Tides Vs Boeing Case Study
In Tides v. Boeing Co., Matthew Neumann and Nicholas Tides were employed by the company's

prohibiting employees from speaking to the press, both employees provided information about what
occurred to a newspaper reporter who incorporated the information in a published article. The Ninth

In Department of Homeland Security v. MacLean, the primary issue presented to the Court was
whether the WPA definition of "law" should be construed narrowly or broadly. The narrow
interpretation is if law is limited to legislative law only, and the broad interpretation is if includes
law created by an agency. The Transportation Security Administration ("TSA") promulgated rules
that place limitations disclosing "sensitive security information." In Maclean, a federal air marshal
publicly disclosed that the TSA decided to cut costs by scaling back the number of federal air
marshals on long–distance flights. The federal air marshal revealed this to a reporter who
subsequently published a story about it.
Basing its decision on the text of the statute, the Court held that the numerous references to "law,
rule, or regulation" in § 2302 manifest that a reference only to "law" should be interpreted to
exclude "rule" or "regulation." Further, the Court elucidated that the Congress frequently mentions
the phrase "law, rule, or regulation" throughout the statute. The text at issue refers only to "law" and
the Court adduced a fundamental concept of statutory interpretation, which is that when the
Congress includes certain language in one part of a statute, but excludes it from another part of the
statute, it is

Essay On US Marshals
The U.S. Marshal Service (USMS) The U.S. Marshal Service is one of the oldest federal law
enforcement agencies established under the Judiciary Act of 1789. The priority of the U.S. Marshals
is for the apprehension of federal Fugitives in 1979 (Peak, 2009). As of 2016, the U.S. Marshals
have about 3,752 deputy U.S. Marshals, 1,457 administrative employees with a budget about 1.3
Billion dollars. U.S Marshals has multiple responsibilities within their agencies such as protecting
the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling seized assets acquired by
criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners and operating the

Marshals in and around our area. A few years back in our city we had a disturbance that ended with
the spouse being murdered. The U.S. Marshals helped track down the killer. After 911, the TSA is
authorized to deploy federal air marshals on every passenger flight of a U.S. air carrier. In order for
this to be implemented, air marshals have to complete a sixteen and a half week training program,
and once they are assigned to an area they must complete about a hundred and sixty hours a year to
keep their certification (Grover, 2017). Within the U.S Marshals you have to have a bachelor's
degree and be between the ages of twenty one and thirty six just like with the FBI and DEA. Most of
the federal agencies have strict age requirements for their agencies, where most Police or Sheriff
Departments can be beyond that age to be hired on. Most agencies go out to about 45 years of age
and some Sheriff Departments can go further or even not have an age requirement. In reading about
the U.S Marshals, it was impressive that the agency would set up stings to get fugitives to come to a
certain location, while believing they won something. One of the events that stuck out was the U.S
Marshals that sent out

Why We Need The TSA Essay
After the events of 09/11/2001 the Department of Homeland security was founded and within the
department fell a new agency known as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA
was instructed to secure all modes of transportation and they committee was instructed that they
wanted to see result soon. Additionally the Aviation and Transportation Security Act required the
screening of passengers, cargo and luggage for explosives as the primary priority. Even though the
TSA is charged with the transportation security the primary focus has been Airport security. Long
lines, arriving two hours early to your flight are all after effects of improved security. Are these
security measures worth the waits and inconvenient or should ... Show more content on

The current screening method is the body scanner which has been reported on multiple times by the
news as it is consider invasive in nature. The screener is able to see the passenger's nude image, but
software updates have eliminated this providing only detection of metallic and nonmetallic threats.
The prior method of a metal detector which did not alarm staff if nonmetallic threats existed allowed
C–4 explosive (a clay type of explosive) to board the plan. The body scanners are quicker than the
former methods of a "pat down", which every passenger had to endure and were less invasive. This
system will be used by the TSA until a better method is discovered, which will provide faster
screening, more privacy to passengers and better detection of threats. The cost of this has rising over
the years but it was the initial setup of the TSA in 2002 which cost the most since there was not an
agency within this realm that completed these duties.
"Security costs at airports have increased because of Transportation Security Administration
operations. It has also resulted in numerous passenger delays and additional cost. People likely are
spending thousands, if not millions, of hours at airports, which results in loss of productivity.
(Gaines & Kappeler, 2012) The initial cost of setting up a security screening area that the airports

The New Meaning Of Airline Packing
The New Meaning to Airline Packing
Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could
have been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or
something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of
hijacker; terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They
run the airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. This paper will
take a look at what the government did in the days after 9/11 to put into place a defense against
terrorists.
From the Aviation and Transportation Act that was passed in November of 2001, Arming Pilots
Against Terrorism Act that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This act required airlines to use stronger materials in the construction of cock pit doors, heavier
locks, and video monitors for pilots to view what is happening in the cabin. Putting in wireless
devices for the flight crew to notify the cockpit of any problems. Just weeks after this act was passed
by Congress the airline Jet Blue had these requirements in every airplane they own. Putting crew
and passengers safety before their profit. This act also gave to the Under Secretary of Transportation
the job recruiting, training, and providing weapons for air marshals for each flight. As an elite group,
highly trained, the air marshals will set with the passengers and have the advantage of knowing what
is going on inside the cabin at all times.
Carol Hallett, head of the Airline Transportation Association said "The wisest investment in
improving security is hiring more air marshals because they are highly trained to provide
professional protection." (Renna, 2003)
This protection is costing the airlines approximately $3,000 per air marshal, per flight. Requiring
two air marshals in each plane.
Part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act gave the Under Secretary of Transportation the
job to recruit, train, and air pilots using similar training programs that were used for air marshals.
The program for the pilots is done on a volunteer basis program only. In

Transportation Security Advertisement Analysis
A FEW years ago, in a supermarket, I swiped my bank card to pay for groceries. I watched the little
screen, waiting for its prompts. During the intervals between swiping my card, confirming the
amount and entering my PIN, I was shown advertisements. Clearly some genius had realized that a
person in this situation is a captive audience.
Attention is a resource; a person has only so much of it. And yet we've auctioned off more and more
of our public space to private commercial interests, with their constant demands on us to look at the
products on display or simply absorb some bit of corporate messaging. Lately, our self–appointed
disrupters have opened up a new frontier of capitalism, complete with its own frontier ethic: to

Of course, you can seal yourself off by putting on noise–canceling headphones, staring at a
smartphone or opening a novel. But what is lost is the public space that is required for sociability,
the kind that depends on people not being self–enclosed.
An airport lounge once felt rich with possibilities for spontaneous encounters. Even if we did not
converse, our attention was free to alight upon one another and linger, or not. We encountered
another person, even if in silence. Such encounters are always ambiguous, and their need for
interpretation gives rise to a train of imaginings, often erotic. This is what makes cities exciting.
The benefits of silence are off the books. They are not measured in the gross domestic product, yet
the availability of silence surely contributes to creativity and innovation. They do not show up
explicitly in social statistics such as level of educational achievement, yet one consumes a great deal
of silence in the course of becoming

My First Day In My Life
As an infant on my mother's hips lying against her shoulder at the airport, it never crossed my mind
that things in my life were certainly never going to be the same in the year to come. My very first
time at the airport was with my mom when I was eleven days old. I was more than likely kicking,
wailing, and sobbing, trying to do anything I could to get her attention because I was a terrible baby.
After finally getting me settled down, we were able to saunter right up to my grandma's gate to meet
her. It was the very first time she met me. She was so excited to see me because I was the first girl to
be born in our immediate family (my mom, my dad, my older brother, and I). The next time I was in

second hijacked plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. After witnessing what
had just happened, society was at a halt. It was like someone had taken a T.V. remote and pressed
the pause button on life. The people in this country didn't know how to move on from what they had
just witnessed. The things my parents have told me, have changed me into who I am today, based on
what they experienced and went through. My parents have never hugged each other so long and
hard as they did when my dad finally got home from this tragic event. I know this because my mom
has told me several times. Our society went through something that people shouldn't have to ever
witness in a lifetime, but things did change for the better afterwards. Years passed and my family

The Transportation Security Administration ( Tsa )
Introduction
The Transport Security Administration (TSA) is an American agency which is under the Department
of Homeland Security and it has the authority and control of all the traveling public in the USA. It
was formed as a reaction to the September 11, terrorist attacks in the country. It was created under
the Aviation and Transport Security Act which was supported by Don Young who was a House of
representative member. It was employed into law by President George Bush on November 19, 2001.
It was first placed in the Department of Transportation, later on, it was placed in the Homeland
Department. The agency is mostly concerned air travel and the provide the screening activities in the
airport, ensure ad provide armed Federal Air Marshal's on different planes and ensure there is no
illegal weapon which may cause harm to the people on board. They also maintain a system of the
wanted individual and the ones which might cause security risk in the aviation industry. They ensure
that these individuals are not permitted in any airport for security purposes (Grover, 2015).
The agency also ensures the security of major highways, buses, pipelines and even railroads.
Airports which hire other firms to do the screening in the airports are provided with the license
below the screening Partnership Program and they are required to follow the set procedures. The
agency has to ensure that the level of security provided by these firms is of the highest order in

