2. Objective 6 of Sustainable Development- Clean water and sanitation, includes various themes, from the
protection of aquatic ecosystems of the Danube Delta to the increasing efficiency in management and supplying the
population with clean, drinking water.
Targets:
1. By 2030, achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
2. By 2030, improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating waste disposal and minimizing hazardous
chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing global recycling
and reuse.
4. By 2030, the substantial increase in water efficiency in all sector and ensuring a sustainable process of capture and
supply of drinking water to address water scarcity and to substantially reduce the number of people suffering from
water scarcity.
5. By 2030, the implementation of integrate water resource management at all levels, including , where appropriate,
through cross-border cooperation.
6. By 2030, the protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers ,
aquifers and lakes.
3. What does it mean for Romania?
Romania's water resources have the peculiarity that 97.8% of the hydrographic network is collected by the
Danube River with a length of 1,075 km across the country (out of a total of 2,860 km). Over the years,
anthropogenic activities have affected the quality of surface and underground water, especially groundwater. Only
57.5% of the total length of the monitored rivers can be used for centralized drinking water supply. Out of the total
potential resources, only 45.5% are technically usable mainly due to the contamination of resources. On a medium
and long term, satisfying water requirements of the population, industry, agriculture and other uses is not possible in
Romania without the completion of extensive hydro-technical works that redistribute hydrological resources in time
and space (dams, storage lakes, inter-basin flow rates.
4. Data on population access to water and sewage
In 2013, 779 water supply systems were assembled on the territory of the country, of which 605 are public-owned,
171-private, 3-mixed. Of the total aqueducts, there are 721 systems (92.5%) or 44 aqueducts more than in the previous
year and 159 more compared to 2009.
5. The consequences of water pollution
Environment:
Possibility of contamination or chemical pollution of aquatic animals;
Bacteriological contamination, chemical or radioactive pollution of vegetables or fruits;
Destruction of the microbial flora of the water, which leads to the decrease of the disposal capacity to the various
polluters present at one time.
Health:
Most diseases in the body are caused by the fact that people do not drink enough water or that water is not good
enough.
Infectious diseases: dysentery
Viral diseases: epidemic hepatitis
Infective diseases : - Lead intoxication:
-Mercury intoxication: insomnia
-Zinc intoxication: epigastric pain
6. Even though we are not very good at preventing pollution we also have many beautiful places, such as:
1. Cascade Bigar-Following a top of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world (top achieved in the international
press), the Bigar Waterfall in Caras-Severin County was ranked as the first.
The Bigar Waterfall is unique in the world for the flow of the water, but also because it is positioned on the Parallel 45
line.
7. 2.The Horses Cascade-Cailor Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Romania. It is located in the north-eastern part of the
Borsa Mountains, near the tourist resort of Borsa. The waterfall is located at an altitude of 1300 meters and the it is 90
meters high. The water flows out of a glacier circle and over a steeply valley named Horseshoe Bridge.
8. 3.Waterfall Beusnita-The Beusnita waterfall is considered the wonder of Caras Severin county. A legend says that water
starts from the bride's veil of a beautiful shepherd. Tip: Near the Beusnita Falls there is the Ochiul Beiului Lake, a lake
with blue, crystalline water that has never frozen.
