Description
Character education is all about teaching our students to be morally and
politically correct citizens. It is our responsibility as educators to not only teach
math and reading in the classrooms, but to also teach manners, morals, and
respect for the student’s self and others.
Characteristics
Developing morals
Civics
Ethical reasoning
Conflict resolution
Manners
Interpersonal relations
Respect (self)
The Importance
Character education is important because character is who you are and how you
act. It is about being caring, respectful, trustful, and fair and people will notice
when you portray these traits, in your everyday actions.
As educators, we spend the majority of the day with the students, meaning we
have a lot of influence on them. It is our job to make sure that we are displaying
good manners and moral behavior so we can create a positive school
environment and create good future citizens of society. Having good character is
important in the student’s future endeavors.
Role It Plays
“Our students are facing many emerging issues such as global warming, famine,
poverty, health issues, a global population explosion and other environmental
and social issues” (“What is 21st Century Education?”).
While educating them on studies in the classroom, it is important that we
educate them on how to have good character in the daily issues that they face in
society.

Specific Example
A specific example of how character education could be used in the classroom is
teaching the students internet etiquette and safety. It is important that our
students are aware of these things because sometimes they don’t know that
what they say and do on the internet could affect their future.
We could teach the students about cyber bullying by having two teachers make
up a skit about cyber bullying. They could record themselves, upload the video to
YouTube, and then show it to the students one day in class. After the students
view the video, we could have a class discussion about what the students saw in
the video, what was right, what was wrong, how it made them feel, etc. This
would make students aware of the issue and teach them how to deal with it if
they ever had it happen to them or someone they know.
Conclusion
In conclusion, character education is necessary and important in classrooms. It is
essential that students learn about manners and morals, in addition to actual
academics, so that they will grow into intelligent, kind, and respectable citizens
of society.
