Auto Wreck
Auto Wreck by Karl Shapiro is an impressionistic poem that delves into the understanding of
technology and the horrific contentment that society has with automobile wrecks. Written during the
1940's Shapiro has been known for writing about simplistic things yet with grave detail. In Auto
Wreck Shapiro uses similes and metaphors to describe a surreal feeling of an automobile wreck. He
has determined that everyday citizens have become too detached from the everyday violence caused
by automobiles. Shapiro aims to prove that the mechanical monsters that threaten everyday life have
become too mundane in today's society. During the poem, Karl Shapiro uses an abundance of
similes and metaphors to describe the fantasy–like setting of an automobile ... Show more content

He states that every auto wreck can cause a massive amount of danger while being ignored by the
common people around the wreckage. He goes on to describe the wreckage as "Empty husks of
locusts" (Line 20) how they are locust–like in the destruction that they cause. An auto wreck is an
extravagant and almost unreal in the destruction that it causes to the people involved. He describes
the people by saying "We are deranged, walking among the cops." (Line 15) He is showing how the
people are mentally disturbed by the extreme amount of damage that has happened. Shapiro then
goes into detail describing the way the police cover up the horrific violence that has happened. "One
with a bucket douches ponds of blood" (Line 18) this line referees to the police washing away the
heavy ponds of blood in the streets. This seems to be common for the police as they already have an
understanding of how to deal with this extravagant violence. He details the world around him and
how some officers have different jobs when cleaning the car crash up. The officers almost seemed
detached from this violence as they have become used to this violence. It's a horrific thought that
these officers could be so accepting of this dark

Latin School Concert Report
It was January 7th, 2017, the weather alert had been right, there was a pretty darn big snowstorm
outside, but inside, of the Boston Latin School auditorium, the 10th Annual MMEA Eastern Senior
District Festival were filled with excited spirits that were much bigger. There was a smattering of
students from each school in the Eastern District, and many BLS students were part of them. A
feeling of awe and admiration floated through me as I saw them enter the stage. In 4 years, I would
be just like them, I hoped.
There were 4 fantastic music ensembles that would perform: Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band,
and Chorus. Each group had a particular conductor, but all performed with much skill, gusto, and
professionalism.
The first to perform was the Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Emily Threinen (Director of Bands at
the Univeristy of Minnesota School of Music), with pieces such "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli and
"Sheltering Sky" by John Mackey. The ensemble's prominent performance, however, was in its last
piece, "Scenes from the Louvre" by Norman dello Joio. From the opening movement to the last
note, the entire auditorium was filled with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The following show was the Senior Jazz Band, with only 20 students, conducted by Dr. Andrew
Goodrich (Director of various Jazz Bands, writer of reviews and articles realted to Jazz education,
etc). The ensemble played many jazz classics, such as "Nolstalgia in Times Square" by the bassist
Charles Mingus, and"Body and Soul" by George Stone. They also incorporated some other songs,
such as "Tuning Up" by Toshiki Akiyoshi, and "Count Bubba" by George Goodwin. Throughout the
entire performance, many soloists popped up and played with such tone and mood and dedication,
with riffs and dazzling techniques. The group also had wonderful cooperation and harmony with
each other. Right after a song ended, the crowd would erupt into cheering

Personal Narrative
The most powerful moment that has happened to me involving music happened in the middle of my
seventh grade year. Prior to seventh grade, I played the violin but desired to learn the Double Bass. I
asked a few times if I could switch instruments so that I could fulfil that desire, but my teacher
always turned me down telling me that I should just stick with the violin, this of course made me
devasted. Then the following school year, the teacher asked if anybody could play Bass because
Alex (the bassist) had moved to a different school and we had only one bassist left in the orchestra
and at that moment I got my chance to learn an instrument that I not only loved to hear, but also
loved to look at, listen to and play. My teacher was skeptical ... Show more content on

I started to practice every day, doing music activities outside of school, offering to do extra
performances during concerts and if I wasn't in orchestra at school, I was doing something over the
summer that would help me be the best musician I could possibly be. This whole series of change
was set off from the moment I put my bow on that Bass and it has changed my life for the better
such as, my future aspirations, I want to pursue a career in music now because not only do I love
doing things with music, but being paid for doing something that I enjoy would be a blessing! Also,
the way that I see the world, music and myself, has changed drastically, for once in my life I actually
see myself as an empowering individual that is capable of doing anything I set myself to do, for
once I Actually can say to myself that I am proud of what I have accomplished, for once I can also
say that I am happy with my life and that I finally found something worth living for. Today, in my
eyes, I see the world and music as a partnership, without music the world would be boring, music
has so much meaning to us that we fail to realize, people show emotion through music and speak to
those who need

High School Band Research Paper
Auditioning for the Missouri State Band was a high school dream come true for me. The countless
hours of practice and dedication that I put into my audition material made me one of the potential
candidates to have a seat in the ensemble. To have gotten this far meant that I had been selected to
perform in my district band. However, the audition that I had passed for admittance into my district
band did not prepare me for the challenged that I had before me. Behind the door leading into the
audition room would be four adjudicators. Those four adjudicators would decide my fate; would I be
accepted or turned away? I had prepared for this moment for six consecutive months, hours upon
hours of practice. Every day I practiced the same musical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I got up from my seat on the floor against the lockers and walked into the room. Sitting at a table
facing the wall was a line of adjudicators who would judge my playing ability and determine
whether or not I pass. I placed my music on the lone stand in the middle of the room. My mouth
became dry and my hands started to shake more vigorously. I started to play. My first task was my
chromatic scale, every note that my instrument, clarinet, is capable of playing. Something that
outside the audition room that would otherwise seem elementary for me, however, I was incapable
of completing the whole exercise. My heart starting beating faster and faster, my mouth still dry, my
lungs feel as though they are failing. I continued through my audition, each etude progressively
getting worse than the previous. Finally, one judicator thanks me and I am shown out through the
door by the room monitor. Standing outside the door I felt a sense of relief, but I also felt like a
failure. I had spent hours preparing for this audition only to fail in a matter of seconds. When the
final callbacks were posted and my name was not listed I was reminded yet again of my failure.
However, I knew that this was not a true indication of my musical talent. I was accepted in my
district band and that is what I am still proud of

music has harmonic flamboyance, amazing dissonance and crushing harmonic relationships and this
is why many people that sing in choir loves his music (Larson). His first choral composition "Go
Lovely Rose" incorporates many musical elements. When I first listened to this song, I was shocked
by how amazing it sounded, this is a very beautiful choral piece. The song is an acapella piece and
he uses very rich harmonies that switch from being consonant and dissonant. There are also parts of
the song when they sing in unison. One big element that he uses in this song is imitative polyphony.
At the part of the song when the choir sings "Then died that she ",the soprano comes in then the alto
then the tenor then the bass and there are also other parts of this song where that occurs. He also
used a lot of dynamic contrast in this song. There were parts of the song where they would

