Celebrity Culture and Influence on Drug Use
Over time the transformation of celebrity culture and branding has become a way that society
interacts and identify with. As defined by the
OxfordDictionary.com, celebrity is a famous person and the state of being well known. Celebrities
and their lifestyle is a world that is constantly shown in magazines, television, and social media. The
state of being well known attracts endorsers that then brand celebrities with an image to sell a
certain along with their merchandise. For years, we have seen the constant up rise and downfall of
celebrities generally due to drug substance abuse. Through the exploration of celebrities' symbolic
power, symbolic capital, 4 levels of promotion, and real life examples I will demonstrate the impact
(if any) celebrities have had on themselves and young teens/adults drug use. Real life examples will
include late UK singer
Amy Winehouse, Argentinian hero Diego Maradona,. By doing this I will give an elaborate analysis
on the various ways celebrity culture and drug usage go hand and hand to promote casual drug use
as a normalized life style. Aside from doing so, I will also list negative and positive outcomes that
arise from celebrity drug usage, addiction, and sadly sometimes death.

A Textual Analysis Of Amy Winehouse
The award–winning documentary Amy was directed by Asif Kapadia and was made in 2015.
Kapadia "is known for his visually striking films exploring characters living in timeless, extreme
and unforgiving landscapes." ("Asif Kapadia" Biography. IMDb. February 26, 2016 .). In this film,
Kapadia depicts the life, fame, and the tragic death of Amy Winehouse. Winehouse was a British
singer who only creating two albums, became "one of the biggest music icons in British and jazz

Vaughan, Amy Winehouse was a pop star with soul; a once in two generational musical talent whose

Pathos refers to the emotional appeal of a text or film. In this documentary, I believe that the
director's use of pathos is a powerful aspect because he uses this device to appeal to the emotions of
he audience so that they have sympathy toward Amy. In the very beginning of the film, Kapadia
shows a home movie of Amy singing happy birthday to one of her close friends who was
interviewed later in the film. This scene is important in the symbol of music and the transition into
the story of Amy's rise to success because this scene sets the stage for Amy's career and start to
becoming a Grammy–winning jazz singer. I also found this scene to important because this scene
depicts the time in Amy's life when she found music to be happy and enjoyable before entering her
career. The rhetorical device of pathos as a mean to describe the symbol of music can be seen later
in the beginning of the documentary. The director shows scenes of Amy when she was first starting
out in the music industry. In one of these scenes, the director uses a voiceover of Amy when she
describes the moment in her life when her father left her mother. Amy states "when my dad left my
mom, I felt that I can get way with anything; I can do what I want, I can wear whatever I want, I can
swear, I can smoke, and I can skip school and be with my boyfriend in the house all day, my mother
would walk into the house and see me with my boyfriend and she would not care." Her friends and
family then told the audience that Amy was diagnosed with depression and was given
antidepressants. Amy then said that "I used music as an outlet– not many people who have
depression can say that they have an outlet but when I feel depressed, I can go to the studio, write a

1. Who is the family member and what is their health alteration? "Baby Mama" is a light–hearted
comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It is based upon a single middle–class professional
woman who wishes to have a child at this late stage of her maternal life. Tina Fey plays Kate
Holbrook (37yr old) who had failed at several attempts to have a child that include adoption and

The crisp air encompasses the paper I wrote last year for English– an essay on World War Z. A
photo of me and my mother from our vacation to Mexico floats by and then is lifted up, twirling
around the white marble on blue satin. Through all of this, soft, fluid music glides. I recognize the

When people talk about iCloud, this is what I picture my "cloud" looking like – all of my hard work,
my memories, good and bad, my favorite songs, that embarrassing video from last Christmas, all
hovering across clouds in the sky. What is this "cloud" everyone is talking about, though? Where is
it? Is it a legitimate place? Why is it that everyone uses it, yet no one seems to know what it is?

My orientation in the six areas may or may not compare with the expectations of our society. I am
time oriented. This is a very American way of thinking. American schools, businesses, and homes
often have a clock in every room, and nearly everyone wears a watch. Each day is organized into
time periods of specific length, and use of each period is fully planned. Anniversaries, dates, and
historical chronologies also have special importance.
I am a holistic thinker. This orientation tends to be present in Hebrew and other non–western
cultures while dichotomistic thinking lies primarily in the west. This tends to be because westerners
tend to use the left hemisphere of the brain which is analytical, logical, precise, and time sensitive,
while the non–western cultures use the right hemisphere which is holistic, emotional, pattern
recognition, and sensory. Although hemispheric dominance limits the creativity of individuals and
cultures, the general tendency is towards extremes. Western schooling and religious denominations
suppress the concrete, emotional, and synthetic thinkers, while non–western cultures suppress their
analytic and abstract thinkers.

