The And Its Effect On Society
Throughout the ages, the centuries that have passed, there have always been those that have suffered
in silence or amidst the pity of others, and there has always been the question of whether the
suffering makes us stronger as a person and leads to success, or damages us and we never truly
recover. It is true, we are all different, stigmas affect us in various ways and can either aid us or
hinder us; however, one thing that unites us is our courage, our belief, and our will, the will that will
either make us or break us. Strength, it can be more than brute force, it is more than brute force, it is
also courage and determination; when those are extinguished, I fear strength has died and in its
place is spawned a type of pestilence, a strength known as pessimistic strength, a cavern in which all
of the defeated gather and dwell on their failures. Being pessimistic is the effortless way out, it is the
path that is lined without light and without success; being optimistic is the stronger way out, it is the
path that is lined without darkness and without fear of failing; optimism often times brings with it
failure, but those who are strong know that failure is a necessary part of success, those who are
strong know that success requires never giving in to pessimism, and they know, above all, that
success comes because failure has first graced them and they never gave up, no matter what the
circumstance.
There have been many who have suffered and found success, one such example is

Summary Of Srinivasha RamaanujanBy John Keats
collaborated on several ground breaking papers. But in 1917, as a result of the climate and a poor
diet, Ramanujan contracted tuberculosis. A well known story tells Hardy visiting him in hospital;
unable to think what to say.
Placing Ramanujan along side John Keats may seem a bit paradoxical as he former belonging to
Mahemtics the latter to English Literature. Moreover, Ramanujan has never been marked having an
interest in English language nor in literature. But the juxtaposition is apt and appropriate in the sense
that both the heroes of respective faculties are te best examples of the proverb, "Men live in deeds
not in years". John Keats lived for only twenty–sic years. In his short span of life granted to him, he
dived deep into the ocean of literature and gave many precious verses that are peculiar and unique.
He left an everlasting imprint on the body of English literature by devoting his life to the service of
English Literarure. He lived through many odds in life. Miseries dominated in his life. He died of
tuberculosis. He stands no way less than the other poets, some were fortunate even to spend enough
to a century.
Likewise, Srinivasha Ramanujan lived only thirty– three years. For him also, life was not a bed of
roses– trails and distributions became part and parcel of his life. But he remained engrossed in his
mathematical passion notching up several milestones in his short life span. Even though he had lived
for only thirty–three years, he has contributed a lot

The Paradox Of Success Research Paper
Another discipline that widely displays the paradox of finding success through failure is science. In
science there have been many great success stories, where scientists have achieved their success
through failure. An example of this is Thomas Edison, who experienced many setbacks in life but
did not let that stop him from reaching his goals. "Thomas Edison was one of the most productive
inventors in American history. With 1,093 U.S. patents and more in the United Kingdom, France,
and Germany, no other inventor has come close to Edison's output" (Edison, 2007). His resiliency is
what led to him finally getting it right. On his failed attempts, Edison said,
I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving ... Show more

Interestingly enough, Thomas Edison who also struggled with setbacks, was a close friend of Henry
Ford and urged him to pursue his dreams of manufacturing cars. Edison's past experience allowed
him to be able to give him this sound advice. It wasn't always easy for Ford, who grew up knowing
"that an individual could get ahead in the world by working hard. But social or economic conditions
were not an excuse," (Ford, 2003). He worked very hard, despite his economic status to become the
success that he was and still is today. His work ethic and mindset are what pushed him to keep
going, even when things were not going his way. He stated, "You can do anything if you have
enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars," (Ford, 2003). I really
like this metaphor of success, because it is completely true. If we are able to have enthusiasm
towards what we are trying to accomplish, we will be more likely to reach it. This is similar to what
a wise professor of mine says, " If your not having fun, you're not learning." Which goes hand in
hand with success as well, because if you are not enjoying what you are doing than you will not
have any motivation to

Elizabeth Gilbert's TED Talk: Grit, Passion Or Failure?
Success, in the words of the Merriam–Webster's dictionary is: The correct or desired result of an
attempt. Granted, there is a vast collection of definitions for the word success. You would think that
Merriam–Webster would know the true definition of success, but what exactly defines true success?
In fact, how does one embody success? Using examples from TED talks, a true definition of what
the characteristics of a successful person are will be revealed. I believe a successful person
demonstrates the qualities of grit, passion and failure. In the TED talk of Angela Lee Duckworth–
"The key to success? Grit." she talks about her 7th grade math students. When grading papers she
discovered a staggering difference between her best and worst students. She noticed her stronger

It's what makes us that way. There is no way to avoid it so, what happens during a time of failure?
Elizabeth Gilbert's TED talk– "Success, failure and the drive to keep creating." creates a well
brought statement on the term "failure". Many people would consider failure as bad, that it ruins us
both mentally and physically. However, these statements are baseless. Gilbert begins by expressing
her feelings on being known as the girl who wrote Eat, Pray, Love. She says that the fans who loved
her book would be disappointed because her next book would not be Eat, Pray, Love and her haters
would be disappointed as well. She had no way out, she was trapped in a whirlwind of failure.
Regardless, she used grit and reminded herself of her passion and continued on. She states, "I had to
find a way to make sure that my creativity survived its own success. And I did, in the end, find that
inspiration, but I found it in the most unlikely and unexpected place. I found it in lessons that I had
learned earlier in life about how creativity can survive its own

Uplifting Attitude Research
Success in life is always a virtue humans strive to achieve, but how can a person really achieve true
success? Some people say that a positive attitude is the key to success in life, but others state that
attitude is less important when achieving success. Without a doubt, a positive attitude will always be
the key to prosperity in life. Everyone's life revolve around success. A teenager will always try to get
an A on a test, and a hardworking mother will always try to give her children the love and affection
they need. Without a positive attitude, that hardworking mother and teen will never be able to grasp
success. An uplifting attitude is the essence of success in life because a positive attitude can pave the
way for important career opportunities and an encouraging ... Show more content on

That career is a job that someone works on persistently through trial and error, without loosing a
positive attitude. A Forbes study has shown that 83% of new businesses that promote encouraging
and uplifting attitudes grow twice their size in the first year of business. Also, an applicant for a job
will always have an edge over their competitors if they show a positive attitude during the job
interview. These job opportunities are the buds of flowers that will begin to bloom over time.
Furthermore, encouraging actions are the water and sunlight these flowers need to blossom into
magnificent masterpieces. Some people may say that an uplifting attitude is not the only virtue you
need to have in order to achieve a successful career, but a positive attitude is the basis for success in
careers leading to prosperity in life. All other virtues stem out like flower petals while the stem of
positivity holds up all the petals. Positive actions will aid in defeating life's failures and achieving
needed success. Failure occurs everyday, and no one can escape the looming black cloud of failure
in life. The question is, what can a person do to stop that pitch black cloud of failure from ruling

Failures in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Essay
Failures in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller develops a number of significant and central themes throughout the play using
techniques such as characterization, setting and language. The best explored theme in the play is the
theme of failure and disappointments. 'Death of a Salesman' is a modern day play about a salesman,
Willy Loman, his life and his failures in a success driven society and world. He is a victim of "The
American Dream" destroyed by false promises and ideals. As the play unravels we realize that he
more than just a financial failure but also socially, personally and morally. These failures and faults
are not only confined to him but they rub off on his family. ... Show more content on

This again indicates Willy's lost opportunities in life. So Willy is surrounded by great successes in a
society where success and money is what is respected. This means that Willy is far from respected.
A technique Miller employs is using language to aid deeper meanings in the storyline. It is used
frequently throughout the play. The references to the 'jungle' as the setting for Ben's ruthless success
carries uneasy connotations of a place where only the fittest will survive and in which weaker
members will die. Indicating that Willy will not survive in the financial world.
Even after all that Willy went through with his own failure and his sons he still does not understand
why it happened to them. He believes that the only keys to success are contacts and popularity.
Unfortunately, in the business of sales, Willy has outlived his contacts and his popularity (if he ever
had them) and is now unable to make any money. The best example of this is when Biff failed Maths
and was going to fail school Willy said he would
"talk to his teacher and she'd understand".
This shows that Willy thinks he can get by in life by being popular and charming but he realizes the
hard way that this is not true.
Willy Lowman's home is presented as 'small and fragile', surrounded by a wall of apartment blocks
whose presence contributes to the trapped, claustrophobic

