "Their father was away at work most of the time and when he came home
he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed. He didn't
bother talking much to them, but around his bent head Connie's mother kept picking at her until
Connie wished her mother was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over." (Oates, 468) The
excerpt describes the relationship of Connie and her parents to a tee with the description of the
ignorance of her father and the personal anguish with her mother. Oates uses language to paint the
picture she wants the reader to see and follows through on the image she has manifested.
Furthermore, Oates uses descriptive language throughout the short story which further develops the
characters and the relationships between Connie and everyone else. For example, when Oates writes
about Connie's sister, June, she depicts her as "plain" and "chunky" neither of which sound
appealing; however, when Connie is described she is clearly labeled "pretty and that was
everything". With the usage of descriptive language, Oates is also creating the cookie cutter rival
image. From the beginning, Oates has given one sister and advantage that

Art, Literature And Society From 1955-1970 Essay examples
Fear and Loathing in a Clockwork AgeAh! The noble search for identity. That intangible
achievement that all artists lust after and lay in torment over. And during the post war era that
struggle reached incredible magnitudes. The world cried out for legions of anti–heroes, who were
only virtuous in their unapologetic and brutally honest lack of virtue. And the art world provided as
many counter culture messiahs as was needed to "Damn the Man".
The Beats, hippies, and punks are evidence that behind the white picket fence of suburbia lay an
America that wanted more out of life than the sugar coated portrayals of domesticity and patriotism

To the Beats the only solution to a life of domestic stagnation was to pack up and let life lead you
down one winding road after another. There was a certain comfort in the unknown. Ambiguity
turned survival into a triviality, while one could find the deepest meaning in chance and whimsy.
When mere existence doesn't seem to be guaranteed it's the little moments of perfection that become
one's focus. No other Beat poet understood that concept as well as Jack Kerouac. "Jack
Kerouac single handedly created the beat generation.
Although Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and William Burroughs Brought their separate and
cumulative madness to the beat generation, it was Kerouac who was the Unifying Principle."
(Krim,p.4)While Kerouac certainly lived for the moment it would be missing the whole point of his
work to claim that was just trying to get his kicks in before it was over. If anything, he eagerly
awaited his termination. And found his solace in moments of pure tranquillity, since they were the
closest he could come to the state he named the Golden Eternity, which he believed awaited him
after death. This was in opposition to his friend and fellow beat Allen Ginsberg.
Ginsberg believed "in grasping after life as much as you can because of it's sweet

Grateful Dead Concert Essay
For concert essay 2, I have went with an online concert. I have chosen the concert at Alpine Valley,
where the Grateful Dead performed July 7, 1989. This is a historic venue for the Grateful Dead and
the Deadheads, because this was an atmosphere that always seemed to be far more electric than
most. Although the Grateful Dead was a great live act throughout the entire existence of the band,
many of the band members admit during the 89 & 90 tours, they were at their best. To open the
concert, the band members claim the stage to a roaring crowd, particularly focused upon Jerry
Garcia. With very little preparation time, the band jumped right into their first song, without
hesitation. This stood out to me because all of the concerts I have seen live, they'll spend quite some
time tuning, and chatting up the crowd. This crowd sure did not need the pep talk, because of the
virve already presented by the crowd. The opening song was "Let the Good Times Roll." With this
song as an opening and a more prominent Grateful Dead hit, the aura of the concert had already
been set. Each singer of the band had their own verse in this song, to really get the crowd engaged
with each member. A very distinguishing piece of the Grateful Dead was that they had ... Show more

personal favorite performances include those songs categorized as a rock ballad, with the stage
lights low, and the band gently playing songs such as "Standing on the Moon." This song depicts a
man standing upon the moon, gazing upon unfolding events on Earth, longing to return to his lover
and home. Within this song, The Grateful Dead pay homage to their roots, including a line
"Somewhere in San Francisco, on a back porch in July." After this verse, Jerry Garcia erupts into a
phenomenal guitar solo, as the lights fade to

Why Should You Be Grateful
Why should you be grateful in life? Following are 10 insights that I 've gathered over the years that
have helped me understand more about why I want to practice gratitude now and forever. I think that
if you are not feeling too grateful today or struggling with the concept of gratitude and how it works
in life, they will help you feel better, so read on!
1. You Can 't Teach Someone Else To Be Grateful Unless They Want To Be Taught
You can create the best gratitude book, show, or course in the world and you will still not be able to
help some people be grateful if they are not looking for a way to be more grateful. When it comes to
gratitude, this is something you must remember or you will be frustrated more often than not with
other people.
Almost all of us have a bitter or angry person in our lives who complains about everything and
everyone. Most of us who understand gratitude (or are at least a little bit more aware of what life has
to offer us) and want to be happier in our lives have tried to help these people see all the good things
in their life and failed.
For me, I spent countless hours trying to get someone very close to me to understand that there is a
lot to be grateful for in this life, such as his wife, his kids, his home, his health, and his wealth. He
didn 't see any of these things in a positive light because he was too focused on the stress he had and
the events, circumstances, and people who he saw in a negative light. Eventually, I gave up and

Music of the Sixties Essay
Music in the Sixties
The music of the sixties went through tremendous change. It shaped mush of the music we hear
today. From New Orleans came Jazz, from the East Coast came rock, from the West Coast came
Psychedelic rock, and from England came the Invasion.
"In 1963 the Beatles shattered the dreariness of the music business. And with them came rock, the
music of the sixties, and a music quite different from rock'n'roll." The jazz era had slowly faded
away and in came the Beatles, possibly the most influential group of musicians ever to play.
Producing a new sound soon dubbed "the Liverpool sound"; this sound would go on to revolutionize
the entire sixties era. Along with the Beatles cam the shaggy hairstyles by men and the lower ...