Essay on Contemporary Choral Music
Contemporary Choral Compositions
Most people that live in the modern generation view choral music as old, boring harmonies whose
composers died with kings. However, choral music is not just for the elderly singing hymns
apathetically in the church pews on Sunday morning. Though the perception of it remains
unenthusiastic among common listeners, the life of choral music is not as dead or boring as most
would assume. Choral music is made modern, enjoyable, and vibrant through the works of
contemporary composers. Although it is not as recognized in modern generations, brilliant vocal
compositions and composers still exist today.
Two of the most recognized composers of contemporary choral music today are Morten Lauridsen
and Eric Whitacre. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While reading love poems, Lauridsen became increasingly intrigued by the symbolic image of
flames that recurred within the context. "I decided to compose an intensely dramatic cycle based on
Renaissance love poems employing this fire motive while blending stylistic musical features of the
period with contemporary compositional idiom," says Lauridsen.
The musical textures of this composition are replete with Renaissance techniques, including word
painting, modality, intricate counterpoint, and bold harmonies unified by what Lauridsen terms the
"fire chord," a minor triad with an added major seventh. The six movements of Madrigali, in order,
include Ov'è, Lass', Il Bel Viso?, Quando Son Più Lontan, Amor, Io Sento L'Alma, Io Piango, Luci
Serene e Chiare, and Se per Havervi, Oimè. In the final movement, Se per Havervi, Oimè, the text
translates to:
"If, alas, when I gave you my heart,
There was born in me that passion,
Cruel Lady, which burns me everywhere
So that I am all aflame,
And if, loving you, bitter torment
Makes me die of sorrow,
Wretched me! What shall I do
Without you who are my every joy?"
[Play Madrigali] Lauridsen explains, "I wanted this music to emanate (like ripples from a pebble
thrown into a pond) from a single, primal sonority; one dramatic chord that would encapsulate the
intensity of the entire cycle and which would provide a musical motivic unity to

Designing An Ensemble Curriculum
Instrumental ensembles are vital to the liberal arts core in college programs. Both aspects should
function collaboratively, teaching students to reach their full potential, think critically, and develop
patterns of rich, diverse thought. While producing a high level musical experience, instrumental
music programs must train complete musicians, performers, and create environment conducive to
higher level thinking. It is important to design an ensemble curriculum that focuses on developing
musicians, rather than just ensemble technicians. As an ensemble leader, discussing the "how" of
error correction and not just "what" provides more thorough musical training. Vocabulary used by
ensemble leaders should encapsulate material of musicianship

Music Therapy Research Summary
Music Therapy Approaches for Treatment of Agitation and Anxiety in Patients with Dementia
Music Therapy Methods The studies reviewed, implemented various music therapy interventions to
older adult dementia patients to examine the effects associated with agitation and anxiety behaviors.
Music therapy methods used throughout the twelve studies include live presentations, pre–recorded
listening activities and instrumental utilization exercises. Two studies utilized a mixed method
model (Ridder, 2013; Chu, 2013). Live presentation approach. Two studies used a live presentation
approach to deliver the intended music therapy (Clare, 2014; Cooke, 2010). Clare?s (2014) case
study examined the effects of a live music presentation by a hired musician after four hours, from
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at a long term care facility. The hired musician played guitar and sang to a

The majority of the reviewed studies used a certified music therapist in the study, either by
conducting or observing the music therapy intervention. In total, a certified music therapist was used
in six studies (Clare, 2014; Sung, 2012; Ridder, 2013; Chu, 2014; Raglio, 2015; Cooke, 2010). Clare
(2014) required a certified music therapist to observe participants during the hired musician?s live
presentation and record wellbeing scores. Cooke (2010) also utilized the certified music therapy in a
similar manner. A musical group of two performed live at every session, and a certified music
therapist introduced the session and was responsible for observing participants during the therapy.
The remaining studies assigned a musical therapist to deliver the selected music therapy approach
(Sung, 2012; Ridder, 2013, Chu, 2014; Raglio, 2015). A systemic review found eleven out of 20
studies utilized a certified music therapist (Ueda, Suzukamo, Sata & Izumi,

A Study On Wartburg College
Wartburg College is nestled in the small Iowa city of Waverly population 10,106. The small campus
of 1,482 is arranged so it is very close together and most buildings are connected by skywalks. Since
the private college is so small, the average class size is eighteen, and the student to faculty ratio is an
impressive 11:1. Of the 1,482 students at Warburg College around 450 are involved in music in
some way. This shows a strong emphasis on and belief in music. There are currently fifteen choral
and instrumental ensembles at Wartburg and there is always potential to be more. They allow people
to form music ensembles and have them supported by the school if a faculty member will sponsor it.
They even have a community symphony that some selected students can play in. With this, the
students can interact more with the Waverly community and form some important business
connections that they can call on in the future. All the ensembles are open to music and non music
majors and they are all open to incoming freshman. Students do not have to be an upperclassmen to
make it into one of the three internationally touring ensembles. Wartburg college has a 4–4–1 class
schedule and this allows the touring ensembles to travel in what they call "May term" or the 1 part
of the class schedule. During that time they only take one class for the whole month of May and
really immerse themselves in it. It is also at this time when most people plan their study abroad
classes. 42% of the 2016 class

Canada (see Table 2.2). Jutras worked closely with NHIMA administrators and music conductors by
emailing (n = 99) band groups resulting in a response rate of 80% (n = 79); 17 groups were excluded
for various reasons. Justras worked closely with three music education professors to develop a
community music questionnaire that ranked 42 benefits from 1 to 10 (1=lowest, 10=highest) in
categories of (1) health, (2) personal, (3) music competencies, and (4) social/cultural benefits.

Coffman's (2008) NHIMA band members practiced 7 hours per week. The SF–36v2 Health Survey
revealed that participants reported NHIMA benefited them by 74% overall well–being, 24%
physical well–being, 21% cognitive stimulation, and 20% socialization (see Table 2.2). The
differences between Jutras' (2011) NHIMA study and Coffman's (2008) NHIMA study are
motivation to learn music, and practicing instruments daily in preparation of rehearsals, which is
standard practice for preparation of community concerts. Perhaps Coffman's (2008) musicians were
more serious in developing their music competency skills and thereby achieved higher levels of
brain activity. Whereas, Jutras' (2011) musicians would fit the definition of health care patients or as
Gates (1991) described them as recreationalists or as Stebbins (1992) described individuals as
amateurs, volunteers, hobbyists, and dabblers. As the authors identified, participants lacked the
motivation to play their instruments at home in preparation for band rehearsals, which are
preparatory for music concerts. The results in these studies suggest the activity and continuity
theories to explain older adults'

Band Performance Review
It was the night that I went to see and support my friend's middle school band performance. I
remember watching and hearing the sounds of certain instruments and being instantly drawn to
them. At the very moment I knew that music was something I wanted to learn and study all through
life. There was something beautiful about the way each individual instrument sounded, and the
abilities that each musician had to make their instruments sound a certain way. The next year I
signed up for my school's band classes and began to learn and study about music and music theory.
The one thing about music though that really captures my interest is the fact that it can provoke and
produce so many emotions in someone. As someone who has a rather hard time expressing
themselves, music was something I could turn to in order to understand and better ... Show more

"Take Five", each section sounded amazing and were able to tell a story. Or how in other
performances sometimes two musicians would solo together, and it would appear as if they were
having a conversation without any words. I would often watch how relaxed and poised they were

A Report on Lifeline for Children’s Choir Directors Essay
Mrs. Bartle employs a little bit of four of each of the methods shared in (the vocal pedagogy) class.
She uses a lot of the Westminister method but borrows from the others. The others she borrows from
are Christiansen, Fred Warning and Wilson/Klein. Much of what she writes, is from her own life's
career experiences as a choral director. The first subject she deals with is the director's attitude. A
director should have a positive attitude. (p. 3, Bartle)
In chapter two she discusses the development of a child's voice in a mechanistic way. She wants the
'flutety' sound of a child's voice developed, between the ages 6–8. (ps. 7–9) This reminds me of the
Westminister method. She tells how to help a child that has problems sing on ... Show more content

