William Craft House And Slave Dwelling
Introduction
Incorporating Mississippi Works Progress Administration Slave Narratives, the diary of Emma
Finley, and excerpts of the Finley family cookbook from 1858 with artifact evidence found at the
Hugh Craft House from the foundation repair in 2008 and excavation artifacts from Fall 2014 and
Spring 2015, together, will give a greater insight to the foodways of the Craft family and slaves
residing on the site. The purpose of this paper is to examine the artifacts collected, cataloged, and
analyzed thus far from the Hugh Craft house and slave dwelling site and compare the findings to
analysis of slave diets throughout the south up until 1860 to determine if the Hugh Craft family and
their nine slaves shared food or food patterns.
Background
Hugh Craft travelled from Georgia to Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1839. In 1851, Craft rebuilt the
main house, but kept the original slave dwelling structure that dates to the early 19th century The
slave dwelling, still standing, was used as a detached kitchen from the early 19th century up until
possibly the Great Depression or later. According to a United States census record, during the 1860s
Craft owned nine slaves; two adult females, ages 28 and 25, five male slaves, ages 16, 15, 9, 3, and
one age not legible, and two female children, ages 12 and 64. Hugh Craft owned higher than the
average urban slave dwelling, usually having 1–3 slaves . A 1850s United States census record
shows that the Craft family included Hugh Craft,

Essay on Symbolism in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman
Symbolism in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman is
wrought with symbolism from the opening scene. Many symbols illustrate the themes of success
and failure. They include the apartment buildings, the rubber hose, Willy's brother Ben, the tape
recorder, and the seeds for the garden. These symbols represent Willy's attempts to be successful and
his impending failure. When Willy and Linda purchased their home in Brooklyn, it seemed far
removed form the city. Willy was young and strong and he believed he had a future full of success.
He and his sons cut the tree limbs that threatened his home and put up a hammock that he would
enjoy with his children. The green fields ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His wife Linda, who finds the hose, knows what he was going to do with it, as does Biff. When
confronted by Biff, Willy not only denies that he was going to use the hose, but also denies ever
seeing it before. Instead of being remembered as a successful businessman who died, Willy is seen
by his family as a failure who cannot even commit suicide or tell the truth. Willy's brother Ben
seems to symbolize all of Willy's dreams that have not borne fruit. Ben provides an example of the
type of success that Willy desires. Ben went into the "jungle" with nothing and became extremely
wealthy. Ben achieved in a few years what Willy has dreamed about his entire life. Ben also
provides additional evidence on the foolish behavior and poor decisions made by Willy. Ben offers
to take Willy with him and make him rich – an offer that Willy declines. Another important symbol
is Howard's tape recorder. It represents the many material objects wealthy businessmen could
provide for their families and for themselves. Willy wanted this lifestyle; he wanted "something he
could lay his hands on" (Miller pg. ). It would not be enough to just be successful; Willy wanted to
be able to show people material representations of his success. The tape recorder shows that Howard
has reached this level of success. Yet while the recorder symbolizes the wealth and power of
Howard, it also represents Willy's discouragement and

The Worst Death Trap, Killing Fourteen Italian Immigrants
On March 13, 1900, a tenement building in New York City caught fire, killing fourteen Italian
immigrants. The poorly constructed frame building housed three stories of tenement quarters, with
ten apartments per floor. The rooms were five by ten feet, separated only by flimsy half–inch thick
boards. With just one exit through the entrance of the building, and that only by way of a 42–inch
wide stairway, their only escape was destroyed, leaving eleven families of "caged victims beyond
help." People became so desperate that they jumped from upper balconies as the firemen on the
scene struggled to control the flames. The top floor proved to be the deadliest, with a victim in
nearly all ten rooms. After the arrest of a suspect and an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Connected to these changes were rapidly declining sanitary conditions in tenement housing and
rising prices. Immigrants came to America with visions of "streets paved in gold" and a chance to
rise through hard work. Americans who had lived longer in the country and who harbored rabid
anti–immigrant sentiments greeted them with derision and abuse. They saw immigrants as
competition in an already dwindling job market, and bearers of the dreaded Catholicism, socialism,
communism, and other "foreign evils." Social Darwinism, in vogue at the time, only compounded
the problems of the poor. Darwin's work in animal dominance was translated into social beliefs that
benefitted successful businessmen and capitalist bullies. Social Darwinism claimed that the wealthy
were dominant because they were superior, and the poor were so because they were inherently
flawed. The effect of this theory was that no help was offered to the poor because they deserved
none, and there was no call to level the playing field because the rich had triumphed through natural
selection. With more and more people pouring into the major industrialized cities, new arrivals were
forced (often tricked) into cheap and dirty tenement housing in the more dangerous areas of town, in
order to afford bare subsistence in a society already glutted with humanity and twisted notions about
nationality. Tenement fire stories permeated newspaper reports

Inside The Closet
Skeletons in the Closet
Our first experience of this old English term came about not as secrets in a person's past but in a
house! Over the years, we have lived in a variety of old homes that embody the history of many
families and diverse activities. Among those homes was an old three–story English–style rooming
house in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that was owned by the Anglican Theological College of
Emmanuel and St. Chad. Shirley and I had a "flat" on the third floor with four single girls living
above us and a single eligible theological professor/Priest below us! Not only were the upper floors
busy but we also had a presence living in the basement that from time to time would enter into our
community life. Special care was taken by all of us to ensure we did not have a prankster amongst
us so we made sure to ascertain that the occurrences were confirmed by more than one person and
that they had happened more than one time to different people. Often we would hear the horn on my
bicycle give a blast at different times of the day. Something or someone had to squeeze the rubber
bulb to force the air through the reed on that horn! During a small dinner party hosted by the
professor, the pictures on the wall shifted on their nails, and there was no vibration on the floors
from music, dancing, or any kind of enthusiastic activity! More than one person experienced

If I asked you to conjure up an image of a modern American Jewish celebration, chances are you
would picture the stereotypical circle dance with the catchy, repetitive song chanting "Hava Nagila".
But can this dance, the hora (h) 1, truly be classified as Jewish? In this paper, I will examine the
voyage the hora traveled during the 1880s from Romania to Israel, where newly settled Jewish
immigrants adopted it as their own ("Israel"). Roughly forty years later, Baruch Agadati, a Jewish
choreography, modified the Romania hora, allowing Eastern Europeans the opportunity to use the
dance as a vehicle to create their new identity within Israel. The performance of this new dance in
the first 1944 Dalia Festival was a catalyst for the Israeli folk ... Show more content on

The festival was located in the Kibbutz Dalia in the northern region of Israel and took place over the
span of two days, despite the hesitance of some (Friedhaber, 1985). With the news of the horrific
Holocaust and the reality of the European Jews, many people advised for the festival to come to a
standstill (Friedhaber, 1985; Ingber). Nevertheless, Kadman continued on with her plan, providing
the alternative name of the Davka Festival. She decided to co–name the festival that because
"davka" means "in spite of or signifying resistance and an indomitable spirit" (Friedhaber, 1985).
The festival was the critical public display that further kindled the spread of the Hora Agadati that
eventually revolutionized into the Israeli Horah. Alongside the Hora Agadati, Kadman recruited a
mixture of a few Israeli dances that were also newly constructed, in addition to copious foreign folk
dances that she saw around the country (Rosenblit; Roginsky). Approximately 3,500 visitors from
all over Israel came to watch the 200 dancers, as well as participate in classes where they could
learn the dances (Kaschl; Friedhaber, 1985). I declare that the production of the festival, resisting to
be quieted by World War II and the destruction of European Jewry, acknowledged the Israeli
nationality while still representing the European countries many of the dancers and audience

The Dancing Plague Of 1518 Essay
Emily De La Hunt Reilly 03/28/17 The Dancing Plague of 1518 The dancing plague of 1518 was an
outburst of a large amount of villagers that were agressively dancing unwillingly for days on end
until they died of exhaustion, dehydration, or strokes. Some theories were suggested to diagnos the
reason for how the dancing plague occured. The theories proposed were mass panic and hysteria,
ergot fungus injestion, the victims were in a trance, or that their religion and beliefs, in some way,
generated the dancing plague. It's difficult to imagine that people were able to dance for several days
with bruised and bloody feet. However, it's easier to believe if it were known that the people
involved weren't completely conscious of what they were doing. The villagers were observed to be

Mass hysteria, also known as moral panic, can be created by panic and worry. Moral panic is a fear
that grips a large number of people that something is threatening society. Strasbourg, Alsace was an
area where many people were in poverty and in despairation for money, food, and shelter area (
"Mystery Explained? 'Dancing Plague' of 1518, the Bizarre Dance That Killed Dozens." Digital
Journal: A Global Digital Media Network). Mass hysteria is defined as an imagined or assumed
threat that causes physical symptoms among a large number of people. The towns in medieval times
were much smaller than in modern day places, which could explain why so many people were
involved out of the entire village. The dancing epidemic of 1518 fits in the category of mass hysteria
and could explain why so many were effected (Mass Hysteria & Moral Panic: Definitions, Causes &

