The Machine By Dandelion: An Analysis
An important lesson for Douglas and for the readers of Dandelion Wine prevails the idea that people and things are not dependable. As the events
of the summer of 1928 unfold in the little town, Doug and the reader notice that life and people are unpredictable. As Doug records on a tablet of
paper, "YOU CAN'T DEPEND ON THINGS BECAUSE... ... like machines, for instance, they fall apart... ... like tennis shoes, you can only sun so far,
so fast, and then the earth's got you again... ... like trolleys. Trolleys, big as they are, always come to the end of the line... YOU CAN'T DEPEND ON
PEOPLE BECAUSE... ... they go away. ... strangers die. ... people you know fairly well die. ... friends die. ... people murder people, like in books. ...
your own folks die" (Bradbury 186).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leo Auffmann, the inventor of the Machine, intended to create something with sounds, colors, and pictures of places that bring people
satisfaction; however, the characteristics manufactures false necessities, causes significant things to become meaningless, and remind people of
things and places they will never do or see. Lena expressed to her husband, "Leo, the mistake you made is you forgot some hour, some day, we all
got to climb out of that thing and go back... So two thing you did you should never have. You made quick things go slow and stay around. You
brought things far away to our back yard where they don't belong" (Bradbury 61). The Happiness Machine disappoints many of the people of Green
Town including Leo, his son and wife, Doug, and the other children. Furthermore, Doug's disappointment grows even more as Mr. Tridden informs
him that he and the trolley will be replaced by buses. Doug exclaims, "it's bad enough the Green Machine is gone, locked up in the garage, and no
arguments. And... my new tennis shoes are getting old and slowing down! How'll I get around?... no matter how you look at it, a bus ain;t a trolley"

Analysis Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a supernatural drama series lasting from March of 1997 to May of 2003 was a popular television show created by Joss
Whedon. The show is considered one of the top fifty shows of all times for many reasons including the fact that it is deeply rooted in the literary
tradition, the episodes always having deeper meanings and metaphors. The show was so successful despite being on a small network that it led to
hundred of tie–in products such as novels, comics, and video games according to Wikipedia. The show went as far as winning many awards and
achievements including a total of three Emmys including Outstanding Writing for the episode of "Hush". In the episode of "Hush" there are monsters
called the "gentlemen" who appear in the town and steal everyone's voice. Buffy and her friends, who already lacked communication had to defeat
those monsters using a source to interactive way in order to get it done. The episode "Hush" shows the significance and effectivity of having good
communication which is something that is taken for granted. Since the beginning of the episode it is evident that there is a lack of communication. As
Buffy and Riley walk with each other they never say anything longer than a sentence to each other, they were both holding back which leads to them
lying. This shows the struggle they both have to face to have a simple conversation with each other, neither of them say what they really wanted to say.

Creative Writing: Downtown
*To fully understand the story I'm trying to tell you, the story about me, I must start from the events of the past; things that happened long before you
and I were even born. Or not? It's hard to say. & short pause& I must warn you too. The things you hear might sound unbelievable, impossible even. I
can prove some of them. Some I can't. I need you to trust me.*
Darkness was falling over Zootopia; over curved sky–paths, venturous buildings and their sharp constructions, and heads of the mammals living there.
Or, that's how it looked in Downtown, after all. Other areas with their diverse flora didn't look as lively as the Downtown district in these late
afternoon hours. Nor did any district seem so uniform with such a variety of grey shades, dominant over all other colors. Animals prepared for the

Skeletons Alternate Ending
Once upon a time, on a beautiful Sunday morning. Paul decided to convince his friends to go camping. They all agreed and packed their bags thinking
it would be fun. They noticed that the nearest camp is 2 hours away from their hometown, but that didn't stop them. When they got to the entrance gate,
no one was there, so they just $1 in the cup and continued on their journey. Since it was October, they thought the skeletons were just decoration.
Although, they found it odd that not one soul was there, so they waited for someone to walk by, but nothing happened. Hiding his expression of
uneasiness, Aton suggested to set up the camp. Hesitantly, they agreed. After they spent an hour doing the last step of the tent, they finally got

Red Light Green Light And Wine Quotes And Analysis
"'Got my train ticket here in my pocket. Whoo–whoo, clang! Shush–shush–shush–shush. Whooooooooo...' His voice faded." (Dandelion Wine by Ray
Bradbury, Chapter 21) The moment when John Huff, a twelve years old, who's moving away from his friend, Douglas Splauding, tonight on the day
of their game "Red Light, Green Light and Statues" are the causes of their friendship that is now on the brink of destruction. "It was such a fine day
and then suddenly a cloud crossed the sky, covered the sun, and did not move again" seemed to foreshadow that on that day, Douglas and John's
friendship is about to undergo a huge change. As the two boys pondered along the railroad tracks and up through the hill, their beliefs toward each other

It's just the same as the usual basic level English that we speak, read, and write on a daily basis. Though the author's choice of words is vividly
imaginative, with each description comes with another imagery of what's going on in the story. Not only does the setting get the description, but the
characters, the creatures, and all the life form around the main protagonists are also creatively described. The first words that stand out to me were
"promise", "molten green–gold", "hate", and "tries". The reasons why these words relate toward each other and to the story is that each word holds a
very heavy meaning. "Promise" is an important word that every friendship relies on, along with the honesty and trust to keep the "promise". Based on
a quote, "The eyes are the windows of the soul" gives the word "molten green–gold" a much deeper meaning when reading it with the text it came
from. "And there were the eyes, not blind like statues' eyes, but filled with molten green–gold." (Dandelion Wine, Chapter 21) In this text, the two boys,
John and Douglas, are in the middle of playing "Red Light, Green Light and Statues". As mentioned, John's eyes seemed to be more focused
elsewhere instead of the game, most likely foreshadowing John leaving Douglas behind after he moved. "Hate" is a strong word, and when used
towards a friend, it's either interpreted as a friendly and jokingly manner or genuine

Summary Of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine
Everyone suffers loss at some point in their lives but, it affects people differently. Some are more vocal about their feelings than others. Nevertheless,
the pain of loss can push growth and maturity in everyone. The harsh sting of loss however will never be as strong as the love from friends and
family. In Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine, the citizens of Green Town, Illinois endure loss in its many forms. There is thedeath of a loved one,
extraction of an object no matter how insignificant, and the end of youth. These are portrayed during the events of the book as they happen to
twelve–year–old Douglas (Doug) Spaulding.
Throughout Dandelion Wine, Doug loses some important people in his life. Some are lost because of death and one is forced to leave. The first loss
of a person Doug suffers is Colonel Freeleigh. The Colonel, nicknamed the "Time machine", is an old man who has a very vivid and long–standing
memory. Doug and his friend love to visit him since he able to tell wonderful stories of his past. He dies of natural causes, but his death still comes
as a shock for Doug. Later, his great grandma dies of old age. She is ready to die and offers Doug some calming words about death. She tells him,
"Important thing is not the me that's lying here, but the me that's sitting on the edge of the bed looking back at me ... I am not really dying today. No
person ever died that had a family. I'll be around a long time" (Bradbury 183). These words are to tell Doug that she is not