This would end up in the band receiving FM radio play in which they would show up for interviews.
The band's popularity would spread by local underground press and word of mouth. This same
formula was key in building the Jeff Beck Group, Jethro Tull, Joe Cocker, and Led Zeppelin. Music
was beginning to take a step in a different direction.
Another area that new music was beginning to develop was in the slums of San Francisco. The
Haight–Ashbury district would spawn acts such as Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and the Grateful
Dead. San Francisco had developed a consciousness about rock. Janis Joplin left in 1967 and
traveled to Texas where she found her claim to fame. Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead
stayed in Sna Francisco playing in small theatres and venues. The most famous of these was the
Filmore West. The combination of this improvisational rock bands and psychedelic drugs produced
a subculture never seen before. The hippies had invaded the United States. Jimi Hendrix helped pave
this new style of music. "He challenged people with his extensions of the guitar into all sorts of
realms that had been overlooked, ignored, or undiscovered." The improvisational rock was strongly
supported by an underground force that helped the band in many ways. They gained the band
popularity by spreading the word, they kept the venues packed by

Humanity fantasizes the hope that an act of kindness sends a ripple that will create a domino of kind

Why Being Grateful Is Important
Being grateful is the one of the most important things: being thankful for what I have, what I have
gone through, for the day that has been presented to me. With being grateful it is important to do
something great to really capture life's essence. Even if it is not beneficial to yourself I believe if
you help one person at least on your journey, it is worth it. I would like to achieve a career being a
business owner. As every person struggles finding their selves, I too struggled but I found out no

have gone through a lot of pain at a young age and if there is something that can be done to fix it
and help them live easier I would love to be able to be a part of a foundation like that. I also would
love to make my own foundation to help kids in school that have nothing to look forward to when
they return home such as food, clothing and school supplies. Kids are the future and when they are

My family grew up in Haiti where school has to be paid for which is hard for their parents for

Frederick Douglass Blissful Or Grateful
The Grateful and the Ungrateful
As an American citizen it is our responsibility to understand and acknowledge the freedom we have

kids is a bus.Now think about the kids in Mexico, they wish they can go to school to get an

We now have government to ensure that we live being "self evident, that all Men are created equal",
this gives us the freedom to be entitled to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" (Jefferson 1).
Now let's go way back to when slavery was taking place, it was a very tragic period of time because
the people that were called slaves are human beings just like us. They would get mistreated just for
being the color they are, when in reality it wasn't their choice to be born black. They were kidnapped
from when they were just little babies to adults. Frederick Douglass was "separated" from his
mother "when [he] was but an infant" (Douglass 2). Not one single slave had the luxury of being
with their family/ friends, having a normal childhood, working to get their own money or eating
what they pleased or the amount they wanted. Slaves were considered property which is cruel
because they are regular human beings just like us. In the book "Narrative of the life of Frederick
Douglass An American slave" it mentions all his past experiences that he unfortunately had to go
through because of his skin color. He tells us that he never knew his mom the way he wanted to
because he was taken away from her, and she had died when he was a kid. He was very strong
because all the pain he went through though he didn't deserve it

Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain Essay
Michael Peller has been a fan of the Grateful Dead for as long as he can remember. As a child, he
listened to their albums on cassette tapes in the car, and as a college student, he attended live
performances.
The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 in Palo Alto, CA. It was known for its eclectic, psychedelic rock
style, which was sculpted amid the San Franciscan countercultural movement of the 1960s. The
movement gained speed alongside the civil rights movement and hippie culture. The Grateful Dead
embraced these new beliefs in their songwriting, rejecting common structure by adopting the "jam"
genre, which is based off of live improvisation.

However, the parts of the song that most affected Mike Peller were the allusions to and imagery of
the 70s. The song's story follows a young man, walking around the local square, who is entranced by
a young woman with "scarlet begonias tucked into her curls" (Grateful Dead). She also had "rings
on her fingers and bells on her shoes," a line that has stuck with Mike because of how the image
reminds him of the 70s, and as an extension, the ideas of freedom and being carefree. Mike doesn't
have much of an opinion about the lyrics of "Fire on the Mountain", but he does love the rhythm and
the bass guitar because "it just makes anybody want to dance" (Michael Peller). However, I found
the lyrics to be meaningful in ways related to Mike's enjoyment of the song. The line, "fire, fire on
the mountain", is repeated throughout the song, and almost sounds like an urgent call for help.
Despite this, the beat and music rolls on. The song pokes fun at a "long distance runner" who
continues to make and dance to music even as "a dragon with matches" is "loose on the town". But
when fans dance to the music live at a concert, the lyrics take on a different meaning: on how even
as everything is burning down, the fans keep dancing and the Grateful Dead keeps

Importance Of Music In My Life
Music has always been a big part of my life. I remember the radio or record player always playing
music at home growing up. I sang in the choir at church and school. I also played the trumpet all
through middle school, I was even first chair in eighth grade. Once I was in high school, attending
concerts became a regular outing for me and my friends. I have continued to keep music in my life
to this day.
The first period of my life represented is early childhood. I honestly could not think of one song I
may have loved between ages 0 to 4. Any music that I would have listened to would have been what
my parents liked at the time. I decided to look up hit songs for the year I was 4 years old. Looking
through the list I remembered that I loved Chicago's song "Saturday in the Park". Every summer we
traveled to Maine growing up to visit my Grandma, and this song was my favorite. I specifically
remember playing in the garage and listening to this song over and over again. Every time I hear this
song I think of Summer and all the fun I had growing up. It was released in 1972, but was still
popular when I was in this time period. I still love it.
The second period of my life represented is elementary school. I loved Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse
of the Heart". These were the days of listening to the top forty with Casey Kasem on Saturday
morning and taping songs you liked. I had to tape this song so I could listen to it over and over. I

LSD and the Psychedelic Scene Essay
In the sixties, the psychedelic music scene was at its prime and the world was full of hippies. During
this time, drugs were a very popular part of the hippie culture and the prevalence of LSD helped to
create the distinct genre of psychedelic music. Many bands and artists such as The Beatles, The
Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Grateful Dead were heavily influenced by LSD, which
led to the creation of some great music. This decade was full of adventure, music, sex, drugs, and
exploration, which was all made possible due to this powerful and trippy drug. Before jumping into

There are many references to LSD in songs from this time due to the big influence it had on the
artists who wrote them. In order to produce the psychedelic feel, the artists would write "esoteric
lyrics, often describing dreams, visions, or hallucinations" as well as other techniques such as
distorting the sound, playing sections of the song backwards, and delaying sounds. Another
important part of psychedelic rock is the influence of Indian music. Bands such as The Beatles
popularized this technique of using "exotic instruments like the sitar, the tambura, and the tabla" in
their music (Psychedelic Rock). LSD started being associated with music when Ken Kasey would
hold acid tests (essentially big parties where everyone was given the drug) where Grateful Dead,
formerly known as Warlocks, would play as the house band. These parties gave them recognition in
the San Francisco area and their popularity soon skyrocketed. Although their studio albums were not
a great hit, their live concerts were very popular (Keno). This lead the way to concerts surrounded
by the use of LSD. Everyone would indulge in the substance and then music would be played for
everyone to enjoy. This was a very common practice among artists and music listeners in the sixties
as places like the Avalon Ballroom and the Fillmore Auditorium soon began popping up in the San
Francisco area. In order to inform the public of these new events, people would put up "posters on

make have changed drastically, mainly because of celebrities and public figures. Ripped jeans?
Long hair? Most likely, these style choices wouldn't be popular if it weren't for the musical
influence. Throughout the 20th century, the choices many teenagers made were influenced by the
Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Michael Jackson, and Nirvana.