Characteristics Of Becoming A Man
What does "becoming a man" mean? When would you say someone has become a man? Becoming
a man means, according to Merriam Webster, one possessing in high degree the qualities considered
distinctive of manhood; such as courage, strength, and vigor. To me becoming a man doesn't happen
at a certain age, but I think it happens at a time when you possess manhood traits. In the Wake Tech
Reader, Rodriguez talks about the independence children want when they grow up in his essay
"Family Values. From what I've learned growing up, becoming a man means having responsibility,
being self dependent, being financially stable to support yourself and possibly others, and having the
toughness and grit to get through anything that gets in your way. If you asked me what the most
important qualities of becoming a man was, I'd probably easily come back and say that
responsibility is. When you become a man you have a lot of things your responsible to take care and
do every so often. You have to be responsible enough to pay your bills and dues on time. You can't
just forget things anymore, so you got to be on top of your game and have a schedule to get all your
tasks done every day. As Winston Churchill once said, "The price for greatness is responsibility." To
be a successful man you need to be responsible for your actions and everything you do. You
shouldn't have to be told to do something and that's a part of the new responsibilities that you have.
Responsibility is one of the main qualities of being a man and without it some men may not be able
to handle what happens in life. As I stated earlier, Rodriguez says kids these days are independent
from their parents when they leave home. "What immigrants know, what my parents certainly know,
is that when you come to this country, you risk losing your children." Rodriguez is saying that it's a
known fact that some kids grow up and come very independent with their family and in some cases
don't come back and stay dependent of themselves. He also states that America encourages you to
"Become your own man." Becoming independent is probably the first step in becoming a man. You
don't have your parents doing things for you so you need to start relying on yourself for everything
you need.

Male Expectations In Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman
The Effects of Male Expectations
Male expectations are ever present in our world creating an adverse effect on men making them feel
inferior if they are unable to succeed financially. Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman explicitly
shows just how harmful these expectations can be to a person and their families. The main character
in the play Death of a Salesman Willy Loman is greatly affected by these male expectations. The
man is expected to not only support his family but must also be able to climb to the top of the
corporate ladder. Willy's inability to succeed financially as expected from society in turn affects his
two sons Biff and Happy and his loving wife Linda. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even after all Bernard is trying to do for Biff Willy still thinks of Bernard as "a worm" (Miller 1211)
Willy's wife Linda has always been right by her husbands' side to support, encourage, and love him.
Even when Linda knows that Willy is no longer able to support his family "he has to go to Charley
and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to me that it's his pay" (Miller 1220) she still
encourages and believes in him. Linda never confronts Willy about his financial situation or mental
state because she does not want to embarrass him. Linda is greatly affected by Willy's behavior
although it is not as obvious as the affects Willy has on Biff. The stress put on Linda is something a
person should not have to go through. She has to live with the knowledge that Willy is planning on
killing himself and that he lies to her constantly. When Willy feels he is not idolized or respected by
his sons any longer Linda is there to pick him right back up "Few men are idolized by their children
the way you are." (Miller 1209)
With everything Linda, Biff and Happy try to do to encourage their father, Willy still eventually
comes to the realization that he is a failure. Before this realization strikes Willy he seems to have a
high opinion of himself believing that he is extremely successful. The article "Critical
Misconceptions," by Lee Siegel, goes into detail about Death of a Salesman, "setting the

Failing Forward Essay example
Zack Ray Ms. Paulson TAG 9 28 May 2013 Failing Forward Failing forward is a very important
thing to know how to do for personal growth and leadership. Every great leader and successful
person has learned how to fail forward. To Fail forward there are fifteen steps. I believe that these
steps are fairly accurate, but I'm not really an expert on leadership myself I say these steps are
accurate because for each step he gave specific examples of how certain people used one of these
steps and eventually becomes successful. For example, in chapter two, Maxwell talks about Truett

Eventually all the original monkeys were replaced, and no monkeys had received the cold shower,
so none of them would climb the pole, but none of them knew why. These monkeys represented
failure in the workplace, and how people are prone to get into ruts, or continue to make the same
mistake over and over again. This chapter is about changing your response to failure by accepting
responsibility. The monkeys, at the end had no reason not to climb the pole, so none of them were
accepting responsibility. The final example is showing how it takes many failures to be successful.
There are two groups in a clay sculpture class. One group is graded on quantity of the clay. Fifty
pounds of clay is an A, forty pounds of clay is a B and so on. The other group is graded on quality of
the clay sculptures made. This group was only graded on how well one piece of pottery was made.
Can you guess which group created better quality pottery? Contrary to what you might think, the
first group made better quality clay sculptures. This demonstrates that people learn more from
failing than not failing at all. Throughout this book Maxwell talks about how if you do not fail often,
then you are not being creative or adventurous enough. This can be applied to businesses, where
most people fail around five or six times before actually succeeding, or just to your own hobby, like
sports. All in all the stories in this book are very important to the book. This I think is

Petroski's 'Success Through Failure'
Success Through Failure Without failure, there would be no success. They are connected in such a
way that we can only understand, if we accept our failures in order to reach the latter. Without
failure, you would never learn, and you would never grow. The paradox of finding success through
failure has been shown over and over again throughout history. This relates to the human condition
of self–awareness, because if we can recognize our failures, then we are capable of learning from
them, allowing us to succeed in the future. The self–awareness of being able to learn from our
failures in order to succeed starts as early as when we are infants. It is most notably seen when a
child is learning how to walk. In Petroski's (1985) book, he describes this exact situation; "With
each tottering attempt to walk, our bodies learn from the falls what not to do next time. In time we
walk without thinking and think without falling, but it is not so much that we have learned to walk
as we have learned not to fall." As we can see falling down is a major part of growing up; and it is
sadly something that sticks with us for the rest of our lives. Once we can be self aware of our
setbacks, we will be able to tackle these obstacles to help us move in a more successful direction.
Athletes encounter failure every time they step out onto the court or field; but it is how they cope
with that failure that makes them successful. In my life, I have experienced failure a countless

How the Charcters in the Great Gatsby Viewed Jay Gatsby
TOM Tom thinks of Gatsby as a "home wrecker" and a criminal. He cannot see any of Gatby's
virtues, but rather focuses on and exaggerates his questionable behavior (pursuing Daisy and
bootlegging). Nick, on the other hand, sees both Gatsby's virtues and faults and presents them to the
reader from a neutral point of view. "Who is Gatsby anyhow?" demanded Tom suddenly."Some big
bootlegger?" (PG 104) This quote reveals Tom's suspicions of Gatsby's wealth. Even though Tom
doesn't know that Gatsby is involved in organized crime when he says this, he doubts the fact that he
earned his wealth legitimately. "Self–Control!" repeated Tom incredulously.' I suppose the latest

Mr.Gatz's reasons to be proud of his son are proven to the reader. Mr.Gatz repeatedly states that
Gatsby was meant to be great. DAISY Daisy viewed Gatsby as a tool in which she could use to get
back at her cheating husband with, but without damaging her wealthy lifestyle. Nick, however, saw
Gatsby as a friend and didn't try to use him for his own personal gain. Daisy would have gone along
with the plan of leaving Tom and marrying Gatsby if she had never found out that he was involved
with organized crime. She realized that it might lower her social status if people found out about
Gatsby's proffesion as a bootlegger. "'They're such beautiful shirts,' she sobbed, her voice muffled in
the thick folds. 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such – such beautiful shirts before."
(PG.89). For Daisy the shirts represent wealth. When Daisy starts to cry into the shirts, she is
displaying her interest in materialism. She doesn't cry because she has been reunited with Gatsby,
but rather because of the pure satisfaction all his pricey possessions brings her. Daisy realizes that
she can replace Tom with Gatsby, thereby keeping her wealthy life and getting back at Tom for
having an affair with Myrtle. "'You resemble the advertisement of the man,' she went on innocently.

