The Theme Of Perspective In The Restaurant At The End Of...
The book The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams follows the theme of
perspective. All throughout the book, the main characters toy with the fact of just how large the
universe is, and that their lives are pretty obsolete. As first shown in Chapter 10, the Total
Perspective Vortex, a torture device, shows " The Universe, the whole infinite Universe. The infinite
suns, the infinite distances between them and yourself an invisible dot on an invisible dot, infinitely
small". This machine shows yourself compared to the entire universe and just how tiny we really
are. Another way this theme is portrayed is by the way people react to supposed 'big things'. The
protagonists find themselves at Milliways, the restaurant at the end

Historical Essay: World War II in Philippines
Introduction
World War II has a great impact on the Philippines. This essay is going to study the causes, courses
and effects of World War II in the Philippines. The purpose of this essay is also to look at how
Batanes was involved in the World War II and how the war impacted the island. This essay will also
analyze the immediate affects and the long–term effects of the war.
The Province of Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines and is the smallest province
in the country with a population of 16,604 (Conesus 2010) people and land area of 219.01 km2. The
capital of Batanes is Basco, 280 kilometers north of Apari, Cagayan. The island is approximately
162 kilometers north of Luzon and 190 kilometers south of Taiwan. This island–province comprises
of ten small islands; out of which, Batan, Sabtang and Itabayat are the mainly inhabited islands and
are the most visited because of its scenic beauty. A few of the must visit places are: Vayang Rolling

On example is the Bataan death march, it is estimated that about 10,000 troops died even before
reaching the destination. The Manila American Cemetery Memorial, located in Taguig, Metro
Manila. This cemetery and memorial is a resting place of 17,202 American soldiers who died
fighting in the war. It is built in the honor of the soldiers died in battles in the Philippines and New
Guniea. However, this war made US and Philippines relationship stronger; resulting in a huge
support from the United States to the Philippines. As for the Ivatans in Batanes, after the Japanese
left because of the Battle of Batanes, it took the Ivatans time to recover from the happenings. The
Ivatans managed to restore the Basco lighthouse that had gotten destroyed by the Japanese in the

Personal Narrative: Who Am I Am?
Yes, you are right. It really kicked in as of this year. This is the first year that I've kind of gone to
another level. I'm the guy in town who did a lot of indie stuff. I'm very well–known in the
independent film circuit 'cause I have this different way of being who I am. I started out on
something huge. I did a couple of small things, and then I landed a role in I Spy with Eddie Murphy.
My part was a supporting lead part in the movie. I worked with him for four months. To get that size
of part, he had to approve my audition. And the first thing Eddie said to me when he met me was,
"You real funny, man." And I was like, "Well, I can die now," 'cause I literally got what I wanted. It
was the craziest thing in the world. It was great just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
9/11 happened. And the world shut down. And production shut down. So the whole schedule got
changed, and my brother couldn't do the movie. So it was like the best moment of my life and one of
the saddest moments because I booked that with my brother and then we didn't get to do it. There
are three people that shape who I am. My father, my older brother, and Eddie Murphy. And that is
the truth. And here I would have had the opportunity to be around two of them. I worked for four
months with Eddie, and it was amazing. He was really cool with me. Eddie Murphy did my off–
camera lines. He sat beside the camera on an apple box feeding me lines. I couldn't believe it. We
got along really well. We clicked. We had the best time in the world. Eddie Murphy is really a
legend, and I was very fortunate to work with him. And I still have access to Eddie after all these
years––personal access. I could call Eddie right now {laughs}. Not a lot of people can say that.
I was on this massive high––this is 2001 we filmed this. It carried me into 2002 because the movie
didn't come out till November 2002. So I could ride this wave. I was starting to go out for big things.
I went out to LA for pilot season in 2002. I was down there for four months. I got really close to
being on a sketch comedy show that Cedric the Entertainer had. It came down to between me and
another guy. And it went to the other guy. And that was kinda the last thing I did in

Comparing Douglas Adams 'Difficulty With My Life-Style'
1. Douglas Adams uses cause and effect to make a persuasive agrument about the relative impact of
the an action by explaining cause and effect is a never ending cycle. Adam's text is shows how
people actions can effect people/things and aren't consciously aware of how this effect people every
day life. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the effects of the actions that are being taken–it
is just a part of life. Arthur said, "I seem to be having a tremendous difficulty with my life–style" by
Arthur saying caused a tremendous war that could of been prevented for happening. However that
was not the case, the opponents believe there was only one cause that caused Arthur to feel that
certain way about his life. They did not noticed there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A rhetorial similarity between The Penultimate Peril and The Hitchiker's Guide is both texts argue
that cause and effect have a cycle that keeps going and certain things led to something and than back
again. Peoples actions determine the different outcomes that a person decides to do. Than the
outcomes have other outcomes and that continues to go in a circle. A difference between the two
texts is Adams thinks each individual cause has a specific outcome while Snickets thinks an action
can have many outcomes. In The Hitchiker's Guide the reader can see there is only one cause to why
everything happen he is more specific in his story. In The Penultimate Peril Snickets the reader can
see the mysteries could have been solved in many ways. Snikets follow the basic rule of cause and
effect which shows any effect can have multiple possible causes; the task of cause and effect is to
determine the correct one. Snicket made a metaphor to that when he said, "the world is like a calm
pond, and that anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the
pond, spreading circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by
one tiny action." One action can have many possibles to be

Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows
The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the
introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana's color
analogue is Douglas Sirk's melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a
point when the art form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the
technology. Though All That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first
technicolor films, the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored
shots. Most of the film's landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots often feel
more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the film's interior shots. At the
same time, color doesn't define the story and characters in the same way as early Technicolor films
like Michael Curtiz's The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a constant
signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters and
individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don't drastically change to suit the
narrative, but they're still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color more as an emotional
cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is
a film made in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of color.
Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately
auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to create
discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the
protagonists ventured into a different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood.
Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new
worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away
from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase 3D
technology, we can't help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences like "How Far I'll
Go." Rather than switching

Psychological Contract Theories of Managing

grouping of interdependent concepts (mental images of anything formed by generalization from

The Theory X And Theory Y Essay
The ability to predict the behavior of employees in an organization is a key element in encouraging
and ensuring that employees to produce desired results. Some employees usually take great pride in
their work and obtain satisfaction from performing their duties well. Such employees are innately
motivated (Douglas McGregor: Theory X and Theory Y, 2015). Other employees are never proud of
their work. They simply work because they believe that they cannot survive without their jobs. Such
employees are externally motivated (they require an outside force to compel them to perform their
duties) (Theory X and Theory Y: Understanding Team Member Motivation, 2016). These ideas
about employee behavior and much more have been developed by social psychologist and
management professionals, such as Douglas Mc Gregor, Abraham Maslow, and Herzberg, in the
form of theories to help managers and employees predict each other's behavior. This paper focuses
on the Theory X and Theory Y, which were both developed by Douglas McGregor. It describes the
theories and analyzes their effectiveness in predicting human behavior.
Theory X and Theory Y
Unlike other theories that usually focus on employees, Theory X and Theory Y focus on managers
and the perceptions they have about their employees, which in turn influences their behavior
towards their employees (Theory X and Theory Y: Understanding Team Member Motivation, 2016).
Different managers have different perceptions about the things that motivate