What Are Some Principles That You Place The Most Value On...
What are some principles that you place the most value on in your own life? H. L. Mencken argued
that to several people safety is prioritized over many essential ideals when he wrote "The average
man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe". But just how accurate is this observation
and accusation when applied to modern society? There are numerous instances where people
sacrifice freedom for safety, like in the case of vaccination and immunization programs for students
in the United States before attending public schools. The states enforce these programs in the
attempt to safeguard and regulate the health of its citizens. Several cases, like the measles outbreak
that caused the death of six children among the Faith Tabernacle community as a result of an
absence of vaccination, help support and justify the application of these programs by our officials.
Some individuals argue though that these programs restrict religious freedoms along with the rights
of parents to make choices in regards to their children. These citizens reason by stating that
requiring children to do something that is undesirable to their religious principles and practices, like
receiving these inoculations, places a significant and unnecessary affliction on their free–exercise
rights given to them in the 1st amendment when it states "Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". They also say parents have an

Security Manager is Essestial to Today's Organizations Essay
A security manager position is one of the most important jobs that you will find in any organization
today. Recent events over the past few decades, have called for more re–amped security measures
and procedures throughout facilities. The demand for this position was not the same as it was,
twenty or thirty years ago. However, not every company operates on the same level and the position
of a security manager may differ from company to company.
The main objective of the job is to oversee the security operations for that company. Security
managers are in place to develop and enforce security policies to ensure a safe environment for both
employees and visitors. While looking over those two aspects, they ensure the overall safety of the

Which is making sure travels are secured at all times and protecting the airports assets. The security
manager must show that he or she has confidence in their workforce, to ensure that the general
public, airlines, and all person's on an aircraft get to their destination in a safe and sound.
A security manager for TSA needs to make sure all procedures are being followed according to the
standard operating procedures or (SOP). Security deviations are a big concern for security
managers. They must act quickly to identify these deviations and come up with plans when noticed.
Another key responsibility that a security manager must closely look at is ensuring all procedures
are followed accordingly. As a security manager, he or she must ensure that each employee knows
all required procedures and is proficient in their tasks. If an employee was to be considered unfit for
duty, and the manager allowed them to continue working, this could put the airport in jeopardy.
It is apparent, that every security manager has a lot of responsibilities and is considered to be a vital
asset to any organization. Security, is the main focus and priority of those that are selected into the
position of security manager. The roles and responsibilities of a TSA security manager are solely
based on protecting the traveling public and maintaining order within an airport terminal. The
security managers are in place to make sure that these people never even

It was thought to be only a freak accident. Less than twenty minutes later, a United Airlines plane

According to the former federal air marshal P. Jeffrey Black, "'What we've got now is nothing but
security theater, meaning all these bells and whistles that you see are only meant to make you feel

"massive government bureaucracy with too much money" and "focuses on herding people through
checkpoints as fast as possible and hires poorly–trained workers who dress up in uniforms and play
cop." Steve Elson was a security special agent with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He
was hired to attempt to sneak guns, bombs, and other weapons past security. He got through security
ninety percent of the time without his weapons being detected. Apparently, Elson said, the FAA did
not validate his results because they only wanted him to try to pass security using a certain size gun
(Mayerowitz). This reaction from the FAA was unacceptable to Elson because he knew that
terrorists are crafty and unpredictable. As long as they have a different size gun than what the FAA
planned for, they would more than likely pass security. One of Elson's coworkers, Dzakovic, said
that at most airports uncover bombs twenty percent of the time. "'Usually the worse the results were
that we had on any given project, the less we were tasked to test to see if they had improved,'
Dzakovic said." To Dzakovic and Elson, their managers were incapable of acknowledging that their
process might not be perfect. Another critic of the TSA is the House Representative John Mica. He
said, "'I helped create TSA and I've referred to it sometimes as either my b****** child or a monster

Facility Placement
I). Airport maintenance facilities
The airport maintenance facilities contain hangar areas and involve public access as well as supply
of deliverables. Since these facilities are accessible to the public, airport operator should coordinate
security of these facilities to limit the chances of any possible threat. Moreover, the products
delivered through these facilities might contain materials that might be useful in planting a security
assault.
II). Aircraft movement area
By definition, aircraft movement encompasses areas such as runways, aircraft ramps, and taxiways.
These movement areas are completely airside and require specific security measures as provided for
by the law in addition to adhering to Federal Aviation Regulations. The accessibility of the aircraft
movement area by public or individuals conducting specific duties makes such areas prone to
security needs. Largely, the airport operator might not assume that the intentions of persons
accessing these areas are not potential threat to the airport security.
III). Air rescue and fire fighting facilities
The air rescue and fire fighting facilities are critical to airport operation. While there is need for
preparedness in handling accidental fire or conducting air rescue just incase incidences of similar
nature occur, these facilities require adequate security concerns. Moreover, the positioning of these
facilities makes them potential for security vulnerabilities. At times, the public

According to Aaron Smith of CNN, "The Transportation Security Administration said it discovered
3,391 guns in carry–ons at checkpoints in 2016, a 28% increase from the year before. That works
out to about nine every day." (Smith 1). As painful as it may be to go through the seemingly never–

trying their best to stop ALL weapons and unsafe items from potentially traveling into planes,
whether on people or in bags. But believe it or not, you did not have to scan your bags or take off
your shoes 60 years ago. Airport Security may take a while to get through, but has truly improved
because of Southwest Airlines Flight 49, many major technology breakthroughs, and the terrorist
attacks on 9/11.
Before Southern Airways Flight 49 took off on November 10th, 1972, security was a breeze. "At

Cleveland, Lexington, Ky., Chattanooga, Tenn., Orlando, Fla., Havana, Key West, Fla., Orlando
again, and then finally back to Havana. They [the hijackers] threatened to crash the plane into the
Oak Ridge nuclear power plant" (UPI 1). This flight was monumental in history for airport security.
Before this scary event, people and baggage were not scanned or checked. As exampled above, it
was easy to smuggle now–a–day illegal air travel items onto planes, such as guns. "In response, the

Argumentative Essay On National Security
The U.S. Constitution ensures our privilege of security and the privilege to be free from
unreasonable search and seizures. But to what degree is unreasonable? I believe that these rights
might be misinterpreted depending on the circumstance that is happening. In the event that
something is to affect the health and happiness of the common people, in other words, national
security. At that point I do believe these rights should to be put on delay for the occasion. I feel that
national security is more imperative than protection to a degree. I feel that when all else fails,
compromise is unavoidable. There have been an excessive number of "attacks," and some of these
attacks could have been avoided, an example of this is when a terrorist enters this country and hurts
a large number of individuals. Likewise another argument is that our borders are permitting a huge
number of unlawful, unidentified individuals to this country and we don't know what they are
prepared to do or what they are capable of.
The Transportation Security Administration otherwise called TSA, has a major duty with individuals
and National Security. The TSA has a tendency to disregard the protection of U.S Citizens and
everybody who visits the United States in light of the fact that the security of everybody's life is at
risk. This is the place where national security rings a bell. Prior to the chaos of September 11 2001,
the United States was constrained to checking as they do today. After 9/11 the

TSA Paper
TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, needs to be improved. It is time consuming,
invasive and often ineffective because of pat downs and body scans. TSA is a major part of
American airport security. In a world where such precautions are necessary, the system should be
vastly upgraded to actually provide the security it claims to give.
Some children dream of acquiring X–Ray vision as a superpower, but did it ever occur to them that
it strips a person of their rights and degrades them? Body scanners used in airports put people in a
vulnerable state as a naked image of them is captured. Another way TSA attacks an individual's
rights is when they are patted down in front of their family or friends and countless strangers. This is
the perfect opportunity for the worker to get handsy and grope an innocent person waiting to get on

blacks if they feel safe I this country, many of them will say "no". In the country, the growing rate of
police brutality against the young black continues to be an issue. Many blacks had been killed by the
police officer for reasons that were not good enough for them to be shot and killed. According to the
data collected for the counted, black males aged 15–34 were nine times more likely than other
Americans to be killed by the law enforcement (Jon Swaine and Ciara McCarthy). An example is
the case of Freddie Gray who was illegally arrested by the police on Baltimore Street, and was
maltreated during the time he was arrested and the time he was taken to the hospital which caused

to unite the nation and urged Americans to move forward from the devastation. Even though
nineteen terrorists killed almost three–thousand innocent civilians and created billions of dollars in
damage all in one morning, the President encouraged the general population that the ties that bound