Blue Winds Dancing By Tom Whitecloud
Search for Self in Blue Winds Dancing
Blue Winds Dancing by author Tom Whitecloud, is narrated by the story's unnamed main character.
The young Indian man's persona is brought to life through his own recollection and spoken words.
We recognize the turmoil this character faces as he is away from "his people," attending college in
White man's society. He doubts his place in either world, believes he must choose between them,
and realizes finally that being an Indian is only one part of who he is. Through his thoughts, actions
and words we gain understanding of this character's attitudes of confusion and inferiority in his
struggle to define his niche in society.
The character's feelings of not belonging are represented in his ... Show more content on

"It seems as though I were among people I have never seen before"(122) are his words as he enters
the lodge where they have gathered to celebrate Christmas.
The character shows definite signs of bitterness toward White men and their attitude of superiority.
He scoffs at the organization of their society and calls it "a beauty of captivity"(119). A mere
existence where freedom and individuality have given way to a life of dictated regulation. "Here
where all the orange trees line in military rows, and endlessly bear fruit"(119). The young man does
not want to be another "orange tree" whose life is decided by the conforming ways of their society,
"dancing to the strings of custom and tradition"(119).
What then is he striving for? He tells us of the beauty and calm of his homeland, and how much he
desires to be back among his people and the simplicity and freedom of their lifestyle, but he is also
angry that his people are forced to live such a menial existence. "I feel suddenly angry that my
people should have to do such things for a living"(120). This is what is at the core of his struggle,
the supposition that he has to choose between living as an inferior Indian with their "freedoms," or
parallel the rigid, dictated life that he feels the white men live. It is the reason he feels alone among
the pines.
It is after talking to some hobos and bums on the train that that the young man starts to realize what
his sociology professor was trying to tell

Rape Fantasies Analysis
In Margaret Atwood's Rape Fantasies, the narrator Estelle describes her "rape fantasies" in which is
never assaulted. Initiated by a conversation with her coworkers about their controversial daydreams,
Estelle recounts her own reoccurring visions, though hers differ from those discussed between the
women. Throughout the piece, Atwood utilizes stream of conscious writing to show her narrator's
jumbled thoughts as she describes her "fantasies." Atwood's short story depicts a narrator
inexperienced in courtship and meeting men, as Estelle's honest and seemingly endless stream of
thoughts highlight her critical view of women she knows well and explain daydreams in which she
meets and (hopes to) build relationships with unfamiliar men. As a whole, Atwood's use of longer
sentences and stream of consciousness emphasize the narrator's disorganized and honest opinions.
Within the first few pages, the narrator voices her inner, cynical thoughts about her female
colleagues. She describes Chrissy the receptionist as being "[v]arnished" and "like she's been
painted over with nail polish" (Atwood 1). When Greta, a coworker, makes a comment about
another's concern for being out late at night, Estelle reveals, "[Greta] worked in Detroit for three
years and she never lets you forget it, it's like she thinks she's a war hero or something, we should all
admire her just for the fact that she's still walking this earth" (Atwood 2). She continues criticizing

The House On Mango Street And The Things They Carried
What's the difference between a young Hispanic girl and a soldier in the Vietnam War? It sounds
like a bad joke with an even worse punchline, but though there may be many true answers to this
question, there are more similarities than one might imagine. These similarities can be observed in
Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and their
main characters, Esperanza and O'Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non–chronological
stories, both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of
returning for the people they left behind. At their most basic levels, The House on Mango Street and
The Things They Carried are both broken down into stories, which, although some reference events
and characters in other stories, do not follow a definite chronological order. The title story in The
Things They Carried, for instance, places its characters in the Vietnam war, but in no specific year of
the war, or place in Vietnam. The next story, "Love," begins with the words "Many years after the
war" (O'Brien 26), placing it definitely outside of Vietnam–in O'Brien's home in Massachusetts, in
fact. The next story, "Spin," however, goes back to the men of Alpha Company together in Vietnam.
O'Brien even makes it easy to guess that the focus is back on Vietnam, as the first sentence of this
story is "The war wasn't all terror and violence" (O'Brien 30). The stories in The House on Mango

Critical Appreciation Of Izu No Odoriko
With his publication of "Izu no Odoriko" in 1926, Yasunari Kawabata gained recognition for his
work. In this story, Kawabata tells the story of a student who is traveling along the Izu peninsula.
During his travels, he meets a group of traveling performers and decides to travel amongst them.
During his time with the performers, he is able to experience a life different from his student life in
Tokyo. An image that Kawabata repeatedly presents is a drum. The student tries to listen for the
drum whenever he is alone. To the student, the sound of the beating drum signifies that his time with
the traveling performers has yet come to an end. With its high popularity, "Izu no Odoriko" was
translated twice by two different translators during different time periods. The first translation was
done by Edward Seidensticker in 1954. The second translation was done by J. Martin Holman in
1997. Though both Seidensticker and Holman translated the same story, there is still difference in
their translations. With the imagery of the drum, Holman and Seidensticker relay a difference in the
intensity of emotion; furthermore, with the analyzation from Tobias, it can be seen why each
translator conveys a difference in emotion. Throughout "Izu no Odoriko" Kawabata repeatedly
mentions the drum that the young dancer uses in her performances. To the student, the sound of the
drum reminds him of the performers. On a subconscious level, the drum reminds the student that his

Fences By August Wilson: Summary And Analysis
Fences is a two act play written by August Wilson. Act One is four scenes long; Act Two is five. The
play starts with Troy and Bono's payday. Troy and Bono go to Troy's house to hang around like they
do every week. Troy is in a dispute with his boss, because he asked why the black workers are only
allowed to pick up the trash instead of driving the trucks. Bono thinks Troy is cheating on Rose,
while Cory has been scouted by a college football team because he's a kickass footballer; Troy, his
dad, was in the Negro Leagues, and is bitter that he never got a shot at the Major Leagues because
he was out of his prime when they started accepting black players. Troy gives a dramatic retelling of
his death battle in July 1943. Rose reminds Troy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cory comes home and is pissed off because Troy told his football coach that he can't play on the
team. Troy basically tells Cory that he needs to learn his place, and that his disrespect is "strike

Troy bails Uncle Gabriel out of jail. Bono and Troy work on the fence. Bono explains the reason
behind Rose wanting a fence; she wants to keep her family "close to her love". Troy tells Bono what
he already knew; he is cheating on Rose with Alberta. Troy tells Rose about the hearing over
whether Gabriel should be sent to an asylum, then tells her about the whole cheating situation, and
Rose says that Troy takes and doesn't give. Troy gets physical with Rose, and Cory defends his
mom, which ends up with him getting beat by Troy in a fight. Troy says that it's "strike two" for
Cory.
Six months later, Troy says he is going to the hospital because Alberta is in labor; she has a baby girl
but dies during childbirth. Gabriel is taken off the the asylum; Rose tells Troy this before he leaves
for the hospital. Troy dares Death to come get him after he finishes the fence. Troy brings he and
Alberta's baby, Raynell, home, and Rose agrees to raise her as if she were her own, but will no

Magyar Alternate Ending
Like many houses in the village, the Magyar farm had an odor of damp, earthy, rotting soil and
fungus when you entered. A pungent odor of mushrooms and metallic water, almost as if the village
homes were decaying slowly back into the earth and becoming part of the valley soil. As with many
feudal villages in the rural areas of Hungary, Tasani's Hansel and Gretel style, adobe homes featured
thatched roofs and were fenced by sticks and branches used as fencing to keep the livestock in.
Inside, the rooms were dark, dank, with rotted wood beams across the ceilings and grayed adobe
walls.

Sometime after midnight, Ava's father stood up reeling from the vodka. He clutched the farmer's
dining table in the middle of the house, lit by candlelight and steadied himself. But, the hand–made

benches blended with everything else in the adobe cottage. The lights seemed to sway and the world
became as gray as a ghost. And then, he keeled over and collapsed on the

Misconceptions In 'Rape Fantasy' By Estelle
What is your rape fantasy?
"Rape fantasies" illustrates the misconceptions pop culture taught society and women about rape
through the reoccurring irony and vulnerability theme. Throughout the story, the narrator named
Estelle speaks in first person with her coworkers as they share their sexual fantasies. The excerpt
conversation begins with Chrissy when she asks, "What are your rape fantasies?" To put the word
rape and fantasy in the same sentence is erroneous because there is nothing fantasizing about being
forced against your will. The story proves that women are mentally unprepared for a life–threatening
situation. Estelle has a comical tone through out the excerpt, "you know? RAPE, TEN THINGS TO

beginning, she sounded insensitive towards the idea of rape and her absurd fantasies surrounding it
but this quote proved her invulnerability and ironic theme in the story because she realized that she
is no longer in control of the situation and the man has power over her because they could still go
ahead with the rape. Another ironic fantasy is when she ends up falling in love with the man that