Everyone knows that we live in a male dominated world. In the entertainment industry, as well as
every other profession in America, we see women struggling to be taken seriously. Fueled by the
media's obsession with appearances, women are under extreme pressure to look and act a certain
way to please the men around them. In the world of stand–up comedy, there is another layer to that
pressure. I'm talking about the pressure to be funny. A post circulating the internet displays a triangle
with the points labeled "intelligent", "good looking", and "emotionally stable". In the center are the
words "pick two". Replace "emotionally stable" with "funny" and you have the dilemma that female
comedians are faced with. In a male dominated industry, they are forced to decide whether they
want to reject today's idea of beauty and play up their wit and intelligence, or highlight their
appearance and play the "dumb blonde" for laughs. It is only recently that comediennes are refusing
to comprise their integrity to succeed.

This section of the book starts off with Jing–mei discussing the fact that since her mother passed
away she will now be taking over her seat in the joy luck club. After this information is shared, there
is background information for the club these women are a part of. Expositional elements are shared
in this section as well.
In order to keep her family safe, Suyuan moved her twin daughters and herself to Kweilin with other
refugees where she then created the joy luck club. She created this club in order to deal with the
stress of the war. After some time in Kweilin an army officer told Suyuan to take her children and
travel to Chungking to be with her husband. During her journey on foot she had to leave things
behind along the way and ended up with only three silk dresses and no children.
After Jing– mei finishes telling this story she goes into how she is nervous to take her mother's place
in the club. She also shares that while she was in the club meeting the other members received a
letter from her half–sisters because her mother was trying to locate them before she passed away.
The group gives Jing–mei money to travel to china and tell her sisters their mother's story.
The climax of this section would be after Jing–mei was told of the letter and decided to travel to
china and share the story of her mother. Being told she even had twin sisters would end up being the

I think this album is marvelous for a few reasons, one being her lyrics. The lyrics express struggles
within Amy's life that can be considered controversial. Amy would express and confront her troubles
in a fearless way within each song, which makes her music even more wonderful. In the

There are many causes of drug misuse and research has in fact shown that it is rarely the case that
only one factor indeed caused the individual to seek illicit drugs (Boys et al., 2000). Research from

Many times plot development is thought of as a key detail in keeping a story organized, while others
would say that plot structure tends to add too much order to a piece of work and hinder the reader
from exploring true creativity. A great example of these two contrasting ideas is illustrated in Amy
Tan's well–known novel "The Joy Luck Club". Although some could argue that there is no definite
plot structure portrayed at all within the book, this is not true. A slight plot lies within each
individual short story. While there might not be an overall rising and falling action connected
throughout the novel, an exposition, climax, and resolution are clearly illustrated in each story.
Typically, the exposition provides background information and introduces the reader to what the
story will be about. An example of this would be in the beginning of the story, "Two Kinds", when
Jing–Mei Woo says, "My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America...my

The story of Amy winehouse captures the pressure of life at where there is no curtain to hide behind
for closure. She was a local jazz singer who appreciate the art of music in its natural state. Being an
authentic artist she prefered the smaller performances so that she can have a dialogue with her
audience. She was a mastermind at her craft and new exactly how things needed to sound like and
what instruments she needed to obtain that substance. Growing up she always had freedom to do
what she wanted because she had emotional leverage over her mom, her mother allowed her to do as
she wanted because she did not attain the power to say no. Early in amy's childhood she was able to

Celebrity Culture And Influence On Drug Use Celebrity Culture and Influence on Drug Use Over time the transformation of celebrity culture and branding has become a way that society interacts and identify with. As defined by the OxfordDictionary.com, celebrity is a famous person and the state of being well known. Celebrities and their lifestyle is a world that is constantly shown in magazines, television, and social media. The state of being well known attracts endorsers that then brand celebrities with an image to sell a certain along with their merchandise. For years, we have seen the constant up rise and downfall of celebrities generally due to drug substance abuse. Through the exploration of celebrities' symbolic power, symbolic capital, 4 levels of promotion, and real life examples I will demonstrate the impact (if any) celebrities have had on themselves and young teens/adults drug use. Real life examples will include late UK singer Amy Winehouse, Argentinian hero Diego Maradona,.