The Pros And Cons Of Airport Shootings
Imagine yourself in an airport. You just walked off of a plane after a really nice vacation. You feel
tired and miserable knowing that your vacation is over and now have to return to your regular life.
After walking across and squeezing yourself through crowds of people in the airport, you finally get
to the baggage claim. As you look around, you notice that there are hundreds of other people that
look just as tired as you do. You are half asleep when all of a sudden, you hear a gunshot to your
right. Now, I'm sure in your head you're saying, "What is going on?" According to Lisa Marie Pane,
"experts say the public areas of an airport remain vulnerable, because the focus of security is
devoted to screening passengers." Among those areas include the baggage claim.
The article "TSA releases 2015 statistics" states the rules that travelers have to abide by when
traveling with guns. TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, is the government–affiliated
association that deals with airport's security. The rules mentioned in this article include signing an
agreement that claims that the weapon is unloaded, keeping the weapon in a locked, hard–shell case,
and placing these weapons in checked bags that are not considered a carry–on bag. However, history
shows that people have managed to violate these rules and harm others.

processing visas for travel to the United States. After September 11th the Visa Security Program was

These posts are tasked with performing thorough background checks on anyone who applies for
travel to the United States from high risk areas. The Department of Homeland Security(DHS) has

The Global Air Transport Industry
The global air transport industry is one of the largest industries beating out the pharmaceuticals
industry, textiles or automotive industries and the air transport industry is around half as big as the
global chemicals and food and beverage industry. If we was to label air transport as a country, it
would rank as 21st in the world, equal to Switzerland and doubling Chile or Singapore.
There are 13.4 million indirect jobs in industries supplying the tourism industry are supported by
visitors that fly in. These include employment and activities of suppliers to the air transport industry,
places like aviation fuel suppliers; construction companies that build airport facilities; manufacturers
of goods sold in airport retail outlets; suppliers of sub–components used in aircraft; and a wide
variety of activities in the business services sector. Companies in the air transport industry support
over 9.8 million indirect jobs through the purchase of goods and services. These indirect jobs
contributed approximately $697 billion to global GDP in 2012.
Direct and indirect tourism jobs supported by air transport create 6.9 million jobs in other parts of
the economy, through employees spending their earnings on other goods and services. Direct,
indirect, and induced creates 35 million jobs within tourism, contributing nearly $807 billion
annually to world GDP. The shopping of employees of directly or indirectly job inside the airports
supports jobs in retail like banks and restaurants.

Tsa Policies Essay
As an aviation management major airport security is a concern that I have taken a huge interest in.
Making travel safer to air travelers is one of the biggest tasks that will never end as long as there is a
plane in the sky. However, there are many problems that come about when traveling because
passengers feel as if they are being harassed, which doesn't set a good look for the Transportation
Security Administration. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) consist of 50,000
security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nation's
transportation systems so you and your family can travel safely. They look for bombs at checkpoints

Finally, the DHS found that the TSA had implemented procedures to investigate and resolve
passenger complaints regarding the screening process.
The TSA maintains a screening Performance Management Information System (PMIS) where
recorded complaints are logged. Operations research analysis teams and federal security directors
review complaints logged in the database to track trends and identify areas of concern and take
appropriate actions, including possible disciplinary actions, to resolve specific issues. Complaints
involving allegations of discrimination based on color, race, gender, religion, or national or ethnic
origin are forwarded to the TSA's Office of Civil Rights for further investigation. Despite
considerable concern raised by some regarding inappropriate behavior during pat–down screening
procedures, the DHS found no problems with the technique.
Nonetheless, privacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ALCU), continue to
express concern over potential intrusion on individual rights and alleged cases of sexual harassment
and abuse of passengers, particularly female passengers, by TSA screeners. These concerns,
however, raise a significant challenge for the TSA: to maintain high levels of security, which require
resolving all alarms and screening in detail those passengers ascertained to pose an elevated security
risk, while maintaining the privacy rights and dignity of passengers identified for these secondary

Over the course of the United States history, there have been numerous Federal Law enforcement
agencies that have protected and enforced laws within the United States. The Federal Borough of
Investigation (FIB), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF) agency

nation as well. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) and customs and immigrations

The west had small towns popping up everywhere and with little to no law, the Marshals were called

The Marshals duties really didn't with the exception of serving a lot more warrants and the hunting

and Butch Cassidy. Marshals such as Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and Pat Garret were perhaps just
as famous or infamous as the outlaws themselves. After many outlaw and Marshal deaths, the wild

The 1900's began with a steel, steel for railroads that is. With the expansion of America west,
railroads became the main source of travel. With no one to protect the railroads from robbers, and

Due to the development of multiple federal agencies such as the FBI, the Marshals fell silent until

As an infant on my mother's hips at the airport it never crossed my mind that things in my life were
certainly never going to be the same in the months to come. My very first time at the airport was
with my mom when I was eleven days old, and we were able to walk right up to my grandma's gate
to meet her. It was the very first time she met me. The next time I was in an airport was after I got of
a plan to meet my whole family for the first time when I was just 2 months old. As before, my
family was able to meet my mom and I right at the gate. TSA wasn't even a thing like it is today. On
September 11th of 2000 tragedy struck this nation and nothing has been the same since. My father
received a call the morning of the 11th to load up in a P–3 Orion with 10 other people and was set
up to be in the air by noon. They flew up and down the coast patrolling for 11 draining hours. They
had loaded up the plane with missiles and were told to fire them at any plane in sight. As you can
imagine my mom was terrified, because all of what was just listed was unknown information at the
time. We were stationed in Brunswick Maine at the time and to my knowledge now, the men who
flew the planes into the twin towers started their morning by taking a plane from Portland Maine to
Boston, from which they then hijacked the planes that were to be longer flights because they had the
most fuel. The things my parents have told me, have changed me into who I am today, based on

All Airline Pilots Should Be Armed
All Airline Pilots should be Armed Abstract The issue of pilots carrying weapons, while flying, is
not new. Since the earliest days of pilots flying the U.S. Mail, they carried guns to protect
themselves and the vital cargo of mail. Today, pilots are authorized to fly with weapons to protect
the aircraft, their passengers, and themselves from hijackers and terrorists. It has become a last line
of defense in case of a hostile takeover of the aircraft, turning it into a weapon of mass destruction,
as we witnessed, during the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center (9/11). The controversy
surrounding this issue today has grown into heated debates with anti–gun lobbyist protest, and even
the pilots themselves proclaiming their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was designed to add enhanced security during times of "door transition" by impeding access to
the cockpit door and providing additional time for crewmembers to secure the door in the event of
an attempted breach. It is also very costly to the airlines to have the doors installed. There are also
safety concerns. The pilots may become trapped in the cockpit after a crash, or if the door is sealed
tightly, it could blow apart during a pressurization loss. Reinforcing the door is still a good idea, and
it does act as a deterrent to possible hijackings and it may slow down potential hijackers, but it
cannot be relied on 100%. Many people against arming pilots have several reasons to support their
objections. One is that a stray bullet could penetrate the skin on the aircraft and cause a catastrophic
pressurization loss, which could lead to a crash. However, that is simply not true. The fuselage of an
aircraft is made of aluminum alloys, punctures to its surface from a bullet, will only make a hole,
and the aircraft's pressurization system would compensate for the small hole. People probably would
not even notice the difference in pressurization. This theory was actually played out when a US

Notes On The Homeland Security
DEPT. OF HOMELAND SEC. V. MACLEAN: TSAATTEMPTS TO SILENCE
WHISTLEBLOWERS
Author (51)* I. INTRODUCTION
In response to the savage attacks orchestrated by foreign terrorist organization Al–Qaeda on
September 11, the United States Congress enacted the Homeland Security Act in 2002. This Act
established the Department of Homeland Security as an executive department of the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security combined 22 different federal agencies into a unified,
integrated Department for the purpose of protecting the nation against threats to the homeland. The
Homeland Security Act authorized the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to "prescribe
regulations prohibiting the disclosure of information . . . if the Under Secretary decides that
disclosur[e] would . . . be detrimental to the security of transportation." Acting on the authority
outlined in the Homeland Security Act, the TSA created and implemented regulations that prohibited
the unauthorized disclosure of "sensitive security information," which included "[s]pecific details of
aviation security measures . . . [such as] information concerning specific numbers of Federal Air
Marshals, deployments or missions, and the methods involved in such operations."
The issue before the U.S. Supreme Court in this case is two–fold: (1) whether a whistleblower's
disclosure was specifically prohibited by the TSA's regulations on sensitive security information ,
and (2) whether the whistleblower's