The Cause Of The Dancing Plague Of 1518
The Dancing Plague of 1518 was an occurrence of unknown origin. Although still unsolved, there
have been theories published on the subject. The theories that have been brought to light are mass
hysteria caused by St. Vitus, Ergotism, Tarantism, and an unknown type of heretical cult. None of
these ideas are able to truly explain the abrupt Dancing Plague that occurred in Strasbourg. This is
not the first time this type of event has occurred. Dancing epidemics have also occurred in other
areas of Europe in earlier centuries, but without the same deadly outcome as the 1518 plague. The
most popular theory on the cause of 1518's Dancing Plague is the mass hysteria theory. John Waller,
a firm supporter of this theory, was able to give very convincing evidence. Although the mass
hysteria has more creditable evidence, it is still not capable of being the exact cause for the Dancing
Plague. The Dancing Plague may be thought of as a faux tale, but there are multiple records to prove
that this occurrence is nowhere near a tale passed on through centuries. The Dancing Plague was and
still is one of the most mysterious events in the 16th century. The Dancing Plague occurred in
Strasbourg in July, 1518. It all began with a woman named Frau Troffea, who began dancing
uncontrollably in the middle of the streets. She did this night and day on her own without stopping
for nearly a week. The disease began to spread to three–dozen other victims after a week of Frau
Troffea's solo dancing. By

Dancing At Lughnasa Essay
The Many Faces of Dance in Rural Ireland – Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa Undoubtedly, dance
is deeply rooted in Irish culture. This connection is portrayed by the Irish dramatist Brian Friel in
Dancing at Lughnasa, where it has a crucial role. The play depicts the daily lives of five sisters from
the point of view of Michael, the son of one of them. In his dramatic narrative, he describes a
number of events in which dancing is present in some form. At first glance, the function of dance in
the story appears uncomplicated – it serves as a form of entertainment for the sisters – yet on close
analysis, it is noticeable that is only one of many. Since the ancient times, dancing was one of the
simplest ways of enjoyment available to humans, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Bellybag, the place of broken dreams, where people struggle to make a living, dancing takes
away the pain of having no career prospects, being alone and not satisfied with life. This is
especially true for the sisters, as not even one of them has a successful life or even a husband. For
instance, Maggie – the most cheerful character in the play, who often makes jokes – while she is not
giving away her sadness directly, the reader can feel a certain sense of longing for youth. Dance
reminds her of the competitions she used to take part in when she was young. She misses being
admired and also, she is tired of living mundane life, without any joy or reward for the hard work.
Obviously, she sees dance as the means to escape her duties and woes and she is the one who
initiated dance in few scenes, for example at the beginning, when she managed to make all sisters
dance, even Kate, who was the most reluctant. She is not waiting to be asked for a dance and takes
the opportunity to asks Gerry to dance, too. Rose, the most naïve of the Mundy, thinks that the
invitation for the Lughnasa dance is a proof for being loved by Danny, one of the local men, who is
already married. She misinterprets her sisters' concern as jealously. Agnes, who has the closest
emotional connection with Rose, and is the one who worries about her the most, is downcast for the
most part, yet in dance she shows true happiness. As for Kate, who keeps all her feelings hidden
under her cold demeanour and who protests against dancing, it is the source of a conflict. On the one
hand, it is sometimes visible that she also secretly wants to dance, yet her experience, religion and
bitter character makes her think, it is

Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atwood Analysis
Utilizing Involvements: Manipulation of Human Deterioration During the short story presented by
Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided
displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as the bud to
which spawned his son, Douglas, as Douglas demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of
human persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape
Fantasies" (1977), expresses a group of individuals whom talk about a magazine and turns it into a
conversational masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who
take at their own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally
baseless beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through
enjoyment of viewing individual demise and through request to be deprived. Therefore, it is in these
shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the situation for
abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with removal of
self–endangerment at the basis of discussion.
The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these
events, whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more
formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as a conversation with lead in
typical avenues of expression provides stagnation of potential solutions to a reoccurring or present
problem. Through the usage of intellectual discussion among other counterparts, there can be an
elimination of the habitual inactivity of assorted thinking. Moreover, ignorance in the debate of
reason primes individuals to go on their own volition to seek out these events such as the perfect
rape as impulse obscures the repercussions and allows for completion of such task in mind. Rogue
sources of media collude in a larger aspect, to fleeting expressions of enjoyment that initiate these
wandering minds to falsified reasoning. It is, in our part of society, not to restrict the inbound media

Artistic Voice Essay
Artistic Voice
Authors have a distinct identity that you recognize when you read their work of art. The qualities
and aspects of a text that give an author a distinct identity as an artist are known as their artistic
voice. Denise Levertov and Anne Sexton both use different themes in their poetry that separate them
from other poets. Denise Levertov writes about the unknown and the unsaid in life. Anne Sexton
distinguishes herself by writing about her family, loves, and her emotional tragedies. Sandra
Cisneros wrote a novel called The House on Mango Street that contained a different setup than most
novels. It was written in fragments and the language was straightforward. Cisneros focuses on the
importance of freethinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meaning those problems that occur in the marriage will not just disappear when you kiss and make
up. In the second stanza she is using communion to express how a spouse if looking for
communication with their partner and is being turned away "each by each." Levertov refers to
society as a leviathan in the third stanza. She also talks about how the couple is looking for joy in
their relationship, but they do not want it to be known that things are not working out with them. In
the last stanza Levertov uses to "the ark of" to explain the survival of marriage. Everyone feels that
marriage is a delightful experience; choosing to ignore the reality of struggles that relationships
must deal with. Levertov took the one–sided view that people hold of marriage and exemplified the
realistic problems that people tend to forget.
When Anne Sexton writes her poetry she writes to make the reader feel what she is writing. Sexton
tends to write about her own experiences and events in other women's lives. In Anne Sexton's
Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward, she uses a language to express a mother's pain and anger after
she gave birth to her fatherless child:
And now that's that. There is nothing more that I can say or lose.

Essay on Two Ageing Theories and Examples
There are two theories of ageing. The disengagement theory is when the elderly unfortunately start
to give up with activities or social life. They become withdrawn from society. This is when you
disengage from any way of contact or interaction. The reason for disengagement theory may be
because physical functions deteriorate. There are three phases of disengagement theory. These are
shrinkage of life space is when you are not working or have no contact with friends and family. You
don't get to meet new people. You decide not to take up any hobbies or activities. The second phase
is increased individuality. This is when you become independent and what others do does not matter
to you. The third phase is acceptance. You start to accept ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The activity theory is when you will carry on with any activities or interests that you will have. This
is to stay physically and mentally active. You may start to disengage with some things such as
leaving job or leaving family however you will start new activities that you may have an interest in.
A theory is an explanation or reason for that fact.
In 1966 Bromley argued that people do engagement but need to remain active in order to prevent
disengagement to cause major problems. He said that it is important to have an interest in some
activities because being disengaged can have an effect on an individual and lead them to isolation
and depression.
A theory of ageing is a explanation or reason for the natural cause of ageing. It explains the changes
a person goes through when they age. Theories can be proved or sided by laws and facts and tested
hypotheses.
Disengagement theory
An example of disengagement theory is when a pensioner quits his job or does not take up any
hobbies. They may just stay at home and not even socialise with friends and family.
Advantages of the disengagement theory are people can start to rest and not worry about anything.
They become independent and take their mind off things. This may be because they are
understandable that it is the final stages of life so they may want to be independent and not do
anything. However there are many disadvantages of the disengagement theory. When a person
disengages, they are

Dancing At Lughnasa Analysis
Brian Friel's play Dancing at Lughnasa uses the effect of absence and presence to create a heartfelt
and tense 'memory play' set in Ireland in the summer of 1936. Michael lives with his mother and
four aunts, along with his Uncle recently returned from Africa. Friel's choice to have an absence of a
strong family unit is important and it will be considered how this sets the tone for the play. Next,
this essay will go on to examine the way the characters unfulfilled desires add to the overall effect of
the play. Poverty is apparent in the Mundy household and through the presence of hardship Friel
represents the socioeconomic environment in Ireland. Continuing to consider the Ireland represented
in the play this essay will look at the way the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key themes of the play are each affected by the dramatist's balance of what is explicitly
explored and what is not. The emotions of love and loss are not openly portrayed yet are present all
the same. Each sister has a romantic unfulfilled fantasy, yet is constrained by her position in society
and the financial situation of the Mundy household. The conflicts of society are also expressed by
Friel in the way paganism and Catholicism are both present yet neither holds force in the household.
In terms of society Friel also makes subtle nods to mass Irish emigration. The absence of many
things in the play offers a bleak output yet underneath there is an optimistic tone, that dancing

Dancing Plague Of 1518 Research Paper
The dancing plague of 1518 was a mysterious event that nobody could explain. However we have a
theory. The dancing plague of 1518 was just a huge lie. They most likely had some people dancing
at certain times to keep up the act. Everyone in the town either believed it or was in on the lie. Some
people may believe that the dancers were part of some kind of cult, however if that was the case
some people would have stopped dancing. A few people assume that they must have been threatened
to kill the dancers if they were to stop dancing; but with so many people dancing there must have
been at least one that would have escaped and maybe have spilled the beans. Seeing as nobody ever