Any conductor should study rubato, by listening to some great artists in the past of keyboard, solo
voice and chorale conducting. (p. 29) She gives exercises on how to achieve good balance and blend
in a choir. (p. 20) How to conduct children's choirs is discussed in the following pages of this book.
She describes each 'step' and how to do them carefully: how to introduce music to the choir, what
the choir director should read, how to study a score and practice conducting it, if a conductor should
mouth or use a baton while conducting. To produce artistically played music, she believes that strict
technique must be combined with musical ability. (ps. 31–3)
She tells how to recruit for a school primary choir, grades 1– 3. In September she has the 2nd and
3rd graders sing familiar songs alone or with a friend. She then hands out letters to all the third
graders, and half of the second graders. First graders are not in the music classroom until after
Christmas. She wants about 55 voices in this choir. She then sends a letter home to the parents
containing information on the time and place for rehearsals and programs, requested information on
the child, concerts, uniforms, and the rules. (p. 35) A seating plan and the way the chairs are set up
are two of the physical factors that help make a good choir rehearsal. She advises to have a seating
plan that organizes the children by height, voice and conduct; putting the ones that 'apt' to
misbehave with those that

This song was happy and light. The men were very animated in the song, and used hand gestures to

of the girl's turned away at the beginning of the piece to show that they were upset, using hand
motions to resemble crying. Ultimately, the result was another silly song that was very enjoyable
due to the believable expressions of emotion. Another song the choir performed was O come, O

What Factors Affect The Sound
There are many factors that contribute to an ensembles' sound. Most of which we spend our musical
lives practicing; things like tone, vowels, diction, ect. As we begin to make the transition from
ensemble member to leader we are thrown yet another contributing factor to sound: conducting. The
art of conducting is a continuously growing set of skills for an individual. Many of the greatest
conductors have spent decades perfecting their craft and creating their style, while building their
musicality. One element that sets apart the greatest of conductors is expressivity. Proper expressive
gesture can influence not only audience perception of an ensemble, but also the ensemble sound.
The notion that expression can influence ensemble ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer to this is unfortunately unknown, however that is not to suggest that conductors and
their gestures don't make a difference. Gumm (2012) suggests that musicians actually synchronize
more accurately in performance with an expressive conductor. Acklin (2009) notes that choirs
perform with better precision without a conductor than with a strictly metric conductor (p. 26).
Although research is limited in regards to the influence a conductor has over ensemble sound, it is
comforting to know that this phenomenon is not just figurative, but simply unverified.
Despite the limit of research in this field there are some studies that may explain rather specific
implications of conducting gesture on ensemble sound. Again I would like to refer back to our use of
physiological and psychological variables, but this time link them to conducting factors by
conjoining physiological factors to technical and psychological to expressive factors. Gumm's
(2012) article relays six basic functions of conducting and how these functions relate to either
technical or expressive aspects of conducting.
For technical aspects Gumm (2012) dictates three functions: Mechanical precision, physical
technique, and unrestrained tone. Mechanical precision is basic conducting elements such as beat,
time keeping, and meter (Gumm, 2012). While these elements

My Chemical Romance Emo Culture
My Chemical Romance was a musical band in the subculture of emo, a shortened version of
emotional. MCR was active from 2001 until their disbandment in 2013. Hailing from New Jersey,
this band recreated what it meant to be a band, and what it meant to be in the music industry. Above
all, they tapped into raw human emotions and gave them a soundtrack, and brought a strong
message to carry for an eternity "You are not alone." The band had four main members: singer
Gerard Way, bassist Mikey Way, guitarist Frank Iero (EYE–ear–oh), and drummer Ray Toro. Even
though My Chemical Romance is in the subculture of emo, they have created a category all on their
own by uniting with their fans and using human emotions to write lyrics that resonate with people ...

As a personal fan, I don't think any band could be a perfect copy of My Chemical Romance or their
music, but some could come close to it. In order to make an impact through the lyrics, a band needs
a story. Just like Gerard Way and the rest of his band mates, a prospective band need something
people can relate to and understand. That is the biggest key to making a hit song, besides finding the
right beat and tone. The singer was suicidal, a borderline alcoholic and an on and off again drug
abuser. When the band booked to play a show in Japan in August 2004, Way didn't bother packing a
suitcase because he was so self convinced was he that he wouldn't be returning home alive. After
ten–minutes of vomiting on–stage in Tokyo, he realized he badly needed help (Anderson). This
helped to create the following album, "Welcome To The Black Parade." I think the biggest thing a
band would need is to be united and open. With My Chemical Romance, it was not just "Gerard
Way and those other dudes behind him." It was all collaborative. According to an interview with
Gerard Way conducted by Daniel Lane of TeamRock, "It's not an ego thing or because everyone
wants equal time, it's because we ARE a gang. The weird thing about this gang is that there's no
leader. We don't want it to become anyone's 'show', because ultimately that detracts

What Is My Journey To Music Essay
Picking up a new instrument or musical skill may not be the first thing that appeals to you as a great

After all, those of us who have put in many years in the workforce are probably used to being the

good at – may seem like a recipe for frustration and failure. Because we are not necessarily
guaranteed to be surrounded by other people our age who are also just learning, the prospect of
embarking on such a musical journey may seem daunting. Apart from the joy to be derived from the

Music Concert # 1
On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first
vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began
with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used
walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two
soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo
performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band.
The second performance had a piano opening which led to vocals joining in at the same time as the

joined together to lead to a female solo which was particularly interesting since she was scatting.
The second performance of this ensemble was "Spring can really hang you up the most" which
consisted of 3/4 time and 4/4 time. This started with a female solo vocalist then a male one. The
band as a whole played together and ended with a male solo scatting. The third and shortest
performance of the night was a vocal acapella piece, "Love walked in" which was short and sweet.
The fourth performance of the night was a Richmond Rogers piece. This had a rhythmic swing/salsa
feel from the "Lady is a tramp". This started with the rhythm section, with the male vocalist and
horns. Then the female vocalist from the choir joined and concluded this piece. The fifth
performance for the group was a sequel to voice stand an acapella piece by Greg Jaspers. This song
started with the choir using their voices as the instruments altogether. The final performance of the

Descriptive Essay On The County Fair
"This is going to be the best night of our lives!" Judy exclaimed as they walked up to the fair. Her
excitement was felt by the rest of her comrades, who could not help but be swept up in the feeling.
"I can't wait to see all of those other ban–," Joe whispered sadly as he gazed upon the fifty other up–
and–coming groups.
"But we may still have a shot. Good thing we have those instruments in the bus," Janet interjected.
"I have a good feeling about this," commented James with a smirk. He was up to something.
It was the hottest summer on record; even the locals were shocked at the sweltering temperatures
and the lack of rain in their small Southern town. Older generations sat around the air conditioner,
telling stories of how it hasn't been this hot since August of '59. However, Judy did not care about
the drought that was plaguing her hometown or about how there was not any ice for sixty–seven
miles. The lead guitarist was losing feeling in her fingers, getting cramps in her legs, and wishing
like she had during Christmas season. She was preparing for the most important event of her
favorite season– the county fair.
Filled with vibrant colors, the aromas of funnel cake, and squealing kids on carousels, the Partridge
County fair was everyone's favorite event. It boasted fifty contemporary music groups with talented
vocalists, guitarists, and banjoists. However, there was one problem with the fair. Groups were