The Last Stand: Should Airline Pilots Be Allowed to Carry...
Airline security has grown dramatically since 9–11. They have put into place many rigorous security
check points that are very unnecessary, and mainly just disturb people in the process. Even though
there are these security check points, people will always find a way to bypass the system and bring
along some type of weapon. Who is the greatest target on a plane? Well in most cases it will be the
caption, but how is the caption and co–caption supposed to fend off someone with a weapon? The
answer to this question is very clear, you give them a weapon of their own, a firearm. September 11,
2001 was one of the most painful memories that our generation would come to know as a nation.
Just for a recap, the September bombings were carried out by 19 terrorist that easily smuggled box–
cutters and knives on the plains, they hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against
targets in the United States. Two of the airliners struck the towers of the World Trade Center, while
the third struck the Pentagon. The last plane crashed in a rural field in western Pennsylvania, after
the passengers bravely fought off the four hijackers (staff). After the towers fell, and thousands of
people were killed, airlines across the United States set out an initiative to boost their security, one
being to arm the pilots. Arming pilots wasn't some new idea that someone came up with after 9–11.
Actually from the first time planes were put in the air for commercial aviation to 1987, pilots

The Security Administration ( Tsa )
Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, congress passed sweeping changes to the security of aviation
and border protection in the United States. Three agencies were significantly impacted by these
changes and the aftermath of 9/11: Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Customs and
Border Protection (CBP), and Federal Air Marshal (FAM). However, 14 years later is important to
review the changes which were implemented by sweeping popularity following 9/11 and evaluate
their effectiveness. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established by the
Aviation and Security Act signed into law on November 19, 2001. The Aviation and Security Act
required the TSA complete more than 30 mandates by the end of 2002. In March 2003, TSA was
transferred to the newly established Department of Homeland Security from the Department of
Transportation (Transportation Security Administration). As of 2014, the TSA has an annual budget
of $7.9 Billion and employs 62,000 people. However, there is evidence that the TSA may not be
effective based on the cost. George Leef, a Forbes contributor, cited a Government Accountability
Office (GAO) regarding the Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT). The
SPOT program relies on the premise that government observers in airports can detect individuals
who are intent on terrorism based on behavioral clues. The report issued by the GAO states that it is
ineffective they concluded: "The subjectivity of the SPOT

The Dangers And Limitations Of Homeland Intelligence
Homeland security must utilize intelligence gathered to ensure the protection of its borders. Without
proper intelligence gathering or strategies homeland security wouldn't be able to perform at its
upmost capability. Intelligence communities, fusion centers, and appointed individuals are the
cornerstones of how intelligence supports homeland security efforts. The capabilities and limitations
of intelligence gathering and dissemination in these areas help ensure American borders are
protected. These cornerstones will continue to provide vital intelligence with an ever–growing
terrorist threat. This paper will attempt to discuss the capabilities and limitations of these
cornerstones and how they support intelligence within the homeland security spectrum.
Homeland Security is part of the United States Intelligence Community or known as IC. "The IC
works to collect and convey essential security–related information to the president and members of
the policymaking, law enforcement, and military communities as they need to carry out their
required functions and duties" (Bullock, J. A., Haddow, G. D., Coppola, D. P., & Books24x7, I.)
Being apart of the intelligence community allows homeland security the coordination between outer
agencies. This in turn provides free following intelligence that contributes to completing each
agencies mission. All agencies working within the intelligence community must determine which
intelligence may be gathered and how to collect

The Dangers Of Airport Security
If airport security had the advanced technology they have now back in 2001, there is a possibility
that the 9/11 hijacking would have never happened. For years people would plant bombs and
weapons on their bodies to prevent it from being found, but with the technology airport security has
now there is nowhere to hide weapons without it being detected. " when we stop to give thanks for
all our blessings, let's give thanks for the people who spend their days and nights working to stop the
terrorist from succeeding– including the men and women of the TSA (thiessen)." Everyone needs to
stop and give thanks to the people who spend night and day working to stop terrorist because
without them we would have to live in constant fear of surviving flight. People don't realize how
blessed they are to have people and organizations like TSA. Airport security has a big impact on
people's safety during flight. Since the stand in 2002 Airport security has advanced their technology,
and taken steps to secure people's privacy. Since TSA's stand in 2002 they have screened nearly six
billion passengers. Their frontline officers have detected thousands of firearms and other countless
prohibited items, and prevented those weapons from entering the cabin of the aircraft. In fact, more
than 10 years after 9/11, TSA officers still detect, on average, Between three to four firearms
everyday in carry–on bags at security checkpoints around the country. The Transportation Security

The Security Of The United States Security
After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, people in the United States knew that absolutely
anything could happen without even thinking about it. This event made the government realize that
the United States security was not the best it could be. There always has been security everywhere,
but today everything is taken to another level and is being controlled with a great amount of
precautions. Now there is a lot more airport security, which will help prevent any more hijacking of
planes or bombings. There has also been a lot more security in New York City because of the
terrorist attack. There are also new technologies and programs that help with the security of this
country.

The Department of Homeland Security had also formed a division to analyze intelligence gathered
by the FBI, CIA, and many other police agencies and military agencies (Swanson, Charles R.,
Territo, Leonard, Taylor, Robert W., 90). Barack Obama appointed Janet Napolitano as the third
secretary of the department and is also the governor in the area of terrorism and immigration reform.
Napolitano has played an important role in strengthening border security by increasing forces along
the border, and increasing resources and technology to aid in the fight against terrorism (Swanson,
Charles R., Territo, Leonard, Taylor, Robert W., 90). The DHS has become an important role to the
security of the public in the United States.
Within this department, there was a color–coded threat system known as the Homeland Security

attacks, yellow for significant risk of terrorist attacks, blue for general risk of terrorist attacks, and
green for low risk of terrorist attacks (Homeland Security News, 2011). This system is being

Guns in the Cockpit
On the morning of September 11, 2001, four airplanes were hijacked and two of them, brought the
collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. As a result of these attacks on the
United States, airports have come to the realization that the only way to prevent another hijacking is
by strengthening the security on aircrafts through the cockpit. In order to secure the cockpit and
ensure the safety of the passengers on board, guns were introduced as a possible solution in the
event of an emergency situation like those that took place in September of 2001.

When the craft was in the air, the terrorists took the initiative and stormed into the cockpit and took
over the controls, turning the aircraft into a guided missile (CBS 1). Increasing security immediately
became an important aspect of airports shortly there after. Adequate security ensures the safety of
the people in the air and citizens on the ground below. It is expected by passengers, that they are
boarding a craft that will land safely at their intended destination. An aircraft should be a safe place
for everyone and even though every person that enters the airport goes through the required security
checkpoints, there is a small fraction of error. Someone will get by with a potential weapon and
board the plane along with it; therefore, the captains should have some form of a rear–view mirror
(Press 2). One of the many proposals made since the attacks is installing video cameras in the cabin
to monitor passenger activity for any possible terrorist actions. A pilot should be aware of what is
happening to the plane and the passengers on board at all times.
In a situation where someone is trying to hijack an airplane, there are three factors needed to be
assessed. Does the terrorist have a weapon, are they attacking alone, and is he or she a trained
fighter in the case of a Federal Air Marshal interfering (APSA 2)? In the incident of the World Trade
Center attacks, the

Persuasive Essay On How To Stop Terrorism
Imagine it's 2001 you are just taking a leisurely walk in Stonycreek. You hear the sounds of the city
planes, cars, people, " BOOM!". You look across the street you see the twin towers and to planes.
You start to run. Once you're far enough you watch them burn. Now everything is more loud. This is
no ordinary walk in New York City.
I chose this topic for two reasons. For one it is something that happens a lot and it gets talked about
a lot and it's is being planned out every single day. This makes it good to look back on and be on top
of. Two it is a very interesting topic to me. It is something that happens a lot and that means that
there is more to learn about it. My driving question was how could we make peace or stop terrorism.
This question is very simple yet puzzling to figure out. It would be hard to change the minds of all
the terrorist groups. With all of the research I have gathered and thinking a lot about this topic I have
figured that it would be hard to figure out a solution, although it could be done. Terrorism is when
people do harmful and violent things things that are done for reasons such as religious, political, or
ideological goals and or reasons. Terrorism is a worldwide problem that affects everyone whether
you're in an attack or not. For example the attacks of 9/11 changed the life of all the people. 3,000

