• Level of society; lower class, middle class, upper class

• 1840: First stamp Penny Black was issued.
• 1846: Swing Machine were invented by
Elias Howe
• 1851: The “Great Exhibition” display
manufactured goods. Interchange of both
cultural and artistic ideas all across Europe.
• 1855: Ford Madox Brown, painted the 'Last
of England‘
• 1858: William Perkin invented mauve color
• 1894: Moving pictures(cinematograph)
invented by Lumiere brothers.
• 1901: Queen Victoria died and Edward Vll
was made King.
4. 1837-1901
Trends: Hemlines lengthened, sleeves became
narrower, Detachable undersleeves. Cage
crinoline the corset was a measure of decency
Silhouette: Less flamboyant, narrow and
sloping shoulder, low and pointed Waist, bell
shaped skirt
Fabric: pure silks, cottons and woollens, Taffeta,
satin, cottons like muslin or tarlatan, valvet,
Brocade
Colours: Light colours for evening wear pale
and dark, vegetable dyes, magenta, electric
blue or vivid yellow
