White, a friend of Raleigh who had accompanied the previous expeditions to Roanoke, led them.
White was later elected Governor and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in Roanoke 's settlement.
They were ordered to travel to Roanoke first to gather Grenville 's men, but when they arrived in
July 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the

women who had made the Atlantic crossing plus White 's newly born granddaughter Virginia Dare,

reminds me of our English class, and we have done several activities that had to do with finding the
true meaning of the text in which we were reading. Finding a deeper meaning of a text or finding the

started screaming, and the little girl fell to the ground. Everything caught flame and the mother
huddled her babies on the ground in the corner of the town square. Buildings crumbled, and the
ground shook. There was a blinding light, and then a beautiful forest faded into view on Roanoke
island. A small and slightly confused dog stood in the middle of a daisy patch. It watched a hand
sink into the earth, burning, and right where it disappeared, a daisy sprouted. The dog looked

possibly happened. The most popular and widely accepted theory suggests that a hostile Native
American tribe abducted the colonists and either killed them or made them slaves. An alternative

landed in England, he found that his country was getting ready for war with Spain. For the next two
years, no ships or sailors were available for a return trip to Roanoke. It wasn't until August 1590,

England. It was very small, accommodating only around a hundred colonists total. However, this

A climatologist had researched bald cypress trees in swamps near Blackway and Notoway River to

There were harsh conditions that caused supplies to run low faster than anticipated and "White
agreed to sail back to Britain to shore up the settlement's supplies – [it was] a trip that should have