Although if you were to see so many people having spasms would they all be in the same place, and
even more reason to not include yourself in the idiotic theory is spasms don't appear to look like

simply to toy with citizens, confuse them, possibly distract them from the horrible events or perhaps
even to draw attention from a crime that was taking place. So now you know exactly what happened

Home Sweet Home
For many home could be defined as the physical spaces we inhabit. However, for others home is
defined in a deeper level that relates to the relationships we have or want to have with people. Home
could be categorized in micro and macro levels. The micro level could reflect on the immediate
situation in where we find ourselves such as the terrestrial space where we dwell in, the people we
live with, etc. On the other hand, in the macro level home may perhaps refer to a broader idea of self
that characterize us, such as the country we come from, the culture we were brought up in, etc.
While the meaning of the word home is relative and based on personal opinions, architecture is a
tool that could help us create an identity of what we consider home to be since it reflects physical,
historical, and social conditions of the physical reality we live in. I live in the 7th floor of an
apartment building with my family. Although this type of housing is quite common in this area, our
home has some peculiar features that I have discovered recently. Because of its placement and small
architectural cues this residence acts like a physical bookmark of a period in New York's history that
I have only recently been able to register and appreciate thanks to my newfound architectural
knowledge.
New York is known for its skyscrapers; however, there is architectural diversity that does not only

Jewish Folk Dance As A Means Of Creating A New Israeli...
Jewish national identity was colonized when Jewish people were forced out of ancient Israel and
dispersed to various different nations. Anti–Semitism was one of the principle means for this
colonization because it made it dangerous for Jewish people to express their own national identity in
the European nations they dispersed to. As a result, certain traditions, like Jewish folk dance, which
were not codified, were lost. Jewish folk dance also disappeared because folk traditions are strongly
connected to the land in which they originated and the majority of Jews left Israel. Furthermore,
because of the third commandant of the Torah, Jews were not allowed to depict images of their
dance. Consequently, their traditional dance was lost forever. However, when the Jews returned to
Israel in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they found it important to recreate traditions like folk
dance to reassert their fractured nationhood after so many years of diaspora. Thus, Israeli folk dance
was a means of creating a new Israeli culture.
Israeli folk dance was created by using elements from other dance cultures with themes and music
of modern Israel. In this paper, I will argue that while anti–Semitism resulted in the colonization of
Jewish national identity, women re–created Israeli folk dance as a means to establish a new Jewish
identity, as well as an identity for themselves. By focusing on Romania and Yemen, we will identify
the vestiges of colonialism in Israeli folk dance, and

Overcrowding and Housing in Nineteenth–Century London
From 1801 to 1851, the population of London grew from under 1 million inhabitants to 2.25 million.
This was due in large part to immigration, both from other countries and from the countryside of
England. Hundreds of thousands of people were moving to the newly industrialized cities and towns
to find work, having been squeezed off the land because of the enclosure of farms. There was also
displacement of the working–class within the city of London because of a number of construction
projects. There were street improvement schemes in which tenements were razed in order to widen
the passages. The transformation of part of the city into a non–residential district devoted to finance

One of every three inhabitants of flats of 4 or less rooms, irrespective of class, were overcrowded. In
1866, the Sanitary Act defined overcrowding as less than 400 cubic feet for each adult living in a
room day and night, or 300 cubic feet for a sleeping room. For children, these dimensions were
halved. This means that a man, woman, and one child living in a room 8'x10'x10' would be
considered overcrowded. For statistical and census purposes, the London City Council ignored cubic
capacity, and counted anything beyond two people per room as overcrowded. Hector Gavin, a
lecturer in forensic medicine at Charing Cross Hospital estimated that if all the windows and doors
of a typical laborers tenement were shut(against the cold, for example), the maximum length a man
could survive before all available oxygen was consumed was seven hours. The Window Tax of
1695, which taxed any opening in a building's exterior walls, was finally repealed by the first Public
Health Act of 1848.
As the problem of overcrowding became more and more evident, several remedies were tried. There
was some individual philanthropy, model dwellings were built by "philanthropic capitalists,"
legislation was passed prohibiting overcrowding, slums were torn down(which, of course, only
worsened the problem by displacing more people), there was suburban speculative development

September 13, 1965, The Scariest And Most Haunted Building...
On Friday, October 13, 1965, horrifying things happened in an apartment building complex.
Apartment 23B is the scariest and most haunted building in New York. It was a dark and stormy
night in New York City. Little Avery, Madison, Max, and Aiden had a petrifying night. It caused a
lot of dreadful memories that will be penetrated in their minds forever. These kids just might find
themselves in a bad situation.
Day after day, we would pass the apartment building on our way to and from school. Branches of
vines and clusters of moss crawled up the sides of the building. I could see the paint tearing off the
walls. People for years have said the apartment building is haunted, but I don't believe it. They say

Aiden said with a smirk on his face. "Why? You scared?" They all laughed began to walk again.
When we reached the door, I took a deep breath and walked in. As the doors slammed shut behind
us, we looked around to find the paint chipping off the walls, a odor that smelled of rotting wood,
and a large staircase.
"C'mon guys," Madison said as she took a few steps up the staircase. She was fearless. The higher
up we got, the darker and scarier it became. The first room when we reached the top was the
infamous apartment 23B.
Aiden looked back at all of us and said, "Well, let's not just stand here. Let's go!"
He pushed the door open as it creaked until it slammed against the wall. I took one step in and felt
out of place. "Guys, please remind me why we are doing this still?"
"Because we have to show my wimpy little brother that you shouldn't believe everything you hear,"
Madison said blaming it on Max as if it were his fault we were here. We looked around. There was a
torn up bed in the middle of the room, along with the wallpaper that was ripping off the walls to
reveal the structure behind.
We set up all of our stuff. Max and Aiden took the corner by the broken window and fireplace, while
Madison and I took the side with the ancient pictures and next to the old, torn up bed. When we
finally got set we decided to explore around the building.
Madison and I went together and explored the basement and the main

Memory And Imagination
Memory and imagination are central to Brian Friels play, Dancing at Lughnasa' and Emma
Donoghues 2010 novel, Room; However, as memory provides substance to imagination and vice
versa there can often be a blurring of lines between memory and imagination, shuffling events and
shuffling reality. This overlap between memory and imagination will be the main focus of this essay.
According to Pierre Nora, memory can be multiple, yet also specific, collective, plural and
individual; it only accommodates facts that suit it and nourishes the recollections that might be
particular or symbolic (Nora 9). "Memory is life, borne by living societies founded in its name. It

from his own perspective. This story centralises John Milton's idea that the mind is its own self and

situation, we enter the world Ma has created through Jacks own eyes. As a child, Jack knows so
much less than an adult, allowing him to guess and imagine so much (The Irish Times 2010).
Knowing nothing of the outside world beyond fantasies of the television screen, with the help of
Ma's imagination, Jack presents the small space of Room as a world full of love, inanimate friends
and fun. In the first half of the novel, readers are invited into Jacks world inside Room, through his
innocent eyes, everything from "counting one hundred cereal and waterfall milk" to giving "Plant a

Analysis Of The Poem ' Battle Royal '
The primary method for judging the worth of a piece of literature is its organic unity or the complex
way all the elements of a test contribute to a story's meaning. The images, symbols, and metaphors
in Ellison's "Battle Royal" give this story a whole new meaning. In 1947, when this short story was
published, the black community was at an all–time low. The main aspects of this piece have
ambiguous meanings behind them. The grandfather's death scene, the naked dancer, the battle royal,
the narrator's speech, and the narrator's dream all have significant symbolism. The grandfather's
death had a major impact on the narrator's life. As the grandfather passed away he stated, "Son, after
I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight... Live with your head in the lion's mouth... Let'em
swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" (Ellison, 1495). These words seem to act as spiritual
guidance for the narrator. Throughout the story the readers see the narrator refer back to these
words. The grandfather dies with a legacy that haunts blacks regardless of social, political, and
economic progress. The social, political, and economic system is seen when the naked blonde's
erotic dance is described. Overall, this scene represents America's distorted value system. The
symbolism made by flag tattoo on the dancer is actually a depiction of the relentless pursuit of
money, sex, and power. The men, in the room where the dancing took place, were not considerate of
the dancer's

Dancing At Lughnasa Essay
Dancing at Lughnasa is a glimpse into the private lives of the Mundy sisters and their journey in
1930s Ireland. The sisters not only struggle with their nephew born out of wedlock (and without
father), but also keeping the appearance and values of a family with strong catholic faith. With their
own personal struggles –such as a child born out of wedlock– the relationship between the girls
becomes tense and causes a riff in the family. The trials that the Mundy sisters experience are
common everywhere – even in a modern day America. In today's day and age, unmarried woman
having children is common, but not generally approved of – especially when the mother is young. It
is assumed that the younger the mother is, the least likely she will be able to support her child –
financially and emotionally. Chris, the single mother of a seven–year–old boy (Michael) in Dancing
at Lughnasa, is twenty–four during the play; this means she had Michael at seventeen. In 1930s, the