Music : My Most Important Role In My School
Music has became a major role in my life, I could not live without it. I have met many people who
share the same passions as I do. The inviting atmosphere and enthusiasm was inspirational and
motivating. The most rewarding part of every event was the performances. The rush of adrenaline
and excitement would flow throughout every ensemble member. My most significant contribution to
my school is all of the orchestras that I have participated in. I have attended the Honor Orchestra of
America, Indianapolis Side–by–Side Program, Hendricks Symphony, Avon High School Symphony
Orchestra, the Musical Pit Orchestra, and the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble. I have been in almost
every ensemble available where I live. I feel very accomplished with my achievements. By
attending all these ensembles, I have made my school more well known in the Performing Arts for
Orchestra.
Ever since I was young, my dream was to become a doctor who treats individuals who are in need. I
always pay attention in my sciences courses, attentively learning as much as possible. However, my
dreams have changed quite a bit. I still hold onto my dream of becoming a doctor, but another dream
has come into view. I also dream of becoming a concert violinist. At Rice, I would major in Biology
and enroll in Pre–Medicine or Pre–Pharmacy. I would also major in violin performance, which
means that I would double major. If the workload is overbearing, I would perform in the orchestra. I
am also interested in studying abroad; I feel that this would give me a better view on what life is like
outside of America.
In my Prep for College and Careers class when I was a Freshman, we had to take a survey. It was to
see what our interests were. As to what I expected, my interests were in science and music.
Following the survey, we researched which university would be the best fit for us. On every website
I visited, Rice was always one of the top contenders. Eventually, it peaked my interest and I began
to look into this school. What I love about Rice the most was the Shepherd School of Music. It is
one the top music schools in the country in less than 40 years. The program was awe inspiring, I
wish I could be in a music program like this. The quality and the dedication each

Personal Narrative: How Music Therapy Changed My Life
When I started band, I was in the sixth grade, which was a year later than a lot of people in my band.
Neither my parents or step–parents were in band, so they were hesitant to let me join. Once I was in
Mr. Sacco's music class, and got to experience what his personality was like (super fun, caring, and
spunky), and told my parents. I joined band immediately, or as soon as I could, sixth grade. Even
though I was a year behind, my band director as well as the others in my section helped me a lot.
Since the beginning of my band experience, I have made many close friendships and had a ton of
amazing experiences that may not have happened if it weren't for band. Everyone always has the
most fun on band related trips, from going to auditions, to going to Florida for a week. It has truly
been an honor to be in the Ava Pride Band for the past seven years.
Coming soon, I have my audition to be in the band at Drury. I've auditioned for many things,
including the District band, our local SCA conference band, State band, and even just for my band
directors for the seating chart. I'm very nervous, but recently I've started going to private lessons ...

Music Therapy is a recently growing career, and has many different ways it can be used. You can
sooth a dying patient, help an elderly with alzheimer's, assist a child with ADHD, and many other
things, just with the power of music. An interesting fact about Music Therapy is that it can actually
repair brain damage. To further my knowledge in Music Therapy, and get started for my future, I
will be attending Drury University. In Missouri, there are only approximately three colleges which
provide Music Therapy as a major. One of the major reasons as to why I chose Drury is because it is
very close to home, as well as my high school band. I plan to be in many music related things in
college, including different band ensembles, choir ensembles, and even the ukulele

King David's Dance Analysis
On Tuesday, April 11, I attended the University of Evansville's Springs Classic Wind Ensemble
production, which was performed in their Neu Chapel Sanctuary. The wind ensemble was composed
of approximately forty–five performers. The various instruments included piccolo, bassoon,
euphonium, as well as the typical wind and brass instruments such as clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and
trombones. The University of Evansville's wind ensemble was conducted by Kenneth Steinsultz.
The wind ensemble opened the performance with their own variation of Stephen Shewan's King
David's Dance. The song comes from his album "Parables of God and Man," which was released in
1997 (Albany Records). Before performing the second song, Kenneth Steinsultz warned the

Shewan has composed music for various medias including orchestras, ensembles, and choirs. In
"Biography of Stephen Shewan", Jubal Press claims "he has the unique ability to join atonal
technique with romanticism, resulting in music that is much more than mere mental manipulation of
pitches. It is highly evocative and expressive." Numerous critics believe Shewan shows a well–
developed understanding of choral voice and properly uses a comfortable command of both lyrical
expression and varied romantic–to–modern harmonization. "Stephen Shewan is a considerable
composer who deserves a wide audience," and that is why his music doesn't fall under one category
(Jubal Press). Lastly, Juraj Filas' Concerto for Horn and Wind Orchestra was composed during the
early twenty–first century. Like the twentieth century, modern composers search for exciting and
different modes of expression. Unusual harmonies, tonal schemes, and the manipulation of rhythms
create unique styles of music. However, some of the greatest composers stick to the traditional
forms of music that way an average listener can still easily appreciate and enjoy

Buena Vista Social Club Essay
In Wim Wender's Buena Vista Social Club, a sense provoking landscape is created through sounds
and visuals of both Havana and the collaborative musical effort of the members of Buena Vista
Social Club. Although we have examined many examples of landscapes through photographs and
paintings, the documentary offers a unique observance of landscape through its incorporation of
moving images and the sounds that accompany them. This is especially important when analyzing
this film's landscape, as the music embodies not only the main achievement of the group, but of the
sounds of Havana and its past. Buena Vista Social Club offers an interesting perspective on how
Havana's landscape has crumbled, changed and disappeared, only to be reconstituted through ...

Throughout the entire film, the unknown audience follows along with the story of the Buena Vista
Social Club through a concert that Brian Davis would describe as a contact zone, which is a "social
place where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other" (Davis 84). In this interaction the
Buena Vista Social Club serves as the center, while the audience serves as the periphery that is
receiving ideas, images, and materials from the center through the lyrics of the song and music
being played by the instruments (Davis 83). Most of the songs that Buena Vista Social Club perform
are centered around the day to day struggles and celebrations of the people of Havana, whether that
be a city dweller or a campesino. The performance by the group is thus an auditory landscape of the
true lifestyle of the Havana natives and it is inherently an exhibit to the outsider of the crumbled
landscape of 1950s Havana that was reconstructed through the Buena Vista Social Club musical
project. Although the focus is primarily on the Buena Vista Social Club, the audience plays its part
in the landscape of this contact zone by expressing their approval and the excitement brought about
by the performance of the music group through the cheers and applause that can be heard throughout

Jeanne Louise Dumont Farrenc.
Jeanne–Louise Dumont Farrenc; born May 31st, 1804 in Paris, was a virtuosa pianist, teacher, and
French composer who started out during the early romantic era but remained unknown to the world.
She comes from a very large dynasty of famous sculptors; such as her brother, Augustin–Alexandre
Dumont, her father, Jacques–Edme Dumont, her grandfather, Edme Dumont, her great–grandfather,
François Dumont, and her great–great–grandfather, Pierre Dumont.
She began her piano studies at an early age along with Cecile Soria, who was a former student of
Muzio Clementi. When her abilities in the world of professional pianists became quite clear, she was
given the chance to learn from several masters, such as Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk
Hummel. In 1819, at 15 years of age, she managed to study with Anton Reicha, the composition
teacher at the Conservatoire; due to the talents she showed as a composer. Although, during this
time, composition classes were open only to men; and not women.
Louise Farrenc; just like many others, managed to fall through the cracks because throughout the
19th–century, the opinion of the French musical was dominated solely by opera; which meant
French composers were not able to obtain any sort of reputation, whether good or bad, without first
achieving a fairly reasonable amount of success in the opera. However, "[any] composer...bold

