THE PEQUOT WAR RECONSIDERED The English pioneers of Connecticut and the Pequots
battled what is presently known as the Pequot Wars. One of the two administrators for the
Englishmen was Captain John Underhill. After the war, he soon distributed his record of the threats
between the Pequots and the English pioneers, titled News from America. While both Underhill and
Bradford portray the occasions comparably, Bradford neglects to bring up or answer the issue of
roughness against the Pequots, while Captain Underhill raises the issue and endeavors to reply to the
charge.
The Pequot War was battled in 1637. It included the Pequot Indians and the Pilgrim's pioneers
Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This war was the climax of various clashes between the

The Pequot Tribe and the English
The Pequots are a native tribe from South Eastern Connecticut. They traveled for hunting and
gathering during spring and summer when it was warmer. During the Winter, they stayed cozied up
in their villages. They first met the English in 1660 and the movement caused many problems
between the two people. In fact, the first contact between the English and Pequot tribe caused an
outbreak of sicknesses such as small pox unto the Pequot. The Pequot population shrunk to around
3000 from around 13,000 in size. This made many leaders grow sick and die off, allowing the
English to have more dominance. The Pequot did not like the difference in power and rebelled,
causing the Pequot war. The war only lasted 1 year but had many events and many consequences,
mainly to the Pequot. The war ended with the 1638 Treaty of Hartford.

It was to be her marriage to colonist John Rolfe in 1614 that would bring about a temporary peace
between the natives and colonists but it only lasted until her death in 1617. Powhatan died in 1618,
and was succeeded by his brother Opechancanough who despised the settlers who were bringing
disease and taking Indian lands. On March 22, 1622, Indians attacked the colonists killing 347 of
them, one fourth of the colonist's population. The colonists countered by burning the natives'
cornfields and attacking their villages. During peace talks in April 1623, the colonists served the
Indians poisoned wine, killing two hundred of them. The English would be ferocious in the next
nine years of war with the natives, and the Indian's (whose tribes were separate, not united) stood
little chance against them.
In 1620, religious separatists called Pilgrims (Protestants who separated from the church of
England), and non–separatists would board the Mayflower and set sail from England to colonize the
new world; there were 102 men, women, and children in all. The new colony was to be called
Plymouth, formerly the site a Wampanoag village that had recently been decimated by disease.
Although the newcomers found an abandoned cornfield and buried baskets of corn, it would not be
enough to feed the hungry colonists during the first winter and nearly half of them would die. Early
the next spring, two English–speaking natives arrived to the settlement.

Ever since Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas in 1492, conflicts with Native
Americans raised due to the overtaking of their land. Prior to European settlement Indian tribes were
located across North America. Horses allowed Indians to migrate with their main source of food, the
buffalo, increasing their amount of land territory. As European settlers arrived on the east coast,
Natives from that area began to move to the west coast often causing inter–tribe conflicts. Conflicts
between natives and settling Europeans also arose because of the colonies need for more land which
resulted in them following the same route the Natives took westward Warfare between the
Europeans and Indians remained constant, as Natives fought to protect their land. The effects of
these wars lowered the social position of the Indians, as well as significantly lowered the population
of both sides fighting the wars. Conflicts with the Indians were often about land; however,
sometimes they were a European display of dominance. After the many conflicts between Europeans
and Natives, the population of Natives within the United States borders diminished. In order to
satisfy their need and desire for an abundant amount of land, Europeans who migrated to the
Americas picked wars with Natives often resulting in many negative impacts on both sides.

The massacre at Mystic greatly influenced the relationship between English settlers and the Indians
would have for many years to come. By demolishing the Pequot, a clear image was set that the
Indians and whites would never "live with themselves, each other and the land" said one historian.

there has been an increase in the popularity of the"learning a foreign language" literature.
Multilingualism is on the rise in the United States due to the rapid increase in diversity of language
and culture. The assistance of tutors and literature from the library can make the experience of
learning a new language easier and more pleasant. The non–English language, in written form, may
also be found in restaurants and grocery stores.

I live in a historic district with a momentous fire station and a sacred church. Both of these facilities
function daily and contribute to the primitiveness of the town. The church, Grace Baptist, closed for
a couple of years for renovations and then reopened with the name of Wellspring Bible Fellowship.
The religion practiced in the church is Christianity, and the location history and sacredness draws
individuals to this particular church. When my family moved into the house across the street from
the church, we received a history lesson from the previous owners as to why the area is historic:

They were a very powerful tribe, dominating all the region's trade alongside the Dutch. They had
also tried to but other tribes under their control, and succeeded with doing so; in 1635 they had
expanded their reach over many other tribes through intermarriage, warfare, and diplomacy. Of
course, with power comes resentment from others and forms some enemies, making their time of

were mistreating the natives in many respects. Robert Johnson goes a step farther and gives
guidlines on how to deal with the indians: he urged the Virginia Company to "make them equal with

After the passing of King James I, King Charles II became king. Since the kings changed the
colonists were able to create The Virginia House of Burgess which was the first legislative branch of
government in America and it gave the colonists the opportunity to control their government (

The story of the first Thanksgiving, as most Americans have been taught in school, is not exactly
accurate. Blame the school textbooks with details so abridged, softened or out of context that they
are rendered false; children's books that distill the story to its most pleasant version.
To start off, the timeline is relative. The Mayflower did not bring the Pilgrims to North America
from Plymouth, England, in 1620, and they disembarked at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts,
where they set up a colony. In 1621, they celebrated a successful harvest with a three–day gathering

In the Chesapeake region, people came over for a very different reason. The people living here were
in search of gold so they could become rich. Shown in the list of emigrants bound for Virginia
(Document C), mostly men came over that were relatively young in age. Since there were not many

more business related area. Many indentured servants were brought over because of the Head right
system. This system granted the landowner 50 acres for every indentured servant he brought over.

All of the success the Pequots have experienced has occurred due to the signing of the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) on October 17, 1988. This act permitted class III gaming
establishments by American Indian Tribes. The Act stated that Tribal governments were the primary
regulators on Indian Gaming but that the Tribes were required to negotiate with their specific states
to conduct a Class III gambling establishment. This is called the state regulatory layer to state–tribal
compact agreements. After the IGRA was passed the Pequots pursued a Malaysian rubber company
of Genting International requesting a loan, which they eventually secured. It was paid off in just
seven months. Genting International also lent the tribe an additional $142 million for expansion and
a 610 – room hotel and formed a partnership to build a second 330 – room hotel nearby.
The pact between the State of Connecticut and The Mashantucket Pequots gave the Pequots the
exclusive right to operate slot machines. This was amended on April 25, 1994, when the State, the
Mohegan Tribe, and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe singed an agreement that allowed the Mohegan
tribe to operate slot