People were speaking out against them in Church. Beatles merchandise was thrown into a huge fire
and burned in front of everyone. One statement was turned into dispute throughout the nation.
Teenagers rebelled against the Beatles. The group that was once world–wide, became shunned. This
fiasco resulted in the Beatles traveling away to transform themselves in Rishikesh, India. For weeks,
the Beatles stayed in India, meditating and doing yoga. As they learned when they got back, their
meditation and yoga practice was a hit, and teenagers were doing it frequently. "We want the
younger generation, especially, to know about it... We've got to convince people... that what we can
do, anyone can do" (Lennon).
The Beatles–MUSIC The day that changed America: February 7th, 1964. The Beatles traveled from
the UK to the US. They were an instant hit amongst teens. The sound of the Beatles was one of kind,
and people tended to bask in their experience. Concerts became a popular place for teens to express
themselves in an unorderly fashion. There were drugs, loud music, rockstars, and large groups of
teenagers that wanted to rebel. The concerts were filled with chaos. People found it hard to control
these teenagers with strong attitudes and large egos. The choices made at Beatles' concerts ranged
from drug abuse to vandalism. The whole idea of alternative music rocked their worlds.

The Grateful Dead Heads Analysis
Defiance of the Dead Heads "Dead Heads" existed in a subculture that was very common in the
1980's which originated from the band "The Grateful Dead". This band gave people in America an
overall feeling of acceptance and freedom that they found that mainstream music culture could not
provide. The culture of the Dead Heads and what drew people to become apart of the culture can be
understood using the structural functionalist approach. This culture as based upon freedom, and had
very little sense of what was right and wrong. With conventional culture opposing their beliefs and
freedom, many individuals began to carry out acts of violation against authority and the people who
followed mainstream culture. These scandals included things

Comparing The Grateful Dead And The Good Earth
In October 1973, The Grateful Dead, an American rock band, released Wake of the Flood, featuring
the song "Let It Grow", written by John Barlow and Bob Weir. Nearly forty years earlier, Pearl S.
Buck, an American feminist writer who was raised mostly in China, published her best–selling
historical fiction novel, The Good Earth, which she won the Pulitzer Prize for in 1932 and the Nobel
Prize for Literature in 1938. Page 29 of Buck's novel, in describing a scene between the protagonist
and his wife, is an effective exemplification of the major theme of the novel. Both literary works
examine the inherent excellence of hard work and labor and the elegance of the cyclic nature of the
natural world. Despite establishing similar tones regarding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Buck effectively achieves her purpose through her masterful use of diction and syntax. The couple
working on the land is described as a "perfect sympathy of movement", implying that there is a
faultless harmony and order to their work. Then she details how everything comes from and returns
to the earth and how everything undergoes a cycle of life and death. Buck makes sure to repeat the
phrase "over" in order to emphasize the cyclicity of this process. She utilizes commas to separate
parts of the sentence, lengthening the sentence, developing a calm attitude at least on part of the
writer. Following that, the word "so" is used to display the inherent inevitability of this process. The
short, terse sentence "Each had his turn at the earth" contrasts with the lengthy descriptive sentences
previous to it to display what the author feels is the essence of the cycle. Similarly, in "Let it Grow",
the songwriters express the cyclicity of nature when he describes how the plow cuts "round and
round"; how the the ground is "becoming" to the next season ; and how the "black dirt [is] live
again". The cycle is briefly described when the songwriter says "Seasons round, creatures great and
small, up and down as we rise and fall". In essence, both excerpts explore the natural cycle of life.
However, the excerpt from the novel discusses cooperation. A subtle metaphor is created where O–
lan represents the Earth and the production of a child is likened to the cultivation of the land. Thus,
the necessity of the emphasis on Wang Lung and O–lan working together. Additionally, another
distinction is evident when analyzing the two prosaic works:"Let It Grow" utilizes personification
when referring to the natural world, which is notably absent in the excerpt from The Good

Grateful Project Reflection
I've learned a lot from the Grateful Project by interviewing people, however, many of the responses
I've received were expected. For example, many people have told me that they are grateful for their
loved ones and partners. Six people out of the twelve interviewees have said that they were grateful
for their friends and families, and that is the expected response. Out of the 12 people I've
interviewed, I am the only one that said that I was grateful for my education, and I was extremely
surprised. I interviewed 5 teachers, past and present, 2 family members, 2 friends, 2 community
members, and of course, myself. The most descriptive and meaningful interview that I've done,
would probably be Mr. Kevin Woodcox, my former Civics teacher. He even

Essay Causes of the Counter-Culture
Causes of the Counter–Culture As the 1950's rolled along and the 1960's came into effect, the world
was thrown into a topspin that would soon define every generation of youths. As the trends changed
and the music got more complex a deeper metamorphosis was taking place inside every city and
every person. To develop a counterculture in the 1960's there had to be new ideas circulating that
were counter–norm. These ideas were not developed right away for any one reason, though. Just like
the times, the causes for this counter–culture were far more complex than anyone had seen before in
the 20th century. Some could say it was because of a civil rights call or say it was because of the

Innocent people had their lives ruined by stereotypes and false accusations because of this time.
Vietnam was a war that was said to stop more communism, however the children of the United
States were so tired of hearing about Communism that they just wanted it all over. Civil rights of
any individual was also expounded on in the 1960's. All ethnicities wanted equal rights for everyone
because of discrimination and segregation that took place in the north as well as the south. The Civil
Rights Act of 1957 allowed the Federal Government the right to investigate Civil Rights Violations
which did nothing except bring it out for an example of what was to come for freedom. Schools
were separated to white and black public schools. The white schools had far better facilities and
even more in ways of academics and expectations than the black schools. The blacks schools were
typically run down with unequipped teachers who cared, but couldn't do anything about it. Few
challenged the schools because of the one set standard of law set in place about segregation through
Plessy vs. Ferguson. This was the standard until Brown vs. Board of Education where they said that
separate was not equal and could never be. This showed the people that many things could be
accomplished if it was a just cause. On May 6, 1960 President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights
Act of 1960. A year later on

The Grateful Dead Essay
The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead was a band that toured continuously for 30 years until the death of lead man
Jerry Garcia. They were known for free flowing jams and bluegrass roots. Phish is a band that has
toured consistently for the last 17 years and has in time made themselves into stealth multi–