Chitlin's Influence On American Culture
It is with great pleasure that I recommend Shawn Stitt for admission to the graduate program of his
choosing. I first came to know Shawn through an undergraduate course of mine, Folksongs and
Ballads. The course comprised of a diversified look at American culture through folk traditions and
songs, which weaves the appalachian culture in the east, cajun culture in the southwest, and a
widespread look at the effect of the African–American diaspora on American culture. Shawn
distinguished himself by submitting an exceptionally well–researched and interesting essay on the
influence and communal purpose of the organ throughout American culture that characterized the
intersectionality of music and its communities. His ability to communicate his thesis in a clear,
concise and well researched manner distinguished him from his fellow classmates. Overall, I would
rank him in the 95th percentile of students that I have taught in the past several years in respect of
his writing ability and research skills. Shawn is the first pupil I have given a letter of

The Effects Of Music Programs On Students
The Knowledge of reading music, and playing an instrument has proven to be beneficial to the
learning curb in students including those of little to no background in a literary education to students
in college. However, there are schools in America where music isn't offered. Having a music
program could create improved grades, memory, concentration, and quicken the learning process of
literacy, but it is believed that music isn't for everybody. Many parents and administrators believe
that music is just a waste of time and doesn 't help a student academically. It has been stated and
shown in media of all sorts that music doesn't help kids academically and is only a distraction with
potentially harmful effects. For example, in John McDaniel's words on the negative effects of music
in school,: "Music programs in school can promote competition and rivalry among peers. In most
music programs, students compete for certain positions and chairs, and they must practice and oust
their peers in order to climb the ranks in the section. This can lead to bad feelings and competitive
values among young children, which can be harmful to their future development."
It is understood why this has been stressed against music in schools. However, it is faulty. Other
beliefs are that it does more harm than good because "it affects grades negatively". In the words of
John McDaniel, "They claim that students will spend too much time on practicing, trips and
performances, which will affect

middle school band director chose me along with a few others to represent the school in a regional

A Brief Note On The Nepalese Music Band
Nepalese Music Band: Nepathya
Nepathya is a music band that was formed in the early 1990s. In 1990, nine young boys started a

They were nine different people but came together to achieve a goal, met at Kathmandu during their
college and formed a "Nepathya". At first, they used to sing in the concert in the street and in the
restaurant. As time passed by they began to broadcast through radio. They started to begin famous
among people. Later, in 1995 they released their first album named "Tal ko Pani" which was loved
by the whole country. After that, they continued their journey of music and till date they released 15
albums. Among them, "Resham" is the most popular song and also one of my best songs. In their
struggling phase, the band only sang the folk song with the theme of nature and love, but as the time
passed they started singing the song based on patriotism, peace, and issue of the country. They
started their career by singing the song that focuses on love and nature because the type of song they
used to sing mostly loved by the audience. They sang a song which is more oriented to the audience.

Music Plays A Influence On My Life
Music plays a tremendous role in my life and always has. From the age of five, my parents
introduced to me to one particular type of music, which was gospel and it has been a part of who I
am ever since. I can remember waking up early on Sunday morning hearing gospel music from artist
such as Kim Burrell, Shirley Caesar, and Mary Mary. I began learning these particular gospel songs
and then I gained the courage to sing these songs in church. At that moment, I knew singing was a
passion of mine and music became food to my soul. I would have to say the moment in my life
where I strongly became influenced by music was as a child between the ages of five and twelve.
Then when I entered middle school, I joined the school band. I played two instruments, the
trombone and trumpet. Although I truly enjoyed playing those two instruments, I've always dreamed
of playing the piano or violin but I never gained the opportunity to receive lessons. During the
seventh grade, I joined the Needwood Middle School Choir. We sung gospel music and Christmas
music during the holiday season. With gaining so much musical experience during my time in
Middle School, my church appointed me to Youth Choir Director for Salem St. John Baptist Church.

Gospel music is because of the messages behind this type of music. God comes first and he truly is

Choral Chorus Research Paper
A choral ensemble is an organized group of singers, varying in size, that perform together with an
orchestra or opera company. Choral ensembles have been around for thousands and thousands of
years. They have been around for so long that the ancient Greeks used a chorus in their live Greek
Dramas as a major part of their storytelling. Some may believe that a chorus just needs to have
lovely singers in their group and they are good, but that is not the case. In a choral ensemble,
numerous factors like teamwork, participation, attendance, and discipline can make or break a

It seems like a waste of time if you learn all the songs and come to all the practices and concerts and
just mouth the words the whole time. It may seem like your voice does not matter in an enormous
choral ensemble, but if every single person in that ensemble were to have a mindset like that, no one
would be singing. Also, every voice does matter and can impact a group. If you're not confident in
your voice and that is why you're not participating, then you are robbing yourself out of good
practice time. The more you practice and sing, even if it is done poorly, the more you will improve.
It is also crucial to participate even when the ensemble is not singing. Answering a question that the
teacher asks shows that you are being attentive and are always listening to your teacher. When an
instructor asks a question that they want the choir to answer and no one answers it shows that no one
is paying attention and it is very disrespectful. Finally, and most importantly, working together as a
team is crucial for a choral ensemble to function properly. When a chorus is in harmony, they make
the best...harmonies. When there is tension and negativity surrounding an ensemble, it is heard
through their music and it does not sound good. Teamwork is the foundation of all choral ensembles.
The better the relationship of the group, the better and more