A Guide to the Humorous Galaxy What would you do if your closest friend told you that he or she
was an alien and the world was about to blow up in 12 minutes? The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy by Douglas Adams is about a man named Arthur Dent who sets off on an adventure when
his good friend, Ford Prefect, turns out to be an alien and tells him that Earth is about explode. In
the novel, Ford helps Arthur escape the destruction of Earth and together they survive in the
universe as hitchhikers, with the help of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Ford's universal
encyclopedia. Throughout the novel, Douglas Adams uses a humorous style to keep the reader
engaged as indicated by his diction, characterization, and applied theme. To begin ... Show more

Adams humorously depicts each character with his or her own distinctive personality. For instance,
he depicts Marvin the robot as depressed when Marvin says, "'I only have to talk to somebody and
they begin to hate me. Even robots hate me. If you ignore me I expect I shall probably go away'"
(214). The way in which Adams jocularly illustrates Marvin's depressed attitude makes it funny.
This instance is additionally funny because no one would expect a robot to have any emotions.
Another way Adams's characterization reveals his humorous style in this case is the fact that Marvin
is so depressed he makes witty remarks that can make one laugh. This characterization is also shown
in Zaphod's attitude when he says, "'If there is anything more important than my ego I want it found
and shot now'" (98). Adams shows Zaphod as a carefree and self–centered person who can make
some funny decisions. Zaphod also is a character that makes jokes that can make the reader laugh.
Arthur's confused personality is yet another example of Adams's use of characterization. This is
shown when Arthur says "'I don't know if this sounds like a silly question, but what am I doing
here?'" (54). Arthur's confused attitude can make him ask laughably dumb questions. Also, Adams
makes Arthur, shown as an ordinary human, go on an adventure in a very extraordinary universe,
which is entertaining for the audience. Douglas Adams's humorous style is effectively revealed

The Universe, a seemingly endless void, with small amounts of space (which the Universe has A

would imply that, at light speed, you could reach the Sun's neighboring star in mere seconds, but in
reality, and at twice the speed of light, a trip that far would take two years. Science fiction would
also allude to the idea that traveling through an asteroid belt is dangerous, that is also false. In fact,
there is a lot of science fiction in media. But, rarely any in any book, game, or movie can you ever

I actually REALLY enjoyed this book. I received the novel as a gift from a family friend over the
summer but only really got around to reading it recently and, I have to say, I have never read
anything quite this unique.
The meaning of life is plot number 2 in the book, and, it was equally as entertaining as the mischief
that transpired between Arthur and his gang, consisting of Ford Perfect, an alien named Zaphod, and
another alien by the name of Trillian. To sum THIS plot line up, two hyper intelligent beings (named
"MICE") create a superior supercomputer with the processing capabilities of nothing discovered
before, they ask the computer what the meaning of life is, and it reveals that it will take a few billion
years to process a coherent answer. When the answer is finally processed, it is than revealed that a
more powerful computer is out there somewhere. That computer is Earth, and, yadda yadda, Earth
was annihilated five minutes before it was finished processing, causing the mice to want Arthur's
brain so the true nature of life can be revealed to them.
It was hard to find a significant passage in this piece, because there are so many side plots and
important pieces, but, I think an important piece would be.

Baby Boomers are Jealous
Generation X'ers have been described as "fanatically independent individuals pathologically
ambivalent about the future, and brimming with unsatisfied longings for permanence, for love, and
for material possessions."
(Lauren, p.64) This less–than–flattering description of our generation has since been expanded by
the media to the point that myself and my peers are described as a bunch of apathetic slackers
unconcerned with family values, godless cynics resentful of the preceding generations.
Since Douglas Coupland's Book Generation X came out in 1991, many things have been said about

The Bataan Death March Effect On War
The Bataan Death March effect on war On December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed the United
States' Naval Base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The Japanese did not stop there. Their
attacks continued to the Philippines, where U.S. forces were stationed. After some time battling, the
U.S. and Filipino troops had to surrender and the Japanese took them over. The Bataan Death March
did not only affect the United States, Philippines, and Japanese, it affected how war trials were held
and carried out. The question is how did the Bataan Death March affect modern day warfare? The
first attack against the U.S. done by the Japanese was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,
1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m., it was devastating. The Japanese
fighter planes destroyed around 20 naval ships and eight of them were some of the United State's
biggest battleships. The Japanese didn't just destroy vessels, they also managed to destroy around
300 airplanes. The amount of American soldier's lives lost was heart–rending, there were over 2,000
Soldiers and Sailors lost from the American fleet. There were also more than 1,000 wounded or
critically injured on that horrifying day. The day of the Pearl Harbor attacks became known as "a
date which will live in infamy", and this day was only the beginning. This was only the midpoint of
Japan's attacks, the second half was the Bataan Death March. One of the biggest questions that

Refusal Of The Potsdam Ultimatum
1. Refusal of the Potsdam Ultimatum
1.1 The End of the Pacific War As the Second World War was coming to a close, all that was needed
for the war to end was the surrender of the Japanese. General Douglas MacArthur stated that he
believed that the bomb was completely unnecessary from a military perspective and that Japan was
"practically defeated." Truman knew that Japan was in danger of losing the war, yet he still chose to
make the decision to drop the bomb, which shows there were other factors he took under
consideration. Anticipating that the end of the war was near, a meeting was held on the second of
July between the United States, the United Kingdom and China in the city of Potsdam. The meeting
effectively sent the message to Japan that her main enemies had agreed together on the ultimatum.
This is important because it demonstrates the unity of nations involved in the decision about what to
do in response to Japan. Those nations were in agreement over the result of the meeting, which led
to the creation of the Potsdam Ultimatum.
1.2 The Potsdam Ultimatum
The Potsdam Ultimatum was released on July 26th, 1945, outlining the conditions of surrender
presented to Japan by the United States, Britain and China. America had given a warning to Japan
about the outcome of any refusal stating that "the full application of our military power, backed by
our resolve will mean the inevitable and complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and just
as inevitably the utter

Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams satirizes many
targets in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams came up with the idea for The
Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in a drunken haze in Germany while he was lying in a
field with the stars spinning over him (Adams, Douglas 12) which explains the style of humor, and
the satire in the novel, which does not appear to make sense at first, but eventually does. Adams
almost forgot about his idea for the novel (Gaiman 7). The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy satirizes many targets, but especially government and religion. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the

Contrary to that fact of radical atheism, however, the satire of religion is generally mild. For
example, God does exist, but His final message to the Universe is "We apologize for the
Inconvenience" (Adams, Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, IV 665). However, other
"minor gods" also exist, with Thor being a recurrent character. Another particularly memorable
moment is when Zarquon, a Jesus–surrogate character, returns to the Universe... a few seconds
before the Universe ends (Galaxy, II 272), demonstrating how Adams believes that even if religions
are correct, that would not change much. Finally, Adams satirizes religion very effectively with the
in–book device, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Mk. II, which is a device which appears to be
a bird, but has immense power. God indeed exists in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but that's
about the extent of His powers. His entire involvement in the series is minimal. The opening words
of one of the novels are "In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people
angry and been widely regarded as a bad move" (Adams II, 176). So the first thing God does in the
entire history of everything was a mistake, in Adams's eyes. Next, when God sent Jesus, in the
words of the novel, "One man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice
to people for a change" (Adams I, 18). So, according to Adams, God has almost no power to