Summary Of Dancing At Lughnasa
" Dancing at Lughnasa" is a play written by Brian Friel first published in 1990. In the play, Friel
tells the story of Ireland as a whole through the story of a family living in Ballybeg, Donegal. The
family consists of five sisters and their brother, as well as Michael. Michael is the son of one of the
sisters, Christina, but more importantly the narrator of the story. The play is set in the summer of
1936. The first change mentioned in the book is the return of Father Jack. Father Jack is the oldest
member of the Mundy family, a missionary priest, who has spent the last 25 years in Uganda.
During his time in Uganda, he has absorbed the African religion and culture. Jack's return affects

For example, Kate refuses change. As mentioned before, she cannot accept Father Jack's new
beliefs. This disapproval for change might come from the fact that Kate is afraid of losing control:"
suddenly you realize that hair cracks are appearing everywhere; that control is slipping away". That
is why she rarely joins the girls in dancing. She is worried about their futures and even though she is
described as a cold person, she truly cares about her sisters, which we can see when Agnes and Rose
decide to leave, as Kate is described to be "inconsolable".
The change in Kate's character is minimal, even when everything around her is changing. As Kate is
laid off from her job as a teacher, the authority structures in the house begin to break down. The girls
start challenging the internal hierarchy of the house. For example, Rose becomes more confident
and starts standing up for herself. She goes to meet Danny Bradley without telling anyone, leaving

The Wind explains how "air is real stuff" with weight and power. In one experiment, it suggests kids
use a coat hanger to make an impromptu scale for comparing the weight of an empty balloon versus
a blown–up one.
The wind is a tangible, real thing with weight and power to move things by the molecules that it is

One of the experiment is comparing the weight of a balloon filled with air to a deflated balloon. By
hanging both on a hanger that is balanced on a pencil, you see the balloon filled with air weights a
little bit more than the other balloon. Another experiment is filling an empty grocery bag with air
and tying it shut. This experiment allows you to feel the air and maneuver it, not see it.

Living in Tooth Ville
Tooth Ville is a very enjoyable place; I would consider living in Tooth Ville if I was you. Tooth Ville
is an island that is a shape of a tooth, hence the name "Tooth Ville". Tooth Ville has two site factors;
Tooth Ville has 3 natural harbours where food is shipped in from other countries or cities, also many

countries and cities Tooth Ville has some natural resources, also Tooth Ville is surrounded by water
we have a lot of fresh water. All we have to do is filter it and we have our fresh water. As for Tooth
Ville's situation factor, Tooth Ville has markets that are usually full since they are really close to
residential areas. And we have a lot of roads and highways that connect everything, Tooth Ville even
has 2 bridges that connect to the mini islands around Tooth Ville.
You could say that Tooth Ville is kind of like a suburban area; Tooth Ville has a lot of natural
resources so we are not like rural areas. We also don't have that much apartment building like they
do in urban areas, Tooth Ville isn't really busy that much maybe only twice in a week. Tooth Ville
has different kinds of houses; we have detached houses near the north west of Tooth Ville, there are

Self-Doubt Analysis
The Philosophy of Self–Doubt that Obscures the Beauty of Life

building. This critical shortage of information about building energy performance has prevented
property markets from valuing energy efficiency and severely undermined both public and private
efforts to increase the energy efficiency of multifamily housing. This has really affected the
development of energy efficient and green policies in multi family building. Green building is about
improving our design and construction practices so that the multifamily homes we build today will
last longer, cost less to operate, and won't harm the health of workers and residents. It is also about
protecting natural resources and improving the built environment so that ecosystems, people,
enterprises and communities can thrive and prosper. Many a times what happens is there is no

Suburbanisation in Surbiton Essay
Surbition – London
Surbiton is a small borough in the South–West of London just South of Kingston–Upon–Thames. It
has a population of nearly 170,000 people and has been at the centre of suburbanisation for many
years now. Much of the growth is form the centre of London
Timeline
1830 – Train line between London and Southampton was built which ran near Surbiton.
1837 till 1952 – The population of Surbiton grew from 200 to 2800.
1887 – At this point the population was at just above 10000.
1930 – A large amount of houses were built along in the centre of the village that were large houses
and a series of smaller houses were built going towards the River Thames increasing the population
size further.
1950s/1960s – A lot more schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes a lot of congestion at peak times and larger vehicles such as buses and lorries cannot
pass through. Surbiton is in London travel zone 6 (zone 1 is centre of London and zone 6 covers the
edge of London), which means that train fares are quite expensive. This means that many people
(40% of Surbiton) choose to drive to work and this in turn increases the amount of traffic on the
roads and increases pollution along the roads connecting to the A3 (main road into London). The
house prices are quite high in Surbiton, the average selling price in Surbiton in 2012 was £406,000
compared to the national average of £226,000. This makes in increasingly difficult for people on
lower incomes to move to the area which could lead to economic segregation (people with high
incomes living in different areas to those with a lower income). Another problem that was a
recurring theme in the 1930's was that people were becoming extremely ill as they couldn't afford
medical attention because of the prices they were paying for their houses along with their food and
other essentials.
Management of the problems
'The improvement strategy for Surbiton town centre' was launched in the autumn of 2009. The
strategy involved widening a number of roads in the town, building a new access road to the station,
having set delivery times for shops so roads didn't get congested as badly and delivery bays could

Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atbeck Summary
Sterilized Intrusion: Misinterpretation of the Human Feedback During the short story presented by
Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided
displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as an apple
tree in that his son, Douglas, demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of human
persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies"
(1977), expresses a group of individuals whom take about a magazine as a conversational
masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who take at their
own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally baseless
beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through
enjoyment of viewing individual demise and request to be raped and violence enjoyment. Therefore,
it is in these shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the
situation for abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with
removal of self–endangerment at the basis of discussion.
The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these
events whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more
formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as conversation with lead in

All Dreams Can Come True If We Have Courage
As Walt Disney once said "All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them."
Courage is something that everyone is born with, but only some are courageous enough to find it
and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as "Mental or moral strength to venture,
persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving
that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As readers we must understand that there are
going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to
find the courage within, the reader is able to learn that courage truly is self–identifiable. There may
be people along the way to help one find courage. However, it is ... Show more content on

"The next day he went on a live show on the voice of America and angrily condemned the attacks."
It is very frightening to speak up against something so powerful and evil, example: The Taliban.
However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes from the
creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to
speak up for what is right. The author is trying to show us that no matter our circumstances we can
all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of courage
because her life was put on the line. However, she walked the tightrope over the hate of the Taliban.
She reached the tallest building and was able to achieve the greatest of accomplishments. Including
being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel
Peace Prize. Malala was able to accomplish many extraordinary things thanks to her courage.
The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and
raised with her grandma. For her whole life she never knew if she had parents, so she created the
perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one
for a child who had never received anything from the so–called "parents" that brought her into this
cold, lonely world. "I wouldn't have to wonder whether I loved him or not, or have to answer "Does
Daddy's baby want to go to California with Daddy?"

