3. Decision: Front Cover Image ✔
As stated in my photo-shoot plan, I desired an image that combined colour in a black
and white photo using photo shop. As expressed previously, I wanted my magazine to
obtain two different genres including Pop and R&B. Not only will Vinyl Revival cover
current Pop and R&B music, but my magazine will also comprise previous Pop and
R&B music. On that account, I desired a black and white photo as it awards a vintage
feel to the magazine, while a notch of colour grants the magazine with a modern day
touch. I wanted both of my models to wear red lipstick as I thought this was the
perfect colour to reveal in my black and white image as it is bold and gives of the
impression that these stars are adventurous and fearless amongst the other stars
within the music industry. In addition to the above, the centre of the Vinyl Record is
coloured in red, which as a result generates a perfect house style for my front cover
(continuity of the colour red). As shown in the images on the previous slide, I
conducted my photo shoot plan since I depicted two models holding a Vinyl Record.
Both models were pictured looking directly at the camera, causing direct address.
After conducting my research, I came to the conclusion that a close up – shot at eye-
level was the most effective image for my front cover because it entices the readers
in, to buy the magazine. As a result of this, viewers can truly understand the artists’
emotions as the eye level camera angle allows viewers to view the person the way
we would expect to see them in real life. I took eight images in total (all with similar
characteristics), so that I had a variety of images to choose from when determining
what image I would use for my front cover. As exhibited on the previous slide, I
depicted two models using a medium close up shot so that their faces were seen
much more clearly for viewers, without getting uncomfortably close. Overall, I
decided to use the image on the left since it was taken with colour originally. On that
account, I could easily convert the image into black and white using photo shop and
then reveal the slight notch of colour. Each image taken was similar in the respect
that they all depicted two young girls staring directly at the camera, causing clear
direct address. However, the image on the left accomplished my needs more
appropriately, as I could later edit the image to unveil my genres effectively.

* Reasoning for not choosing images below *
As shown in the images on the right and below, each image
depicts both models staring directly at the camera, causing
direct address. On that account, the models/artists are clearly
connecting with the audience, enticing the readers to buy the
magazine even more so. However, as expressed previously I
desired a black and white photo that revealed some colour. For
that reason, the images on the right were not appropriate in
meeting my needs since these images were already taken in
black and white and so I would not be given the option of
editing them to reveal colour in a black and white photo.
Although the sepia images depicted below will allow me to meet
my needs on photo shop also, I decided that the gloomy facial
expressions present on both models will turn away future
consumers.
6. In my opinion, I believe the image pictured below depicts a natural express of
emotion from both of my models. Both models are laughing whilst looking directly at
the camera, causing direct address. As a result of this, the use of direct address
guarantees that my audience are able to engage with the artists immediately and
therefore effectively. This image will be displayed on my contents page, since it is the
first image that viewers will come into visual contact with when opening Vinyl
Revival. The natural convey of laughter gives of the impression that this magazine is

welcoming to all and is but a magazine that focuses
entirely on creating enjoyment to it’s readers, on a
monthly basis. On my contents page, I would like to
incorporate a variation of typical conventions,
including featured images (cover lines – features
that will be inside my magazine). On that account,
the image present on the left will not be the only
image in attendance, however it will be my main
feature image. I will also incorporate images such as
my double page spread image on the next slide, as
well as the image above. This image also uses direct
address, allowing viewers to once again connect
with the artist/model. Unfortunately, the image
depicted on the right, does not use direct address
and so I do not feel like this image entices
consumers/future consumers to read Vinyl Revival.

9. Decision: Double Page Spread
I desire a double page spread that covers one A3 page
landscape, so that it is clear that the two pages connect. For
that reason, I decided to use the image on the previous slide,
since it is a landscape image that will take up two A4 pages.
Whilst the majority of the background is black, the two subjects
present (Model and Harley Davidson) are seen in clear detail
due to the light placed upon them. In my opinion, I believe this
is the most mysterious image of all and so it is different from
every other image displayed in my music magazine so far. As
well as this, this is the only image out of my entire magazine
that is not using direct address. However, I believe direct
address would not have resulted in an image so mysterious as
the one depicted on the previous slide. The model’s
disconnection with the camera, gives off the impression that
her music has taken her out of this world. Over and above that,
it is evident that the image was taken outside and so it has a
clear relation to my target audience. Since teenagers are
constantly out, it makes sense to picture my teenage model
outside at night, as this is the time in which concerts/festivals
occur. Nevertheless, I have decided to incorporate the image
below onto my contents page also, as this image retains clear
direct address. I believe incorporating a variety of images that
carry out direct address on my contents page, results in
consumers willingness to continue reading the magazine.
