Q2
1.
2. Stereotyping on the Front Cover
Stereotypical colours: The heavy use of pink and purple
connotes femininity that appeals to the 85% female target
audience.
Range of coverlines: This is stereotypical for a pop
magazine, as it captures the young audiences attention.
Smaller pictures and headings help to attract different
people to different parts of the cover.
Left Third: Most of the main coverlines have been placed
on the left third of a magazine so it stands out to the
audience straight away when on a shops shelf.
Mid Shot: The main image is a mid shot. This is
stereotypical for a pop magazine because it allows the
audience to see what the artists are wearing and also
clearly covers most of the front page.
Language: The language choices of words such as “celeb”
and “2” instead of “to” is stereotypical for the young
audience and appeals to young people because they
understand the intended meaning of it, which you would
not find in a rock magazine.
3. Stereotyping on the Contents Page
Bright Colours: Similarly to the front cover, the heavy
use of pink and purple connotes femininity and
excitement that would appeal to young girls. The
smaller use of blue and green helps to move away from
just stereotypically female colours and act as
neutralisers.
Contents columns: This is stereotypical for a pop
magazine because it is easy for a young audience to
understand and quickly work from.
Front Cover photo: The use of a smaller picture of the
front cover is stereotypical for pop magazines because
main stories that have been featured on the cover, can
easily be navigated to with page numbers on the
contents page.
Subscription box: The inclusion of a subscription box
at the bottom of the page is stereotypical because it is
an easy way for the magazine to achieve repeat
business and it makes it easier for the audience to
ensure they never miss an issue of the magazine.
4. Stereotyping on the DPS
Large Picture: It is stereotypical in a
pop magazine for the bands images to
take up a whole page because it breaks
up the amount of text the young
audience members have to read.
Question and answer format: This is
stereotypical because it is easy for the
audience to follow and it is interesting
for the reader to find out about what
the band members are actually
thinking about on certain issues e.g.
going on tour.
Stand first: This is stereotypical
because it summarises for the audience
what the article will cover and grips
their attention to carry on reading.
Bright Colours: This is stereotypical because it follows
on from the theme of the front cover and contents
page. Bright colours also help to highlight certain bits
of information e.g. different band members names.
