Cause And Effect In Act 1 Of Hamlet
In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, the opening act introduces many characters to the audience.
One of the main characters, eventually the antagonist of the play, is the recently crowned King
Claudius. Claudius takes the throne of Denmark shortly after the passing of his brother King
Hamlet. As the play develops, the audience comes to find that the strong intelligent ruler that assures
Denmark's safety at the beginning of the act is not the man he pretends to be. In the eyes of the
audience, Claudius goes from the calm and collected King of Denmark to an adulterous murderer,
but he does not reveal this to the people of Denmark. Claudius first appears in the play in Act I,

As Claudius addresses the court, he mentions his newly acquired son Prince Hamlet. Hamlet
responds to this aside uttering, "A little more than kin and less than kind" (1.2.67). Hamlet finds his
uncle's marriage to his mother to follow much too close to the passing of his father. Overall, Hamlet
finds the marriage to be unethical and wrong. He is saying that his relationship with Claudius has
too many family ties, and this draws the attention of the audience. Hamlet's words make the
audience think again about the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude. The audience may wonder
if Claudius had only married Gertrude to gain power, or if he had acquired feelings for Gertrude
while King Hamlet was still alive. The audience receives their answers later in Act I when Prince
Hamlet talks to the ghost of his father. The ghost of King Hamlet warns Prince Hamlet that his death
was no accident. He tells Prince Hamlet that he had been murdered, and that "the serpent that did
sting thy father's life / Now wears his crown" (1.5.46–47). The ghost then continues, and refers to
Claudius as "that incestuous, that adulterate beast" (1.5.49). The audience viewpoint on Claudius
drastically changes after Prince Hamlet's talk with his father's ghost. Instead of being a calm and
sturdy leader of Denmark, he is now an adulterate murderer.

Essay on Revenge in Hamlet
Revenge in Hamlet
It is natural human instinct for a son to feel offended over the death of his father. So is the instance
of the two young princes, both spurned by the sudden death of King Hamlet toward destinies of
avenging fallen fathers, which emerge to permit comparisons in Shakespeare's great tragedy Hamlet.
In the first act of the play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and Fortinbras, Prince of Norway, both are
fatherless heirs whose uncles occupy the throne of their respected countries. Both princes seek
revenge for the events relating to the death of their fathers while their uncles and kings oppose their
nephews, plotting to accomplish their own objectives. However, by what is learned in the brief
sidelined accounts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas Fortinbras directs his vengeance toward a target outside his family and country, Hamlet's
enemy is exposed within the very core of Denmark, his own family. As a ghost from the grave, King
Hamlet returns to reveal to his son that Claudius, the king's very brother caused his death by pouring
poison into his ear while he slept. This earth quaking news is compounded with the recent marriage
of now King Claudius to Hamlet's short mourning mother, Gertrude. If the offenses of treason,
parricide murder, and adultery were not enough to incite Hamlet to avenge his father, the ghost gives
a fourth reason. This unexpected death was most untimely for King Hamlet because he had not
repented for the sins he had accumulated throughout his life; thus, a sentence of suffering in
purgatory withholds his entrance to heaven. Unlike Prince Fortinbras's goal of seeking retribution by
recovering what was lost upon his father's death, the ghost of King Hamlet calls his son to avenge
him for deeds and responsibilities that remained even after his life left his body. For "this most foul,
strange, and unnatural"(1.5.29) murder Prince Hamlet pledges to avenge his father by killing his
uncle, king, and mother's husband, Claudius, without harming the Queen.
By gathering "a list of lawless resolutes for food and diet to some enterprise that hath a stomach in
't, which is no other..." Fortinbras sought to accomplish

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, The Prince Of Denmark
William Shakespeare's Hamlet, The Prince of Denmark has remained to be the most astonishing of
William Shakespeare's tragedies. It is widely known to be considered as a philosophy or drama
based play, but moral center is universally acknowledged. The characters in Hamlet persistently
struggle with the power of their consciences, as they are tempted to satisfy their innermost desires.
Hamlet, The Prince of Denmark, is bestowed upon the strenuous task of taking justice into his hands
to avenge his father's murder. Through this, complications of morality is put on display and is the
overall moral center in Hamlet which is shown in his conflict of the soul between honour and
conscience; emphasizing the moral controversy regarding revenge, ... Show more content on

He is given an available chance to avenge his father's murder, but he ultimately decides to not harm
Claudius believing he was praying. Furthermore, he assumed that it would be unjust to kill him and
send him to heaven without true vengeance. This describes his indecisive conscience. Moreover,
Hamlet displays honour in his dealings with Ophelia. He tries to warn her away from him by
appearing to her in a state of disarray and acting rather psychotic. This is evident when he speaks to
her for the last time; "Get thee to a nunnery: why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself
indifferent honest; but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not
borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at my back than I have
thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. Venegas 2
What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all
believe none of us. Go thy ways to a nunnery," (3.1.131–139). Through this, morality is put on
display and is the overall moral center in Hamlet which is shown in his conflict of the soul between
honour and conscience.
Hamlet's questioning of life is a part of the moral center in Hamlet which promotes his virtue,
perseverance, and 'gentle human' qualities. In Hamlet's famous to be or not to be soliloquy, he is
contemplating suicide. He compares death to a "little sleep," (3.1.68), which

The Genius of Hamlet, the Very Sane Prince of Denmark...
The Genius of Hamlet, the Very Sane Prince of Denmark
Hamlet in Shakepeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is often seen as a lunatic. Lucid
and ingenious, Prince Hamlet falls into a state of emotional turmoil, but he is never insane. Hamlet
feigns madness to reveal his anguish concerning the two women he used to love – his mother
Gertrude and his lover Ophelia. To escape estrangement from his countrymen, Hamlet appears to
waver between madness and sanity. And, to avoid moral estrangement, the Prince plans on
revenging his father's death under the guise of madness. There is no question that Hamlet feigns
insanity, and he does so to voice his emotions to the two closest women in his life, to influence the

While he muses to himself about Gertrude's conduct, Hamlet hears Horatio, Marcellus, and
Barnardo arrive. Hamlet quickly says, "But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue" (I, ii. 159).
He realizes that it is best for him to keep his thoughts and plans to himself, because to do otherwise
is to breach the rules of hierarchy. Soon, Hamlet does appear "mad" in his appearance by looking
unkempt, and Queen Gertrude attributes this to her husband's death and to her "o'er–hasty marriage"
to Claudius (II, ii. 56–57). Thus, when Hamlet rebukes her in public and in private, Queen Gertrude
does not become angry. Instead, she feels sorry for him and feels somewhat guilty about her
remarriage. When Hamlet suggests for her to take a look in the mirror, Gertrude admits that Hamlet
has "turn'st [her] eyes into [her] very soul" (III, iv. 79). Had she thought that Hamlet was sane,
Gertrude might not have been as tender towards her son as she was. Hamlet at this point is sane but
also very bitter. He says, "I will speak daggers to her, but use none" (III, ii. 366). A madman would
have used a real dagger and carried out the rash action of murdering his own mother. When Hamlet
speaks to the ghost in Gertrude's room, the Queen believes that her son has truly gone mad. Gertrude
pities Hamlet, but even if the ghost only exists in Hamlet's imagination, the apparition functions as
his conscience. The ghost reminds Hamlet not to stray from his goal, which

Examples Of Something Is Rotten In The Past In Hamlet
Stuck in the Past "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4.90). These words describe the
situation of Denmark in William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet after the death of its title character,
King Hamlet. His son – also named Hamlet – returns home to witness his father's funeral, but soon
descends on a quest for revenge against his father's murderer. The death of the Danish king and his
son's spirit of vengeance set off a chain of events that ultimately leads to the death of Prince Hamlet,
the collapse of the royal family, and the fall of Denmark itself in the hands of Norway. In the
beginning, as Prince Hamlet goes to speak to the ghost of his father, one of the royal guards
comments that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" ... Show more content on

Prince Hamlet most closely embodies this during his encounter with his father's ghost. When the
ghost appears, it beckons for Hamlet to follow him, and when his guards Marcellus and Horatio
advise him to resist the ghost's intentions, Hamlet replies that "my fate cries out and makes each
petty artere in this body as hardy as the Nemean lion's nerve" (1.4.81–83). After hearing this,
Marcellus gives Horatio the crucial statement that "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark"
(1.4.90). Prince Hamlet's determination to follow the ghost – citing it as his fate – leads to Marcellus
propelling his observation of an underlying problem in the state of Denmark. By using the ghost
(commonly used in media to signify the dead or the past) and following it with Marcellus's
commentary soon after, Shakespeare uses symbolism and context to describe how humanity's
attachment to the past is dangerous. In the next scene, the ghost tells Hamlet that the king was killed
by Claudius poisoning his ear, also commanding his son to "let not the royal bed of Denmark be a
couch for luxury and damned incest" (1.5.83–84), and ending the conversation with the words
"adieu, adieu, adieu. Remember me" (1.5.91). The young Hamlet takes this command to an extreme,
declaring that "thy commandment alone shall live within the book and context of my brain, unmixed

