Black Power And The Civil Rights Movement
How accurate is it to say that the growth of Black Power was the most important factor in the
weakening of the civil rights movement in the 1960s? Black power is a political slogan that was
aimed to promote the ideas of the black racial group. There have been mixed views on weather it
weakened the civil rights movement or strengthened it, this involved many factors. Some of the
thing's that weakened the movement was the use violence, organisation and leadership and the
CORE ideas and the message of the black power. However some people disagreed that Black Power
weakened the movement as other factors like the Impact of the Vietnam War and the failure of
Kings campaigns for the reasons like the difference between the north and south. One of the main
reasons that the Civil Rights movement was weakened was because of the use of violence from the
Black Power in order to get their message across. This was a contrast to other movements like the
National Association for the advancement of coloured people otherwise known as the NAACP as
other groups used peaceful tactics Unlike the Black Power who thought peaceful tactics weren't
effective and wouldn't get them anywhere. The Black Panthers had a radical agenda that didn't want
to work with the American Government they wanted a revolution not a slow change that was what
was being offered to them. Many people were against the Black Power for the these reason as they
contradicted themselves as they did everything that was previously

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Congressman John Lewis Essay
There is little debate among historians that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Congressman John
Lewis are arguably two of the most important men in the Civil Rights Movement. Both of these
men, Dr. Martin Luther King, in context of his involvement with the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, and John Lewis, in context of his involvement with the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee, left indelible impacts on the trajectory and success of the civil rights
movement writ–large. While it is important to recognize the collective achievement of each of these
men and the organizations in which they served, it is also important to recognize the reality that both
of these men occupied distinct political positions within the movement which ultimately changed
the ways in which they both would foresee the actions that they thought would be important and
essential to the success of the movement.
Politics, while more often observed in context of institutional power structures like governmental
systems, i.e the federal government of the United States, is an important and fundamental feature of
transgressive social movements as well. In the Civil Rights Movement, the fundamental differences
in political ideology and direct action are best highlighted between King and Lewis in context of the
each of the initial speeches that both of these men intended to give to attendees of the 1963 March
on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Hence, this essay will provide a comparative analysis of

why are we so bitter and judgmental! Race–centered conflicts in several U.S. cities have led to the
strongest calls for policy reforms since the turbulent civil rights era of the 1960s. Propelled largely
by videos of violent police confrontations with African–Americans, protesters have taken to the
streets in Chicago, New York and other cities demanding changes in police tactics. From
Philadelphia and New York to Kansas City and Los Angeles, joblessness, poor schools, crime,
blight, high incarceration rates and segregated housing patterns have helped drive millions of
Americans – many of them minorities – into poverty. In some localities, up to a third of the residents
subsist below the federal poverty line. Many experts say economic growth is essential to combat
urban poverty. More than 50 years after the official end of segregation and efforts by the Rev.

Rhonda Williams Black Power
Civil rights or black power, which of the two approaches was the dominant one in the twentieth–
century African American struggle for racial and social equality? For Rhonda Williams the answer
is, without a doubt, the latter one. In her book Concrete Demands, she argues that black power and
not civil rights strategies were the dominant force in twentieth–century African American activism.
That said, it is important to note that Williams differentiates between "black power" and "Black
Power." While the latter one stands for a specific historical period of ideologically informed
activism that left an indelible mark on African American politics and culture, the first one, black
power with small letters has been central to African American political ... Show more content on

First of all, she suggests that the term black power emerged out of a broader attempt of African
American empowerment and consequently characterizes a broad and timeless objective. Different
from civil rights activism, which was based on a broad interracial coalition, the politics of black
empowerment, while not generally opposed to coalitions with Whites, promoted political and social
activism independent from Whites. Black Power paid more attention to the allocation of power and
aims to end African Americans dependence on Whites' changing goodwill. Black Power with big B
and big P represents the specific historical period during which African American activists
developed and practiced "oppositional ideologies and politics." Their activism was
"unapologetically" Black, informed by ideas of Black consciousness and pride that emphasized self–
determination and racial autonomy. The following is a summary of the structure and the context of
the book: Concrete Demands is divided into two main sections. The first one illustrates the
ideological roots and practical routes that informed the Black Power movement of the 1960s. The
book's first two chapters narrate the historical context of the different forms and ideas of black
empowerment starting in 1917. In discussing the various progenitors of the Black Power activists,
Williams portrays the multifaceted ideological and practical traditions, as well as the international
foundations of early black power activism. The third chapter concentrates on the years 1963–66, a
pivotal period in the African American liberation struggle during which Whites' continuing
resistance to Blacks' long overdue participation in the political realm led many activists to take
alternative routes to achieve lasting Black empowerment. The second part of the book is devoted to
the specific historical period–the Black Power era. Chapter four

Pro And Cons Of Malcolm X
– [ ] Malcolm X ideology as well as his viewpoints have always differed from the viewpoint of
majority of people and as well as the more "acceptable" way of thinking in society.
– [ ] The focus of this speech will be to look in to the pros and cons of X and as well to have a better
overview of his thought process. We will examine some of the many doctrines of Malcolm X–
which where his "common enemy" theory, idea of can one go against their own race for the greater
good of another race. We will as look in to the party that he played in the Black Panther Party .In the
end we look at both sides of his argument in the best way possible.
– [ ] Malcolm's influences and impact is still very much here today and still affects how some parts
of society works and we can see that with the different viewpoints on politics to the social issues
and the subject that many are still fighting for and trying to find a solution to best fit all people.
– [x] Malcolm X believed in the theory of a "common enemy" . He deeply believed that in our
world regardless of what your race may be whether it was black , Asian , Indian, and whatever else
that may fall in between or outside of those, that they all had an common enemy: which was the
white man. And that where ever the white man went that turmoil, greed, corruption followed;
– [x] "And what we have foremost in common is that enemy– the white man"( Malcolm X Speaks,
messages to the Grassroots, Page .5 paragraph 1).
– [ ] Malcolm X believed that if all the other races came together in unity, they could stop the
oppression of the white man and as well to bring awareness to the oppression that many face
– [ ] Some of the actions taken to achieve that goals was Malcolm X speaking against the struggling
that people of color and other races faced at the hand of the white man.
– [ ] The way that risks/obstacles involved was that their were a lot of people in his own race that
did not see eye to eye with Malcolm's viewpoints and so his life was put at risks because the topic
that he spoke of was dangerous and prohibited in society at that point.

