Evaluation question
1. In what ways does your media
production use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media production?
2. During my production I was inspired by ‘Elle’
fashion/glam magazine and the way Courtney Love is
presented as a empowering Rock goddess. Although,
my production is a Rock music magazine I have used
some of the conventions that were found in ‘Elle’ (life
style magazine) magazine such as dress codes, colours
use and body language this is because my Sweet
Emotion magazine is aimed at females and I wanted to
highlight this through the features that were found in a
globally well known fashion magazine for women to
make my magazine more appealing to specific
audience (in this case women). However, to represent
the genre of my music magazine I had used some Rock
iconography such as electric guitar, colour use of dress
codes and jewellery which stereotypically and through
time are associated with Rock music.
However, just because I was inspired by fashion
magazine that does not mean that my Rock music
magazine does not follow the conventions of Rock and
this is clearly presented to the readers through the title
which connotes violence and aggression.
3. Similarities and Differences
The body language of the models:
• the way that their legs are crossed could connote elegance.
• The hand gesture although its slightly different it still emphasizes on felinity strength and gives an
empowering image of the women which goes against stereotypical ideas of women being weak.
• Both of the models use the direct gaze to show that they are confident however, the way Courtney Love
head is slightly tilted up gives a more dominate atmosphere than the Sweet Emotion one
The dress code use :
• The use of black dress codes symbolises energy and power which is what Rock music is associated with.
• The rip tights connotes violence and aggression which gives a tension and adrenalin atmosphere.
• The colour black is used (as showed through my timeline research) to represent Rock music through time
• The colour black relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown
• “We all use black at various times to hide from the world around us in one way or another” this links with the
idea of escapism and how readers would buy my magazine as a need of something else
• In colour psychology, black means power and control which represents the genre of the magazine successfully
as Rock music itself is powerful
Similarities
Differences
Camera shot:
• Medium shot in the ‘Elle’ magazine, this is a typical shot used in magazines to show the target body
and the face
• I decided to use a long shot to highlight the genre conventions through the electric guitar and the
clothing. Also, due to the shot my model looks more empowering.

Props:
Background:
Font use and Celebrate endorsement use:
• I have decided to use electric guitar to illustrates to the target audience that it is a music magazine and
not a glamour's magazine that I was inspirit by
• The ‘Elle’ magazine uses the bracelets which makes the magazine more formal and elegant toward
women my model has a neckless named a “choker” which connotes the aggression and brutality at the
same time it addresses the young target audience which my magazine is aimed for after my questioner
research
• However… I have used similarly to ‘Elle’ magazine the black clothing (as spoken about before)
• I decided to similar colour background to ‘Elle’ magazine as the background connoted the metallic
atmosphere which emphasizes on the genre of the magazine
• However… My production also has a dark smoke in the background this is to make my magazine
more mysterious (which would create false needs to the audience) as well as to develop the violence
and energy that are shown through out the Rock music magazines (although the magazine is aimed at
women they still want to get the hardcoded atmosphere out of the magazine)
• I used a San Serif font to address my celebrate endorsement
• The use of listing should be more appealing and should make the readers to be more interested in
reading the article
5. In what ways does your media production challenge forms and
conventions of real media production?
My media production challenges in a way a stereotypical male
egocentrism and this is because my Rock magazine is aimed
at female. I decided to aim my magazine at women because I
belief that the Rock music magazines are mainly aimed at
males this can be inferred from the colour use which are
black, white, red and occasionally blue (blue stereotypically
connotes masculinity) however, you don’t get a Rock music
magazine that would have some pink (which stereotypically
addresses women). Also, the models of the Rock music
magazines are mainly men (you get rarely female artists on
the front cover of the magazine) which again suggest that the
Rock music magazine is aimed for male audience. From my
questioner research I found out that men equally to women are
interested in Rock music as well as the Rock magazines
therefore, as a student that believes in gender equality I
decided to highlight females in Rock music magazine by
aiming my production specifically at them. Although, my
magazine is aimed at women this does not mean that there
won’t be anything for men to look at.
6. In what ways does your media production challenge forms and
conventions of real media production?
Avril Lavigne is a example on a pop rock and alternative rock artist, although
her nature and identity is known for her wearing mainly dark colours as showed
on the example magazines both the heading and the headlines are in colour pink
which creates an effective contrast as well as highlight her femininity.
Arguably, my Rock music magazine follows the conventions of Rock magazine
as Avril Lavigne (globally well known artist) is associated with this colour. It
could be because Avril Lavigne is appealing to young audience however, I do
believe that 17 year old Rock fans can associate themselves with the colour too.
Pink is a delicate colour that means sweet, nice, playful, cute, romantic,
charming, feminine, and tenderness, is associated with flowers, babies, little
girls, and sweetness. The colour pink is the colour of universal love of oneself
and of others. Although, Rock fallows the colour scheme mainly of colours such
as: red, white and black personally I chose to colour to highlight the specific
target audience however, it is modern for young guys to associated and relate to
colour pink themselves therefore, my magazine can be appealing to both
genders. Moreover, pink colour has a effect on our emotional energies and can
relieve feelings of anger, aggression and neglect (proven in the study) therefore,
pink still gives out the atmosphere of Rock.
As seen in the previous slide the colour blue that symbolises masculinity was
used therefore, why can’t the colour pink be used in the Rock music magazine?
If the audience of the magazine are both females as well as males.
7. In what ways does your media production challenge forms and
conventions of real media production?
Here are some examples that target female
audience. The colour pink is a typical
colour to use as it highlights the femininity
and the sweetens which women like to
associate with. Therefore, the colour pink
in my Rock music magazine follows the
conventions of the magazines but at the
same time it breaks the typical conventions
Rock magazine.
The reason why I chosen the dark red is
because in my opinion is not as sweet as
innocent as bright pink. Overall, my
audience want to feel as dominant and
empowering as men.
8. In what ways does your media production challenge forms and
conventions of real media production?
I used a skull as the most common symbolic use of the
skull is as a representation of death and mortality. Rock
music is stereotypically connoted with brutality and
death. The skull represents the genre of my magazine but
it is also used as a magazine logo. Furthermore, this idea
links with typical Rock magazine and follows the
conventions of cruelness and uncomfortable imagery.
This is to emphasize that although the is a colour pink
use the magazine is just as powerful as the one targeting
specifically men.