Timeless Aspects of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles...
Timeless Aspects of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles
William Shakespeare is considered the greatest playwright, if not the greatest writer in the history of
literature. His criticisms of society in his works have passed the "test of time," and still are as
significant today as they were when they were first written. There are many similarities in Hamlet,
Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, and Trifles by Susan Glaspell, written in the early 20th
century, that further support the timelessness of Shakespeare's works. Despite the fact that
Shakespeare's Hamlet was written many centuries ago, his analyses of certain values in society are
not only similar to those portrayed in the much more recent play, Trifles, but also ... Show more

Wright. Unaware of this clue, the men struggle, and end up with no evidence to prove who
murdered John Wright. Furthermore, in Trifles, the mistreatment that Mrs. Wright has endured from
her husband, which has turned her into a different person from her former self, Minnie Forster, is
often overlooked. In fact, John Wright has "extinguished" "the light" (Boyle 57) in Mrs. Wright's
eyes, much like the Astronomer has done to his wife in "Astronomer's Wife." The little things
around the house, especially the bird that the women find dead, with its neck broken, symbolize
Mrs. Wright's mistreatment. According to D. C. Browning in Dictionary of Literary Biography, "the
bird is a symbol for all that was Mrs. Wright, and its death represents the death of Mrs. Wright's
spirit."
Similarly, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark women are also put in inferior roles. One
example of this is Ophelia, and how her brother, Laertes, and father, Polonius, take many of the
decisions in her life. Polonius often dictates her life by telling her what she cannot do. This occurs
when Polonius decides he does not want his daughter near Hamlet, and orders Ophelia to stay away
from him. Later in the play, Hamlet approaches Ophelia and she immediately reports to Polonius
saying, "No, my good lord, but, as you did command, /

Hamlet Death And Decay Essay
Exposing Evil in Hamlet through Death and Decay Death and decay undeniably plays a significant
role on how Shakespeare's play Hamlet unfolds. The play itself makes use of aspects of death and
decay to expose Denmark's state of demoralization following the king's sudden death. Death and
decay reveals and highlights betrayal, corruption and unacceptable leadership in the state of
Denmark. First of all, death and decay was used to expose betrayal in Denmark through Claudius'
treachery. Claudius is clearly referred to by King Hamlet's apparition as a serpent, a serpent which
"stung me (King Hamlet) so the whole ear of Denmark is by a forged process of my death"
(1.5.772–74). Serpents or snakes are often closely associated to betrayal and deception especially in
religious texts such as the bible, but more specifically the story and Adam and Eve. Claudius'
actions openly proves that he really is a serpent considering the fact that he betrayed Denmark by
poisoning King Hamlet and deceiving everyone around him that King Hamlet died of natural causes
in order to solicit the crown (1.5.776–77). The king's massacre exposes the true hidden character of

indecency of how the new king came to be. Claudius really is a substantial problem for Denmark, he
killed the true king and stole his wife there really is no guarantee that he would not attack and also
kill those who choose to oppose him and his orders. Claudius is a big liability for Denmark due to
the pure fact that he is very unpredictable and he'll do anything to obtain and stay in

Death in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet Essay
"So shall you hear of carnal, bloody, and unnatural acts, of accidental judgments, casual slaughters,
of deaths put on by cunning and forced cause," (Hamlet, Act V, Scene 2, Lines 381–384). So says
Horatio, best friend of Prince Hamlet in the final few lines of the play. He speaks these words after
the deaths of Hamlet, Claudius, King of Denmark, Gertrude, Queen of Denmark, and Laertes, son of
Polonius. Also dead are Hamlet, King of Denmark, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, former friends of
Hamlet, Polonius, councilor to the King, and Ophelia, daughter of Polonius. Death is an extremely
prevalent theme in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. However, each death is unique in circumstances,
causes, and effects. Three important deaths in Hamlet were ... Show more content on

Hamlet had not realised that his father had been murdered. The ghost goes on to say, "The serpent
that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown," (Hamlet, Act I, Scene 5, Lines 38–39). It is at
this point that Hamlet realises that his father's murderer was his uncle, Claudius. Hamlet swears to
have revenge. This sets up the circumstances that cause the remainder of the action in the play.
One of the most interesting deaths in Hamlet is the death of Ophelia. Ophelia was the daughter of
Polonius, councilor to the king. However, she was also Prince Hamlet's girlfriend. She died by
drowning in a river. It is most likely that she committed suicide, though there was never any
evidence to that effect, and it is impossible to say for sure.
The chain of events leading to her death came from two different directions. One cause of her
apparent suicide could have been Hamlet's madness. They had been lovers, but during the time prior
to her death he became very cold toward her and bordered on insanity. In one brief soliloquy she
says the following:
And I, of ladies most deject and wretched,
That sucked the honey of his musicked vows,
Now see that noble and most sovereign reason
Like sweet bells jangled, out of time and harsh,
That unmatched form and feature of blown youth
Blasted with ecstasy. O, woe is me
T' have seen what I have seen, see what I see!

How Does Hamlet Seek Revenge In Hamlet
Even though the ghost might be an evil spirit that pretends to be King Hamlet, Hamlet should seek

Denmark could become even worse. To begin with, Hamlet is the prince of the country, and his duty

The Tragedy Of Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, By William...
In the play of "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", by William Shakespeare. Revenge was
the cause of the characters in Hamlet to act recklessly through rage and emotions, in a certain degree
of reason. This has been there core value of an eye for an eye; this is not the best way to deal with a
problem. Fortinbras, Laertes, and Hamlet wanted nothing more than to avenge their father's death.
They acted on impulsive emotions that was determination by the need for revenge for the death of
their father, this is what governed to the downfall of the two, and the rise of the power of the third.
Since the obverse of the three major families were each murdered, the oldest sons of these families

Hamlet Virtue vs. Villainy Essay
Hamlet Virtue vs. Villainy The legendary drama, Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare is a play
illustrating the theme of virtue vs. villainy. The 17th century tragedy is plagued with treachery and
deceit as it opens with the news of a foul murder in the kingdom of Denmark. Prince Hamlet, by
word of his late father's ghost, is informed that his uncle Claudius is to blame for his father's sudden
demise. Prince Hamlet's mission is to uncover the secrets surrounding the murder and to avenge his

Ophelia has gone mad, not only because of the immense turmoil she has experienced from the great
loss of her father but also from her unattainable love for Prince Hamlet. Her loss of sanity leads to
her ultimate death, which furthers the corruption of Denmark. Disease inevitably leads to greater
acts of corruption. The play, Hamlet, is filled with great acts of corruption that result from the many
diseased mentalities existing in the Kingdom of Denmark. In the early scenes of the play, after
seeing the ghost of King Hamlet, Marcellus reflects on the condition of the country. The guard says,
"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," (Act I, iv, Line 100). Marcellus infers to the reader
that the appearance or apparition of the ghost of King Hamlet means that there must be extreme
corruption mounting in the country. If it were not for the diseased mental state of Claudius, King
Hamlet would not have been murdered nor would he come to speak to the guards of the kingdom.
After the death of his sister, Laeretes, the son of the king's late advisor, speaks to King Claudius
about seeking justice for the deaths of Ophelia and his father, Polonius. After discussion, King

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William...
Somewhere between the years of 1599 and 1602, William Shakespeare wrote his longest, most
influential and powerful tragedy, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Set in the Kingdom of
Denmark, the play stages the revenge that a young prince seeks against his uncle for murdering his
father, inheriting the throne, and subsequently marrying his mother.
Prince Hamlet, a university student, is an extremely philosophical and thoughtful character. When
his father the King of Denmark dies, Hamlet returns home only to be presented with evidence that
suggests his uncle Claudius may have been responsible for his father's murder. In the initial acts of
the tragedy, Hamlet seeks to prove his uncle's guilt and contemplates all of his actions and ... Show

He does not believe that it is truly his father. Even after seeing the ghost himself, Hamlet remains

killed him in order to steal both his wife and the throne. Hamlet becomes confused after seeing his
father's ghost and is unsure of how he should react. However, he vows to seek revenge against his
uncle, although he refuses to do so without first having sufficient evidence to prove his uncle's guilt.
A few months later, with the help of actors from his university in Wittenberg, Hamlet decides to
stage a play of his father's poisoning for Claudius. Hamlet believes that Claudius' reaction to the
play will either confirm or deny his guilt. In act three, Hamlet returns to the theme of suicide. He
examines the moral and immoral aspects of suicide in a world that he considers to be so anguished
and corrupt in his most famous soliloquy: To be, or not to be: that is the question:

In the play "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", Gertrude and Ophelia share similar
characteristics. Gertrude is the queen of Denmark and also the mother to hamlet, and Ophelia is the
daughter of Polonius, sister to Laertes and hamlet's love. As a mother it is a maternal instinct to be
loving, kind, caring and be there for your child during times of strife and joy. In contrast, a girlfriend