A third thing they have in common is their fans (Deadheads and Phans). The Grateful Dead and
Phish have both established quite a following. These fans follow their favorite band around the
country to see their shows(this phan has been to over 25 Phish shows). They also collect their
favorite shows on cd–r or tape, since both bands have an open taping policy at their concerts. By
doing this, Phish and the Dead opened up a new hobby; and other bands have gone along with open
taping (e.g. Dave Matthews Band, Moe., Bela Fleck).
Although these two bands do similar things with their music, the music itself is considerably
different. I think the reason Phish is labeled "Children of the Dead" is because of their early years
playing small gigs at Nector's bar in Vermont. They were just starting out, and did not have enough
original songs to have a complete set list. This forced Phish to do many cover songs. Mike Gordon
(bassist), the only real Dead fan in Phish coaxed his fellow band mates to cover some Grateful Dead
tunes, along with covers from other various artists and their own originals. The Dead songs were
played on very few occasions, and the songs were "Fire on the Mountain" and "Scarlet Begonias"
(commonly known as Fire*Scarlet). After a while people started calling Phish a Grateful Dead cover
band, even though they covered a few Dead

Misconceptions Of Being Grateful
A common misconception in the word "grateful" is that the woman or man is happy because of the
things they are grateful for. This could not be more incorrect. Happiness is subjective, since you can
be grateful without being happy, and vice versa. Being grateful is just a state of contentedness about
certain blessings one has been privileged with. I, for one, am appreciative of many things in my
fortunate life; however, I am not necessarily happy. One of the things I am grateful for is my status
in society. Being a Caucasian female, I feed off the benefits of white privilege. I am thankful for the
lack of discrimination, direct and indirect, by common media and society, as well as the
opportunities I am handed to by modern American society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As a baptized Christian, cisgender, heterosexual and heteroromantic female, I do not face adversity
for my lifestyle. I am exactly what people are programmed to assume and do not have to explain
myself. I am part of the majority in American society. There are very few, if any at all, cases of
heterophobia and cisphobia, and I am not assumed to be a national threat because of my religion.
People in general are not disgusted by me, and they do not condemn me or say I will "burn in Hell"
for my character. They do not use slurs about me or protest my existence. I can get married
anywhere I want. My identity is romanticized as a "Juliet" or an "Eve" and passed as regular, run–
of–the–mill activity. If I was a member of the LGBT+ community, in some countries I would be
executed. People would joke and demean my identity, using inappropriate slurs to describe me.
Certain groups of people would feel disgusted by my existence and try to "cure" me of my
unorthodox biology. If I belonged to a different religion, such as Islam, I would be called a terrorist,
stared at in fear, and face difficulty by national security. Despite my patriotism and love for
America, society would hate me for my identity. The normalization of the LGBT+ community and
other religions has yet to occur in the United States. Steps are being taken to normalize the LGBT+
community, with the national legalization of same sex marriage and increasing representation in

Think about your family of origin Most persons found this family offered love and appreciation as

During the 1960s the United States was going through a lot of social changes. One of the major

marijuana and LSD. Two men, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey, were known as "the so–called acid

My Christmas And Christmas
I woke up to a raging fire on my farm and my Papa gone, and I realized things were about to
change. I had all the things I wanted, and I never was grateful for these things. But when my Papa

poor and had almost nothing. All those things were taken away from me. I have come to appreciate
everything I have. I thought I would have riches forever, but now I realized that you shouldn't take
things for granted, and be grateful for the things you have.
I lived in a beautiful farm in Mexico with my Mama and Papa. Everything was perfect. I would
walk through the red rose bushes with my Papa. He would teach me to lay down in the fields, and
listen for the heartbeat of the earth. We would hear the "Bump bump" of the Earth. The dirt was
rough on our faces and we could feel a soft breeze. We had servants that would do everything for us.
I never had to do anything for myself. We had riches and I had everything I wanted, and I never
thought that would change. I was getting ready for my 13th birthday. I would have a great party. It
was grape harvesting time, so the servants were harvesting grapes. The grape rows looked like
evenly spaced purple streams. Everyone is setting up for my 13th birthday party and Papa should be
home soon. There would be delicious food, and dancing. All my friends would be there and I would
have lots of beautiful presents. And, as expected, a doll from Papa.

The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History
The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History The vocalist and guitarist of the Grateful Dead,
Jerry Garcia was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, impacting both the

Jerry was not only interested in musical arts but he also drew and painted often and enrolled in the
San Francisco Art Institute to study and practice the visual arts. For his fifteenth birthday, Jerry
Garcia received an electric guitar, his favorite instrument so far; by this time, Jerry was already
playing the banjo and the piano. Soon after, Jerry joined his first band, the Chords, solidifying his
destiny as a musician. Jerry Garcia's most obvious influences deal with music and the modern pop
music band's role. He has changed the way music is produced, the way music relates to its listeners,
and how the band interacts with its fans. Jerry Garcia was the renaissance man of the 1960's singing,
writing, and playing many instruments including the acoustic, bass, and electric guitars, the banjo,
and the piano, which was a revolutionary idea for the time. He and the Grateful Dead worked to
successfully enable the elimination of a record company in the music world. Jerry Garcia and the

Throughout history there have been many musical "influences". One extremely
important influence to modern music is The Grateful Dead.
The group was formed in 1965 by bluegrass – enthusiast Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ron
"Pigpen" McKernan on vocals and organ, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, classical
music student Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. From the beginning,
they brought together a variety of influences, from Garcia's country background to Pigpen's feeling

Grisman is a still a renowned mandolinist, but while with Garcia, they both explored the bluegrass
scene. This was Jerry's "foundation" for his musical contributions to the Grateful Dead.
Without Jerry's influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it's distinct earthy timbre or feel that
has been extremely significant in attracting their particular following.
Another contribution to the Dead's style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on the
trumpet, Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead's then
nucleus, The Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style
usually finds his fingers running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right),
dropping what are affectionately known to fans as "Phil Bombs", furiously low
frequency notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can only be created with a five or six string
bass. As one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles together could create somewhat of
an interesting style. Well, it only gets better.
Bill Kreutzmann, the "heartbeat" of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the
age of eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be heavily
involved in the "rock and roll" scene. As a teen, Kreutzmann even created rock in roll

Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead
Jerome John Garcia was born in 1942, in San Francisco's Mission District.
His father, a spanish immigrant named Jose "Joe" Garcia, had been a jazz clarinetist and
Dixieland bandleader in the thirties, and he named his new son after his favorite Broadway
composer, Jerome Kern. In the spring of 1948, while on a fishing trip, Garcia saw his father swept to
his death by a California river. After his father's death, Garcia spent a few years living with his
mother's parents, in one of San Francisco's working–class districts. His grandmother had the habit of