The Crusades: A Successful Failure Essays
Founder of Constantinople, Constantine claimed the great Byzantine Empire and in turn inherited
the new Holy Roman Empire. With the Edict of Milan in 313, Constantine proclaimed religious
tolerance of Christians throughout the empire and soon the religion spread. Constantine then
transformed the city of Byzantium into the new capital of the Roman Empire, which then was
known and proclaimed as Constantinople. The new capital would profit from its location being
closer to the east frontier, having then the advantage of better trading, and a militarily sound location
being protected on three sides by water. The location of the new capital would without a doubt later
be a cause of concern for the Papal states. Consequently in 1054 a great ... Show more content on

Hoping that the Pope would accede to his wishes, Alexius looked to rectify the Turkish invasions.
November of 1095 Urban II consented to Alexius' request and called all to aid of their fellow
Christians who had been attacked by the Turks. Perhaps having various other reasons for aiding
Alexius, the sole reason that seems to stand out is that of healing relations between the Eastern and
Western Church which had been severed after the Great Schism. To what extent the Crusades were
successful is debatable. Ultimately, however, the Crusades did not manage to heal the split between
the Eastern and Western Church, but did manage to strengthen the Roman Catholic Church and
simultaneously accelerated trade and gave huge economic gains to Western Europe. In other words,
the Crusades were a successful failure. In his call at Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II asked all
fellow Christians to join in the aid of the Christians in the East that were then prone to Turkish
attacks. Requesting that they all leave their lives and run to their aid, Pope Urban II explained how
they would be doing all in the name of God. The Pope let all of the people know that they would all
be greatly recompensed in following God's will and fighting for God and in doing so he further led
the people to understand that any killing they would do would be forgiven since it was all to be in
God's will. In addition, he insisted that if any were to die in this aid, they would all be

Why Failure Is Important for Success
Many beautiful lives come from failures. If there is no failure in a person's life, his life will be
meaningless. We people might face a lot of obstacles along our lives. Sometimes, failures can be
very
painful for a person to face it, but we need to get up, and we need to overcome as well as we can do.
Failure is a beautiful thing. It leads to more chances to try something new. Failures are inevitable
vicissitudes for human beings, and we need to take advantages from these benevolent failures
without
lorning in them.
From "Zero", the story by Paul Logan states some very good examples of a student life's
hardships. If a student is thinking in a wrong way, he is likely to be failed in college. Just a
mood can turn over a student lost or succeeded in many subjects. This is look like a narrow gorge
between failures, dark artesian and successes, glittery mountains. Paul Logan said, "His failure
ignited
at the sight of his report card erupted into a burning flame in his chest." Later, he paid very good
attention on his studying, and he succeeded his college subjects in glistens. That he believed even
failure, as painful as it is, doesn't have to be ending makes a lot of improvement on himself. In his
studying, he used advantage of his failures as steps of great success. In this point, I really like

Covenant leaders have the ability to empower those who work in their organizations by "giving
people meaningful work to do and treating them well as they do it" (Moisan, 2007 p. 95) as this

types of leadership styles and the traits that encompass those styles. One is like night and the other
like day they are the opposite of each other in most every way. One of the ways that they do share a
similarity is that given the circumstances both can in their own way be effective. Question is though
can they both be sustainable for the long term. Narcissistic leadership styles are only as good as the

on April 13, a low pressure warning on the hydrogen tank appeared. Knowing there was danger to

A big part of the reason Leopolda saw Marie as "different" proved to be that Marie was part Native
American which meant that Satan had a stronger presence in her than the other white children. In
many ways Marie Lazzare proves herself to be heroic throughout both stories "Saint Marie" and
"Flesh and Blood"(1957). Even though she is only fourteen in "Saint Marie" she successfully
escaped a dangerous situation with a mixture of luck and intelligence. Marie uses intuition, strength,
and impulse to break free from Leopolda's grasp, while at the same time being lucky enough to be
successful at escaping by fooling the other nuns. At the same time she is an anti hero because Marie
put herself in that situation not because she primarily wanted to be part of that religion, but because
she was trying to fit in where she felt welcomed which is caused by her naivety.
When she goes back to see her years later, Leopolda is very unwell, sickly, and skinny. Leopolda
lives a very stagnant life. She lives in the same room at the convent that she always has and she is in
bed most of the day. In a lot of ways Marie is lucky that she didn't go down the same path as
Leopolda like she wanted to initially. We are able to see that twenty years later Marie feels sorry for
her which indicates that Marie is satisfied with what she has done with her life.
Marie can still sometimes seem childish for example in "Flesh and Blood" she wants to show off

Keep Doing Things That Don 't Work
Keep Doing Things That Don't Work
One of the easiest ways to fail at life is to simply do things that don't work. Many highly successful
people create a plans, stick to them, and continue doing what works to achieve their goals. But this
is a no–no if you want to fail at life. For example, let's say you're selling candy and building
clientele in one area. Instead of staying in that one area continuing to sell candy and build clientele,
which is working, move to another area where there's no clientele and start all over again. This
would be a smart thing to do if you let someone take over your business while you build clientele
somewhere else. But trying push a circle peg inside a square one until it breaks, instead of going to
find another square peg that fits, is a great way to fail. An example of this is Randy from TV show
South Park when he purchased an empty, creepy looking Blockbuster store. Nobody else wanted it
so he bought it thinking it was a great investment, but apparently he thought he could do something
that Blockbuster hasn 't already done. People are now watching online movies and DVDs, meaning
movie stores and VHS tapes are almost non–existent. If something isn 't working out, just let it go,
unless you 're Thomas Edison who created a thousand concepts for the lightbulb and on his
thousandth try he was finally successful. So this concept can go either way. Be Unreliable One of
the most powerful success–killers is being unreliable. When people lose trust

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton is considered to be one of the greatest Antarctic explorers of all time,
not because that he was successful in all his expeditions. In fact all of the expeditions he undertook
were failures. So why is he given this legendary status? His simple ability to lead the men in his
crew to safety, to handle the most stressful situations with calmness and change his plans as per the
situations has rendered him to become a subject for many research studies throughout the world.
In his expedition during 1906, to the South Pole, he single handedly man hauled a sledge to within

Willy Loman Character Analysis
The premise of the American Dream is that everyone has the right to pursue their dreams and
happiness, and with hard work and ambition it can be realized. The only problem with this idea is
that it is not necessarily true for everyone, especially Willy Loman, the protagonist of Arthur
Miller's Death of a Salesman. Willy Loman is a character who deeply believes in the dream, which
for him is financial success, but his delusions of what success is and how to become successful
ultimately prevent him from achieving the dream. The minor characters in the play highlight Willy's
flaws and failures, which destroy his dream. This story is about Willy Loman, a salesman, who is a
suicidal, unsuccessful, father to his sons Biff and Happy and jealous of his neighbor Charley. As
shown through the play, Charley's success and Biff's failures clearly highlight Willy's flaws and
failures.
Charley, the neighbor of the Lomans, is the foil to Willy emphasizing Willy's flaws and failures in
his career and as a parent. For example, from the story it is evidently told to us that Charley has a
successful job and Willy tries to compete with him but just can't. Willy even has to "go to Charley
and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend it's his pay." This shows that Willy is so desperate to
appear successful to his family that he has to ask his neighbor for money to pretend he is making
money as a salesman. Charley even goes as far as offering Willy a job, which he turns down because
he is insulted and embarrassed at the mere insinuation that he needs it, even though he really does.
Charley says to Willy "When the hell are you going to grow up?"(97) Charley recognizes Willy is a
failure at his job, but Willy refuses to accept that. Willy is so deluded that he has a good job that he
turns down a job which guarantees him money every week, and he does not even have to go on the
road. Another way Charley serves as a foil to Willy is demonstrated through their children. In one of
the scenes, Bernard comes over to tell Willy that Biff, the football star, had "flunked math"(72).
Although Willy is somewhat upset, he says that he will talk with the teacher to get his grade raised.
Willy thinks that he can just hand feed