Visit Of The Mcdonald 's On Okeechobee Boulevard
For this assignment I chose to visit the McDonald's on Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach
and the Chick–Fil–A on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard in West Palm Beach. I visited McDonald's
first just after what could be considered the dinner rush. When walking into the store the first thing I
noticed was the floor was fairly dirty, especially near the trash receptacles. There were clearly
visible items of food that had fallen off of people's trays as they attempted to clear their trays off. I
got into the line to order and noticed that there were three people ahead of me. There was only one
McDonald's employee working the registers while I saw another standing by on their cell phone. I
believe the second employee not working the registers was a manager. She was unaware of the line
that had grown and when she looked up she signed into a register to help. I had gone into the store
with the intention of only ordering a sweet tea, but if I were to have been offered an item I would
buy it. I gave my order to the manager of only a sweet tea and she gave me my total. It was
interesting to see that the manager did not try to upsell my order as I was only getting a $1 drink. As
the drinks were a self–service, I went to go get the sweet tea and found they were out of sweet tea. I

The book, Whale Done, written by Ken Blanchard, exemplifies how a business manager named Wes
Kinsley learns the key to managing relationships while on a trip to SeaWorld. Kinsley uncovers the
secret to managing positive relationships with people by witnessing how trainers at SeaWorld
receive incredible responses from their whales by highlighting their positive behaviour, and ignoring
or redirecting their negative behaviours. In the book, Blanchard contrasts the "GOTcha" manager,
one who seeks to only accentuate the negative properties of individuals' actions with the "WHALE
DONE" manager, who highlights and tries to reinforce positive behaviour. The goal of Blanchard is
for readers to understand the application of the "Whale Done!" management ... Show more content

However, Blanchard fails to discuss the importance of negative responses in communication.
Negative responses are useful in order to keep workers inline and stopping them from breaking
rules. It can be necessary in many situations; however, managers of today still abuse negative
responses. There are examples of modern day managers using negative responses and finding
success. For example, John Tortorella, the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National
Hockey League has found success from yelling at players and criticizing them, but he actually went
on to win the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning the Jacks Adam award
for attributing the most to his teams success. (Cooper, 2015). He is often seen as a villain in the
hockey community, but his success is clearly attributable to his negative responses and negative
attitude. This tough relationship he has with his players must improve their play because he has been
a coach on and off in the league since 2001. Blanchard's ideologies clearly go against everything
John Tortorella stands for, but there is no denying his success. This style of management can be
successful in some places, and modern managers have to understand when to apply this style.
Clearly Blanchard's methods are successful, but so are

Douglas Adams: The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe
Douglas Adams: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe What a funny story Douglas Adams was
an English author that wrote all sorts of funny books, like the trilogy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy. These books had a ton of humorous dialogue, building up of the characters and a pretty
decent plot structure. The book that stood out the most with these three ideas has to be The
Restaurant at the End of the Universe. This book isn't for everyone, but it is a great way to just get
lost in the story and follow the journey through space. Dialogue throughout the book is just all over
the place, from being humorous to being too childish for some people. Most of the time the humor is
pretty dark, but it does make the story intriguing. An example of this was when the characters in the
book finally reach The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

just offensive. The dialogue or the language structure can make people look the other way because it
can be childish: "The man raced along the corridor, the floor bucking beneath his feet like an excited
blanket" (Adams 180). It's to easy of word play. There isn't much of reading in between the lines;
which makes the reading seem like a lower level of reading because there isn't that complex.
Characterization that Adams puts in his book shows off the characters in a new light. The details that
were put in the book to show off the characters, but the personalities he gives the characters make
them seem more real. "His silver body gleaned in the dusty sunbeams and shook with the continual
barrage which the building was still undergoing" (Adams 182). Like with any detail in books it
highlights what the characters look like, but again, he gives them personalities

Introduction
The Brookdale Centre is currently suffering from many problems such as the poor management
style, a lack of staff training, lack of marketing and a lack of public transport to the center. Due to
these problems the Brookdale center is losing opportunities for business and are losing profit
causing a decreased revenue for the business.
Within the Brookdale center it has also been noted that there are health and safety issues within
certain areas such as the food court where a railing fell and it is important for these problems to be

Management & Operations Strategy
A new management and operations strategy is vital for the Brookdale center to improve as the
current management style of the American way has not been working and making staff unhappy
within the workplace. As staff have a lack of motivation within the Brookdale center it is vital to
analyze the different theories on work motivation such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, McGregor's
XY theory and Adams Equity theory.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs:
Abraham Maslow developed a Hierarchy of Needs (appendix 3) which is used to understand human
motivation, management training and personal development. This hierarchy is used to determine the
responsibility of employers to provide a workplace environment that encourages and enables
employees to fulfil their own unique potential.
Maslow's hierarchy is used within organisations by employers as their employees have basic human
needs and a right to strive for self–actualisation. Successful organisations will be ones who care,
understand, encourage and enable personal growth towards their employees.
This theory can be used within the Brookdale centre as understanding individual needs of staff
members can be used to help motivate them so they can reach the top of the hierarchy of having a
self–worth and feeling accomplished with what they have achieved within their job.

Reading Culture 5th Edition By Diana George And John Trimbur
The book Reading Culture 8th Edition by Diana George and John Trimbur is a wonderful
assemblage of different contexts for critical reading and thinking. As one skims through the first
chapter of this book, almost immediately does it intrigue the reader to continue to progress through
the argumentative essays, visual illustrations, and notable references one is so familiar with. The
authors expressed their several definitions on the word "culture" and how it was used differently as
time passed by. The authors also expressed their thoughts on digital communication and presented
arguments from various writers who depict the pros and cons of this new cyber age of connectivity
and interactivity. Forty–eight pages of academically– acclaimed arguments, illustrations, and essay
examples help the reader understand what culture is and their composition course better.
Most Americans are not aware of the many definitions the word culture has had over its course of

classify their ideal of culture in two classes– high and low culture. As the authors state, "a cultured

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Essay
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy As the human race makes life–changing discoveries, it is
made apparent that there is always more to learn as the universe, instead of becoming familiar, is
becoming absurd. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams, as well as the
2005 film adaption, portrays absurdity to be an all–encompassing system in the universe. Through
the introduction and attempt to understand lack of reason, the narration of important elements and
the human perception of the universe, the novel is as a whole, more complete than the film. With
these points it is irrefutable that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy develops the theme of
absurdity with greater prowess than the film, resulting in a deeper ... Show more content on

The novel, rather than describing a complete lack of order, has characters trying to give meaning to
events around them. This reinforces the theme of absurdity by strengthening the impact each
instance of absurdity has on the novel. The film overlooks this through an overall lack of
explanation, resulting in the overall theme of absurdity being collectively, less meaningful. By
blatantly introducing absurdity, and attempting to understand the lack of reason, the novel provides a
deeper understanding of the theme of absurdity than the film. Furthermore, the novel's narration of
events allows greater flow of information, with the film's restrictive media preventing specifics that
further the theme of absurdity from being disclosed. The towel is a symbolic item in The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, with the Guide, an intergalactic encyclopaedia, that is also the
narrator, reads: "A towel... is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can
have," (Adams 22). The novel highlights the theme of absurdity more copiously than the film, with
the Guide, a universally esteemed source of information, presenting such a trivial object with
arbitrary significance. The film includes the towel, but without a narrator, the towel's significance is
never stated, and this key instance of absurdity is not developed. Similarly, the lack of narration and
explanation of scenes in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy leaves the audience

