Conventions Of Newspapers
There are many important conventions in a
newspaper article to consider when the editors
write an article. Newspaper articles are all set out
in the same layout, which makes it easier for the
readers to read, For example articles are written
out in columns.
All information is then added and
placed in the article which is then
laid out in order of importance. E.G.
the beginning of the article will
display all important information
which then will be sent to the
readers, but towards the end of the
article will include less important
details, which readers tend to
mostly leave out, this is why editors
put vital information at the top.
Features Of Newspapers
Headline- A headline is the title of an article, which is usually set
at the top of the article. The headline will mostly be short but
simple, and straight to the point, so the readers get an idea of the
articles stories. It will also have to be eye-catching, also will have
to engage the audiences attention, in order for the readers to
read the article. However, the font will be large and bold so that
audience are alert that it’s a headline.
By-line: A by-line is usually placed at the bottom of the article,
which is the reporter/author who wrote the article.
Lead Paragraph: A lead paragraph usually occurs together
with the headline or title. It follows the main body of the article,
and it gives the reader the main idea of the story.
Main Body: The main body is where the main features of the story are
included for the audience to read. This would mainly be set out into
short paragraphs to keep the audience alert. The vital information will
be towards the top of the article, as many readers do not read the
entire article.
Masthead: This is a the front cover of the newspaper which is usually
short which makes it easy to remember. Therefore the audience will
be able to identify the newspaper. The masthead is normally a the
top or the front cover of the page.
Slogan: A slogan is a ‘slogan’ for a newspaper, which is something
that can be easily indentifyed with a newspaper.
Photographs: on the front of the newspaper , there will always be
pictures taken from main updated stories to give the audience an
insight of what they will be expecting in the article. These pictures will
also include a caption .
Institution: Owned by
newsquest are owned
by the Garnett media
group. the paper
would be derlivered to
house to those who
want it, or could be
bought from the local
shop/newsagents.
unlike the metro as the
news shopper is aimed
more to give news to
the residents of the
area, the articles arent
so basic to read, its
more formal.
Representation: the news
shopper is the local paper
of the area, the main
audience would obviously
be residents of the area
(bromley). Although run
locally the newspaper itself
is owned by newsquest, a
compant that run most of
the regional newspaper all
over the UK. This front page
affects the whole target
audience, similar to the
metro, regardless of the
race, gender , age or
social class. All newspapers
try to make thier headline
affect as manty of the
target audience as
possible , as it is the main
feature the audience look
at when they pick up the
paper.