The Use Of Symbolism In Dandelion Wine By Ray Bradbury
I am Doug Spaulding. Ray Bradbury may have chosen Doug to be the twelve–year–old protagonist in Dandelion Wine, but I am convinced that
Bradbury took a pencil and paper to my childhood. Part of the reason why Doug's character resonates with me so much stems from Bradbury's use of
symbolic language. Because symbolism leaves the audience to interpret the text's meaning, every reader draws a different interpretation of the text
based on his or her own personal experiences. By picturing the experience associated with Bradbury's imagery, the reader gains a deeper understanding
of the story. Bradbury effectively utilizes symbolism in Dandelion Wine to aid the audience in perceiving the text's significance and to impart the
messages that form the novel's overall theme. Bradbury reveals Doug's youthful nature in the form of animals, allowing the reader to visually
imagine Doug's mental and physical characteristics. After Doug becomes aware of his existence, Bradbury writes, "Douglas, eyes shut, saw spotted
leopards pad in the dark" (10). When Doug opens his eyes, Bradbury states, "The leopards trotted soundlessly off through darker lands where eyeballs
could not turn to follow" (10). From a twelve–year–old's perspective, leopards seem like the fastest and scariest animals in the world. The reader
envisions the leopards and gathers that Doug's realization of his existence struck him unexpectedly, leading him to be justifiably frightened. When
Doug opens his eyes, the leopards

couch and just as he settled in a position he liked, Spencer's body slumped into his arms. Daniel, clearly not minding it at all, wrapped his arm over
his chest and laid his head back. Dosing off, he could feel the rise and fall of Spencer's chest, so soothing and rythmic all in his hands.

Film Analysis: Something The Lord Made
Something the Lord Made is a coming of age film produced in the United States that premiered 30 May 2004 of a medical docudrama that depicts the
relationship between two heart surgery pioneers, Alfred Blalock, a noted surgeon and Vivien Thomas, a nineteen
–year–old carpenter's apprentice,
destined to become a laboratory technician. Produced and directed by Joseph Sargent, the film is based on the experiences which occurred during a
34–year partnership between Dr. Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas, (Mos Def) the assistant hired to perform janitorial work and clean the
dog kennels. During the evolution of their relationship, Blalock developed a great deal of respect for his assistant's work in the lab, while refusing to
acknowledge Thomas' contributions in the development of the new surgical procedures they created. Although he was not recognized by Dr. Blalock
or Johns Hopkins, Thomas continued his work with Blalock, exhibiting initially, his skills as a servant, and later, as a servant leader. In an example of
true altruism, Vivian Thomas, whose character I have chosen to critique, shows integrity, empathy, and forgiveness, character traits outlined by Dr.
John H. Horsman's in Servant –Leadership & Moral Intelligence, (0215, P. 11).

Violent Video Games
1.2 Billion, that's the number of people in the world who are involved in playing video games. Imagine this, the number is going to increase and
increase to a great deal in the future years. Nevertheless, the amount is not the problem, but what is the problem is that since teens are playing these
games, who knows what is to become of their future. More electronic games are being played and there are becoming more online games. With that
said, game companies are making more violent video games as well. More and more mass killings have occurred in the past where the culprit was a
gamer. What does this have to say about video games. Games with violence are awful for teens; because it can be distracting from what they really
should be doing, it is teaching bad values and core lessons, and is very costly to the average person. To start, role–playing games/video games are
distracting for teens and taking time out of their day. When students have free time they can either capitalize which means they can do something
helpful or valuable, or use it to do pointless things like playing these games. As students get into higher grade levels the workload dramatically
increases and that leads to more work and the game is diverting for kids from not doing their work. For example, in the article "High–Jinks:
Shoot–Out" written by Guy Martin he writes, "Three of the four seniors, armed with Walgreens issue water pistols, staked out Cohen's house in a blue
Toyota Minivan." As seniors or

Analysis of Bradbury's Dandelion Wine
Dandelion Wine After reading Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, I became more aware of the magic of summer and what it means to truly live.
The novel gave me a new perspective of thee idea that life is like summer where you're alive and feel free, but how it sadly doesn't last forever. The
novel opened me up to the idea of looking at person's mental age instead of their physical age. The novel follows the path of Douglas, a
twelve–year–old boy living in Green Town, Illinois. In the novel, Douglas strives to enjoy his summer and to live his life to its fullest. In his
adventuring, he becomes more aware of the nature of the world and tries to make sense of life and death. At the same time, Douglas sees people as

Douglas is crushed by John's news, and he deals with the loss of his friend by getting angry with John. Afterwards, Colonel Freeleigh dies, and
Douglas feels a great loss. He comes to realize that the colonel's legacy has died with him. As August starts, Douglas begins to lose his enthusiasm in
summer. However, his grandfather is able to raise his spirits with dandelion wine. The dandelion wine that he makes with his brother Tom and his
grandfather represents the spirit of summer that Douglas loves so much. Eventually the thought of death begins to haunt Douglas. He witnesses the
brief relationship between Bill Forrester and ninety–five–year–old Helen Loomis. Although their ages are far apart, they talk together every day for
weeks, as if seems that their minds are perfect for each other, although it ends when Miss Loomis dies. In the end, Douglas comes to terms with death
and that summer is coming to an end although he reflects on what he's observed throughout the summer and looks on never forgetting the magic of life
that summer brings through the power of dandelion wine. I found Ray Bradbury's novel really eye–opening. I thought the parallel of people with
machines along with the parallel of life and summer to be engaging. When I was first reading Dandelion Wine, I thought it was it was going to be
primarily about Douglas summer and his childish adventures. However, I was glad to find that the novel

The Oracle by Ray Bradbury
The Oracle: Ray Bradbury
Often heralded as the world's greatest nation, the United States is also considered home to the world's greatest authors. Reputable authors such as
Fitzgerald, Twain, and Steinbeck remain relevant even through the washing waves of time. One such timeless author, Ray Bradbury, ventured the
hazardous path of taboo to write of change. Through his novels of innocent youths evolving into children enlightened beyond their years, Bradbury
utilizes the motif of time, innocence, and the philosophical movements of existentialism, transcendentalism, and romanticism to describe catastrophic
events the American culture could face if existing destitute judgments continue to prevail. Ray Bradbury dared to reveal his voice.
Ray Bradbury was surrounded by a loving extended family during his early childhood and formative years in Waukegan. This period provided
foundations for both the author and his stories. In Bradbury's works of fiction, 1920s Waukegan becomes "Green Town," Illinois. In his stories,
Green Town is a symbol of safety and home, which is often juxtaposed as a contrasting backdrop to Bradbury as a senior in high school, of his tales
of fantasy or menace. It serves as the setting of his modern classics Dandelion Wine, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Farewell Summer. In
Green Town, Bradbury's favorite uncle sprouts wings, traveling carnivals concealing supernatural powers, and his grandparents provide room and board
to Charles Dickens. Perhaps the