He was also working part–time at Dana Morgan's Music Store, where he met several of the
musicians who would eventually dominate the San Francisco music scene. In
1963 Garcia formed a jug band, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. Its lineup included a
young folk guitarist named Bob Weir and a blues lover, Ron McKernan, known to his friends as
"Pigpen" for his often disorderly appearance. The group played a mix of blues, country,
and folk, and Pigpen became the frontman, singing Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins tunes.
Then in February 1964, the Beatles made their historic appearance on The
Ed Sullivan Show, and virtually overnight, youth culture was imbued with a new spirit and sense of
identity. Gracia understood the group's promise after seeing its first film, A Hard Day's Night.
As a result, the folky purism of Mother McCree's all–acoustic form began to seem rather limited and
uninteresting to Garcia and many of the other band members, and before long the ensemble was
transformed into the Warlocks. A few dropped out, but they were soon joined by two more; Bill
Kreutzmann, and
Phil Lesh.
It was around this time that Garcia and some of the group's other members also began an experiment
with drugs that would change the nature of the band's story. Certainly this wasn't the first time drugs

LSD: An Analysis
Following the discovery of LSD in 1943 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, it did not take too long
for people to realize the power and promise of the drug (MacDonald, 1995). It was the first time
ever that radically consciousness–altering drugs were available to and consumed by millions in an
industrial society (Johnson, 2011). Already by the early sixties, the youth countercultures in
California –especially in San Francisco– had embraced the use of psychedelic drugs, with the first
major underground LSD factory created by Owsley Stanley (Johnson, 2011). And yet, though
elements within psychedelia's penumbra had projects and believed in particular aims and values,
according to Grunenberg & Harris (2005), psychedelia was not a movement, it was a mind
manifesting experience that stimulated artists to create a new artistic style.
Around 1964 the Merry Pranksters, a nonchalant group that developed around novelist Ken Kesey,
sponsored the 'Acid Tests', a series of parties held by Kesey in the San Francisco area, and which
were entirely centered on the use of LSD (supplied by Stanley) (Class). Accompanied by light

For instance, on page 9, an FBI agent accidentally sniffed LSD while searching an LSD lab run by
Pickard. He had to be induced into a coma with Thorazine, which suppresses LSD's hallucinatory
effects– it wore off while he was in the shower and he slipped back into a coma. However, with
disappearance of the drug, Americans did not stop using; instead they started looking for others
illegal drugs to feed their addiction. They started experiencing herb salvia which was not illegal, and
it has less side effects comparing to LSD. Like it is stated on page 3, "like all drugs acid is a

What It Means To Be Grateful
What does it mean to be grateful? Why do we need to be grateful? As a Christian why is it important
to be grateful? Based on what we have done for the past week, which is writing down what we were
grateful each day, I have learned to look at life a little differently. Gratitude is not just an expression.
It is not temporary feeling. I have learned that gratitude is something much more permanent and
everlasting. Gratitude is a genuine feeling that can help you look at the world in a whole new
beautiful world. Gratitude can make this ugly world beautiful. In the week where I was inputting
into a journal what I am grateful for, has been a week of pure joy and amazement. I was able to look
at my day and really reflect on what effect of what people have on me and what effect I have on
them. For example, on Saturday I wrote that someone held my door without me realizing it. I was
just really grateful that someone took their time out of their day just to provide that act of service in
my life. It makes me look at the little things and appreciate people in a different way. I was able to
stop looking at the big picture but look for little details. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was able to really reflect on my day and made me realise that I have a lot to be grateful for.
Knowing the good people has done for me throughout my day has made going to sleep a little easier
and it made getting out of bed easier to. I was able to really enjoy thinking back and reflecting on all
people has done. My mood has changed and my thought process has dramatically changed too. This
activity has also made me live in the moments more before I would not pay attention to my
surrounding but I was able to after I became more aware of my

Essay on The Grateful Dead's Effect on Counter Culture
Jacqueline Smudzinski
Thinking and Writing 1302–60
Bouchard
September 29, 2013
The Grateful Dead "You've got to listen to the heavens, you got to try to understand. The greatness
of their movement is just as small as it is grand." Most young adults of my generation do not know
who The Grateful Dead are, but they unknowingly dawn the apparels and slang created in the
counterculture of the bands following the Deadheads. The band, The Grateful Dead, became popular
in the 60s and carried out wide spread recognition and fame into the 80s. Their calming, peace–
promoting music became popular because it 'transported' people, it took them away from whatever
they were going through in their life and set them on a new path. Fans of the band ... Show more

In many cases, some words were adopted from Rastafarian roots. Others were words they picked up
and modified throughout their travels. An example of a Rastafarian word adopted by the Deadhead
culture is Raza Unida, meaning we are all in everything together. That expression was particularly
popular with the Deadheads because they experienced the meaning. They all felt connected to each
other through their shared experiences and desires. Some other expressions that became popular at
the time included gully, meaning real good, and say–bra, meaning what's up. Many of the
Deadheads wore tie–dyed clothes, Birkenstock sandals, and dreadlocks. Supporters of the free love,
psychedelic movement, easily adopted this look.
Due to the fact that the band was traveling around so much, the Deadheads spread their subculture
throughout the United States. Because it was such a prominent time for hippies and peace, the way
the Dead Heads lived was appealing to so many people. People who were searching from freedom
from parents, government, and school happily joined the Deadheads on their journey when they
passed through their town. Many people even left their families behind to join the movement. The
community connected people from different places and backgrounds that wanted to experience the
music and live their lives in the same way. The band took the listeners on a journey that they could
all relate to, especially those living and moving with