Nonviolent Protests: March Sparknotes
Many decisions had to be made when approaching discrimination and segregation; many wanted
this to end. The debate on what was best to approach the dangers of fighting for what you believed
was weighed down to two options; violent protests or nonviolent protests. In the graphic novel titled
"March" written and experienced by John Lewis himself with designs by Nate Powell, depicts the
struggles of civil rights and the fight to earn it. The novel goes off to show mostly nonviolent
protests, but outside of the novel during the 1960's depicts and describes a different approach;

He ended up joining the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), also participating in
Freedom Rides and sit–ins which got him arrested. Stokely Carmichael one day would watch
television and see what was going on in the south. Sit–ins were in full action and motivated
Carmichael to head down to the south and contribute to the civil rights movement. Stokely
Carmichael was only a freshman when he participated in a freedom ride; he would continue to be
involved in freedom rides until the year 1964 when he discovered the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee. His first impact with the SNCC was raising the number of registered
black voters, more than white voters in Lowndes County. Stokely Carmichael grew frustrated with
the response to his registration efforts, "he decides to leave the SNCC and create his own party; The
Lowndes County Freedom Organization" (History.com, Staff/Authors Unknown). Stokely
Carmichael Looked up to Martin Luther King Jr's philosophy, but as a young civil rights leader and
being very frustrated with the current situations of the protests such as mobs attacking and
vandalizing property, he knew the tempo of the protests needed to be pushed more. Stokely
Carmichael would now present a self–defense approach to protests, he would coin the term "Black
Power" (History.com, Staff/Authors Unknown) a term that showed anger and frustration towards
racial discrimination. Black Power" also became a sign and staple for breaking the nonviolent
approach towards protesting. This was difficult on Martin Luther King's part since Stokely
Carmichael was an up and coming civil rights leader, but chose to be against the usual nonviolent
form of protesting. Stokely Carmichael wanted to being a little bit of fear when came down to his

A Comparison Of Malcolm X Vs. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Civil Rights movement in the 1960's birthed the most prominent figures in the battle against
racism in the United States. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. are immortalized as the men
who stood up and spoke out during the most crucial time in US History for African American
activism. Though often brought up in the same vein, the two had complete opposite ideology about
how to reach equality. Their influence created many prominent groups in the 60s against
mistreatment of African Americans, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC). According to the name of this group, they were a nonviolent team of young black activists
that stemmed from MLK's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Apparent in their
name, they shared the same peaceful approach as MLK, but over time and as the hardships of the
movement began to callous the young group they shifted towards the 'by–any–means–necessary'
approach of Malcolm X. Through the excerpts in "Takin it to the Streets," one can see the stark
difference between Malcolm X's more aggressive approach, MLK's loving approach, and the SNCC
shifting its views over time but always maintaining a steadfast commitment to the cause and a
youthful bravado. Martin Luther King Jr. is a household name. He became a martyr, known for
exclusively preaching about love and dreams of equality. MLK was impassioned and eloquent and
palatable enough for white people. He never wavered from the idea that the resolution to

How Did Historians Contribute To The Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Movement is often thought to begin with a tired Rosa Parks defiantly declining to
give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She paid the price by going to jail. Her refusal
sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which civil rights historians have in the past credited with
beginning the modern civil rights movement. Others credit the Supreme Court's landmark decision
in Brown v. Board of Education with beginning the movement. Regardless of the event used as the
starting point of the moment, everyone can agree that it is an important period in history. In the
forty–five years since the modern civil rights movement, several historians have made significant
contributions to the study of this era. These historians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whites were afraid to be labeled as racially moderate, and typically had to join the side of white
supremacy for many reasons, among them the fact that class had previously aligned African–
Americans and poorer whites in a fight against poverty, Brown elevated racial status above class.
Also, the decision made those in power in the South exert their disproportionate political power to
keep the state government in their hands. Finally, some Southerners who normally would not care
about race were swayed by the fact that the federal government was trying to impose a decision in
education–an arena typically reserved for state government. This made the fight one of states' rights
versus federal decree. Klarman's argument claims that this mobilization of white resistance in the
South led to increased tension and violence against African–Americans. For example, the bitter
protests in Birmingham and Selma, along with the violence in the Black Belt areas of Lowndes
County, where police dogs, fire hoses and lynching were used came as a result of this massive
resistance movement. This violence, when media attention was paid to it, "converted northern
whites to the civil rights cause by exposing the true evils of the Jim Crow system." Civil rights
leaders, such as Martin Luther King, played on that knowledge and specifically targeted cities where
the most powerful backlash would occur, gaining them media air time and allowing the Northerners

Comparing The Philosophies Of Dr King And Malcolm X
During the civil rights movement, the people (African American) and theirs leaders use different
methods or approaches to achieve their goal, but I will focus on DR Martin Luther King JR and
Malcolm X philosophies towards the "role of violence". DR King and Malcolm X are two black
men living in America when black people are treated and considered inferior human race. They are
actually second class citizens in their own country. Although Dr King and Malcolm X goals are the
same, but their method or approach towards achieving it are drastically different. Dr King believed
that to work against injustice, one must develop a nonviolent frame of mind to achieve that because
differences cannot be settled through violence. I think that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Black is Beautiful. Black power movement believed that black folks have run out of patience seeing
their people dehumanized as if they are common animals that worth nothing on earth. They believed
that it is time for blacks' to take control of their selves instead of been brainwashed and polluted by
white folks. In 1968 Kwame Ture define Black Power as " the ability of black people to political get
together and organize themselves so that they can speak form a position of strength rather a position
of weakness"(Lander 1967,p.8). Now looking at this definition, I can say that their philosophy is to
liberate black people from white colony and instilling Black people mind that Black is beautiful and
gorgeous in every aspect of life. Black power movement did not believe that blacks should totally
assimilate into white folks because that means that their history is worth not preserving. This leads
me back to what I believed is their philosophy (liberating Blacks form white colony). The Black
power movement also accepted Malcolm X philosophy towards violence than Dr King's view
towards violence. They believed that Dr King view of nonviolence tactics is not a viable option for
blacks' libration, in fact integration is as good as surrendering to white supremacy. Their believe is
that blacks should be a force of their own and they are ready to take their rights in a violent way if
consistently denied the most basic of human rights. In all sense, they are

Goals and Strategies of the Civil Rights Movement Essay
African–American Civil Rights Movement Throughout the 1960's, the widespread movement for
African American civil rights had transformed in terms of its goals and strategies. The campaign had
intensified in this decade, characterized by greater demands and more aggressive efforts. Although
the support of the Civil Rights movement was relatively constant, the goals of the movement
became more high–reaching and specific, and its strategies became less compromising. African
Americans' struggle for equality during the 1960's was a relentless movement that used change for
progress. In essence, the transformation of the Civil Rights Movement throughout the 1960's
forwarded the evolution of America into a nation of civil equality and freedom. ... Show more

We want to see the cooperative concept applied in business and banking. We want..." The excerpt
reads further as a long dissertation of specific goals of the organization, which include black
participation in government and economy, defiance against profiteers of slums, and the overall shift
to a socialist America. In the socialist train of thought, society is invested in the integrity and
economic participation of its people, and, therefore, blacks become almost invaluable to America.
Here, each individual is seen as vital to the nation, because, if not, then the whole foundation of the
socialist philosophy collapses. And so, it is implied in this document that a change for a new system
of government in a new America is needed, which greatly contrasts from simply making people
aware of a perfect world with guaranteed civil rights. Another significant transformation took place
in the Civil Rights Movement in terms of its strategies. In analyzing this facet of the movement, we
notice a great shift from nonviolent demonstration to forward, forceful action. Specifically, at the
start of the Civil Rights Movement, lunch counter sit–ins were evident throughout the nation, as
were Freedom Riders. Starting in Greensboro, North Carolina at a luncheonette called Woolworths,

