Comparison Of O. Henry
William Sydney Porter, more commonly known by his pen name O. Henry, was a short story author;
he is well known throughout the world for his clever wordplay and unexpected endings. O. Henry´s
technique to gain inspiration for his writing was by observing and talking to the people he met while
moving around the U.S. His constant travelling occurred due to the loss of his job because he was
accused of embezzlement. O. Henry´s bountiful writing period began in 1902 in New York City,
where he wrote 381 short stories. His trademark is his plot twist endings and his characterization of
the creative ways used to solve difficult situations. ¨Ransom of Red Chief¨, ¨The Purple Dress¨, ¨The

few minutes he would remember that he was a pesky redskin, and pick up his stick rifle and tiptoe to

Memories : One Of The Greatest Gift Of Life
Memories are one of the greatest gifts in life; bad memories are there for you to look back on and
grow stronger, whereas the good memories wrap around you, and bring a smile to your face.
Essentially our essence is built upon a collection of memories, from your first word to when you say
"I do" to the person of your dreams. So if the life you built is held together by memories, what
happens when the foundation starts to crumble, do you become an empty shell? It all started
suddenly, without any indication of what was to come. At first it was little things, like forgetting
where I left my cotton slippers at and where I left the car keys. Gradually things escalated. I started
getting paranoid, suspecting that someone was messing with my things. I started to suspect that my
husband of 12 years, James was playing tricks on me, by hiding my phone. I ended up confronting
James, accusing him of being jealous of me talking to my friends. He strongly denied having
anything to do with the missing phone, saying that "I lost my marbles". A week later, Sarah my
nine–year old daughter found the stupid phone that had evaporated my trust of my loving husband.
Turns out the phone was in between the loaves of sourdough and whole wheat. From that moment
on things only got harder. I felt as if I was stuck in a dream. All of my memories were shrinking and
I didn't understand why. Afterall, I was in pretty good shape since I went to the gym often and I just
turned 40 not to long ago. Right now, I should be enjoying my life, I am happily married, I have a
beautiful daughter and handsome little boy, I just got promoted, and we are comfortable financially.
James, kept assuring me that everything was fine he would say, "You just need to relax. You've been
working so hard lately at work and you're probably stressed with Derek starting kindergarten". It

The long–awaited moment of truth has recently been discovered and it proves that Santa, the red–
suited guy who hopped through our chimneys, is real. Many adults, nowadays, once used to
believe– when they were kids that Santa is Real and he comes with his reindeers to give them gifts,
unfortunately, it was not really the Santa who came and gifted them, but it was their parents.
The myths of the existence of Santa was still like a mystery to a lot.

The Gift Of The Magi Short Story Analysis
Throughout our lives there are things and people that each of us hold dear to our hearts. Things and
people we love and treasure above all, but sometimes we let the pressures from society dictate to us
what the standards of a happy life is, and we forget what is really important. In the story "The Gift
of the Magi," O. Henry reminds us the nature of true wealth, true generosity , and true love. In "The
Gift of the Magi" we meet Della and Jim Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to buy
each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York City
apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of over 600
short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime, and was first published in a New York newspaper in 1905.
Henry started writing short stories while in prison for embezzlement as a way to support his
daughter. Ironically, the story does not seem to reflect Henry's luck with love and relationships.
After years of fighting alcoholism, mental illness, and financial problems, Henry died in of cirrhosis
of the liver in 1910 (imdb.com). One of the points made is that Jim and Della have the gift of true
love. We see Della's love for Jim by what motives her to want to buy a nice gift. She did not want it
to empress the neighbors, or to out give Jim. She simply wanted "Something fine and rare and

to find a publisher, he sent it out in his Christmas cards. Many of the people who received the story

South. Although they spoke English, words and gestures held a different meaning to them than what

Some include cliches such as, "be careful what you wish for,", "you don't realize what you have
until it's gone," and, "don't take things for granted." These can be considered implied themes
because George thought he had the worst life in the world, but after seeing what everyone else's life
would be affected negatively, including his own, he decided that he really did have a great life and

Life is giving to one to one to live freely. Parents are the greatest gift to life. Nevertheless, society
questions, do adopted children feel the same? Being adopted is not easy or fun it's full of chances to
take saying because one never knows what's to come. Adoption helps mothers who cannot have
children, for mothers who cannot take care of their child, and for the child to be in a better

type of communication. A child growing up with adoptive parents gives the adoptive parents the
same right as the birth parents. The child becomes a member of the family that provides the
emotional, social, and physical needs the child requires to row up with to turn into a functioning

Music affects people in various ways. Ones reaction to music differs from person to person. It can
evoke emotions of both joy and happiness. Music can stir up old memories of different times,
places, and people. In the U.S. a major part of life is music, as stated by Natalie Guice Adams and
Pamela J. Bettis, " American institution that can tell us something about ourselves, like jazz,
baseball, and cheerleading, are also not static but being created anew with each generation." (Remix

Free concerts available in just about every town for everyone to enjoy. This would give people a
chance to go hear their favorite music artists. This opens up the idea of travel on Music Day. People