Summary Of Dandelion Wine
An excerpt from the book, "Dandelion Wine", was written by Ray Bradbury and published in 1957. The story takes place in the small town of
Green Town where a serial killer, The Lonely One, remains at large. The main character, Lavinia Nebbs and her friends try to cope with the
discovery of Elizabeth Ramsell's body on their way to see a Charlie Chaplin film. Lavinia appears to be the only one not shaken up by the horrible
news, and after finding out that a conspicuous man is inquisitive about Lavinia, the ladies appear to be on edge. Lavinia struggles to control her fear at
the very end of the story when she suspects that she is being followed by a figure, and the story ends when she arrives home only to find that there is a
man in her house. In stressful situations, fear naturally changes the entire perspective of the situation, and is ultimately inevitable. "Dandelion Wine" is
best analyzed from the psychological approach because of how fear altered the character's perspective which enhanced the setting of the story.
The ravine that runs through Green Town is an important geographical factor of the story since it is the place where the Lonely One hid Elizabeth
Ramsell's body. Ray Bradbury also uses the ravine to echo Lavinia's perception of it before and after her fear of the Lonely One was revealed. On
page two is states, " Lavinia looked and the ravine was a dynamo that never stopped running, night or day; there was a great moving hum, a bumbling
and murmuring of

The Fundamental Principles Of Life In Ray Bradbury's...
Change: The Fundamental Principle of Life
Change is one of the fundamental principles of life. In life, it is recurring that mentalities and philosophies inadvertently change just as often as age and
maturity. As life goes on, change is what allows life to continue and progress. Change is eternal. The changes that we experience come because of
certain events that take place in life, or oftentimes just because of maturity. Whatever changes that transpire, it is important to embrace them, as life
goes on. Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine embodies these same aspects of change through its central characters, Doug and Tom Spaulding. The
way that they exemplify this idea of continual change is through their lives during the summer of 1928. During this period, Doug and Tom watch
change influence their lives as well as their community with the changes they see around them, the people, and the changes with themselves.
Doug and Tom experience change in their lives through the events that coincide around them. In retrospect, both boys recognize that just in the
summer, changes arise that they would admittedly never have foreseen. Beginning in chapter thirteen, the Happiness Machine reaches its end.
Although this creation had not been around for long, the boys were most certainly disappointed to see the Happiness Machine reach its end. In the
story, while Douglas is looking into the family rug, he cannot help notice that certain parts look like the Happiness Machine burning up. "'No

Comparison of my Mother's Leadership to Something the...
The movie, Something the Lord Made, sings a paean about two successful men: Vivien Thomas and Dr. Blalock. The movie shows how Vivien, the
doctor's assistant, and Dr. Blalock, the head doctor work together to solve a medical problem. On one hand, their relationship is so enviable that their
tacit cooperation is the key to their success in solving the "blue baby" puzzle that has gotten the best of other proficient doctors. On the other hand, Dr.
Blalock's stern, adventurous, authoritative, and indifferent mentoring styles are controversial. The same mentoring style has different effects on
different people, and different people would prefer different mentoring styles. Though my foremost mentor, my mom, was as stern as Dr. Blalock is,
she is far more prudent and considerate. Like Dr. Blalock, my mon was very stern, especially when it came to matters that dealt with my studies, but
she was doing it for my own good. Dr. Blalock undoubtedly is strict with Vivien Thomas. When Vivien made his first mistake during an experiment,

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analysis
The tenth episode of season four of the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer is known as one of the most interesting episodes of the show's entire
screening. Over many years of its showtime, Buffy has gained tremendous popularity. The show gained credibility throughout the years since the pilot
episode in 1997 and was even nominated for an Emmy. The episode "Hush" includes an occasional antagonist who are formerly known as "The
Gentlemen" who take the voices of Sunnydale. Although the entire show is known for its witty dialogue, this episode has very minimum lines of
actual speech. This choice of plot creates a clichГ© theme for the episode. The theme is "Actions speak louder than words." "Hush" however was
much different from the classic Buffy formula and took the fans of the show by surprise. In the episode "Hush," the theme is ironic because the
characters deal with their problems more efficiently through their actions than their words.
Buffy Summers and Riley Finn are one of many pairs of companions on the show. Buffy and Riley communicate more when they cannot speak than
when they have the ability to speak. Within their early lines of dialogue, tension builds between the two when neither could formally speak to one
another about their feelings. However, when they lose their voices during the rising conflict of the episode, they part with a silent kiss. Buffy and Riley
return to their awkward communication when they regain their ability to speak. The comparison between when

Essay On Choices In Tom Godwin's The Cold Equation
"It was the law, and there could be no appeal." The Cold Equation written by Tom Godwin illustrates the devastating outcome of following the law.
The main character Marilyn was just a regular girl, who wanted to see her brother Gerry. Marilyn makes a choice that affects everyone. Hard
choices have awful resolutions. Choices can affect people differently: they can change lives or the outcome of the choice can be unfair. Hard
choices can change life harshly and negatively. Considering this, the choice Marilyn made about getting on the ship ended in a negative way. This is
true, as Marilyn acknowledges, " when I hid on this ship, I got into something I didn't know anything about and now I have to pay for it" (18). To pay
for the choice she made, she had to perish. The one act had changed her life and her families. The decision Marilyn had made, had an awful resolution.

that life is unfair, it is life or death for her. The resolution of Marilyn being on the spaceship was awful and unbearable. In like manner, the
unfairness in this story isn't like a child saying it's not fair over a piece of candy; it is life or death. It is true, as Marilyn expresses, " I didn't do
anything to die for... I didn't do anything..." (27). Marilyn is stating that it wasn't fair she had to die for something she didn't do. She is so baffled to
why she has to leave her lovely life for something she didn't deserve to die for. All in all, hard choices can change a life dramatically and can result in

What Is Awful
What is awful? Awful is the Grand Canyon in the sunset of a summer night. Awful is the smell of a home cooked meal after being away at college for
many strenuous months. Awful is the sight of blue waves crashing onto the black sand beaches of Hawaii. On the contrary to what most of the
population believes, awful can be useful when portraying the positive or negative portions of the spectrum. Although older adults are portrayed as
wiser and more experienced, they may not know everything as many presume. In fact, their experience may be the cause to the misinterpretation of the
word "awful". When asked, most adults will define "awful" as a synonym to terrible or horrific. This mentality led today's society to the current,
negative interpretation

Figurative Language In Ray Bradbury's Excerpt From...
In Ray Bradbury's excerpt from Dandelion wine, he uses a variety of rhetorical devices to make us comprehend the atmosphere of the passage,
augmenting the boy's imagination. In the beginning of the passage, Bradbury uses a variety of figurative language to give a new perspective of the
town. As stated in lines 1 through 2the author describes the town "at ease in bed", which implies that the town is being personified to make it more
relatable and vivid, and show the town's insight of peace and tranquility. The author continues on by describing the boy as , "Like the goddess Siva in
the travel books , he saw his hand jump everywhere". This makes us allude all the many things the goddess Siva did, comparing on all the many
things the boy has planned to do in the summer, implying that the town is a place full pf activities and wonders.... Show more content on