Hamlet Prince Of Denmark And The Awakening Analysis
The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare was written in 1599 during the
Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era was also known as the "golden age" because of its
developments and changes. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was published in 1899, which was the
Victorian era. The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark and the Awakening were written many
years apart and also in different literary eras, but they share many similar themes. The Awakening
and Hamlet express love as major theme. In both literary works it is presented in the same forms and
different forms. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the theme of love is expressed
through many characters and relationships within the play. One way it is expressed is as tragic love.
Tragic love is expresses in King Hamlet and Gertrude. It is tragic love because their relationship
together was very short lived due to the temper of King Hamlets' brother, Claudius. Another way
that tragic love is expressed is through the relationship of Prince Hamlet and Ophelia. That is
exemplified as tragic love because Hamlet deeply loves Ophelia but Ophelia's father Polonis doesn't
care for Hamlet and doesn't was his daughter to pursue him because he thinks that Hamlet will just
hurt her and since Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, Ophelia doesn't have the social standing to be
good enough as the potential queen since she is just a daughter of a courtier and Polonis doesn't
want he daughter hurt. This is also expressed as a tragic love because they cannot end up together
because while Hamlet is away in England Ophelia drowns, but hamlet doesn't find out until he
comes back and is spying on her funeral. The theme of tragic love can also be expressed with
Laertes and Ophelia, since Laertes is Ophelia's brother he wants to protect her and at Ophelia's
funeral Laertes asked the doctor "Must there no more be done?" and the doctor basically says we
can't do anything else sine she took her own life, but Laertes wants anything and everything possible
done to give her what he thinks she deserves and he knows that deserves more than that since he
refers to her as a "minist'ring angel...". The theme can also be expressed through the Gertrude and
Ophelia, since at

The Great Prince Of Denmark, Hamlet, By William Shakespeare
The Elizabethan era consisted of a time where women were viewed as minorities in society and
were often thought to have been devised in the weaker image of men. Being given limited political,
economical and social freedom led to their diminutive role in literature. In contrast to this degrading
trend, Shakespeare introduced femininity in a new light. He created female characters who
contradict the stereotypes of his time, impacting both the plot and surrounding characters of his
plays. One of his most famous tragedies, Hamlet, revolves around the great prince of Denmark,
Hamlet, who encounters the apparition of his deceased father, the former king. The ghost asks that
Hamlet seeks revenge upon Claudius, his uncle and new father, for it was he who murdered him and
seduced the queen, as a plan to gain top status in society. Faking madness, Hamlet strives to kill
Claudius, and although successful, many other lives, including his own, pass in the meanwhile .
Ophelia, the daughter of the king's top advisors, finds herself caught in the middle of this situation
as people assume Hamlet has gone mad out of pure love for her. Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, soon
faces the consequences of participating in her husband's murder. Despite the women in
Shakespeare's Hamlet being classified as fragile and submissive, staying true to the beliefs of the
time period, they are exceptionally significant figures in the progression of the plot in this bloody
tragedy. This is demonstrated by Gertrude

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, Ophelia is a passive woman. She went
through her life just letting whatever happened to her happen. Her father, Polonius, was a
controlling father, like most fathers of that time. Her boyfriend, Prince Hamlet, is insane and cruel.
With these two men controlling her life more than anyone else it made her rely on both of them
being there. Ophelia grew to rely on people telling her what to do. Ophelia's mental stability
deteriorates because Hamlet rejects her and her father is killed by Hamlet. Ophelia begins acting
erratically right before her death. Ophelia, having relied on her father and Hamlet completely,
needed them to be there for her, and when they were not she went insane. She began singing songs
of death and sexual promiscuity saying things such as,
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine.
Then up he rose, and donned his clothes,
And dupped the chamber door.
Let in the maid that out a maid
Never departed more. this is implying Hamlet and Ophelia had a physical relationship, which would

Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, By William Shakespeare
The famous tragedy entitled Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often abbreviated to Hamlet and written at
the turn of the seventeenth century, was the playwright William Shakespeare's longest play and
among the most influential works to exist in English literature. The play dramatizes the poisonous
intents of the demonically brilliant king of Denmark, Claudius, a man so driven by greed and lust
for his brother's, King Hamlet's, throne, wife and supremacy that he commits the ultimate act of
fratricide, consequently inheriting the "primal eldest curse" of Cain and Abel. His toxic act affected
his relationships with numerous other characters, and eventually led to several of their demises.
Prince Hamlet, son of the late King Hamlet and Claudius' nephew and step–son, was one such
example of a character directly affected by Claudius' venomous ways; he became suicidal after his
father's unnatural death. This essay will examine the poisonous nature of King Claudius, the
inadvertent penalties of his deeds and Hamlet's extensive use of the trope of poison.
"In the complex web of human destinies, where so many lives are meshed intricately together, the
freely chosen actions of one individual may breed damaging, entirely unforeseeable effects in the
lives of countless anonymous others." (On Evil, Terry Eagleton, p. 33). Eagleton, a prominent
British literary theorist and critic, is essentially saying here that one's actions can have a profound
effect on many people and situations and can

Questioning the Sanity of Hamlet in Shakespeare's Hamlet,...
In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, we, as readers, increasingly question
the sanity of the protagonist, Hamlet, as the play continues. His seemingly psychotic banter with the
other characters of the play begins to convince us that Hamlet is, indeed, insane. Hamlet, however,
states, "How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself, as I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an
antic disposition on" (1.5.171). He specifically tells Horatio and Marcellus that he will be acting
mad, as a front. Hamlet has an exceptional grasp on mental philosophy and the uses and effects of
logic, more so than the other characters of the play. Because of this, Hamlet appears insane to
others, but in fact remains true to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Horatio and Hamlet see each other for the first time in a long while, they immediately are
excited. Hamlet, with his sometimes–sinister blunt remarks, goes on to tell of how close the
wedding and funeral are to each other. "Thrift, thrift, Horatio. The funeral baked meats did coldly
furnish forth the marriage tables" (1.2.179). However, on the opposite end of the spectrum of
Hamlet's commentary, his conversations with Polonius are rude and often pointed. In act 2 scene 2,
Hamlet makes fun of Polonius for being old and for his long–winded speeches, but does so with
such intelligence and awareness that Polonius fails to understand what Hamlet is saying at all,
thereby thinking Hamlet is simply mad. This differentiation between playful banter and slanderous
remarks show that Hamlet was incredibly mentally alert. More than just being aware of the logic in
a situation, Hamlet is mentally present enough to question even his own thought processes. Hamlet
is "in the position of the professional philosopher who criticizes his thoughts while he is thinking
them" (Davis 631). In Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy (3.1.58), he is questioning his own
thinking by debating with himself about whether or not people dream after death. It takes a sane
mind to be able to equally weigh the consequences of something as dark and intense as suicide.

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark
Every character in a story or play have their own personality and reason for many of their actions.
Each character reacts differently to other characters and situations. The writer creates these
characters with personality to fulfil their story with drama. The play "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark"
by William Shakespeare consists of many dramatic characters. The main character, Prince Hamlet, is
a troubled college student who is mourning the death of his father and disagreeing with the marriage
of his Uncle to his mother. Hamlet begins to seek revenge on his Uncle, and new step–father, but his
madness begins to show Hamlet's motives. Analyzing Hamlet's character by examining his
background, actions and motives gives the reader a much broader idea of who Hamlet actually is.
Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, who attends college, proving that he is a young adult. His parents,
Hamlet and Gertrude, were the King and Queen of Denmark. Hamlet saw that his parents had a real
love for each other and had always admired that. When his father, King Hamlet, dies Hamlet begins
to mourn. He now disapproves of his mother's marriage to his Uncle, now King Claudius. One night
with the help of a friend, Horatio, Hamlet had an encounter with King Hamlet's ghost. The ghost had
informed Hamlet that Claudius killed King Hamlet by pouring poison into his ear as he slept. The
ghost can be a symbolization of Claudius' karma because the secret murder was only known by

Hamlet Prince Of Denmark And The Awakening Analysis
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare was written in 1599 during the
Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era was also known as the "golden age" because of its
developments and changes. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was published in 1899, which was the
Victorian era. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and the Awakening were written many
years apart and also in different literary eras, but they share many similar themes. The Awakening
and Hamlet expresses love as a major theme. In both literary works, it is presented in the same
forms and different forms. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the theme of love is
expressed through many characters and relationships within the play. One way it is expressed is as
tragic love. Tragic love is expressed in King Hamlet and Gertrude. It is tragic love because their
relationship together was very short lived due to the temper of King Hamlets' brother, Claudius.
Another way that tragic love is expressed is through the relationship of Prince Hamlet and Ophelia.
That is exemplified as tragic love because Hamlet deeply loves Ophelia, but Ophelia's father Polonis
doesn't care for Hamlet and doesn't was his daughter to pursue him because he thinks that Hamlet
will just hurt her and since Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, Ophelia doesn't have the social
standing to be good enough as the potential queen since she is just a daughter of a courtier and
Polonis doesn't want his daughter hurt. This is also expressed as a tragic love because they cannot
end up together because while Hamlet is away in England Ophelia drowns, but hamlet doesn't find
out until he comes back and is spying on her funeral. The theme of tragic love can also be expressed
with Laertes and Ophelia, since Laertes is Ophelia's brother he wants to protect her and at Ophelia's
funeral Laertes asked the doctor "Must there no more be done?" and the doctor basically says we
can't do anything else sine she took her own life, but Laertes wants anything and everything possible
done to give her what he thinks she deserves and he knows that deserves more than that since he
refers to her as a "minist'ring angel...". The theme can also be expressed through the Gertrude and
Ophelia, since at

Is Polonius Justified In Hamlet
The Justified Murder "Polonius: O, I am slain!

