2. Lyrics
‘I heard you got a new girlfriend and it's hurtin' me’
This show us that the character who Stefflon Don is playing has just found out her Ex-
boyfriend who she still cares about has got a new girlfriend.
‘Breakfast in bed darling’
This shows us that the female character would still be willing to do things for him if they
were still together e.g. make him breakfast. This shows us that the relationship looked
male dominant as this implies that the female was doing all of the jobs. This can related
back to a stereotype of a female is being a ‘housewife’. With this like Stefflon’s character
is making this sound true as she would get up and cook for her boyfriend while he’s still
in bed.
‘I made mistakes, you done me wrong’
This line implies that the male in the relationship may of cheated on the woman but, she
still cares and has feeling for the man but he has moved on from the split in the
relationship. This is backed by another line that shows that the woman is upset that the
relationship has ended. (‘Tears down my face fallin‘ ) This is further showing that
Stefflon’s character is being portrayed as weak and emotional.
3. Music
Hurtin me is an example of a Hip hop and Rap track that French
Montana and Stefflon Don normally produce.
4. Mise en Scene
In the video at one point Stefflon is looking at pictures that represent the
past. As a viewer this shows that she does not want to give up her feelings
for the man. Then in a shot later you can see the camera and photos on a
table on their own , this could mean the character is trying to move on by
leaving the past in the past. In the next scene being shot through that
same camera, this could mean that then next part of her life (future) will
just be herself.
The outfit choices that Stefflon wears are very revealing of her breasts and
her bum. These outfit choices can make her character look like a sexual
object and an item. An example is in a dance routine she is wearing fishnet
tights and what looks like a body suit that goes into a thong. The makeup
worn by Stefflon is very simplistic, she has some false eyelashes on to
extenuate her eyes and to make them look larger and flirty. However, her
lip gloss is the first thing you see when you look at her, the gloss can
sexualise her to make her look more desirable.
5. Continues Mise en Scene
The location in the music video look like a luxury apartment or house,
you can see that it may be expensive as there are shots of a swimming
pool in the ‘garden’ type area. Also, there are several wide shots and
you can see a lot of furniture and tvs. The times when Stefflon is
dancing you can see a view of hills which fit in with the expensive
design of the apartment very well.
6. Camerawork
In the video when Stefflon Don is singing she is the main focus of the
video, this is the same when French Montana is singing. A wide shot is
used mostly throughout the video as a view of the hills are in the
background. When the camera is just on Stefflon they are a mix of
medium close up shots and close up shots, this can show her dominant
features such as her lips which then are sexualised. Also, the longer
shots are used to show her performing and dancing.
7. Editing
The editing is fast cut which is in sync with the beat of the music. When
the lyrics change tone e.g. when a sad lyric is used the editing is
cleverly used to show how the emotions change on particularly on
Stefflon's face. The same for a happier tone in the music video, as the
beat quickens the music video mirrors that tone e.g. Stefflon would
start dancing or smile in the music video.
8. Intertextuality
In the music video Stefflon Don wears revealing clothes that show off her
breasts and bum, this tells us that she is probably seen as something to
have like a trophy. This video shows us that men are seen as more
dominated in heterosexual relationships than women as you also see
Stefflon Don looking at pictures of the ex-boyfriend and looking upset.
Even though the lyrics have implied that the man was the person who
done wrong in this relationship between Stefflon and the man who was
her boyfriend.
9. Narrative/ Performance
This video structure is a mixture of performance and narrative. The
performance part of the music video shows off Stefflon dancing which
is normal for a hip hop track. Then the narrative parts of the music
video show the present time and past. The past is shown in small
snippets of flashbacks to the time when she was with her boyfriend,
these moments are mainly shown when Stefflon is looking through
some old photos of them both. The present shows her on her own
implying that they broke up (this is also implied in the lyrics) and so the
shots are of Stefflon on her own or with dancers of friends. In these
scenes of the music video Stefflon looks happy and when she is looking
at the pictures she looks upset. This could also mean that the future s
going to be much happier for the persona.
10. Star Image/The Brand
The persona that Stefflon Don is playing is seen as weaker in a
heterosexual relationship as she is seen to be the upset person out of
the two after the relationship has ended. This music video can further
show that as Stefflon's character is upset showing a stereotype of
women as being emotional. Also, her body and the clothes she wears
can show an example of women who are in relationships and are seen
as an object and just there to be looked at. You can tell this because
she is wearing outfits that are very revealing; this is a usual dress code
for the music videos Stefflon Don is in and hip hop music videos in
general.
11. Voyeurism
Stefflon Don is presented sexually in the music video due to her outfit
choices. These outfits consist of very revealing tops this could be to do with
the fact that the producer is a male or could just be the fact that she just
chose the outfit (these types of outfits are a regular occurrence throughout
most of Stefflon Dons music videos). Either way the outfit that Stefflon is
wearing will attract attention.
12. Context
In the music video Stefflon Don wears revealing clothes that show off
her breasts and bum, this tells us that she is probably seen as
something to have like a trophy. This video shows us that men are seen
as more dominated in heterosexual relationships than women as you
also see Stefflon Don looking at pictures of the ex-boyfriend and
looking upset. This again meets with the stereotype of women being
emotional. Even though the song implies that it was the man that hurt
Stefflon’s characters feelings, this shows that her character is still in
love with the man that hurt her.