Bradbury starts out by saying in line 35 through 39 "....dark spiral stairs..sorcerer's tower...thunders and visions. Ritual magic". Here the author uses
diction in the semantic field of mystery, in order to take a creepy turn of what looked to be a lovely place to something dark and unexpected. As the "
house lights winked.. and a sprinkle of windows came suddenly alight", the author personifies and compares to make the town more vivid and more
relatable again as it was when the story began, and bringing the town back to life

The Terrible Runaway : A Terrible Runaway
A terrible runaway
On October 30, 2011, two kids Jonah and Bailey made a decision that they were gonna run away together.
No, they weren't running away to a fancy hotel,or to California, they were running away to the Carnvoe woods. The Carnvoe woods isn't an area of
trees where nice animals live, it's an evil place, but Jonah and Bailey don't know that.
When they both finished packing they sneaked out of their houses and met at the woods.
They began their journey, but all of a sudden they heard a growl. " w–what was that?! " Bailey asked concerned. " don't worry probably just a dog "
Jonah said trying to cross a pile of rocks. Out of nowhere a pack of wolves popped up and both of them shrieked with fear. " what are yall doing out
here! Come in ! hurry up !" said an old man from a distance shooting some wolves so Jonah and Bailey could run to his cabin.
When they settled in the old man's cabin the old man quickly ran up some stairs leading somewhere. After about 5 minutes he came down.
" Thank you for saving our lives back there" Jonah said studying one of the old man's eye that looked so strange. " No problem, I'm Walton Hayes, y'all
can stay here as long as y'all want ... oh and make yall selves a home , I don't mind"
" I'm Jonah and this is Bailey, thanks for letting us stay with you Walton "
Hours passed, it was now 1am , and all of a sudden Bailey woke up needing to go to the restroom. She looked and looked but she never found it but she

How To Teach Children In Dandelion Wine
Dandelion Wine is a story about a group of friends that spend time together and have fun over summer vacation. There being, the majority of the
book tends to focus mainly on children, but there is a host of other older characters that make appearances throughout the story. They have their own
parts in the children's lives and from the perspective of a reader their main role is to teach the kids important life skills and information or ideas. The
older characters in the novel help teach the children life lessons and the way that the older people in the novel view the the world is different than the
way the kids do and they impact the main character through teaching him. Colonel Freeleigh was one of the grown ups in the novel that was able to...

he realized that the organization of the kitchen made Grandma no longer the best cook he realized that organization isn't for everyone. He thought
differently then Aunt Rose, he thought that the chaos was completely necessary in order for good food to be made. The Time Machine, Mrs.

Machine taught him that memories are there to teach others and remind you of the past. Mrs. Bentley taught him that you don't need actual objects
in order to remember the past and that you won't always be the person you are today and that one day you will be a grown up and there will be no

Analysis Of Ray Bradbury 's Dandelion Wine
As aging occurs within humans, not only do physical changes occur, but changes in the mind occur as well. Changes that change the way the brain
thinks and influences decision making, as well as reactions to certain situations that occur. These changes are apparent as the brain and body ages and
can clearly be seen when those of varying ages interact with each other. In Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, one of the main themes appears to be the
accustomed act of maturing, or growing up, specifically, how comprehension is different in people of different ages. Bradbury's novel includes
characters of various ages ranging from little kids to elders whose time has almost come to an end. These characters interact with one another

As the two brothers continue to go about their day throughout this section, their interactions reveal not only their personalities, but how they think
differently from each other due to their age differences. Tom, being the younger sibling, still has hope for things that Doug knows are scientifically not
going to happen, like snowflakes lasting until summer. Doug also seems to view things more cogently than Tom since he doesn 't find as much wonder
in a sandwichВґs taste being more flavorful when eaten outside. DougВґs disagreements with Tom show how his way of thinking leans more towards
realism when compared to Tom, although he still has a childlike fear of a ВЁThingВЁ, which he sees as this monster like being, coming after him.
Therefore, it can be concluded from the brothersВґ different views that even a small age difference can cause someoneВґs way of thinking to change.
Despite their contrasting views, Bradbury also reveals that Doug still falls into the common little kid belief in monsters to show that DougВґs thinking
still had some similarities with TomВґs thinking, but overall Doug had a more realistic view than his younger brother. The theme of humanВґs thinking
changing with age starts to emerge through interactions between just kids at first, but youthsВґ interactions with the elderly appear later on and show a
more drastic contrast between people of different agesВґ ways of comprehending. In the midst of

The Paradox Of Change In Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine
The Paradox of Change
Change is a force which is ever–present in the universe, and an individual is never free from its effects; change will continuously mold the individual
by challenging its perception of its surroundings and itself. In many ways, change causes development and maturity, yet it also causes decline and
decay. Change is constant. However, the paradox of change is often difficult to accept, and people will fight with its reality throughout their lifetimes:
friends will come and go, epiphanies and advances will arrive, and things will never quite be like they used to be. The struggle between change and
the individual is a recurring part of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. This relationship shows not only through the main character, Doug Spaulding, but
also through those around him. Doug and the rest of Green Town show how people contend with changes in that which they know, those whom they
know, and even themselves.
Many of Doug's favorite parts of Green Town become altered in some way during the summer of 1928. "'No more trolley. Bus starts to run tomorrow.
Going to retire me with a pension, they are"' (Bradbury 98). After Mr. Tridden tells them that the trolley is shutting down, Doug protests by pointing out
that a bus doesn't have the charm of the trolley. Later on, a woman thwarts an attempted murder by the town's serial killer, "The Lonely One". As Doug,
Tom, and Charlie reflect upon seeing the paramedics take Lonely One in on a stretcher, they lament the fact that there will be no more killings to create
excitement around town. Charlie rants to Tom, "'This town used to have some good stuff in it up until about twelve o'clock last night. From here on,
we're vanilla junket'" (Bradbury 178). They even try to convince themselves that the man on the stretcher wasn't the Lonely One. Regardless of how
unpleasant or cumbersome certain aspects of the town were, the kids still disliked their altercation, and they struggled with everything beginning and
ending around them.
The people of Green Town repeatedly grappled with very personal changes to those whom they were familiar with. This contention is very prevalent
within Doug when he hears that his friend, John Huff, is moving away. To delay the

Use The Rhetorical Devices In Ray Bradbury's Dandelions Wine
I'm Ray Bradbury's excerpt Dandelions Wine, he uses a variety of rhetorical devices to express Douglas's excitement for the returning of a "magical
summer." Bradbury begins this excerpt with personification that describes the town's atmosphere at the beginning of the day. In line 2, he starts off by
saying, "the town covered over with darkness and at ease in bed." He uses this rhetorical device to give the readers a feeling of how Douglas views his
neighborhood that morning. He then continues with metaphors to further describe that morning. In line 14, he explains how Douglas imagines, "when
the trees washed together" at night. Which is then followed by polysyndeton in lines 18–19 saying how Douglas saw, "swarming seas of elm and oak
and maple." This gives the reader a deeper understanding of the town's ambience. Bradbury finished off this first section with a simile that has a very
deep meaning. In line 23, Douglas compares himself to, "the goddess Siva." She is a powerful goddess that is known for having multiple arms. He
compares himself to her since he claims himself to be the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

phrase in order for the reader to visually see how the lights of the town started to turn on. Going back to lines 38–39, he describes how he begins to
"wake before the crystal jingle of milk bottles and perform his ritual magic." He uses sonic imagery to describe how Douglas would be awake even
before the milk man would arrive to their doorstep. He then uses olfactory imagery in lines 58–59 describing "the warm scent of fried batter" that rose
in the "drafty halls." Bradbury does this in order to truly activate the readers mental eye and have a well enough understanding to picture the scenario in