In Arthur Miller's play, Death of A Salesman, deals with the life of Willy Loman, a salesman whose
life becomes projected with illusion always toward a future that promises success and social
prestige. Willy Loman believes in the concept of being well liked: to be prosperous and achieve the
American Dream. Willy has illusions in every perspective of his life, present and past. For instance,
Willy believes that his sons are successful and important which in reality is the opposite. Willy
believed that the American Dream can be easily achieved. He was nothing more than a dreamer in

Anthony Robbins Why Do We Fail
Why do we fail? It's a hard question to answer. As Tony Robbins said, "I've come to believe that all
my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that
have created the new level of living I now enjoy." Success is not earned easily, but requires hard
work in order to be achieved. The only other option is failure, where we take shortcuts and try to be
successful without doing the work that is needed to be done. In order to be successful one will
always fall and get back up to learn from those mistakes in order to become better. I for one say,
failure is good because no one is perfect. To make yourself better is to learn from a different

Sometimes life just throws big failures at you and many people quit and don't care about the
positives, which can be learned from. The way you answer back defines the person you are, not the
beginning. I encourage those to break down the rock and to become successful. Everyone makes
mistakes. It's that simple. The one downfall is only yourself and if you don't get back up on your feet
and learn that valuable lesson then nothing will be possible. On the other hand, if you find the
motivation to do so, it will take time, but those are positive steps to a brighter successful future. As
Warren Buffet said, "The first rule is not to lose. The second rule is not to forget the first rule." If
you feel like you lose and fail, just push yourself to not break the rule and maintain success.
Understand? You can do it, its not that difficult if everyone can do it. I have failed many times and I
gave up without thinking about the positives. It just shuts us down. You cry and become too
emotional to the point where stress takes over and build a dark cloud over yourself. As years passed
on, tasks became harder for me and the thought of killing myself would be the best option to get out
of the bubble. I realized that help is always offered, so why quit on everything that you achieved on
so far? You work hard in order to make those failures disappear and clear out the cloud. My

Success is something everyone strives for in life, and the basis of what is needed to gain it has been
relatively the same since the 1860s. The means needed to acquire what is needed for success

no crops for the southerners to eat, making their living extremely hard with little food to live off of.
This was not the only type of insect that made their lives harder, they also faced blood eating
insects. Barns also wrote "Bugs", which also appeared in The Sod House, she wrote that, "In moving

The “Successful Failure” That Was Apollo 13 Essay
The "Successful Failure" That Was Apollo 13
Shortly after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed and walked successfully on the Moon for the
first time in history, another lunar mission almost ended in disaster without the valor and strong
leadership it took to get three men back to Earth. Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks), Jack Swiggert
(played by Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise (played by Bill Paxton) blasted off on the Apollo 13
mission on April 11, 1970, in trying to collect samples from the surface of the Moon and survey it.
Swiggert took the place of the more experienced Ken Mattingly (played by Gary Sinese) since
Mattingly was the only one not immune to the measles after one of the other astronauts had

While the movie provides the dramatic fuel to entertain anyone that can understand the danger the
men faced, the real story lies behind the successful failure that was Apollo 13 in the three astronauts
and NASA experts. Within the storyline a multitude of examples of the leadership skills, theories,
and traits that were all called upon in desperation to successfully bring the astronauts home can be
found. The real success is seen within the leadership attributes of Apollo Commander Jim Lovell,
Flight Director Gene Kranz, and the astronauts and NASA experts as two groups, as they each
worked in separate ways to find solutions to the various problems that plagued this mission.
Jim Lovell was in many ways the perfect commander to have flying that disastrous mission due to
his experienced background and his determination. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a young
adult and succeeded as a pilot in the military before becoming an astronaut for NASA. These
qualities showed that he had the main characteristics of a team leader; he was capable of being
directive and participative as both his Scouting and military service would have required him to be.
Most importantly Lovell was achievement–oriented, always striving to do better and challenge the
process by looking for improvement. This can be seen through Tom Hank's performance in the
movie by his constant restatement of everything NASA is telling

Essay on The Successful Hero on a Path to Failure
The Successful Hero on a Path to Failure
What is a hero? Is a hero is a great individual with powers or qualities that separate him from the
rest of the society or world for that matter. In a sense, perhaps, I think a hero can be much more than
just having these particular qualities. In my opinion, a hero is someone that also commands great
respect. There must also have been a great event or deed for someone to be deemed a hero. In the
heroic tale of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh himself is a hero. He has the qualities required for being a
hero, but he is lacking. He fails to exhibit self restraint and wise decision making. That doesn't
necessarily mean that a hero must be perfect in order to be one. A hero is supposed to ... Show more

was more important to see the ones that kept the city moving and expanding. From the point of view
of certain gods, however, Gilgamesh made too many mistakes. Gilgamesh himself was part god, but
he still was part human and nothing could change that about Gilgamesh. The story of Gilgamesh is
an epic tale that revolves around the life of a hero. This is the first issue. Gilgamesh doesn't think of

Gilgamesh felt the fear of it in his belly. He said to himself that he would seek the son of Ubartutu,

avoided. He said to himself that he would hasten to him, the dangers of the journey notwithstanding.

death before

The ' Lanval ' By Marie De France
The Breton lai "Lanval", written by Marie de France in the twelfth century, is a short romantic poem
focused on a foreign knight, Lanval, and his life after meeting a faerie lover. The poem is set in the
time of King Arthur, at a place named Carduel–a city in the along the borders of Arthur's kingdom,
Logres. In "Lanval" failure is a negative situation brought upon oneself by their inability to maintain
their virtue, thus success in the Middle Ages was heavily influenced by loyalty and integrity. Within
"Lanval", failure always ensues after a character breaks a promise or lies to another person, whether
doing so is intentional or not. When this situation occurs, the characters are not directly considered
failures by others, but instead failure arises from the circumstances of their situation. This can be
seen when Lanval simultaneously breaks his promise and insults the Queen:
I alone love
A lady who'd win the prize
Over all women I've known of
And I'll tell you this, without disguise
Just because you need to know
Her serving maids, a poor or low
One, even, the poorest in her train,
Is better than you are, Lady Queen:
In beauty of body and of face,
In goodness and in well–bred grace. (Marie 294–303)
Not only does this outburst cause Lanval to lose his lover, but now, he must also prove to King
Arthur that he did not insult his honor by demeaning the Queen during his fit of rage. If Lanval had
not acted this way, he still could have been a successful knight, yet the

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
The American dream is strongly associated with the identity of America and everything our country
stands for: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller, the
protagonist Willy Loman believes a person will be happy once they obtain success by living the
American dream; if you are unable to achieve this goal then you are a failure. The play is divided
into two categories: successes and failures. The image of the American Dream depicted in society
influences Willy's own perception of success and is the cause of his failures. Success is a main
theme in "Death of a Salesmen". There is a fine line between the characters, those who are
successful and those who aren't. Ben and Charley, Willy's older brother and friend, are two of the
luckier ones in the play, whereas Willy and the rest of the Loman family aren't as lucky. Ben and
Charley's success both affect Willy, but in different ways.
One of Willy's biggest challenges is thinking a successful life is a happy one. This misjudgment
derives from his childhood and the abandonment of his father. With his father gone, Ben was left as
the only male figure in Willy's life. Ben eventually leaves Willy too and ends up finding diamonds,
becoming rich. Willy interprets Ben's instant wealth with being successful.
Ben's role in the play is mostly seen through flashbacks and hallucinations from Willy. To Willy,
Ben embodies the entire American dream, by starting out poor and becoming rich. His