Amy Carmichael was born in Millisle, Ireland, on December 16, 1867, to parents David and
Catherine Carmichael.
As a young woman, she felt sorry for the factory girls in her town and, with several friends' support,
started a church for them. This work progressed as almost four hundred women and girls attended
her daily meetings, but she knew her calling was even bigger than this.
In 1891, she started the process to become a missionary to China at the age of twenty–four, but was
turned back to due to poor health. Amy finally decided to go to Japan, but met with many
difficulties, as she found the language impossible, the missionary community at odds, and then

Nobody wanted a group of caste–breaking, Christian women sheltering runaway girls as their

From there, her work only got bigger. More and more girls from all over India showed up at her
door, and multiple assistants were needed to care for them. As other missionaries visited Amy and
her work, she gave them a bright welcome––and a job to do! She continued to need sleeping,
schooling and cooking spaces and educating the girls was a challenge. Still, some of them were old
enough to help, and with a few close friends, she pulled it together.
In 1932, Amy was severely injured in a fall. At first it simply appeared to be a badly broken leg, but
as her leg healed, other problems showed up, and she was finally confined to bed as her back had
been hurt and didn't heal. Despite being bedridden, she wrote many encouraging books and
ministered to hundreds of people from her bed.

Stokely Carmichael : Man Of The Hour Essay
Stokely Carmichael: Man of the Hour Stokely Carmichael, the man who coined the term black
power, once said, "And we 're never going to get caught up in questions about power. This country
knows what power is. It knows it very well. And it knows what Black Power is cause it deprived
black people of it for 400 years." Carmichael fought endlessly for civil rights for African American
people because he felt that they were not being seen and treated as human beings, as they were
continuously being denied basic rights. Stokely Carmichael is a dynamic man, who was a
frontrunner in the Civil Rights Movement and an inspiring trailblazer that took action everywhere
he saw an opportunity.
Stokely Carmichael was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad in June 29,1941. He moved with his family

well liked and popular among his classmates. In 1960, Carmichael attended the historically black

was not sentimental at all in their love, but the children knew exactly what was right. In their eyes,
right was right, and wrong was wrong. They knew that their parent's word was law. They also knew
that if they did not follow that law, they would get some kind of punishment. Most of the time it
would be one of these five: standing in the corner, forbidden to go play, slapped, pandied, which is

held in strict compliance to rules, they were a highly religious family. Every night everyone in the
family had to attend devotions. They went to church on Sundays and Wednesdays. It was very
obvious that Amy knew that Jesus answers prayer because at the age of three years old she learned a

method; he wanted the media to capture violence from the white towards the blacks so people out of

encouraged African Americans to take control politically and economically by replying with their

To What Extent Has the Importance of Martin Luther King...
How far has the importance of Martin Luther King been exaggerated? The significance of Martin
Luther King's role during the Civil Rights Movement in the USA has become a matter for debate. In
this essay I will examine the importance of his role along with many other factors. Shortly after
King graduated with a Doctorates in Theology at the University of Boston, he was instantly
involved in the attempts to improve black peoples rights in predominantly the South of America.
King was the harbinger of Civil rights and 'hit the ground running' with his policies and ways of
protests. His non violent strategies – inspired by Ghandi – were the source of his actions and they
proved to be very popular. One of his most notable successes was the ... Show more content on

A further legislation put in to place was in 1957. The Civil Rights Act addressed the situation of
voting rights, where only 20% of Black Americans had passed the test in order to vote. Congress
passed the act to ensure all Americans could vote and forbade any person from interfering with
anyones right to vote, in actuality little was done to enforce the Act, and the situation remained.
Though, 3 years later, the Act was amended by requiring local authorities to keep thorough voting
records. However, records showed that the acts only increased the number of votes by a dreary 3%.
Another legislation put forward was in 1960 when Kennedy won the election, he put forward a
controversial notion of a Civil Rights Act; he had showed support in previous years when he
supported the Freedom Riders in 1961. But President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 so he could
not pass the Act until his successor; Vice President Lyndon Johnson approved the Bill in July next
year. The Act marked a defining moment in the struggle for Civil Rights; it outlawed segregation in
all areas. In Source A we can see the combined partnership of Johnson and Kennedy, they offered a
mixed bag of experience and charisma, which gave a great deal of diversity to American politics,
who in the past rarely did anything to do with Civil rights; their policies gained millions of votes
from anti–discriminates. An additional Act

Black Power Movement
The movement formally arrived in Jackson, Mississippi, at the capitol, but grew out of six years of
cumulative anger on the part of members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC). The Black Power Movement also known as the 1970's Revolution was an attempt by
people with varied interests to make plain the issues which the leaders of the day failed to address. It
all started in October of 1968 when hundreds of university students and supporters led by the
National Joint Action Commission (NJAC). Malcolm X, 'Black Muslim ' group, Black Panthers.

But the solutions that some Black Power leaders advocated seemed only to create new problems.
But the Movement was not only about taking over the government, it was about changing the
society of Trinidad and Tobago and it was a process which identified the need for education of the
people, recognising that we had been subjected to a colonial education system and we needed to be
able to look at ourselves and our country and our future from a different perspective. Other groups
affected by racism developed similar movements. By the mid–1970s, the Black Power movement
was for all intents and purposes over. There were arrests, and harassment of many of the
movement's members, gets much of the credit for the decline of the Black Power movement.
Conclusion
In conclusion, The Black Power Movement was an attempt to address plain issues that the leaders
did not address and it gave people the ability to vote, Integration, affirmative action and equal rights
in the work place. It instilled a sense of racial pride and self– esteem in 'blacks' and how to fight for

The African American Struggle for Civil Rights in the 1960's
In what ways, and for what reasons, did the African American struggle for civil rights in the United
States change between the early and late 1960s?
The civil rights movement was an influential movement that has been taking place in America for
many years. Victories during this time helped to raise hope for African Americans during this
influential movement. In the beginning of the movement there was a focus on nonviolence, and the
non–violent techniques began to pay off in the early 1960s. As the time progressed the struggle for
African Americans during the civil rights in the United States. Towards the ending of the period
hope was lost when major civil rights activists were assassinated. In the early 1960s non–violent
techniques began to pay off with sit–ins, marches and other forms of protest. For example, on May
4th, 1961, 13 young activists traveled through the south known as the freedom rides. This was
nonviolent, and this was effective. Also, four African American students in North Carolina started a
Sit–In in a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter. The students were not served and workers refused
to serves them. The students stayed at the counter because they were allowed to stay there, but were
refused service. Many others in the south protested in similar ways, and 6 months later they were
finally served in the diner. These non–violent sit–in were effective during this period. Nonviolence
became less effective and groups like the Black Panther Party came