Hamlet: Nay, I know not. Is it the King?

Hamlet: A bloody deed – almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king, and marry with his brother"
William Shakespeare writes in his tragedy Hamlet. The exchange takes place, set in 14th or 15th
century Denmark, right as Prince Hamlet thrusts his sword into his lover's father. With the intentions
of killing his possibly evil stepfather, hiding behind a curtain, Hamlet unintentionally murders
Polonius. At face value, this murder appears wrong and unjust. However, in Hamlet's time the
murder of Polonius is justified. This murder is condoned because Polonius helped Claudius seize the

Science Nordic reports "In 1347, a number of ships sailed into Italian ports with ... a cargo that
would affect nearly everyone in Europe: the plague. ... The Black Death travelled like [a] wildfire

plagues, became increasingly common. In two different scenes of Hamlet, King Claudius
acknowledges the existence of a deadly disease. The first recording states, "But, like the owner of a
foul disease, to keep it from divulging, let it feed even on the pith of Life." The second mention
quotes, "This sudden sending him away must seem deliberate pause: diseases desperate grown by

with death. Prince Hamlet is also noted stating, "I see the imminent death of twenty thousand men,
that, for a fantasy and trick of fame, go to their graves like beds." For a young prince to witness the
massacre of twenty thousand men is further proof of the normalization of death in the 14th and 15th

"The Fresh Prince of Denmark Yo Holla" Shakespeare's classic play Hamlet is about a young prince

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark
The drama Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a renowned play that was written by William
Shakespeare, it portrays love, tragedy, gluttony, and of course vengeance. Hamlet is a character that
was perhaps the best dramatic person to be created in such a play. He is, in fact, irresponsible,
however careful, polite, yet rude, affectionate, but cruel. People may, in fact, feel that this play is
troubling, or maybe overwhelming, on the other hand, William Shakespeare possibly wrote this play
over an incident that involved him and his life. Likewise, he may have written this particular drama
so that he can lead his spectators on. A great actor known as Mel Gibson said that the reason why

Meanwhile, Hamlet didn't know the true reason why he was praying. Thus, he lets his vicious uncle
live for now. Once he finds his uncle Claudius sinning again he will make sure he does get his
retribution. Hence, this is how Mel Gibson's point comes across because if Hamlet proceeded to kill
his uncle while praying, he would have been able to stop demises. Such as, Ophelia, Polonius,
Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, Gertrude, Laertes, and even Hamlet himself. All those lives could have
been avoided if Hamlet had the courage to kill Claudius when he had the chance. Polonius was a
fraud and very loyal to King Claudius but even though Hamlet knew that he wouldn't have
murdered him. If he identified who was the real person behind everything and of his mother
Gertrude; he would have exterminated Claudius. Hamlet thought that Polonius was his uncle
Claudius, and he stabs Polonius for not recognizing who was really behind the curtains. In fact, this
proves that Hamlet didn't kill Polonius on purpose because if he knew it was Claudius, then he
wouldn't have taken impulsive actions. This suggestion seems to show how right Gibson's idea was.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern could have been spared too because Hamlet didn't have a good reason
to murder them except for him to be saved himself. For Hamlet to stay alive, he had to kill those
men because they were there to damage his plans for vengeance. He ended

Aspects of Life in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles
In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Hamlet, has arrived
"from his university studies to find Claudius, his uncle, ruling Denmark and married to his mother,
Gertrude. Her remarriage within two months of his father's death has left Hamlet disillusioned,
confused, and suspicious about Claudius" (DiYanni 1394). These types of crimes do not only
happen in a person's imagination, or in a made–up play, but also in our society today. Our society is
just as immoral as Claudius and Gertrude. On the other hand, in Susan Gaspell's contemporary play,
Trifles, women are strong in character, protective of one another, and in charge of the situation, ...

and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people...he shall bear his iniquity" (Holy Bible,

relationship began as adults – he is now 46 and she 31. They were convicted of felony incest." Their
immorality is the same, if not worse than Gertrude and Claudius's immorality; however, Gertrude
and Claudius are not punished by the law but by Hamlet, himself, which is the only difference.
In addition, his mother is not the only one who is weak, in Hamlet's eyes; he considers all females
weak–minded and corruptible. He thinks if an adult woman like his mother has behaved in such a
way under the influence of her desires, then, a young woman could not be trusted by her husband,
and perhaps, this is why he later declines Ophelia's love, because Hamlet considers all women the
same. Ophelia is also a character who is depicted as frail, compliant, and emotional. She

William Shakespeare 's ' Hamlet Prince Of Denmark '
Hamlet Prince of Denmark is one of the key plays that gives the audience an insight into human
character. William Shakespeare chooses to focus on the influence of people's emotions on their
actions, rather than their rationality. In the play, the melancholic Prince Hamlet, chooses to avenge
his murdered father by killing his uncle who marries his mother and assumes the throne. Although
the plot is simplistic, it shows how Hamlet undergoes considerable emotional stress before exacting
his supposed revenge. Traditionally, audiences characterize Hamlet as a hero because of the
sympathy that his situation attracts. However, a deeper analysis reveals Hamlet as a selfish and

he has almost forgotten the face of Horatio. Although the statement is an exaggeration, it paints
Hamlet as a self–absorbed character who interacts with people in a rather impersonal sense. Given
his conversation with his mother and Claudius in the second scene of the first act, Hamlet is only
interested in interacting with people as an audience to his ideas.
Hamlet's self–indulgence contrasts with the simplicity and humanity demonstrated in Ophelia.
Ophelia is disinterested in philosophical contemplation and her life is constructed externally through
the love of people around her, especially Hamlet. Ophelia is uninfected with the pessimism of
Hamlet and tries to see people as made up of goodness rather than corruption. In the beginning,
although Ophelia is attracted to Hamlet, Polonius and Laertes warn her not to see Hamlet because
they believe he is selfish. When Ophelia converses with Hamlet, Hamlet renounces that he never
loved her in spite of the fact that he harbors a romantic attachment to the girl. The progression of the
play makes the audience discern that Hamlet is using the girl as an outlet for his rage against his
society. Hamlet is bound to distress Ophelia with his cynicism and the inability to appreciate love
from the people around him. In the end, Hamlet causes so much

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Polonius is shown to be the bumbling
counselor to King Claudius. He is considered a high class–citizen although he is below Hamlet and
the king. When examined from a Marxist perspective, Polonius is often treated poorly by Hamlet
because he is not in the same social rank as the prince; however, Polonius values his position as
counselor highly and goes through great measures to assure that he keeps his job because it
guarantees him a place in upper class society.
After developing a plan to find the root of Hamlet's madness with the king, Hamlet walks in, and
Polonius attempts to converse with him. At first, Hamlet's remarks seem insane, but his words are
laden with insults to Polonius. The prince comments that he agrees with his book which describes
"that old men have... a plentiful lack of wit," directing his jab at Polonius (II.II.193–195). His
mocking shows that class is very important in the kingdom; because Polonius is of lower rank than
Hamlet, Hamlet believes he has the right to insult Polonius. However, Polonius mistakes the affront
on his age and intelligences as further proof of the prince's insanity and leaves to exact his plan to
find the source of the prince's madness.

William Shakespeare is the creator of the play, "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark". This

Theme Of Hesitancy In Hamlet
Rebecca Kallios

Final Essays
Topic A.–Hamlet's theme of hesitancy and action In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of
Denmark, the protagonist, Prince Hamlet, is summoned by the ghost of his father to seek revenge
for his murder. Hamlet struggles to avenge his father's death as he is a complex character that is
more analytical and introspective, which is apparent through the first–person narrated soliloquys. As
the play progresses, Hamlet's inability to act adds a great weight and pressure upon his shoulders as
he wants to do right by his father as a noble son, yet he struggles to follow through. Eventually,
Hamlet does kill Claudius but as a result of his hesitancy several additional lives are lost. In the
revenge tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare develops the theme of hesitancy
through Hamlet's primary dilemma of avenging his father's murder. When Hamlet is first summoned
by the ghost to kill Claudius, Hamlet seems eager and determined. When the ghost calls for him to,
"Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (I.v.25), Hamlet exclaims, "Haste me to know't, that
I, with wings as swift/As meditation or the thoughts of love/May sweep to my revenge" (I.v.29–31).
When Hamlet talks to the ghost, he initially seems determined and ready to act, but with time to
think Hamlet loses his motivation. Hamlet questions whether the ghost is truly his father's spirit. The
importance of religion to Hamlet is apparent in his hesitation over the authenticity of the ghost.
Protestants at this time, such as Hamlet, questioned the reality of ghosts as they believed they were
the devil in disguise. In his Act II, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet expresses his concern over the reality
of the ghost when he states, "...The spirit that I have seen/May be the devil: and the devil hath
power/T' assume a pleasing shape" (II.ii.540–42). The power of God delays Hamlet's action, as he
doesn't want to unjustly kill a person. Another cause for Hamlet's delay is that he wants proof of
Claudius's guilt. Hamlet is distraught over the fact that his mother remarried so soon following her
husband's death, especially to her husband's brother. In the Act I, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet states

