This document analyzes screenshots from the music video "Time" by Chase and Status that depict domestic abuse. It discusses various shots that show the difference between the couple's happy home life and when abuse occurs, including a wide shot of their nice family home. It also analyzes close-up shots of the singer that show her emotions as upset, confused and worried. Shots from a lower angle make the man look more dominant and the woman look more innocent and helpless. Flashing between happy and sad scenes of the couple shows a realistic depiction of an abusive relationship. The document recommends replicating certain shots in another music video to portray domestic abuse, such as an over the shoulder shot of a woman covering a bruise.
1. Chase and Status-Time
Music video analysis
I'm going to print screen and analyze the screen shots. They will
include various angles and what influence they give to our group.
2. We have this actual scene in our music video. It’s to show the
difference between their happy home life and when she is being
domestically abused. It’s a wide shot, and the audience can
establish that they are at nice family home.
3. This video is different from others as it shows
domestic abuse from various different people’s
view all in 3 minutes. This is the women who is
being abused daughter. From the video it looks as
if she is more left out then other family members.
There are various shots that are close-ups of the
artist singing. The close-ups portray her emotion
as upset, confused and worried. However she is
also in shots that are narrative to emphasise this
as well as preformative (singing). In the bottom
photo it’s her putting headphones in which
suggests she doesn’t want to hear what’s going
on. There are tears on her face which might mean
she isn’t sure what to do.
4. A lot of the shots are over the
shoulder or from a lower angle
so that the man looks more
dominant. This means that the
lady who is being abused looks
more innocent and helpless.
The staircase is purposely open
so that she can fall down
it, however in our houses, stairs
aren’t like this. If we were to
duplicate this, the lighting
wouldn’t be as good. However
to have a bigger percentage of
the man looking more powerful
is a good idea.
5. In this part of the video the
camera flashes back from two
different scenes frequently
and all within a short amount
of time. This looks good
because it shows a realistic
example of a domestic abuse
relationship. We want to have
a similar theme in our video.
Where it shows the couple
happy and sad at other times.
Again the man seems more
dominant even when they are
happy.
6. We want this exact shot in our music
video. A over the shoulder shot of the
girl covering up a bruise. As it is a close-
up you can see from the emotions on
her face that she is upset and unhappy.
This a over the shoulder shot of him
kissing her back. On her back she has
a bruise. This shot makes it look as if
he feels remorseful. On our video we
wanted to show a screen shot
however this is also a good idea to
show that he knows he’s violent
towards her and can’t help her.