Auto Wreck

  • 1. Auto Wreck Auto Wreck by Karl Shapiro is an impressionistic poem that delves into the understanding of technology and the horrific contentment that society has with automobile wrecks. Written during the 1940's Shapiro has been known for writing about simplistic things yet with grave detail. In Auto Wreck Shapiro uses similes and metaphors to describe a surreal feeling of an automobile wreck. He has determined that everyday citizens have become too detached from the everyday violence caused by automobiles. Shapiro aims to prove that the mechanical monsters that threaten everyday life have become too mundane in today's society. During the poem, Karl Shapiro uses an abundance of similes and metaphors to describe the fantasy–like setting of an automobile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He states that every auto wreck can cause a massive amount of danger while being ignored by the common people around the wreckage. He goes on to describe the wreckage as "Empty husks of locusts" (Line 20) how they are locust–like in the destruction that they cause. An auto wreck is an extravagant and almost unreal in the destruction that it causes to the people involved. He describes the people by saying "We are deranged, walking among the cops." (Line 15) He is showing how the people are mentally disturbed by the extreme amount of damage that has happened. Shapiro then goes into detail describing the way the police cover up the horrific violence that has happened. "One with a bucket douches ponds of blood" (Line 18) this line referees to the police washing away the heavy ponds of blood in the streets. This seems to be common for the police as they already have an understanding of how to deal with this extravagant violence. He details the world around him and how some officers have different jobs when cleaning the car crash up. The officers almost seemed detached from this violence as they have become used to this violence. It's a horrific thought that these officers could be so accepting of this dark ... • 3. Latin School Concert Report It was January 7th, 2017, the weather alert had been right, there was a pretty darn big snowstorm outside, but inside, of the Boston Latin School auditorium, the 10th Annual MMEA Eastern Senior District Festival were filled with excited spirits that were much bigger. There was a smattering of students from each school in the Eastern District, and many BLS students were part of them. A feeling of awe and admiration floated through me as I saw them enter the stage. In 4 years, I would be just like them, I hoped. There were 4 fantastic music ensembles that would perform: Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Chorus. Each group had a particular conductor, but all performed with much skill, gusto, and professionalism. The first to perform was the Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Emily Threinen (Director of Bands at the Univeristy of Minnesota School of Music), with pieces such "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli and "Sheltering Sky" by John Mackey. The ensemble's prominent performance, however, was in its last piece, "Scenes from the Louvre" by Norman dello Joio. From the opening movement to the last note, the entire auditorium was filled with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following show was the Senior Jazz Band, with only 20 students, conducted by Dr. Andrew Goodrich (Director of various Jazz Bands, writer of reviews and articles realted to Jazz education, etc). The ensemble played many jazz classics, such as "Nolstalgia in Times Square" by the bassist Charles Mingus, and"Body and Soul" by George Stone. They also incorporated some other songs, such as "Tuning Up" by Toshiki Akiyoshi, and "Count Bubba" by George Goodwin. Throughout the entire performance, many soloists popped up and played with such tone and mood and dedication, with riffs and dazzling techniques. The group also had wonderful cooperation and harmony with each other. Right after a song ended, the crowd would erupt into cheering ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Personal Narrative The most powerful moment that has happened to me involving music happened in the middle of my seventh grade year. Prior to seventh grade, I played the violin but desired to learn the Double Bass. I asked a few times if I could switch instruments so that I could fulfil that desire, but my teacher always turned me down telling me that I should just stick with the violin, this of course made me devasted. Then the following school year, the teacher asked if anybody could play Bass because Alex (the bassist) had moved to a different school and we had only one bassist left in the orchestra and at that moment I got my chance to learn an instrument that I not only loved to hear, but also loved to look at, listen to and play. My teacher was skeptical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I started to practice every day, doing music activities outside of school, offering to do extra performances during concerts and if I wasn't in orchestra at school, I was doing something over the summer that would help me be the best musician I could possibly be. This whole series of change was set off from the moment I put my bow on that Bass and it has changed my life for the better such as, my future aspirations, I want to pursue a career in music now because not only do I love doing things with music, but being paid for doing something that I enjoy would be a blessing! Also, the way that I see the world, music and myself, has changed drastically, for once in my life I actually see myself as an empowering individual that is capable of doing anything I set myself to do, for once I Actually can say to myself that I am proud of what I have accomplished, for once I can also say that I am happy with my life and that I finally found something worth living for. Today, in my eyes, I see the world and music as a partnership, without music the world would be boring, music has so much meaning to us that we fail to realize, people show emotion through music and speak to those who need ... • 7. High School Band Research Paper Auditioning for the Missouri State Band was a high school dream come true for me. The countless hours of practice and dedication that I put into my audition material made me one of the potential candidates to have a seat in the ensemble. To have gotten this far meant that I had been selected to perform in my district band. However, the audition that I had passed for admittance into my district band did not prepare me for the challenged that I had before me. Behind the door leading into the audition room would be four adjudicators. Those four adjudicators would decide my fate; would I be accepted or turned away? I had prepared for this moment for six consecutive months, hours upon hours of practice. Every day I practiced the same musical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I got up from my seat on the floor against the lockers and walked into the room. Sitting at a table facing the wall was a line of adjudicators who would judge my playing ability and determine whether or not I pass. I placed my music on the lone stand in the middle of the room. My mouth became dry and my hands started to shake more vigorously. I started to play. My first task was my chromatic scale, every note that my instrument, clarinet, is capable of playing. Something that outside the audition room that would otherwise seem elementary for me, however, I was incapable of completing the whole exercise. My heart starting beating faster and faster, my mouth still dry, my lungs feel as though they are failing. I continued through my audition, each etude progressively getting worse than the previous. Finally, one judicator thanks me and I am shown out through the door by the room monitor. Standing outside the door I felt a sense of relief, but I also felt like a failure. I had spent hours preparing for this audition only to fail in a matter of seconds. When the final callbacks were posted and my name was not listed I was reminded yet again of my failure. However, I knew that this was not a true indication of my musical talent. I was accepted in my district band and that is what I am still proud of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His first choral composition "Go Lovely Rose" incorporates many musical elements. When I first listened to this song, I was shocked by how amazing it sounded, this is a very beautiful choral piece. The song is an acapella piece and he uses very rich harmonies that switch from being consonant and dissonant. There are also parts of the song when they sing in unison. One big element that he uses in this song is imitative polyphony. At the part of the song when the choir sings "Then died that she ",the soprano comes in then the alto then the tenor then the bass and there are also other parts of this song where that occurs. He also used a lot of dynamic contrast in this song. There were parts of the song where they would crescendo and decrescendo and this would shape the phrases. • 11. Essay on Contemporary Choral Music Contemporary Choral Compositions Most people that live in the modern generation view choral music as old, boring harmonies whose composers died with kings. However, choral music is not just for the elderly singing hymns apathetically in the church pews on Sunday morning. Though the perception of it remains unenthusiastic among common listeners, the life of choral music is not as dead or boring as most would assume. Choral music is made modern, enjoyable, and vibrant through the works of contemporary composers. Although it is not as recognized in modern generations, brilliant vocal compositions and composers still exist today. Two of the most recognized composers of contemporary choral music today are Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While reading love poems, Lauridsen became increasingly intrigued by the symbolic image of flames that recurred within the context. "I decided to compose an intensely dramatic cycle based on Renaissance love poems employing this fire motive while blending stylistic musical features of the period with contemporary compositional idiom," says Lauridsen. The musical textures of this composition are replete with Renaissance techniques, including word painting, modality, intricate counterpoint, and bold harmonies unified by what Lauridsen terms the "fire chord," a minor triad with an added major seventh. The six movements of Madrigali, in order, include Ov'è, Lass', Il Bel Viso?, Quando Son Più Lontan, Amor, Io Sento L'Alma, Io Piango, Luci Serene e Chiare, and Se per Havervi, Oimè. In the final movement, Se per Havervi, Oimè, the text translates to: "If, alas, when I gave you my heart, There was born in me that passion, Cruel Lady, which burns me everywhere So that I am all aflame, And if, loving you, bitter torment Makes me die of sorrow, Wretched me! What shall I do Without you who are my every joy?" [Play Madrigali] Lauridsen explains, "I wanted this music to emanate (like ripples from a pebble thrown into a pond) from a single, primal sonority; one dramatic chord that would encapsulate the intensity of the entire cycle and which would provide a musical motivic unity to ... • 13. Designing An Ensemble Curriculum Instrumental ensembles are vital