3. 1. Yes-- Student Blogs Allowed!
In D.C., 229 faculty members were laid off. McKinley Tech High
school students suffered by losing 15 of their instructors and/or
counselors. Students went to the streets to protest, but this turned into a
bad idea when a student and an adult were arrested by the police.
Teacher Gideon Sanders knew where to take this anger the students had
and put it safely. He introduced blogging to the students earlier in the
year as a part of the schools plan to be the highest-performing school in
the nation. Sanders told his students this: ―The keystroke is mightier
than the sword‖ (Zuger, 2010). Sanders knew how important it is for
students to express themselves as a apart of the learning process. He
said that this ―strengthens students’ desire to be part of the learning
process‖ (Zuger, 2010). He also said that he notices more work being
turned in and the work being done more completely.

4. ―Yes—Student blogs allowed!‖ cont.
How to make student blogs work:
1. Make time in lab specifically for blogging.
-for students that don’t have internet access at home.
2. Make blog policy guidelines.
-also, teach consequences of putting bad things on the internet.
3. Make known the goal of writing in the blog.
-speak out and have a voice in the community on meaningful topics.
4. Put discussion starters on blog that tie into lessons.
-Meaningful discussion starters can easily catch the students initial
attention.
5. Encourage daily blogging habits that encourage an active community.
5. Personal Reflection on Student Blogs
Personally, I wish that I could’ve had this opportunity
as a high school student. I always had my own personal
blog, but I never thought to write about the world
around me and the issues in it. I think student blogging
makes our stances on the issues more apparent to us.
That can be a helpful reminder to stand up for
something we believe in or become an activists in the
community. Blogging also gives students the chance to
let other people become aware of issues and get
feedback to their ideas. Blogging can be very useful
when used correctly in a classroom.

6. 2.Using Technology to Promote Expression and Self-Concept
The article starts off with a poem that talks about thoughts
and how we need to release them. Then, it goes into asking
us the question ―what if we couldn't speak or write? What if
our ideas couldn't escape from our head?‖ The article talks
about people with disabilities and how technology is their
own means of expressing their thoughts. They also go on to
say that these technologies are used by all students, not just
those with disabilities. The benefits of using them are that
students become involved in the creative process and are
able to express themselves in ways that are not possible in
traditional school tasks.
7. Using Technology cont.
―We had a jar with a butterfly.
We opened the lid and it flew to the sky.
And there are things inside my head
Waiting to be thought or said,
Dreams and jokes and wonderings are
Locked inside, like a butterfly jar.
But then, when you are here with me,
I can open the lid and set them free.‖
Moss, 1989
8. Personal Reflection on technology
I, personally, really agree with the poem in the
introduction that I put in the previous slide.
Thoughts can be powerful tools in this world. The
article shows how students can utilize their thoughts
for the better. I definitely think that technology helps
teachers break free from the boring, traditional ways
of learning.

9. 3. Multimedia Serves Youths' Desire to Express
Themselves
A student named Consuelo Molina was
shy and never really engaged in school.
However, when she found the San
Fernando Education Technology Team
(SFETT) at her high school, it helped
her to share her opinions around the
world. The teacher and founder of
SFETT praises her for her passion and
interest. Another student, Marisol
Garcia, chose SFETT over cheerleading
which was ―a really big deal.‖ She said
she chose it because it’s more than just
a class. It was hard work that she looks
forward to. She added that if more
class were hands-on like this one then
students would learn more.
10. Multimedia cont.
SFETT works because it focuses on:
Planning.
Building leaders and futures.
Teamwork and lifelong learning.

11. Personal Reflection on multimedia
I agree with the students quotes from this article most of
all. I think that having interesting, exciting, hands on
classes would definitely get students more involved and
interested school. Having a technology class like SFETT
would be so beneficial, but I don’t think it has to be that
big at all schools. Simply using technology in the
classroom can strike student’s interests and keep them
engaged in learning!

school succeed because this was another way
for them to express themselves,‖ - Marco

12. ―AHA!‖
The following are 3 of my ―AHA!‖ moments while
reading these articles:
1. Students that can express themselves as apart of the
learning process have shown to do work more efficiently!
2. Technology is not just for the students with disabilities,
but for all students!
3. Self expression can help students who usually don’t
succeed, to start succeeding!