Abraham Lincoln And The Todds, A Family Divided By War
Abraham Lincoln is best known for his great speeches and his role in the civil war, but what most
people do not know is how he and his wife met and what effect her family had on his presidency. In
Stephen Berry's book House of Abraham: Lincoln and the Todds, a Family Divided By War, Berry
tells about the life of Abraham and his wife Mary Todd. In this book, he includes the influence that
the Todd family had played on his personal life as well as his presidency. This book begins with
Mary Todd's grandfather and eventually he ends with Lincoln's assassination. The main focus of the
author is to give the reader a better understanding of the Todd clan, and also to understand what it
was like to be apart of the family. The content of the book allows for people to go into the mind of
the Todd family. After reading this book, it is easy to see why Abraham had such a difficult time
with the Civil War not just because he was president, but also because his wife's family was split by
it. There are many theories that have come up over the years on how the Todd's influenced Abraham
Lincoln and the decisions he made during the civil war. In the book, he argues that the Todd clan,
even though they all do not have the same mother, is closer than most families during the time
because of the closeness they had. The author writes, "They loved and hated one another at the same
time. They hugged or they throttled one another, depending on the emotional needs of the moment."

Wall Steet Movie Review
The definition of business ethics is described as a company's attitude and conduct towards its
stakeholders – employees, customers, stockholders, and so forth; ethical behavior requires fair and
honest treatment of all parties. The word ethics is defined as "standards of conduct or moral
behavior." The movie Wall Street, was the exact opposite of these definitions. The movie shows
examples of hostile takeovers, insider trading, greed and unethical behaviors in the attempt to build
fortune on the all mighty dollar. The movie focuses on the stock market and the way inside
information is used to make decisions to build cash and profits at the costs of others. It portrays the
decisions one may make when faced with the temptation of green ... Show more content on

The movie is based off the uncertainties of the stock market. People are investing money in hopes of
turning profits but just as it is uncertain losses are also realized. But the more risk you are willing to
take, the higher the reward or pay out can be in the end. This does not only apply to money but to
your actions. In the movie Buddy Fox and Gordon Gekko were willing to risk fines and jail time in
order to gain information to make their returns on investment close to certain.
This movie also taught the lesson that you should always know what you are doing with your money
and if you do your research and homework, you will know what you're investing in and it can bring
higher success. You should never jump into an investment without knowing what you're actually
getting into. You should know what you're investing, the beta tied to the investment and the reward
you are looking to gain. Researching and finding these answers can definitely lead to smarter
investments. Jumping into investments blind and uneducated can lead to loses in money.
Wall Street had a high focus on stocks and bonds. It had some obvious correlations to business
finance as well as subtle lessons. These lessons was a great way to take the words of the text book,
Essentials of Managerial Finance and put them in front of your eyes to see exactly how these aspects
in the book can be applied to reality. This was my first time watching this movie and the

What Are The Five Major Models Of Organizations That...
Individuals are all different but they all share similar characteristics. It comes within the leader to
recognize the differences and similarities. Leaders have to analyze and comprehend the employees
so that workers perform a better outcome. Organizations need a mission to look forward; this
objective should be shared or compatible with employees so that outcomes are better and more
effective. There are five major models of organization that characterized employees. These models
are Autocratic model, Custodial model, Supportive model, collegial model, and the System model
Employers have to know when and why they should apply each model, and if to even apply them at
all. The working environment is an enormous and crucial component that influences employees'
performance. Leaders have to know how and when to motivate the individuals. They have to
understand that workers have to motivate to work, nevertheless they still have to be focused toward
the organization's mission. Organizations are very complex but simple at the same time. An
organization is a group of people that are organized to work together to achieve a common goal or
goals. The organization needs a mission to look forward to, this mission or objective will make the
organization concentrate and act towards their goal. An organization is a mix of relationships,
power, objectives, roles, activities and more other factors. All this characteristics exist when the

Douglas Mawson Contributions
I believe that Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity while contributing to science, he suffered
in many ways, including losing his friends and his sled dogs, he also had a lack of food and energy,
and lastly he had his soles of his feet were actually beginning to fall off. The seasoned explorer,
Douglas Mawson had suffered a lot through his race; he contributed to science, yet still was able to
survive. Henrietta Lacks had her cells taken for scientific purposes without permission from her
family. Phineas Gage survived an extreme dynamite accident which resulted in him having a hole in
his head made by an iron rod. Although you can make a good argument on who endured the most
adversity while contributing to science, Douglas Mawson did suffer a lot; and there are many ways
to support it. Mawson suffered in tons of ways while he was in the race. The first way he suffered is
that he lost his two close friends and his sled dogs which caused him to grieve, this slowed him
down in the race. In the article it states "at 2 a.m. on January 8, Mertz died in his sleep." "Mawson
buried his friend, still in the sleeping bag, beneath a mound of snow blocks at atop." While he was
busy grieving, it slowed him down a lot and distracted him from the race. The second way he
suffered is from lack of food. When you do not eat you get hungry and start to lose energy, this just
made him slow down in the race even more. The third way that he suffered is that the soles of his

GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
Often times when people talk about General Douglas MacArthur, they tend to think of a great
military leader of the World War Two (WWII) or the Korean War. General MacArthur once said, "A
true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the
compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by
the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent." General Douglas MacArthur, also known
as Mac, was a Visionary Leader that not only shaped the outcome of the Korean War but Japan as
well. However, he was not the most Ethical Leader to serve in the United States Military, which led
to him being relieved of duty by President Truman in 1951. In this paper we will review not just
how he was a visionary but at times unethical and how I relate those leadership traits to my own.
VISIONARY LEADERSHIP
General MacArthur was truly a visionary leader. He had the ability to see what needed to be done
and set plans for accomplishing it. One week after the start of the Korean War General MacArthur
had his Chief of Staff start considering an amphibious assault to take out communication in Seoul
("Concepts:," n.d.). Before Mac was able to get approval and conduct his operation he had to
overcome strong objections to his desired incursion site

The Human Side Of Enterprise
Douglas McGregor was an American professor and psychologist who is most famous for his book,
The Human Side of Enterprise, published in 1960. In this work, he conceives and examines two
theories of behaviors in the workplace. They are known as Theory X and Theory Y. These distinct
theories describe how individuals generally behave at work and how different types of managers
might govern their employees. They have been used over the years to help managers to understand
their employees' needs, behavior and how to better manage their staff. These theories can be
analyzed and broken down into three of many sub–topics: Motivation, Leadership Style and Conflict
Resolution. The two basic labels that McGregor created describe the assumptions that managers
might make about their employees' views on motivation and behavior. According to McGregor's
(1960) Theory X, "the average man is by nature indolent" and is typically self–centered and lacks
ambition (p. 2). In this situation, managers are forced to act in an authoritarian manner. They must
coerce their employees to do their jobs, because the assumption is that workers take little to no
initiative. Theory X demonstrates that workers view money and job security as their primary
motivator. Conversely, Theory Y states that people actually enjoy working and will actively seek out
greater responsibility. Managers in this scenario would encourage and emphasize the empowerment
of their employees and would provide a surplus of

