The document summarizes the opening sequence created for a film project titled "The Voice Inside." Key details include:
1) The opening sequence was designed to conform to conventions of the genre by including a title sequence and introducing the main character.
2) Specific techniques were copied from the film "Jennifer's Body" including mentioning the production company in the opening.
3) The opening aims to intrigue audiences and raise questions through techniques like an extreme close-up text message implying a breakup and revealing only a character's hands at first.
4) Shots of the main character holding a knife are intended to position her as the potential killer, going against expectations of a male killer.
2. Our film opening conforms to the conventions of a real media product. For
example the use of a title sequence; when creating the title sequence for
‘The Voice inside’ we looked at examples of other counter-culture teen
horror films to try and imitate the title sequence that was presented.
For example we tried to follow the conventions of the title sequence that
were portrayed in the opening sequence of ‘Jennifer's body’ -as I could easily
compare my movie with it also having a female as the lead protagonist.
In ‘Jennifer’s Body’, we noticed that the production and distribution company
where mentioned in the opening. We copied this sequence to ensure that
we met the criteria needed for our main task and spread the distribution
company and production company across our opening sequence.
QUESTION 1
3. A key convention of an opening sequence is that it should captivate the audience
through out, by raising questions and creating mystery. Our opening sequence
conforms to these conventions, for example; at the very start of the opening we
see an XCU shot of a person texting- the text shows a break up text ‘We need to
stop hanging around so much, we are over for good.’ - this raises questions like
‘Why has this person been dumped’ ‘how will the person who has been dump take
this’
Another convention of an opening sequence is introduction of the main characters.
Like in Jennifer's body, the main protagonist is seen first. I aimed to copy this by
revealing only the hands of one of the main characters, which helps to raise
suspicion ‘Who is the person texting?”. At the end of our opening, we then
included a few scenes of the main protagonist ‘Louisa’ (played by mwah) running a
knife along the railings of a gate. Placing a girl in this murderous light, gives the
viewer the impression that ‘Louisa’ is the killer, and that she’s about to do
something mental/crazy. Having a female act as the murder in the film goes against
the stereotypical issues seen in other films, were the audiences expects the killer
to be a male protagonist.
All the openings that we have watched, relating to our Counter-Culture teen horror
genre, we have seen a lot of XCU shots and noticed that this was key if we wanted
to accomplish that intensified atmosphere. I think that it is important to include
XCU shots because it creates dramatic impact increasing the effect of the audience.
4. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT PRESETNT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS
Our media product counteract the stereotypes set in motion for the genre hence it
being “Counter” culture teen horror. The protagonist, being a female and of BLACK
ASIAN ethnicity, also develops a USP and therefore creates a healthy niche market.
Our media product portrays many aspects of stereotypical conventions, for example
teenage behavior; when Francesca mocks Louisa after learning she has just been
dumped.
This is the type of stereotypical teenage behavior that one would expect to see in a
teen horror film, but our opening doesn't’t conform to all the stereotypes, for
example; Louisa and Tom are a Mixed race couple. Having the main characters of our
opening being a mix race couple allows us to reach out to a wider target audience,
because more people can relate and identify with the characters.
Our media product conveys how teenagers of this century are evolving and therefore
challenges mainstream ideas, my protagonist challenges the typical stereotypes
because my killer is female instead of male, also she is of Black and Asian ethnicity.
5. What kind of media institutions might describe your media product and why?
Our distributor is an independent company, as we are working with a low budget film and its not
likely for us to get a big distributor. Potential distributors would be companies such as ‘WARP’ as
they are an independent low budget company.
The advertising of our film will be progressed through posters, film festivals, YouTube, word of
mouth and social networking site publications. The social networking sites play a major part in
the promotion of our film, because in todays society sites such as twitter and Facebook are
extremely popular with our target audience.
We would try and market our film online. Marketing our film online is very appropriate
because our film is marketed at 16-24 year olds who generally use the Internet regularly and
are very in touch with modern technology. We can use social media websites like Facebook,
twitter. Facebook will be particularly effective because a vast majority of 16-24 year olds
regularly use Facebook. By making a Facebook page for our film, our audience will have the
ability to like the page. When one person likes our page, all of their friends will see our page
on their news feed. This means that we can attract a lot of attention and raise interest about
our film. People could post questions on our page regarding our film and we could right
statuses about our release date, merchandise and other information regarding our film. We
would upload to YouTube because we want our film to be noticed by a wider circle of people,
not just friends and mutual friends. Uploading our opening to YouTube is the best way to get
people to watch it. YouTube is extremely popular especially amongst our target audience. We
could tag our video so that when people search for words that we have tagged, our video
will come up. From YouTube we can put our opening sequence onto twitter, Facebook and
6. Our target audience for our media product is females from the ages 16 - 18, however
my team are aware the the demographic age, will inevitably widen as older
generations are interested in teenage behavior. Our film is targeted at students who
attend college or even secondary school, and that share similar hobbies such as, social
networking, partying, drinking
DEMOGRAPHIC:
• Target audience: Teenagers 16-18
• Age classification: 16+
• Gender: Mostly females (some males)
• Ethnicity: Diverse and multicultural
• Class: Middle Class & working class
• Hobbies: Partying, clubbing, drinking, going out for drinks, going
to the cinema
• Food: Might not have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Junk food, fast
food eg McDonalds, Sams, PFC
• Shopping: Local high street, high street brands
• Leisure: Socializing with friends in groups
7. How did we attract/ address audience
We tried to address our audience using events that would normally
take place in their lives, for example they might be going though a
break up, or broken up with someone, or a friend of theirs might be
going through a break up. The events seen in our opening will be
more familiar with teenagers and students, this will help the target
audience to relate and identify with the characters in the opening
sequence, resulting in a more personal effect making our opening
sequence more attractive.
The mise en scene was also closely thought about during the completion of our opening.
We had to make sure that the characters in the scene dressed appropriately, in order to
make the opening more realistic and believable. We also included relevant props that
our target audience would come across in their daily lives, for example near the ending
of the opening Tom is seen lighting a cigarette outside of the institution. This is what our
target audience would normally result to, when they are stressed or dealing with a
difficult situation.
8. Props:
Tom is an example of a
stereotypical student, who
attends college and is going
through a break up with his
girlfriend.
Screen shot of tom,
taken from ‘The Voice
inside’ We decided to
take this image to give an
example of how we used
props to address our
target audience.
XCU SHOTS:
To attract our target
audience, we used a range
of XCU shots. XCU shots are
used to create dramatic
impact, we used XCU to
conform to this and also to
help the audience
understand the story better.
9. When we first went out to shoot the prelim, working the camera proved to be difficult, but as
we progressed further into our opening sequence, we found out different angles and
positioning of the camera that helped us to capture each scene. For example, when filimg XCU
shots we found it easier to press zoom, rather than walking forward which made the image
shaky.
When Editing our film, we used a program called iMovie. iMovie enabled us to cut and slice
relevant shots, and drop and drag scenes that ran smoothly along side each other. It also
enabled us to change the volume of the background sounds, and repeat certain parts of
dialogue to create an echo effect. We were also able to drag and drop clips onto the timeline on
iMovie which helped us to see if the clips we sorted worked well together.
10. Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product
Since the preliminary, I feel that I have developed in using iMovie,
because at the start I found it difficult to use but by the time I got to
editing our opening sequence, I felt confident enough to edit the
whole thing myself.