The Theme Of Happiness In Dandelion Wine By Ray Bradbury
Happiness is something that people all over the world strive for each day; it is even some's ultimate goal in life. There are many different
philosophies on how to achieve and maintain happiness, but no two people are precisely alike on their journey. Nonetheless, there is one reiterating
theme found, everybody has been given a chance at happiness. Life has never denied anyone of at least a glimpse of the feeling. Although there will
be darkness in life, happiness is perpetually found down the road. Ray Bradbury displays this idea in his novel Dandelion Wine. The main character,
Doug Spaulding, has many instances during his summer that supports this theme. Through the loss, change, and pain Doug both experiences and
views, he can always find happiness around him and in the life he lives.
Doug experiences many instances of loss during his summer. Between the moving of his best friend to the death of his great–grandmother, Doug's life
becomes very different than it was before the summer began. These events may cause one to believe that Doug is unhappy with his life, however
it is very much the opposite. By the end of summer, Doug is very optimistic about the next summer, saying "next year's going to be even bigger,
days will be brighter, nights longer and darker" (Bradbury 235). Though the very small world of his has been flipped upside down within a few
months, Doug is still happy and knows that things are only going to get better from here. One specific instance of Doug overcoming loss is when
his best friend, John Huff, moves away. After Doug sees John for the last time, Doug blows up in a fit of rage screaming "'You, John! John, you're
my enemy, you hear? You're no friend of mine!'" (Bradbury 111). This loss was very hard on Doug because he is very young, twelve years old, and
hasn't had to deal with anything like this. After calming down, Doug moves on and is able to find joy in life in things such as going to the local
ravine, writing revelations in his journal, and spending time with family. He becomes content with life once again.
Change is another prevalent item in Doug's summer that some might believe could hinder his happiness. Many parts of his life that have always been
there change over this

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode 410
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode 410 "Hush," a group of demon–like creatures known as The Gentlemen take over Sunnydale, stealing the voices of
everyone in the town and the hearts of seven random people. At this point in the series Buffy and Willow start college and Buffy meets a boy
named Riley, who is a teacher's aide in their class. During class Buffy has a dream of a little girl holding a wooden box who is singing a cryptic
rhyme about The Gentlemen that says things like "Can't even shout" and "Can't say a word." After class Riley tries to get Buffy to tell him about her
dream, but she tells him "I'm not saying a word." The episode then goes to Xander and his girlfriend Anya. Anya is upset with Xander for never asking
about how she feels, and tells him "we never talk." The scenes foreshadow all the characters taking their voices for granted, and becoming overwhelmed
when they are misinterpreted. When The Gentlemen steal their voices, it causes them to not be able to talk to each other, making them realize how
important communication really is. In "'Tough Enough': Female Friendship and Heroism," Sharon Ross focuses on the importance of a new vision of
heroism, by discussing epistemic negotiation. The chapter also discusses how important both female friendships, and group friendships, can be in
helping to fight crime. The main idea of epistemic negotiation is shown throughout the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayerbecause Buffy "almost always