In Douglas Adams's novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect
traverse an imperfect galaxy plagued by a lack of individuality. In The Seven Deadly Sins Today,
Henry Fairlie ventures that this galactic epidemic correlates to the transmission of immorality
throughout the world. Douglas Adams utilizes satire and characterization to demonstrate how the
human condition is flawed. Furthermore, Henry Fairlie calls upon the archetypal seven deadly sins
to criticize human banality. Collectively, Adams's wittiness and Fairlie's bitterness encourage the
reader to exercise one's identity. First, Douglas Adams satirizes modern society to delineate the

Essentially, Adams conveys that people are too worried about their financial status and forget to
enjoy life to its fullest. Money becomes a shackle and enslaves the people of planet Earth with one
of the seven deadly sins: greed. The internet dictionary of Princeton University defines greed as
"excessive desire to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves" ( ). Henry Fairlie agrees
with this definition and offers an eloquent sentiment: "The be–all and end–all of life should not be to
get rich, but to enrich the world" (26). However, Fairlie's plea is unheard due to the deafening
materialism of modern society. It is a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless, that those who want "to
enrich" are less abundant than those who want "to get rich." This phenomenon occurs because
wealth is more easily attainable than enrichment. Wealth requires one lucky day at the New York
Stock Exchange or the acquisition of an emerging franchise. Enrichment requires an acute mind and
patience because social change often takes generations to root in the minds of people. The solution
to both Adams' and Fairlie's sinful society rests in patience. People should not try to perform a
lifetime of actions in a fraction of their lifetime. Adams then reveals the twisted prototype for the
space–age hero through the character traits of Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect. Arthur was born and

Douglas Mawson, 'Into The Unknown :Into The Unknown'
Unit 1 ELA Essay
Imagine if you were in the arctic with two other people and both of your travelling mates died; you
were all alone, and you were many miles away what would you do? This is the story of Douglas
Mawson. Douglas Mawson went on a painful journey to the Antarctic("Into the Unknown"). There
is yet still two other people that faced adversity and contributed to science. Henrietta Lacks was
second in facing the most adversity in the course of contributing to science, she has a cancer and she
dies at the age of thirty– one from the cancer. Phineas Gage had the least amount adversity in the
course of contributing to science, he was working one day and a metal pole blasted through his head
and he lived for eleven years after that. Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity in the course
of contributing to science for a few reasons.
Douglas Mawson had travelling mates die on him, as seen in the article "Into the Unknown". To
begin, Ninnis died. Ninnis was walking along and took a different path and he fell into a crevasse
and Mertz and Mawson never found him. Ninnis had all of the valuable gear and most of the food,
this meant that they had to live on very little food. In addition, to Ninnis dying his other travelling
friend Mertz died. Mertz died in his sleep, and Mawson was unsure how he died in his sleep. The
article reveals, "Many years later some researchers speculated that Mertz's debilitation was caused

According to Theory X, the only method to motivate people to work are self interest or coercive
methods (Fisher, 2009, p. 356).
According to Theory Y, Management is responsible for organizing humans, machines and
materials to achieve desired results (Halepota, 2005, p. 16) The difference in Theory Y is that
workers are not lazy and they have a hope of achieving something. In this theory workers have
prospective to achieve something and be motivated and are also given freedom to work in their
own way and express their own ideas to dedicate in the success of organization (Halepota, 2005,
p. 16). It is natural for human beings to put effort into work. Employees like to use their
imagination and creativity to make decisions and in solving problems of organization.(Kermally,
2005, p. 38). When Theory Y is applied, employees attain self determination and ample of
opportunities which results in close relationship and mutual trust of employees and
managers.(Sait, Faruk, Onur 2014). Managers are not always idle. They spend time with people,
are engaged in one or the other stuff of organization and are engaged with people who form unity

Comparing The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy By Douglas...
One of the most fundamental philosophical problems to be solved is the question: what is the
meaning of life? According to Albert Camus, a French existentialist writer and philosopher, a one's
urge to find the ultimate answer for the question is rather absurd. He believed that people search for
the meaning of anything is vain because a source of meaning as such is non–existent. In addition to
that, Camus' literary works are often associated to the idea of absurdism and that is the thing he and
Douglas Adams have in common.
Therefore, the main focus of my essay is absurdity, as it is the main theme in the work of Douglas
Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But why has Adams chosen it to be one of The
Hitchhiker's leading topics?
Of course, one can argue that there cannot be a proper sci–fi novel without a certain level of
absurdity included. Douglas Adams appears to agree with the idea but at the same time he seems to
believe in "everything in moderation" kind of approach. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking into account the author's intentions, after a detailed analysis I incline to the hypothesis that
Adams used the absurd as a means of expression of deeper human emotions such as anxiety,
discontent or despair. In my opinion that is the reason why he chose to include the absurd in the
story in the first place. Personally, I can understand his intentions, as it is very likely that no reader
would like a pessimistic story dealing with topics so complex and depressing, and that is why the
absurd is in

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The Universe is a mystery and our origins as a species are slowly unrevealing, however we are still
wondering how exactly we got here. Douglas Adams address this very question in his science–
fiction novel "Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy". A story about a human named Author who, after
witnessing the destruction of Earth, hitchhikes several rides throughout the Universe. Discovering
new worlds and conversing with several alien species with his longtime friend Ford, who Author
recently discovered was also an alien. Douglas Adams is highly known for his observational humor
and satire in his writings. His parody of politics, social commentary and references of pop–culture
are a constant, especially in "Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy". More often than Adam's humor in
"Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy" is the theme of travel in the Universe and space exploration. A
task man has only scratched the surface of but are slowly overcoming every day. While Douglas
Adams may be a science fiction writer not all of what he writes is fiction. There is truth to his work.
I plan to discover how Adams expresses space travel in "Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy" in both
scientific and science fiction aspects, and how has the science fiction genre changed our
understanding and perception of the universe.
Ever since the great space race of the twentieth century, space travel has been a prime objective of
The United States. It was more centered on the political struggles of the United States

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy By Douglas Adams
One of the literary highlights of my life has been reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by
Douglas Adams. The short novel is packed with tons of humor, not leaving any joke untold.
However, despite being by far the funniest book I've ever read, it discusses some fascinating
subjects, both philosophically and scientifically. Because Hitchhiker's Guide is such a fantastic
book, I propose a course based around discussing the topics covered in the book and learning about
the science and philosophy behind the book. The course would allow for in depth discussions of a
plethora of topics like time travel and even the existence of God. It would be great for honors
students because it would take advantage of their natural urge to learn and debate as well as teach
students about material that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, discussing a whale appearing in the sky and subsequently falling to the earth (which
happens in the book, if you haven't read it), would allow for discussion on both the probability of
random events (like a whale appearing in the sky) and life philosophy. Aside from discussing the
topics discussed by the book, the course could take a literary turn and discuss the use of humor and
writing of the book. Douglas Adams has a unique sense of humor, which is largely dominated by
dry, absurdly matter–of–fact statements. This would add a literary perspective to a course that
already discusses STEM and philosophical subjects. Part of the course would require reading The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as reading The Science of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy by Michael Hanlon, a book that discusses the same things the course would, and would give
students a jumping off point for class discussions. This course would offer multiple interesting
topics for everyone, and would foster intellectually stimulating

The Theme Of Perspective In The Restaurant At The End Of...