to the liberal arts core in college programs. Both aspects should function collaboratively, teaching students to reach their full potential, think critically, and develop patterns of rich, diverse thought. While producing a high level musical experience, instrumental music programs must train complete musicians, performers, and create environment conducive to higher level thinking. It is important to design an ensemble curriculum that focuses on developing musicians, rather than just ensemble technicians. As an ensemble leader, discussing the "how" of error correction and not just "what" provides more thorough musical training. The small campus of 1,482 is arranged so it is very close together and most buildings are connected by skywalks. Since the private college is so small, the average class size is eighteen, and the student to faculty ratio is an impressive 11:1. Of the 1,482 students at Warburg College around 450 are involved in music in some way. This shows a strong emphasis on and belief in music. There are currently fifteen choral and instrumental ensembles at Wartburg and there is always potential to be more. They allow people to form music ensembles and have them supported by the school if a faculty member will sponsor it. They even have a community symphony that some selected students can play in. With this, the students can interact more with the Waverly community and form some important business connections that they can call on in the future. All the ensembles are open to music and non music majors and they are all open to incoming freshman. Students do not have to be an upperclassmen to make it into one of the three internationally touring ensembles. Wartburg college has a 4–4–1 class schedule and this allows the touring ensembles to travel in what they call "May term" or the 1 part of the class schedule. During that time they only take one class for the whole month of May and really immerse themselves in it. Unlike Jutras' study of NHIMA band musicians who practiced 3.75 hours per week, Coffman's (2008) NHIMA band members practiced 7 hours per week. The SF–36v2 Health Survey revealed that participants reported NHIMA benefited them by 74% overall well–being, 24% physical well–being, 21% cognitive stimulation, and 20% socialization (see Table 2.2). The differences between Jutras' (2011) NHIMA study and Coffman's (2008) NHIMA study are motivation to learn music, and practicing instruments daily in preparation of rehearsals, which is standard practice for preparation of community concerts. Perhaps Coffman's (2008) musicians were more serious in developing their music competency skills and thereby achieved higher levels of brain activity. Whereas, Jutras' (2011) musicians would fit the definition of health care patients or as Gates (1991) described them as recreationalists or as Stebbins (1992) described individuals as amateurs, volunteers, hobbyists, and dabblers. As the authors identified, participants lacked the motivation to play their instruments at home in preparation for band rehearsals, which are preparatory for music concerts. • 23. Band Performance Review It was the night that I went to see and support my friend's middle school band performance. I remember watching and hearing the sounds of certain instruments and being instantly drawn to them. At the very moment I knew that music was something I wanted to learn and study all through life. There was something beautiful about the way each individual instrument sounded, and the abilities that each musician had to make their instruments sound a certain way. The next year I signed up for my school's band classes and began to learn and study about music and music theory. The one thing about music though that really captures my interest is the fact that it can provoke and produce so many emotions in someone. My favorite and most inspiring performance had to be "Take Five", each section sounded amazing and were able to tell a story. Or how in other performances sometimes two musicians would solo together, and it would appear as if they were having a conversation without any words. I would often watch how relaxed and poised they were and try to copy that demeanor when having to give solos in front of the class. Also by watching professionals perform, I could see the true difference between me and them, and how much work I needed to put into my playing to maybe one day move my fingers and rearrange my embouchure in order to play like them with such ... • 25. A Report on Lifeline for Children’s Choir Directors Essay Mrs. Bartle employs a little bit of four of each of the methods shared in (the vocal pedagogy) class. She uses a lot of the Westminister method but borrows from the others. The others she borrows from are Christiansen, Fred Warning and Wilson/Klein. Much of what she writes, is from her own life's career experiences as a choral director. The first subject she deals with is the director's attitude. A director should have a positive attitude. (p. 3, Bartle) In chapter two she discusses the development of a child's voice in a mechanistic way. She wants the 'flutety' sound of a child's voice developed, between the ages 6–8. (ps. 7–9) This reminds me of the Westminister method. She tells how to help a child that has problems sing on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Any conductor should study rubato, by listening to some great artists in the past of keyboard, solo voice and chorale conducting. (p. 29) She gives exercises on how to achieve good balance and blend in a choir. (p. 20) How to conduct children's choirs is discussed in the following pages of this book. She describes each 'step' and how to do them carefully: how to introduce music to the choir, what the choir director should read, how to study a score and practice conducting it, if a conductor should mouth or use a baton while conducting. To produce artistically played music, she believes that strict technique must be combined with musical ability. (ps. 31–3) She tells how to recruit for a school primary choir, grades 1– 3. In September she has the 2nd and 3rd graders sing familiar songs alone or with a friend. She then hands out letters to all the third graders, and half of the second graders. First graders are not in the music classroom until after Christmas. She wants about 55 voices in this choir. She then sends a letter home to the parents containing information on the time and place for rehearsals and programs, requested information on the child, concerts, uniforms, and the rules. (p. 35) A seating plan and the way the chairs are set up are two of the physical factors that help make a good choir rehearsal. • 29. What Factors Affect The Sound There are many factors that contribute to an ensembles' sound. Most of which we spend our musical lives practicing; things like tone, vowels, diction, ect. As we begin to make the transition from ensemble member to leader we are thrown yet another contributing factor to sound: conducting. The art of conducting is a continuously growing set of skills for an individual. Many of the greatest conductors have spent decades perfecting their craft and creating their style, while building their musicality. One element that sets apart the greatest of conductors is expressivity. Proper expressive gesture can influence not only audience perception of an ensemble, but also the ensemble sound. The notion that expression can influence ensemble ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer to this is unfortunately unknown, however that is not to suggest that conductors and their gestures don't make a difference. Gumm (2012) suggests that musicians actually synchronize more accurately in performance with an expressive conductor. Acklin (2009) notes that choirs perform with better precision without a conductor than with a strictly metric conductor (p. 26). Although research is limited in regards to the influence a conductor has over ensemble sound, it is comforting to know that this phenomenon is not just figurative, but simply unverified. Despite the limit of research in this field there are some studies that may explain rather specific implications of conducting gesture on ensemble sound. Again I would like to refer back to our use of physiological and psychological variables, but this time link them to conducting factors by conjoining physiological factors to technical and psychological to expressive factors. Gumm's (2012) article relays six basic functions of conducting and how these functions relate to either technical or expressive aspects of conducting. For technical aspects Gumm (2012) dictates three functions: Mechanical precision, physical technique, and unrestrained tone. Mechanical precision is basic conducting elements such as beat, time keeping, and meter (Gumm, 2012). While these elements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. My Chemical Romance Emo Culture My Chemical Romance was a musical band in the subculture of emo, a shortened version of emotional. MCR was active from 2001 until their disbandment in 2013. Hailing from New Jersey, this band recreated what it meant to be a band, and what it meant to be in the music industry. Above all, they tapped into raw human emotions and gave them a soundtrack, and brought a strong message to carry for an eternity "You are not alone." The band had four main members: singer Gerard Way, bassist Mikey Way, guitarist Frank Iero (EYE–ear–oh), and drummer Ray Toro. Even though My Chemical Romance is in the subculture of emo, they have created a category all on their own by uniting with their fans and using human emotions to write lyrics that resonate with people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a personal fan, I don't think any band could be a perfect copy of My Chemical Romance or their music, but some could come close to it. In order to make an impact through the lyrics, a band needs a story. Just like Gerard Way and the rest of his band mates, a prospective band need something people can relate to and understand. That is the biggest key to making a hit song, besides finding the right beat and tone. The singer was suicidal, a borderline alcoholic and an on and off again drug abuser. When the band booked to play a show in Japan in August 2004, Way didn't bother packing a suitcase because he was so self convinced was he that he wouldn't be returning home alive. After ten–minutes of vomiting on–stage in Tokyo, he realized he badly needed help (Anderson). This helped to create the following album, "Welcome To The Black Parade." I think the biggest thing a band would need is to be united and open. With My Chemical Romance, it was not just "Gerard Way and those other dudes behind him." It was all collaborative. According to an interview with Gerard Way conducted by Daniel Lane of TeamRock, "It's not an ego thing or because everyone wants equal time, it's because we ARE a gang. I have attended the Honor Orchestra of America, Indianapolis Side–by–Side Program, Hendricks Symphony, Avon High School Symphony Orchestra, the Musical Pit Orchestra, and the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble. However, my dreams have changed quite a bit. I still hold onto my dream of becoming a doctor, but another dream has come into view. I also dream of becoming a concert violinist. At Rice, I would major in Biology and enroll in Pre–Medicine or