The Transportation Safety Act Of 9 / 11 : Aviation And...
Two months after the 9/11 attacks, congress passed Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which
created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and federalized airports. Prior to 9/11
airport security was outsourced to private companies with very lackadaisical regulations. The TSA
and the Federal Air Marshall Service (FAMs). 9/11 affected all aspects of travel, even railways.
Since 9/11there have been multiple attacks against transit systems including Moscow, Madrid and
London by terrorist cells either affiliated or sympathetic to al Qaeda. President George W. Bush
signed into effect the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA).
FAMs have been protecting aircrafts for well over fifty (50) years, ever since the first recorded
aircraft hijacking that took place Peru on February 21st 1931. The position has been intricately
woven into the fabric of aviation history. Modern day FAM's job is to have the ability to blend in
with passengers at the airport and while onboard an aircraft. They rely on their extensive training,
which includes investigative techniques, behavior recognition, firearms proficiency and close
quarters self–defense measures to protect the flying public. Marksmen standards place an air
marshal within the top 1% of all shooters in the world. Prior to 9/11 only 33 officers were working
at full time capacity, after 9/11 600 officers were activated for duty and thousands more followed.
IRTPA allowed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take over the pre–flight
comparisons/screening of airline passenger information from several watchlists for international and
domestic flights. TSA developed the Secure Flight program which was introduced in August of 2009
to matches passenger information against watch lists maintained by the federal government. Airline
personnel were given the right to demand government–issued ID be shown if ordered by the TSA to
do so, but those orders are to remain confidential so there is no oversight as to when the airline has
been ordered to request ID and when they are requesting it on their own imperative

Counter Terrorism Alternatives
In today's day and age, the fear of terrorism is not only a common sentiment, but is also a rising
subject of debate. In order to keep troops out of harm's way, the United States has looked for
alternate means of combatting terrorist organizations. Since September 11, 2001 the United States
has relied heavily on its men and women in uniform to prevent terrorism abroad. Technology of
today and the use of intelligence offer the United States alternate means of addressing terrorism. For
instance, drone strikes were called by former US CIA director Leon Panetta, "the only game in town
in term of confronting or trying to disrupt the Al Qaeda leadership" (ODLE, 2013). With the use of
typology, socioeconomic assistance, drones, diplomatic engagement and enhanced airline security
services, the use of military force is not the only way to prevent terrorism.
If our country wants to never send another son or daughter to war then we must first understand who
the terrorists are. Former President George Bush said "we fight against poverty because hope is an
answer to terror" (Lee 2011). On the other hand, there are studies that say the opposite, that
terrorism is not related to poverty. Poverty and education are very important factors of what violence
occurs. The lower the poverty and education the increased chances for violence.

The Impact Of Aviation On The United States
"You haven't seen a tree until you have seen its shadow from the sky." Amelia Earhart, the first
woman to fly a solo nonstop trans–Atlantic aircraft, spoke these words about the joys of flight in
1932. She and others, such as Orville and Wilbur Wright, Charles H. Lindbergh, and Frank Whittle,
recognized early on how aviation would change our view of the world. Since these early discoveries
of aviation, society has relied on flight as a primary means for safe transportation. This feeling of
security was challenged on September 11, 2001, when nineteen hijackers took control of four
commercial airliners and aimed the planes at targets in the United States. These terrorists' attacks,
referred to as 9/11, created the need for improved airport and airline security and reformed the
United States Government's entire security strategy and infrastructure.
Aviation has long existed as target for criminals, mentally deranged, and more recently, terrorists.
John Graham blew up United DC–6 over Colorado in 1955 with twenty–five sticks of dynamite in
his suitcase. In the 1960s, hijackers would commonly take over flights and divert them to Cuba. The
government responded by developing laws with tougher penalties. On November 24, 1971,
D.B.Cooper had a bomb with him on the plane and passed a note to the flight attendant explaining
that he would detonate the bomb if he were not given $200,000. After receiving the ransom, he
forced the plane to take off again, parachuted out of the aft door,

TSA is able to open and search passenger's luggage for security screening, not many people like this
ability. In some cases the agents don't replace the locks or close them properly. TSA has two
companies make different kinds of locks that can be opened and relocked by special tools and
information by the manufacturer. A positive side to this note is that if a passengers TSA approved
lock is missing they can file a claim with form SF–95. (Security, 2010) People get irritated by this,
because no one wants people going through their personal belongings. Despite the fact that this is a
simple way to detect if someone is carrying a bomb, any other type of explosives or anything else
that could be dangerous boarding a plane.
In the beginning of November 2010 TSA added new screening procedures. The new screening
procedures were created because of the reactions of the "Underwear bomber". That person smuggled
plastic explosives onto and airplane in December 2009. These procedures include the backscatter X–
ray and the sliding pat–downs. The backscatter X–ray displays images of passenger's bodies. During
sliding pat–downs officers screen passenger's breast, buttocks and genitals with the back of their
hand. All pat–downs are done by a TSA officer of same gender of that passenger. And if requested
the procedure can be done in a private room. "On November 23, 2010 TSA officials said that some

he has any customers at all. I do however agree with the possible slogan "If I am polite, ask yourself
what is wrong" for Lou's Kozy Korner Koffee Shop.
4. Find a paragraph that appeals to three senses and identify those senses.
Paragraph 25– "Rag" Ben answers. He finds one, returns to the booth, and wipes the crumbs off the

returns to his booth. Sight– There is much appealing to the sense of sight. The imagination can put