Hamlet as a Tragedy by William Shakespeare
1.1. Brief Introduction to Tragedy: Greek and English:
Elizabethan tragedy is traced back to Greek tragedy, since Greeks are said to have pioneered the
Western knowledge, be it Science, Arts, or Humanities–not necessarily Technology. The rich
contribution of Greek dramatists like Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and Aristophanes, is
noteworthy, towards the development of both Roman and English Drama. Though Roman Drama
could not thrive much as to invite the attention of Western audience, but English Drama excelled in
Elizabethan Age (due to the royal patronage), with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Shakespearean tragedy radiates with strong characterization–round, of
course–"Character is Destiny". Sixthly, Pity and Fear for Catharsis are perhaps common in both the
tradition of tragedies. And, lastly, the role of chorus (highlighting the past and intimating the future–
pivotal to the plot), being common in Greek and English Tragedies, make them closer to each other.
1.2. William Shakespeare's Hamlet:
Hamlet by William Shakespeare is believed to be the Crown of Tragedies because of its thematic
heterogeneity, stylistic features, rich characterization and appeal to Human Heart. A heart rending
tragedy that overwhelms with revenge, filial love and introspection–explicitly exposed in four major
Soliloquies by Hamlet, the prince. The said drama is equally fascinating to the students of history,
philosophy, psychology, literature and perhaps many more. Though, it has flaws in its plot being
unsystematic and less causative for the fulfilment of Organic Whole, yet the overall/final effect is
quite impressive from artistic and literary viewpoints.
Speeches of Polonius, Ophelia, Horatio, Claudius, and particularly the Hamlet's glorify the drama;
better illustrates and beautifies the tragedy, fulfilling the fundamentals of tragedy. Every character
contributes, shares and cares, and above all, involved in the main action–action being the soul of
drama! Internal and External Conflicts

Hamlet, The Prince Of Denmark
Hamlet is one of William Shakespeare 's most iconic plays about a tragedy. The play begins with
Hamlet mourning the death of his father and ends with a hefty amount of corpses. The cause of the
multiple deaths may be from Hamlet 's decisions that formed from questioning that which is
unknown to him. Throughout the Shakespearean play, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, as well as the
audience, are placed in a constant state of uncertainty. While Hamlet grieves his father 's death many
things start to unfold and create questions for the audience and Hamlet to queries such as the
existence of his father 's ghost, death and mortality and lastly more for the audience, the mental state
of Hamlet himself. The theme of uncertainty challenges Hamlet in his choices as well as how
uncertainty brings out deeper and more complex thoughts for him to explore. Through the lines that

Somehow, even in the short amount of time the people have had to morn the King's death, Claudius
convinces everyone that it is time to move on and put the past behind.
Gertrude is the mother of prince Hamlet and the new wife of his uncle. Her marriage to Claudius
largely accounts for the melancholy and cynicism of her son, who violently attacks her for her lust.
She appears with her new husband, the King, and he justifies their marriage to the court. Later she
tries to talk Hamlet out of dwelling on his father, and into seeing the new king as a father.
The Ghost of Hamlet's father is probably the most mysterious character of them all. It is fully
covered in armor and takes the form of the ex–King on Denmark. This spirit has twice appeared to
Marcellus and Bernardo (both castle guards) before they see it a third time in the presence of the

him how he was poisoned by Claudius, who had already seduced Hamlet's mother. The spirit then
enjoins Hamlet to revenge his murder, but leave his mother to the punishment of heaven. The ghost
appears again in act III, scene iv when Hamlet, having made no attempt to kill Claudius, seems to be
on the point of killing his mother. It is said by Rowe Flatter in his book "Hamlet's Father," that
Shakespeare himself acted the part of the Ghost of King Hamlet.

Fortinbras In Hamlet
Oftentimes, the minor characters in a theatrical work are essential in the development of the plot and
the depiction of other characters in the story. These at first seemingly insignificant characters are
utilized in the hopes of revealing and elucidating the personalities of the people associated with
them. In Hamlet, young Fortinbras is the prince of Norway who serves multiple purposes throughout
the story. The idea most important to him throughout the duration play is the avengement of his
father's death and the process of bringing honor back to his father, in order to do this, we wants to
take revenge upon the kingdom of Denmark. This is similar to Hamlet's goal of avenging his own
father's death and murdering Claudius. One purpose Fortinbras ... Show more content on

At the start of the scene, Fortinbras is attempting to pass through Danish land in order to conquer a
Polish territory. When Fortinbras speaks during this scene, he is forceful and assertive, showing his
determination for bringing honor to his father and winning back the land. Unlike Hamlet, he is very
persistent in his goal and he wants to avenge his father's death and fight his battle as soon as he
possibly can. He sends a captain to the king in order to ask permission for this process. While on
this mission, the man meets up with Hamlet and has a conversation with him, discussing the land
that belongs to Poland and the fact that it is useless but they are still planning on conquering it.
Hamlet realizes that Fortinbras is going to war over a useless piece of territory in order to uphold the
honor of his father. Hamlet states, "Witness this army of such mass and charge / Led by a delicate
and tender prince, / Whose spirit with divine ambition puffed / Makes mouths at the invisible event,
/ Exposing what is mortal and unsure / To all that fortune, death, and danger dare, / Even for an
eggshell." The audience is able to see how high Fortinbras holds honor and glory through Hamlet's
eyes and Hamlet begins to admire the Prince of Norway. His admiration stems from the fact that
rather than spending so much time thinking about the consequences of taking action upon his
revenge, Fortinbras makes a decision and immediately begins to pursue this

Hamlet Craziness
Hamlet is based off of jealousy, revenge, and tragedy. Prince Hamlet, Son of the deceased King
Hamlet has become depressed. Coming home to from Germany because his father has died, he is
startled to find that his mother has already remarried. The queen has remarried to Prince Hamlet's
Uncle Claudius who is now the king of Denmark. Hamlet finds their marriage to be "foul incest"
(https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/h/hamlet/play–summary). With all that's happened, a ghost
has appeared in the presence of Bernardo, Marcellus and a visitor of to Denmark, Horatio. The ghost
then proceeds to tell young Hamlet that he was poisoned and murdered by his brother, Claudius.
Prince Hamlet takes matters into his own hands and stages a play to see if Claudius will have a
negative reaction proving he's guilty. With trial, error and sacrificing a few lives, Hamlet is finally
successful in avenging his father by stabbing Claudius at the toll of losing his own life. He then
passes the throne to Fortinbras in his last living moments. The ghost effects action by convincing
Hamlet to kill Claudius thus giving Fortinbras the throne, and theme through revenge and avenging
his father similar to Fortinbras's motivation.
The ghost affects action by appearing in the middle of night in Denmark to warn Hamlet about
Claudius, the new king of Denmark. When the ghost first appears he brings the conflict or issue by
saying "A serpent stung

Ghost Of King Hamlet
When people do not get their way, some things do not turn out to well. Someone may have been at
work all day and want to come home to peace and quiet. Once the person gets home, they see an
everyone else in the house is making nothing but noise. There may be a project that someone is
trying to overcome but the project does not turn out the way that the person plans. A test can be
coming up and the person could study for weeks. When the test is over, the person finds out they
have failed. Frustration is formed from a spirit, suspicion, and unclear answers in the second
soliloquy of William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet." At times people may think that their eyes are
deceiving them. Shakespeare creates the atmosphere of the dark kingdom, Denmark. Marcellus and
Bernardo sees the ghost of King Hamlet first. Marcellus and Bernardo was so surprised at the image,
they run to get Horatio. "What art thou that usurp'st this time of night together with that fair and

After the ghost of King Hamlet disappears from talking with Prince Hamlet, Prince Hamlet recites
his second soliloquy. Prince Hamlet notices how everything the ghost of King Hamlet said was
correct. The ghost of Denmark tells Prince Hamlet, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life now
wears his crown." (1.5.40–41). Once finding out how King Hamlet died, Prince Hamlet goes
berserk. The ghost of King Hamlet brings up how Claudius, the Uncle, is now King of Denmark.
Prince Hamlet does not know what to do with the information he was given. Prince Hamlet was
instructed by the ghost of King Hamlet to seek revenge for King Hamlet's death. He starts planning
the revenge by plotting a play called The Mousetrap. The play recites the death of King Hamlet.
Claudius reaction to the play is suspicious. It was outrageous how Hamlet's Uncle suddenly took