  • 2. The Machine By Dandelion: An Analysis An important lesson for Douglas and for the readers of Dandelion Wine prevails the idea that people and things are not dependable. As the events of the summer of 1928 unfold in the little town, Doug and the reader notice that life and people are unpredictable. As Doug records on a tablet of paper, "YOU CAN'T DEPEND ON THINGS BECAUSE... ... like machines, for instance, they fall apart... ... like tennis shoes, you can only sun so far, so fast, and then the earth's got you again... ... like trolleys. Trolleys, big as they are, always come to the end of the line... YOU CAN'T DEPEND ON PEOPLE BECAUSE... ... they go away. ... strangers die. ... people you know fairly well die. ... friends die. ... people murder people, like in books. ... your own folks die" (Bradbury 186).... Leo Auffmann, the inventor of the Machine, intended to create something with sounds, colors, and pictures of places that bring people satisfaction; however, the characteristics manufactures false necessities, causes significant things to become meaningless, and remind people of things and places they will never do or see. Lena expressed to her husband, "Leo, the mistake you made is you forgot some hour, some day, we all got to climb out of that thing and go back... So two thing you did you should never have. You made quick things go slow and stay around. You brought things far away to our back yard where they don't belong" (Bradbury 61). The Happiness Machine disappoints many of the people of Green Town including Leo, his son and wife, Doug, and the other children. Furthermore, Doug's disappointment grows even more as Mr. Tridden informs him that he and the trolley will be replaced by buses. Doug exclaims, "it's bad enough the Green Machine is gone, locked up in the garage, and no arguments. And... my new tennis shoes are getting old and slowing down! How'll I get around?... no matter how you look at it, a bus ain;t a trolley" (Bradbury ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a supernatural drama series lasting from March of 1997 to May of 2003 was a popular television show created by Joss Whedon. The show is considered one of the top fifty shows of all times for many reasons including the fact that it is deeply rooted in the literary tradition, the episodes always having deeper meanings and metaphors. The show was so successful despite being on a small network that it led to hundred of tie–in products such as novels, comics, and video games according to Wikipedia. The show went as far as winning many awards and achievements including a total of three Emmys including Outstanding Writing for the episode of "Hush". In the episode of "Hush" there are monsters called the "gentlemen" who appear in the town and steal everyone's voice. Buffy and her friends, who already lacked communication had to defeat those monsters using a source to interactive way in order to get it done. The episode "Hush" shows the significance and effectivity of having good communication which is something that is taken for granted. Since the beginning of the episode it is evident that there is a lack of communication. As Buffy and Riley walk with each other they never say anything longer than a sentence to each other, they were both holding back which leads to them lying. This shows the struggle they both have to face to have a simple conversation with each other, neither of them say what they really wanted to say. Creative Writing: Downtown *To fully understand the story I'm trying to tell you, the story about me, I must start from the events of the past; things that happened long before you and I were even born. Or not? It's hard to say. & short pause& I must warn you too. The things you hear might sound unbelievable, impossible even. I can prove some of them. Some I can't. I need you to trust me.* Darkness was falling over Zootopia; over curved sky–paths, venturous buildings and their sharp constructions, and heads of the mammals living there. Or, that's how it looked in Downtown, after all. Other areas with their diverse flora didn't look as lively as the Downtown district in these late afternoon hours. Nor did any district seem so uniform with such a variety of grey shades, dominant over all other colors. Animals prepared for the nightlife, faired the best in all of the city.** ... • 5. Skeletons Alternate Ending Once upon a time, on a beautiful Sunday morning. Paul decided to convince his friends to go camping. They all agreed and packed their bags thinking it would be fun. They noticed that the nearest camp is 2 hours away from their hometown, but that didn't stop them. When they got to the entrance gate, no one was there, so they just $1 in the cup and continued on their journey. Since it was October, they thought the skeletons were just decoration. Although, they found it odd that not one soul was there, so they waited for someone to walk by, but nothing happened. Hiding his expression of uneasiness, Aton suggested to set up the camp. Hesitantly, they agreed. After they spent an hour doing the last step of the tent, they finally got everything set up. When the sun set, they decided to start a campfire. • 6. Red Light Green Light And Wine Quotes And Analysis "'Got my train ticket here in my pocket. Whoo–whoo, clang! Shush–shush–shush–shush. Whooooooooo...' His voice faded." (Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, Chapter 21) The moment when John Huff, a twelve years old, who's moving away from his friend, Douglas Splauding, tonight on the day of their game "Red Light, Green Light and Statues" are the causes of their friendship that is now on the brink of destruction. "It was such a fine day and then suddenly a cloud crossed the sky, covered the sun, and did not move again" seemed to foreshadow that on that day, Douglas and John's friendship is about to undergo a huge change. It's just the same as the usual basic level English that we speak, read, and write on a daily basis. Though the author's choice of words is vividly imaginative, with each description comes with another imagery of what's going on in the story. Not only does the setting get the description, but the characters, the creatures, and all the life form around the main protagonists are also creatively described. The first words that stand out to me were "promise", "molten green–gold", "hate", and "tries". The reasons why these words relate toward each other and to the story is that each word holds a very heavy meaning. "Promise" is an important word that every friendship relies on, along with the honesty and trust to keep the "promise". Based on a quote, "The eyes are the windows of the soul" gives the word "molten green–gold" a much deeper meaning when reading it with the text it came from. "And there were the eyes, not blind like statues' eyes, but filled with molten green–gold." (Dandelion Wine, Chapter 21) In this text, the two boys, John and Douglas, are in the middle of playing "Red Light, Green Light and Statues". As mentioned, John's eyes seemed to be more focused elsewhere instead of the game, most likely foreshadowing John leaving Douglas behind after he moved. "Hate" is a strong word, and when used towards a friend, it's either interpreted as a friendly and jokingly manner or genuine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Summary Of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine Everyone suffers loss at some point in their lives but, it affects people differently. Some are more vocal about their feelings than others. Nevertheless, the pain of loss can push growth and maturity in everyone. The harsh sting of loss however will never be as strong as the love from friends and family. In Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine, the citizens of Green Town, Illinois endure loss in its many forms. There is thedeath of a loved one, extraction of an object no matter how insignificant, and the end of youth. These are portrayed during the events of the book as they happen to twelve–year–old Douglas (Doug) Spaulding. Throughout Dandelion Wine, Doug loses some important people in his life. Some are lost because of death and one is forced to leave. The first loss of a person Doug suffers is Colonel Freeleigh. The Colonel, nicknamed the "Time machine", is an old man who has a very vivid and long–standing memory. Doug and his friend love to visit him since he able to tell wonderful stories of his past. He dies of natural causes, but his death still comes as a shock for Doug. Later, his great grandma dies of old age. She is ready to die and offers Doug some calming words about death. She tells him, "Important thing is not the me that's lying here, but the me that's sitting on the edge of the bed looking back at me ... I am not really dying today. No person ever died that had a family. I'll be around a long time" (Bradbury 183). These words are to tell Doug that she is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Use Of Symbolism In Dandelion Wine By Ray Bradbury I am Doug Spaulding. Ray Bradbury may have chosen Doug to be the twelve–year–old protagonist in Dandelion Wine, but I am convinced that Bradbury took a pencil and paper to my childhood. Part of the reason why Doug's character resonates with me so much stems from Bradbury's use of symbolic language. Because symbolism leaves the audience to interpret the text's meaning, every reader draws a different interpretation of the text based on his or her own personal experiences. By picturing the experience associated with Bradbury's imagery, the reader gains a deeper understanding of the story. Bradbury effectively utilizes symbolism in Dandelion Wine to aid the audience in perceiving the text's significance and to impart the messages that form the novel's overall theme. Bradbury reveals Doug's youthful nature in the form of animals, allowing the reader to visually imagine Doug's mental and physical characteristics. After Doug becomes aware of his existence, Bradbury writes, "Douglas, eyes shut, saw spotted leopards pad in the dark" (10). When Doug opens his eyes, Bradbury states, "The leopards trotted soundlessly off through darker lands where eyeballs could not turn to follow" (10). From a twelve–year–old's perspective, leopards seem like the fastest and scariest animals in the world. The reader envisions the leopards and gathers that Doug's realization of his existence struck him unexpectedly, leading him to be justifiably frightened. When Doug opens his eyes, the leopards ... Spencer was nearly passing out as he struggled to hold on to a drunken Daniel. "I think, you took a little too much this time, Spencie." Daniel slurred as they both collapse on his large couch. Spencer seemed to be limp as he mumbled a retort. Daniel just giggled. "Spencer?" Daniel took his face in his hands and lighty tapped his cheeck. No response, and Daniel laughed just a little harder. "Enjoy your nap, sexy..." Daniel slowly made himself comfortable on the couch and just as he settled in a position he liked, Spencer's body slumped into his arms. Film Analysis: Something The Lord Made Something the Lord Made is a coming of age film produced in the United States that premiered 30 May 2004 of a medical docudrama that depicts the relationship between two heart surgery pioneers, Alfred Blalock, a noted surgeon and Vivien Thomas, a nineteen –year–old carpenter's apprentice, destined to become a laboratory technician. Produced and directed by Joseph Sargent, the film is based on the experiences which occurred during a 34–year partnership between Dr. Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas, (Mos Def) the assistant hired to perform janitorial work and clean the dog kennels. During the evolution of their relationship, Blalock developed a great deal of respect for his assistant's work in the lab, while refusing to acknowledge Thomas' contributions in the development of the new surgical procedures they created. Although he was not recognized by Dr. Blalock or Johns Hopkins, Thomas continued his work with Blalock, exhibiting initially, his skills as a servant, and later, as a servant leader. In an example of true altruism, Vivian Thomas, whose character I have chosen to critique, shows integrity, empathy, and forgiveness, character traits outlined by Dr. John H. • 12. Violent Video Games 1.2 Billion, that's the number of people in the world who are involved in playing video games. Imagine this, the number is going to increase and increase to a great deal in the future years. Nevertheless, the amount is not the problem, but what is the problem is that since teens are playing these games, who knows what is to become of their future. More electronic games are being played and there are becoming more online games. With that said, game companies are making more violent video games as well. More and more mass killings have occurred in the past where the culprit was a gamer. What does this have to say about video games. Games with violence are awful for teens; because it can be distracting from what they really should be doing, it is teaching bad values and core lessons, and is very costly to the average person. To start, role–playing games/video games are distracting for teens and taking time out of their day. When students have free time they can either capitalize which means they can do something helpful or valuable, or use it to do pointless things like playing these games. As students get into higher grade levels the workload dramatically increases and that leads to more work and the game is diverting for kids from not doing their work. For example, in the article "High–Jinks: Shoot–Out" written by Guy Martin he writes, "Three of the four seniors, armed with Walgreens issue water pistols, staked out Cohen's house in a blue Toyota Minivan." • 13. Analysis of Bradbury's Dandelion Wine Dandelion Wine After reading Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, I became more aware of the magic of summer and what it means to truly live. The novel gave me a new perspective of thee idea that life is like summer where you're alive and feel free, but how it sadly doesn't last forever. The novel opened me up to the idea of looking at person's mental age instead of their physical age. The novel follows the path of Douglas, a twelve–year–old boy living in Green Town, Illinois. In the novel, Douglas strives to enjoy his summer and to live his life to its fullest. In his adventuring, he becomes more aware of the nature of the world and tries to make sense of life and death. At the same time, Douglas sees people as "machines" that serve a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, his grandfather is able to raise his spirits with dandelion wine. The dandelion wine that he makes with his brother Tom and his grandfather represents the spirit of summer that Douglas loves so much. Eventually the thought of death begins to haunt Douglas. He witnesses the brief relationship between Bill Forrester and ninety–five–year–old Helen Loomis. Although their ages are far apart, they talk together every day for weeks, as if seems that their minds are perfect for each other, although it ends when Miss Loomis dies. In the end, Douglas comes to terms with death and that summer is coming to an end although he reflects on what he's observed throughout the summer and looks on never forgetting the magic of life that summer brings through the power of dandelion wine. I found Ray Bradbury's novel really eye–opening. I thought the parallel of people with machines along with the parallel of life and summer to be engaging. When I was first reading Dandelion Wine, I thought it was it was going to be primarily about Douglas summer and his childish adventures. However, I was glad to find that the novel ... • 14. The Oracle by Ray Bradbury The Oracle: Ray Bradbury Often heralded as the world's greatest nation, the United States is also considered home to the world's greatest authors. Reputable authors such as Fitzgerald, Twain, and Steinbeck remain relevant even through the washing waves of time. One such timeless author, Ray Bradbury, ventured the hazardous path of taboo to write of change. Through his novels of innocent youths evolving into children enlightened beyond their years, Bradbury utilizes the motif of time, innocence, and the philosophical movements of existentialism, transcendentalism, and romanticism to describe catastrophic events the American culture could face if existing destitute judgments continue to prevail. Ray Bradbury dared to reveal his voice. Ray Bradbury was surrounded by a loving extended family during his early childhood and formative years in Waukegan. This period provided foundations for both the author and his stories. In Bradbury's works of fiction, 1920s Waukegan becomes "Green Town," Illinois. In his stories, Green Town is a symbol of safety and home, which is often juxtaposed as a contrasting backdrop to Bradbury as a senior in high school, of his tales of fantasy or menace. It serves as the setting of his modern classics Dandelion Wine, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Farewell Summer. In Green Town, Bradbury's favorite uncle sprouts wings, traveling carnivals concealing supernatural powers, and his grandparents provide room and board to Charles Dickens. Perhaps the ... • 15. Summary Of Dandelion Wine An excerpt from the book, "Dandelion Wine", was written by Ray Bradbury and published in 1957. The story takes place in the small town of Green Town where a serial killer, The Lonely One, remains at large. The main character, Lavinia Nebbs and her friends try to cope with the discovery of Elizabeth Ramsell's body on their way to see a Charlie Chaplin film. Lavinia appears to be the only one not shaken up by the horrible news, and after finding out that a conspicuous man is inquisitive about Lavinia, the ladies appear to be on edge. Lavinia struggles to control her fear at the very end of the story when she suspects that she is being followed by a figure, and the story ends when she arrives home only to find that there is a man in her house. In stressful situations, fear naturally changes the entire perspective of the situation, and is ultimately inevitable. "Dandelion Wine" is best analyzed from the psychological approach because of how fear altered the character's perspective which enhanced the setting of the story. The ravine that runs through Green Town is an important geographical factor of the story since it is the place where the Lonely One hid Elizabeth Ramsell's body. Ray Bradbury also uses the ravine to echo Lavinia's perception of it before and after her fear of the Lonely One was revealed. On page two is states, " Lavinia looked and the ravine was a dynamo that never stopped running, night or day; there was a great moving hum, a bumbling and murmuring of ... • 16. The Fundamental Principles Of Life In Ray Bradbury's... Change: The Fundamental Principle of Life Change is one of the fundamental principles of life. In life, it is recurring that mentalities and philosophies inadvertently change just as often as age and maturity. As life goes on, change is what allows life to continue and progress. Change is eternal. The changes that we experience come because of certain events that take place in life, or oftentimes just because of maturity. Whatever changes that transpire, it is important to embrace them, as life goes on. Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine embodies these same aspects of change through its central characters, Doug and Tom Spaulding. The way that they exemplify this idea of continual change is through their lives during the summer of 1928. During this period, Doug and Tom watch change influence their lives as well as their community with the changes they see around them, the people, and the changes with themselves. Doug and Tom experience change in their lives through the events that coincide around them. In retrospect, both boys recognize that just in the summer, changes arise that they would admittedly never have foreseen. Beginning in chapter thirteen, the Happiness Machine reaches its end. Although this creation had not been around for long, the boys were most certainly disappointed to see the Happiness Machine reach its end. In the story, while Douglas is looking into the family rug, he cannot help notice that certain parts look like the Happiness Machine burning up. "'No ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The movie shows how Vivien, the doctor's assistant, and Dr. Blalock, the head doctor work together to solve a medical problem. On one hand, their relationship is so enviable that their tacit cooperation is the key to their success in solving the "blue baby" puzzle that has gotten the best of other proficient doctors. On the other hand, Dr. Blalock's stern, adventurous, authoritative, and indifferent mentoring styles are controversial. The same mentoring style has different effects on different people, and different people would prefer different mentoring styles. Though my foremost mentor, my mom, was as stern as Dr. Blalock is, she is far more prudent and considerate. Like Dr. Blalock, my mon was very stern, especially when it came to matters that dealt with my studies, but she was doing it for my own good. Dr. Blalock undoubtedly is strict with Vivien Thomas. When Vivien made his first mistake during an experiment, Dr. Blalock bursts out and yells, "Do you have sawdust or just plain... for brains?" Although it later unexpectedly becomes the opening of the two starting to respect each other, it