  • 1. The Theme Of Perspective In The Restaurant At The End Of... The book The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams follows the theme of perspective. All throughout the book, the main characters toy with the fact of just how large the universe is, and that their lives are pretty obsolete. As first shown in Chapter 10, the Total Perspective Vortex, a torture device, shows " The Universe, the whole infinite Universe. The infinite suns, the infinite distances between them and yourself an invisible dot on an invisible dot, infinitely small". This machine shows yourself compared to the entire universe and just how tiny we really are. Another way this theme is portrayed is by the way people react to supposed 'big things'. This essay is going to study the causes, courses and effects of World War II in the Philippines. The purpose of this essay is also to look at how Batanes was involved in the World War II and how the war impacted the island. This essay will also analyze the immediate affects and the long–term effects of the war. The Province of Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines and is the smallest province in the country with a population of 16,604 (Conesus 2010) people and land area of 219.01 km2. The capital of Batanes is Basco, 280 kilometers north of Apari, Cagayan. The island is approximately 162 kilometers north of Luzon and 190 kilometers south of Taiwan. I'm the guy in town who did a lot of indie stuff. I'm very well–known in the independent film circuit 'cause I have this different way of being who I am. I started out on something huge. I did a couple of small things, and then I landed a role in I Spy with Eddie Murphy. My part was a supporting lead part in the movie. I worked with him for four months. To get that size of part, he had to approve my audition. And the first thing Eddie said to me when he met me was, "You real funny, man." So it was like the best moment of my life and one of the saddest moments because I booked that with my brother and then we didn't get to do it. There are three people that shape who I am. My father, my older brother, and Eddie Murphy. And that is the truth. And here I would have had the opportunity to be around two of them. I worked for four months with Eddie, and it was amazing. He was really cool with me. Eddie Murphy did my off– camera lines. He sat beside the camera on an apple box feeding me lines. I couldn't believe it. We got along really well. We clicked. We had the best time in the world. Eddie Murphy is really a legend, and I was very fortunate to work with him. And I still have access to Eddie after all these years––personal access. I could call Eddie right now {laughs}. Not a lot of people can say that. I was on this massive high––this is 2001 we filmed this. • 7. Comparing Douglas Adams 'Difficulty With My Life-Style' 1. Douglas Adams uses cause and effect to make a persuasive agrument about the relative impact of the an action by explaining cause and effect is a never ending cycle. Adam's text is shows how people actions can effect people/things and aren't consciously aware of how this effect people every day life. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the effects of the actions that are being taken–it is just a part of life. Arthur said, "I seem to be having a tremendous difficulty with my life–style" by Arthur saying caused a tremendous war that could of been prevented for happening. However that was not the case, the opponents believe there was only one cause that caused Arthur to feel that certain way about his life. They did not noticed there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A rhetorial similarity between The Penultimate Peril and The Hitchiker's Guide is both texts argue that cause and effect have a cycle that keeps going and certain things led to something and than back again. Peoples actions determine the different outcomes that a person decides to do. Than the outcomes have other outcomes and that continues to go in a circle. A difference between the two texts is Adams thinks each individual cause has a specific outcome while Snickets thinks an action can have many outcomes. In The Hitchiker's Guide the reader can see there is only one cause to why everything happen he is more specific in his story. In The Penultimate Peril Snickets the reader can see the mysteries could have been solved in many ways. Snikets follow the basic rule of cause and effect which shows any effect can have multiple possible causes; the task of cause and effect is to determine the correct one. Snicket made a metaphor to that when he said, "the world is like a calm pond, and that anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the pond, spreading circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by one tiny action." • 9. Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana's color analogue is Douglas Sirk's melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a point when the art form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the technology. Though All That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first technicolor films, the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored shots. Most of the film's landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots often feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the film's interior shots. At the same time, color doesn't define the story and characters in the same way as early Technicolor films like Michael Curtiz's The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a constant signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters and individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don't drastically change to suit the narrative, but they're still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color more as an emotional cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is a film made in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of color. Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to create discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the protagonists ventured into a different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood. Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase 3D technology, we can't help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences like "How Far I'll Go." Rather than switching ... What is your own theory of management? You can describe it in words or draw it as a model. First, I would like to define theory as "perspectives with which people make sense of their world experiences" and as "a systematic grouping of interdependent concepts (mental images of anything formed by generalization from particulars) and principles (generalizations or hypotheses that are tested for accuracy and appear to be true reflections or explanations of reality) that give a framework to, or tie together, a significant area of knowledge. Other employees are never proud of their work. They simply work because they believe that they cannot survive without their jobs. Such employees are externally motivated (they require an outside force to compel them to perform their duties) (Theory X and Theory Y: Understanding Team Member Motivation, 2016). These ideas about employee behavior and much more have been developed by social psychologist and management professionals, such as Douglas Mc Gregor, Abraham Maslow, and Herzberg, in the form of theories to help managers and employees predict each other's behavior. This paper focuses on the Theory X and Theory Y, which were both developed by Douglas McGregor. It describes the theories and analyzes their effectiveness in predicting human behavior. Theory X and Theory Y Unlike other theories that usually focus on employees, Theory X and Theory Y focus on managers and the perceptions they have about their employees, which in turn influences their behavior towards their employees (Theory X and Theory Y: Understanding Team Member Motivation, 2016). Different managers have different perceptions about the things that motivate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adams humorously depicts each character with his or her own distinctive personality. For instance, he depicts Marvin the robot as depressed when Marvin says, "'I only have to talk to somebody and they begin to hate me. Even robots hate me. If you ignore me I expect I shall probably go away'" (214). The way in which Adams jocularly illustrates Marvin's depressed attitude makes it funny. This instance is additionally funny because no one would expect a robot to have any emotions. Another way Adams's characterization reveals his humorous style in this case is the fact that Marvin is so depressed he makes witty remarks that can make one laugh. This characterization is also shown in Zaphod's attitude when he says, "'If there is anything more important than my ego I want it found and shot now'" (98). Adams shows Zaphod as a carefree and self–centered person who can make some funny decisions. Zaphod also is a character that makes jokes that can make the reader laugh. Arthur's confused personality is yet another example of Adams's use of characterization. This is shown when Arthur says "'I don't know if this sounds like a silly question, but what am I doing here?'" (54). Arthur's confused attitude can make him ask laughably dumb questions. Also, Adams makes Arthur, shown as an ordinary human, go on an adventure in a very extraordinary universe, which is entertaining for the audience. The Hitchhiker 's Guide On The Galaxy By Douglas Adams The Universe, a seemingly endless void, with small amounts of space (which the Universe has A LOT of) occupying planets, stars, and other, equally terrifying celestial bodies. Science fiction would imply that, at light speed, you could reach the Sun's neighboring star in mere seconds, but in reality, and at twice the speed