Essay on A Successful Failure in Apollo 13 Project
After watching the Apollo 13 movie, it is interesting to know that this was a "Successful failure" of
a project. This is due to the fact that astronauts returned to Earth safely but they never made it to the
moon. After the crew headed for the moon they had to disappointedly cancel the mission before it
could be completed and return to earth, when the oxygen tank that exploded caused the spacecraft to
malfunctioning.
A brief history to puts things in perspective, Apollo program was established in July 1960 by the

say that the planning and quality planning was also successful. The crew had to go through rigorous
testing in order to be certain that all quality methods (i.e. in–process and appraisal methods) were
followed when preparing for this mission critical project. As a result the Apollo 13 smoothly entered
the lunar corridor, meaning besides the glitch to the mission which was one engine failure, all was
set.
The Apollo 13 crew were able to do a television broadcast, this was on the night of the 13th of April
1970, they were showing how the mission was going and how was everything going in the
spaceship, the Commander, Jim Lovell closed the broadcast by this message "This is the crew of
Apollo 13. Wish everybody there a nice evening and a, we're just about to close out our inspection
of Aquarius and get back to a pleasant evening in Odyssey. Goodnight." .........
Shortly after the broadcast, flight control as routine check asked the crew to check the cyro tanks; it
was John Swigert who did the checking. After the cyro tanks were checked the technicians on the
flight control heard a disturbing message from the Apollo 13. John Swigert said "Ok Houston,

Naft A Successful Or A Failure Program
Over the last 20 years, thousands of individuals have searched for answers if whether NAFTA has
been a successful or a failure program. Furthermore, we have forgotten or ignored the fact that
millions of campesinos had or have sacrifice their lives for us to have our fruits and vegetables, our
clothes, shoes and even our cars. As members of society, we do not question ourselves if NAFTA
has really benefited our poor people or the impact of NAFTA in the lives of thousands of poor
campesinos from the rural areas of Mexico and the United States. I must clarify that behinds
NAFTA, there is slavery, dehumanization, exploitation and other factors that have impacted the
workers on both the United States and Mexico. in disagreement with the ... Show more content on

In addition, NAFTA guaranteed better wages and by rising the incomes, it was assumed that the
lower class would earn more money not only to survive, but to be able to invest their money on a car
or have a small business, which would persuade Mexicans that it was not necessary to leave the
country and search for better opportunities somewhere else.
Even though the impact of NAFTA has fundamentally changed Mexico in many ways; now, people
have access to electronic appliances, expensive clothes and luxury cars, the treaty never met it
promises. For example, the migration from Mexico to the United States, did not stop as president
Bill Clinton argued. According to the article, "A fair farm bill", the president of the time, Bill
Clinton argued that NAFTA would eliminate the necessary large–scale of migration from Mexico
because of the creation jobs and other redundant projects. However, that was not the case due to the
fact that in between 2002 and 2005, Mexico defeated countries such India, the Philippines and
Turkey in the role of global migration (Institute). Furthermore, the Institute for Agriculture and
Trade Policy states on the article "A fair Farm Bill" that during the period of 2002 and 2005, "... the
number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico increased by 1.5 million to 6.2 million, with a
calculation of 500,000 undocumented Mexicans entering the United States per year." The provided
data proves that NAFTA

American Beauty
American Beauty A Sociological Movie Review American Beauty, a film that was written by Allan
Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in 1999 is a unique piece that demonstrates many sociological
themes throughout the development of the plot. The characters strive to portray themselves as the
All American Family. They live in a nice house, drive nice cars and seem perfectly normal to the
general public, but the audience is allowed to view the deep set issues that plague the main
characters; Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening), Jane Burnham
(Thora Birch), and Jane's best friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari). As the plot develops there are
many obvious parallels relating the lives of the characters to Merton's Strain ... Show more content

During the course of the film, Lester Burnham goes through a large change. When we first meet
Lester he is living his life as a ritualist. He goes to work every day because that is what he is
supposed to do, but he puts in little to no effort and he has little regard for the completion of his
goals. He has no motivation. His marriage is failing and he has an empty relationship with his
daughter. Lester says "both my wife and daughter think I'm this gigantic loser, and they're right, I
have lost something. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but I know I didn't always feel this sedated.
But you know what; it's never too late to get it back" (American Beauty). From this statement we
can see that there is going to be a change in Lester over the course of the movie. When he meets
Jane's friend Angela we can see an immediate change in Lester. He lusts for her constantly and his
life becomes consumed by trying to spend time with her and help her to be attracted to him. He
suddenly becomes more enthusiastic about life. He describes this as feeling that he had been in a
coma for twenty years and he is finally waking up. After this Lester completely alters his lifestyle.
He leaves his job, begins to work out everyday, buys his dream car and starts smoking pot with
Ricky Fitz. Before he met Angela, Carolyn was in charge of everything that happened around the
house and she made all of the

Definition Essay On Fear
Yet when you look closely, you'll find that every fear you experience is actually made of thought. it's
thought appearing real.
Fear destroys creativity, hope, peace and joy. We have to commit every day to banishing fear from
our lives. But a tremendous number of people live their lives paralyzed by fear. Have confidence to
develop humility. Only courage can overcome fear.
Is fear really a choice? What is fear, really? where it comes from in the first place?I Where it goes
when it's not there? I Indeed have no answers. A question has to have an answer. And it is now
clearer to me that we indeed have a choice, between 2 "fears" – one false, one True: that is when we
worry, we are anxious, or live in fear – of anything. Well, in those moments ... Show more content

Since I can at least intellectually recognize that the source of all fear is thought, I don't have to make
a big deal out of being afraid.
Feel the fear and be done with it, is no doubt a phrase that you have heard uttered. You probably
muttered a few choice phrases beneath your breath in response! It's easy to say this when you aren't
really afraid, is probably what you were thinking. Successful people you will generally hear them
reference the fact that one of their greatest motivating forces was in fact fear of failure. Their fear
drove them to work harder and leave no stone unturned. This is a great example of how a potential
negative force can be turned into a powerfully positive motivating factor.
Fear is something that is triggered instinctively. It is part and parcel of our primary instinct to
survive. You might say it is a primitive instinct. In fact it is so deeply embedded into our psyche that
it comes upon us instinctively and automatically. We feel our bodily senses tuning up and shifting
into red alert.
Thomas Edison said many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to
success when they gave