Persuasive Essay On Black Lives Matter
Three years after BLM launched a nationwide uprising against police violence, what's next for the
movement? In this special section, a leading African American historian explores how the group is
forging a powerful new form of civil rights activism. Plus: How police in 1970s Detroit unleashed
an undercover execution squad, and the modern–day rise of "warrior policing." EVEN IN THE
SPLINTERED AND OFTEN FRACTIOUS world of social justice movements, Black Lives Matter
doesn't fit easily into existing categories. Few grassroots uprisings have done as much, in such a
short period of time, to focus attention on long–neglected issues of racial justice, gender, and
economic inequality. Yet so far, BLM has not followed up on its initial victories by building the kind
of lasting, hierarchical organizations that grew out of the civil rights movement; nor has it dedicated
itself to a single, easily identifiable goal, like enacting the Voting Rights Act. How are we to make
sense of organizers who themselves remain so loosely organized? And if Black Lives Matter isn't
devoting itself primarily to bringing about substantive legal and legislative change, then how can it
hope to transform its resistance into lasting and meaningful gains in human rights? Such questions
are understandable, given the course that BLM activists are charting for their organization. But
comparing the group to the civil rights movement betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of both
its importance and its broader

Pro And Cons Of Malcolm X
Introduction
A. Malcolm X ideology as well as his viewpoints have always differed from the viewpoint of the
majority of people and as well as the more "acceptable" way of thinking in society.
B. The focus of this speech will be to look into the pros and cons of X and as well to have a better
overview of his thought process. We will examine some of the many doctrines of Malcolm X–
which were his "common enemy" theory, idea of can one go against their own race for the greater
good of another race. We will as look into the party that he played in the Black Panther Party .In the
end, we look at both sides of his argument in the best way possible.
C. Malcolm's influences and impact is still very much here today and still affects how some parts of
society works and we can see that with the different viewpoints on politics to the social issues and
the subject that many are still fighting for and trying to find a solution to best fit all people.

Stokely Carmichael Kwame Toure, better known as Stokely Carmichael, was one of the most
prominent civil rights figures in our history. Born in Trinidad, he became a citizen at the age of 13.
Stokely and his family moved to an Italian and Jewish neighborhood where he was one of the few
African Americans. He attended one of the most prestigious high schools, Bronx High School of
Science where he remained one of the few faces of color among his white elite counterparts.
Carmichael became very popular around his classmates, attending parties, dating white women, and
playing sports. While Stokely was aware of the racial tensions that ensued, he never realized until
later in life how differently he was perceived from his white counterparts. One evening upon
graduating high school, Stokely finally felt his calling to join the movement. Carmichael was
watching a television newscast that showed young African Americans protesting the racial
injustices. "When I first heard about the Negroes sitting in at lunch counters I thought they were a
bunch of publicity hounds." He watched as these people were knocked off stools, ketchup thrown in
their hair, and sugar thrown in their eyes. After this he decided to join the Congress of Racial

Courage to Dissent helps readers understanding of the Civil Rights movement. Brown–Nagin wrote
about the issue that was going on during this time when it pertains to politics, housing, public
accommodations, and schools. It highlighted major issue that was a problem in America but
especially Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta at this time became a huge stomping ground for African
American leaders because of the massive wave of blacks that lived in the city as well as the issue
that needed to be address to end segregation. The NAACP began to expand their leadership into
smaller components. A lot of local black officials became extremely involved in Atlanta. The city
wanted faster results, which focus on local activist and not head officials of the NAACP. One leader
that was mention a lot in the book was A.T Walden. A.T Walden was the first black attorney in the
state of Georgia. One of Walden accomplishments was the civil rights cases to help the pay for black

to view conformity and assimilation as a panacea for racism, discrimination, and oppression. It

Black Power, the idea of "...African Americans controlling the social, political, and economic
institutions in their community,"3 coined by Stokely Carmichael, harvested the support of blacks
across America as they saw that "integration is the illusion of inclusion."4 The idea of "Black
Power" was meant "...to start bringing black people together under a slogan that everyone
understood."5 "Students began to challenge the meaning and purpose of education and forced
colleges and universities to reexamine their role and function in American Society... (They)

The birth of first department for Africana Studies took place on the campus of San Francisco State

In motorcross it's all about the bike you ride. With so many manufacturers it's hard to decide which
bike you want. Each manufacturer has different tools to persuade people to buy their newest greatest
bike. Between commercials, free giveaways, meet and greets, and short videos posted online, they
have a good chance of winning some buyers. Personally the biggest advertisement that grabbed my
eye as a young teenager was the posters sold. As a thirteen year old American teenager, I wanted to
cover the walls in my room with my favorite bands, zombies, and motorcycles. So I would always
buy these posters of a professional rider standing next to the newest bike, or them jumping a new
bike across an enormous jump.
Seeing all of these posters on my wall made me want a new bike. It made me want to be like the pro
riders that were on those posters. These were the people I looked up to growing up as a kid. This is
just one of the many tools used by dirt bike manufacturers to sell their products. I am going to focus
on a specific poster made by Suzuki with a picture of Ricky Carmichael 'The winningest motocross

story follows her life from a fourteen year old in 1882 to her death in 1951, and all her adventures in
between. Amy was a wealthy Irish girl who became a missionary to India in 1896, adapting to the
culture of the Indian people and saving young girls from forced prostitution. She eventually adopted
several of these young girls, and started an orphanage where she saved hundreds of children. She

criticism he received from his opponents of timely protest. We gain a lot of insight about King's

With stagnation there would be no awareness to a social issue. Looking further into King's letter,
another crucial point that he brought up is that without significant activism the oppressing party
would never give up what they wanted them to. Also, to make the problem politically present they
had to present the problem in a way in which everybody would see the growing tensions in the
community. This is later talked about in King's "direct–action program" with him creating an issue
that makes for a political change. He felt that the direct–action would create direct changes to the
current problem. A crucial point that really brought me to an emotional thought is when King
mentioned his daughter crying. The mention of his daughter and her not being able to go to theme
parks was an upsetting moment. This point brought up a relatable perspective that added a unique
thought to his argument. In summary King makes some very relatable points that when looking back
now make's us see how he really helped move the civil rights movement along and cause real
change for black communities.
Looking at the outside article of "Black Panther Party: 1966–1982" by Michael X. Delli Carpini we
see that the Black Panther Party did not share the same exact ideals as Dr. King. Although they did
advocate strongly for equal rights for black communities they did not have the same patience that
Martin Luther King had. The main points of the Black Panther Party movement