Descriptive Language In Hamlet

Into Hamlet
The utilization of descriptive language is important for the writer to entertain, persuade and teleport
the reader into their work. Descriptive use and imagery allow the reader to experience the setting,
sound, taste, and mood as if they can live through it. Which takes us to Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
Not only does he utilize exceptional details and imagery throughout the play between the characters,
but the way he uses word allows us to put ourselves into the play as if we can feel what they feel. It
also allows us to experience and go through the play as if we are in it also. So in this paper, I would
like to focus on a few major moments where I believe Shakespeare descriptive language is the
strongest. The first example of how Shakespeare uses descriptions and imagery in his play was
showing how Hamlet expresses himself over his mother's remarriage. Hamlet states "Thing rank and
gross in nature" with that it is obvious he finds it disgusted that his mother was about to remarry to
her dead husband's brother. Hamlet also said that " she would hang on him as if increase of appetite
grown", making it somehow seem as if he saw his mother as an animal feeding off of attention, love,
power and just desperate for a companion. if he did not opinionated his thought on this remarriage
enough, he verbally expressed to his mother, "you have my father much offended" which basically
tells her that when she married her uncle it was offensive on his deceased father. Another way
Shakespeare used descriptive language was when writing about madness, whether acting, looking or
actually going insane. One example was helmet acting crazy and his appearance was extremely
unappealing. "With his doublet, all unbraced, no hat upon his head, his stockings fouled," which
Ophelia explained, was the look of a madman compared to his usual well dressed and neat look.
Another example is when Ophelia commences to lose her mind after her father's death. Ophelia
seemed to have hit rock bottom, she would sing at random moments as if he could only
communicate her feelings with songs. "By heaven, thy madness shall be paid with weight," said
Laertes as he noted that Ophelia was so far gone as if beyond

Cause And Effect In Act 1 Of Hamlet

  • 1. Cause And Effect In Act 1 Of Hamlet In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, the opening act introduces many characters to the audience. One of the main characters, eventually the antagonist of the play, is the recently crowned King Claudius. Claudius takes the throne of Denmark shortly after the passing of his brother King Hamlet. As the play develops, the audience comes to find that the strong intelligent ruler that assures Denmark's safety at the beginning of the act is not the man he pretends to be. In the eyes of the audience, Claudius goes from the calm and collected King of Denmark to an adulterous murderer, but he does not reveal this to the people of Denmark. Claudius first appears in the play in Act I, Scene 2 as he addresses his court about the death of his brother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Claudius addresses the court, he mentions his newly acquired son Prince Hamlet. Hamlet responds to this aside uttering, "A little more than kin and less than kind" (1.2.67). Hamlet finds his uncle's marriage to his mother to follow much too close to the passing of his father. Overall, Hamlet finds the marriage to be unethical and wrong. He is saying that his relationship with Claudius has too many family ties, and this draws the attention of the audience. Hamlet's words make the audience think again about the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude. The audience may wonder if Claudius had only married Gertrude to gain power, or if he had acquired feelings for Gertrude while King Hamlet was still alive. The audience receives their answers later in Act I when Prince Hamlet talks to the ghost of his father. The ghost of King Hamlet warns Prince Hamlet that his death was no accident. He tells Prince Hamlet that he had been murdered, and that "the serpent that did sting thy father's life / Now wears his crown" (1.5.46–47). The ghost then continues, and refers to Claudius as "that incestuous, that adulterate beast" (1.5.49). The audience viewpoint on Claudius drastically changes after Prince Hamlet's talk with his father's ghost. Instead of being a calm and sturdy leader of Denmark, he is now an adulterate murderer. ... • 3. Essay on Revenge in Hamlet Revenge in Hamlet It is natural human instinct for a son to feel offended over the death of his father. So is the instance of the two young princes, both spurned by the sudden death of King Hamlet toward destinies of avenging fallen fathers, which emerge to permit comparisons in Shakespeare's great tragedy Hamlet. In the first act of the play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and Fortinbras, Prince of Norway, both are fatherless heirs whose uncles occupy the throne of their respected countries. Both princes seek revenge for the events relating to the death of their fathers while their uncles and kings oppose their nephews, plotting to accomplish their own objectives. However, by what is learned in the brief sidelined accounts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whereas Fortinbras directs his vengeance toward a target outside his family and country, Hamlet's enemy is exposed within the very core of Denmark, his own family. As a ghost from the grave, King Hamlet returns to reveal to his son that Claudius, the king's very brother caused his death by pouring poison into his ear while he slept. This earth quaking news is compounded with the recent marriage of now King Claudius to Hamlet's short mourning mother, Gertrude. If the offenses of treason, parricide murder, and adultery were not enough to incite Hamlet to avenge his father, the ghost gives a fourth reason. This unexpected death was most untimely for King Hamlet because he had not repented for the sins he had accumulated throughout his life; thus, a sentence of suffering in purgatory withholds his entrance to heaven. Unlike Prince Fortinbras's goal of seeking retribution by recovering what was lost upon his father's death, the ghost of King Hamlet calls his son to avenge him for deeds and responsibilities that remained even after his life left his body. For "this most foul, strange, and unnatural"(1.5.29) murder Prince Hamlet pledges to avenge his father by killing his uncle, king, and mother's husband, Claudius, without harming the Queen. By gathering "a list of lawless resolutes for food and diet to some enterprise that hath a stomach in 't, which is no other..." Fortinbras sought to accomplish ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is widely known to be considered as a philosophy or drama based play, but moral center is universally acknowledged. The characters in Hamlet persistently struggle with the power of their consciences, as they are tempted to satisfy their innermost desires. Hamlet, The Prince of Denmark, is bestowed upon the strenuous task of taking justice into his hands to avenge his father's murder. Through this, complications of morality is put on display and is the overall moral center in Hamlet which is shown in his conflict of the soul between honour and conscience; emphasizing the moral controversy regarding revenge, ... Furthermore, he assumed that it would be unjust to kill him and send him to heaven without true vengeance. This describes his indecisive conscience. Moreover, Hamlet displays honour in his dealings with Ophelia. He tries to warn her away from him by appearing to her in a state of disarray and acting rather psychotic. This is evident when he speaks to her for the last time; "Get thee to a nunnery: why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest; but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at my back than I have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. Venegas 2 What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all believe none of us. Go thy ways to a nunnery," (3.1.131–139). Through this, morality is put on display and is the overall moral center in Hamlet which is shown in his conflict of the soul between honour and conscience. Hamlet's questioning of life is a part of the moral center in Hamlet which promotes his virtue, perseverance, and 'gentle human' qualities. • 7. The Genius of Hamlet, the Very Sane Prince of Denmark... The Genius of Hamlet, the Very Sane Prince of Denmark Hamlet in Shakepeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is often seen as a lunatic. Lucid and ingenious, Prince Hamlet falls into a state of emotional turmoil, but he is never insane. Hamlet feigns madness to reveal his anguish concerning the two women he used to love – his mother Gertrude and his lover Ophelia. To escape estrangement from his countrymen, Hamlet appears to waver between madness and sanity. And, to avoid moral estrangement, the Prince plans on revenging his father's death under the guise of madness. While he muses to himself about Gertrude's conduct, Hamlet hears Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo arrive. Hamlet quickly says, "But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue" (I, ii. 159). He realizes that it is best for him to keep his thoughts and plans to himself, because to do otherwise is to breach the rules of hierarchy. Soon, Hamlet does appear "mad" in his appearance by looking unkempt, and Queen Gertrude attributes this to her husband's death and to her "o'er–hasty marriage" to Claudius (II, ii. 56–57). Thus, when Hamlet rebukes her in public and in private, Queen Gertrude does not become angry. Instead, she feels sorry for him and feels somewhat guilty about her remarriage. When Hamlet suggests for her to take a look in the mirror, Gertrude admits that Hamlet has "turn'st [her] eyes into [her] very soul" (III, iv. 79). Had she thought that Hamlet was sane, Gertrude might not have been as tender towards her son as she was. Hamlet at this point is sane but also very bitter. He says, "I will speak daggers to her, but use none" (III, ii. 366). A madman would have used a real dagger and carried out the rash action of murdering his own mother. When Hamlet speaks to the ghost in Gertrude's room, the Queen believes that her son has truly gone mad. Gertrude pities Hamlet, but even if the ghost only exists in Hamlet's imagination, the apparition functions as his conscience. The ghost reminds Hamlet not to stray from his goal, which ... • 9. Examples Of Something Is Rotten In The Past In Hamlet Stuck in the Past "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4.90). These words describe the situation of Denmark in William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet after the death of its title character, King Hamlet. His son – also named Hamlet – returns home to witness his father's funeral, but soon descends on a quest for revenge against his father's murderer. The death of the Danish king and his son's spirit of vengeance set off a chain of events that ultimately leads to the death of Prince Hamlet, the collapse of the royal family, and the fall of Denmark itself in the hands of Norway. In the beginning, as Prince Hamlet goes to speak to the ghost of his father, one of the royal guards comments that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prince Hamlet most closely embodies this during his encounter with his father's ghost. When the ghost appears, it beckons for Hamlet to follow him, and when his guards Marcellus and Horatio advise him to resist the ghost's intentions, Hamlet replies that "my fate cries out and makes each petty artere in this body as hardy as the Nemean lion's nerve" (1.4.81–83). After hearing this, Marcellus gives Horatio the crucial statement that "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4.90). Prince Hamlet's determination to follow the ghost – citing it as his fate – leads to Marcellus propelling his observation of an underlying problem in the state of Denmark. By using the ghost (commonly used in media to signify the dead or the past) and following it with Marcellus's commentary soon after, Shakespeare uses symbolism and context to describe how humanity's attachment to the past is dangerous. In the next scene, the ghost tells Hamlet that the king was killed by Claudius poisoning his ear, also commanding his son to "let not the royal bed of Denmark be a couch for luxury and damned incest" (1.5.83–84), and ending the conversation with the words "adieu, adieu, adieu. Remember me" (1.5.91). The young Hamlet takes this command to an extreme, declaring that "thy commandment alone shall live within the book and context of my brain, unmixed with ... His criticisms of society in his works have passed the "test of time," and still are as significant today as they were when they were first written. There are many similarities in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, and Trifles by Susan Glaspell, written in the early 20th century, that further support the timelessness of Shakespeare's works. Despite the fact that Shakespeare's Hamlet was written many centuries ago, his analyses of certain values in society are not only similar to those portrayed in the much more recent play, Trifles, but also ... Furthermore, in Trifles, the mistreatment that Mrs. Wright has endured from her husband, which has turned her into a different person from her former self, Minnie Forster, is often overlooked. In fact, John Wright has "extinguished" "the light" (Boyle 57) in Mrs. Wright's eyes, much like the Astronomer has done to his wife in "Astronomer's Wife." The little things around the house, especially the bird that the women find dead, with its neck broken, symbolize Mrs. Wright's mistreatment. According to D. C. Browning in Dictionary of Literary Biography, "the bird is a symbol for all that was Mrs. Wright, and its death represents the death of Mrs. Wright's spirit." Similarly, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark women are also put in inferior roles. One example of this is Ophelia, and how her brother, Laertes, and father, Polonius, take many of the decisions in her life. Polonius often dictates her life by telling her what she cannot do. This occurs when Polonius decides he does not want his daughter near Hamlet, and orders Ophelia to stay away from him. Later in the play, Hamlet approaches Ophelia and she immediately reports to Polonius saying, "No, my good lord, but, as you did command, / ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Hamlet Death And Decay Essay Exposing Evil in Hamlet through Death and Decay Death and decay undeniably plays a significant role on how Shakespeare's play Hamlet unfolds. The play itself makes use of aspects of death and decay to expose Denmark's state of demoralization following the king's sudden death. Death and decay reveals and highlights betrayal, corruption and unacceptable leadership in the state of Denmark. First of all, death and decay was used to expose betrayal in Denmark through Claudius' treachery. Claudius is clearly referred to by King Hamlet's apparition as a serpent, a serpent which "stung me (King Hamlet) so the whole ear of Denmark is by a forged process of my death" (1.5.772–74). Serpents or snakes are often closely associated to betrayal and deception especially in religious texts such as the bible, but more specifically the story and Adam and Eve. Claudius' actions openly proves that he really is a serpent considering the fact that he betrayed Denmark by poisoning King Hamlet and deceiving everyone around him that King Hamlet died of natural causes in order to solicit the crown (1.5.776–77). Claudius really is a substantial problem for Denmark, he killed the true king and stole his wife there really is no guarantee that he would not attack and also kill those who choose to oppose him and his orders. Death in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet Essay "So shall you hear of carnal, bloody, and unnatural acts, of accidental judgments, casual slaughters, of deaths put on by cunning and forced cause," (Hamlet, Act V, Scene 2, Lines 381–384). So says Horatio, best friend of Prince Hamlet in the final few lines of the play. He speaks these words after the deaths of Hamlet, Claudius, King of Denmark, Gertrude, Queen of Denmark, and Laertes, son of Polonius. Also dead are Hamlet, King of Denmark, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, former friends of Hamlet, Polonius, councilor to the King, and Ophelia, daughter of Polonius. The ghost goes on to say, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown," (Hamlet, Act I, Scene 5, Lines 38–39). It is at this point that Hamlet realises that his father's murderer was his uncle, Claudius. Hamlet swears to have revenge. This sets up the circumstances that cause the remainder of the action in the play. One of the most interesting deaths in Hamlet is the death of Ophelia. Ophelia was the daughter of Polonius, councilor to the king. However, she was also Prince Hamlet's girlfriend. She died by drowning in a river. It is most likely that she committed suicide, though there was never any evidence to that effect, and it is impossible to say for sure. The chain of events leading to her death came from two different directions. One cause of her apparent suicide could have been Hamlet's madness. They had been lovers, but during the time prior to her death he became very cold toward her and bordered on insanity. In one brief soliloquy she says the following: And I, of ladies most deject and wretched, That sucked the honey of his musicked vows, Now see that noble and most sovereign reason Like sweet bells jangled, out of time and harsh, That unmatched form and feature of blown youth Blasted with ecstasy. O, woe is me T' have seen what I have seen, see what I see! Hamlet, Act III, Scene 1, Lines 158–164 She is lamenting the fact