The And Its Effect On Society

  • 1. The And Its Effect On Society Throughout the ages, the centuries that have passed, there have always been those that have suffered in silence or amidst the pity of others, and there has always been the question of whether the suffering makes us stronger as a person and leads to success, or damages us and we never truly recover. It is true, we are all different, stigmas affect us in various ways and can either aid us or hinder us; however, one thing that unites us is our courage, our belief, and our will, the will that will either make us or break us. Strength, it can be more than brute force, it is more than brute force, it is also courage and determination; when those are extinguished, I fear strength has died and in its place is spawned a type of pestilence, a strength known as pessimistic strength, a cavern in which all of the defeated gather and dwell on their failures. Being pessimistic is the effortless way out, it is the path that is lined without light and without success; being optimistic is the stronger way out, it is the path that is lined without darkness and without fear of failing; optimism often times brings with it failure, but those who are strong know that failure is a necessary part of success, those who are strong know that success requires never giving in to pessimism, and they know, above all, that success comes because failure has first graced them and they never gave up, no matter what the circumstance. There have been many who have suffered and found success, one such example is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Summary Of Srinivasha RamaanujanBy John Keats collaborated on several ground breaking papers. But in 1917, as a result of the climate and a poor diet, Ramanujan contracted tuberculosis. A well known story tells Hardy visiting him in hospital; unable to think what to say. Placing Ramanujan along side John Keats may seem a bit paradoxical as he former belonging to Mahemtics the latter to English Literature. Moreover, Ramanujan has never been marked having an interest in English language nor in literature. But the juxtaposition is apt and appropriate in the sense that both the heroes of respective faculties are te best examples of the proverb, "Men live in deeds not in years". John Keats lived for only twenty–sic years. In his short span of life granted to him, he dived deep into the ocean of literature and gave many precious verses that are peculiar and unique. He left an everlasting imprint on the body of English literature by devoting his life to the service of English Literarure. He lived through many odds in life. Miseries dominated in his life. He died of tuberculosis. He stands no way less than the other poets, some were fortunate even to spend enough to a century. Likewise, Srinivasha Ramanujan lived only thirty– three years. For him also, life was not a bed of roses– trails and distributions became part and parcel of his life. But he remained engrossed in his mathematical passion notching up several milestones in his short life span. Even though he had lived for only thirty–three years, he has contributed a lot ... • 5. The Paradox Of Success Research Paper Another discipline that widely displays the paradox of finding success through failure is science. In science there have been many great success stories, where scientists have achieved their success through failure. An example of this is Thomas Edison, who experienced many setbacks in life but did not let that stop him from reaching his goals. "Thomas Edison was one of the most productive inventors in American history. With 1,093 U.S. patents and more in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, no other inventor has come close to Edison's output" (Edison, 2007). His resiliency is what led to him finally getting it right. On his failed attempts, Edison said, I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Interestingly enough, Thomas Edison who also struggled with setbacks, was a close friend of Henry Ford and urged him to pursue his dreams of manufacturing cars. Edison's past experience allowed him to be able to give him this sound advice. It wasn't always easy for Ford, who grew up knowing "that an individual could get ahead in the world by working hard. But social or economic conditions were not an excuse," (Ford, 2003). He worked very hard, despite his economic status to become the success that he was and still is today. His work ethic and mindset are what pushed him to keep going, even when things were not going his way. He stated, "You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars," (Ford, 2003). I really like this metaphor of success, because it is completely true. If we are able to have enthusiasm towards what we are trying to accomplish, we will be more likely to reach it. This is similar to what a wise professor of mine says, " If your not having fun, you're not learning." Which goes hand in hand with success as well, because if you are not enjoying what you are doing than you will not have any motivation to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Elizabeth Gilbert's TED Talk: Grit, Passion Or Failure? Success, in the words of the Merriam–Webster's dictionary is: The correct or desired result of an attempt. Granted, there is a vast collection of definitions for the word success. You would think that Merriam–Webster would know the true definition of success, but what exactly defines true success? In fact, how does one embody success? Using examples from TED talks, a true definition of what the characteristics of a successful person are will be revealed. I believe a successful person demonstrates the qualities of grit, passion and failure. In the TED talk of Angela Lee Duckworth– "The key to success? Grit." she talks about her 7th grade math students. When grading papers she discovered a staggering difference between her best and worst students. Elizabeth Gilbert's TED talk– "Success, failure and the drive to keep creating." creates a well brought statement on the term "failure". Many people would consider failure as bad, that it ruins us both mentally and physically. However, these statements are baseless. Gilbert begins by expressing her feelings on being known as the girl who wrote Eat, Pray, Love. She says that the fans who loved her book would be disappointed because her next book would not be Eat, Pray, Love and her haters would be disappointed as well. She had no way out, she was trapped in a whirlwind of failure. Regardless, she used grit and reminded herself of her passion and continued on. She states, "I had to find a way to make sure that my creativity survived its own success. And I did, in the end, find that inspiration, but I found it in the most unlikely and unexpected place. Some people say that a positive attitude is the key to success in life, but others state that attitude is less important when achieving success. Without a doubt, a positive attitude will always be the key to prosperity in life. Everyone's life revolve around success. A teenager will always try to get an A on a test, and a hardworking mother will always try to give her children the love and affection they need. • 11. Failures in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Essay Failures in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Arthur Miller develops a number of significant and central themes throughout the play using techniques such as characterization, setting and language. The best explored theme in the play is the theme of failure and disappointments. 'Death of a Salesman' is a modern day play about a salesman, Willy Loman, his life and his failures in a success driven society and world. He is a victim of "The American Dream" destroyed by false promises and ideals. As the play unravels we realize that he more than just a financial failure but also socially, personally and morally. These failures and faults are not only confined to him but they rub off on his family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This again indicates Willy's lost opportunities in life. So Willy is surrounded by great successes in a society where success and money is what is respected. This means that Willy is far from respected. A technique Miller employs is using language to aid deeper meanings in the storyline. It is used frequently throughout the play. The references to the 'jungle' as the setting for Ben's ruthless success carries uneasy connotations of a place where only the fittest will survive and in which weaker members will die. Indicating that Willy will not survive in the financial world. Even after all that Willy went through with his own failure and his sons he still does not understand why it happened to them. He believes that the only keys to success are contacts and popularity. Unfortunately, in the business of sales, Willy has outlived his contacts and his popularity (if he ever had them) and is now unable to make any money. The best example of this is when Biff failed Maths and was going to fail school Willy said he would "talk to his teacher and she'd understand". This shows that Willy thinks he can get by in life by being popular and charming but he realizes the hard way that this is not true. Willy Lowman's home is presented as 'small and fragile', surrounded by a wall of apartment blocks whose presence contributes to the trapped, claustrophobic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Characteristics Of Becoming A Man What does "becoming a man" mean? When would you say someone has become a man? Becoming a man means, according to Merriam Webster, one possessing in high degree the qualities considered distinctive of manhood; such as courage, strength, and vigor. To me becoming a man doesn't happen at a certain age, but I think it happens at a time when you possess manhood traits. In the Wake Tech Reader, Rodriguez talks about the independence children want when they grow up in his essay "Family Values. From what I've learned growing up, becoming a man means having responsibility, being self dependent, being financially stable to support yourself and possibly others, and having the toughness and grit to get through anything that gets in your way. If you asked me what the most important qualities of becoming a man was, I'd probably easily come back and say that responsibility is. When you become a man you have a lot of things your responsible to take care and do every so often. You have to be responsible enough to pay your bills and dues on time. You can't just forget things anymore, so you got to be on top of your game and have a schedule to get all your tasks done every day. As Winston Churchill once said, "The price for greatness is responsibility." To be a successful man you need to be responsible for your actions and everything you do. You shouldn't have to be told to do something and that's a part of the new responsibilities that you have. Responsibility is one of the main qualities of being a man and without it some men may not be able to handle what happens in life. As I stated earlier, Rodriguez says kids these days are independent from their parents when they leave home. "What immigrants know, what my parents certainly know, is that when you come to this country, you risk losing your children." Rodriguez is saying that it's a known fact that some kids grow up and come very independent with their family and in some cases don't come back and stay dependent of themselves. He also states that America encourages you to "Become your own man." Becoming independent is probably the first step in becoming a man. You don't have your parents doing things for you so you need to start relying on yourself for everything you need. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Male Expectations In Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman The Effects of Male Expectations Male expectations are ever present in our world creating an adverse effect on men making them feel inferior if they are unable to succeed financially. Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman explicitly shows just how harmful these expectations can be to a person and their families. The main character in the play Death of a Salesman Willy Loman is greatly affected by these male expectations. The man is expected to not only support his family but must also be able to climb to the top of the corporate ladder. Willy's inability to succeed financially as expected from society in turn affects his two sons Biff and Happy and his loving wife Linda. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even after all Bernard is trying to do for Biff Willy still thinks of Bernard as "a worm" (Miller 1211) Willy's wife Linda has always been right by her husbands' side to support, encourage, and love him. Even when Linda knows that Willy is no longer able to support his family "he has to go to Charley and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to me that it's his pay" (Miller 1220) she still encourages and believes in him. Linda never confronts Willy about his financial situation or mental state because she does not want to embarrass him. Linda is greatly affected by Willy's behavior although it is not as obvious as the affects Willy has on Biff. The stress put on Linda is something a person should not have to go through. She has to live with the knowledge that Willy is planning on killing himself and that he lies to her constantly. When Willy feels he is not idolized or respected by his sons any longer Linda is there to pick him right back up "Few men are idolized by their children the way you are." (Miller 1209) With everything Linda, Biff and Happy try to do to encourage their father, Willy still eventually comes to the realization that he is a failure. Before this realization strikes Willy he seems to have a high opinion of himself believing that he is extremely successful. • 17. Failing Forward Essay example Zack Ray Ms. Paulson TAG 9 28 May 2013 Failing Forward Failing forward is a very important thing to know how to do for personal growth and leadership. Every great leader and successful person has learned how to fail forward. To Fail forward there are fifteen steps. I believe that these steps are fairly accurate, but I'm not really an expert on leadership myself I say these steps are accurate because for each step he gave specific examples of how certain people used one of these steps and eventually becomes successful. For example, in chapter two, Maxwell talks about Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick–fil–A. First Truett and his brother Ben opened a restaurant called the Dwarf Grill. After becoming a successful business, tragic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually all the original monkeys were replaced, and no monkeys had received the cold shower, so none of them would climb the pole, but none of them knew why. These monkeys represented failure in the workplace, and how people are prone to get into ruts, or continue to make the same mistake over and over again. This chapter is about changing your response to failure by accepting responsibility. The monkeys, at the end had no reason not to climb the pole, so none of them were accepting responsibility. The final example is showing how it takes many failures to be successful. There are two groups in a clay sculpture class. One group is graded on quantity of the clay. Fifty pounds of clay is an A, forty pounds of clay is a B and so on. The other group is graded on quality of the clay sculptures made. This group was only graded on how well one piece of pottery was made. Can you guess which group created better quality pottery? Contrary to what you might think, the first group made better quality clay sculptures. This demonstrates that people learn more from failing than not failing at all. Throughout this book Maxwell talks about how if you do not fail often, then you are not being creative or adventurous enough. This can be applied to businesses, where most people fail around five or six times before actually succeeding, or just to your own hobby, like sports. All in all the stories in this book are very important to the book. This I think is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Petroski's 'Success Through Failure' Success Through Failure Without failure, there would be no success. They are connected in such a way that we can only understand, if we accept our failures in order to reach the latter. Without failure, you would never learn, and you would never grow. The paradox of finding success through failure has been shown over and over again throughout history. This relates to the human condition of self–awareness, because if we can recognize our failures, then we are capable of learning from them, allowing us to succeed in the future. The self–awareness of being able to learn from our failures in order to succeed starts as early as when we are infants. It is most notably seen when a child is learning how to walk. In Petroski's (1985) book, he describes this exact situation; "With each tottering attempt to walk, our bodies learn from the falls what not to do next time. In time we walk without thinking and think without falling, but it is not so much that we have learned to walk as we have learned not to fall." As we can see falling down is a major part of growing up; and it is sadly something that sticks with us for the rest of our lives. Once we can be self aware of our setbacks, we will be able to tackle these obstacles to help us move in a more successful direction. Athletes encounter failure every time they step out onto the court or field; but it is how they cope with that failure that makes them successful. • 23. The Crusades: A Successful Failure Essays Founder of Constantinople, Constantine claimed the great Byzantine Empire and in turn inherited the new Holy Roman Empire. With the Edict of Milan in 313, Constantine proclaimed religious tolerance of Christians throughout the empire and soon the religion spread. Constantine then transformed the city of Byzantium into the new capital of the Roman Empire, which then was known and proclaimed as Constantinople. The new capital would profit from its location being closer to the east frontier, having then the advantage of better trading, and a militarily sound location being protected on three sides by water. The location of the new capital would without a doubt later be a cause of concern for the Papal states. Consequently in 1054 a great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hoping that the Pope would accede to his wishes, Alexius looked to rectify the Turkish invasions. November of 1095 Urban II consented to Alexius' request and called all to aid of their fellow Christians who had been attacked by the Turks. Perhaps having various other reasons for aiding Alexius, the sole reason that seems to stand out is that of healing relations between the Eastern and Western Church which had been severed after the Great Schism. To what extent the Crusades were successful is debatable. Ultimately, however, the Crusades did not manage to heal the split between the Eastern and Western Church, but did manage to strengthen the Roman Catholic Church and simultaneously accelerated trade and gave huge economic gains to Western Europe. In other words, the Crusades were a successful failure. In his call at Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II asked all fellow Christians to join in the aid of the Christians in the East that were then prone to Turkish attacks. Requesting that they all leave their lives and run to their aid, Pope Urban II explained how they would be doing all in the name of God. The Pope let all of the people know that they would all be greatly recompensed in following God's will and fighting for God and in doing so he further led the people to understand that any killing they would do would be forgiven since it was all to be in God's will. • 25. Why Failure Is Important for Success Many beautiful lives come from failures. If there is no failure in a person's life, his life will be meaningless. We people might face a lot of obstacles along our lives. Sometimes, failures can be very painful for a person to face it, but we need to get up, and we need to overcome as well as we can do. Failure is a beautiful thing. It leads to more chances to try something new. Failures are inevitable vicissitudes for human beings, and we need to take advantages from these benevolent failures without lorning in them. From "Zero", the story by Paul Logan states some very good examples of a student life's hardships. If a student is thinking in a wrong way, he is likely to be failed in college. Just a mood can turn over a student lost or succeeded in many subjects. This is look like a narrow gorge between failures, dark artesian and successes, glittery mountains. Paul Logan said, "His failure ignited at the sight of his report card erupted into a burning flame in his chest." Later, he paid very good attention on his studying, and he succeeded his college subjects in glistens. That he believed even failure, as painful as it is, doesn't have to be ending makes a lot of improvement on himself. In his studying, he used advantage of his failures as steps of great success. In this point, I really like Edison said, " If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded

After two days in flight, the crew began to worry. "Okay, Houston. We've had a problem here." (Space Quotes) The Apollo 13 movie changed Swigert's famous "Houston, we've had a problem here" to "Houston we have a problem here" coming from James Lovell instead of John Swigert. 200,000 miles from Earth, on April 13, a low pressure warning on the hydrogen tank appeared. Knowing there was danger to be, the crew did the "cryo stir" procedure. The procedure was to stop the gas from settling into layers. Slowly running out of power and water big concerns began to worry the crew. With no source of heat, cabin temperatures became freezing for the crew. Also with the freezing temperatures, some food became inedible for the crew. The astronauts left the command module section of the spacecraft and used the lunar module as a lifeboat. Even though she is only fourteen in "Saint Marie" she successfully escaped a dangerous situation with a mixture of luck and intelligence. Marie uses intuition, strength, and impulse to break free from Leopolda's grasp, while at the same time being lucky enough to be successful at escaping by fooling the other nuns. At the same time she is an anti hero because Marie put herself in that situation not because she primarily wanted to be part of that religion, but because she was trying to fit in where she felt welcomed which is caused by her naivety. • 39. Keep Doing Things That Don 't Work Keep Doing Things That Don't Work One of the easiest ways to fail at life is to simply do things that don't work. Many highly successful people create a plans, stick to them, and continue doing what works to achieve their goals. But this is a no–no if you want to fail at life. For example, let's say you're selling candy and building clientele in one area. Instead of staying in that one area continuing to sell candy and build clientele, which is working, move to another area where there's no clientele and start all over again. This would be a smart thing to do if you let someone take over your business while you build clientele somewhere else. But trying push a circle peg inside a square one until it breaks, instead of going to find another square peg that fits, is a great way to fail. An example of this is Randy from TV show South Park when he purchased an empty, creepy looking Blockbuster store. Nobody else wanted it so he bought it thinking it was a great investment, but apparently he thought he could do something that Blockbuster hasn 't already done. People are now watching online movies and DVDs, meaning movie stores and VHS tapes are almost non–existent. If something isn 't working out, just let it go, unless you 're Thomas Edison who created a thousand concepts for the lightbulb and on his thousandth try he was finally successful. So this concept can go either way. Be Unreliable One of the most powerful success–killers is being unreliable. When people lose trust ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Willy Loman Character Analysis The premise of the American Dream is that everyone has the right to pursue their dreams and happiness, and with hard work and ambition it can be realized. The only problem with this idea is that it is not necessarily true for everyone, especially Willy Loman, the protagonist of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Willy Loman is a character who deeply believes in the dream, which for him is financial success, but his delusions of what success is and how to become successful ultimately prevent him from achieving the dream. The minor characters in the play highlight Willy's flaws and failures, which destroy his dream. This story is about Willy Loman, a salesman, who is a suicidal, unsuccessful, father to his sons Biff and Happy and jealous of his neighbor Charley. As shown through the play, Charley's success and Biff's failures clearly highlight Willy's flaws and failures. Charley, the neighbor of the Lomans, is the foil to Willy emphasizing Willy's flaws and failures in his career and as a parent. For example, from the story it is evidently told to us that Charley has a successful job and Willy tries to compete with him but just can't. Willy even has to "go to Charley and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend it's his pay." This shows that Willy is so desperate to appear successful to his family that he has to ask his neighbor for money to pretend he is making money as a salesman. Charley even goes as far as offering Willy a job, which he turns down because he is insulted and embarrassed at the mere insinuation that he needs it, even though he really does. Charley says to Willy "When the hell are you going to grow up?"(97) Charley recognizes Willy is a failure at his job, but Willy refuses to accept that. Willy is so deluded that he has a good job that he turns down a job which guarantees him money every week, and he does not even have to go on the road. Another way Charley serves as a foil to Willy is demonstrated through their children. In one of the scenes, Bernard comes over to tell Willy that Biff, the football star, had "flunked math"(72). Although Willy is somewhat upset, he says that he will talk with the teacher to get his grade raised. Willy thinks that he can just hand feed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Willy Loman In Arthur Miller's play, Death of A Salesman, deals with the life of Willy Loman, a salesman whose life becomes projected with illusion always toward a future that promises success and social prestige. Willy Loman believes in the concept of being well liked: to be prosperous and achieve the American Dream. Willy has illusions in every perspective of his life, present and past. For instance, Willy believes that his sons are successful and important which in reality is the opposite. Willy believed that the American Dream can be easily achieved. He was nothing more than a dreamer in which reality said, repeatedly, that everything ends in disappointment. Therefore, Willy's downfall is not being able to separate his delusions from reality. • 51. Anthony Robbins Why Do We Fail Why do we fail? It's a hard question to answer. As Tony Robbins said, "I've come to believe that all my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy." Success is not earned easily, but requires hard work in order to be achieved. The only other option is failure, where we take shortcuts and try to be successful without doing the work that is needed to be done. In order to be successful one will always fall and get back up to learn from those mistakes in order to become better. I for one say, failure is good because no one is perfect. To make yourself better is to learn from a different viewpoint, to study the common errors and come up with a devised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sometimes life just throws big failures at you and many people quit and don't care about the positives, which can be learned from. The way you answer back defines the person you are, not the beginning. I encourage those to break down the rock and to become successful. Everyone makes mistakes. It's that simple. The one downfall is only yourself and if you don't get back up on your feet and learn that valuable lesson then nothing will be possible. On the other hand, if you find the motivation to do so, it will take time, but those are positive steps to a brighter successful future. As Warren Buffet said, "The first rule is not to lose. The second rule is not to forget the first rule." If you feel like you lose and fail, just push yourself to not break the rule and maintain success. Understand? You can do it, its not that difficult if everyone can do it. I have failed many times and I gave up without thinking about the positives. It just shuts us down. You cry and become too emotional to the point where stress takes over and build a dark cloud over yourself. As years passed on, tasks became harder for me and the thought of killing myself would be the best option to get out of the bubble. I realized that help is always offered, so why quit on everything that you achieved on so far? You work hard in order to make those failures disappear and clear out the cloud. My experiences ... The “Successful Failure” That Was Apollo 13 Essay The "Successful Failure" That Was Apollo 13 Shortly after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed and walked successfully on the Moon for the first time in history, another lunar mission almost ended in disaster without the valor and strong leadership it took to get three men back to Earth. Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks), Jack Swiggert (played by Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise (played by Bill Paxton) blasted off on the Apollo 13 mission on April 11, 1970, in trying to collect samples from the surface of the Moon and survey it. While the movie provides the dramatic fuel to entertain anyone that can understand the danger the men faced, the real story lies behind the successful failure that was Apollo 13 in the three astronauts and NASA experts. Within the storyline a multitude of examples of the leadership skills, theories, and traits that were all called upon in desperation to successfully bring the astronauts home can be found. The real success is seen within the leadership attributes of Apollo Commander Jim Lovell, Flight Director Gene Kranz, and the astronauts and NASA experts as two groups, as they each worked in separate ways to find solutions to the various problems that plagued this mission. Jim Lovell was in many ways the perfect commander to have flying that disastrous mission due to his experienced background and his determination. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a young adult and succeeded as a pilot in the military before becoming an astronaut for NASA. These qualities showed that he had the main characteristics of a team leader; he was capable of being directive and participative as both his Scouting and military service would have required him to be. Most importantly Lovell was achievement–oriented, always striving to do better and challenge the process by looking for improvement. Is a hero is a great individual with powers or qualities that separate him from the rest of the society or world for that matter. In a sense, perhaps, I think a hero can be much more than just having these particular qualities. In my opinion, a hero is someone that also commands great respect. There must also have been a great event or deed for someone to be deemed a hero. In the heroic tale of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh himself is a hero. • 63. The ' Lanval ' By Marie De France The Breton lai "Lanval", written by Marie de France in the twelfth century, is a short romantic poem focused on a foreign knight, Lanval, and his life after meeting a faerie lover. The poem is set in the time of King Arthur, at a place named Carduel–a city in the along the borders of Arthur's kingdom, Logres. In "Lanval" failure is a negative situation brought upon oneself by their inability to maintain their virtue, thus success in the Middle Ages was heavily influenced by loyalty and integrity. Within "Lanval", failure always ensues after a character breaks a promise or lies to another person, whether doing so is intentional or not. When this situation occurs, the characters are not directly considered failures by others, but instead failure arises from the circumstances of their situation. This can be seen when Lanval simultaneously breaks his promise and insults the Queen: I alone love A lady who'd win the prize Over all women I've known of And I'll tell you this, without disguise Just because you need to know Her serving maids, a poor or low One, even, the poorest in her train, Is better than you are, Lady Queen: In beauty of body and of face, In goodness and in well–bred grace. • 69. Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller The American dream is strongly associated with the identity of America and everything our country stands for: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller, the protagonist Willy Loman believes a person will be happy once they obtain success by living the American dream; if you are unable to achieve this goal then you are a failure. The play is divided into two categories: successes and failures. The image of the American Dream depicted in society influences Willy's own perception of success and is the cause of his failures. Success is a main theme in "Death of a Salesmen". There is a fine line between the characters, those who are successful and those who aren't. Ben and Charley, Willy's older brother and friend, are two of the luckier ones in the play, whereas Willy and the rest of the Loman family aren't as lucky. Ben and Charley's success both affect Willy, but in different ways. One of Willy's biggest challenges is thinking a successful life is a happy one. This misjudgment derives from his childhood and the abandonment of his father. With his father gone, Ben was left as the only male figure in Willy's life. Ben eventually leaves Willy too and ends up finding diamonds, becoming rich. Willy interprets Ben's instant wealth with being successful. Ben's role in the play is mostly seen through flashbacks and hallucinations from Willy. To Willy, Ben embodies the entire American dream, by starting out poor and becoming rich. His ... It's easy to say this when you aren't really afraid, is probably what you were thinking.