first hurts Vivien so bad that he wants to immediately quit the job his whole family relies on. Over many years of its showtime, Buffy has gained tremendous popularity. The show gained credibility throughout the years since the pilot episode in 1997 and was even nominated for an Emmy. The episode "Hush" includes an occasional antagonist who are formerly known as "The Gentlemen" who take the voices of Sunnydale. Although the entire show is known for its witty dialogue, this episode has very minimum lines of actual speech. This choice of plot creates a clichГ© theme for the episode. The theme is "Actions speak louder than words." "Hush" however was much different from the classic Buffy formula and took the fans of the show by surprise. In the episode "Hush," the theme is ironic because the characters deal with their problems more efficiently through their actions than their words. Buffy Summers and Riley Finn are one of many pairs of companions on the show. Buffy and Riley communicate more when they cannot speak than when they have the ability to speak. Within their early lines of dialogue, tension builds between the two when neither could formally speak to one another about their feelings. Marilyn makes a choice that affects everyone. Hard choices have awful resolutions. Choices can affect people differently: they can change lives or the outcome of the choice can be unfair. Hard choices can change life harshly and negatively. Considering this, the choice Marilyn made about getting on the ship ended in a negative way. This is true, as Marilyn acknowledges, " when I hid on this ship, I got into something I didn't know anything about and now I have to pay for it" (18). Warm and inviting during practice, and the hiss of the cold winds on night games has been forever implanted in my brain. In both instances, I could be found nestled under a blanket with my mother, reading. As early as two years old, reading was a part of my daily and nightly routine. With out even knowing it, my mom was embedding a love for literature deep in my soul. A desire to learn is not the output from going to school at an early age, but by influences from home life. Children pick up on even the subtlest, minute mannerisms the adults around them carry. I consider myself lucky knowing this fact, for I was a constant witness of my mom reading, writing in a journal, and motivating my brothers to do their schoolwork. Whether my mom was aware of the work she was doing or not, she certainly made a difference on how I approached school. For most, school is considered a job, an annoying everyday task. But the way she taught was graceful and fluid, leaving it pure nature to follow her words. Learning at home was not about being better than anyone else, except the you from yesterday. Simply put, her way of teaching could be mirrored by the famous Einstein quote, "Everybody is a genius. Doug also seems to view things more cogently than Tom since he doesn 't find as much wonder in a sandwichВґs taste being more flavorful when eaten outside. • 31. The Paradox Of Change In Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine The Paradox of Change Change is a force which is ever–present in the universe, and an individual is never free from its effects; change will continuously mold the individual by challenging its perception of its surroundings and itself. In many ways, change causes development and maturity, yet it also causes decline and decay. Change is constant. However, the paradox of change is often difficult to accept, and people will fight with its reality throughout their lifetimes: friends will come and go, epiphanies and advances will arrive, and things will never quite be like they used to be. The struggle between change and the individual is a recurring part of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. This relationship shows not only through the main character, Doug Spaulding, but also through those around him. Doug and the rest of Green Town show how people contend with changes in that which they know, those whom they know, and even themselves. Many of Doug's favorite parts of Green Town become altered in some way during the summer of 1928. "'No more trolley. Bus starts to run tomorrow. Going to retire me with a pension, they are"' (Bradbury 98). After Mr. Tridden tells them that the trolley is shutting down, Doug protests by pointing out that a bus doesn't have the charm of the trolley. Later on, a woman thwarts an attempted murder by the town's serial killer, "The Lonely One". As Doug, Tom, and Charlie reflect upon seeing the paramedics take Lonely One in on a stretcher, they lament the fact that there will be no more killings to create excitement around town. Charlie rants to Tom, "'This town used to have some good stuff in it up until about twelve o'clock last night. From here on, we're vanilla junket'" (Bradbury 178). They even try to convince themselves that the man on the stretcher wasn't the Lonely One. Regardless of how unpleasant or cumbersome certain aspects of the town were, the kids still disliked their altercation, and they struggled with everything beginning and ending around them. The people of Green Town repeatedly grappled with very personal changes to those whom they were familiar with. • 35. The Theme Of Happiness In Dandelion Wine By Ray Bradbury Happiness is something that people all over the world strive for each day; it is even some's ultimate goal in life. There are many different philosophies on how to achieve and maintain happiness, but no two people are precisely alike on their journey. Nonetheless, there is one reiterating theme found, everybody has been given a chance at happiness. Life has never denied anyone of at least a glimpse of the feeling. Although there will be darkness in life, happiness is perpetually found down the road. Ray Bradbury displays this idea in his novel Dandelion Wine. The main character, Doug Spaulding, has many instances during his summer that supports this theme. Through the loss, change, and pain Doug both experiences and views, he can always find happiness around him and in the life he lives. Doug experiences many instances of loss during his summer. Between the moving of his best friend to the death of his great–grandmother, Doug's life becomes very different than it was before the summer began. These events may cause one to believe that Doug is unhappy with his life, however it is very much the opposite. By the end of summer, Doug is very optimistic about the next summer, saying "next year's going to be even bigger, days will be brighter, nights longer and darker" (Bradbury 235). Though the very small world of his has been flipped upside down within a few months, Doug is still happy and knows that things are only going to get better from here. One specific instance of Doug overcoming loss is when his best friend, John Huff, moves away. After Doug sees John for the last time, Doug blows up in a fit of rage screaming "'You, John! John, you're my enemy, you hear? You're no friend of mine!'" (Bradbury 111). This loss was very hard on Doug because he is very young, twelve years old, and hasn't had to deal with anything like this. After calming down, Doug moves on and is able to find joy in life in things such as going to the local ravine, writing revelations in his journal, and spending time with family. He becomes content with life once again. Change is another prevalent item in Doug's summer that some might believe could hinder his happiness. Many parts of his life that have always been there change over this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although each character has had differentiation and similarities with others, Mr. Van Daan and Mr. Dussel have discernible character traits throughout the play. Whereas their fears and judgements akin, the two men have unalike responsibilities, especially with Mr. Van Daan needing to be a father. Propitiously, their true characters are shown as a result of their actions, To begin with, Mr. Van Daan and Mr. Dussel surprisingly have more similarities than differences. Particularly, their perspective of Anne's behaviors are fairly similar. They both believe that she is immature and childish, whereas she is trying to mature as a woman. • 37. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode 410 In Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode 410 "Hush," a group of demon–like creatures known as The Gentlemen take over Sunnydale, stealing the voices of everyone in the town and the hearts of seven random people. At this point in the series Buffy and Willow start college and Buffy meets a boy named Riley, who is a teacher's aide in their class. During class Buffy has a dream of a little girl holding a wooden box who is singing a cryptic rhyme about The Gentlemen that says things like "Can't even shout" and "Can't say a word." After class Riley tries to get Buffy to tell him about her dream, but she tells him "I'm not saying a word." The episode then goes to Xander and his girlfriend Anya. Anya is upset with Xander for never asking about how she feels, and tells him "we never talk." The scenes foreshadow all the characters taking their voices for granted, and becoming overwhelmed when they are misinterpreted. When The Gentlemen steal their voices, it causes them to not be able to talk to each other, making them realize how important communication really is. In "'Tough Enough': Female Friendship and Heroism," Sharon Ross focuses on the importance of a new vision of heroism, by discussing epistemic negotiation. The chapter also discusses how important both female friendships, and group friendships, can be in helping to fight crime. The main idea of epistemic negotiation is shown throughout the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayerbecause Buffy "almost always consults with her friends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. My First Outlook Provided For My Life A million memories flash through my mind as I ponder upon my first outlook provided for reading. Warm and inviting during practice, and the hiss of the cold winds on night games, I could be found nestled under a blanket with my mother, reading. The cool and crisp air of fall baseball season holds these precious reminisces. As early as two years old, reading was a part of my daily and nightly routine. Without even knowing it, my mom was embedding a love for literature deep in my soul. Learning at home was not about being better than anyone else, except the Danielle from yesterday. Knowledge should never be seen as an advantage over someone else, but a means by which to share in an evolution. Simply put, her way of teaching could be mirrored by the famous Einstein quote, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
