Indirect fired water bath heaters are used in the oil and natural gas industry for a variety of applications including heating natural gas and preventing hydrate formation. TERI products include natural draft and forced draft water bath heaters and glycol dehydrators and are typically used when process temperatures do not exceed 170 degrees F.

3. Applications
Heating natural gas prior to pressure reduction to eliminate hydrate
formation downstream of expansion valving.
Heating well stream fluids prior to phase separation.
Heating process streams to maintain fluid viscosity at a minimum to
reduce HP pumping requirements.
Heating critical feed stocks that require tightly controlled film to bulk
temperature differentials.
Heating turbine fuel gases to maintain a given dew point temperature.
Heating natural gas for upstream pressure regulation stations to
prevent condensation due to Joule – Thompson effect.

4. Types of Heaters
Natural Draft: Burner relies on a stack to create negative pressure at the
burner inlet.
Forced Draft: Heaters utilize small bore fire tubes plus a combustion air fan.
High velocities reduce the “dead gas film” region, allowing reduced tube area
compared to large bore tubes.
Vertical: Less industrial appearance, smaller footprint and totally enclosed to
reduce burner noise and protect controls from environment.
Horizontal: Most commonly seen today.

5. Heater Components
Heater Shell: Atmospheric vessel designed in accordance with API-12K
requirements containing the process coil, fire tube (combustion chamber) and
heat media.
Process Coil: Pressure-containing part commonly designed in accordance
with API-12K or ASME Section VIII Division 1 code.
Flue Gas Stack: Provides positive flue gas flow (draft) constructed of
stainless steel with a clean-out tee at the bottom and a secure bird cage
cover bolted to the top.
Fire Tube: Commonly U-tube configuration. Removable tube designed to
efficiently transfer heat into surrounding heat media and minimize flue gas
friction losses.
Flame Arrestor: Prevents transmission of flame within combustion chamber
when exposed to external fuel source. Reduces temperature of fuel to
withstand the internal forces of explosion.

6. Heater Components (cont.)
Expansion Tank: Reduces corrosion in the heater shell by keeping it liquid-
packed and moving the wet-dry interface of the expanding bath media into the
expansion tank.
Gas Train: Built to API-12K, with larger heaters using NFPA 87 as guideline.
Burner: The Eclipse Burner is a TERI standard, and uses an eductor to draw
in combustion air and push combustion gasses through fire tube.
Pilot in a Drawer: Eliminates nuisance pilot outages with a dedicated
combustion air pilot assembly. Allows all air required for proper combustion of
the pilot gases to be pulled directly from outside of the main flame arrestor.
Allows easy access to the pilot components for maintenance and inspection,
and eliminates pilot outages due to a rich combustion chamber environment.

processed gas exits the heater coil.
