2. Logo: The BBC logo in the top left hand
corner of the magazine reflects upon
the famous TV programme. This could
help attain a larger audience.
Masthead: The masthead of this music
magazine is ‘top of the pops’ which is
written in an extremely girly, bubbly font,
with the ‘S’ of the ‘pops’ exaggerated
and uses swirls which relates with girls
a lot. This suggests that the target
audience is quite young (12-16). Also
the masthead is in white which stands
out against the orange background. It is
also really bright which ensures the
reader will notice if from afar.
Main image: The main image of One
Direction which suggests the magazine
is aimed at a pop music genre. The
image is large and placed towards the
right hand side of the page creating a
focal point for the readers. One
Direction are smiling and uses direct
eye contact which makes the reader feel
invited and more personal. This also
connotes happiness which will make the
reader want to buy this magazine.
Colour: The main colours used are
white, orange and yellow these colours
work well together and do not clash.
These colours are bright to stand out
and will easily catch many readers.
Also they are girly colours indicating
why it is a girly magazine to attract
girls even more.
Barcode/Price/Issue date: Informs the reader about the costing and
information of the magazine. The price is £3.99 which is quite expensive and
suggests it is aimed at a young audience who still get their working parents to
buy the magazine for them.
Subsidiary images: All the smaller images
are of teen-celebs or artists related to pop.
This suggests that ‘top of the pops’ is a pop
magazine. By using lots of imagery on the
page suggests that the target audience is
quite young, as young people like to see a lot
of visual images to stay entertained. Also
these images are useful as if a monthly
buyer of this magazine does not like the main
image on it that month they might like the
subsidiary images and still be interested into
buying this magazine.
Main cover line: The main cover line is in
white and orange which shows importance as
the main cover line and masthead are the
only text in these colours. Interesting from my
research of looking at other top of the pops
magazine all mastheads and main cover lines
are all in these colours to make this
magazine more recognizable to their
audience. Also it is written in a big bold front
connoting that it is important and something
that the readers should not miss and adding
the exclamation mark at the end connotes
that the writer it shouting this at you to make
sure you don't miss it and read it.
Mode of address: The mode of address is very informal and colloquial. The
language used is very cheesy for example ‘find you perfect bikini’ which
suggests it is aimed at a younger audience to keep them entertained by talking
about their interests.
Header: The header contains a small
image of a ‘dog’, this will immediately
make the reader get hooked and
entertained as they would want to find
out more about this. The header is blue
against the white background to make
the header stand out more and as yellow
connotes happiness it is indicating for the
reader to stop and read what is on this
header as it will make them happy.