William Craft House And Slave Dwelling

  • 1. William Craft House And Slave Dwelling Introduction Incorporating Mississippi Works Progress Administration Slave Narratives, the diary of Emma Finley, and excerpts of the Finley family cookbook from 1858 with artifact evidence found at the Hugh Craft House from the foundation repair in 2008 and excavation artifacts from Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, together, will give a greater insight to the foodways of the Craft family and slaves residing on the site. The purpose of this paper is to examine the artifacts collected, cataloged, and analyzed thus far from the Hugh Craft house and slave dwelling site and compare the findings to analysis of slave diets throughout the south up until 1860 to determine if the Hugh Craft family and their nine slaves shared food or food patterns. Background Hugh Craft travelled from Georgia to Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1839. In 1851, Craft rebuilt the main house, but kept the original slave dwelling structure that dates to the early 19th century The slave dwelling, still standing, was used as a detached kitchen from the early 19th century up until possibly the Great Depression or later. According to a United States census record, during the 1860s Craft owned nine slaves; two adult females, ages 28 and 25, five male slaves, ages 16, 15, 9, 3, and one age not legible, and two female children, ages 12 and 64. Hugh Craft owned higher than the average urban slave dwelling, usually having 1–3 slaves . A 1850s United States census record shows that the Craft family included Hugh Craft, ... • 5. Essay on Symbolism in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Symbolism in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman is wrought with symbolism from the opening scene. Many symbols illustrate the themes of success and failure. They include the apartment buildings, the rubber hose, Willy's brother Ben, the tape recorder, and the seeds for the garden. These symbols represent Willy's attempts to be successful and his impending failure. When Willy and Linda purchased their home in Brooklyn, it seemed far removed form the city. Willy was young and strong and he believed he had a future full of success. He and his sons cut the tree limbs that threatened his home and put up a hammock that he would enjoy with his children. The green fields ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His wife Linda, who finds the hose, knows what he was going to do with it, as does Biff. When confronted by Biff, Willy not only denies that he was going to use the hose, but also denies ever seeing it before. Instead of being remembered as a successful businessman who died, Willy is seen by his family as a failure who cannot even commit suicide or tell the truth. Willy's brother Ben seems to symbolize all of Willy's dreams that have not borne fruit. Ben provides an example of the type of success that Willy desires. Ben went into the "jungle" with nothing and became extremely wealthy. Ben achieved in a few years what Willy has dreamed about his entire life. Ben also provides additional evidence on the foolish behavior and poor decisions made by Willy. Ben offers to take Willy with him and make him rich – an offer that Willy declines. Another important symbol is Howard's tape recorder. It represents the many material objects wealthy businessmen could provide for their families and for themselves. Willy wanted this lifestyle; he wanted "something he could lay his hands on" (Miller pg. ). It would not be enough to just be successful; Willy wanted to be able to show people material representations of his success. The tape recorder shows that Howard has reached this level of success. Yet while the recorder symbolizes the wealth and power of Howard, it also represents Willy's discouragement and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Worst Death Trap, Killing Fourteen Italian Immigrants On March 13, 1900, a tenement building in New York City caught fire, killing fourteen Italian immigrants. The poorly constructed frame building housed three stories of tenement quarters, with ten apartments per floor. The rooms were five by ten feet, separated only by flimsy half–inch thick boards. With just one exit through the entrance of the building, and that only by way of a 42–inch wide stairway, their only escape was destroyed, leaving eleven families of "caged victims beyond help." People became so desperate that they jumped from upper balconies as the firemen on the scene struggled to control the flames. The top floor proved to be the deadliest, with a victim in nearly all ten rooms. After the arrest of a suspect and an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Connected to these changes were rapidly declining sanitary conditions in tenement housing and rising prices. Immigrants came to America with visions of "streets paved in gold" and a chance to rise through hard work. Americans who had lived longer in the country and who harbored rabid anti–immigrant sentiments greeted them with derision and abuse. They saw immigrants as competition in an already dwindling job market, and bearers of the dreaded Catholicism, socialism, communism, and other "foreign evils." Social Darwinism, in vogue at the time, only compounded the problems of the poor. Darwin's work in animal dominance was translated into social beliefs that benefitted successful businessmen and capitalist bullies. Social Darwinism claimed that the wealthy were dominant because they were superior, and the poor were so because they were inherently flawed. The effect of this theory was that no help was offered to the poor because they deserved none, and there was no call to level the playing field because the rich had triumphed through natural selection. With more and more people pouring into the major industrialized cities, new arrivals were forced (often tricked) into cheap and dirty tenement housing in the more dangerous areas of town, in order to afford bare subsistence in a society already glutted with humanity and twisted notions about nationality. Tenement fire stories permeated newspaper reports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Inside The Closet Skeletons in the Closet Our first experience of this old English term came about not as secrets in a person's past but in a house! Over the years, we have lived in a variety of old homes that embody the history of many families and diverse activities. Among those homes was an old three–story English–style rooming house in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that was owned by the Anglican Theological College of Emmanuel and St. Chad. Shirley and I had a "flat" on the third floor with four single girls living above us and a single eligible theological professor/Priest below us! Not only were the upper floors busy but we also had a presence living in the basement that from time to time would enter into our community life. Special care was taken by all of us to ensure we did not have a prankster amongst us so we made sure to ascertain that the occurrences were confirmed by more than one person and that they had happened more than one time to different people. Often we would hear the horn on my bicycle give a blast at different times of the day. Something or someone had to squeeze the rubber bulb to force the air through the reed on that horn! During a small dinner party hosted by the professor, the pictures on the wall shifted on their nails, and there was no vibration on the floors from music, dancing, or any kind of enthusiastic activity! More than one person experienced someone answer a phone call to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hoa If I asked you to conjure up an image of a modern American Jewish celebration, chances are you would picture the stereotypical circle dance with the catchy, repetitive song chanting "Hava Nagila". But can this dance, the hora (h) 1, truly be classified as Jewish? In this paper, I will examine the voyage the hora traveled during the 1880s from Romania to Israel, where newly settled Jewish immigrants adopted it as their own ("Israel"). Roughly forty years later, Baruch Agadati, a Jewish choreography, modified the Romania hora, allowing Eastern Europeans the opportunity to use the dance as a vehicle to create their new identity within Israel. The performance of this new dance in the first 1944 Dalia Festival was a catalyst for the Israeli folk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The festival was located in the Kibbutz Dalia in the northern region of Israel and took place over the span of two days, despite the hesitance of some (Friedhaber, 1985). With the news of the horrific Holocaust and the reality of the European Jews, many people advised for the festival to come to a standstill (Friedhaber, 1985; Ingber). Nevertheless, Kadman continued on with her plan, providing the alternative name of the Davka Festival. She decided to co–name the festival that because "davka" means "in spite of or signifying resistance and an indomitable spirit" (Friedhaber, 1985). The festival was the critical public display that further kindled the spread of the Hora Agadati that eventually revolutionized into the Israeli Horah. Alongside the Hora Agadati, Kadman recruited a mixture of a few Israeli dances that were also newly constructed, in addition to copious foreign folk dances that she saw around the country (Rosenblit; Roginsky). Approximately 3,500 visitors from all over Israel came to watch the 200 dancers, as well as participate in classes where they could learn the dances (Kaschl; Friedhaber, 1985). I declare that the production of the festival, resisting to be quieted by World War II and the destruction of European Jewry, acknowledged the Israeli nationality while still representing the European countries many of the dancers and audience ... The Dancing Plague Of 1518 Essay Emily De La Hunt Reilly 03/28/17 The Dancing Plague of 1518 The dancing plague of 1518 was an outburst of a large amount of villagers that were agressively dancing unwillingly for days on end until they died of exhaustion, dehydration, or strokes. Some theories were suggested to diagnos the reason for how the dancing plague occured. The theories proposed were mass panic and hysteria, ergot fungus injestion, the victims were in a trance, or that their religion and beliefs, in some way, generated the dancing plague. It's difficult to imagine that people were able to dance for several days with bruised and bloody feet. However, it's easier to believe if it were known that the people involved weren't completely conscious of what they were doing. The villagers were observed to be ... The young Indian man's persona is brought to life through his own recollection and spoken words. We recognize the turmoil this character faces as he is away from "his people," attending college in White man's society. He doubts his place in either world, believes he must choose between them, and realizes finally that being an Indian is only one part of who he is. Through his thoughts, actions and words we gain understanding of this character's attitudes of confusion and inferiority in his struggle to define his niche in society. A mere existence where freedom and individuality have given way to a life of dictated regulation. "Here where all the orange trees line in military rows, and endlessly bear fruit"(119). The young man does not want to be another "orange tree" whose life is decided by the conforming ways of their society, "dancing to the strings of custom and tradition"(119). What then is he striving for? He tells us of the beauty and calm of his homeland, and how much he desires to be back among his people and the simplicity and freedom of their lifestyle, but he is also angry that his people are forced to live such a menial existence. "I feel suddenly angry that my people should have to do such things for a living"(120). This is what is at the core of his struggle, the supposition that he has to choose between living as an inferior Indian with their "freedoms," or parallel the rigid, dictated life that he feels the white men live. It is the reason he feels alone among the pines. It is after talking to some hobos and bums on the train that that the young man starts to realize what his sociology professor was trying to tell ... • 29. Rape Fantasies Analysis In Margaret Atwood's Rape Fantasies, the narrator Estelle describes her "rape fantasies" in which is never assaulted. Initiated by a conversation with her coworkers about their controversial daydreams, Estelle recounts her own reoccurring visions, though hers differ from those discussed between the women. Throughout the piece, Atwood utilizes stream of conscious writing to show her narrator's jumbled thoughts as she describes her "fantasies." Atwood's short story depicts a narrator inexperienced in courtship and meeting men, as Estelle's honest and seemingly endless stream of thoughts highlight her critical view of women she knows well and explain daydreams in which she