Pre–Pharmacy. I would also major in violin performance, which means that I would double major. If the workload is overbearing, I would perform in the orchestra. I am also interested in studying abroad; I feel that this would give me a better view on what life is like outside of America. Eventually, it peaked my interest and I began to look into this school. What I love about Rice the most was the Shepherd School of Music. Jeanne–Louise Dumont Farrenc; born May 31st, 1804 in Paris, was a virtuosa pianist, teacher, and French composer who started out during the early romantic era but remained unknown to the world. She comes from a very large dynasty of famous sculptors; such as her brother, Augustin–Alexandre Dumont, her father, Jacques–Edme Dumont, her grandfather, Edme Dumont, her great–grandfather, François Dumont, and her great–great–grandfather, Pierre Dumont. She began her piano studies at an early age along with Cecile Soria, who was a former student of Muzio Clementi. When her abilities in the world of professional pianists became quite clear, she was given the chance to learn from several masters, such as Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. In 1819, at 15 years of age, she managed to study with Anton Reicha, the composition teacher at the Conservatoire; due to the talents she showed as a composer. Although, during this time, composition classes were open only to men; and not women. Louise Farrenc; just like many others, managed to fall through the cracks because throughout the 19th–century, the opinion of the French musical was dominated solely by opera; which meant French composers were not able to obtain any sort of reputation, whether good or bad, without first achieving a fairly reasonable amount of success in the opera. The Effects Of Music Programs On Students The Knowledge of reading music, and playing an instrument has proven to be beneficial to the learning curb in students including those of little to no background in a literary education to students in college. However, there are schools in America where music isn't offered. Having a music program could create improved grades, memory, concentration, and quicken the learning process of literacy, but it is believed that music isn't for everybody. Many parents and administrators believe that music is just a waste of time and doesn 't help a student academically. It has been stated and shown in media of all sorts that music doesn't help kids academically and is only a distraction with potentially harmful effects. For example, in John McDaniel's words on the negative effects of music in school,: "Music programs in school can promote competition and rivalry among peers. In most music programs, students compete for certain positions and chairs, and they must practice and oust their peers in order to climb the ranks in the section. This can lead to bad feelings and competitive values among young children, which can be harmful to their future development." It is understood why this has been stressed against music in schools. • 61. Musical Event : Uga Percussion Ensemble Essay On April 6th, the University of Georgia had a musical event entitled "UGA Percussion Ensemble." It was held at Hugh Hodgson School of Music in the Ramsey Concert Hall. There were eighteen talented performers with two skilled directors. The directors were Mr. Timothy K. Adams Jr. and Ms. Kimberly Toscano Adams. There was a total of seven percussion performances. The venue was smaller than expected but it was breathtakingly beautiful. The musicians played old and new percussion pieces. Newly composed pieces such as Burning Green, composed in 2013, The Frame Problem, 2003, and The Loneliness of Sana Claus, 1994. The older pieces that performed in the concert where Rite of the Black Sun, Off–Axis, and Mark V: Marimba Toccata. All of the musical works were beautifully composed percussion pieces, and the musicians did the works justice. The first performance was performed by Bradley Robinson, Lauren Floyd, Quintin Mallette, and Wesley Sumpter. This group of gifted musicians performed Rite of the Black Sun (1980) composed by Anne LeBaron. This percussion quartet executed this difficult piece with great skill and I was truly captivated by their pure talent. The first performance usually sets the mood of the concert. A calm relaxed mood was set after this performance and it continued until the end of the concert. During every transition period, The two directors, Mr.Timothy K. Adams Jr and Ms.Kimberly Toscano Adams, would get on each side of the stage and divert our attention ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Concert Review: At The Movies Saturday, March 5th, Tim, Thomas, Hunter and myself drove out to Lexington to watch the show put out by the Met Winds called "At the Movies". This show's premise was how important and impactful music in a movie or performance can be. From the importance not only added my music in a scene with suspense or terror to heighten a mood but also for example in the show when a man in a chariot is making his way around an arena filled with thousands of people without the music it was very prosaic. This show was truly a learning experience for me about not only the master class these musicians that live and work in close circles with me, including our band teacher Mr. Carron, but also how skillfully movie directors and sound editors are to encapsulate ... Personal Narrative: Why Connections Are Imperative Why Connections Are Imperative On August 25, the majority freshman class and the transfer students attended the Fall Convocation, unfortunately I was unable to attend. The reason for my absence is I was attending the first University of Mississippi string orchestra practice of my college career. I was asked to join the orchestra by Dr. Riggs, a violin teacher here at the University. He gave me a scholarship to just play in the orchestra, I have been playing the violin for thirteen years now. Dr. Riggs helped me a few years back master a pice I had been working on for a while, so he knew my talent level. From what I hear, from my fellow freshman class, the convocation was a very enlightening experience along with extremely successful motivating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. I Attended The University Of Indianapolis Chamber... I attended the University of Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble concert on Thursday, October 8. The concert was located at the Ruth Lily Performance Hall in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. The venue was calming and comfortable. It is a very nice set up, but not extremely fancy. People arrived in anything ranging from suits and dresses to jeans and t– shirts. The environment was welcoming and approachable for all the guests. I was able to see almost all of the parts of the stage and all the members of each group. Noise levels throughout the concert were very low. The only thing that would've have been nice is if they could have dimmed the audience lights to create a better mood. The lights in the auditorium just seemed to be very bright at times. During the Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble all the performers were wearing all black. I imagine they did this for style and consistency. By wearing all the same color, it helps them look professional and more uniform at the same time so people can pay attention to the music and not the musicians choice of attire. Some women had slight sparkles or accents to their attire and some men you could see the white of their suits but everything else was black which created an element of class and elegance. In the Chamber Orchestra the musicians were very dramatic in movement, especially the two violinists that stood in front of the Orchestra. It seemed at times like they were having a conversation ... • 73. Music Plays A Influence On My Life Music plays a tremendous role in my life and always has. From the age of five, my parents introduced to me to one particular type of music, which was gospel and it has been a part of who I am ever since. I can remember waking up early on Sunday morning hearing gospel music from artist such as Kim Burrell, Shirley Caesar, and Mary Mary. I began learning these particular gospel songs and then I gained the courage to sing these songs in church. At that moment, I knew singing was a passion of mine and music became food to my soul. I would have to say the moment in my life where I strongly became influenced by music was as a child between the ages of five and twelve. Then when I entered middle school, I joined the school band. I played two instruments, the trombone and trumpet. Although I truly enjoyed playing those two instruments, I've always dreamed of playing the piano or violin but I never gained the opportunity to receive lessons. During the seventh grade, I joined the Needwood Middle School Choir. We sung gospel music and Christmas music during the holiday season. With gaining so much musical experience during my time in Middle School, my church appointed me to Youth Choir Director for Salem St. John Baptist Church. Overall, I prefer Gospel music for so many different reasons. One of the reasons I prefer to listen to Gospel music is because of the messages behind this type of music. God comes first and he truly is the head of my life. As a Christian, by me listening to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Choral Chorus Research Paper A choral ensemble is an organized group of singers, varying in size, that perform together with an orchestra or opera company. Choral ensembles have been around for thousands and thousands of years. They have been around for so long that the ancient Greeks used a chorus in their live Greek Dramas as a major part of their storytelling. Some may believe that a chorus just needs to have lovely singers in their group and they are good, but that is not the case. In a choral ensemble, numerous factors like teamwork, participation, attendance, and discipline can make or break a chorus and can extremely impact their sound. Discipline is something that is always needed to control large groups of people. In chorus, it is no different. When you have someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems like a waste of time if you learn all the songs and come to all the practices and concerts and just mouth the words the whole time. It may seem like your voice does not matter in an enormous choral ensemble, but if every single person in that ensemble were to have a mindset like that, no one would be singing. Also, every voice does matter and can impact a group. If you're not confident in your voice and that is why you're not participating, then you are robbing yourself out of good practice time. The more you practice and sing, even if it is done poorly, the more you will improve. It is also crucial to participate even when the ensemble is not singing. Answering a question that the teacher asks shows that you are being attentive and are always listening to your teacher. When an instructor asks a question that they want the choir to answer and no one answers it shows that no one is paying attention and it is very disrespectful. Finally, and most importantly, working together as a team is crucial for a choral ensemble to function properly. When a chorus is in harmony, they make the best...harmonies.
