CAMERA SHOTS ANALYSIS
BY ELEANOR WEST
One of the first shots we see when the song starts playing
in this music video is of this young boy looking out of the
window. Instantly it is clear to the audience that this music
video is set in a third world country considering the poor
conditions that these people are living in. To add to that
this close up shot shows blood on the boys face
emphasizing on the struggles in his life the home
conditions and people he is living with.
The music then zooms out to create an
establishing shot. This creates empathy
toward the characters of this music video
as the audience quickly get to see the
horrific conditions of not only the
household but the whole community and
how this could vastly impact them.
This mid shot is to quickly
follow on from the last two to
show how you have to create
a scenes of unity to get
through the problems in this
society. To add to that this also
shows the brotherly bond
between the two characters.
Finally, one of the last scenes in this music videos is
the two boys lying down on the floor simultaneously
to each other, in different scenarios. This mid- close
up and long shot of the two characters highlights the
problems in this type of society: the gang culture in
third world countries. This type of scene also
highlights that people so close can have such
different out comes all depending on what life
decisions they choose to make.

At the start of the song one of the first shots is this mid shot.
This enables the audience to gather an understanding of what
the song is about. This is due to the fact that the mid- shot
shows the audience the music video is set in a bed room or
hotel room etc. I also shows a main character and four other
female characters; this implies that this song is about working
together and is a very girl orientated song and music video.
This is another mid- shot which has been
used in the music video to emphasize on
the unity between the girls in the scene.
This implies this song is about women
looking out for each other. Also the
colour scheme of this music video is very
pastel based giving the video a ‘retro’
vibe.
This establishing shot is
incorporating flamingos de
to the fact that flamingos
travel in flocks and always
stay together. They are
constantly looking out for
each other , therefore have
been used as a metaphor
for the women in this video.
Finally this long shot towards
the end of the music video is
of a girl walking on water.
This is suggests that with this
amount of power and unity
that the video has portrayes
people can do anything, even
the impossible like walking
on water.
Dua Lipa - New
Rules
This mid- shot zoom in is the first thing that the
audience watching this video is going to see.
This automatically lets them know that this
music video is set in a school or about people
who go to high school. This implies that this
music video and song is aimed towards
teenagers or youth.
The establishing shot that follows of from one
of the first shouts is of a girl standing on the top
of a school bus. This suggests that this song is
about rebellion and fighting against rules. This
is also a very cliché move in a music video
especially ones related around school. This
could indicate she is/was a new artist and
wanted to make a video that she new was
going to be successful
This music video has got a very chic
flick film story line to it (wild child). The
multiple mid- shots throughout the
music video enable the audience to
see what is going on in the scene. For
example, in this scene the group of
girls are in a ‘trashy linger’ shop trying
on a load of clothes. This shot shows
the audience that these girls are being
very stereotypical teenagers.
Charli XCX -
Break The Rules
One of the final scenes is also a mid-
shot. This mid shot is of the group of
girls going to their prom. This is also
a very high school orientated activity
which most teenagers look forward
to. This shot suggests to the
audience that these kids only want to
have fun, which relates back to te
song.