Tides Vs Boeing Case Study

  • 1. Tides Vs Boeing Case Study In Tides v. Boeing Co., Matthew Neumann and Nicholas Tides were employed by the company's SOX audit group. The employees allege that they were pressured by supervisors to provide reports giving favorable reviews to internal controls despite their concerns that said controls were vulnerable to manipulation by unauthorized users. Notwithstanding a published company policy prohibiting employees from speaking to the press, both employees provided information about what occurred to a newspaper reporter who incorporated the information in a published article. The Ninth Circuit held that the plaintiffs could not avail themselves to retaliation remedies in the SOX because "[l]eaks to the media are not protected." The court articulated that SOX ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Department of Homeland Security v. MacLean, the primary issue presented to the Court was whether the WPA definition of "law" should be construed narrowly or broadly. The narrow interpretation is if law is limited to legislative law only, and the broad interpretation is if includes law created by an agency. The Transportation Security Administration ("TSA") promulgated rules that place limitations disclosing "sensitive security information." In Maclean, a federal air marshal publicly disclosed that the TSA decided to cut costs by scaling back the number of federal air marshals on long–distance flights. The federal air marshal revealed this to a reporter who subsequently published a story about it. Basing its decision on the text of the statute, the Court held that the numerous references to "law, rule, or regulation" in § 2302 manifest that a reference only to "law" should be interpreted to exclude "rule" or "regulation." Further, the Court elucidated that the Congress frequently mentions the phrase "law, rule, or regulation" throughout the statute. The text at issue refers only to "law" and the Court adduced a fundamental concept of statutory interpretation, which is that when the Congress includes certain language in one part of a statute, but excludes it from another part of the statute, it is ... • 3. Essay On US Marshals The U.S. Marshal Service (USMS) The U.S. Marshal Service is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies established under the Judiciary Act of 1789. The priority of the U.S. Marshals is for the apprehension of federal Fugitives in 1979 (Peak, 2009). As of 2016, the U.S. Marshals have about 3,752 deputy U.S. Marshals, 1,457 administrative employees with a budget about 1.3 Billion dollars. U.S Marshals has multiple responsibilities within their agencies such as protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners and operating the Witness Security Program (U.S. Marshals, 2017). One thing that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marshals in and around our area. A few years back in our city we had a disturbance that ended with the spouse being murdered. The U.S. Marshals helped track down the killer. After 911, the TSA is authorized to deploy federal air marshals on every passenger flight of a U.S. air carrier. In order for this to be implemented, air marshals have to complete a sixteen and a half week training program, and once they are assigned to an area they must complete about a hundred and sixty hours a year to keep their certification (Grover, 2017). Within the U.S Marshals you have to have a bachelor's degree and be between the ages of twenty one and thirty six just like with the FBI and DEA. Most of the federal agencies have strict age requirements for their agencies, where most Police or Sheriff Departments can be beyond that age to be hired on. Most agencies go out to about 45 years of age and some Sheriff Departments can go further or even not have an age requirement. In reading about the U.S Marshals, it was impressive that the agency would set up stings to get fugitives to come to a certain location, while believing they won something. • 5. Why We Need The TSA Essay After the events of 09/11/2001 the Department of Homeland security was founded and within the department fell a new agency known as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA was instructed to secure all modes of transportation and they committee was instructed that they wanted to see result soon. Additionally the Aviation and Transportation Security Act required the screening of passengers, cargo and luggage for explosives as the primary priority. Even though the TSA is charged with the transportation security the primary focus has been Airport security. Long lines, arriving two hours early to your flight are all after effects of improved security. Are these security measures worth the waits and inconvenient or should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The current screening method is the body scanner which has been reported on multiple times by the news as it is consider invasive in nature. The screener is able to see the passenger's nude image, but software updates have eliminated this providing only detection of metallic and nonmetallic threats. The prior method of a metal detector which did not alarm staff if nonmetallic threats existed allowed C–4 explosive (a clay type of explosive) to board the plan. The body scanners are quicker than the former methods of a "pat down", which every passenger had to endure and were less invasive. This system will be used by the TSA until a better method is discovered, which will provide faster screening, more privacy to passengers and better detection of threats. The cost of this has rising over the years but it was the initial setup of the TSA in 2002 which cost the most since there was not an agency within this realm that completed these duties. "Security costs at airports have increased because of Transportation Security Administration operations. It has also resulted in numerous passenger delays and additional cost. People likely are spending thousands, if not millions, of hours at airports, which results in loss of productivity. (Gaines & Kappeler, 2012) The initial cost of setting up a security screening area that the airports was $6.8 billon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The New Meaning Of Airline Packing The New Meaning to Airline Packing Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could have been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of hijacker; terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They run the airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. This paper will take a look at what the government did in the days after 9/11 to put into place a defense against terrorists. From the Aviation and Transportation Act that was passed in November of 2001, Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This act required airlines to use stronger materials in the construction of cock pit doors, heavier locks, and video monitors for pilots to view what is happening in the cabin. Putting in wireless devices for the flight crew to notify the cockpit of any problems. Just weeks after this act was passed by Congress the airline Jet Blue had these requirements in every airplane they own. Putting crew and passengers safety before their profit. This act also gave to the Under Secretary of Transportation the job recruiting, training, and providing weapons for air marshals for each flight. As an elite group, highly trained, the air marshals will set with the passengers and have the advantage of knowing what is going on inside the cabin at all times. Carol Hallett, head of the Airline Transportation Association said "The wisest investment in improving security is hiring more air marshals because they are highly trained to provide professional protection." (Renna, 2003) This protection is costing the airlines approximately $3,000 per air marshal, per flight. Requiring two air marshals in each plane. Part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act gave the Under Secretary of Transportation the job to recruit, train, and air pilots using similar training programs that were used for air marshals. The program for the pilots is done on a volunteer basis program only. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Transportation Security Advertisement Analysis A FEW years ago, in a supermarket, I swiped my bank card to pay for groceries. I watched the little screen, waiting for its prompts. During the intervals between swiping my card, confirming the amount and entering my PIN, I was shown advertisements. Clearly some genius had realized that a person in this situation is a captive audience. Attention is a resource; a person has only so much of it. And yet we've auctioned off more and more of our public space to private commercial interests, with their constant demands on us to look at the products on display or simply absorb some bit of corporate messaging. Lately, our self–appointed disrupters have opened up a new frontier of capitalism, complete with its own frontier ethic: to boldly dig up and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, you can seal yourself off by putting on noise–canceling headphones, staring at a smartphone or opening a novel. But what is lost is the public space that is required for sociability, the kind that depends on people not being self–enclosed. An airport lounge once felt rich with possibilities for spontaneous encounters. Even if we did not converse, our attention was free to alight upon one another and linger, or not. We encountered another person, even if in silence. Such encounters are always ambiguous, and their need for interpretation gives rise to a train of imaginings, often erotic. This is what makes cities exciting. The benefits of silence are off the books. They are not measured in the gross domestic product, yet the availability of silence surely contributes to creativity and innovation. They do not show up explicitly in social statistics such as level of educational achievement, yet one consumes a great deal of silence in the course of becoming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. My First Day In My Life As an infant on my mother's hips lying against her shoulder at the airport, it never crossed my mind that things in my life were certainly never going to be the same in the year to come. My very first time at the airport was with my mom when I was eleven days old. I was more than likely kicking, wailing, and sobbing, trying to do anything I could to get her attention because I was a terrible baby. After finally getting me settled down, we were able to saunter right up to my grandma's gate to meet her. It was the very first time she met me. She was so excited to see me because I was the first girl to be born in our immediate family (my mom, my dad, my older brother, and I). From Boston, they hijacked the planes that were to be longer flights because they had the most fuel. Then a couple hours later the first hit happened, striking the north tower of the World Trade Center. Not even an hour later a second hijacked plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. After witnessing what had just happened, society was at a halt. It was like someone had taken a T.V. remote and pressed the pause button on life. The people in this country didn't know how to move on from what they had just witnessed. The things my parents have told me, have changed me into who I am today, based on what they experienced and went through. My parents have never hugged each other so long and hard as they did when my dad finally got home from this tragic event. I know this because my mom has told me several times. Our society went through something that people shouldn't have to ever witness in a lifetime, but things did change for the better afterwards. Years passed and my family walked into the airport on our way to Indiana to visit our family. The Transportation Security Administration ( Tsa ) Introduction The Transport Security Administration (TSA) is an American agency which is under the Department of Homeland Security and it has the authority and control of all the traveling public in the USA. It was formed as a reaction to the September 11, terrorist attacks in the country. It was created under the Aviation and Transport Security Act which was supported by Don Young who was a House of representative member. It was employed into law by President George Bush on November 19, 2001. It was first placed in the Department of Transportation, later on, it was placed in the Homeland Department. The agency is mostly concerned air travel and the provide the screening activities in the airport, ensure ad provide armed Federal Air Marshal's on different planes and ensure there is no illegal weapon which may cause harm to the people on board. They also maintain a system of the wanted individual and the ones which might cause security risk in the aviation industry. • 15. What Are Some Principles That You Place The Most Value On... What are some principles that you place the most value on in your own life? H. L. Mencken argued that to several people safety is prioritized over many essential ideals when he wrote "The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe". But just how accurate is this observation and accusation when applied to modern society? There are numerous instances where people sacrifice freedom for safety, like in the case of vaccination and immunization programs for students in the United States before attending public schools. The states enforce these programs in the attempt to safeguard and regulate the health of its citizens. Several cases, like the measles outbreak that caused the death of six children among the Faith Tabernacle community as a result of an absence of vaccination, help support and justify the application of these programs by our officials. Some individuals argue though that these programs restrict religious freedoms along with the rights of parents to make choices in regards to their children. These citizens reason by stating that requiring children to do something that is undesirable to their religious principles and practices, like receiving these inoculations, places a significant and unnecessary affliction on their free–exercise rights given to them in the 1st amendment when it states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Recent