of light, a trip that far would take two years. Science fiction would also allude to the idea that traveling through an asteroid belt is dangerous, that is also false. In fact, there is a lot of science fiction in media. To sum THIS plot line up, two hyper intelligent beings (named "MICE") create a superior supercomputer with the processing capabilities of nothing discovered before, they ask the computer what the meaning of life is, and it reveals that it will take a few billion years to process a coherent answer. When the answer is finally processed, it is than revealed that a more powerful computer is out there somewhere. That computer is Earth, and, yadda yadda, Earth was annihilated five minutes before it was finished processing, causing the mice to want Arthur's brain so the true nature of life can be revealed to them. The Japanese did not stop there. Their attacks continued to the Philippines, where U.S. forces were stationed. After some time battling, the U.S. and Filipino troops had to surrender and the Japanese took them over. The Bataan Death March did not only affect the United States, Philippines, and Japanese, it affected how war trials were held and carried out. The question is how did the Bataan Death March affect modern day warfare? The first attack against the U.S. done by the Japanese was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m., it was devastating. The Japanese fighter planes destroyed around 20 naval ships and eight of them were some of the United State's biggest battleships. The Japanese didn't just destroy vessels, they also managed to destroy around 300 airplanes. The amount of American soldier's lives lost was heart–rending, there were over 2,000 Soldiers and Sailors lost from the American fleet. There were also more than 1,000 wounded or critically injured on that horrifying day. The day of the Pearl Harbor attacks became known as "a date which will live in infamy", and this day was only the beginning. • 27. Refusal Of The Potsdam Ultimatum 1. Refusal of the Potsdam Ultimatum 1.1 The End of the Pacific War As the Second World War was coming to a close, all that was needed for the war to end was the surrender of the Japanese. General Douglas MacArthur stated that he believed that the bomb was completely unnecessary from a military perspective and that Japan was "practically defeated." Truman knew that Japan was in danger of losing the war, yet he still chose to make the decision to drop the bomb, which shows there were other factors he took under consideration. Anticipating that the end of the war was near, a meeting was held on the second of July between the United States, the United Kingdom and China in the city of Potsdam. The meeting effectively sent the message to Japan that her main enemies had agreed together on the ultimatum. This is important because it demonstrates the unity of nations involved in the decision about what to do in response to Japan. Those nations were in agreement over the result of the meeting, which led to the creation of the Potsdam Ultimatum. 1.2 The Potsdam Ultimatum The Potsdam Ultimatum was released on July 26th, 1945, outlining the conditions of surrender presented to Japan by the United States, Britain and China. Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams satirizes many targets in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams came up with the idea for The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in a drunken haze in Germany while he was lying in a field with the stars spinning over him (Adams, Douglas 12) which explains the style of humor, and the satire in the novel, which does not appear to make sense at first, but eventually does. Contrary to that fact of radical atheism, however, the satire of religion is generally mild. For example, God does exist, but His final message to the Universe is "We apologize for the Inconvenience" (Adams, Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, IV 665). However, other "minor gods" also exist, with Thor being a recurrent character. Another particularly memorable moment is when Zarquon, a Jesus–surrogate character, returns to the Universe... a few seconds before the Universe ends (Galaxy, II 272), demonstrating how Adams believes that even if religions are correct, that would not change much. Finally, Adams satirizes religion very effectively with the in–book device, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Mk. II, which is a device which appears to be a bird, but has immense power. God indeed exists in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but that's about the extent of His powers. His entire involvement in the series is minimal. The opening words of one of the novels are "In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people angry and been widely regarded as a bad move" (Adams II, 176). So the first thing God does in the entire history of everything was a mistake, in Adams's eyes. For example, John Tortorella, the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League has found success from yelling at players and criticizing them, but he actually went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning the Jacks Adam award for attributing the most to his teams success. Maslow's hierarchy of needs: Abraham Maslow developed a Hierarchy of Needs (appendix 3) which is used to understand human motivation, management training and personal development. This hierarchy is used to determine the responsibility of employers to provide a workplace environment that encourages and enables employees to fulfil their own unique potential. Maslow's hierarchy is used within organisations by employers as their employees have basic human needs and a right to strive for self–actualisation. Successful organisations will be ones who care, understand, encourage and enable personal growth towards their employees. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams, as well as the 2005 film adaption, portrays absurdity to be an all–encompassing system in the universe. Through the introduction and attempt to understand lack of reason, the narration of important elements and the human perception of the universe, the novel is as a whole, more complete than the film. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The novel, rather than describing a complete lack of order, has characters trying to give meaning to events around them. This reinforces the theme of absurdity by strengthening the impact each instance of absurdity has on the novel. The film overlooks this through an overall lack of explanation, resulting in the overall theme of absurdity being collectively, less meaningful. By blatantly introducing absurdity, and attempting to understand the lack of reason, the novel provides a deeper understanding of the theme of absurdity than the film. Furthermore, the novel's narration of events allows greater flow of information, with the film's restrictive media preventing specifics that further the theme of absurdity from being disclosed. In Stephen Berry's book House of Abraham: Lincoln and the Todds, a Family Divided By War, Berry tells about the life of Abraham and his wife Mary Todd. In this book, he includes the influence that the Todd family had played on his personal life as well as his presidency. This book begins with Mary Todd's grandfather and eventually he ends with Lincoln's assassination. The main focus of the author is to give the reader a better understanding of the Todd clan, and also to understand what it was like to be apart of the family. The content of the book allows for people to go into the mind of the Todd family. After reading this book, it is easy to see why Abraham had such a difficult time with the Civil War not just because he was president, but also because his wife's family was split by it. There are many theories that have come up over the years on how the Todd's influenced Abraham Lincoln and the decisions he made during the civil war. In the book, he argues that the Todd clan, even though they all do not have the same mother, is closer than most families during the time because of the closeness they had. The author writes, "They loved and hated one another at the same time. They hugged or they throttled one another, depending on the emotional needs of the moment." (p.12) Because of ... Wall Steet Movie Review The definition of business ethics is described as a company's attitude and conduct towards its stakeholders – employees, customers, stockholders, and so forth; ethical behavior requires fair and honest treatment of all parties. The word ethics is defined as "standards of conduct or moral behavior." The movie Wall Street, was the exact opposite of these definitions. The movie shows examples of hostile takeovers, insider trading, greed and unethical behaviors in the attempt to build fortune on the all mighty dollar. The movie focuses on the stock market and the way inside information is used to make decisions to build cash and profits at the costs of others. People are investing money in hopes of turning profits but just as it is uncertain losses are also realized. But the more risk you are willing to take, the higher the reward or pay out can be in the end. This does not only apply to money but to your actions. In the movie Buddy Fox and Gordon Gekko were willing to risk fines and jail time in order to gain information to make their returns on investment close to certain. This movie also taught the lesson that you should always know what you are doing with your money and if you do your research and homework, you will know what you're investing in and it can bring higher success. You should never jump into an investment without knowing what you're actually getting into. You should know what you're investing, the beta tied to the investment and the reward you are looking to gain. Researching and finding these answers can definitely