Essay On Grateful Dead

  • 1. Essay on Grateful Dead Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead, the most popular so called underground band of all time. This band has underwent many changes, some good and others bad throughout their thirty or so years of performing. I plan to prove that a band that has remained together for thirty plus years isn't as easy as many would assume. In fact I would have to say the "down" times in the band almost equal the outrageously great time they had. Despite all the down times the amazing music of the Grateful Dead always made it possible to bring smiles to empty faces anytime anywhere. Even now that the bands figure head (Jerry Garcia) has passed on, the family that he created (Deadheads) and left behind will never forget him or his music. The very underground ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I know that if the Acid Tests had never happened we would have been just another band," stated Phil Lesh in a nineteen eighties interview. This is now where the Grateful Dead were born as we know them today. The name, Grateful Dead as every deadhead knows, choose itself when Garcia flipped open an old dictionary at Phil's house, "and there it was...It was one of those moments," he told Rolling Stone, "like everything else on the page went blank, diffuse, just sorta oozed away, and there it was grateful dead. Big black letters edged all around in gold, man, blasting out at me, such a stunning combination." A veritable fat trip. "So I said, 'How about Grateful Dead,' and that was it." The band was smoking a superpsychedelic DMT. In another, later account, Garcia didn't like the name at first but thought is was just to powerful to ignore. Weir and Kreutzmann didn't like it either but "people started calling us that and it just started, Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead..." Here is the definition of the word Grateful Dead in the 1955 Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary. GRATEFUL DEAD– The motif of a cycle of folk tales which begins with the hero's coming upon a group of people ill–treating or refusing to bury the corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last penny, either to pay the man's debts or to give him a decent burial. Within a few hours he meets with a traveling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Gospel And The Grateful Dead Analysis The Gospel and the Grateful Dead by The Rev. Dr. Pitman B. Potter discussed the spiritual themes present through the work of the Grateful Dead. This book went into great detail and examined the lyrics and actions of the band. The themes in this book directly reflected the spiritual and biblical values of community, and sharing, as well as the importance of thanksgiving and praise. One of the biggest messages that is present through the entire novel is the theme of community. Potter uses Brandelius' quote, "Musical performances too were structured as community events–in some cases, dance classes–and funded on a shoestring budget with little, if any, actual profit returning to the band." (Potter, 21) This quote directly represents how The Grateful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hart said, "God is sound." (Potter, 58) This quote resonated with me because no three words have ever spoken more truth. Coming from a musical, Catholic background, I have always been told that singing is praying twice. Music truly is a gift from God because God gave us the ability to hear. So, the question comes up, what does God want us to hear? I think that God ultimately wants us to hear his voice and know his will. Potter throws in an interesting quote by Jackson, "Music goes back before language does. And music is like the key to a whole spiritual existence which this society doesn't even talk about. We know it's there." (Potter, 58) This quote reminds me of lyrics to one of my favorite songs of all time. Stevie Wonder wrote, "Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand." (Sir Duke) Also, Wonder wrote, "Music knows it is and always will be one of the things that life just won't quit." (Sir Duke) Relating these lyrics to the quote, it makes me realize that the lyrics are not what make up the song. The music being played, however, is what makes music important. Music truly is a universal language. Throughout the world, different cultures speak different languages. They write differently and speak differently. However, pick up a piece of sheet music in any location of the world, and it will always be the same. There will be a staff with notes, clefs, measures, and a time signature. Music is a language within itself. It is not taught by being spoken, rather it is taught by being played. So, music connects the world into a community. Music creates a universal bond that is unlike any other. This bond is spiritual on a different level. Music is timeless because no matter what year, someone will always be able to play the music. This spiritual bond connects us throughout the world. I think that ultimately, through sound, God is connecting us to be one. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Television Show Freaks And Geeks Created By Paul Feig... Television is a huge part of the daily lives of human beings. The things that people see on screen help them form their own values and opinions about the world around them. Television is also a great source for people to feel represented through fictional characters and events. And for teenagers, it is even more important to find something they can relate to during a period in their life when they are still trying to figure out who they are in society. High school is a place for teenagers to build an idea of what kind of people they want to be in the future, and the decisions they make could affect the rest of their lives. When Bill asks his friends to go with him, Sam dismisses the idea of going and asks instead, "Do you want to stay a geek for your whole life?" Sam and Neil start to see science fiction as something that wasn't "cool' anymore and wanted to do things that were considered "cool" like everyone else at school. They think that the definition of being cool is being popular or going to social events like make out parties. Sam and Neal are letting what society views as "cool" take over their true identities. Society affects the way people think of themselves, and Sam and Neal are lead to think that have to be like everyone else to fit into society. Hanging out with Lindsay causes the Freaks to rethink what they value in their lives and what they want to strive for in the future. Lindsay is very smart, unlike the Freaks, and she helps motivate the Freaks to start thinking about the importance of education. Spending time with the Freaks causes them to notice her good grades and that makes them wish they could be the same as her. In "Looks and Books", Lindsay crashes her dad's car because of the freaks, and stops hanging out with the freaks and decides to rejoin the mathletes. • 7. Drug Use Of Drugs Drug use has it's place in all parts of the culture that was built in the United States whether it may be in sports, music, medicine, social norms, and even recreational use. Everyday things like Coca Cola use to have cocaine inside of the product to make the soda more addicting to the consumer. Athletes adopted different drugs as a means of enhancing their performances in their prospective sports as well as using them as a means to stay healthy throughout their season and to recover quicker . Musicians sometimes used drugs as an inspiration to write new music as well as recreationally to have fun. This created the stereotype that all rockstars use some form of hard drugs. As well as the stereotype of the meathead jock who juices up everyday before a big game. Musicians across the country continue to be affected and changed by drug use. Musicians such as Miley Cyrus, Snoop dogg , Wiz Khalifa, and more. Some bands even use certain drugs to get some inspiration for their music. The most famous example is the Beatles's hit song Lucy and the Sky of Diamonds which many have questioned to be named after the many trips the beatles had off of LSD as you can shorten the title to LSD which was the drug they most commonly used at the time. The Beatles would use benzedrine in the days before they became the group of men they are known as today. The Beatles continued to progress onto harder drugs such as Cannabis and LSD as they became more famous and towards the end of the 1960s. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. How the Hippies Counterculture Transformed Music Essay In the 1950's and 1960's, rebellion and music were synonymous. The 1950's brought widespread attention to a new kind of music coined as "Rock 'n' Roll". Because parents deemed the music as sinful, the youth used it to establish an identity for themselvess. In the 1960's, the rebellion was given a collective charge when young adults voiced displeasure over the country's entrance into the Vietnam War and the use of nuclear weapons. One group within this movement was coined the "hippies". This paper will discuss the beliefs of the hippies of Haight–Ashbury in San Francisco, California and illustrate how the hippie "counterculture" transformed into an evolution of music, in the making of protest songs and the new "psychedelic" sound. In his book titled The Making of a Counterculture: Reflections on the Technocratic Society and Its Youthful Opposition, historian Theodore Roszak described a "counterculture" as typically involving disapproval or an attempted dismissal of those institutions which presently hold some level of dominance, while simultaneously having hope for an improved life in a new society, in terms of thinking and being. There has been some level of debate, discussing whether or not the hippie movement of the 1960's and 1970's matched this definition. Was the movement solely a product of the hippie's clustered university lifestyle, where common experimentation with drugs as well as political activism served as their own sources of rebellion? This notion was argued by anthropologist William L. Partridge, in his case study titled The Hippie Ghetto: The Natural History of a Subculture. Roszak argues in his book about a hippie rejection of technocracy: the system of organizations and elite experts that influences society to attach itself to the importance of efficiency, rationalizing, planning, and necessity, which hippies felt was clearly depicted by the nuclear arms race and fight against communism between the United States and U.S.S.R. ... • 11. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol... Social Landscape Change The short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates was published in 1966, which in turn happened to be one of the most complicated decades in history. A time of misdirected hatred, recreational substance usage, and a cloak of death surrounding the world. As a result, the social norms of the time period are expressed in Oates short story through language, imagery, and allusions. Oates begins her story much like any other author showing a dysfunctional family, with depictions of dysfunction, rebellion, and mindlessness of those who are most important. Connie, the main character, is shown as the redheaded step child so to speak, she is neglected by her father and receives nothing but negativity from her mother. Now, there is always the argument that Connie is an immature teenager who has not yet had to grow up and face the music of responsibility; however, the lack of defined parental structure in her life hinders her capability to flourish as a young adult. For example, Oates writes "Their father was away at work most of the time and when he came home he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed. He didn't bother talking much to them, but around his bent head Connie's mother kept picking at her until Connie wished her mother was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over." (Oates, 468) The excerpt describes the relationship of Connie and her parents to a tee with the description of the ignorance of her father and the personal anguish with her mother. Oates uses language to paint the picture she wants the reader to see and follows through on the image she has manifested. Furthermore, Oates uses descriptive language throughout the short story which further develops the characters and the relationships between Connie and everyone else. For example, when Oates writes about Connie's sister, June, she depicts her as "plain" and "chunky" neither of which sound appealing; however, when Connie is described she is clearly labeled "pretty and that was everything". With the usage of descriptive language, Oates is also creating the cookie cutter rival image. From the beginning, Oates has given one sister and advantage that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Art, Literature And Society From 1955-1970 Essay examples Fear and Loathing in a Clockwork AgeAh! The noble search for identity. That intangible achievement that all artists lust after and lay in torment over. And during the post war era that struggle reached incredible magnitudes. The world cried out for legions of anti–heroes, who were only virtuous in their unapologetic and brutally honest lack of virtue. And the art world provided as many counter culture messiahs as was needed to "Damn the Man". To the Beats the only solution to a life of domestic stagnation was to pack up and let life lead you down one winding road after another. There was a certain comfort in the unknown. Ambiguity turned survival into a triviality, while one could find the deepest meaning in chance and whimsy. When mere existence doesn't seem to be guaranteed it's the little moments of perfection that become one's focus. No other Beat poet understood that concept as well as Jack Kerouac. "Jack Kerouac single handedly created the beat generation. Although Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and William Burroughs Brought their separate and cumulative madness to the beat generation, it was Kerouac who was the Unifying Principle." (Krim,p.4)While Kerouac certainly lived for the moment it would be missing the whole point of his work to claim that was just trying to get his kicks in before it was over. If anything, he eagerly awaited his termination. And found his solace in moments of pure tranquillity, since they were the closest he could come to the state he named the Golden Eternity, which he believed awaited him after death. This is a historic venue for the Grateful Dead and the Deadheads, because this was an atmosphere that always seemed to be far more electric than most. Although the Grateful Dead was a great live act throughout the entire existence of the band, many of the band members admit during the 89 & 90 tours, they were at their best. To open the concert, the band members claim the stage to a roaring crowd, particularly focused upon Jerry Garcia. With very little preparation time, the band jumped right into their first song, without hesitation. This stood out to me because all of the concerts I have seen live, they'll spend quite some time tuning, and chatting up the crowd. This crowd sure did not need the pep talk, because of the virve already presented by the crowd. The opening song was "Let the Good Times Roll." With this song as an opening and a more prominent Grateful Dead hit, the aura of the concert had already been set. Each singer of the band had their own verse in this song, to really get the crowd engaged with each member. A very distinguishing piece of the Grateful Dead was that they had ... • 17. Why Should You Be Grateful Why should you be grateful in life? Following are 10 insights that I 've gathered over the years that have helped me understand more about why I want to practice gratitude now and forever. I think that if you are not feeling too grateful today or struggling with the concept of gratitude and how it works in life, they will help you feel better, so read on! 1. You Can 't Teach Someone Else To Be Grateful Unless They Want To Be Taught You can create the best gratitude book, show, or course in the world and you will still not be able to help some people be grateful if they are not looking for a way to be more grateful. When it comes to gratitude, this is something you must remember or you will be frustrated more often than not with other people. Almost all of us have a bitter or angry person in our lives who complains about everything and everyone. Most of us who understand gratitude (or are at least a little bit more aware of what life has to offer us) and want to be happier in our lives have tried to help these people see all the good things in their life and failed. For me, I spent countless hours trying to get someone very close to me to understand that there is a lot to be grateful for in this life, such as his wife, his kids, his home, his health, and his wealth. He didn 't see any of these things in a positive light because he was too focused on the stress he had and the events, circumstances, and people who he saw in a negative light. As a child, he listened to their albums on cassette tapes in the car, and as a college student, he attended live performances. The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 in Palo Alto, CA. It was known for its eclectic, psychedelic rock style, which was sculpted amid the San Franciscan countercultural movement of the 1960s. The song's story follows a young man, walking around the local square, who is entranced by a young woman with "scarlet begonias tucked into her curls" (Grateful Dead). She also had "rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes," a line that has stuck with Mike because of how the image reminds him of the 70s, and as an extension, the ideas of freedom and being carefree. Mike doesn't have much of an opinion about the lyrics of "Fire on the Mountain", but he does love the rhythm and the bass guitar because "it just makes anybody want to dance" (Michael Peller). However, I found the lyrics to be meaningful in ways related to Mike's enjoyment of the song. The line, "fire, fire on the mountain", is repeated throughout the song, and almost sounds like an urgent call for help. Despite this, the beat and music rolls on. The song pokes fun at a "long distance runner" who continues to make and dance to music even as "a dragon with matches" is "loose on the town". During this time, drugs were a very popular part of the hippie culture and the prevalence of LSD helped to create the distinct genre of psychedelic music. Many bands and artists such as The Beatles, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Grateful Dead were heavily influenced by LSD, which led to the creation of some great music. This decade was full of adventure, music, sex, drugs, and exploration, which was all made possible due to this powerful and trippy drug. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many references to LSD in songs from this time due to the big influence it had on the artists who wrote them. In order to produce the psychedelic feel, the artists would write "esoteric lyrics, often describing dreams, visions, or hallucinations" as well as other techniques such as distorting the sound, playing sections of the song backwards, and delaying sounds. Another important part of psychedelic rock is the influence of Indian music. Bands such as The Beatles popularized this technique of using "exotic instruments like the sitar, the tambura, and the tabla" in their music (Psychedelic Rock). LSD started being associated with music when Ken Kasey would hold acid tests (essentially big parties where everyone was given the drug) where Grateful Dead, formerly known as Warlocks, would play as the house band. These parties gave them recognition in the San Francisco area and their popularity soon skyrocketed. Although their studio albums were not a great hit, their live concerts were very popular (Keno). This lead the way to concerts surrounded by the use of LSD. Everyone would indulge in the substance and then music would be played for everyone to enjoy. The couple working on the land is described as a "perfect sympathy of movement", implying that there is a faultless harmony and order to their work. Then she details how everything comes from and returns to the earth and how everything undergoes a cycle of life and death. Buck makes sure to repeat the phrase "over" in order to emphasize the cyclicity of this process. She utilizes commas to separate parts of the sentence, lengthening the sentence, developing a calm attitude at least on part of the writer. Following that, the word "so" is used to display the inherent inevitability of this process. The short, terse sentence "Each had his turn at the earth" contrasts with the lengthy descriptive sentences previous to it to display what the author feels is the essence of the cycle. Similarly, in "Let it Grow", the songwriters express the cyclicity of nature when he describes how the plow cuts "round and round"; how the the ground is "becoming" to the next season ; and how the "black dirt [is] live again". The cycle is briefly described when the songwriter says "Seasons round, creatures great and small, up and down as we rise and fall". In essence, both excerpts explore the natural cycle of life. However, the excerpt from the novel discusses cooperation. A subtle metaphor is created where O– lan represents the Earth and the production of a child is likened to the cultivation of the land. By doing this, Phish and the Dead opened up a new hobby; and other bands have gone along with open taping (e.g. Dave Matthews Band, Moe., Bela Fleck). Although these two bands do similar things with their music, the music itself is considerably different. I think the reason Phish is labeled "Children of the Dead" is because of their early years playing small gigs at Nector's bar in Vermont. They were just starting out, and did not have enough original songs to have a complete set list. This forced Phish to do many cover songs. Mike Gordon (bassist), the only real Dead fan in Phish coaxed his fellow band mates to cover some Grateful Dead tunes, along with covers from other various artists and their own originals. • 49. Misconceptions Of Being Grateful A common misconception in the word "grateful" is that the woman or man is happy because of the things they are grateful for. This could not be more incorrect. Happiness is subjective, since you can be grateful without being happy, and vice versa. Being grateful is just a state of contentedness about certain blessings one has been privileged with. I, for one, am appreciative of many things in my fortunate life; however, I am not necessarily happy. One of the things I am grateful for is my status in society. Being a Caucasian female, I feed off the benefits of white privilege. I am thankful for the lack of discrimination, direct and indirect, by common media and society, as well as the opportunities I am handed to by modern American society ... People in general are not disgusted by me, and they do not condemn me or say I will "burn in Hell" for my character. They do not use slurs about me or protest my existence. I can get married anywhere I want. My identity is romanticized as a "Juliet" or an "Eve" and passed as regular, run– of–the–mill activity. If I was a member of the LGBT+ community, in some countries I would be executed. People would joke and demean my identity, using inappropriate slurs to describe me. Certain groups of people would feel disgusted by my existence and try to "cure" me of my unorthodox biology. If I belonged to a different religion, such as Islam, I would be called a terrorist, stared at in fear, and face difficulty by national security. I had all the things I wanted, and I never was grateful for these things. But when my Papa died and all of our riches were taken, we were forced into Mexican working camps. Now we were poor and had almost nothing. All those things were taken away from me. I have come to appreciate everything I have. I thought I would have riches forever, but now I realized that you shouldn't take things for granted, and be grateful for the things you have. I lived in a beautiful farm in Mexico with my Mama and Papa. Everything was perfect. I would walk through the red rose bushes with my Papa. He would teach me to lay down in the fields, and listen for the heartbeat of the earth. We would hear the "Bump bump" of the Earth. The dirt was rough on our faces and we could feel a soft breeze. We had servants that would do everything for us. I never had to do anything for myself. We had riches and I had everything I wanted, and I never thought that would change. I was getting ready for my 13th birthday. I would have a great party. It was grape harvesting time, so the servants were harvesting grapes. The grape rows looked like evenly spaced purple streams. The group was formed in 1965 by bluegrass – enthusiast Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan on vocals and organ, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, classical music student Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. From the beginning, they brought together a variety of influences, from Garcia's country background to Pigpen's feeling for blues (his father was an R&B radio DJ) and Lesh's education in contemporary serious" music. Without Jerry's influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it's distinct earthy timbre or feel that has been extremely significant in attracting their particular following. Another contribution to the Dead's style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on the trumpet, Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead's then nucleus, The Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style usually finds his fingers running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right), dropping what are affectionately known to fans as "Phil Bombs", furiously low frequency notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can only be created with a five or six string bass. As one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles together could create somewhat of an interesting style. Well, it only gets better. Bill Kreutzmann, the "heartbeat" of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the age of eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be heavily involved in the "rock and roll" scene. As a teen, Kreutzmann even created rock in roll bands in which to play, as the interest was barely there. Its lineup included a young folk guitarist named Bob Weir and a blues lover, Ron McKernan, known to his friends as "Pigpen" for his often disorderly appearance. The group played a mix of blues, country, and folk, and Pigpen became the frontman, singing Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins tunes. Then in February 1964, the Beatles made their historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and virtually overnight, youth culture was imbued with a new spirit and sense of identity. Gracia understood the group's promise after seeing its first film, A Hard Day's Night. As a result, the folky purism of Mother McCree's all–acoustic form began to seem rather limited and uninteresting to Garcia and many of the other band members, and before long the ensemble was transformed into the Warlocks. A few dropped out, but they were soon joined by two more; Bill Kreutzmann, and Phil Lesh. • 69. LSD: An Analysis Following the discovery of LSD in 1943 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, it did not take too long for people to realize the power and promise of the drug (MacDonald, 1995). It was the first time ever that radically consciousness–altering drugs were available to and consumed by millions in an industrial society (Johnson, 2011). Already by the early sixties, the youth countercultures in California –especially in San Francisco– had embraced the use of psychedelic drugs, with the first major underground LSD factory created by Owsley Stanley (Johnson, 2011). And yet, though elements within psychedelia's penumbra had projects and believed in particular aims and values, according to Grunenberg & Harris (2005), psychedelia was not a movement, it was a mind manifesting experience that stimulated artists to create a new artistic style. Around 1964 the Merry Pranksters, a nonchalant group that developed around novelist Ken Kesey, sponsored the 'Acid Tests', a series of parties held by Kesey in the San Francisco area, and which were entirely centered on the use of LSD (supplied by Stanley) (Class). The greatness of their movement is just as small as it is grand." Most young adults of my generation do not know who The Grateful Dead are, but they unknowingly dawn the apparels and slang created in the counterculture of the bands following the Deadheads. The band, The Grateful Dead, became popular in the 60s and carried out wide spread recognition and fame into the 80s. An example of a Rastafarian word adopted by the Deadhead culture is Raza Unida, meaning we are all in everything together. That expression was particularly popular with the Deadheads because they experienced the meaning. They all felt connected to each other through their shared experiences and desires. Some other expressions that became popular at the time included gully, meaning real good, and say–bra, meaning what's up. Many of the Deadheads wore tie–dyed clothes, Birkenstock sandals, and dreadlocks. Supporters of the free love, psychedelic movement, easily adopted this look.