events over the past few decades, have called for more re–amped security measures and procedures throughout facilities. However, not every company operates on the same level and the position of a security manager may differ from company to company. A security manager for TSA needs to make sure all procedures are being followed according to the standard operating procedures or (SOP). Security deviations are a big concern for security managers. They must act quickly to identify these deviations and come up with plans when noticed. Another key responsibility that a security manager must closely look at is ensuring all procedures are followed accordingly. As a security manager, he or she must ensure that each employee knows all required procedures and is proficient in their tasks. If an employee was to be considered unfit for duty, and the manager allowed them to continue working, this could put the airport in jeopardy. It is apparent, that every security manager has a lot of responsibilities and is considered to be a vital asset to any organization. Security, is the main focus and priority of those that are selected into the position of security manager. At 8:45 in the morning, an American Airlines plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Hundreds of people were killed instantly, and hundreds more were trapped in the burning building. It was thought to be only a freak accident. Less than twenty minutes later, a United Airlines plane crashed into the south tower. It was no longer an accident, but an attack. Later on that morning the third plane hit the Pentagon, and passengers overtook the last plane and crashed it into a field in Pennsylvania. The combined damage from all four planes resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 people, and injuries to another 10,000. Only six people who were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The documentary, "Please Remove Your Shoes," argues that the TSA has grown into a "massive government bureaucracy with too much money" and "focuses on herding people through checkpoints as fast as possible and hires poorly–trained workers who dress up in uniforms and play cop." Steve Elson was a security special agent with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He was hired to attempt to sneak guns, bombs, and other weapons past security. He got through security ninety percent of the time without his weapons being detected. Apparently, Elson said, the FAA did not validate his results because they only wanted him to try to pass security using a certain size gun (Mayerowitz). This reaction from the FAA was unacceptable to Elson because he knew that terrorists are crafty and unpredictable. As long as they have a different size gun than what the FAA planned for, they would more than likely pass security. One of Elson's coworkers, Dzakovic, said that at most airports uncover bombs twenty percent of the time. "'Usually the worse the results were that we had on any given project, the less we were tasked to test to see if they had improved,' Dzakovic said." To Dzakovic and Elson, their managers were incapable of acknowledging that their process might not be perfect. Another critic of the TSA is the House Representative John Mica. Informative Essay On 9 / 11 According to Aaron Smith of CNN, "The Transportation Security Administration said it discovered 3,391 guns in carry–ons at checkpoints in 2016, a 28% increase from the year before. That works out to about nine every day." (Smith 1). As painful as it may be to go through the seemingly never– ending lines at the airport security checkpoints, the TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) is trying their best to stop ALL weapons and unsafe items from potentially traveling into planes, whether on people or in bags. But believe it or not, you did not have to scan your bags or take off your shoes 60 years ago. Airport Security may take a while to get through, but has truly improved because of Southwest Airlines Flight 49, many major technology breakthroughs, and the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Before Southern Airways Flight 49 took off on November 10th, 1972, security was a breeze. "At gunpoint, the plane's crew was forced first to fly to Jackson, Miss., then to Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland, Lexington, Ky., Chattanooga, Tenn., Orlando, Fla., Havana, Key West, Fla., Orlando again, and then finally back to Havana. They [the hijackers] threatened to crash the plane into the Oak Ridge nuclear power plant" (UPI 1). This flight was monumental in history for airport security. • 25. Argumentative Essay On National Security The U.S. Constitution ensures our privilege of security and the privilege to be free from unreasonable search and seizures. But to what degree is unreasonable? I believe that these rights might be misinterpreted depending on the circumstance that is happening. In the event that something is to affect the health and happiness of the common people, in other words, national security. At that point I do believe these rights should to be put on delay for the occasion. I feel that national security is more imperative than protection to a degree. I feel that when all else fails, compromise is unavoidable. There have been an excessive number of "attacks," and some of these attacks could have been avoided, an example of this is when a terrorist enters this country and hurts a large number of individuals. Likewise another argument is that our borders are permitting a huge number of unlawful, unidentified individuals to this country and we don't know what they are prepared to do or what they are capable of. The Transportation Security Administration otherwise called TSA, has a major duty with individuals and National Security. The TSA has a tendency to disregard the protection of U.S Citizens and everybody who visits the United States in light of the fact that the security of everybody's life is at risk. TSA is a major part of American airport security. In a world where such precautions are necessary, the system should be vastly upgraded to actually provide the security it claims to give. Some children dream of acquiring X–Ray vision as a superpower, but did it ever occur to them that it strips a person of their rights and degrades them? Body scanners used in airports put people in a vulnerable state as a naked image of them is captured. Another way TSA attacks an individual's rights is when they are patted down in front of their family or friends and countless strangers. This is the perfect opportunity for the worker to get handsy and grope an innocent person waiting to get on a plane. In the country, the growing rate of police brutality against the young black continues to be an issue. Many blacks had been killed by the police officer for reasons that were not good enough for them to be shot and killed. According to the data collected for the counted, black males aged 15–34 were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by the law enforcement (Jon Swaine and Ciara McCarthy). An example is the case of Freddie Gray who was illegally arrested by the police on Baltimore Street, and was maltreated during the time he was arrested and the time he was taken to the hospital which caused his life because sustained a spinal cord injury. Also, the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson because he stole a cigarette in a store of the area was inappropriate. The punishment that is attributed for stilling cigarette is far from the death penalty. The officer did judge his color and shot him to death. Recently, many other cases like these two mentioned had happened in the black communities, making the blacks to feel unsafe in their country with the law enforcement whose principal roles is to protect them. Today, pilots are authorized to fly with weapons to protect the aircraft, their passengers, and themselves from hijackers and terrorists. It has become a last line of defense in case of a hostile takeover of the aircraft, turning it into a weapon of mass destruction, as we witnessed, during the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center (9/11). It is also very costly to the airlines to have the doors installed. There are also safety concerns. The pilots may become trapped in the cockpit after a crash, or if the door is sealed tightly, it could blow apart during a pressurization loss. Reinforcing the door is still a good idea, and it does act as a deterrent to possible hijackings and it may slow down potential hijackers, but it cannot be relied on 100%. Many people against arming pilots have several reasons to support their objections. One is that a stray bullet could penetrate the skin on the aircraft and cause a catastrophic pressurization loss, which could lead to a crash. However, that is simply not true. The fuselage of an aircraft is made of aluminum alloys, punctures to its surface from a bullet, will only make a hole, and the aircraft's pressurization system would compensate for the small hole. People probably would not even notice the difference in pressurization. This theory was actually played out when a US Airways pilot accidently fired his gun in the cockpit. Thankfully, no one was ... INTRODUCTION In response to the savage attacks orchestrated by foreign terrorist organization Al–Qaeda on September 11, the United States Congress enacted the Homeland Security Act in 2002. This Act established the Department of Homeland Security as an executive department of the United States. The Department of Homeland Security combined 22 different federal agencies into a unified, integrated Department for the purpose of protecting the nation against threats to the homeland. They have put into place many rigorous security check points that are very unnecessary, and mainly just disturb people in the process. Even though there are these security check points, people will always find a way to bypass the system and bring along some type of weapon. Who is the greatest target on a plane? Well in most cases it will be the caption, but how is the caption and co–caption supposed to fend off someone with a weapon? The answer to this question is very clear, you give them a weapon of their own, a firearm. September 11, 2001 was one of the most painful memories that our generation would come to know as a nation. Just for a recap, the September bombings were carried out by 19 terrorist that easily smuggled box– cutters and knives on the plains, they hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the airliners struck the towers of the World Trade Center, while the third struck the Pentagon. The last plane crashed in a rural field in western Pennsylvania, after the passengers bravely fought off the four hijackers (staff). After the towers fell, and thousands of people were killed, airlines across the United States set out an initiative to boost their security, one being to arm the pilots. Three agencies were significantly impacted by these changes and the aftermath of 9/11: Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Federal Air Marshal (FAM). However, 14 years later is important to review the changes which were implemented by sweeping popularity following 9/11 and evaluate their effectiveness. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established by the Aviation and Security Act signed into law on November 19, 2001. The Aviation and Security Act required the TSA complete more than 30 mandates by the end of 2002. In March 2003, TSA was transferred to the newly established Department of Homeland Security from the Department of Transportation (Transportation Security Administration). As of 2014, the TSA has an annual budget of $7.9 Billion and employs 62,000 people. However, there is evidence that the TSA may not be effective based on the cost. George Leef, a Forbes contributor, cited a Government Accountability Office (GAO) regarding the Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT). The SPOT program relies on the premise that government observers in airports can detect individuals who are intent on terrorism based on behavioral clues. The report issued by the GAO states that it is ineffective they concluded: "The subjectivity of the SPOT ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. The Dangers And Limitations Of Homeland Intelligence Homeland security must utilize intelligence gathered to ensure the protection of its borders. Without proper intelligence gathering or strategies homeland security wouldn't be able to perform at its upmost capability. Intelligence communities, fusion centers, and appointed individuals are the cornerstones of how intelligence supports homeland security efforts. The capabilities and limitations of intelligence gathering and dissemination in these areas help ensure American borders are protected. These cornerstones will continue to provide vital intelligence with an ever–growing terrorist threat. This paper will attempt to discuss the capabilities and limitations of these cornerstones and how they support intelligence within the homeland security spectrum. Homeland Security is part of the United States Intelligence Community or known as IC. "The IC works to collect and convey essential security–related information to the president and members of the policymaking, law enforcement, and military communities as they need to carry out their required functions and duties" (Bullock, J. A., Haddow, G. D., Coppola, D. P., & Books24x7, I.) Being apart of the intelligence community allows homeland security the coordination between outer agencies. This in turn provides free following intelligence that contributes to completing each agencies mission. All agencies working within the intelligence community must determine which intelligence may be gathered and how to collect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Dangers Of Airport Security If airport security had the advanced technology they have now back in 2001, there is a possibility that the 9/11 hijacking would have never happened. For years people would plant bombs and weapons on their bodies to prevent it from being found, but with the technology airport security has now there is nowhere to hide weapons without it being detected. " when we stop to give thanks for all our blessings, let's