Many people had imperceptible answers to the questions like, what did it all mean in the end and
what were the accomplishments? Stokely Carmichael wrote a book called Black Power and in it he
wrote about how black people in that time did not accept segregation. Martin Luther King also made
important points in his speeches about segregation and how during this time black people decided to
make a change. The movement in the Alabama Black Belt lasted the longest and many people do
not acknowledge that fact. Even after all the protests started to fade away from the headlines, black
people in Alabama continued to protest for freedom. Many black citizens in Alabama began to
realize that there were other white people in Alabama who also wanted to end segregation. In
Lowndes County, Alabama, there was a rich man who owned thousands of acres of land, named
Harrell Hammonds. Hammonds was a probate judge who raised cattle and grew cotton on his farm.
Hammonds was also an aristocratic politician. Many people noticed Hammonds as being against
segregation. Hammonds argued in a court of law that everyone should be treated equally no matter
the color of their skin. Later in his life, Hammonds also gave his support for black people to be able
to get an equal education as white people.
There was an unhappy ending to Hammonds support to end segregation. Many people threatened

Argumentative Essay On Black Power
Through the mid 1900's, the black movement began in hopes of creating a better future around a
certain view that was based around social and political aspects. The Black Power movement came
about due to the fact that over the recent years, non–violent actions were not combatting racism and
advocators of this movement wanted to start seeing results. The main purpose of this was because
blacks had simple, humane requests to end racism and give everyone equal opportunity. After
researching there was a passage that fit perfectly into describing the overall view of the movement
and how there was a direct controversy.."The controversy over Black Power reflected and
perpetuated a split in the civil rights movement between organizations that maintained that
nonviolent methods were the only way to achieve civil rights goals and those organizations that had
become frustrated and were ready to adopt violence and black separatism". (). When looking at both
Stokely Carmichael and Dr. King's views there can be contrasts on both including some viewing
King's view as outdated with little change and Carmichael as turning their beliefs into a racially
integrated society that some did not agree with.
The black power movement was also known as black nationalism which in other words meant that
there was advocacy for the racial redefinition for African American citizens. The first person who
claimed the term, "black power" and used it in a social and racial term was Stokely Carmichael. It

Afro–Latino in New York City
Growing up in New York City is a very unique experience. You grow up surrounded by a diverse
population of people packed tightly into one city. But with this kind of diversity come the questions
of self–identification and how others view you. I was born and raised in the upper Manhattan
neighborhood of Washington Heights which is known for its mostly Dominican population.
Moreover, growing up in the public school system and everyday New York living has exposed me to
many different Latino and Black communities and culture. I have experienced racism; I have

This has always made me debate race because in the eyes of others race is skin color, hair, eyes.
Race is what people see and becomes less and less about what your background is. Living in New
York City you would think people would be more open–minded. Recently, I was walking into a
downtown nightclub with about four other Spanish females when we over hear a, I'm assuming,
White female telling the security we just walked passed "How dare you let in these minorities

there still exists an ignorant population.
Another link that I find interesting among the Afro–Latino communities of New York City is that
racially discriminated races are pushed into poverty. Philippe Bourgois writes about New York City
during the crack epidemic of the 1980s. He explains through cultural reproduction theory that
although it may seem that inner–city residents appeared to live in a community astray from the
mainstream ideals they actually held similar values such as the drive to achieve the "American

success through the refusal of being stepped on by the "white man." The form of upward mobility
that this culture seeks is usually achieved by

Essay on Nonviolence or Violence: Which Was More Effective?
The Civil Rights Movement brought many accomplishments to African Americans such as the 1964
Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The key issues that
African Americans fought for were voting rights, integration and racial equality. They were tired of
the discrimination and humiliation they received as a result of the segregation laws imposed on
them. "State laws mandated racial separation in schools, parks, playgrounds, restaurants, hotels,
public transportation, theaters, restrooms and so on" (Blumberg 40). Lawsuits had been tried to gain
rights such as the unsuccessful Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 and the successful Brown v. Board of

The strategy of violence was a divisive force in the Black community; many African American
protestors were indecisive in which way to fight for their rights.
Violence also proved to be unproductive because it only caused more resistance and chaos in time of
confrontation. Violent protests such as riots ended up damaging the Black Community. African
Americans resulted being the victims of these riots, and as a result the most affected by the violent
confrontations. Moreover, the use of violence created stiff race relations between the African
Americans and White. Demonstrating that the violence method was ineffective for the civil rights
movement is the fact that the "Black power movement faded almost as quickly as it appeared"
(Ware 161).
The nonviolence tactic was more effective than violence in the Civil Rights Movement because it
caused many throughout the nation to feel sympathy for the African American cause. Particularly,
many White people began to sympathize with African Americans. Many joined organizations, thus
supporting various forms of protesting including sit–ins, pray–ins, wade–ins, marches, boycotts,
rallies, and Freedom Rides (Blumberg 1).The cooperative work between Whites and African
Americans helped with the integration objective. In addition, the turmoil occurring throughout the

For some movements, motivation and willpower will simply fizzle out, for others, major leaders
will die and for some, the long series of campaigns and demonstrations will end with widespread

Movement fell into decline because of the rise of a revolutionary group but fell to an abrupt ending
when a founding leader and a prophet, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. By April of 1968,
the Civil Rights Movement had already been in decline for a few years and leadership and

This book makes clear that the struggle for racial equality was nationwide and not just isolated to
certain geographical locations. A common misconception about the civil rights movement is that
blatant racism was a problem only encountered in the Deep South. However, Waiting 'Til the
Midnight Hour does a great job of clarifying this misconception and showing the many elements of
the struggle for justice that blacks from coast to coast experienced.
One of the most elements of the book is the evolution of the organization called SNCC. SNCC
(Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was founded in conjunction with the lunch counter
sit0ins that originated in Greensboro, North Carolina in February 1960. SNCC activists were known
to practice slow, tedious and patient voter registration drives in the most dangerous parts of the
South. However, they seldom received credit for their efforts on a national level. Despite their lack
of national attention, SNCC activists often managed to annoy white federal officials and black civil
rights leaders. SNCC attracted radicals from the Revolutionary Action Movement, black nationalists
from the North and a host of other mavericks. From its humble beginnings, SNCC was a peaceful
group that used nonviolent methods to seek racial equality. Over the course of time, SNCC became
more assertive in their methods of demanding racial equality and