meets and (hopes to) build relationships with unfamiliar men. As a whole, Atwood's use of longer sentences and stream of consciousness emphasize the narrator's disorganized and honest opinions. Within the first few pages, the narrator voices her inner, cynical thoughts about her female colleagues. She describes Chrissy the receptionist as being "[v]arnished" and "like she's been painted over with nail polish" (Atwood 1). When Greta, a coworker, makes a comment about another's concern for being out late at night, Estelle reveals, "[Greta] worked in Detroit for three years and she never lets you forget it, it's like she thinks she's a war hero or something, we should all admire her just for the fact that she's still walking this earth" (Atwood 2). It sounds like a bad joke with an even worse punchline, but though there may be many true answers to this question, there are more similarities than one might imagine. These similarities can be observed in Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and their main characters, Esperanza and O'Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non–chronological stories, both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of returning for the people they left behind. At their most basic levels, The House on Mango Street and The Things They Carried are both broken down into stories, which, although some reference events and characters in other stories, do not follow a definite chronological order. The title story in The Things They Carried, for instance, places its characters in the Vietnam war, but in no specific year of the war, or place in Vietnam. The next story, "Love," begins with the words "Many years after the war" (O'Brien 26), placing it definitely outside of Vietnam–in O'Brien's home in Massachusetts, in fact. The next story, "Spin," however, goes back to the men of Alpha Company together in Vietnam. O'Brien even makes it easy to guess that the focus is back on Vietnam, as the first sentence of this story is "The war wasn't all terror and violence" (O'Brien 30). • 41. Critical Appreciation Of Izu No Odoriko With his publication of "Izu no Odoriko" in 1926, Yasunari Kawabata gained recognition for his work. In this story, Kawabata tells the story of a student who is traveling along the Izu peninsula. During his travels, he meets a group of traveling performers and decides to travel amongst them. During his time with the performers, he is able to experience a life different from his student life in Tokyo. An image that Kawabata repeatedly presents is a drum. The student tries to listen for the drum whenever he is alone. To the student, the sound of the beating drum signifies that his time with the traveling performers has yet come to an end. With its high popularity, "Izu no Odoriko" was translated twice by two different translators during different time periods. The first translation was done by Edward Seidensticker in 1954. The second translation was done by J. Martin Holman in 1997. Though both Seidensticker and Holman translated the same story, there is still difference in their translations. With the imagery of the drum, Holman and Seidensticker relay a difference in the intensity of emotion; furthermore, with the analyzation from Tobias, it can be seen why each translator conveys a difference in emotion. Throughout "Izu no Odoriko" Kawabata repeatedly mentions the drum that the young dancer uses in her performances. To the student, the sound of the drum reminds him of the performers. "Rape fantasies" illustrates the misconceptions pop culture taught society and women about rape through the reoccurring irony and vulnerability theme. Throughout the story, the narrator named Estelle speaks in first person with her coworkers as they share their sexual fantasies. The excerpt conversation begins with Chrissy when she asks, "What are your rape fantasies?" To put the word rape and fantasy in the same sentence is erroneous because there is nothing fantasizing about being forced against your will. The story proves that women are mentally unprepared for a life–threatening situation. Estelle has a comical tone through out the excerpt, "you know? • 57. The Cause Of The Dancing Plague Of 1518 The Dancing Plague of 1518 was an occurrence of unknown origin. Although still unsolved, there have been theories published on the subject. The theories that have been brought to light are mass hysteria caused by St. Vitus, Ergotism, Tarantism, and an unknown type of heretical cult. None of these ideas are able to truly explain the abrupt Dancing Plague that occurred in Strasbourg. This is not the first time this type of event has occurred. Dancing epidemics have also occurred in other areas of Europe in earlier centuries, but without the same deadly outcome as the 1518 plague. The most popular theory on the cause of 1518's Dancing Plague is the mass hysteria theory. John Waller, a firm supporter of this theory, was able to give very convincing evidence. Although the mass hysteria has more creditable evidence, it is still not capable of being the exact cause for the Dancing Plague. The Dancing Plague may be thought of as a faux tale, but there are multiple records to prove that this occurrence is nowhere near a tale passed on through centuries. The Dancing Plague was and still is one of the most mysterious events in the 16th century. The Dancing Plague occurred in Strasbourg in July, 1518. It all began with a woman named Frau Troffea, who began dancing uncontrollably in the middle of the streets. She did this night and day on her own without stopping for nearly a week. This connection is portrayed by the Irish dramatist Brian Friel in Dancing at Lughnasa, where it has a crucial role. The play depicts the daily lives of five sisters from the point of view of Michael, the son of one of them. In his dramatic narrative, he describes a number of events in which dancing is present in some form. At first glance, the function of dance in the story appears uncomplicated – it serves as a form of entertainment for the sisters – yet on close analysis, it is noticeable that is only one of many. In the Bellybag, the place of broken dreams, where people struggle to make a living, dancing takes away the pain of having no career prospects, being alone and not satisfied with life. This is especially true for the sisters, as not even one of them has a successful life or even a husband. For instance, Maggie – the most cheerful character in the play, who often makes jokes – while she is not giving away her sadness directly, the reader can feel a certain sense of longing for youth. Dance reminds her of the competitions she used to take part in when she was young. She misses being admired and also, she is tired of living mundane life, without any joy or reward for the hard work. Obviously, she sees dance as the means to escape her duties and woes and she is the one who initiated dance in few scenes, for example at the beginning, when she managed to make all sisters dance, even Kate, who was the most reluctant. She is not waiting to be asked for a dance and takes the opportunity to asks Gerry to dance, too. Rose, the most naïve of the Mundy, thinks that the invitation for the Lughnasa dance is a proof for being loved by Danny, one of the local men, who is already married. She misinterprets her sisters' concern as jealously. Agnes, who has the closest emotional connection with Rose, and is the one who worries about her the most, is downcast for the most part, yet in dance she shows true happiness. As for Kate, who keeps all her feelings hidden under her cold demeanour and who protests against dancing, it is the source of a conflict. Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atwood Analysis Utilizing Involvements: Manipulation of Human Deterioration During the short story presented by Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as the bud to which spawned his son, Douglas, as Douglas demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of human persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies" (1977), expresses a group of individuals whom talk about a magazine and turns it into a conversational masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who take at their own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally baseless beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through enjoyment of viewing individual demise and through request to be deprived. Therefore, it is in these shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the situation for abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with removal of self–endangerment at the basis of discussion. The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these events, whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as a conversation with lead in typical avenues of expression provides stagnation of potential solutions to a reoccurring or present problem. Through the usage of intellectual discussion among other counterparts, there can be an elimination of the habitual inactivity of assorted thinking. Moreover, ignorance in the debate of reason primes individuals to go on their own volition to seek out these events such as the perfect rape as impulse obscures the repercussions and allows for completion of such task in mind. There are three phases of disengagement theory. These are shrinkage of life space is when you are not working or have no contact with friends and family. You don't get to meet new people. You decide not to take up any hobbies or activities. The second phase is increased individuality. This is when you become independent and what others do does not matter to you. This is to stay physically and mentally active. You may start to disengage with some things such as leaving job or leaving family however you will start new activities that you may have an interest in. A theory is an explanation or reason for that fact. In 1966 Bromley argued that people do engagement but need to remain active in order to prevent disengagement to cause major problems. He said that it is important to have an interest in some activities because being disengaged can have an effect on an individual and lead them to isolation and depression. A theory of ageing is a explanation or reason for the natural cause of ageing. It explains the changes a person goes through when they age. Theories can be proved or sided by laws and facts and tested hypotheses. Disengagement theory An example of disengagement theory is when a pensioner quits his job or does not take up any hobbies. They may just stay at home and not even socialise with friends and family. Advantages of the disengagement theory are people can start to rest and not worry about anything. They become independent and take their mind off things. This may be because they are understandable that it is the final stages of life so they may want to be independent and not do anything. However there are many disadvantages of the disengagement theory. When a person disengages, they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 89. Dancing At Lughnasa Analysis Brian Friel's play Dancing at Lughnasa uses the effect of absence and presence to create a heartfelt and tense 'memory play' set in Ireland in the summer of 1936. Michael lives with his mother and four aunts, along with his Uncle recently returned from Africa. Friel's choice to have an absence of a strong family unit is important and it will be considered how this sets the tone for the play. Next, this essay will go on to examine the way the characters unfulfilled desires add to the overall effect of the play. Poverty is apparent in the Mundy household and through the presence of hardship Friel represents the socioeconomic environment in Ireland. Continuing to consider the Ireland represented in the play this essay will look at the way the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The emotions of love and loss are not openly portrayed yet are present all the same. Each sister has a romantic unfulfilled fantasy, yet is constrained by her position in society and the financial situation of the Mundy household. The conflicts of society are also expressed by Friel in the way paganism and Catholicism are both present yet neither holds force in the household. In terms of society Friel also makes subtle nods to mass Irish emigration. The absence of many things in the play offers a bleak output yet underneath there is an optimistic tone, that dancing remains and "all its hopes might be found in those assuaging notes and those hushed rhythms" ... They most likely had some people dancing at certain times to keep up the act. Everyone in the town either believed it or was in on the lie. Some people may believe that the dancers were part of some kind of cult, however if that was the case some people would have stopped dancing. A few people assume that they must have been threatened to kill the dancers if they were to stop dancing; but with so many people dancing there must have been at least one that would have escaped and maybe have spilled the