Theme In O. Henry's The Gift Of The Magi
Theme in "The Gift of the Magi" "Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest."
(Henry 108). This is one of the quotes from O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi." "The
Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is short about two adults making a sacrifice for one another. "The
Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is about sacrificing something for someone else which is revealed
by the author's irony, descriptive language, and dialogue. In this story, "The Gift of the Magi," the
author uses different situations throughout the story to show irony. "For there lay the combs– the set
of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped for long in a Broadway window."(108). In these
words, the author is describing what Della had wanted for a very long time, but no longer has her
long hair. This represents irony because Della sold her hair to buy the watch chain for Jim and now
he no longer has the watch and Della is left with eighty–one cents. The story also states," I sold the
watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."(108). Briefly,
the author shows that Jim has given up his most valuable possession for someone he loved. This
shows irony because now Della has no hair for the combs and Jim has no watch for his new watch
chain. They are both left with two useless items. According to the author, the text also says,"And
here i have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most
unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house."(108). In this quote, the
author is directly stating how irony is used in the story. This is showing how the two people
sacrificed something for each other but ended up both items being useless because they gave up the
things the items were useful to. Given these points, the author uses irony to demonstrate problems
throughout the story in different situations.
During the story the author also uses descriptive language to show some of the events and main
issues throughout the story. According to the text,"'Will you buy my hair?' asked Della.'I buy hair,'
said Madame.'Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it.' Down rippled the brown

Last Day Of High School
The last day of my Early College High School (ECHS) 2017 year, was a day I will never forget. On
the last day of school, I got to drive my dad's truck; I remember telling myself I can't wait until I get
my own car, which is something I asked for on my Christmas list to Santa. I went to classes ready to
get my last final over with. The day went by pretty fast after the test, then we went to lunch and then
we had clubs. Since my club was not allowed to go to the gym, I stayed inside with the Medical
club. In the medical club, Cody gave a long presentation on the different Affordable Care Acts
(ACA) proposal, and we got into a debate which got me ready for the break even more.
At the beginning of the break, I was excited to be out of school, I had made so many plans. I made
plans to go to Austin and go to the spray paint park, and travel to Louisiana to celebrate my niece's
first birthday, but all of my plans were ruined.
For the first week of my break, I was sick. I winded up catching both the flu and strep throat, I
thought my Christmas break would be ruined, but it wasn't. During the time that I was sick, I got to

Everybody loves Christmas. The suspense of not knowing what is under the wrapping paper drives
us absolutely wild. The joy of spending time with family, friends, and your significant other is the
best! But why do loved ones give each other gifts? In O' Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi,
two young lovers sacrifice their own most prized possessions to get the other a Christmas gift.
Ironically, each one gets the other a gift to be used for their prized possession; however, the gifts
cannot be used because they no longer have any use. Author O' Henry uses irony to enhance, or
magnify, the true meaning of Christmas: to selflessly give to someone you love to show your love
for them.

Even though Della and Jim made unwise choices in how to finance their gifts for one another, they
were the wisest in the sense that they sacrificed their own most prized possessions to give to the

Service Day Reflection
I was a participant in the Labor of Love event on Saturday, September 9 from 8:00am–12:00pm. At
8:00am on Saturday, we all gathered on the McKenna Lawn for a brief meeting and continental
breakfast. During that time, together as Setonians, one of the Sisters of Charity spoke to us about the
importance of performing charitable works, and how these works will impact many people who are
in need of our gift of service. After those impactful words, we were dismissed off to our service
sights. I signed up for the Greater Parkview Church. I really did not know what to expect when I
signed up for the service day, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet fellow students
and serve at the same time. The church is located on the corner of Westminster Avenue. It is a large
building that houses service every Sunday morning and a bible study every Wednesday night. When
my friends and I walked into the doors, the pastor was sitting in his office. He immediately put us to
work. We cleaned the inside and outside of the windows. Inside of the sanctuary space, we
vacuumed, Lysol wiped the wooden pews and microphone stands. Also, we dusted the wooden
fixtures on the altar and the surrounding area. Being a part of the Seton Hill Labor of Love was truly
a wonderful experience. Seeing all of the students that are willing to serve others is amazing. The
service that I performed can be viewed as "just cleaning", but it is so much more than that. It is

Henry, was a short story author; he is well known throughout the world for his clever wordplay and unexpected endings. O. Henry´s technique to gain inspiration for his writing was by observing and talking to the people he met while moving around the U.S. His constant travelling occurred due to the loss of his job because he was accused of embezzlement. O. Henry´s bountiful writing period began in 1902 in New York City, where he wrote 381 short stories. Essentially our essence is built upon a collection of memories, from your first word to when you say "I do" to the person of your dreams. So if the life you built is held together by memories, what happens when the foundation starts to crumble, do you become an empty shell? Things and people we love and treasure above all, but sometimes we let the pressures from society dictate to us what the standards of a happy life is, and we forget what is really important. In "The Gift of the Magi" we meet Della and Jim Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to buy each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York City apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of over 600 short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime, and was first published in a New York newspaper in 1905. During that time, together as Setonians, one of the Sisters of Charity spoke to us about the importance of performing charitable works, and how these works will impact many people who are in need of our gift of service. After those impactful words, we were dismissed off to our service sights. I signed up for the Greater Parkview Church. I really did not know what to expect when I signed up for the service day, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet fellow students and serve at the same time. The church is located on the corner of Westminster Avenue. It is a large building that houses service every Sunday morning and a bible study every Wednesday night. When my friends and I walked into the doors, the pastor was sitting in his office. He immediately put us to work. We cleaned the inside and outside of the windows. Inside of the sanctuary space, we vacuumed, Lysol wiped the wooden pews and microphone stands. Also, we dusted the wooden fixtures on the altar and the surrounding area. Being a part of the Seton Hill Labor of Love was truly a wonderful experience. Seeing all of the students that are willing to serve others is amazing.