give thanks for the people who spend their days and nights working to stop the terrorist from succeeding– including the men and women of the TSA (thiessen)." Everyone needs to stop and give thanks to the people who spend night and day working to stop terrorist because without them we would have to live in constant fear of surviving flight. People don't realize how blessed they are to have people and organizations like TSA. Airport security has a big impact on people's safety during flight. Since the stand in 2002 Airport security has advanced their technology, and taken steps to secure people's privacy. Since TSA's stand in 2002 they have screened nearly six billion passengers. Their frontline officers have detected thousands of firearms and other countless prohibited items, and prevented those weapons from entering the cabin of the aircraft. In fact, more than 10 years after 9/11, TSA officers still detect, on average, Between three to four firearms everyday in carry–on bags at security checkpoints around the country. • 61. The Security Of The United States Security After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, people in the United States knew that absolutely anything could happen without even thinking about it. This event made the government realize that the United States security was not the best it could be. There always has been security everywhere, but today everything is taken to another level and is being controlled with a great amount of precautions. Now there is a lot more airport security, which will help prevent any more hijacking of planes or bombings. There has also been a lot more security in New York City because of the terrorist attack. There are also new technologies and programs that help with the security of this country. After the attack in 2001, the United States government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Department of Homeland Security had also formed a division to analyze intelligence gathered by the FBI, CIA, and many other police agencies and military agencies (Swanson, Charles R., Territo, Leonard, Taylor, Robert W., 90). Napolitano has played an important role in strengthening border security by increasing forces along the border, and increasing resources and technology to aid in the fight against terrorism (Swanson, Charles R., Territo, Leonard, Taylor, Robert W., 90). The DHS has become an important role to the security of the public in the United States. Within this department, there was a color–coded threat system known as the Homeland Security Advisory System. There was red for severe risk of terrorist attacks, orange for high risk of terrorist attacks, yellow for significant risk of terrorist attacks, blue for general risk of terrorist attacks, and green for low risk of terrorist attacks (Homeland Security News, 2011). • 63. Essay on Guns in the Cockpit Guns in the Cockpit On the morning of September 11, 2001, four airplanes were hijacked and two of them, brought the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. As a result of these attacks on the United States, airports have come to the realization that the only way to prevent another hijacking is by strengthening the security on aircrafts through the cockpit. In order to secure the cockpit and ensure the safety of the passengers on board, guns were introduced as a possible solution in the event of an emergency situation like those that took place in September of 2001. The Transportation Security Administration head John Magaw, announced the administrations position that they are against guns in cockpits and a pilot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the craft was in the air, the terrorists took the initiative and stormed into the cockpit and took over the controls, turning the aircraft into a guided missile (CBS 1). Increasing security immediately became an important aspect of airports shortly there after. Adequate security ensures the safety of the people in the air and citizens on the ground below. It is expected by passengers, that they are boarding a craft that will land safely at their intended destination. An aircraft should be a safe place for everyone and even though every person that enters the airport goes through the required security checkpoints, there is a small fraction of error. Someone will get by with a potential weapon and board the plane along with it; therefore, the captains should have some form of a rear–view mirror (Press 2). One of the many proposals made since the attacks is installing video cameras in the cabin to monitor passenger activity for any possible terrorist actions. A pilot should be aware of what is happening to the plane and the passengers on board at all times. In a situation where someone is trying to hijack an airplane, there are three factors needed to be assessed. Does the terrorist have a weapon, are they attacking alone, and is he or she a trained fighter in the case of a Federal Air Marshal interfering (APSA 2)? They're meant to be mysterious figures who only show themselves when they're needed. • 67. Persuasive Essay On How To Stop Terrorism Imagine it's 2001 you are just taking a leisurely walk in Stonycreek. You hear the sounds of the city planes, cars, people, " BOOM!". You look across the street you see the twin towers and to planes. You start to run. Once you're far enough you watch them burn. Now everything is more loud. This is no ordinary walk in New York City. I chose this topic for two reasons. For one it is something that happens a lot and it gets talked about a lot and it's is being planned out every single day. This makes it good to look back on and be on top of. Two it is a very interesting topic to me. It is something that happens a lot and that means that there is more to learn about it. My driving question was how could we make peace or stop terrorism. This question is very simple yet puzzling to figure out. It would be hard to change the minds of all the terrorist groups. With all of the research I have gathered and thinking a lot about this topic I have figured that it would be hard to figure out a solution, although it could be done. Terrorism is when people do harmful and violent things things that are done for reasons such as religious, political, or ideological goals and or reasons. Terrorism is a worldwide problem that affects everyone whether you're in an attack or not. For example the attacks of 9/11 changed the life of all the people. 3,000 people were killed and more than 400 police officers and firefighters were injured or killed. This would be lost loved ones. • 69. The Transportation Safety Act Of 9 / 11 : Aviation And... Two months after the 9/11 attacks, congress passed Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and federalized airports. Prior to 9/11 airport security was outsourced to private companies with very lackadaisical regulations. The TSA and the Federal Air Marshall Service (FAMs). 9/11 affected all aspects of travel, even railways. Since 9/11there have been multiple attacks against transit systems including Moscow, Madrid and London by terrorist cells either affiliated or sympathetic to al Qaeda. President George W. Bush signed into effect the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). FAMs have been protecting aircrafts for well over fifty (50) years, ever since the first recorded aircraft hijacking that took place Peru on February 21st 1931. The position has been intricately woven into the fabric of aviation history. Modern day FAM's job is to have the ability to blend in with passengers at the airport and while onboard an aircraft. They rely on their extensive training, which includes investigative techniques, behavior recognition, firearms proficiency and close quarters self–defense measures to protect the flying public. Marksmen standards place an air marshal within the top 1% of all shooters in the world. Prior to 9/11 only 33 officers were working at full time capacity, after 9/11 600 officers were activated for duty and thousands more followed. IRTPA allowed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take over the pre–flight comparisons/screening of airline passenger information from several watchlists for international and domestic flights. TSA developed the Secure Flight program which was introduced in August of 2009 to matches passenger information against watch lists maintained by the federal government. Airline personnel were given the right to demand government–issued ID be shown if ordered by the TSA to do so, but those orders are to remain confidential so there is no oversight as to when the airline has been ordered to request ID and when they are requesting it on their own imperative Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response team (VIPR) was also introduced by the TSA to allow for clear communication and ... • 71. Counter Terrorism Alternatives By James Penney. English... Counter Terrorism Alternatives James Penney English Composition II Nikkele Shelton 25 August 2014 Counter Terrorism Alternatives In today's day and age, the fear of terrorism is not only a common sentiment, but is also a rising subject of debate. In order to keep troops out of harm's way, the United States has looked for alternate means of combatting terrorist organizations. Since September 11, 2001 the United States has relied heavily on its men and women in uniform to prevent terrorism abroad. Technology of today and the use of intelligence offer the United States alternate means of addressing terrorism. For instance, drone strikes were called by former US CIA director Leon Panetta, "the only game in town in term of confronting or trying to disrupt the Al Qaeda leadership" (ODLE, 2013). With the use of typology, socioeconomic assistance, drones, diplomatic engagement and enhanced airline security services, the use of military force is not the only way to prevent terrorism. If our country wants to never send another son or daughter to war then we must first understand who the terrorists are. Former President George Bush said "we fight against poverty because hope is an answer to terror" (Lee 2011). On the other hand, there are studies that say the opposite, that terrorism is not related to poverty. Poverty and education are very important factors of what violence occurs. The lower the poverty and education the increased chances for violence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Impact Of Aviation On The United States "You haven't seen a tree until you have seen its shadow from the sky." Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly a solo nonstop trans–Atlantic aircraft, spoke these words about the joys of flight in 1932. She and others, such as Orville and Wilbur Wright, Charles H. Lindbergh, and Frank Whittle, recognized early on how aviation would change our view of the world. Since these early discoveries of aviation, society has relied on flight as a primary means for safe transportation. This feeling of security was challenged on September 11, 2001, when nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners and aimed the planes at targets in the United States. These terrorists' attacks, referred to as 9/11, created the need for improved airport and airline security and reformed the United States Government's entire security strategy and infrastructure. Aviation has long existed as target for criminals, mentally deranged, and more recently, terrorists. John Graham blew up United DC–6 over Colorado in 1955 with twenty–five sticks of dynamite in his suitcase. In the 1960s, hijackers would commonly take over flights and divert them to Cuba. The government responded by developing laws with tougher penalties. On November 24, 1971, D.B.Cooper had a bomb with him on the plane and passed a note to the flight attendant explaining that he would detonate the bomb if he were not given $200,000. After receiving the ransom, he forced the plane to take off again, parachuted out of the aft door, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Essay on War on Terror On september 11, 2001 there was an attack on America. Four airplanes were hijacked, two were crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the third crashed into the Pentagon in D.C. and the fourth got stopped by a passenger. It was the first terrorist attack on the U.S. soil. Thousands of lives were lost that day. This attach was the most devastating act of belligerence on U.S territory since the Civil War (Terrorism, 2011). This even had an enormous influence on America and its history. It led to numerous short and long term effects. On September 20, 2001, former president George W. Bush announced publicly that he declares "War on Terror". After this announcement, our country has altered. To determine if an effect was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... TSA is able to open and search passenger's luggage for security screening, not many people like this ability. In some cases the agents don't replace the locks or close them properly. TSA has two companies make different kinds of locks that can be opened and relocked by special tools and information by the manufacturer. A positive side to this note is that if a passengers TSA approved lock is missing they can file a claim with form SF–95. (Security, 2010) People get irritated by this, because no one wants people going through their personal belongings. Despite the fact that this is a simple way to detect if someone is carrying a bomb, any other type of explosives or anything else that could be dangerous boarding a plane. In the beginning of November 2010 TSA added new screening procedures. The new screening procedures were created because of the reactions of the "Underwear bomber". That person smuggled plastic explosives onto and airplane in December 2009. These procedures include the backscatter X– ray and the sliding pat–downs. The backscatter X–ray displays images of passenger's bodies. During sliding pat–downs officers screen passenger's breast, buttocks and genitals with the back of their hand. All pat–downs are done by a TSA officer of same gender of that passenger. And if requested the procedure can be done in a private room. So when Lou goes to deliver the food to the golden–haired woman he is rude to her; telling her he will basically put her food in her ashtray if she doesn't move it.