beans. Some are convinced that the spasms are the cause of the so called "dancing." Although if you were to see so many people having spasms would they all be in the same place, and even more reason to not include yourself in the idiotic theory is spasms don't appear to look like dancing and may cause some of the victims to collapse. Therefore our theory is most likely. Anyone who entered the town and showed signs of telling an authority may have been held captive and or executed. The reason they would lie is unknown yet the most plausible cause for the mistruth is simply to toy with citizens, confuse them, possibly distract them from the horrible events or perhaps even to draw attention from a crime that was taking place. • 97. Home Analysis : Home Sweet Home Fanhor Sanchez Patino Ryan Cerone Survey 4 Home Sweet Home For many home could be defined as the physical spaces we inhabit. However, for others home is defined in a deeper level that relates to the relationships we have or want to have with people. Home could be categorized in micro and macro levels. The micro level could reflect on the immediate situation in where we find ourselves such as the terrestrial space where we dwell in, the people we live with, etc. On the other hand, in the macro level home may perhaps refer to a broader idea of self that characterize us, such as the country we come from, the culture we were brought up in, etc. While the meaning of the word home is relative and based on personal opinions, architecture is a tool that could help us create an identity of what we consider home to be since it reflects physical, historical, and social conditions of the physical reality we live in. I live in the 7th floor of an apartment building with my family. Although this type of housing is quite common in this area, our home has some peculiar features that I have discovered recently. Because of its placement and small architectural cues this residence acts like a physical bookmark of a period in New York's history that I have only recently been able to register and appreciate thanks to my newfound architectural knowledge. • 101. Jewish Folk Dance As A Means Of Creating A New Israeli... Jewish national identity was colonized when Jewish people were forced out of ancient Israel and dispersed to various different nations. Anti–Semitism was one of the principle means for this colonization because it made it dangerous for Jewish people to express their own national identity in the European nations they dispersed to. As a result, certain traditions, like Jewish folk dance, which were not codified, were lost. Jewish folk dance also disappeared because folk traditions are strongly connected to the land in which they originated and the majority of Jews left Israel. Furthermore, because of the third commandant of the Torah, Jews were not allowed to depict images of their dance. Consequently, their traditional dance was lost forever. However, when the Jews returned to Israel in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they found it important to recreate traditions like folk dance to reassert their fractured nationhood after so many years of diaspora. Thus, Israeli folk dance was a means of creating a new Israeli culture. Israeli folk dance was created by using elements from other dance cultures with themes and music of modern Israel. In this paper, I will argue that while anti–Semitism resulted in the colonization of Jewish national identity, women re–created Israeli folk dance as a means to establish a new Jewish identity, as well as an identity for themselves. By focusing on Romania and Yemen, we will identify the vestiges of colonialism in Israeli folk dance, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Overcrowding and Housing in Nineteenth–Century London From 1801 to 1851, the population of London grew from under 1 million inhabitants to 2.25 million. This was due in large part to immigration, both from other countries and from the countryside of England. Hundreds of thousands of people were moving to the newly industrialized cities and towns to find work, having been squeezed off the land because of the enclosure of farms. There was also displacement of the working–class within the city of London because of a number of construction projects. There were street improvement schemes in which tenements were razed in order to widen the passages. The transformation of part of the city into a non–residential district devoted to finance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of every three inhabitants of flats of 4 or less rooms, irrespective of class, were overcrowded. In 1866, the Sanitary Act defined overcrowding as less than 400 cubic feet for each adult living in a room day and night, or 300 cubic feet for a sleeping room. For children, these dimensions were halved. This means that a man, woman, and one child living in a room 8'x10'x10' would be considered overcrowded. For statistical and census purposes, the London City Council ignored cubic capacity, and counted anything beyond two people per room as overcrowded. Hector Gavin, a lecturer in forensic medicine at Charing Cross Hospital estimated that if all the windows and doors of a typical laborers tenement were shut(against the cold, for example), the maximum length a man could survive before all available oxygen was consumed was seven hours. The Window Tax of 1695, which taxed any opening in a building's exterior walls, was finally repealed by the first Public Health Act of 1848. As the problem of overcrowding became more and more evident, several remedies were tried. There was some individual philanthropy, model dwellings were built by "philanthropic capitalists," legislation was passed prohibiting overcrowding, slums were torn down(which, of course, only worsened the problem by displacing more people), there was suburban speculative development closely following the development of the railroad which provided cheap, rapid transit to the newly– forming ... Apartment 23B is the scariest and most haunted building in New York. It was a dark and stormy night in New York City. Little Avery, Madison, Max, and Aiden had a petrifying night. It caused a lot of dreadful memories that will be penetrated in their minds forever. These kids just might find themselves in a bad situation. Day after day, we would pass the apartment building on our way to and from school. Branches of vines and clusters of moss crawled up the sides of the building. "C'mon guys," Madison said as she took a few steps up the staircase. She was fearless. The higher up we got, the darker and scarier it became. The first room when we reached the top was the infamous apartment 23B. Aiden looked back at all of us and said, "Well, let's not just stand here. Let's go!" He pushed the door open as it creaked until it slammed against the wall. I took one step in and felt out of place. "Guys, please remind me why we are doing this still?" "Because we have to show my wimpy little brother that you shouldn't believe everything you hear," Madison said blaming it on Max as if it were his fault we were here. We looked around. There was a torn up bed in the middle of the room, along with the wallpaper that was ripping off the walls to reveal the structure behind. We set up all of our stuff. Max and Aiden took the corner by the broken window and fireplace, while Madison and I took the side with the ancient pictures and next to the old, torn up bed. Memory And Imagination Memory and imagination are central to Brian Friels play, Dancing at Lughnasa' and Emma Donoghues 2010 novel, Room; However, as memory provides substance to imagination and vice versa there can often be a blurring of lines between memory and imagination, shuffling events and shuffling reality. This overlap between memory and imagination will be the main focus of this essay. According to Pierre Nora, memory can be multiple, yet also specific, collective, plural and individual; it only accommodates facts that suit it and nourishes the recollections that might be particular or symbolic (Nora 9). In a truly grim situation, we enter the world Ma has created through Jacks own eyes. As a child, Jack knows so much less than an adult, allowing him to guess and imagine so much (The Irish Times 2010). Knowing nothing of the outside world beyond fantasies of the television screen, with the help of Ma's imagination, Jack presents the small space of Room as a world full of love, inanimate friends and fun. In the first half of the novel, readers are invited into Jacks world inside Room, through his innocent eyes, everything from "counting one hundred cereal and waterfall milk" to giving "Plant a cup of water" and eating with "Meltedy Spoon" creates a world full of imagination, love and excitement (Donoghue 6–8).; ... • 118. Analysis Of The Poem ' Battle Royal ' The primary method for judging the worth of a piece of literature is its organic unity or the complex way all the elements of a test contribute to a story's meaning. The images, symbols, and metaphors in Ellison's "Battle Royal" give this story a whole new meaning. In 1947, when this short story was published, the black community was at an all–time low. The main aspects of this piece have ambiguous meanings behind them. The grandfather's death scene, the naked dancer, the battle royal, the narrator's speech, and the narrator's dream all have significant symbolism. The grandfather's death had a major impact on the narrator's life. As the grandfather passed away he stated, "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight... Live with your head in the lion's mouth... Let'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" (Ellison, 1495). These words seem to act as spiritual guidance for the narrator. Throughout the story the readers see the narrator refer back to these words. The grandfather dies with a legacy that haunts blacks regardless of social, political, and economic progress. The social, political, and economic system is seen when the naked blonde's erotic dance is described. Overall, this scene represents America's distorted value system. The symbolism made by flag tattoo on the dancer is actually a depiction of the relentless pursuit of money, sex, and power. The sisters not only struggle with their nephew born out of wedlock (and without father), but also keeping the appearance and values of a family with strong catholic faith. With their own personal struggles –such as a child born out of wedlock– the relationship between the girls becomes tense and causes a riff in the family. The trials that the Mundy sisters experience are common everywhere – even in a modern day America. In today's day and age, unmarried woman having children is common, but not generally approved of – especially when the mother is young. It is assumed that the younger the mother is, the least likely she will be able to support her child – financially and emotionally. In the play, Friel tells the story of Ireland as a whole through the story of a family living in Ballybeg, Donegal. The family consists of five sisters and their brother, as well as Michael. Michael is the son of one of the sisters, Christina, but more importantly the narrator of the story. The play is set in the summer of 1936. The first change mentioned in the book is the return of Father Jack. Father Jack is the oldest member of the Mundy family, a missionary priest, who has spent the last 25 years in Uganda. I woke up early to see the gloomy morning on the day of my robotics competition. The bland morning, grey and pessimistic, seemed like a sky of splattered gold paint over a large canvas to me. Multifamily housing has high potential for energy savings through retrofits, but the lack of data on best practices and historical cost savings has weakened investment. Data related to energy efficiency, utilities and construction is really difficult to obtain for a building, as many multifamily owners and operators never benchmark the energy performance of their building. This critical shortage of information about building energy performance has prevented property markets from valuing energy efficiency and severely undermined both public and private efforts to increase the energy efficiency of multifamily housing. This has really affected the development of energy efficient and green policies in multi family building. Surbiton is in London travel zone 6 (zone 1 is centre of London and zone 6 covers the edge of London), which means that train fares are quite expensive. This means that many people (40% of Surbiton) choose to drive to work and this in turn increases the amount of traffic on the roads and increases pollution along the roads connecting to the A3 (main road into London). The house prices are quite high in Surbiton, the average selling price in Surbiton in 2012 was £406,000 compared to the national average of £226,000. This makes in increasingly difficult for people on lower incomes to move to the area which could lead to economic segregation (people with high incomes living in different areas to those with a lower income).