Black Power And The Civil Rights Movement

  • 1. Black Power And The Civil Rights Movement How accurate is it to say that the growth of Black Power was the most important factor in the weakening of the civil rights movement in the 1960s? Black power is a political slogan that was aimed to promote the ideas of the black racial group. There have been mixed views on weather it weakened the civil rights movement or strengthened it, this involved many factors. Some of the thing's that weakened the movement was the use violence, organisation and leadership and the CORE ideas and the message of the black power. However some people disagreed that Black Power weakened the movement as other factors like the Impact of the Vietnam War and the failure of Kings campaigns for the reasons like the difference between the north and south. One of the main reasons that the Civil Rights movement was weakened was because of the use of violence from the Black Power in order to get their message across. This was a contrast to other movements like the National Association for the advancement of coloured people otherwise known as the NAACP as other groups used peaceful tactics Unlike the Black Power who thought peaceful tactics weren't effective and wouldn't get them anywhere. The Black Panthers had a radical agenda that didn't want to work with the American Government they wanted a revolution not a slow change that was what was being offered to them. Many people were against the Black Power for the these reason as they contradicted themselves as they did everything that was previously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Congressman John Lewis Essay There is little debate among historians that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Congressman John Lewis are arguably two of the most important men in the Civil Rights Movement. Both of these men, Dr. Martin Luther King, in context of his involvement with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and John Lewis, in context of his involvement with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, left indelible impacts on the trajectory and success of the civil rights movement writ–large. While it is important to recognize the collective achievement of each of these men and the organizations in which they served, it is also important to recognize the reality that both of these men occupied distinct political positions within the movement which ultimately changed the ways in which they both would foresee the actions that they thought would be important and essential to the success of the movement. Politics, while more often observed in context of institutional power structures like governmental systems, i.e the federal government of the United States, is an important and fundamental feature of transgressive social movements as well. In the Civil Rights Movement, the fundamental differences in political ideology and direct action are best highlighted between King and Lewis in context of the each of the initial speeches that both of these men intended to give to attendees of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Hence, this essay will provide a comparative analysis of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Martin Luther King I Have A Dream Speech Analysis Mitchell 1 Brent Mitchell Professor Andrews English Comp 1 T–TH 9:30–10:45 The famous "I Have A Dream" speech was given 53 years ago, by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington. King was a civil rights activist and marched King wanted equality for everyone no matter the race. This speech was VERY POWERFUL to later generations basically leading up to why are we so bitter and judgmental! Race–centered conflicts in several U.S. cities have led to the strongest calls for policy reforms since the turbulent civil rights era of the 1960s. Propelled largely by videos of violent police confrontations with African–Americans, protesters have taken to the streets in Chicago, New York and other cities demanding changes in police tactics. From Philadelphia and New York to Kansas City and Los Angeles, joblessness, poor schools, crime, blight, high incarceration rates and segregated housing patterns have helped drive millions of Americans – many of them minorities – into poverty. In some localities, up to a third of the residents subsist below the federal poverty line. Many experts say economic growth is essential to combat urban poverty. More than 50 years after the official end of segregation and efforts by the Rev. Martin Luther ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Rhonda Williams Black Power Civil rights or black power, which of the two approaches was the dominant one in the twentieth– century African American struggle for racial and social equality? For Rhonda Williams the answer is, without a doubt, the latter one. In her book Concrete Demands, she argues that black power and not civil rights strategies were the dominant force in twentieth–century African American activism. That said, it is important to note that Williams differentiates between "black power" and "Black Power." While the latter one stands for a specific historical period of ideologically informed activism that left an indelible mark on African American politics and culture, the first one, black power with small letters has been central to African American political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, she suggests that the term black power emerged out of a broader attempt of African American empowerment and consequently characterizes a broad and timeless objective. Different from civil rights activism, which was based on a broad interracial coalition, the politics of black empowerment, while not generally opposed to coalitions with Whites, promoted political and social activism independent from Whites. Black Power paid more attention to the allocation of power and aims to end African Americans dependence on Whites' changing goodwill. Black Power with big B and big P represents the specific historical period during which African American activists developed and practiced "oppositional ideologies and politics." Their activism was "unapologetically" Black, informed by ideas of Black consciousness and pride that emphasized self– determination and racial autonomy. The following is a summary of the structure and the context of the book: Concrete Demands is divided into two main sections. The first one illustrates the ideological roots and practical routes that informed the Black Power movement of the 1960s. The book's first two chapters narrate the historical context of the different forms and ideas of black empowerment starting in 1917. In discussing the various progenitors of the Black Power activists, Williams portrays the multifaceted ideological and practical traditions, as well as the international foundations of early black power activism. The third chapter concentrates on the years 1963–66, a pivotal period in the African American liberation struggle during which Whites' continuing resistance to Blacks' long overdue participation in the political realm led many activists to take alternative routes to achieve lasting Black empowerment. The second part of the book is devoted to the specific historical period–the Black Power era. Chapter four ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Nonviolent Protests: March Sparknotes Many decisions had to be made when approaching discrimination and segregation; many wanted this to end. The debate on what was best to approach the dangers of fighting for what you believed was weighed down to two options; violent protests or nonviolent protests. In the graphic novel titled "March" written and experienced by John Lewis himself with designs by Nate Powell, depicts the struggles of civil rights and the fight to earn it. The novel goes off to show mostly nonviolent protests, but outside of the novel during the 1960's depicts and describes a different approach; Violent and free Protests. He ended up joining the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), also participating in Freedom Rides and sit–ins which got him arrested. Stokely Carmichael one day would watch television and see what was going on in the south. Sit–ins were in full action and motivated Carmichael to head down to the south and contribute to the civil rights movement. Stokely Carmichael was only a freshman when he participated in a freedom ride; he would continue to be involved in freedom rides until the year 1964 when he discovered the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. His first impact with the SNCC was raising the number of registered black voters, more than white voters in Lowndes County. Stokely Carmichael grew frustrated with the response to his registration efforts, "he decides to leave the SNCC and create his own party; The Lowndes County Freedom Organization" (History.com, Staff/Authors Unknown). Stokely Carmichael Looked up to Martin Luther King Jr's philosophy, but as a young civil rights leader and being very frustrated with the current situations of the protests such as mobs attacking and vandalizing property, he knew the tempo of the protests needed to be pushed more. Stokely Carmichael would now present a self–defense approach to protests, he would coin the term "Black Power" (History.com, Staff/Authors Unknown) a term that showed anger and frustration towards racial discrimination. Black Power" also became a sign and staple for breaking the nonviolent approach towards protesting. This was difficult on Martin Luther King's part since Stokely Carmichael was an up and coming civil rights leader, but chose to be against the usual nonviolent form of protesting. Stokely Carmichael wanted to being a little bit of fear when came down to his protests, something that John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr, but another civil rights leader took a step further in the aggression of ... • 8. A Comparison Of Malcolm X Vs. Martin Luther King Jr. The Civil Rights movement in the 1960's birthed the most prominent figures in the battle against racism in the United States. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. are immortalized as the men who stood up and spoke out during the most crucial time in US History for African American activism. Though often brought up in the same vein, the two had complete opposite ideology about how to reach equality. Their influence created many prominent groups in the 60s against mistreatment of African Americans, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). According to the name of this group, they were a nonviolent team of young black activists that stemmed from MLK's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Apparent in their name, they shared the same peaceful approach as MLK, but over time and as the hardships of the movement began to callous the young group they shifted towards the 'by–any–means–necessary' approach of Malcolm X. Through the excerpts in "Takin it to the Streets," one can see the stark difference between Malcolm X's more aggressive approach, MLK's loving approach, and the SNCC shifting its views over time but always maintaining a steadfast commitment to the cause and a youthful bravado. Martin Luther King Jr. is a household name. He became a martyr, known for exclusively preaching about love and dreams of equality. MLK was impassioned and eloquent and palatable enough for white people. He never wavered from the idea that the resolution to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How Did Historians Contribute To The Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement is often thought to begin with a tired Rosa Parks defiantly declining to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She paid the price by going to jail. Her refusal sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which civil rights historians have in the past credited with beginning the modern civil rights movement. Others credit the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education with beginning the movement. Regardless of the event used as the starting point of the moment, everyone can agree that it is an important period in history. In the forty–five years since the modern civil rights movement, several historians have made significant contributions to the study of this era. These historians ... Whites were afraid to be labeled as racially moderate, and typically had to join the side of white supremacy for many reasons, among them the fact that class had previously aligned African– Americans and poorer whites in a fight against poverty, Brown elevated racial status above class. Also, the decision made those in power in the South exert their disproportionate political power to keep the state government in their hands. Finally, some Southerners who normally would not care about race were swayed by the fact that the federal government was trying to impose a decision in education–an arena typically reserved for state government. This made the fight one of states' rights versus federal decree. Klarman's argument claims that this mobilization of white resistance in the South led to increased tension and violence against African–Americans. For example, the bitter protests in Birmingham and Selma, along with the violence in the Black Belt areas of Lowndes County, where police dogs, fire hoses and lynching were used came as a result of this massive resistance movement. This violence, when media attention was paid to it, "converted northern whites to the civil rights cause by exposing the true evils of the Jim Crow system." Civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King, played on that knowledge and specifically targeted cities where the most powerful backlash would occur, gaining them media air time and allowing the Northerners to ... Comparing The Philosophies Of Dr King And Malcolm X During the civil rights movement, the people (African American) and theirs leaders use different methods or approaches to achieve their goal, but I will focus on DR Martin Luther King JR and Malcolm X philosophies towards the "role of violence". DR King and Malcolm X are two black men living in America when black people are treated and considered inferior human race. They are actually second class citizens in their own country. Although Dr King and Malcolm X goals are the same, but their method or approach towards achieving it are drastically different. In 1968 Kwame Ture define Black Power as " the ability of black people to political get together and organize themselves so that they can speak form a position of strength rather a position of weakness"(Lander 1967,p.8). Now looking at this definition, I can say that their philosophy is to liberate black people from white colony and instilling Black people mind that Black is beautiful and gorgeous in every aspect of life. Black power movement did not believe that blacks should totally assimilate into white folks because that means that their history is worth not preserving. This leads me back to what I believed is their philosophy (liberating Blacks form white colony). The Black power movement also accepted Malcolm X philosophy towards violence than Dr King's view towards violence. They believed that Dr King view of nonviolence tactics is not a viable option for blacks' libration, in fact integration is as good as surrendering to white supremacy. Their believe is that blacks should be a force of their own and they are ready to take their rights in a violent way if consistently denied the most basic of human rights. In all sense, they are ... Goals and Strategies of the Civil Rights Movement Essay African–American Civil Rights Movement Throughout the 1960's, the widespread movement for African American civil rights had transformed in terms of its goals and strategies. The campaign had intensified in this decade, characterized by greater demands and more aggressive efforts. Although the support of the Civil Rights movement was relatively constant, the goals of the movement became more high–reaching and specific, and its strategies became less compromising. African Americans' struggle for equality during the 1960's was a relentless movement that used change for progress. The excerpt reads further as a long dissertation of specific goals of the organization, which include black participation in government and economy, defiance against profiteers of slums, and the overall shift to a socialist America. In the socialist train of thought, society is invested in the integrity and economic participation of its people, and, therefore, blacks become almost invaluable to America. Here, each individual is seen as vital to the nation, because, if not, then the whole foundation of the socialist philosophy collapses. And so, it is implied in this document that a change for a new system of government in a new America is needed, which greatly contrasts from simply making people aware of a perfect world with guaranteed civil rights. Another significant transformation took place in the Civil Rights Movement in terms of its strategies. In analyzing this facet of the movement, we notice a great shift from nonviolent demonstration to forward, forceful action. Specifically, at the start of the Civil Rights Movement, lunch counter sit–ins were evident throughout the nation, as were Freedom Riders. In this special section, a leading African American historian explores how the group is forging a powerful new form of civil rights activism. Plus: How police in 1970s Detroit unleashed an undercover execution squad, and the modern–day rise of "warrior policing." EVEN IN THE SPLINTERED AND OFTEN FRACTIOUS world of social justice movements, Black Lives Matter doesn't fit easily into existing categories. Few grassroots uprisings have done as much, in such a short period of time, to focus attention on long–neglected issues of racial justice, gender, and economic inequality. Yet so far, BLM has not followed up on its initial victories by building the kind of lasting, hierarchical organizations that grew out of the civil rights movement; nor has it dedicated itself to a single, easily identifiable goal, like enacting the Voting Rights Act. How are we to make sense of organizers who themselves remain so loosely organized? And if Black Lives Matter isn't devoting itself primarily to bringing about substantive legal and legislative change, then how can it hope to transform its resistance into lasting and meaningful gains in human rights? Such questions are understandable, given the course that BLM activists are charting for their organization. Essay on African American Academic Discipline Studies The Origin, Development, and Purpose of Africana Studies as an Academic Discipline Thesis African American Studies is a change agent for the ideology of Black Americans. Black studies as an academic discipline serves to reorient the perspective of African Americans in an effort to regain a sense of pride and cultural identity stolen by white society. Abstract Ever since the Europeans forcefully brought Africans west, black people have struggled with a loss of their true culture and identity. The vulnerability of a displaced and victimized race subjected them to view conformity and assimilation as a panacea for racism, discrimination, and oppression. It wasn't until the 1960s that students began to realize and protest the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Black Power, the idea of "...African Americans controlling the social, political, and economic institutions in their community,"3 coined by Stokely Carmichael, harvested the support of blacks across America as they saw that "integration is the illusion of inclusion."4 The idea of "Black Power" was meant "...to start bringing black people together under a slogan that everyone understood."5 "Students began to challenge the meaning and purpose of education and forced colleges and universities to reexamine their role and function in American Society... (They) demonstrated that education should and did serve to enlighten a people relative to their civil rights and social justice."6 The birth of first department for Africana Studies took place on the campus of San Francisco State College on February 1, 1968 during a "five–month strike by a campus–wide, multiracial coalition of thousands of students and faculty members."7 Dr. Nathan Hare was called in by college president, S. • 30. Persuasive Essay In motorcross it's all about the bike you ride. With so many manufacturers it's hard to decide which bike you want. Each manufacturer has different tools to persuade people to buy their newest greatest bike. Between commercials, free giveaways, meet and greets, and short videos posted online, they have a good chance of winning some buyers. Personally the biggest advertisement that grabbed my eye as a young teenager was the posters sold. As a thirteen year old American teenager, I wanted to cover the walls in my room with my favorite bands, zombies, and motorcycles. So I would always buy these posters of a professional rider standing next to the newest bike, or them jumping a new bike across an enormous jump. Seeing all of these posters on my wall made me want a new bike. It made me