Description of community policing as you would define it. Then, explain the functionality of
community policing based on your definition. Finally, explain how your definition of community
policing aids in organizational improvement. I would define community policing as a philosophy
that provides tools for both law enforcement and the residents to work together for the greater good.
I know that on paper the theory makes perfect sense. Officers go into the urban areas, mainly
neighborhoods that struggle with socio–economic issues. However, the deployment of these officers
needs to be specific and intentional. By this I mean that as Community Officer, I know that the
position is not for everyone. When I was promoted to my current position my supervisors could not

serving and what their true needs are. I know that there are many with good intentions but the road
to hell is paved with good intensions. Officers need to walk the beat, and meet the residents. Once

difficult for the police to convince the public to trust them. It would take months, if not years to
change the relationship dynamic. Another issue is related to the conduct/training of patrol officers.