Her loss of sanity leads to her ultimate death, which furthers the corruption of Denmark. Disease inevitably leads to greater acts of corruption. The play, Hamlet, is filled with great acts of corruption that result from the many diseased mentalities existing in the Kingdom of Denmark. In the early scenes of the play, after seeing the ghost of King Hamlet, Marcellus reflects on the condition of the country. The guard says, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," (Act I, iv, Line 100). Marcellus infers to the reader that the appearance or apparition of the ghost of King Hamlet means that there must be extreme corruption mounting in the country. If it were not for the diseased mental state of Claudius, King Hamlet would not have been murdered nor would he come to speak to the guards of the kingdom. After the death of his sister, Laeretes, the son of the king's late advisor, speaks to King Claudius about seeking justice for the deaths of Ophelia and his father, Polonius. Prince Hamlet, a university student, is an extremely philosophical and thoughtful character. • 32. The Great Prince Of Denmark, Hamlet, By William Shakespeare The Elizabethan era consisted of a time where women were viewed as minorities in society and were often thought to have been devised in the weaker image of men. Being given limited political, economical and social freedom led to their diminutive role in literature. In contrast to this degrading trend, Shakespeare introduced femininity in a new light. He created female characters who contradict the stereotypes of his time, impacting both the plot and surrounding characters of his plays. One of his most famous tragedies, Hamlet, revolves around the great prince of Denmark, Hamlet, who encounters the apparition of his deceased father, the former king. The ghost asks that Hamlet seeks revenge upon Claudius, his uncle and new father, for it was he who murdered him and seduced the queen, as a plan to gain top status in society. Faking madness, Hamlet strives to kill Claudius, and although successful, many other lives, including his own, pass in the meanwhile . Ophelia, the daughter of the king's top advisors, finds herself caught in the middle of this situation as people assume Hamlet has gone mad out of pure love for her. Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, soon faces the consequences of participating in her husband's murder. Despite the women in Shakespeare's Hamlet being classified as fragile and submissive, staying true to the beliefs of the time period, they are exceptionally significant figures in the progression of the plot in this bloody tragedy. • 34. William Shakespeare 's Hamlet In William Shakespeare's Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, Ophelia is a passive woman. She went through her life just letting whatever happened to her happen. Her father, Polonius, was a controlling father, like most fathers of that time. Her boyfriend, Prince Hamlet, is insane and cruel. With these two men controlling her life more than anyone else it made her rely on both of them being there. Ophelia grew to rely on people telling her what to do. Ophelia's mental stability deteriorates because Hamlet rejects her and her father is killed by Hamlet. Ophelia begins acting erratically right before her death. Ophelia, having relied on her father and Hamlet completely, needed them to be there for her, and when they were not she went insane. • 36. Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, By William Shakespeare The famous tragedy entitled Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often abbreviated to Hamlet and written at the turn of the seventeenth century, was the playwright William Shakespeare's longest play and among the most influential works to exist in English literature. The play dramatizes the poisonous intents of the demonically brilliant king of Denmark, Claudius, a man so driven by greed and lust for his brother's, King Hamlet's, throne, wife and supremacy that he commits the ultimate act of fratricide, consequently inheriting the "primal eldest curse" of Cain and Abel. His toxic act affected his relationships with numerous other characters, and eventually led to several of their demises. Prince Hamlet, son of the late King Hamlet and Claudius' nephew and step–son, was one such example of a character directly affected by Claudius' venomous ways; he became suicidal after his father's unnatural death. This essay will examine the poisonous nature of King Claudius, the inadvertent penalties of his deeds and Hamlet's extensive use of the trope of poison. "In the complex web of human destinies, where so many lives are meshed intricately together, the freely chosen actions of one individual may breed damaging, entirely unforeseeable effects in the lives of countless anonymous others." In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, we, as readers, increasingly question the sanity of the protagonist, Hamlet, as the play continues. His seemingly psychotic banter with the other characters of the play begins to convince us that Hamlet is, indeed, insane. Hamlet, however, states, "How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself, as I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on" (1.5.171). He specifically tells Horatio and Marcellus that he will be acting mad, as a front. Because of this, Hamlet appears insane to others, but in fact remains true to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Horatio and Hamlet see each other for the first time in a long while, they immediately are excited. Hamlet, with his sometimes–sinister blunt remarks, goes on to tell of how close the wedding and funeral are to each other. "Thrift, thrift, Horatio. The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables" (1.2.179). However, on the opposite end of the spectrum of Hamlet's commentary, his conversations with Polonius are rude and often pointed. In act 2 scene 2, Hamlet makes fun of Polonius for being old and for his long–winded speeches, but does so with such intelligence and awareness that Polonius fails to understand what Hamlet is saying at all, thereby thinking Hamlet is simply mad. This differentiation between playful banter and slanderous remarks show that Hamlet was incredibly mentally alert. More than just being aware of the logic in a situation, Hamlet is mentally present enough to question even his own thought processes. Hamlet is "in the position of the professional philosopher who criticizes his thoughts while he is thinking them" (Davis 631). In Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy (3.1.58), he is questioning his own thinking by debating with himself about whether or not people dream after death. It takes a sane mind to be able to equally weigh the consequences of something as dark and intense as suicide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