want to be like the pro riders that were on those posters. These were the people I looked up to growing up as a kid. This is just one of the many tools used by dirt bike manufacturers to sell their products. I am going to focus on a specific poster made by Suzuki with a picture of Ricky Carmichael 'The winningest motocross racer of all time.' jumping a brand new Suzuki through the air. This poster was made in 2008 during the outdoor motocross season. Many American teenagers hung this poster on their wall just like me. Now think about how many more Suzuki motorcycles were sold because of Ricky Carmichael winning on those titles on that bike. Considering the motorcycle is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over the course of the semester we have looked at movement's that have helped advocate for civil rights. One of the movements of that we looked at specifically in class was Martin L. King Jr's movement and his "Letter from the Birmingham Jail". In this letter, we hear Dr. King's honest opinion about the criticism he received from his opponents of timely protest. We gain a lot of insight about King's honest opinion about his political motivations of his movements and why he felt that it was critical to act when he did. Another movement that we discussed but didn't directly look at was the Black Panther Party. An outside article that discusses the Black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With stagnation there would be no awareness to a social issue. Looking further into King's letter, another crucial point that he brought up is that without significant activism the oppressing party would never give up what they wanted them to. Also, to make the problem politically present they had to present the problem in a way in which everybody would see the growing tensions in the community. This is later talked about in King's "direct–action program" with him creating an issue that makes for a political change. He felt that the direct–action would create direct changes to the current problem. A crucial point that really brought me to an emotional thought is when King mentioned his daughter crying. The mention of his daughter and her not being able to go to theme parks was an upsetting moment. This point brought up a relatable perspective that added a unique thought to his argument. In summary King makes some very relatable points that when looking back now make's us see how he really helped move the civil rights movement along and cause real change for black communities. Looking at the outside article of "Black Panther Party: 1966–1982" by Michael X. Delli Carpini we see that the Black Panther Party did not share the same exact ideals as Dr. King. Although they did advocate strongly for equal rights for black communities they did not have the same patience that Martin Luther King had. The main points of the Black Panther Party movement ... Stokely Carmichael wrote a book called Black Power and in it he wrote about how black people in that time did not accept segregation. Martin Luther King also made important points in his speeches about segregation and how during this time black people decided to make a change. The movement in the Alabama Black Belt lasted the longest and many people do not acknowledge that fact. Even after all the protests started to fade away from the headlines, black people in Alabama continued to protest for freedom. Many black citizens in Alabama began to realize that there were other white people in Alabama who also wanted to end segregation. In Lowndes County, Alabama, there was a rich man who owned thousands of acres of land, named Harrell Hammonds. Hammonds was a probate judge who raised cattle and grew cotton on his farm. Hammonds was also an aristocratic politician. Many people noticed Hammonds as being against segregation. Hammonds argued in a court of law that everyone should be treated equally no matter the color of their skin. Later in his life, Hammonds also gave his support for black people to be able to get an equal education as white people. There was an unhappy ending to Hammonds support to end segregation. • 35. Argumentative Essay On Black Power Through the mid 1900's, the black movement began in hopes of creating a better future around a certain view that was based around social and political aspects. The Black Power movement came about due to the fact that over the recent years, non–violent actions were not combatting racism and advocators of this movement wanted to start seeing results. The main purpose of this was because blacks had simple, humane requests to end racism and give everyone equal opportunity. After researching there was a passage that fit perfectly into describing the overall view of the movement and how there was a direct controversy.."The controversy over Black Power reflected and perpetuated a split in the civil rights movement between organizations that maintained that nonviolent methods were the only way to achieve civil rights goals and those organizations that had become frustrated and were ready to adopt violence and black separatism". (). When looking at both Stokely Carmichael and Dr. King's views there can be contrasts on both including some viewing King's view as outdated with little change and Carmichael as turning their beliefs into a racially integrated society that some did not agree with. The black power movement was also known as black nationalism which in other words meant that there was advocacy for the racial redefinition for African American citizens. The first person who claimed the term, "black power" and used it in a social and racial term was Stokely Carmichael. It was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You grow up surrounded by a diverse population of people packed tightly into one city. But with this kind of diversity come the questions of self–identification and how others view you. I was born and raised in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights which is known for its mostly Dominican population. Moreover, growing up in the public school system and everyday New York living has exposed me to many different Latino and Black communities and culture. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has always made me debate race because in the eyes of others race is skin color, hair, eyes. Race is what people see and becomes less and less about what your background is. Living in New York City you would think people would be more open–minded. Recently, I was walking into a downtown nightclub with about four other Spanish females when we over hear a, I'm assuming, White female telling the security we just walked passed "How dare you let in these minorities before me?!" It was just a reminder that even though we've progressed in terms of racial equality there still exists an ignorant population. Another link that I find interesting among the Afro–Latino communities of New York City is that racially discriminated races are pushed into poverty. Philippe Bourgois writes about New York City during the crack epidemic of the 1980s. He explains through cultural reproduction theory that although it may seem that inner–city residents appeared to live in a community astray from the mainstream ideals they actually held similar values such as the drive to achieve the "American dream." He describes the inner–city as a culture of resistance that intends to accomplish its goal of success through the refusal of being stepped on by the "white man." The Civil Rights Movement brought many accomplishments to African Americans such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The key issues that African Americans fought for were voting rights, integration and racial equality. They were tired of the discrimination and humiliation they received as a result of the segregation laws imposed on them. "State laws mandated racial separation in schools, parks, playgrounds, restaurants, hotels, public transportation, theaters, restrooms and so on" (Blumberg 40). Lawsuits had been tried to gain rights such as the unsuccessful Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 and the successful Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Although, the Brown v. Board of Education of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strategy of violence was a divisive force in the Black community; many African American protestors were indecisive in which way to fight for their rights. Violence also proved to be unproductive because it only caused more resistance and chaos in time of confrontation. Violent protests such as riots ended up damaging the Black Community. African Americans resulted being the victims of these riots, and as a result the most affected by the violent confrontations. Moreover, the use of violence created stiff race relations between the African Americans and White. Demonstrating that the violence method was ineffective for the civil rights movement is the fact that the "Black power movement faded almost as quickly as it appeared" (Ware 161). The nonviolence tactic was more effective than violence in the Civil Rights Movement because it caused many throughout the nation to feel sympathy for the African American cause. Particularly, many White people began to sympathize with African Americans. Many joined organizations, thus supporting various forms of protesting including sit–ins, pray–ins, wade–ins, marches, boycotts, rallies, and Freedom Rides (Blumberg 1).The cooperative work between Whites and African Americans helped with the integration objective. A common misconception about the civil rights movement is that blatant racism was a problem only encountered in the Deep South. However, Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour does a great job of clarifying this misconception and showing the many elements of the struggle for justice that blacks from coast to coast experienced. One of the most elements of the book is the evolution of the organization called SNCC. SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was founded in conjunction with the lunch counter sit0ins that originated in Greensboro, North Carolina in February 1960. SNCC activists were known to practice slow, tedious and patient voter registration drives in the most dangerous parts of the South. However, they seldom received credit for their efforts on a national level. Despite their lack of national attention, SNCC activists often managed to annoy white federal officials and black civil rights leaders. SNCC attracted radicals from the Revolutionary Action Movement, black nationalists from the North and a host of other mavericks.