lead to smarter investments. Jumping into investments blind and uneducated can lead to loses in money. Wall Street had a high focus on stocks and bonds. It had some obvious correlations to business finance as well as subtle lessons. Douglas Mawson Contributions I believe that Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity while contributing to science, he suffered in many ways, including losing his friends and his sled dogs, he also had a lack of food and energy, and lastly he had his soles of his feet were actually beginning to fall off. The seasoned explorer, Douglas Mawson had suffered a lot through his race; he contributed to science, yet still was able to survive. Henrietta Lacks had her cells taken for scientific purposes without permission from her family. Phineas Gage survived an extreme dynamite accident which resulted in him having a hole in his head made by an iron rod. Although you can make a good argument on who endured the most adversity while contributing to science, Douglas Mawson did suffer a lot; and there are many ways to support it. Mawson suffered in tons of ways while he was in the race. The first way he suffered is that he lost his two close friends and his sled dogs which caused him to grieve, this slowed him down in the race. In the article it states "at 2 a.m. on January 8, Mertz died in his sleep." "Mawson buried his friend, still in the sleeping bag, beneath a mound of snow blocks at atop." While he was busy grieving, it slowed him down a lot and distracted him from the race. The second way he suffered is from lack of food. Synthesis Essay Synthesis Essay – General Douglas MacArthur MSgt Court Sartain Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR Often times when people talk about General Douglas MacArthur, they tend to think of a great military leader of the World War Two (WWII) or the Korean War. General MacArthur once said, "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent." General Douglas MacArthur, also known as Mac, was a Visionary Leader that not only shaped the outcome of the Korean War but Japan as well. However, he was not the most Ethical Leader to serve in the United States Military, which led to him being relieved of duty by President Truman in 1951. In this paper we will review not just how he was a visionary but at times unethical and how I relate those leadership traits to my own. VISIONARY LEADERSHIP General MacArthur was truly a visionary leader. He had the ability to see what needed to be done and set plans for accomplishing it. One week after the start of the Korean War General MacArthur had his Chief of Staff start considering an amphibious assault to take out communication in Seoul ("Concepts:," n.d.). • 62. The Human Side Of Enterprise Douglas McGregor was an American professor and psychologist who is most famous for his book, The Human Side of Enterprise, published in 1960. In this work, he conceives and examines two theories of behaviors in the workplace. They are known as Theory X and Theory Y. These distinct theories describe how individuals generally behave at work and how different types of managers might govern their employees. They have been used over the years to help managers to understand their employees' needs, behavior and how to better manage their staff. These theories can be analyzed and broken down into three of many sub–topics: Motivation, Leadership Style and Conflict Resolution. The two basic labels that McGregor created describe the assumptions that managers might make about their employees' views on motivation and behavior. According to McGregor's (1960) Theory X, "the average man is by nature indolent" and is typically self–centered and lacks ambition (p. 2). In this situation, managers are forced to act in an authoritarian manner. They must coerce their employees to do their jobs, because the assumption is that workers take little to no initiative. Theory X demonstrates that workers view money and job security as their primary motivator. Conversely, Theory Y states that people actually enjoy working and will actively seek out greater responsibility. Managers in this scenario would encourage and emphasize the empowerment of their employees and would provide a surplus of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Douglas Adams's novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect traverse an imperfect galaxy plagued by a lack of individuality. In The Seven Deadly Sins Today, Henry Fairlie ventures that this galactic epidemic correlates to the transmission of immorality throughout the world. Douglas Adams utilizes satire and characterization to demonstrate how the human condition is flawed. Furthermore, Henry Fairlie calls upon the archetypal seven deadly sins to criticize human banality. Collectively, Adams's wittiness and Fairlie's bitterness encourage the reader to exercise one's identity. First, Douglas Adams satirizes modern society to delineate the blemishes that chafe the face of humankind. Next, characterization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially, Adams conveys that people are too worried about their financial status and forget to enjoy life to its fullest. Money becomes a shackle and enslaves the people of planet Earth with one of the seven deadly sins: greed. The internet dictionary of Princeton University defines greed as "excessive desire to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves" ( ). Henry Fairlie agrees with this definition and offers an eloquent sentiment: "The be–all and end–all of life should not be to get rich, but to enrich the world" (26). However, Fairlie's plea is unheard due to the deafening materialism of modern society. It is a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless, that those who want "to enrich" are less abundant than those who want "to get rich." This phenomenon occurs because wealth is more easily attainable than enrichment. Wealth requires one lucky day at the New York Stock Exchange or the acquisition of an emerging franchise. Enrichment requires an acute mind and patience because social change often takes generations to root in the minds of people. The solution to both Adams' and Fairlie's sinful society rests in patience. People should not try to perform a lifetime of actions in a fraction of their lifetime. Adams then reveals the twisted prototype for the space–age hero through the character traits of Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect. Arthur was born and raised on Earth, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Douglas Mawson, 'Into The Unknown :Into The Unknown' Unit 1 ELA Essay Imagine if you were in the arctic with two other people and both of your travelling mates died; you were all alone, and you were many miles away what would you do? This is the story of Douglas Mawson. Douglas Mawson went on a painful journey to the Antarctic("Into the Unknown"). There is yet still two other people that faced adversity and contributed to science. Phineas Gage had the least amount adversity in the course of contributing to science, he was working one day and a metal pole blasted through his head and he lived for eleven years after that. Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity in the course of contributing to science for a few reasons. Douglas Mawson had travelling mates die on him, as seen in the article "Into the Unknown". To begin, Ninnis died. Ninnis was walking along and took a different path and he fell into a crevasse and Mertz and Mawson never found him. Ninnis had all of the valuable gear and most of the food, this meant that they had to live on very little food. In addition, to Ninnis dying his other travelling friend Mertz died. Mertz died in his sleep, and Mawson was unsure how he died in his sleep. The article reveals, "Many years later some researchers speculated that Mertz's debilitation was caused by poisonous overdoses of vitamin A from the huskies liver", ... • 75. Comparing The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy By Douglas... One of the most fundamental philosophical problems to be solved is the question: what is the meaning of life? According to Albert Camus, a French existentialist writer and philosopher, a one's urge to find the ultimate answer for the question is rather absurd. He believed that people search for the meaning of anything is vain because a source of meaning as such is non–existent. In addition to that, Camus' literary works are often associated to the idea of absurdism and that is the thing he and Douglas Adams have in common. Therefore, the main focus of my essay is absurdity, as it is the main theme in the work of Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But why has Adams chosen it to be one of The Hitchhiker's leading topics? Of course, one can argue that there cannot be a proper sci–fi novel without a certain level of absurdity included. Douglas Adams appears to agree with the idea but at the same time he seems to believe in "everything in moderation" kind of approach. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking into account the author's intentions, after a detailed analysis I incline to the hypothesis that Adams used the absurd as a means of expression of deeper human emotions such as anxiety, discontent or despair. Personally, I can understand his intentions, as it is very likely that no reader would like a pessimistic story dealing with topics so complex and depressing, and that is why the absurd is in ... Douglas Adams address this very question in his science– fiction novel "Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy". A story about a human named Author who, after witnessing the destruction of Earth, hitchhikes several rides throughout the Universe. Discovering new worlds and conversing with several alien species with his longtime friend Ford, who Author recently discovered was also an alien.