May one be pardon 'd and retain the offence? (III.iii.50–55) Meanwhile, Hamlet didn't know the true reason why he was praying. Thus, he lets his vicious uncle live for now. Once he finds his uncle Claudius sinning again he will make sure he does get his retribution. Hence, this is how Mel Gibson's point comes across because if Hamlet proceeded to kill his uncle while praying, he would have been able to stop demises. Such as, Ophelia, Polonius, Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, Gertrude, Laertes, and even Hamlet himself. All those lives could have been avoided if Hamlet had the courage to kill Claudius when he had the chance. Polonius was a fraud and very loyal to King Claudius but even though Hamlet knew that he wouldn't have murdered him. If he identified who was the real person behind everything and of his mother Gertrude; he would have exterminated Claudius. Hamlet thought that Polonius was his uncle Claudius, and he stabs Polonius for not recognizing who was really behind the curtains. In fact, this proves that Hamlet didn't kill Polonius on purpose because if he knew it was Claudius, then he wouldn't have taken impulsive actions. This suggestion seems to show how right Gibson's idea was. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern could have been spared too because Hamlet didn't have a good reason to murder them except for him to be saved himself. For Hamlet to stay alive, he had to kill those men because they were there to damage his plans for vengeance. He ended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This act of deception which grants Hamlet vengeance over his old friends serves to foreshadow the revenge that Hamlet is to bring over King Claudius. It also predicts the death of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in which a British Ambassador informs Denmark of after the murder scene in act 5 even though they actually died before the death scene in Denmark, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead"(5.2.372). Shakespeare allowed for this to happen so that he could essentially make it seem that they all die at once. • 52. Aspects of Life in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles... Aspects of Life in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Hamlet, has arrived "from his university studies to find Claudius, his uncle, ruling Denmark and married to his mother, Gertrude. Her remarriage within two months of his father's death has left Hamlet disillusioned, confused, and suspicious about Claudius" (DiYanni 1394). These types of crimes do not only happen in a person's imagination, or in a made–up play, but also in our society today. Our society is just as immoral as Claudius and Gertrude. On the other hand, in Susan Gaspell's contemporary play, Trifles, women are strong in character, protective of one another, and in charge of the situation, ... Their immorality is the same, if not worse than Gertrude and Claudius's immorality; however, Gertrude and Claudius are not punished by the law but by Hamlet, himself, which is the only difference. In addition, his mother is not the only one who is weak, in Hamlet's eyes; he considers all females weak–minded and corruptible. He thinks if an adult woman like his mother has behaved in such a way under the influence of her desires, then, a young woman could not be trusted by her husband, and perhaps, this is why he later declines Ophelia's love, because Hamlet considers all women the same. Ophelia is also a character who is depicted as frail, compliant, and emotional. She automatically does what the males in the play, her father, Polonius, and her brother, Laertes tell her, and ... • 54. William Shakespeare 's ' Hamlet Prince Of Denmark ' Hamlet Prince of Denmark is one of the key plays that gives the audience an insight into human character. William Shakespeare chooses to focus on the influence of people's emotions on their actions, rather than their rationality. In the play, the melancholic Prince Hamlet, chooses to avenge his murdered father by killing his uncle who marries his mother and assumes the throne. Although the plot is simplistic, it shows how Hamlet undergoes considerable emotional stress before exacting his supposed revenge. Given his conversation with his mother and Claudius in the second scene of the first act, Hamlet is only interested in interacting with people as an audience to his ideas. Hamlet's self–indulgence contrasts with the simplicity and humanity demonstrated in Ophelia. Ophelia is disinterested in philosophical contemplation and her life is constructed externally through the love of people around her, especially Hamlet. Ophelia is uninfected with the pessimism of Hamlet and tries to see people as made up of goodness rather than corruption. In the beginning, although Ophelia is attracted to Hamlet, Polonius and Laertes warn her not to see Hamlet because they believe he is selfish. When Ophelia converses with Hamlet, Hamlet renounces that he never loved her in spite of the fact that he harbors a romantic attachment to the girl. The progression of the play makes the audience discern that Hamlet is using the girl as an outlet for his rage against his society. • 56. William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Polonius is shown to be the bumbling counselor to King Claudius. He is considered a high class–citizen although he is below Hamlet and the king. When examined from a Marxist perspective, Polonius is often treated poorly by Hamlet because he is not in the same social rank as the prince; however, Polonius values his position as counselor highly and goes through great measures to assure that he keeps his job because it guarantees him a place in upper class society. After developing a plan to find the root of Hamlet's madness with the king, Hamlet walks in, and Polonius attempts to converse with him. At first, Hamlet's remarks seem insane, but his words are laden with insults to Polonius. The prince comments that he agrees with his book which describes "that old men have... a plentiful lack of wit," directing his jab at Polonius (II.II.193–195). His mocking shows that class is very important in the kingdom; because Polonius is of lower rank than Hamlet, Hamlet believes he has the right to insult Polonius. However, Polonius mistakes the affront on his age and intelligences as further proof of the prince's insanity and leaves to exact his plan to find the source of the prince's madness. • 60. Theme Of Hesitancy In Hamlet Rebecca Kallios 12/15/17 Final Essays Topic A.–Hamlet's theme of hesitancy and action In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Prince Hamlet, is summoned by the ghost of his father to seek revenge for his murder. Hamlet struggles to avenge his father's death as he is a complex character that is more analytical and introspective, which is apparent through the first–person narrated soliloquys. As the play progresses, Hamlet's inability to act adds a great weight and pressure upon his shoulders as he wants to do right by his father as a noble son, yet he struggles to follow through. Eventually, Hamlet does kill Claudius but as a result of his hesitancy several additional lives are lost. In the revenge tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare develops the theme of hesitancy through Hamlet's primary dilemma of avenging his father's murder. When Hamlet is first summoned by the ghost to kill Claudius, Hamlet seems eager and determined. When the ghost calls for him to, "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (I.v.25), Hamlet exclaims, "Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift/As meditation or the thoughts of love/May sweep to my revenge" (I.v.29–31). When Hamlet talks to the ghost, he initially seems determined and ready to act, but with time to think Hamlet loses his motivation. Hamlet questions whether the ghost is truly his father's spirit. The importance of religion to Hamlet is apparent in his hesitation over the authenticity of the ghost. Protestants at this time, such as Hamlet, questioned the reality of ghosts as they believed they were the devil in disguise. In his Act II, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet expresses his concern over the reality of the ghost when he states, "...The spirit that I have seen/May be the devil: and the devil hath power/T' assume a pleasing shape" (II.ii.540–42). The power of God delays Hamlet's action, as he doesn't want to unjustly kill a person. Another cause for Hamlet's delay is that he wants proof of Claudius's guilt. Hamlet is distraught over the fact that his mother remarried so soon following her husband's death, especially to her husband's brother. In the Act I, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet states that ... Brief Introduction to Tragedy: Greek and English: Elizabethan tragedy is traced back to Greek tragedy, since Greeks are said to have pioneered the Western knowledge, be it Science, Arts, or Humanities–not necessarily Technology. The rich contribution of Greek dramatists like Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and Aristophanes, is noteworthy, towards the development of both Roman and English Drama. • 78. Descriptive Language In Hamlet Dora Rosales En102 Online Into Hamlet The utilization of descriptive language is important for the writer to entertain, persuade and teleport the reader into their work. Descriptive use and imagery allow the reader to experience the setting, sound, taste, and mood as if they can live through it. Which takes us to Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Not only does he utilize exceptional details and imagery throughout the play between the characters, but the way he uses word allows us to put ourselves into the play as if we can feel what they feel. It also allows us to experience and go through the play as if we are in it also. So in this paper, I would like to focus on a few major moments where I believe Shakespeare descriptive language is the strongest. The first example of how Shakespeare uses descriptions and imagery in his play was showing how Hamlet expresses himself over his mother's remarriage. Hamlet states "Thing rank and gross in nature" with that it is obvious he finds it disgusted that his mother was about to remarry to her dead husband's brother. Hamlet also said that " she would hang on him as if increase of appetite grown", making it somehow seem as if he saw his mother as an animal feeding off of attention, love, power and just desperate for a companion. if he did not opinionated his thought on this remarriage enough, he verbally expressed to his mother, "you have my father much offended" which basically tells her that when she married her uncle it was offensive on his deceased father. Another way Shakespeare used descriptive language was when writing about madness, whether acting, looking or actually going insane. One example was helmet acting crazy and his appearance was extremely unappealing. "With his doublet, all unbraced, no hat upon his head, his stockings fouled," which Ophelia explained, was the look of a madman compared to his usual well dressed and neat look. Another example is when Ophelia commences to lose her mind after her father's death. Ophelia seemed to have hit rock bottom, she would sing at random moments as if he could only communicate her feelings with songs. "By heaven, thy madness shall be paid with weight," said Laertes as he noted that Ophelia was so far gone as if beyond ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
